President’s Corner Dan Doyle - President

Hello, everyone! Well, it’s not cold yet, but at least it’s September, aka one month closer to good driving weather! As I indicated in my last article, August was a slow month for events. Luckily, we all had the chance to drive and dine at Conchy Joe’s in Jensen Beach, Florida on August 19-20. The food was fantastic and the company was even better. Many of the members stayed the night at local hotels. Remember folks, what happens in Jensen Beach stays in Jensen Beach!!! My personal thanks to Peter Olliviere and everyone else that helped to put on the Conchy Joe’s event. Also, I wanted to take the opportunity to thank Christy and Jeff Brigman for continuing to allow the Board of Directors to meet at their home. Your hospitality is much appreciated.

Early this month is the Kids Racing for Life charity event at Sebring International Raceway on September 9 and 10. Once a year the KRFL program takes children with debilitating illnesses and their families to the track for a weekend of fun including meeting with drivers and rides around the race track. The kids love it and it gives them the chance to forget their problems for a while. Although this is not a GCR event, it is an event that you shouldn’t miss. For those of you who choose to attend, you’ll have your choice of a DE, an AutoX, or both! On September 17, join us for a New Member Social at Okeeheelee Park in West Palm Beach. It’s always good to meet new people and welcome them to the club. We have a lot to offer and it’s our job to let the new members know just how much!

Finally, the First Timers DE is September 23 at Palm Beach International Raceway. For those of you who haven’t driven your car on the track, now is your chance! You will never love your car more than after you’ve put it through its paces and survived to tell the tale. It’s also possible that attending DEs will become a life-long obsession, not that I know anyone like that………………! As usual, Porsches & Pancakes is on the first Saturday of the month. Please take some time to join other Porsche fans and talk about your favorite subjects: your car and Porsche! Also, we have our Thursday Socials on the third Thursday of every month where you can do the same thing! Please check your emails and the calendar on our website for updated times and locations. These socials are a great way to get to know new members to the club and make them feel welcome! Drive smart and safe!

Editor’s Notes That was a quick summer, in fact 2017 has been moving at a fast pace. I hope you all had a great summer vacation and are looking forward to the next quarter in Florida. On the cover and on several pages of this issue you can see that Gold Coast traveled to the Collier Collection now named the Revs Institute in Naples. It is one of the finest collections of historical cars that you will ever see and it was created by one of our GCR members. The event sold out in a few hours so if you missed the event stay tuned for the next tour. We are having great response to our museum tours so look for more events in the future. Enjoy the detailed article by Bobby Varela and the great photographs

Roger Fabel- Editor

from Dennis Lai. Coverage of the Larry Willison Collection will be provided next month. The GCR election for 2018 Directors will begin mid October. Please review the slate of candidates running for the two open board positions. Both members and associate members may cast two votes each. A new electronic voting system will be used this year. Directions on how to use the system will be provided next month in the Kassette and also on line. Many people ask how the board members are selected. It is very simple. As new members start attending events and have an interest in supporting the event by volunteering to help, they are enrolled in the process. The club is run by volunteers who

have many different skills. Get involved and help the club grow. The members that are involved have more fun than the members that stay at home. As in any organization, performance and leadership skills are required. When those are observed the member is recommended for a leadership role in the club. It is that simple, come out and join in the fun with the club that is all about the people that have some very cool cars. Check out the flyer for the New Member social on September 17 at a new location in Jupiter. The planning committee is trying to offer more events in a central location to the region. Hope to see you there.

Revving our Porsches

to The Revs Institute by Bobby Varela

Have you ever owned a collection of Hot Wheels or Match Box toy cars when you were a kid? Or if you’re like me, you probably still have it and have passed it on to your children. It’s a fantastic feeling to curate your very own collection of favorite vehicles, even if they are just toys. But at The Revs Institute in Naples, that fantasy has become a reality for its founder, Mr. Collier. On July 22nd, Gold Coast Region PCA members had the privilege of being invited to an exclusive guided tour at the Revs Institute. Four groups of our club members from across the region arrived at Naples in their revving Porsches (naturally) and gathered for the event. Some came from afar, some are local, and two members even limped on a flat tire for a short distance on Alligator Alley after a large puncture in their Cayman before finally arriving in another Porsche nine hours later– the point is, it was all worth it to see the incredible collection at Revs! The exclusive guided group tour started with a short film produced by the institute documenting the historical significance of the automobile and its rise to form the cultural backbone of the modern world. It was a captivating perspective to see how Mr. Collier and the Revs Institute are not merely collecting a large number of cars inside a tasteful building because they have money – rather, their real goal is to preserve the legacy of the modern automobile, and to education the future generations of its importance and impact to society.

