SAUNACONNOISSEURS

Our exclusive and extraordinary sauna world is at the heart of the Park Spa. It's the Finns that originally taught us about the positive effects of a sauna. And while they didn't invent it, they've cultivated and mastered every aspect of it – for well over 2000 years! However, there's one thing even the Finns would be jealous of: the many possibilities our Park Spa offers! Mignon's sauna 101 for bon vivants:

hot air baths were originally a widespread custom amongst East Asian farmers , a sort of recreational post-work activity. Archaeologists also found evidence of earlier sauna forms in Mexico while ancient legends suggest that even the Eskimos loved to take a good steam bath from time to time. Likewise, the Romans were fond of saunas, with some of their emperors even building public

baths for this purpose. To this day, archaeologists aren't sure whether the sauna was invented independently in different places or if it actually originated in Asia. What we know for sure is that the sweat bath came to Finland about 1,500 years ago, where it has developed ever since.

Incidentally, the word sauna is of Finnish origin and means sweat room.

Beneficial to your health.

A sauna is good for you! It stimulates the blood circulation and boosts the immune system, helping you prevent colds and flus. As a reaction to the heat, the body activates your defence cells. The blood vessels expand, the heart rate raises and the respiratory rate increases – the muscles relax.

During a fifteen-minute sauna session, the body can shed up to half a litre of sweat. In the process, the body gets the necessary fluids from the muscles, the fat and connective tissue. These fluids move into the blood, and with them the metabolic waste that accumulates in the tissue over time. Moreover, hot air is beneficial to the respiratory system.

As a positive side effect, it thoroughly cleanses the pores of your skin. As a result, the active ingredients of body creams are absorbed through the skin more efficiently after a sauna.

Tailored sweating

Since different individuals perceive the beneficial effects of heat in different ways, we've designed our Park Spa sauna world as a flexible ecosystem, creating different zones for your specific requirements. Once again, a harmonious interplay between oriental and Mediterranean elements ensures a serene and unique atmosphere.

Four Seasons – the Four Seasons Sauna: Since the requirements of the human body change with the seasons, we designed our sauna specifically to address all the different needs. Both the temperature and humidity are maintained

at optimum levels to match the seasonal requirements.

Bamboo Hyperthermae: 85° temperature with 20% humidity. For those who like it hot! The healing effects of high temperatures and low humidity are undisputed.

Mediterraneo: 38° temperature with 70% humidity. Pleasant, humid heat has a relaxing effect on the body and is particularly well suited for people who can't tolerate high temperatures.

Salina cave: 42° temperature with 100% humidity. Inhale beneficial minerals, salts and

aromas and open up your respiratory system.

Mountain View Bio Sauna: Dress On, 60° temperature. Enjoy a medium-hot sauna experience on the roof garden while taking in the breath-taking mountain landscape.

Glacier ice: For a gentle cool down. Gets the circulation going, the immune system is strengthened, the health effect of the sauna session is underlined.

All Senses: Let a unique blend of aromas, sounds and colours stimulate your senses and feel the effect on your body and soul.

A safe haven for your soul

»Guests used to be “Kommot” and not as stressed as today« Zenzi Glatt

With a love for detail

HOSTS FOR PASSION

The Glatt-Amort-Ellmenreich hotelier family is originally from Merano and its history has been shaped by women for three generations. Strong, joyful and always in touch with the needs of their guests. Let's look back on the formative years and take a glimpse into the future with all

its challenges. Our success story begins in 1948, when Zenzi and her husband Engelbert Glatt founded their first hotel, the Mignon in the Otto-Huber-Straße in Merano, fulfilling their longheld dream of owning a hotel. A busy, hardworking, tireless woman, Zenzi Glatt quickly

made the Mignon one of the top addresses in Merano. Actors, aristocrats, stars and celebrities of that time lodged at the Mignon, the guest book from back then could be mistaken for a socialite magazine. Zenzi often talked about this time: “There was actress Maria Schell, for example

