REC CENTRE TO RE-OPEN

AFTER A HIGHLY COMPETITIVE EXPRESSION OF INTEREST CAMPAIGN, THE BEAUTIFUL PEREGIAN SPRINGS RECREATIONAL FACILITY KNOWN AS THE "REC CENTRE" WILL SOON REOPEN TO THE COMMUNITY.

According to the new owners, St Andrew’s Anglican College, the much-loved facility will open to members from early May 2023.

This was a welcomed development after the Ridges Body Corporate voted against the transfer of the Rec Centre, late last year, resulting in the centre being closed up until now while a new owner was found.

St Andrew’s have committed to opening the facility to the

broader community through paid memberships to ensure it will once again become a thriving centre of activity.

St Andrew’s Anglican College

Principal Chris Ivey said the College recognises the important part this facility has played in bringing the community together and that is a great asset to the local area.

“Community is major part of who we are, and we are committed to providing opportunities and facilities that benefit both our internal and broader community,” Mr Ivey said.

“The facility will continue to operate as a public facing café, pool, and gym, albeit with some restrictions on access to the pool."

NEW EDITOR, SAME TRUSTED COMMUNITY PUBLICATION, KEEPING THE COMMUNITY INFORMED WITH THE LATEST LOCAL NEWS

I am delighted to take this moment to introduce myself to you. My name is Darren, and I'm thrilled to be the new Editor of Peregian Springs News. It's an incredible privilege to be following in the footsteps of Geoff and Rebecca, and I can't wait to continue their fantastic work in serving this amazing community.

A little bit about me: –

I reside in Peregian with my beautiful family – my gorgeous wife, and two incredibly energetic preschoolers. We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to live here.

What an incredibly stunning stretch of the Coast. The beaches are absolutely gorgeous, the walks are scenic, and the lookouts are breathtaking.

However, what truly sets this community apart is its people. Witnessing the remarkable way everyone came together during the bushfires was inspiring, and I am so honoured to be part of a publication that reflects the heart and soul of this beautiful community.

I look forward to working alongside you, to keep Peregian Springs News thriving, and to keep celebrating all the amazing things that make this place a true slice of heaven.

I am open to receiving feedback on both previous and current content. Your thoughts and insights are valuable to me as they aid in the readership.

If there are particular topics or areas that you feel require our attention, please do not hesitate to share them with me. Your input is greatly appreciated and will assist me in providing more informative and engaging content.

I would like to express my deep gratitude to the community for their unwavering support of our advertisers, as their support is integral to the sustainability and continued success of our community news publication.

Wishing a very happy Mother's Day to all the amazing moms out there, including those who have given birth, those who have adopted, and those who have stepped in as a mother figure.

Your love, care, and sacrifices make the world a better place, and we are grateful for everything you do. May your day be filled with joy, love, and appreciation for all that you are and all that you do.

The website lists the fees as $36 per fortnight for a "full membership" for those aged 16 years and over, with a minimum sign up of three months upfront ($234).

NEW OWNERS FOR GOLF CLUB

THE FUTURE OF THE PEREGIAN SPRINGS GOLF COURSE HAS BEEN SECURED.

Chateraise Lakelands Golf Club is the new owner of the Peregian Golf Course after purchasing it from Peregian Golf Holdings for an undisclosed price.

A Peregian Springs Golf Holdings spokesperson said the sale proceeded after a meeting of shareholders was on Friday, 17 March 2023 to seek approval for the sale of the golf course land.

"Voting in favour of the sale was made by the Establishment and Preference Shareholders and was also voted overwhelmingly in favour by ordinary shareholders," the spokesperson said.

"From the outset of the expressions of interest campaign we made it clear that a key consideration was the ability and intention for

the purchaser to continue operating the golf course for the benefit of the local community.

“Lakelands is an established owner and operator of golf courses in Japan and Australia and has shown a genuine commitment to maintaining the golf course operations.

"They have extensive experience owning and

operating 18-hole golf courses, including the Jack Nicklaus-designed Lakelands Golf Club in Merrimac on the Gold Coast.

"This experience provides a great foundation for the ongoing operation of the Peregian Golf Course into the future.

"This is a welcomed development for the community, as there was considerable concern in 2016, that the course would become a housing development.

"However, back then the fate of the golf course was essentially secured when Golf Services Management stepped in to oversee operations.

"Golf Services Management (GSM) currently operates the Peregian Golf Course and Clubhouse under its current lease.

"GSM’s current lease is being transferred as part of the sale. We have no doubt that GSM will continue to provide outstanding operations at this stunning golf-course."