Afterwards, we were treated to see one of the best exhibitions of over 100 highly collectible automobiles and Porsches in the world. Ever wondered what the first racing Porsche looked like? Well, we saw it there. A 1953 Porsche 550 Coupe, serial no. 550-01. It raced and won its first race in 1953 at Nürburgring in the rain as a roadster. And here it is, sitting in front of us in pristine condition, with not a rope strung around it for our pure enjoyment. Absolutely astonishing. Another historically significant piece with a Florida connection we had the privilege of seeing up close is a 1964 Porsche 911, serial no.300-128. The 911 was Porsche’s newest model at the time, and the Porsche factory had no intention of racing it yet. Jack Ryan – no, not the CIA intelligence specialist in Tom Clancy’s novels – but a well-known VW dealer in Atlanta at the time, purchased this vehicle from Brumos Porsche of Jacksonville, Florida in 1965. It was only one of two 911s in the US at the time, and was meant to serve only as a demonstrator. He didn’t care. He prepped it for racing without the factory’s blessings, then entered it in the 1966 24 Hours of Daytona – and won the 2.0-liter Grand Touring class. And it is now of course also part of Mr. Collier’s collection at Revs. Here are some more examples to whet your appetite: a 1960 Porsche RS-60 Spyder with a 1697cc flat-four, a 1969 Porsche 917 PA, Serial No. 917 028 with a 4494cc air-cooled DOHC flat-twelve

mounted in its middle, and a 1956 Porsche 550A Spyder with a 1498cc flat-four air-cooled engine. One of my personal favorites is a 1938 BMW 328 with a 1971cc in-line-six, complete with the original and iconic vertical kidney grills. The body is completely fluid with generously curvy fenders, at a time when aerodynamics was considered a novelty by BMW’s contemporary competitors. But this little roadster snatched many trophies in countless races against the big boys. And to top it all off, we treated ourselves to a cozy get-together dinner on 5th Avenue with a few glasses of wine afterwards. A perfect way to end the day and catching up with members from the four different groups. Still not convinced? Take a trip to Naples and drop by at Revs to see for yourself. You won’t be disappointed. We certainly had a blast. A big thank-you to the wonderfully professional, knowledgeable and friendly staff at Revs as well. It was great fun for me to organize this trip and event for our club. I hope all the members who attended enjoyed the tour and the get-together dinner as much as I did. In the meantime, I’ll be building up my son’s Hot Wheels collection with a few more new Porsches before entering the automobile fantasy world at Revs Institute again next year.

Concours Corner

by Fred Kohly, Concours Chair

How To Buy A Collectable Car In the Porsche world there is a Concours class for every year. All Porsches are great looking, fun to drive and highly desirable, regardless of the model. Every owner should be proud to own an Icon, and unlike a lot of cars, there reaches a point where the resale value stops going down and begins going up. Unless totally destroyed, Porches’ values never go to zero. It’s true that not all Porsches are the same and their resale characteristics and desirability differ from model to model, and even from year to year, but many Porsches are selling for multiple times their original sales price. And in some cases, they are bringing millions of dollars at auctions or private sales. When looking at some resale prices from the recent Amelia Island auctions, and were awestruck at the breathtaking prices that were being realized at the gavel. We compared new, original sales prices, and measured them with today’s realized values. We then calculated the rate of return, or growth on our money, as if our cars were an actual investment. In addition we considered inflation and the time value of money. The conclusion was that Porsches compared favorably with other investment asset classes such as stocks, bonds, gold, etc., but yet had some distinct characteristics such as costs to maintain, store, insure, and the like. In general, because of the unusual risks, one should probably stick to owning a Porsche for fun and enjoyment instead of as an investment, unless you have reasonable knowledge of what you are doing - or at least think you do. In most cases the overwhelming reason most people buy a Porsche is for enjoyment, which is the way it should be. But of course, this means different things to different people. Concours people buy them for enjoyment and competition first, but then somehow they seem to turn into an investment. Go figure. It can be a little like buying a vacation home; you want to enjoy it and show it, and share it with friends and relatives. If it happens to pick up a little appreciation along the way, it’s a good thing!

