PIERCE COUNTY PARKS ADVENTURE GUIDE + CALENDAR / AUTUMN 2020
Specialized recreation activities in a park near you! Parents and caregivers seeking social recreation outlets for your children and family members (and perhaps some much-needed respite time for yourselves) look no further! After several weeks and months of attempting online activities, we listened while you described the challenges your families are facing under the current “Safe Start” guidelines. We understand that while virtual programming may be difficult for many, it can be especially difficult for individuals and families in the specialized recreation community. We brainstormed possible solutions and reached out to our friends at Metro Parks Tacoma to partner with us on this new program! Meet Me In The Park provides a wonderful alternative to virtual programming while encouraging social, and physical outdoor experiences that are safe, engaing and fun. The program is available for youth and adults, ages 5 and up with planned activities led by our trained Parks staff and geared towards individuals of all abilities.
See pg 32 for Meet Me In The Park dates, times and even more specialized recreation activities
Join us for some safe and socially-distanced fun in one (or many) of our parks!
Our recreation leaders are hosting one and twohour social activity sessions at various parks throughout Pierce County. Registration for each session is kept to a minimum as our current “phasing guidelines” allow. Participants meet to socialize with each other, play games, or participate in crafts. With a variety of locations available, we’re looking forward to seeing the smiling faces and fun in the parks!
Sign up for the park location near you to meet up outside with a small group of others for outdoor crafts, nature walks, or other small group activities – safely, of course – all while learning and practicing recreation and social skills! For more information or to register, visit: www.piercecountywa.gov/meetmeinthepark or call 253-798-4186.
“Meet Me In The Park offers the opportunity for safe, socially distanced, staff-led social recreation to continue in our community for a population that has only become increasingly isolated as a result of the current pandemic. Pierce County Parks is here and ready to provide meaningful services to those in our community who are most in need of this connection”. - Kim LeMay, Recreation Supervisor
* Participants are required to bring and wear a face mask or face shield during the program. Participants should also wear weather-appropriate clothing and bring a water bottle to stay hydrated. This program is supported by **DDA funding and respite money may be used for this program. ** Developmental Disabilities Administration

OUR GROWTH
projects & plans stan and joan CROSS PARK Construction at Cross Park will end in September! While COVID-19 prevents the opening of the amazing new Frederickson Community Center, we are thrilled to invite you to visit the exciting new playground! It’s universally-accessible, which means fun for everyone no matter what their age or abilities! Cross Park’s outdoor spaces will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. Park operating hours will be subject to change as we move in to fall and winter and daylight hours get shorter. Looking for a new place to take a walk? Maybe you’ll even learn a little something at the Naches Trail Preserve which is on the same property as Cross Park. Newly built gravel paths and split-rail fencing lead you through a garry oak prairie remnant on the banks of Clover Creek. Bring the kids but leave your dogs at home – this nature preserve is home to a variety of native species who will be more likely to put on a show if they feel safe! Be sure to watch our virtual tour at https://youtu.be/scx2CkcTn9U

NORTH LAKE TAPPS PARK Following six months of construction, North Lake Tapps Park re-opened in July with many fun, new features including: • • • •
An improved bulkhead and a pocket beach that invite you to get closer to the water. An extended boat ramp that makes it easier to launch your boat while improving safety. A new restroom building, picnic tables, BBQ grills and coal dumps. A peninsula walking path bordered by native plants which leads to a restful, hand-hewn bench.
Naches trail preserve This 50-acre Preserve was set aside in 2003 for the protection of wildlife and education. The acreage is one of few remaining undeveloped tracts in the area and represents part of the natural and cultural history of the community. Besides the natural resources, it is located along the route of the Naches Trail, a historic route originated by the Native American, military, and early settlers. Visitors will experience a relaxing respite away from a busy community as they spend time in nature, strolling among tall trees, prairie grassland, native plants, and abundance of wildlife. The Preserve is well known as a birding destination. * The Preserve was acquired with a combination of funds from a Conservation Futures grant and Pierce County Surface Water Management funds. Pierce County Parks is now the custodian.