CHANCE FOR WORK EXPERIENCE

A NEW PROGRAM IS PLANTING SEEDS WITH YOUTH LOOKING FOR A CAREER IN THE OUTDOORS

A unique work experience program open to Sunshine Coast high school students could grow into a wonderful career.

A five-day work experience program is open to students in Years 10, 11 and 12 looking to obtain on-the job skills and experience with the Sunshine Coast Council Parks and Gardens Branch across six fields.

Sunshine Coast Council Environment and Liveability Portfolio Councillor Maria Suarez said students would be provided with opportunities to experience first-hand basic technical skills within their chosen field while gaining insight into the various parks and gardens-related professions.

“If you love the outdoors and have a keen interest in caring for trees, why not try work experience in arboriculture,” Cr Suarez said. “Have a green thumb? Or potential to grow one? Nursery operations could be the place for you.”

Students can also learn more about behindthe-scenes of running a branch through the field of administration.

The program allows students to gain practical experience in a parks and gardens operational environment within key career fields, including:

• horticulture

• arboriculture

• turf and irrigation

• nursery operations

• infrastructure maintenance

• administration

As well as developing transferable skills such as technical, communication, teamwork and an understanding how the Parks and Gardens Branch operates, students receive a certificate of completion at the end of the five-day program.

Manager Parks and Gardens Nicholas Coluccio said he was proud to be able to support students from across our region in keeping parks and gardens well-presented and safe for the community.

Shayla, who recently experienced work experience with the administration team in the Parks and Gardens Branch said the program allowed her to experience the diverse range of work undertaken by the department.

“The team was friendly, and the program offered a creative and supportive environment to explore various career pathways,” Shayla said.

Council’s work experience programs help high school students make informed decisions about their future and provide an opportunity to explore potential careers.

For more information check out the Work Experience video on council’s YouTube site, or visit the careers page on council’s website to apply.

FEEDING WILD LIFE

FEEDING WILDLIFE CAN BE A DELIGHTFUL EXPERIENCE, BUT IT IS ESSENTIAL TO UNDERSTAND THE IMPACT IT HAS ON THE ANIMALS AND THEIR ECOSYSTEM.

Responsible feeding practices can reduce the potential risks and impact. Before feeding wildlife, consider the animals that will come, avoid certain foods, and be aware of local laws and regulations.

It is important to note that feeding wildlife can have negative consequences, such as attracting unwanted pests and creating a nuisance for neighbors. In some cases, feeding wildlife can also be illegal, and it is crucial to be aware of local laws and regulations regarding the feeding of native animals.

When encountering a wildlife feeding issue, it is best to approach the person responsible and discuss the situation. If this approach does not work or the issue is not resolved, contacting the local government or seeking advice from the department for species conservation concerns can help. Additionally, the Department of Justice and AttorneyGeneral provides dispute resolution services, including mediation, which can help resolve the issue.

Overall, feeding wildlife can be enjoyable, but it is crucial to do it responsibly and be aware of the potential impact it can have.

MAGNIFICENT BAROQUE ON SHOW

BACH'S MIGHTY MAGNIFICAT IS RETURNING TO THE STAGE IN NOOSA

Five years ago Noosa Chorale performed JS Bach’s Magnificat to a packed and enthusiastic audience at The J Theatre.

Now it aims to repeat that success in May by not only presenting the memorable music again but adding two other Magnificats—one by Antonio Vivaldi and the other by Bach’s son, Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach.

Chorale president Fran Wilson said the concert at The J on May 26 and 27 would also feature a baroque orchestra and five impressively talented Queensland soloists, one of whom is Queensland soprano Annika Hinrichs who sang at the 2018 concert.

“The others include baritone Leon Warnock who has also sung previously with us, soprano Jolanta Kudra, mezzo soprano Morgan Rosati and tenor Sebastian Maclaine.

"Sebastian has been a member of the popular Australian group, The Ten Tenors, performing in 16 countries.”

Fran said there was another connection to The Ten Tenors, this time with the Chorale’s guest conductor, Kim Kirkman who is a former co-owner, music director and performer of the group.

“There are countless hundreds of musical settings of the Magnificat, and a magnificent variety of styles and moods across the choral versions of this work.

“The three chosen by the Chorale are amongst the best known and most frequently performed today.

“They each reveal a variety of moods across the movements, and each makes significant demands of virtuosity from the soloists, choristers, and instrumentalists."

Fran said singing choral music from the baroque period was challenging and rewarding.

She said the music was often fast-paced and complex, with vocal parts interweaving, and

the whole effect is dynamic and emotive.

“We are thrilled to be singing with such talented soloists and orchestra," Fran said.

"Working with such professionals really inspires a choir.

