YANMAR

COMPACT
YOU BUILD WE BUILD IT WITH YOU.

On display was the 17.45, the largest in the range and part of the Faresin ‘Big Range Full Electric’ series, which includes 14.42, 17.40 and 17.45 models, offering maximum lifting capacities of 4.2, 4.0 and 4.5 tonnes respectively.

Each built around the same chassis platform and featuring a 45kW/h (105Ah) battery, these electric machines offer run times of up to 8 hours non-intensive use and up to 3.5 hours intensive use. Further innovation on the charging side, sees an onboard charger as standard, offering 0-80% charge in 4 hours and 0-100% charge in 6 hours. There is also a universal charging socket, identical to the type used on motor vehicles, which also features intelligent charging to ensure that the machines can be charged with whatever power source is available on site, including single or three-phase options.

GGR’s Marketing & Special Projects Director, Daniel Ezzatvar, said: “The work that has been done on the battery technology is best-in-class at the moment and the developments that have been made truly lend themselves to making the machines better suited to the practicalities of electric infrastructure on today’s construction sites.

“After being involved in this project from the beginning and seeing how the product has evolved in response to data and user feedback, it is safe to say that it has been a truly collaborative effort. Everyone has had their part to play Faresin as the manufacturer, GGR as

the main importer and our trail-blazing customers, who initially took a leap of faith, but have now seen that the equipment is proven and reliable in the field.

“You only need to look at the fact that nine 17m machines were pre-ordered as soon as the product was announced. That was without even having the opportunity to demo the new machines. The 6.26 full electrics have proven themselves and the technology works.

The UK launch of the 17m full electric telehandler comes exactly a year after Faresin’s 330, 400 and 560ah batteries were launched at Vertikal Days 2022, with GGR naming the path dividing theirs and JCB’s stands ‘Electric Avenue’, a feature that was also included at this year’s event – a statement in support of electric, in the face of JCB’s hydrogen technology.

Ezzatvar added: “The launch of the 560ah was arguably the innovation of the show last year. To put things into perspective, our smallest 330ah battery is more of a direct comparison with what JCB is offering in their electric telehandler. Ok it’ll do a job, but if you want to something that you could seriously consider replacing a diesel machine with, then you need to be looking at the 440ah at least, but certainly the 560ah will do the job.

“Unfortunately, it is well documented in the press that hydrogen is being considered as the only viable option for larger plant, leaving electric to be considered for small plant only.

“In telehandlers alone, Faresin have the big range full electrics, going up to 17m and another competitor, Manitou have launched an 18m roto. These products are viable and they work. In my opinion, manufacturers have an obligation to maximise the potential of the technology that is available before pushing for alternatives. Big electric is here and now, whereas hydrogen is a long way off before it can be considered a viable option. Even then, it should be used in applications where there is a constant and continuous demand for power.

“If you ask me which technology is going to win, battery or hydrogen, my answer is that there is a place for both. Each will have their place at the party. Of course battery will have limitations against hydrogen, they cater for different power demands, but to write-off battery as only being suitable for smaller equipment is nonsense. No amount of lobbying or ‘hydrogen-washing’ can hide the fact that there is a lot of innovation being done in relation to battery power and right now it is on the market, available and already making an impact to the sustainability of today’s construction sites.”

LIEBHERR PRESENTS THE NEW LH 26 M TIMBER LITRONIC AT LIGNA 2023 IN HANOVER

Liebherr unveiled the new LH 26 M Timber Litronic for efficient timber handling at the world’s leading trade fair LIGNA in Hanover, which took place on 15 May 2023. Thanks to its extremely compact design and exceptional manoeuvrability, this specialist machine is ideal for use in sawmills and lumber yards where space is at a premium.

The new handling machine also boasts impressively low fuel consumption when operating at maximum capacity. Liebherr also demonstrated its new integrated tyre pressure monitoring system on the material handler for the first time.

With the LH 26 M Timber Litronic, Liebherr will present a new timber truck to the public at LIGNA that extends its existing portfolio to include a lighter machine with an operating mass of between 23,500 and 26,000 kg. Liebherr will also showcase its new, integrated tyre pressure monitoring system as part of its trade fair exhibit. This system allows the desired target tyre pressure to be set and monitored on the display in the operator’s cab. The system will be optionally available for Liebherr material handlers from October.

Liebherr’s trade fair exhibit also included a straight 6.6 m long boom and a 5 m long stick with an angled stick end as well as a Liebherr type GM 10B wood grapple with a capacity of up to 1.30 m². The machine configuration also includes the 1.2 m high, rigid cab elevation LFC 120 for optimum visibility and a 3 m wide support blade at the rear. Maximum splash protection is provided thanks to the hot-dip galvanised mudguards, which also serve as a platform for easy and safe access to the operator’s cab.

The new machine combines high driving performance with compact dimensions

The engine power of 125 kW / 170 hp provides the system with a large amount of torque, which allows the machine to accelerate quickly. In combination with the high pump flow, this guarantees fast, dynamic work movements and therefore maximum handling capacity.