18

Die Porsche

Kassette |

While we acknowledge that Porsches have the potential to appreciate over time from their nadir, as we discussed, not all Porsches will do so at the same pace and time frame. Like wines, you have to have some idea of what you are doing. The same goes for real estate, stocks, and almost everything else. Purchasing Porsches for increasing values is a little bit of an art form, and requires a reasonable amount of knowledge. I wanted to share some basics that I have found useful in helping me make my selections, and possibly it will be helpful to you. For starters, I spend a lot of time researching and becoming as knowledgeable as I can in one area. I am not that brainy, so I try to be an expert on only one thing, which in my case are the 911 air-cooled vintages up to the year 1998, the last year the air-cools were produced. They don’t make these anymore, and they are highly desirable among enthusiasts. The older 944s, 928s, 968s, 914,s and even the amazing 356s, are all extraordinary cars. I just have limited time and mental capacity to be an expert in every model, so by sticking to one approach it allows me to focus. Regardless of whether you decide to be an expert on all models or just one or two, there are a few principles that seem to hold together to define and set apart the best cars. It’s summed up in the acronym S-R-O-C. The S stands for speed, the R for rarity, the O for originality, and the C for color. SPEED never goes out of style. You can pretty much bank on that! Whether new cars or older cars, the faster they are, the more they cost, and the more they will bring upon resale. Whether we are talking Porsches, Bugattis, Astons, Corvettes or Ferraris, it always seems to hold true. Consider today’s modern Turbo models that are faster and more expensive than their slower counterparts. In the 993 models, made from 19951998, the Turbo models can sometimes bring double their slower air-aspirated counterparts, and the S wide bodies, with a little more horsepower bring more than

September 2017

the regular models. On and on it goes. In last month’s issue we compared the price differentials of the 1973 911T, E, and S models, and then compared them not only against each other, but the speed demon Carrera RS. The price differential for the slower T compared to the much faster S model is about $150,000, while the S compared to the RS Carrera rocket ship is about $250,000. Yes, speed kills … the wallet, that is. RARITY plays a notable part to the equation. The law of supply and demand works well in economics, and will also aide you in selecting a Porsche with some investment qualities. Older cars had very little production in terms of the numbers that were actually made. When you consider how many have vanished, rusted away, been destroyed, or squished in a junk yard, you may actually own a little piece of history, making the survivors more desirable and valuable. When cars are mass-produced over and over, as is the case with many of the modern cars, the appreciation factor is greatly diminished. If you consider again from last month’s price comparisons of the 1973 911 T, S, and RS, the total production numbers were as follows respectively; 8,695, 1590, and 1,590. Guess what? In the muscle car world, Corvettes with their high production numbers generally bring less than comparable year Porsches. The older fast Ford Mustangs typically only bring five figures at auctions. The Ford Shelby Mustang is by far the exception, but here we have speed and rarity combined. ORIGINALITY can’t be overlooked. The more original the car, the more an enthusiast or collector is likely to pay you for it. Originality brings higher resale for sure! Porsches, whether in their actual preserved condition, or restored to original correctness and paint, are in high demand. Changing out the engine, steering wheel, seats, wheels and color is a liability, which cheapens the car. For track use this is fabulous, and even recommended, but if you want to retain your car’s value, or perhaps even hope

that it increases, you can forget about it. Enthusiasts buying older Porsches in particular, are not likely to make daily drivers out of them. It takes countless hours of searching the Internet for parts that are no longer available, not to mention a pile of cash to buy them, to then bring them back to originality. There are actually people and companies who make a living selling original Porsche parts, and again these parts are not cheap so non-originality is not a plus. COLOR is impactful. In diamonds it is particularly important, and so it is in car collecting. Have you ever seen a brown Ferrari or a brown Porsche? There is a saying that goes like this; “no resale brown” and “resale red”. Get the picture? Color likes and dislikes are subjective, and at the end of the day, buy what you like; but if it comes down to salability, the color and greater appeal it adds to the car will matter. Over time and the decades, the attractiveness and style of colors have changed. In the ‘70’s the Signal Orange, or Irish Greens were popular. But in today’s modern cars these colors do not have as much appeal as the reds, silvers, blacks or whites. Period correct colors and attractiveness is definitely a factor to consider for purchase and resale. S-R-O-C is actually pretty simplistic and obviously just a rule of thumb. There are a couple of other components to this