“Next year is our 30th anniversary of our founding by Noosa barrister Joe McMahon and we have had many blockbuster performances in that time.

“Magnificat” in May will be among the best of them.”

ANZAC DAY BRINGS OUT OUR BEST

ANZAC DAY

In 1918 our nation made a promise to never forget the service and sacrifice of those Australians who enlisted in the First World War. Across the electorate, thousands of people attended local services in the lead up and on Anzac Day, and it was humbling to see the large crowds share their respects and honour the memories of our fallen servicemen and women. Lest We Forget.

COOLUM SURF CLUB GIVES BACK

Last month, Coolum Surf Club generously donated $54,924 to 15 local not-for-profit and charities as part of their annual Clubs Community Benefit Fund.

Congratulations to each of these groups, who will put the funds to good use by continuing to support the many locals who rely on them. Since the Surf Club started the program, they’ve donated more than $700,000 back to our community, a champion effort from a champion club!

DESIGN UNDERWAY FOR NEW SIGNALLED INTERSECTION

Thanks to everyone who provided feedback in the most recent round of consultation on the preferred options to upgrade the Sunshine Motorway and our local road network.

TMR have now released the details of the preferred design for one of the key components, the upgrade to the intersection at Yandina Coolum Road, School Road and South Coolum Road.

As was previously flagged, this new intersection will feature signals to improve the safety for pedestrians and motorists, as well as reduce congestion.

Details of the signalised intersection include:

• Three new signalised pedestrian crossings at the intersection

• Removal of existing pedestrian crossing on Yandina-Coolum Road

• New concrete footpath to connect Barns Lane school bus drop-off zone to School Road

• New dedicated left-turn lane into School

Road from Yandina-Coolum Road

• New dedicated right-turn lane into South Coolum Road from Yandina-Coolum Road

• New dedicated right-turn lane into School Road from Yandina-Coolum Road

• Pavement widening to incorporate the above traffic modifications

• Provision of active transport modifications including on-road bike lanes where possible

• Line-marking where needed

I’m assured there will be another round of consultation on this important project as it continues, with the detailed design expected

to be completed later this year.

This fully funded intersection upgrade is a key component of the multimillion dollar plan to bust congestion and improve safety in Coolum, which will include the duplication of a 10km section of the Sunshine Motorway.

CLASSIC HARMONY TO THE EARS

BUCKLE UP FOR A BURST OF CLARINET BRILLIANCE

It is very rarely that the audience of a classical performance shouts, whistles, and claps for well over a minute.

The audience of a recent concert reacted this way to the sublime clarinet virtuosity of Sacha McPhee-Gibbs.

Sacha is an active soloist, chamber musician, and freelance orchestral player. His international career has seen him perform with world class conductors, soloists and orchestras.

Twenty-seven-year-old Sacha studied at the University of Queensland, where he interned with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, graduating in 2016. Sacha was awarded their Top Performance Prize in his final year. He was then able to do a Masters Degree at London's Royal Academy.

While there Sacha was selected to represent the Academy in solo and chamber performances around the country, as well as being the principal clarinetist in the Academy Symphony Orchestra and Opera Orchestra. Upon leaving there Sacha played with prominent orchestras in Europe.

Sacha is now presenting a very special

concert of some of his favourite pieces for audiences on the Sunshine Coast.

Accompanied by Naomi Campbell on the piano, Sacha will play his Fruitful Fantasies.

I recently heard Sacha play in a concert at Wurtula, and was completely transported by the brilliance of his playing.

It is very rarely that you have the privilege of hearing such astonishing virtuosity in an intimate setting.

Here in Noosa Shire Sacha Sacha will present his Fruitful Fantasies at the Majestic Theatre in Pomona on June the 4th at 3pm.

To book tickets for this concert go to https:// www.themajestictheatre.com.au/

Tickets are $35 / $30 concessions.

PEREGIAN SPRINGS PLANNED BURN

Doonan Creek Environmental Reserve, Peregian Springs has been earmarked for a planned burn in 2023 as part of council’s annual program.

Trained council officers work with the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service to carefully assess each site and prepare for the burns.

An exact day for the burn cannot be provided in advance, as timing is highly dependent on if weather and site conditions are suitable. These conditions include temperature, humidity, wind-speed and wind direction.

Where a fire can’t go ahead, it will be rescheduled for another time. Planned burns

help plant species that rely on fire to regenerate and also reduce fuel on the ground before bushfire season. Habitat trees, which may be hundreds of years old, are protected to retain animal habitat and cultural value. And some areas are left untouched to provide wildlife refuge. Fires are patrolled until safe, and there may be residual smoke.

Keep up to date with our burn schedule via council’s Facebook page and by searching ‘bushfire management’ at sunshinecoast.qld. gov.au.