Thanks to its compact design, the new machine is ideal for use in confined spaces. It’s extremely small front and tail swing radius enables the machine to turn around completely even in very narrow operating locations. The minimal contours of the right front side enable the machine to work very close to sorting

lines or timber stacks as it is always within the width of the undercarriage. This ensures an excellent view of the working area, ensures additional safety and prevents collisions.

Four-wheel steering for greater manoeuvrability and integrated tyre pressure monitoring system

To ensure excellent manoeuvrability and agility, the LH 26 M Timber is equipped with four-wheel steering as standard. The four-wheel steering increases driving stability and thus improves the machine’s directional stability. The automatic steering reversal, which is also standard, guarantees the correct steering direction at all times, when travelling both forwards and in reverse.

To allow the operator to keep an eye on the tyre pressures, the machine features Liebherr’s new integrated tyre pressure monitoring system. The desired target tyre pressure can be set on the display in the operator’s cab. If the current tyre pressure deviates from the set target pressure, a warning is shown on the display. The integrated monitoring system not only increases safety, but also results in increased driving comfort as well as reduced tyre wear.

Optimised undercarriage concept with efficient travel mode for trailer operation

The electric pivoting angle adjustment in the travel motor provides additional torque, maximum acceleration and a higher drawbar pull. This ensures a consistently good driving performance even on inclines. Optimal adjustment of both the engine speed and flow rate ensures impressive fuel efficiency even at top speed.

For longer distances, the combination of a material handler and trailer is the optimal choice. The powerful travel drive and robust axles enable the machine to tow trailers with a weight of up to 60 tonnes.

The 3 m wide undercarriage and rear support blade give the machine a high degree of stability during handling operations, which also means the load capacity can be further increased; for example, when loading and unloading the trailer. This enables more timber to be handled during each cycle to increase productivity. The support blade can also be used for clearing work and thus increases safety in the timber yard.

• Powerful machine for efficient timber handling

• Thanks to its compact design, it is ideal for use in sawmills and lumber yards with limited space

• The new addition is the smallest machine in Liebherr’s existing portfolio of material handlers in the 25-tonne range

REVOLUTIONISING FUEL MANAGEMENT IN CONSTRUCTION: PIUSI LAUNCHES

THE 3000 SUPREME SMART PUMP FOR THE B.SMART

centre Tank Services will be revealing their newest innovation at this year’s Plantworx exhibition - the Piusi 3000 Supreme. This intelligent running pump will revolutionise the way sites’ fuel is controlled, dispensed, and managed.

The Piusi 3000 Supreme will make its debut at the event, with live demonstrations taking place of its integration with the Piusi B. SMART; a cloud-based fuel management system for remote and real time monitoring of your sites’ fuel use. The three-day event taking place in Peterborough from June 13th to 15th, is the perfect platform for the CTS team to give attendees a first-hand look as Piusi’s official UK agent.

After the recent changes to the red diesel tax scheme significantly increasing the price per litre, and many construction projects being tendered for prior, managing a site’s fuel has become more important than ever. With construction companies looking for ways to make every drop count, this technology has come at exactly the right time.

So, how do the Piusi 3000 Supreme and B. SMART together help to eliminate the risk of wastage and misuse of a company’s fuel?

Firstly, by only allowing the pump to be turned on and fuel dispensed by authorised smartphone app holders, it secures the fuel from opportunists when a site is left unattended. In addition, its ability to record dispensing data such as quantity of fuel taken, the date and time, provides a greater handle on how your fuel is being used helping to spot any anomalies. This data supplied from Supremes on fuel tanks across unlimited sites can be sent to the B. SMART online portal, allowing you to see how your fuel is being used across all sites wherever you are.

As well as the fuel management benefits, the smart Supreme pump manages its own operation to save worker’s time and eliminate causes of pump failure.

Not only can you pre-set the number of litres to dispense, it will automatically stop running if your tank runs out of fuel to protect itself from dry run damage, and can slow its motor down to prevent overheating, allowing it to be continuously run without consideration unlike other battery powered models.

“We’re excited to be launching the Piusi 3000 Supreme at the Plantworx exhibition,” said Gurdeep Lakhanpal, Sales Manager of Centre Tank Services. “We truly believe that it’s going to benefit the construction industry and site managers hugely. We have researched data provided by Shell that suggests almost 5% of fuel costs are from misuse, and this pump can limit these issues. We can’t wait for attendees to see it in action and experience all the benefits it has to offer.”

Overall, the Piusi 3000 Supreme smart technology and B. SMART software integration is the perfect secure refuelling solution for job sites of all sizes, whether installed on a static tank or a bowser. If you are attending Plantworx in June, be sure to stop by stand A-C9 to see it in action!

SPILLARD SAFETY SYSTEMS AND FLANNERY AGREE CONTRACT EXTENSION TO IMPROVE SITE SAFETY

one of the UK’s leading plant hire specialists has extended its working relationship with Spillard Safety Systems to help it reduce accidents on site and keep workers safe. Flannery, which has more than 1700 operators supporting its nationwide client base, has invested in ‘SpillardLive’, fitting it to 180 machines so that it can benefit from the human detection system, 360-degree cameras and real time feedback on driver performance.

The intuitive cloud-based platform captures and streams real time video and analytics simultaneously from multiple cameras fitted to plant equipment and vehicles, reducing risks, protecting lives, and saving the firm hundreds of thousands of pounds.