formula that we have to add, however, and that is the two letters’ “Y” and “H”. These can be exceptionally impactful in determining values. The Y stands for “year” and the “H” for “history”. YEARS of production matter, and as we mentioned earlier, astute wine collectors, and even anyone with a basic knowledge of wines, is well aware that not all vintages are the same; some years are better than others due to weather conditions and other factors. Some years were just better than others, period. The same holds true for Porsches. In general, the last year of production is usually the best in the air-cooled models. The 1967S, for instance, was the last year the short wheelbase S models came to our shores, as the 1968S was not imported to the US. As a result, the ’67Ss have a rather strong following. The 1969 911s were the first year of the longer wheelbases, but they are not as popular as the later 1972 or 1973 models. The year 1973 was also the last year of the long hooded and small bumper cars. In other Porsche years, the 1983 SC, the 1989 3.2 Carrera, the 1993 964, and the 1998 993 Carreras are the most highly sought after in their generations. Porsches between 1974 and 1977, because of significant changes, such as reduced horsepower, larger bumpers, emission controls and other factors, are considered less desirable years. The only exception might

Savannah Parade 2011 Concours

be the 1974 Carrera, which was to be the extension of the legendary 1973 Carrera RS. The other exception is the RSR models for that same year. The last letter H can take your car’s value off the charts and can trump all the other rules. Take the example of Steve McQueen’s grayish green 1970 911S, which sold for $1,375,000. Yes, you are reading the number correctly in $millions! This car was not only the personal car of the “King of Cool”; it also appeared in his famous movie “Le Mans”. Without the Hollywood pedigree and history, the same car would have brought only a fraction of its colossal selling price. If the legendary race car driver Stirling Moss once owned your car, you are going to get a lot of dough for it. Any time you are buying a piece of significant history; it’s going to cost a lot of money. Are Rembrandts really that good, or are they commanding over a $100 million because of their place in history and status? Regardless of what Porsche you buy, you can probably be sure of one thing: you will have a winner. Buy the one you like, or the one your budget will let you buy. Buy it for enjoyment, but if values are a concern for the future, just remember what the definition of appreciation is: It means that the guy who buys it from you appreciated it more than you appreciated it when you bought it. Until next time … Fred

Autocross Update

Have you been thinking of giving AutoX a try? This is a great way to explore the outer limits of your cars handling capabilities in a controlled environment. Once a year Team AutoX offers a clinic geared to those wanting to learn the basics. The first of our “fall” events will again be at Sebring in conjunction with a DE held the same weekend. This event offers an AutoX school in the morning and a competition event in the afternoon. We do a hard break around noon to let anyone who wants to do a tour of the Sebring Racetrack participate with several low speed touring laps around the track….no helmet, passengers welcome and a small donation which goes to an established charity. Also the AutoX School is not to be missed for those thinking of learning more about Autocrossing. This school is limited to 10 beginner students and offers a great way to learn from the pro’s, in a noncompetitive environment, at a fraction of what many other schools would charge. While all of our autocrosses offer patient & experienced instructors, the school is geared toward building a solid foundation of event structure, principles of shaving seconds off your time, and tips from the pros. So come on out and join the fun on Sept. 16 at Sebring…While the drive is a little further than BB&T (depending on where you live)….you will be rewarded by more runs than usual….possibly 1620… at a lower cost. One of the questions we get all the time is where do you hold your AutoX events? The simple answer is where ever we can rent a reasonably priced piece of pavement large enough to safely conduct the event. This usually means an airport runway, big parking lot or even go cart tracks or portions of a race track. As little

