BEACH FUN FACILITY

BEACH VOLLEYBALL RETURNS TO COOLUM BEACH

As the sands come back to our beaches, so too does Beach Volleyball with the return of the free public court on Coolum Beach.

Beach volleyball is an excellent way to have fun while staying active and enjoying the beautiful weather and scenery that the Sunshine Coast has to offer.

Coolum resident and Sunshine Coast Beach Volleyball

President, Cam Bettenay says: “We are so pleased to be able to provide this facility for the local community once again as there is an ever growing community of beach volleyball players on the Sunshine Coast and public

courts make it easier for them and others to enjoy the game.”

When the court was here last (before the big swells of 2022) it was regularly used for recreation and even a training facility for some of the country’s best.

Caitlin Bettenay currently represents Australia and often returns home for training with local Chico Jones, a former Olympic Coach.

Whilst many of us know the game as an Olympic sport it is a great activity to enjoy no matter what your level, the Coolum court is there for all so be sure to grab a ball and invite your friends.

I am delighted to take this moment to introduce myself to you. My name is Darren, and I'm thrilled to be the new Editor of Coolum News. It's an incredible privilege to be following in the footsteps of Geoff and Rebecca, and I can't wait to continue their fantastic work in serving this amazing community.

A little bit about me: –

I reside in Peregian with my beautiful family – my gorgeous wife, and two incredibly energetic preschoolers. We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to live here.

What an incredibly stunning stretch of the Coast. The beaches are absolutely gorgeous, the walks are scenic, and the lookouts are breathtaking.

However, what truly sets this community apart is its people. Witnessing the remarkable way everyone came together during the bushfires was inspiring, and I am so honoured to be part of a publication that reflects the heart and soul of this beautiful community.

I look forward to working alongside you, to keep Coolum News thriving, and to keep celebrating all the amazing things that make this place a true slice of heaven.

I am open to receiving feedback on both previous and current content. Your thoughts and insights are valuable to me as they aid in the readership.

TASKFORCE EFFORTS REWARDED

TASKFORCE WINS AWARD FOR CONSTRUCTION CLEAN-UPS

A special taskforce introduced to protect the Sunshine Coast’s prized waterways from development-related pollution and erosion has been acknowledged with a major award. Sunshine Coast Council is celebrating the achievements of its Construction Management and Waterway Protection Taskforce.

This follows the team winning the National Award in Policy and Education at Stormwater Australia’s National Awards for Excellence in Sydney on March 29.

This coveted accolade moves Council another step closer to achieving its vision of being ‘Australia’s most sustainable region’. Council introduced the taskforce in 2021 to partner, educate and implement erosion and sediment control.

The team has been monitoring and educating all parts of the construction sector and working with the industry to avoid site run-off and erosion that may damage our prized waterways or clog roadside gutters or stormwater drains.

The taskforce is there to ensure residential builders, Continued on page 10

25 YEARS OF COOL ART IN COOLUM

COOLUM PICTURE FRAMING AND GALLERY BUSINESS COOL ART CELEBRATES ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY WITH A REMARKABLE EXHIBITION, THIS MAY.

now known) continues to represent some of the region’s most prolific and established contemporary visual artists.

Thirty-four of which will be featured in the business’s 25th Anniversary exhibition, ‘25’ on show from May 15 to June 12.

“The best thing about this business is the people you meet,” Joe said. “We have such a strong stable of artists that we love it when their work is collected and enjoyed in homes and workplaces.” ‘25’ opens May 15 at CA Gallery, 4-5/43 Access Crescent, Coolum Beach.

A long way from the little shop that could, on Coolum’s Beach road back in the day, Cool Art’s custom framing and gallery fit-out now extends across two warehouse spaces in Coolum’s Industrial estate - to an ever growing audience.

It’s been 25 years of custom framing, art exhibitions, high school projects and ‘back in 5’ mad dashes to the surf – before the 2017 expansion away from Beach Road.

Founder and co-owner Joe McFeeters (who runs the business with partner Erin, now) says it’s the artists and clientele that have led the way for him since he first opened Cool Art back in 1998 as a fresh-faced 22-year-old.

“I’ve learnt so much from the artists and clients who have come to get works framed over the years,” Joe said. “I consider many of them friends and some mentors in regards to exhibitions, curation and installation.”

“We’ve had some unforgettable exhibition openings, especially in those early days on Beach Road!”

CLASSIC HARMONY TO THE EARS

BUCKLE UP FOR A BURST OF CLARINET BRILLIANCE

It is very rarely that the audience of a classical performance shouts, whistles, and claps for well over a minute.

The audience of a recent concert reacted this way to the sublime clarinet virtuosity of Sacha McPhee-Gibbs.

Sacha is an active soloist, chamber musician, and freelance orchestral player. His international career has seen him perform with world class conductors, soloists and orchestras.

Twenty-seven-year-old Sacha studied at the University of Queensland, where he interned with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, graduating in 2016. Sacha was awarded their Top Performance Prize in his final year. He was then able to do a Masters Degree at London's

Royal Academy.