It has been developed and tailored in collaboration with Flannery to have the maximum impact, with feedback on trials being fed into enhancing many of the features of the system.

With up to 5200 machines in its fleet, the plant hire expert is continuing with this project and is now planning to roll-out the technology to the rest of its equipment over the next three years.

“I’m delighted we have been able to expand our working relationship with the team at Flannery…the difference the initial roll-out has made is significant and will only grow as more operators are trained on the system,” explained Pete Spillard, Managing Director of Spillard Safety Systems.

“SpillardLive has been proven to increase the safety of machine operators and other members of staff on or

around the site and is fast progressing into a valuable business information system when the client is looking to upskill employees and achieve greater productivity.”

He continued: “When the ignition is switched on, these cameras can virtually map out a five-metre ‘red zone’, a further away ‘amber zone’ and a ‘green zone’ that indicates a safe distance. The data for that machine can be accessed from our platform and the live journey of that vehicle can be checked.

“This system means that a machine can track patterns and help highlight where changes need to be made on site. For example, a machine could detect that a person has encroached into the dedicated ‘red zone’ around fifty times at around three o’clock each day.

“This data would then go to an appointed person who would see a clear pattern forming and be able to change site parameters to accommodate the need to enter that area at that time of day.”

Spillard and Flannery have been working together since 2009 and continue to collaborate with operators to fine-tune the Human Detection System to identify any behavioural changes.

These could be if an operator is showing signs of fatigue, if somebody is smoking or using their phone while operating the machine, or even if a driver isn’t present in the vehicle while it is on or meant to be operational.

So far, testing has shown the system works for reducing incidents on site and saving individuals from potentially lifethreatening situations.

Patrick Flannery, Director of Flannery, added his support: “The safety of our operators and those of our clients using our vehicles is paramount, which is why we’ve entered into this agreement with Spillard to incorporate ‘SpillardLive’ onto 180 of our vehicles and equipment.

“Initial results have been very encouraging; we’ve already been able to reduce the number of Plant People Interface (PPI) risks on sites, as well as identifying lots of ways we can train our staff to be better and safer, especially in human detection whilst operating the vehicles.”

Spillard Safety Systems, which has just celebrated 30 years in business, has had its full team of engineers equipping Flannery’s fleet and offers the customer a call out/service window of 24 to 72 hours.

SINOBOOM GROUP CEO SUSAN XU SPEAKS AT IPAF SUMMIT

artificial lntelligence is not an enemy, it just means that humans are not necessarily required to work on the shopfloor or the production line, and they can be utilized elsewhere in the company,” said Sinoboom’s Group CEO Susan Xu during her presentation to this year’s IPAF Summit in Berlin.

Speaking to a packed room of MEWP industry leaders, Susan’s presentation “AI changes the MEWP

industry” focused on current use of AI at Sinoboom, and looked to what might be possible in the future: “We may be able to remove the need for human labour in situations that are dangerous, for instance cleaning windows on skyscrapers, which can be done in automated MEWPs.”

Answering questions from the floor, Susan stressed that she is not afraid of what AI will bring to the industry and urged users and OEMs to embrace

the possibilities.

The IPAF Summit celebrated the 40th birthday of the non-profit organization. A film released at the Summit celebrated its achievements and featured Sinoboom’s own Global Branding Director, Tim Whiteman, talking about his time as CEO of IPAF. The film can be viewed here.

Susan Xu is also a member of the IPAF Council and took the opportunity of the Berlin meeting of the Council to wish IPAF continued success and growth.

GENQUIP GROUNDHOG REAPS THE AWARDS

one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of temporary accommodation units, GenquipGroundhog is celebrating a trio of awards for their iRange of sustainable, low-emission site welfare units.

At the recent Hire Association Europe (HAE) Hire Awards of Excellence ceremony, Genquip-Groundhog was honoured with a ‘Highly Commended’ citation in the ‘Product of the Year’ category for their innovative i550 welfare unit. The i550 welfare unit is powered by a low emission 2kVA engine-driven battery charger system charged by a 1200W inverter. Additional power is via four 360-watt solar panels – roof mounted with a high-capacity charger controller. The i550 welfare units operate from an intelligent solar power and battery system. In addition, the i550 is fitted with a Victron Remote Monitoring system (VRM) that helps the operator to catch potential issues early by setting alerts and alarms. The HAE Hire Awards of Excellence celebrate the amazing achievements of hire and supply companies across the UK’s plant, tool, equipment, and event hire industry. The award ceremony took place on 22nd April at the Grosvenor House, London.

Genquip-Groundhog’s latest innovation in sustainable site welfare provisions is their iRange of mobile and static welfare units, and its environmental credentials have been endorsed by winning a Global Gold commendation in the 2023 Green Apple World awards. GenquipGroundhog topped the group in the Green Energy class. The Green World

Awards are organised by The Green Organisation, and are fundamental to The Green Organisation’s philosophy of helping others to help the environment. The International Green Apple Environment Awards were launched in 1994 and have become one of the world’s most prestigious recognition campaigns.