20

Die Porsche

as 15 years ago, AX sites were still pretty easy to find and relatively inexpensive. 911 and casino gambling changed that and today AX sites are very limited and some have priced themselves out of the market for car clubs. Today, GCR uses 3 sites… BBT center in Sunrise, The Sebring skid pad (used primarily for the club race AX in February) and the concrete strip between turn 16-17 at Sebring. Come on out and give them all a try…different grip levels, different course design elements, but all fun! Here’s our proposed schedule for the second part of 2017, which is subject to change: Saturday Sept. 16 at the “concrete strip” in Sebring …Registration is open now on club registration… also prior to the AutoX, there will be a autoX mini-school from 9:00-11:00 This will be geared toward 1st timers, limited to 10 students and has a separate registration/payment on club registration. Saturday October 14th at BB&T Center in Sunrise. Usually one of best attended events…Register early to make sure you secure one of the 75 spots. Sunday November 12th at BB&T Center in Sunrise. Our season finale and annual PCA Ladies go free day (must drive a Porsche and be a PCA member or associate member to go free) Saturday October 28th Zone 12 AutoX Zone challenge in conjunction with the Oktoberfast club race 2017 at Daytona. This will be a zone challenge event run at the Daytona kart track. Registration is open now on club registration….(find by date or key word Oktoberfast….it’s under Zone 12 events) We anticipate trophies for class winners at this event so hoping Gold Coast Region participants will be well represented in the winner’s circle.

by Steve Kidd, Autocross Chair

News, reminders and 2017 updates: • Everyone is now required to pre register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net… Please consult the GCR or Zone 12 website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. • Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed. • Our 2017 series is planned to be 7 events. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in at least 4 events in the same class. Each competitor’s top 4 finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runnerup (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year-end class champion awards will be presented. • We have loaner helmets and instructors at all our AX events. Registration and payment is handled on line via Clubregistration.net. We generally do not allow on-site registration. • Questions…..call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954 946-3196

Steve Kidd- Director

Dan joined the Porsche Club of America in 2007 and has been a member of the Gold Coast Region (Zone 12) for the past ten years. Shortly after joining GCR he became involved in the Driver’s Education Program. After much work and study, he became a PCA Instructor in 2012. Dan enjoys giving back to the Porsche community as an instructor to this day. He began his public service with GCR as a 2nd Alternate Board Member in 2011. In 2012 he became a true Board Member. Being a Board Member gave him an opportunity to interact in a different way with all of the wonderful people he had met in GCR. In 2014, in addition to being a Board Member, he became the Driver Education (DE) Chairman, a job he performed through 2015. Also in 2015, he continued his public service with GCR as Vice President, a position that continued through 2016. For 2017, he was honored to serve as GCR’s President. Dan looks forward to serving in this capacity again in 2018, the challenges ahead and seeing everyone at upcoming GCR events!

The following members are running to fill two open board positions:

September 2017

Steve has been a member of PCA since 1972, first joining the Potomac Region with a new 1972 914. Steve currently serves on the National PCA staff as the Zone 12 representative and as a Director on the Gold Coast Region Board, however most of you will recognize Steve as Gold Coast Region’s Autocross Chair for the past 14 years. Additionally, Steve has served as GCR President (2010-2012), Vice President (2008-2009) as well as a Director for many years. Just as important is the fact that Steve and his wife Dottie have chaired, co-chaired, assisted with and participated in most every type of Porsche club event. The Kidd’s have a long history of volunteering not only within Gold Coast Region, but also at Regional and National events. This includes not only Autocross activity but also DE, social, rally, tour, concours and charity. This teamwork and level of service to the club has earned “Team Kidd” GCR’s Family of the Year four times as well as the National PCA Family of the Year Award in 2015. Steve has owned nearly every model of Porsche from 356 to GT3. He was one of the first GCR members to be certified as a DE instructor, and has been active in driver education and track events since the mid 80’s. In addition to track days, Steve visits other PCA regions and participates in their events as well as help when and where needed, including numerous Zonefests, Rennfests, Parades and Spring Thing. This involvement has provided Steve with great ideas and contacts he incorporates into his GCR activity planning. Other notable contributions include Steve’s service as a committee chair (autocross) for the 48 hours of Sebring (Club Race) and co-chairing Gold Coast’s 50th Anniversary Zonefest in 2013, as well as serving on the Oktoberfast Club race committee and as a staff/Judge for the Amelia Island Werks Reunion. When not participating in PCA events Steve & Dottie can be found enjoying their Tennessee mountain cabin, diving for lobster or entertaining the grandkids. Steve is retired, resides in Lighthouse Point, and looks forward to many more years of enjoying the companionship of our Porsche Club family. He has served in governance roles within GCR for many years, has demonstrated the commitment and leadership to serve the club, and looks forward to contributing in 2018 as a Gold Coast Region Director.