While there Sacha was selected to represent the Academy in solo and chamber performances around the country, as well as being the principal clarinetist in the Academy Symphony Orchestra and Opera Orchestra. Upon leaving there Sacha played with prominent orchestras in Europe.

Sacha is now presenting a very special concert of some of his favourite pieces for audiences on the Sunshine Coast.

Accompanied by Naomi Campbell on the piano, Sacha will play his Fruitful Fantasies.

I recently heard Sacha play in a concert at Wurtula, and was completely transported by the brilliance of his playing.

It is very rarely that you have the privilege of hearing such astonishing virtuosity in an intimate setting.

Here in Noosa Shire Sacha Sacha will present his Fruitful Fantasies at the Majestic Theatre in Pomona on June the 4th at 3pm.

To book tickets for this concert go to https:// www.themajestictheatre.com.au/

Tickets are $35 / $30 concessions.

SNAKES ARE ON THE MOVE

THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL SIGHTINGS RECENTLY OF SNAKES CROSSING OUR BUSY ROADS WITH SOME LOCAL MOTORISTS, BRAVELY STOPPING TRAFFIC, ENCOURAGING THE SNAKE TO MOVE TO SAFETY. FOR THOSE WITNESSING SUCH ACTS, THESE ARE HAILED AS A HEROIC GESTURE.

As we move into cooler months snakes will start to slow down, searching out comfortable spaces to enjoy their brumation which is known as hibernation for cold-blooded animals such as reptiles.

Although snakes on the Coast remain active all the year round, as temperatures drop, the snake’s digestion slows down becoming less active, moving predominantly during the warmer times of the day.

“We don’t get any night-time call outs during the winter months” Snake Catcher Luke Huntley explains. Pythons are prolific hunters at night due to much of their prey such as possums and rats being nocturnal.

Although snakes are happiest in the coastal sand dunes where the beaches’ morning sun brings the warmth, they need to be active

Prey such as frogs and nesting shore birds’ eggs are also delicious meals for our red bellies and brown snakes.

Whilst our coastline is abundant with wildlife, especially snakes, local snake catcher Luke, who grew up in Noosa and has been studying snakes all his life, tells us that snakes would prefer to move away from human activity than come towards it.

Very receptive to vibrations, while snakes are often spotted, they will generally move away from human movements.

That said, under all circumstances if bitten by a snake always call 000, for limb bites,

apply a firm bandage and try to remain calm. Where possible remember the colour and shape of the snake which can help with treatments.

Often snakes end up in our homes and gardens looking for food and warmth, finding unusual places to curl up, and it is advised to call local snake catchers such as Luke who will safely remove and relocate them.

He advises that whilst pythons are not as venomous as our brown snakes and red belly blacks, they are very dangerous to pets such as chickens and guinea pigs and even cats.

Snakes may wander into our gardens from time to time especially during the breeding season between September and November, when they are at their most active, so to prevent snakes coming into houses, Luke advises screens across doors and windows.

For snake removal from properties, call local Snake Catcher Noosa Luke Huntley 24/7 please call 0499 920 290.

For snakes crossing roads, where safe to do so, stopping traffic and waiting for the snake to move on is the best option.

contractors and developers are aware of their legislated environmental responsibilities.

To date, the team has completed 574 building site inspections and education sessions across 121 unique building companies and conducted 186 inspections and education sessions for large civil sites, across 26 unique civil contractors.

Manager Development Services Patricia Jensen said Council’s taskforce had been a catalyst for positive change in the construction sector, improving the industry’s environmental performance.

Ms Jensen said there had been three key components behind the success of this taskforce:

Engagement with industry - developers, builders, contractors and consultants

Education to a range of internal and external

stakeholders to enable them to succeed Measuring performance and development of metrics, so progress can be tracked and ongoing momentum ensured.

Ms Jensen congratulated the team members who had made Council’s taskforce so successful, including Richard MacGillivray, Rob Sewell, Rupert Hindley, Lisa Meilak, Michelle Walker, Samantha Middleton, Michelle Lowe and Sally Welch.

“We could not have achieved this fantastic recognition for this Taskforce without funding from Council’s Environment Levy,” she said.

“We hope that the great work being done by the Taskforce can continue after its three-year project timeframe.”

ANZAC DAY BRINGS OUT OUR BEST

ANZAC DAY

In 1918 our nation made a promise to never forget the service and sacrifice of those Australians who enlisted in the First World War. Across the electorate, thousands of people attended local services in the lead up and on Anzac Day, and it was humbling to see the large crowds share their respects and honour the memories of our fallen servicemen and women. Lest We Forget.

COOLUM SURF CLUB GIVES BACK

Last month, Coolum Surf Club generously donated $54,924 to 15 local not-for-profit and charities as part of their annual Clubs Community Benefit Fund.

Congratulations to each of these groups, who will put the funds to good use by continuing to support the many locals who rely on them. Since the Surf Club started the program, they’ve donated more than $700,000 back to our community, a champion effort from a champion club!

DESIGN UNDERWAY FOR NEW SIGNALLED INTERSECTION

Thanks to everyone who provided feedback in the most recent round of consultation on the preferred options to upgrade the Sunshine Motorway and our local road network. TMR have now released the details of the preferred design for one of the key components, the upgrade to the intersection at Yandina Coolum Road, School Road and South Coolum Road.