The Genquip-Groundhog iRange has also been recognised by one of the UK’s leading plant and equipment trade exhibitions, Plantworx 2023. The iRange has been included in the shortlist in their Innovation Awards programme in the ‘Non-Operated Plant and Support Service’ section. The 2023 awards were focussed very much on environmental solutions, sustainability, safety, and the use of smart technology.

Genquip-Groundhog has placed carbon emission reduction, lowered fuel costs, and empowered the use of renewables in the design of the iRange. These units are powered by an intelligent solar power and battery system, which means that the backup HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) Stage V-compliant generator is only running for around a third of the time when compared to a conventional welfare unit. HVO fuel is a renewable diesel alternative based on vegetable oils, grease, and similar residue. It is a drop-in diesel alternative with 90% lower net CO2 greenhouse gas emissions.

The Genquip-Groundhog partnership manufactures a wide range of sustainable accommodation units used throughout the hire, event, rail, and construction markets.

Their manufacturing facilities are based in Neath, South Wales. Continuous product development is ongoing, and bespoke models can be produced for specific requirements. They offer nationwide training, support and a dedicated spare parts department.

komatsu Ltd. (President and CEO: Hiroyuki Ogawa) has developed a concept machine for a medium-sized hydraulic excavator that combines a hydrogen fuel cell and Komatsudeveloped key components, to achieve carbon neutrality at workplaces of construction equipment.

By advancing the PoC (Proof of Concept) tests it started in May 2023, Komatsu will accelerate its efforts to embark on the commercial production of medium-sized and large construction equipment powered by hydrogen fuel cells in the near future.

In its mid-term management plan, Komatsu committed to minimising environmental impact through its business, targeting a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions from use of its products and production of its equipment by 2030 (compared to 2010 levels) and a challenge target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. To help its customers achieve carbon neutrality, Komatsu has been providing a variety of products, services, and solutions that reduce environmental impact, such as hybrid hydraulic excavators and electric mini excavators.

Komatsu is also engaged in research and development to provide products equipped with new power sources. For the new concept machine, Komatsu adopted a hydrogen fuel cell system and hydrogen tank, which were produced by Toyota Motor Corporation (Operating Officer, President: Koji Sato) (hereafter “Toyota”), on Komatsu’s medium-sized hydraulic excavator. In addition to Komatsu’s comprehensive control technology, the combination of Toyota’s hydrogen fuel cell system and Komatsu key components, Komatsu is working towards zero exhaust emissions and a significant reduction in noise and vibration, while delivering the same powerful digging performance and high operability as engine-driven excavators. Medium-sized and large construction equipment requires a power source with higher energy density than that of small construction equipment, which has led the move to electrification with batteries. Because hydrogen has a higher energy density and can be refueled in a shorter time than recharging batteries, Komatsu has been advancing its R&D efforts as a promising electrification choice for medium-sized and large models. To contribute to realizing a hydrogen society and carbon neutrality, Komatsu

will continue its efforts toward the commercial production of mediumsized and large construction machinery equipped with hydrogen fuel cells by conducting PoC tests of this new concept machine.

DANTOTSU Value is defined as customer value creation that generates a positive cycle of improvement of earnings and ESG resolutions in Komatsu’s new mid-term management plan, entitled “DANTOTSU Value –Together, to “The Next” for sustainable growth”. Through this DANTOTSU Value, Komatsu will strive to create new values in order to take steady steps forward to the next stage for the workplace of the future and pass on a sustainable future to the next generation.

the event is becoming an established fixture in the industry calendar. This year sees the introduction of the Waterways Management Show, supported by Canal & River Trust which will be co-located with Floodex and the National Drainage Show, opening up new opportunities.

The response to the 2022 event has been fantastic, with many companies rebooking their space and a big increase in new companies enquiring about exhibiting and sponsorship.

The event, which takes place on 22nd & 23rd November 2023, ties in with the NADC’s National Drainage Awards for which the National Drainage Show is the Wine Sponsor.

The Waterways Management Show, alongside the National Drainage Show offers great opportunities to those who manufacture, sell and hire plant and equipment designed for working on the land and banksides of our waterways, as well as urban drainage projects, from hedge trimmers to excavators.

Canal & River Trust Property Development

By taking an active role, the Property Development Team champions sympathetic yet contemporary waterside development, involving both residential and commercial schemes. The income they generate from this goes straight to help maintain the historic waterways, enhance local environments and reinvigorate the

canal and river network.

Today they are involved in over £11 billion of waterside regeneration projects nationwide, reinvesting the profits from these schemes to help fund the waterways for future generations.

Canal & River Trust is a major land owner with a unique portfolio of land and property throughout the UK, worth over £500 million. Their team undertake land assembly and prepare their otherwise redundant property for regeneration by progressing it through the planning process.

The National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) will be presenting either their new recommendations, or an update on what the government has done since their last report. In the 2022 report the NIC recommended stricter controls on new property developments. They said that nearly £12bn of investment in drainage infrastructure over the next thirty years will be necessary to stop thousands more homes and businesses from flooding, due to inadequate drainage. Hopefully, the new report will be available, by the time the show comes around and will make for an interesting presentation.

Canal & River Trust is one of these new partners, which given the amount of property they manage and develop, will be of interest to anyone planning, designing, installing or maintaining drainage and waste water systems.