She was married to director Veit Relin." In the early 1960s, when Zenzi's grandson Ernst was still a baby, Schell always wanted to hold him in her arms. "I want such a sweet little thing from you!", she would whisper in Veit Relin's ear. And then Marie Theres was born, who also became an actress. All this happened at the old "Mignon" in the Otto-Huber-Straße in Merano. Zenzi also remembers a pianist from Denmark who stayed at the Mignon and treated her arthritic fingers with radon cures in the Kurmittelhaus (physiotherapy center) next door. In the afternoon, she met up with Ezra Pound for tea at the Mignon. At that time, the great American poet, who also was a big admirer of Mussolini and thus imprisoned as a traitor after the American invasion, lived in seclusion on the Brunnenburg with his daughter Mary. In one of her last interviews, Zenzi pensively stated that the guests used to be more "komot" (easy going) and not as stressed as today. While the ladies in big hats strolled along the spa promenade, the gentlemen puffed on cigars and drank whiskey in the hotel salon. Prince Sayn von Wittgenstein, also a guest at the Mignon, drank a bottle of hard liquor every day. He then travelled from the Mignon to Munich, where he shot himself at the Bayerischer Hof. "Thank God he didn't do it here!" said Zenzi. His dramatic departure would have been bad for business at the Mignon.

"In Meran they bathe in buttermilk" was a headline in the German "Bild" newspaper in the early 1950s, which is still in a

folder with newspaper cutouts in the family archive. In the article, the Hotel Villa Mignon was mentioned and described down to the smallest detail. Zenzi proved to be far-sighted: at the old Mignon in the Otto Huber Straße, there was already a sauna and underwater massages. Yes, Zenzi was quietly laying the foundations for our three guest houses, which are now run by the 4th generation of our family. In the early 1960s, the family bought a large plot of land on the Grabmayr Strasse and built the Park Hotel Mignon.

Together with her husband Engelbert and daughter Irmgard,

Zenzi was also managing the "new" Park Hotel Mignon. The ladies entertained the guests, taking care of their physical and mental well-being, while Engelbert coordinated all the technical aspects, maintaining the building and the grounds. "As long as he was in good shape, we rarely had to call a handyman."

Engelbert Glatt took his janitor ob so seriously that a female guest, who wasn't familiar with the internal structure of the Park Hotel Mignon, took Zenzi to the side and whispered in her ear: "This man with the apron around his belly (Engelbert), he was

sweeping the courtyard early in the morning , you must treat him well! It's not easy to find people like him these days”.

Irmgard Glatt-Amort says that her mother Zenzi enjoyed being at the centre of the action. "Everything has always revolved around her," she says. If you flick through the folder with pictures and newspaper articles that Zenzi has meticulously collected over the years, you'll notice that Irmgard always keeps in the background. "I don't need to be courted and admired," she says with a smile

on her face. Always working and acting discreetly, she's a calm soul and always moves mindfully through all hotel areas. And there's nothing she can't do!

Zenzi's granddaughter Sissi experienced the 1960s through the eyes of a child. With her, the third generation of the family is at the helm of the Glatt-Amort hotel business. Already in 1983, when she was still a young girl, she took over the management of the Art Nouveau Hotel Adria in Obermais, which was acquired by the family at the time, skilfully

leading her team with utmost commitment in a bid to make it a cult-hotel. Today she devotes herself entirely to the guests of the Park Hotel Mignon while her husband Florian is guiding the destiny of the Hotel Adria.

In spring of 2020, the legendary founder of the Amort Hotels, Zenzi Glatt, passed away peacefully at the age of 105, surrounded by her loving family.

Under the leadership of the Glatt ladies, the Park Hotel Mignon has developed into "the" 5-star hotel it is today, a fine establishment with an impeccable international reputation right in the heart of Merano. The elaborate sculpture with the three women at the entrance of the Mignon symbolises the successful story of our power-ladies, which is characterised by a big passion for hospitality and loving solidarity. With Zenzi's great-grandson Philipp, the 4th generation of the family is taking over the Park Hotel Mignon, of course with the help of his mother and grandmother.

Looking to the future with motivation

Particularly in challenging times like these, it's hard to further establish yourself as an exclusive hideaway for bon vivants. The world is constantly changing, and with it the people and their needs.

"We don't follow trends and focus on the essentials while trying to keep with the times. It is our aim to provide guests with a priceless experience and unforgettable moments" says Philipp Ellmenreich. "We want to inspire our guests, guide them towards new dimensions of joy while actively contributing to their relaxation, health and well-being," adds Sissi Amort-Ellmenreich.

»Art and social commitment were her elixir of long life«
Zenzi

A LIFE DEDICATED TO THE ARTS

Not only was Zenzi Glatt an extraordinary host, but also a passionate artist. What started spontaneously as a hobby at the tender age of 59, became a sweet obsession that left us with some extraordinary artwork.