As was previously flagged, this new intersection will feature signals to improve the safety for pedestrians and motorists, as well as reduce congestion.

Details of the signalised intersection include:

• Three new signalised pedestrian crossings at the intersection

• Removal of existing pedestrian crossing on Yandina-Coolum Road

• New concrete footpath to connect Barns Lane school bus drop-off zone to School Road

• New dedicated left-turn lane into School

Road from Yandina-Coolum Road

• New dedicated right-turn lane into South Coolum Road from Yandina-Coolum Road

• New dedicated right-turn lane into School Road from Yandina-Coolum Road

• Pavement widening to incorporate the above traffic modifications

• Provision of active transport modifications including on-road bike lanes where possible

• Line-marking where needed

I’m assured there will be another round of consultation on this important project as it continues, with the detailed design expected

to be completed later this year.

This fully funded intersection upgrade is a key component of the multimillion dollar plan to bust congestion and improve safety in Coolum, which will include the duplication of a 10km section of the Sunshine Motorway.

GET SET FOR NOOSA RUNAWAY

FOR THOSE KEEN TO ENJOY MEDAL GLORY FOR RUNNING DISTANCES BETWEEN 5KM AND A FULL MARATHON, RUNAWAY NOOSA WHICH TAKES PLACE ALONG NOOSA PARADE ON SATURDAY 27 MAY 2023, IS THE PLACE TO BE.

Athletes, some local, some international, are invited to enjoy the winter sun and run along Noosa’s picturesque, palm- tree lined streets while enjoying extensive water views, entertainment, atmosphere, and a unique vibe. It’s no wonder thousands are expected to have fun while they “Chase the Sun.”

Volunteers from local schools, sports groups and community organisations will be giving their time while raising funds for their clubs, providing water and hydration products at aid stations, handing out medals at the finishing line and cycling the course, sending information back to event organisers of the lead runners’ progress. Noosa Masters Swimming Club members will be riding bikes amongst the leaders keeping them on track.

In addition, the Swim Noosa event on Sunday 28 May will have a big team of volunteers from Noosa Masters Swim Club making sure competitors are checked in and numbered correctly and assisting swimmers at the start and finishing line.

Many Noosa Masters swimmers have recently returned from state championships in Mackay and national championships in Hobart with a hoard of medals and 25 state and national records. Competition between locals and visitors in the Swim Noosa event will be fierce!

The Noosa Masters club has 80 members, with many competing in pool and open water swimming events around Queensland and interstate. By volunteering at Runaway Noosa and the Noosa Triathlon, the club raises

funds needed to pay coaches and to host an annual swim meet that attracts around 150 competitors from 20 or more clubs.

Based at the Noosa Aquatic Centre, the club welcomes swimmers over the age of 18, with most members currently aged from 50 to over 80 with the pool sessions run by coaches focusing on fitness, technique and endurance.

Without the commitment local volunteer organisations such as The Noosa Masters Swim Club bring to local events, they would not be the success that they are.

Runaway Noosa is a part of the Runaway Marathon Series, which has hand-picked the most stunning destinations in New Zealand, Hawkes Bay and Queenstown as well as Sydney and Noosa here in Australia.

Those who compete at all four will receive an exclusive MVP, (Most Valuable Player) award.

For anyone keen to challenge themselves to an endurance run or swim, with variable distances, Noosa is the best place to be on 27 and 28 May.

For information on volunteering at Runaway Noosa please visit the Runaway Noosa website.

For information on Noosa Masters Swim Club, please email noosamastersswimming@ outlook.com or visit the NAC on Tuesdays, Thursdays or Sunday mornings from 7am to 9am.

Our national spirit of remembrance has found a home on ANZAC Day which marks that brave and fateful moment in 1915, when 16,000 Australian troops landed at Gallipoli. That spirit was reinforced during the battles of subsequent conflicts such as World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars.

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the end of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam

War and the 70th anniversary of the end of the Korean War.

I had the pleasure of attending many Anzac Day services across the electorate, including at Coolum State High School this year. I would like to congratulate school captains, Layla and Jye for their excellent and professional MC’ing.

I would also like to congratulate the organisers and volunteers involved. These events can’t happen without their hard work.

AUTUMN ROAD TRIP

I will be out and about across the electorate on my Autumn Road Trip during the week of 15 May 2023.

Come on down and chat to me about any local or federal issue.

Full details of times and locations are available on my website – www.tedobrien. com.au.

STAY IN TOUCH

If you have any Federal Government issues you would like to talk to me about, call the electorate office on 07 5479 2800 or email ted.obrien@mp@aph.gov.au

ARE YOU READY TO CARE?

At IFYS Foster Care we know every child deserves to be safe, nurtured, cared for and loved.

At IFYS we hope of a world where every child lives a life that is free of hurt and trauma and they grow up in a caring and nurturing family knowing they are loved.

Sadly, this is just not the reality for many children who have to enter the child protection system through no fault of their own.