The Water Jetting Association (WJA) is welcomed for the first time. The WJA will be supporting the show and have a presence, with a stand on the floor, near two other newcomers to the show, Amiblu and Bluelight Lining.

Some interesting partnerships have been set up recently, although only connected by the co-located events, a few do impact on the drainage side.

National Drainage Show Sits Perfectly Between two Other Events

There is a lot more to come for the National Drainage Show, which has the added bonus of being sandwiched between the Homes UK show and Futurescape, the commercial landscaping event. Both of will attract their fair share of developers, planners, contractors and local authorities, who are welcome to attend this show if they are interested.

FOR THE INDUSTRY, BY THE INDUSTRY

YOUR PARTNER

THERE’S A VAST CHANGE UNFOLDING AROUND SUSTAINABILITY THAT WILL AFFECT BUSINESSES WORLDWIDE

Across the globe, stakeholders, customers, investors and governments are insisting that businesses grow better. Driven by the mounting legislative, regulatory, and social pressure to deliver real change, companies are moving beyond qualitative corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives like charitable donations and environmental schemes, and shifting focus onto a more measurable strategy: environmental, social and governance (ESG).

Like CSR, ESG focuses in part on a company’s environmental impact. But unlike CSR, it requires businesses to set ambitious quantitative targets, measure their performance, and compare it to industry benchmarks.

Getting on board with ESG

Many UK-based businesses are aleady taking radical steps to reduce their environmental impact in response to the Government’s Net Zero Act. The good news is that while ESG and Net Zero

are separate concepts, they overlap. When companies pursue Net Zero, those initiatives can form part of a broader ESG strategy.

Net Zero encourages businesses to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as low as possible and balance the remainder by ensuring it is re-absorbed from the atmosphere. It splits emissions into scopes 1, 2, and 3. Reducing scope 1 emissions is the most common starting point. They are created directly by your business and can be minimised by reducing waste, increasing energy efficiency, and switching to cleaner fuel and renewable energy. Scope 2 emissions are those created indirectly by your business activity. For example, when the electricity your business uses is produced. Scope 3 covers the environmental impact your business is associated with but doesn’t create. These could include, for example, the impact of employees commuting, customers using your products, or when raw materials are being mined and transported.

Driving Net Zero Targets with Renewable Diesel (HVO)

HVO, or hydrotreated vegetable oil fuel, is a diesel alternative made from sustainable and renewable raw materials. HVO does the least environmental damage of all the advanced fuels available, creating up to 90% fewer GHG emissions than fossil options. As it’s almost identical to diesel, it can be used in virtually all diesel vehicles*[1] without any expensive engine modifications. This makes it a great option to significantly reduce your scope 1 emission from HGVs, construction equipment and other off-road machinery.

“Switching to HVO delivers fast and significant GHG reductions, making it an attractive option for businesses looking to improve their scope 1 emissions. The Oil Depot has distributor rights for Gd+HVO - the cleanest alternative fuel on the market which has several OEM approvals and is a drop-in replacement for diesel. It meets EN15940 standards, ASTM D975, JIS No 2 and is certified under the UK Renewable Fuel Assurance

[1] HVO meets regulatory requirements and can theoretically be used in any diesel vehicle. However, it is not yet approved for use by all vehicle manufacturers. Check your with your vehicle manufacturer first.

Scheme and has proof of sustainability from the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC).”

Balancing Residual GHGs with Carbon Offsetting

In many instances, businesses can reduce but not eliminate, their GHG emissions. For example, while HVO vastly reduces the GHG emissions created by a traditionally fuelled vehicle fleet, it isn’t yet possible to eradicate the environmental impact of any fossil fuel vehicle. But to achieve Net Zero, the remaining volume of GHG, also known as the residual volume, can be balanced with Carbon Offsetting.

Carbon Offsetting is when a business participates in or funds initiatives that compensate for the carbon dioxide emissions it cannot stamp out. Common carbon offsets include funding reforestation and renewable energy projects that reduce harmful atmospheric CO2, or increase the proportion of clean energy in the grid. These projects give

funders “carbon credits” equal to the carbon reduction directly achieved by their contribution.

In theory, Carbon Offsetting is fast and straightforward to implement. However, there are a lot of initiatives available. Some are verified by official bodies, and others aren’t. It also makes sense to direct funding towards the projects most likely to make the biggest impact, so there can be a learning curve.

The Oil Depot – supporting your ESG commitments

With consumers[2] and investors[3] now prioritising businesses that can quantifiably prove their positive environmental impact, the message is clear. Businesses must act today and get on board with meaningful ESG or risk losing opportunities to those that do.

The Oil Depot, a nationwide supplier of commercial fuels, is now supplying HVO. Working with the largest HVO importer and UK stockist, the company can supply customers with anything from 20-litre HVO boxes to bulk volumes.

And with next-day and emergency deliveries available, you can keep running day-in-day out, even when the unexpected happens.

To maximise your fleet’s scope 1 reduction, the Oil Depot also works with various verified and approved Carbon Project Developers to offer Carbon Offsetting on fuel purchases.