Painted in different formats and with different techniques, her work could be either totally abstract or exude a hint of colourful, radiant nature. Her

work reflects her positive and life-affirming personality, which, as she ironically remarked, she managed to retain even after two world wars, National Socialism and fascism in South Tyrol, nine popes and two emperors.

Zenzi Glatt preferred large formats and kept experimenting with new materials – from marble dust and sand to acrylic paint.

She never wanted to sell her work to make a profit. When she sold a painting, it was exclusively to promote charitable causes. Art and social commitment were the elixirs of Zenzi Glatt’s long 105year life.

The work of the eccentric, unique artist and landlady now adorns the walls of the Park Hotel Mignon and is a visible legacy of an unforgettable personality.

Rediscovering Merano

A PLACE TO GATHER

Once you get here, you don't want to leave – that’s what the unique Merano feeling with its colourful contrasts does to you. A symbiosis of Mediterranean finesse, rustic mountain nature and elegant palmflair. Extremely contemporary, with an extraordinary cultural drive that promotes the peaceful coexistence of South Tyrolean and Italian lifestyles while uniting German and Italian cultural history.

Connoisseur Circle travel report by Angelica Freyler

Describing Meran in a few words is nearly possible. The little spa town on the river Passirio in South Tyrol is magical, luxurious, trendy, young yet ancient, very elegant but at the same time casual, romantic and discreet. It’s just as loud as it is quiet and there's something special for everyone. Whether you're a bon vivant seeking a luxury break, a passionate gourmet, an explorer looking for the ultimate blend of history and modernity or a real individualist, the most Mediterranean city in the Alps unites supposed opposites, creating an atmosphere second to none.

Throughout its history, Merano has sought and found answers to the Zeitgeist. The city became a popular hangout for aristocrats, poets and writers who were looking for inspiration to create important works and, of course, to heal in the mild climate with its crystalclear air. This is how elegant contemporary testimonies from different historical periods came to life, most of which we can still admire today. The "Menschenbilder" exhibition (people in pictures) on the Passerpromenade tells us more about this, portraying and commemorating ten personalities who have made an extraordinary contribution to Merano's cultural history.

Even Austrian Empress Elisabeth visited Meran on several occasions, enjoying all the amenities the noble spa town had to offer. Monuments such as the Sissi statue and Sissi Park were erected in her honour. While strolling through the park in the footsteps of Sissi, you'll notice a mysterious little door standing wide open on an old stately home, the Freischütz villa. Should we dive into a world of cultural history? Vintage, retro and curious adventure stories, Merano is full of it!

Experience history

Built in the Art Nouveau era, the all-white Kurhaus is the undisputed symbol of Merano.

Aristocrats walked up and down its promenade cleansing their lungs with Merano's healthy air, which is renowned for its beneficial effects. At the time, only well-dressed citizens were allowed on the spa promenade. There were also several rooms where the illustrious society smoked pipes and cigars, played games, engaged in conversations and read to their heart's content. Even gambling was a thing at the Kurhaus. Today it's Merano’s number one location for conventions, concerts, events, balls and conferences.

One of the oldest hotels in Merano, known today as Hotel Adria, bears a real treasure – a lift from 1914. An authentic gem

of 20th century engineering, the lift is a true witness of its time and has worked reliably for over a century, moving guests between the ground and top floors of the Art Nouveau villa in its beautiful wooden cabin with glass windows and an upholstered bench.

The most important museum of Merano hides behind the historic walls of the baroque Palais Mammig. The displayed collection gives you an overview of the various historical periods that have shaped the town and its surroundings. The tour starts in prehistoric times and leads up to modern art. Amongst the most intriguing items of the

collection are some "exotic" relics, like an Egyptian mummy, an adventurer's weapon collection, Peter Mitterhofer's typewriter and a death mask of Napoleon.

The 15th Prince's castle is a treasure trove for all history enthusiasts. Living spaces such as the kitchen, bathroom and the armoury are perfectly preserved, taking visitors on a unique and enjoyable journey back in time!

An absolute must-see is the Trauttmansdorff Castle with its famous botanical gardens, where Emperor Franz Josef and Empress Sissi once resided. In an exemplary symbiosis of nature and art, Trautmannsdorf extends over 12 hectares, where you can

experience and admire over 80 garden landscapes from all over the world – at any time of the year. The Botanical gardens were awarded the 2013 "International Garden of the Year" prize and are among the most beautiful in the world.