OUR STRONG NATIONAL SPIRIT

ANZAC DAY COMMEMORATIONS

For over a century Australians have served in conflicts and peacekeeping missions around the world, protecting values of freedom and democracy.

Our national spirit of remembrance has found a home on ANZAC Day which marks that brave and fateful moment in 1915, when 16,000 Australian troops landed at Gallipoli. That spirit was reinforced during the battles of subsequent conflicts such as World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars.

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the end of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War and the 70th anniversary of the end of the Korean War.

I had the pleasure of attending many Anzac Day services across the electorate and I would like to congratulate the organisers and volunteers involved. These events can't happen without their hard work.

NEW LOCAL ROADS

I am proud to have secured 80% of the $301 million upgrade of the MaroochydoreMons Rd Interchange on the Bruce Highway a few years ago. The project reached another key milestone recently, with the new eastern and western service roads opening to traffic at

Forest Glen and Chevallum respectively.

The practical benefit of these service roads is that motorists, pedestrians and cyclists no longer have to enter the Bruce Highway for local commutes around this area; getting people home sooner and safer.

AUTUMN ROAD TRIP

I will be out and about across the electorate on my Autumn Road Trip during the week of 15 May 2023.

HOW TO HIT BETTER IRON SHOTS

DO YOU OFTEN FIND YOURSELF HITTING THE FAIRWAY, SETTING UP A PERFECT SHOT TO THE GREEN, AND THEN MISSING THE MARK WITH YOUR IRON SHOT? HERE ARE THREE SIMPLE STEPS TO HELP YOU MAKE CRISP CONTACT EVERY TIME.

Step 1: Use your body, not your hands. To achieve strong and crisp contact, learn to turn using your big muscle groups, such as your legs and chest. This allows you to create more time, compression, and power. Relying solely on your hands to control the club requires perfect timing every time, which can lead to inconsistency.

Step 2: Pay attention to your ball position. Recognise where your club makes contact with the ground. For most players, the ball is struck better when positioned forward of

centre in relation to their feet. This allows you to hit through the ball towards your target. Step 3: Finish with your weight on your lead leg. At the end of your shot, your follow-through should leave you holding 90% to 100% of your weight on your lead leg. This means you've transferred your weight through the strike, putting the most amount of force into the ball as possible. With a little effort and dedication, you can start hitting better iron shots and taking your game to the next level. Happy golfing Katelyn

ARE YOU READY TO CARE?

At IFYS Foster Care we know every child deserves to be safe, nurtured, cared for and loved.

We also know that adults are crucial in ensuring children are safe from abuse and harm. At IFYS we hope of a world where every child lives a life that is free of hurt and trauma and they grow up in a caring and nurturing family knowing they are loved. Sadly, this is just not the reality for many children who have to enter the child protection system through no fault of their own.

ACCORDING TO SUNCORP, FLEXIHOSES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALMOST ONE IN TEN WATER DAMAGE INSURANCE CLAIMS, AND THESE CLAIMS COST MORE THAN DOUBLE THE AMOUNT OF DAMAGE CAUSED BY A REGULAR BURST PIPE.

Despite their prevalence in Australian homes, almost half of Australians (47%) do not know what a flexi-hose is, and 20% do not know where to find them in their homes. This lack of awareness is leading to significant financial losses for homeowners.

Flexi-hoses are a common style of plumbing fitting, often used to connect water to taps and fixtures in bathrooms and kitchens due to their flexibility, low cost, and ease of installation. However, they can also corrode, rust and fail quickly, especially if not maintained properly. Homeowners should be checking their flexi-hoses every six months and getting them checked or replaced by a licensed plumber as soon as they notice something is amiss.

In addition to regular maintenance, Suncorp recommends that Australians turn off the water mains before heading away on holidays. Research shows that seven out of ten Australians do not check or ensure that

It is also essential for homeowners to understand that "wear and tear" is not covered by most insurance policies. Many Australians believe that if their home is flooded or damaged by water due to a burst flexi-hose, their insurer will cover the cost of all repairs and replacements. However, if the hose wasn't maintained properly and showed signs of wear, tear, rust, or corrosion, the insurer may not cover the cost. Therefore, it is crucial to stay on top of home maintenance, keep an eye on the condition of flexi-hoses, and get them checked and/or replaced by a licensed plumber as soon as possible.

In conclusion, homeowners should educate themselves about the presence and potential risks of flexi-hoses in their homes. Regular maintenance and turning off the water mains before leaving home can prevent significant financial losses due to water damage. It is also essential to understand the limitations of insurance policies and take action to maintain home safety and security.