And, as a proud Greenarc company, The Oil Depot has access to information and support on electric vehicles (EV) and charging infrastructure, led lighting, carbon offset fuel cards, Solar PV and electrical services to reduce emissions across your business and drive your ESG impact further and faster.

finning UK & Ireland, the world’s largest dealer of Cat® machines and equipment, has last year doubled its sales of Cat GC, which provide reliability and fuel efficiency at a lower cost per hour as customers seek to balance sustainability with affordability.

George Ionescu, Product Manager at Finning, said the GC machines remain a popular option for plant hire companies looking for equipment with low fuel consumption following escalating charges and which are simple to use with a level of in-built tech features to get everyday jobs done.

He said: “We’re seeing a 50/50 split between customers opting for our standard GC models and those using the performance models with embedded technologies which are very much needed on infrastructure projects such as HS2, where the latest technology is driving safety improvements, optimising productivity, and reducing the carbon footprint.

RISE IN SALES OF CAT®

GC RANGE AS COMPANIES SEEK ECONOMICAL SOLUTIONS

“This trend is driven by sustainability and the current economic climate, together with the benefits of current technologies within the plant hire market.

“The GC models are ideal for the plant hire business and the Cat 313 GC has become one of the most popular choices in this segment because of its versatility, lack of DEF sage and exceptional fuel consumption.”

The rise in sales of Cat GC machines is set to be boosted further this year when Finning launches the medium class 22-tonne Cat 966 GC medium wheel loader into the UK market offering low operating costs, durability, and load sensing hydraulics with the same level of access to the quality after-sales support Finning has championed for decades.

He added: “At the other end of the market Caterpillar is also developing premium technologies and electric powered machines which will help reduce carbon emissions, but these are in the development stage and will hit the market in several years.

“Again, as a customer there is a balance to be struck between the cost in investment of these new technologies – as an electric machine could cost five times as much as a similar diesel powered one – and the number of hours the machine will be used and the type of jobs that these machines will be performing. With the current economic climate and market challenges, the question is which sustainable solutions are best for each of our customers and is why Caterpillar offer a broad range of products to meet these differing customer needs.”

AWARDS 2023

An entire decade has passed since the inaugural Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) Stars of the Future Awards and the ceremony has only gone from strength to strength since then. With over 1,900 members, the CPA supplies around 85% of hired plant to the construction and its allied industries.

Plant Planet is honoured to be attending this year’s awards ceremony. And, in a testament to the ceremony’s popularity, nominations for this year’s instalment almost surpassed 100 - its highest ever. Nominations are made through the employer or training provider of the trainee or apprentice, and a victory brings not only a prize, but invaluable national recognition.

The CPA Stars of the Future Awards aim to put a spotlight on some of the industry’s brightest prospects. Focusing on apprentices and trainees, some of the previous prizes have included high-quality tool kits, iPads, and all-expenses trips to manufacturing plants overseas. To mark this year’s awards, the CPA has announced two new categories - Young Plant Operative of the Year and Apprentice Mentor of the Year.

Plant Planet will also be sponsoring the College of the Year Award. Darren Shelton, Business Manager of Plant Planet, commented on the ceremony, saying: ’’We’re thrilled to take part in this year’s ceremony as well as sponsoring the College of the Year Award. To be a part of the awards is an honour.’’

The mission of the CPA Stars of the Future Awards is to both reward and acknowledge the industry’s hardworking, dedicated apprentices and trainees whose passion, skills, and talents will serve as both the bedrock and the spearhead of the construction industry in the not-too-distant future.

The Young Plant Operative and Apprentice Mentor of the Year Awards will join the long list of honours available at the ceremony. The more established awards include Plant Mechanic of the Year (Level 2), Plant Technician of the Year (Level 3), Plant Operative of the Year, Plant Installer of the Year, Lifting Technician of the Year, Hire Controller of the Year, College of the Year, Best Personal Statement and the Judges’ Special Award.

The eagerly anticipated awards ceremony will take place on Thursday 6th July 2023 at the Heart of England Conference and Events Centre in Fillongley, near Coventry. Excitement for the ceremony is building, and Plant Planet is delighted to be a part of it.

The CPA Stars of the Future Awards 2023 will be held in association with event sponsors CRJ Services, Flannery Plant Hire, GAP Group, L Lynch Plant Hire & Haulage and Sunbelt Rentals and award sponsors ACOP Group, Liebherr, M O’Brien Plant Hire, NOCN Group, Plant Planet, Southern Hoist Services, Tower Staff Construction and Wolffkran.

CHOOSING THE BEST EXCAVATOR ATTACHMENTS FOR YOU

Excavators are incredibly versatile machines that are used in a wide range of industries, including construction, mining, forestry, and agriculture. One of the most important factors in determining the effectiveness and efficiency of an excavator is the selection of the right attachments. Choosing the right excavator attachments is critical to the success of your project and can save you time and money. In this article, we will discuss some key factors to consider when selecting excavator attachments.

40 JUNE 2023 PLANT PLANET feature Choosing the Best Excavator Attachment For Your Machinery

Determine the Scope of Your Project

The first step in selecting the right excavator attachments is to determine the scope of your project. This will help you identify the specific tasks that need to be performed and the type of attachments that are required. For example, if you are working on a demolition project, you may need a hydraulic hammer or a concrete pulveriser attachment. On the other hand, if you are working on a landscaping project, you may need a grapple or a bucket attachment.