Dolce vita in Merano

Exuding historical flair from every cobblestone, Merano embraces a refreshing "feel good" attitude that belongs to its lifestyle just as its mountains and palm trees. The most blatant example? The locals love to spend warm summer afternoons in the piazza. The terraces on the Passirio river are the ideal place to cool your feet

down after a long stroll through town. The beating heart of Merano is undoubtedly the Laubengasse, a 13th century arcade alley that tastefully blends traditional history with modern trends and design. The arcades were built by Meinhard II, Count of Tyrol, while the facades originate from different stylistic periods – particularly striking are the bay windows. The arcade alley is closed to traffic and forms the main shopping district of Merano, offering a unique shopping experience for both locals and tourists. Alongside modern international clothing brands you'll find many fine "Made in Italy" boutiques. If you want to enjoy a cup of coffee in the quietest corner of Merano, take a seat on the terrace of the 5* Parkhotel Mignon and sip on a fluffy cappuccino while soaking up the breath-taking views over the park surrounding our hotel in the heart of Merano. A place that thrives on fine, elegant details! Another special detail: with its 69 fountains and running wells, Merano has plenty of deliciouslyfresh drinking water for all its dolce-vita bon vivants, which comes almost exclusively from natural springs in the surrounding valleys. At the weekly Friday market, immerse yourself in Merano's invigorating, energetic life while drifting away into an exciting new world of smells, impressions and sounds. Freshly harvested produce and natural foods, Italian herbs and a huge variety of goods with countless fragrances and aromas to discover. The stalls are run by small local shops and Italian trade stands alike. Haggling allowed! Another highlight is Merano's Saturday Farmers Market, where you can buy fresh and natural produce directly from

local farmers, including fruit, vegetables and local farm products like speck (smoked ham), cheese and bread as well as traditional handicrafts. A very special experience in itself.

Healthy relaxation

Right in the heart of the city, you'll find the prestigious and wellknown thermal baths of Merano. The thermal water originates from several springs on the Monte San Vigilio and is particularly rich in radon, which has been used for many years to treat various conditions. Above all, the vapours of the water have a positive effect on the respiratory system.

Enjoying nature

If you need a moment to process the overwhelming cultural and

historical offer and want to explore the boundless wealth of nature, you can jump on a cable and get from Merano into the mountains in exactly 7 minutes. Once you get to the top and the doors open, you'll be catapulted into a parallel dimension of hiking, biking and alpine skiing that leaves everyone speechless, regardless of whether you're an enthusiastic mountaineer or laidback Sunday hiker.

No matter how many times you've been to Merano, you'll rediscover this magical town again and again, every single time you visit. What always remains unchanged is the fascination this place emanates and the stark contrasts its culture life thrives on.

»Most of Merano's key locations can be reached from our hotels on foot«

The Amort Hotels are also the ideal starting point for countless sporting activities. Bon vivants

In the past lies the power of the future

Open to new dreams. Historical adventures. In a modern key.

"Seeing modernity through the eyes of tradition –This is the unique experience we want our guests to have."

Your host, Florian Ellmenreich

For peopleoriginal OLD WALLS, YOUNG SPIRIT

Right in the heart of Merano's villa district Maia Alta stands a listed Art Nouveau jewel. If you like stories, the Kulthotel Adria is the place to be. For explorers and free spirits, travellers and art lovers alike. If you're looking for the extraordinary and want to immerse yourself in a different era, when nothing was more important than beauty in Merano, La Belle Époque Revival is what you’re looking for.

Historical adventures.

Behind every detail, small or big, there's a special story and a fragment of Merano's traditions. And it's important to keep these traditions alive, and perhaps even make them tangible. Footsteps echoing from the terrazzo flooring to the furthest corner of the high ceilings. A chandelier that could tell a million stories and the oldest elevator in Merano. The notches in the iron railings and the ancient

paintings urge you to philosophise about the glorious olden days.

What time is it?

It doesn't matter. Time seems to stand still at the Adria anyway. Breakfast is served almost until noon. Italian delicacies to awake your senses from a well deserved sleep-in, your favourite newspaper fresh from the printers and a fluffy cappuccino to top it all off.