Jake Kooser- Director Jake was born in Houston, Texas in 1968 and grew up in the deserts of Arizona and New Mexico. He learned early on in his driving career how much fun could be had in the twisty mountain roads of nearby Colorado. Most of the vehicles he owned were air-cooled Volkswagens, from a 40-horsepower 1959 that was mostly rust by the time he got it, to a ‘modern’ fuel-injected 1971 Squareback, so a rear-engine rear wheel drive vehicle really suits him. Jake finally got his first Porsche about 4 years ago, a 1986 Carrera 3.2 that the previous owner ‘dressed up’ as a 964. He really didn’t know the difference at the time, and got a great deal on what has ended up being a great car. One of the first things he realized quickly was the 911, with its additional horsepower, is not just a ‘glorified VW’. He signed up for a Driver’s education event within the first week of buying the car, and had a great time at PBIR, so much so that he continued to attend DE events and now acts as DE Registrar for the region. Jake hopes to continue with the DE program and become an instructor someday. He also enjoys Autocross with the club, having been an instructor and class champion the last 3 years in a row. Jake enjoys participating in all the events the club puts on, even if it’s just as a volunteer. He has worked at the 48 Hours of Sebring Club Race for the last 3 years and really enjoys working with everyone from the various regions. He was named 2015 Enthusiast of the Year and hopes to be able to contribute more to keep the club as enjoyable and fun as he has found it to be.

Paul Raben - Director Paul Raben is running for the position of director of Gold Coast Region Porsche club. He has been an active member for 10 years along with his wife Peggy. Paul early on became more active and volunteered at all of the events he attended. Eventually he started helping out with membership as co-chairman and took on the responsibility of the early facebook page and handling emails to and from members. Paul’s job as membership co-chair became more involved as the club grew larger and his participation became larger as well. Eventually the membership chair position became his after the previous chair-person moved on. While Paul has held this position for years now the job has grown into handling all the correspondence from national PCA and the board members, handling emails to and from the members and of course ordering badges. While the membership chair is an important position, like all chair positions in the club he does not have a vote. Only the officers and directors of the club have the author-

Two Directors, Peter Olliviere and Bobby Varela will be serving their second year on the board. For 2018 we have two open Directors positions.

ity to vote on issues that guide the club. Paul would like to have your vote so his opinion can help guide the club on proposals that are voted on by the board of directors at our monthly meetings. Many of you have met Paul at events such as the breakfasts and Thursday socials. Many of you contacted him with a question or a problem you are having registering for an event. Now Paul is asking for your help when our elections are held for officers and directors in November, when it comes time to vote Paul would like you to consider him for a director position. All board members and directors do a great job and if elected so will Paul.

Mike Robin - Director Mike has been a PCA member since 2006 and has been a Gold Coast Region member since 2010 and is looking forward to this opportunity to be elected and to serve on the Board. He enjoys all things Porsche and participates in many social events including Porsche’s and Pancakes, drive and dines with his wife and 1 year old daughter, as well as Drivers Education events. Mike is a passionate and outgoing PCA National Instructor who really enjoys teaching his students how to safely enjoy their cars at speed on a real racetrack in a safe and controlled environment. His first Porsche was a 1968 912 which was a bit of a rusty project car that turned out to have more rust than anticipated. This was fixed up and sold to make way for his first 911, a 1979 911SC Targa which he still owns and enjoys tinkering with. Currently Mike is also the proud owner of a 2003 911 Turbo which does double duty as a date night car and track car as well. Mike comes from a family who also enjoy their Porsche’s as his parents and sister all spend time enjoying and driving their 2005 911 Turbo S, 2000 Boxster S, and 1987 944S. You could easily say that the passion for Porsche runs deep within the family, and many lifelong friendships have been forged throughout the years while spending time working on and under the cars doing everything from engine rebuilds to oil changes. Lastly and most importantly, Mike has a wonderful wife and young daughter who both enjoy participating and volunteering in our many wonderful PCA events. Be sure to say hello at the next Porsche’s and Pancakes, drive and dine, happy hour, or Driver’s Ed event!