Consider the Size and Weight of Your Excavator

Another important factor to consider when selecting excavator attachments is the size and weight of your excavator. The size and weight of your machine will determine the size and weight of the attachments that you can use. For example, a smaller excavator may not be able to handle a heavy-duty attachment like demolition shears or a crusher bucket. It is important to check the specifications of your excavator to ensure that the attachments you choose are compatible.

JUNE 2023 41 PLANT PLANET Choosing the Best Excavator Attachment For Your Machinery feature

Look for Versatility

One of the best ways to get the most out of your excavator is to choose attachments that are versatile. This means selecting attachments that can perform multiple tasks, such as a bucket that can be used for digging, grading, and carrying materials. Versatile attachments can help you save time and money by eliminating the need to switch out attachments for different tasks.

Evaluate the Durability of the Attachments

The durability of the attachments is an important consideration, especially if you will be using the attachments in rugged or challenging environments. Look for attachments that are made from highquality materials and have been designed to withstand the rigors of heavy use. You should also consider the warranty and service options provided by the manufacturer.

Consider Your Budget

Excavator attachments can be expensive, so it is important to consider your budget when selecting the right attachments for your machine. Look for attachments that offer the best value for money, considering the durability, versatility, and compatibility with your excavator. It is also worth considering whether renting attachments may be a more cost-effective option for your project.

Think About the Type of Material You Will Be Working with

The type of material you will be working with is another important factor to consider when selecting excavator attachments. Different materials require different attachments, such as rock buckets for mining operations or mulching heads for forestry work. It is important to choose attachments that have been designed specifically for the material you will be working with to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness.

Consider Safety Features

Safety should always be a top priority when working with heavy machinery like excavators. Look for attachments that have been designed with safety features, such as quick couplers that allow for easy attachment and detachment of the attachments. Other safety features to consider include backup alarms, anti-drop valves, and guards to prevent debris from flying out during operation.

IN CONCLUSION, SELECTING THE RIGHT EXCAVATOR ATTACHMENTS IS CRITICAL TO THE SUCCESS OF YOUR PROJECT. BY CONSIDERING FACTORS SUCH AS THE SCOPE OF YOUR PROJECT, THE SIZE AND WEIGHT OF YOUR EXCAVATOR, VERSATILITY, DURABILITY, BUDGET, MATERIAL, AND SAFETY FEATURES, YOU CAN CHOOSE ATTACHMENTS THAT WILL HELP YOU GET THE JOB DONE QUICKLY, SAFELY, AND EFFICIENTLY. REMEMBER TO ALWAYS CONSULT WITH EXPERTS IN THE INDUSTRY TO ENSURE THAT YOU MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR YOUR SPECIFIC NEEDS.

PROLEC BEGAN LIFE ON A INNOVATION AND HAS NEVER

60 JUNE 2023 PLANT PLANET feature prolec

A WAVE OF NEVER STOPPED!

WITH 40 YEARS’ EXPERIENCE SUPPLYING MACHINE PRODUCTIVITY AND SAFETY SYSTEMS FOR CONSTRUCTION, AND A HERITAGE OF TRUST AND EXCELLENCE, PROLEC HAS SET THE BENCHMARK FOR COMPLIANT, SMART SAFETY ENGINEERING SOLUTIONS.

JUNE 2023 61 PLANT PLANET prolec feature

When people want an excavator or plant safety system, they often ask for “a Prolec” – much like how people ask for “a Hoover” when they go shopping for a new vacuum cleaner.

This is why if you install systems on excavators or other plant equipment and you would like an easy way to potentially earn thousands of pounds worth of business this will be the most important message you ever read.

Here’s the deal: We would like to offer you the opportunity to become an approved distributor of our fully Network-RailApproved safety systems. However, this is a big decision, and the onus is on us to prove to you why it’s a good move.

Prolec PME is built around three principles, giving the machine the right level of compliance for the site, being easy to fit, and not getting in the operator’s way at any time, whether it’s in use or not.

Compliance: If there are overhead wires on the site, there is a Prolec for the job; if the machine is doing lifting operations, there is a Prolec for that job too; if the site is beside a busy road, there is a Prolec for that. Or, all three at once. Working on HS2, on Network Rail land? Yes, Prolec has the right level of compliance, having Product Approval and a data logger fitted as standard to

Easy to fit: Everything is shipped in the box and included in the price, including all the cables and fittings, system diagrams, installation and calibration guides. We offer a full training programme and premium customer support to our distributors.

You don’t know it’s there: Prolec proportional valves let the operator work right up to hazardous areas without premature intervention. And, when not in use, the machine can still be used even if the Prolec has been mechanically damaged.

As a distributor, we can offer you the chance to make your margin on equipment sales, provide local support and own the relationship with the end customer.

WORKING ON RAIL?

Europe’s railways are amongst the safest in the world and we at Prolec have an uncompromising approach to safety. Working closely with the European Railway Agency to develop common approaches to safety in order to maintain high standards and harmonise safety requirements. Prolec have the right safety system to suit your needs.

Delivering intuitive hazard mitigation for your on-track and off-track operations. PME Rail combines RCL (Rated Capacity Limiter), height and slew technology to protect your operators, assets and the passing public.