Relaxing and swimming in the extravagant spa is good for your soul. Driven by an urge to stay active, stroll downriver into town for a healthy binge of culture and architecture. When strolling through the narrow alleys of the old town of Merano, you’ll recognise many of the Adria's elegant character traits – and suddenly everything makes sense.

Now it's time to write your own story.

Of coincidences and encounters

AN EVENTFUL HISTORY

It all started with a young waiter from Thuringia. When Ferdinand Langguth arrived in 1868, Merano was still a sleepy town. He found a job in one of the few hotels and stayed for three years – and married the daughter of the owner in that time. The two worked hard and managed to build a hotel in Maia Alta in 1885. It was the beginning of an incredible story.

Why Maia Alta? Just look around: mansions, castles, villas. For centuries, Maia Alta has been Merano's exclusive residential area. It's no coincidence that Elisabeth, the Empress of Austria, chose this part of Merano when she stayed in our town on three different occasions between 1870 and 1889. The Austria, which was the name of the hotel at the time, was doing so well that the owners decided to complement it with a magnificent palace:

»If our lift could speak, what stories would it tell?«

The Villa Impériale, 30 rooms. The Princes of Thurn and Taxis rented it for an entire season. It's the year 1900, tourism is booming and the Belle Époque is in full swing. In 1914, Ferdinand Langguth added one more floor, extending the Austria to its current size. While he was at it, he refurbished the whole house, installing new bathrooms, an elevator and central heating.

Shortly after the constructions were done, the first World War was unleashed and abruptly disrupted tourism in Merano. Ferdinand Langguth suffered a stroke soon afterwards, and never recovered. The Hotel Austria was passed onto their children who were faced with major political challenges: after the bill of peace in Versailles, Italy expropriated the German citizens in Alto Adige. The family Langguth lost the Hotel Austria, half of the Adria fell into the hands of the Italian Government, the other half was sold to an entrepreneur from Val Gardena. This entrepreneur was Rosa Lardschneider: there are many unanswered questions on how she managed to strike a deal in the middle of this political turmoil. Lardschneider was the one who changed the name of the Hotel Austria to its current name: Hotel Adria; historians assume

this decision was taken to appeal to a wider audience. In 1933, Lardschneider decided to leave the country to continue living in Germany after the “Option” (the agreement between Hitler and Mussolini for ethnical cleansing of South Tyrol); however in the last second bought the other half of the Hotel from the Italian Government and refused to leave the country.

From 1943, the Hotel Adria, like many other hotels in the area, was used as a hospital for german soldiers in the area. After the Second World War, Josef, the son of Rosa Lardschneider who had learned business and entrepreneurship in Rome, joined

the management of the Hotel. In 1968 he constructed the Villa next to the Adria, connected it to the main building of the Adria and had the first ever inside pool in Merano built in the Villa.

In 1971 Josef Lardschneider died in a tragic car accident, and his widow continued leading the hotel for several years, until she decided to sell the property to the family Glatt-Amort in 1983. There are many more stories to be told around the Adria, and we invite you to discover them!

So much history! And if you wander through the corridors now, you'll see the Adria and its countless details with different eyes.

The original from 1914: the oldest lift in Merano

Electric passenger lifts were already in use in Europe in the late 19th century. A contemporary witness of this great progress still works reliably to this day, taking hotel guests from the ground floor to the upper floors and back down – and has been doing so for 108 years!

When you stand in the elegant wooden lift cabin with its glass windows and upholstered bench, you can't help but wonder what

stories it would tell if it could speak. Romance. Drama. Passion. And countless anecdotes of a forgotten time. You still have to close the inner doors by yourself, the cabin jiggles and creaks, but every single trip is a relaxing, soul-soothing experience.

Aside from the nostalgic character "under the vintage bonnet hides state-of-the-art technology", says owner and host Florian

Ellmenreich. "The technical modernisation of the lift, which dates back to around 10 years ago, was necessary to meet the current safety regulations and was more a matter of the heart than a marketing stunt" continues Mr. Ellmenreich.

But was it worth the effort? "The lift runs and runs and runs without causing any problem at all. And that’s since 1914!"

Living tradition with an eye towards the future

LITERARY MOMENTS

We wanted the Adria to be a place of encounters. Real encounters between people. Encounters with the history that has shaped Merano and our house. Not only will you enjoy a well-deserved holiday but also embark on a unique journey through time. Testimonies of an eventful past are scattered all over the rooms and corridors. Over time, we have carefully preserved, restored

and refreshed all these historical witnesses, because we cherish our memories and love to share our history with others. We are wary of modern trends and only embrace them if they suit our identity.