Tech Corner :

Deciphering the Enigma Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor

During WW-II the Germans encrypted their secret messages using the “Enigma” Machine so that even if the messages were intercepted, they couldn’t be understood by the Allies.

Similar to the DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) in your car, right? The DTCs are error codes stored in your Porsche’s diagnostic system’s memory which are very misunderstood by the general public but which can be deciphered not with an Enigma Machine, but with a scan tool, knowledge and experience in these cars. All cars since 1996 have the standardized OBD-II (On-Board Diagnostic - II) which monitors the many systems in your Porsche which affect, among others, the Airbag Light, the ABS Light and the infamous Check Engine Light. These DTCs can be read using anything from an inexpensive Scan Tool (Code Reader), to the very exclusive factory tool known as the PIWIS (Porsche Integrated Workshop Information System). You simply plug it into the OBDII port in your car and read the code. And that’s when the fun begins. Let me first explain the DTC. The error code is made up of 5 characters. The 1st character identifies the system related to the trouble: P = Powertrain B = Body C = Chassis U = Undefined The 2nd character defines whether the code is generic or Manufacturer Specific: 0 = Generic 1 = Manufacturer Specific

30

Die Porsche

Kassette |

September 2017

The 3rd character indicates the type of sub-system that the error pertains to: 1 = Emission Management (Fuel or Air) 2 = Injector Circuit (Fuel or Air) 3 = Ignition System or Misfire 4 = Auxiliary Emissions Controls 5 = Vehicle Speed and Idle Control System 6 = Computer Output Circuit 7 = Transmission (gearbox) 8 = Transmission 9 = SAE Reserved 0 = SAE Reserved A, B, C = Exclusive for Hybrid Propulsion The 4th and 5th characters relate to a particular problem: Fault (00 – 99) Let’s look at a common reading such as P1128 and or P1130. If you’re using the cheapest code reader, probably that’s all you’ll see: P1128. You would then have to refer to a list of codes to look up the meaning of the code. If it’s a generic code, it will probably be included in the list, but if it’s a Porschespecific code, you’re on your own. But using the above information you can now start to decipher it: P = Powertrain issue 1 = Porsche Specific 1 = Emission Management Sub System 28 = Particular Problem The more expensive code readers apply this knowledge and offer additional information from its memory: P1128: Oxygen Sensing Adaptation, Range 2 (cylinder 1-3) Enrichment limit P1130: Oxygen Sensing Adaptation, Range 2 (cylinder 4-6) Enrichment limit

So, what does it really mean? It means that the fuel/air mixture is so lean that the control is up to the enrichment limit. Most people who get these error messages and want to fix the issue themselves see “Oxygen Sensing” and immediately assume that the oxygen sensors are bad and need to be replaced, so they go and purchase 4 sensors, replace them, clear the codes and a few miles later the CEL comes back on and the same two error codes appear. You really have to look deeper in order to figure out what’s going on. The bottom line is that the DME is sensing that the mixture is too lean, which means that there is more oxygen in the mixture than there should be. What could cause those readings? 1.- The Oxygen Sensor could be bad and reads a higher amount of oxygen than actual

2.- There could be an air leak after the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) 3.- The MAF could be bad (or dirty) and is reading less air going through it than actual 4.- There is less fuel getting to the cylinders due to: a) Low fuel pressure in the system because of a bad pump or clogged fuel filter b) Fuel supply too low (due to above) c) Clogged (carbonized) fuel injectors which don’t allow enough fuel through them Now is when experience and knowledge kicks in. An experienced tech will check the most logical issue first: An air leak after the MAF probably due to a loose hose clamp. If not, then move to: dirty MAF and so on. Last on the list are the oxygen sensors which in my opinion are almost bullet proof. In my car, they are the original sen-

sors and are still reading fine. BTW they have been working now for over 280,000 miles! Bedsides, it is very rare when all the sensors fail at once. It’s usually one bank or the other, not both at once. Most people want to DIY and save some money, but many times they end up spending more in parts than necessary. If you must DIY, arm yourself with knowledge from people who share it with you (not just from the Internet) and know when to say UNCLE!