Take your time to venture on an extraordinary literary journey in our history-drenched library, just like the first wealthy spa

guests, the scholars and creative people used to do. Take a seat, browse through the books and newspapers in total peace while floating away into another dimension. Listen, converse and enjoy the interaction. Italian espresso or cup of tea? And in the evening a glass of wine at the legendary Adria Bar. Raise your glass to the first guests of the Adria and embrace their spirit.

“Throughout all these years, nothing has been more important to us than offering genuine hospitality." Now, as before, that's what we strive for with our dedicated team."

"If I wanted to enjoy the Adria breakfast one day in each corner that fascinates and inspires me, I'd have to check-in for weeks. Maybe that's exactly what I'm going to do..."

From back then to now

BREAKFAST LOVE

Starting off the day with a delicious, hearty breakfast and enjoying every single bite without rushing – that’s another old tradition at the Adria. Alpine influences, Mediterranean touch. That's our breakfast in a nutshell. Sounds contradictory? Well, opposites attract, fascinate and... yes, taste good too! The Adria breakfast reflects its varied surroundings. Sometimes it’s a

freshly-baked braided brioche (with palm tree views), sometimes poached eggs (with hilltop views), sometimes light and sometimes hearty – but always fresh and lovingly prepared. No time pressure until 12 o'clock. And you're free to enjoy it wherever you want. Whether it's in the sunny garden, in the elegant breakfast room, the library, the reception lounge, the historic

corridors or the legendary wine terrace, the choice is yours. Pick the place that most inspires you.

But what about the evening? With several Dine Around partner restaurants in the immediate vicinity of Merano's villa district and the old part of town, you can embark on a different taste adventure every day. Ask us for our top picks!

The Adria Hotel is an Art Nouveau jewel situated in the heart of the Obermais neighbourhood in Merano. Florian Ellmenreich, host and storyteller at Merano’s first selfproclaimed “iconic hotel”, the Hotel Adria, who shares anecdotes from the history of this landmarked Art Nouveau gem in the middle of the city’s mansion district, Maia Alta.

A talk with Historic South Tyrol - an association of excellent historic hotels and inns in South Tyrol - www.historicsouthtyrol.com

Historic: What’s iconic about this place?

Florian Ellmenreich, Host at the Adria

Our motto is: ‘Original remains original.’ We have re-staged what this old house offered. And that’s iconic for us.

‘Original remains original.’ Could you explain the motto?

This is a historic building: not straightforward Art Nouveau, but a so-called eclectic style using various elements from the years 1870–1880. The construction and the materials are typical for that era: terrazzo flooring, solidwood parquet floors, the staircase in ‘biancone veronese’, marble from outside of Verona. Some of the elements originate in the time of reconstruction by builders Musch & Lun in 1914. We still have the original lift car, for example. We excavated all these originals over time. The parquet floor, for example, had been hidden under carpets since the 1960s or 1970s. We exposed it centimetre by centimetre as part of the reconstruction. Some spots creak when you step on them. That’s when I tell you the Adria ghost is talking to you. We turned presumed architectural weaknesses like a creaky floor or a not-fully-closing door into strengths. You won’t find that anywhere else. Hence: Original remains original.

The beds are made—with style and the knowledge of generations. The history of this original began in 1868, when waiter Ferdinand Langguth from Thuringia arrived in the drowsy little town of Merano and fell in love with an innkeeper’s daughter. In 1885, the hardworking couple were able to build a hotel in Obermais (Maia Alta). Why there?

Maia Alta was only sparsely populated then, but already a residential area for the upper class. Some of the villas, castles, and residences

»Why the Adria’s spirit speaks to the guests in Maia Alta...«

here date back to the late Middle Ages. In 1840, the first sanatorium of Merano was opened here, just opposite the hotel: Dr. Mazegger’s cold water sanatorium. This doctor brought many guests to Merano with his massages and Kneipp baths. It was the first institution of its kind, far beyond the borders of Tyrol, and it marked the beginning of the health spa business in Maia Alta. Wealthy guests including the Empress Elisabeth (Sisi) came here; of course, they required adequate accommodation in the vicinity.

The hotel was called Hotel Austria then. Where does its modern name Hotel Adria come from, given it is quite far away from the Adriatic?

After World War I, South Tyrol joined Italy. Tourism restarted in Merano, only then the guests came from Italy. The fascists Italianised

»Today, everything has to be quick, even on holiday. Our hotel, however, calls for slowness«

many names. Obviously, the name Hotel Austria should have been replaced given that Italians and Austrians had just finished beating each other up. Still, the clever owner, whose name was Rosa Mair, managed to keep the name. When they did rename the hotel eventually, it was for commercial reasons: ‘Austria’ gave the Italian guests a funny feeling, so it was better to find a name Italians associate with holidays: Adria.

An early-1950s headline in the German paper ‘Bild’ read, ‘Buttermilk baths in Merano’. Your mother-in-law, visionary Merano hotel pioneer Zenzi Glatt, shaped that era before she bought the Hotel Adria in 1983.

Yes, like many hoteliers, Zenzi went to a health spa during the winter season. When she returned, she told her family, ‘I bought a hotel’—the Hotel Adria. My wife, Sissi Amort, was 21 years old at the time, and the family told her to run the new hotel. Which she did, quite successfully.

Zenzi Glatt referred to guests back in the day as ‘kommod’, meaning comfortable, easygoing. What can modern-day, stressed-out city dwellers do to be ‘kommod’ guests to Zenzi’s liking?

(laughs) People used to spend three to four weeks here to enjoy the fresh air, have a little

chat, a sip of wine, take their time. Today, everything has to be quick, even on holiday. Within five days, I must quickly relax while I manage to do everything from yoga to Pilates to “forest bathing”.

Our hotel is a hub that calls for slowness even through its rooms. They invite you to take a deep breath before you quite casually explore the area: the promenades, the treks along the irrigation channels, the hiking trails. Who needs forest bathing? Just walk from the Adria into Val Passiria.

The trek will lead you through the forest — an oxygen tunnel if you breathe purposely — and that’s all you need!

The power of opposites

MODERN HARMONY

»Twisted straight, modern, traditional and sustainable all rolled into one.«

The splendid villa from the 1900’s in Meranos city centre has been owned and operated by the family Amort as ‘pension Mignon’ since 1948 and over time has become the Residence Désirée. In July 2016, it was time to time to turn a vision into reality. vision become reality, to combine opulent tradition with simple modernity into a new project.

The planning work began for the residence with a bold architectural concept and special attention sustainability for the requirements of a new generation of guests. To ensure the overall effect of the of the new building, the urban planning the urban development situation was situation was analysed in detail. Construction began in February 2017 and after a construction of only seven months under the under the leadership of architect Elmar Unterhauser of EU Architects Merano, the stylish apartment building was opened in September.

The idea of the twisted volume areas

What appears to be particularly successful the surprising solution

to the uniform building into several volumetric areas twisted in relation to each other. It makes for an interesting spatial experience when walking the individual building levels. This results in many other interesting advantages, such as the extended visual axis areas for the existing neighbouring buildings of the Hotel Désirée, which would otherwise be completely obscured. The loosened also reduces the physical presence of the volume of the new building, makes it appear less tall and gives the building an air of floating lightness. The unusual and free position of the building also proves to be useful. All the flats are lit on three sides and can be ventilated transversely

and allow a good view of the of the surrounding mountains. The bathrooms are also located on the facades and can therefore be directly ventilated.

Sustainable travelling

Keeping the ecological footprint as small as possible plays for the Amort-Ellmenreich family a major role in all adaptations and renovations. The flat house is designed as KlimaHaus A. On the photovoltaic panels were installed panels for electricity production and also the green roof itself has a retention effect.

Rainwater can be collected and used for flushing toilets and watering the garden.

LIFE'S GOOD Design Appartements

Over 100 years of history separate the two buildings. In our eyes, the stark contrasts complement their characters. The extension presents itself with clear, contemporary shapes and straight lines.

The elegant sobriety carries on to the inside where, together with the materials and colours of the surroundings, makes a pleasant

change from all the opulence you’re experiencing on your holiday in Merano. Of course, you can use the underground car park, the spa area and the pool in the villa garden.

The apartments are all divided into living units with a downstream sleeping area, with sizes varying between 42 to 48 square metres.

Particularly interesting is the option of connecting the smaller 2-room apartments to form larger 3- or 4-room units.

The apartments come equipped with a flat-screen TV with cable channels, filter coffee machine, kettle, microwave, hair dryer. Towels, bedlinen and tea towels are available too.