Safeguarding Rail Operations with Movement

Limiting Devices: Prolec were approached by Rail Freight Services (a major material handling logistics company) to customise and deliver a “virtual wall” movement limiting solution for the UK’s first Terex Fuchs RHL 360F material handlers. Machines now in active service providing productive and safe work near to open railway lines and under high-voltage cables, unloading material for UK HS2 at a Tarmac site – taking the correct steps to work ‘simply safer’.

THE FUTURE OF CONSTRUCTION LIES IN AUTOMATION

We’re doing everything we can to leverage its power to build a simpler, safer construction ecosystem. We’re exploring a range of concepts, from integrating GPS into our systems to leveraging augmented reality technology to enable operators to better identify hazards and machines and respond to them more quickly.

Research and development are vital because safety and productivity are linked. It’s like walking along a tightrope – you’d have the confidence to move a lot faster if there was a safety net underneath. Therefore, in a market under pressure to respond to environmental targets, innovations in safety technologies are the key to a futureproof construction services business.

Finally, when you choose a Prolec Safety System, you really are in a safe pair of hands. This is something we can say with confidence having developed construction safety systems for over 40 years that have protected thousands upon thousands of excavators and plant machines. So whether you’re looking for anything from a simple height limiter to a comprehensive all-in-one system, you can trust us to deliver an effective, reliable safety system to meet your needs.

JUNE 2023 65 PLANT PLANET prolec feature
Prolec PME505 RCI with proportionally controlled height and slew limiting technologies.

If you lease your machines, they reduce the likelihood of one or more of your machines being taken out of commission by an accident. Plus, the productivity gains and ability to access major construction projects represent an attractive value proposition for potential customers.

If you own your machines, you’ll enjoy all the above and your profits will be protected by mitigating the risk of costly collisions and other incidents.

You might also be interested to learn that every single one of our systems is easy to install “out of the box” so you won’t be kept waiting for weeks and weeks before you can use your machines. And, as we manufacture our equipment we’re

immune to many of the supply chain challenges facing the construction industry right now. Therefore, you can order from us knowing you’ll get your safety systems in a timely manner in all but exceptional circumstances.

All our systems use powerful technology to maximise the productivity of your machines by allowing your operators to work efficiently around hazards. In other words, they’ll be able to do the same work in less time because your operators won’t have to worry about triggering an emergency stop and slamming to a halt. We call this a “fully proportional” control system and, in addition to making your machines more efficient, its far more sympathetic because it results in less wear and tear.

IT’S NOT JUST SAFETY…

One of the simplest ways to reduce the cost of an earthmoving, dredging, or marine construction project is to get everything right first time.

All that said, if you recognise any of these problems, then we want you to know they’re not your fault.

Because, without the right equipment, getting cut and fill projects right the very first time is all but impossible because your operator has to rely on feel to remove or replace the right amount of earth. Experienced operators can do this, but even the best operator will make mistakes, and every mistake comes with burdensome costs you’d rather do without.

That’s why we’ve created a range of excavator guidance systems.

Yet despite this being common knowledge, how many times have you had to arrange repeated surveys and grade checking then wait as your operators complete reworks? These have an up-front cost that eats into your margins and an enormous opportunity cost that could seriously disrupt your cashflow (if your machines are stuck on one site, you can’t deploy them to the next project).

For starters, the combination of a highly accurate display and powerful GPS integration gives operators the information they need to move at pace without compromising the accuracy of their work. This means, with a Prolec Guidance System on board, projects get completed in a fraction of the time.

But that’s not all – our systems will even help you get paid faster too.

Here’s how: Prolec Guidance Systems, very different to the PME, log of all work completed in forensic detail. All you need to do is download the log (the data compatible with multiple file formats for ease of conversion and export) and present it as evidence to your client to secure prompt payment for a job well done.

JUNE 2023 67 PLANT PLANET prolec feature
The PME700 range solution for the highreach demolition market.

Primarily, our guidance systems are used to dredge sea and river beds, but they can also be used to assist in the building of breakwaters and rock armour above and below the waterline. Here, the features of our systems combine to allow operators to capitalise on low-tide conditions to increase the speed and precision of marine construction projects and, of course, give you the evidence you need to get paid on time via the detailed and easy to download data log.

And if you’re not involved in marine construction or dredging? We’ve got a guidance system that’s purpose-built to deliver the same remarkable gains in productivity and cost reduction on civils projects and more.

We’ll seamlessly integrate our systems with yours to give you access to the very best safety and productivity information. Our technologies have applications in all manner of plant equipment, and they could be the winning edge you need to deliver a truly revolutionary product to the market.

THE NEW AVANT 645I AND 650I MODELS ARE THE MOST POWERFUL COMPACT LOADERS IN THEIR POWER CLASS ON THE MARKET. THEY’RE EQUIPPED WITH A DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER, SUBSEQUENTLY MEETING THE EU’S FAMOUSLY STRICT STAGE V EMISSION REGULATIONS, AS WELL AS AMERICA’S TIER 4 FINAL REGULATIONS. THE MACHINES SHOWCASE THEIR EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY IN CONGESTED, HIGH-PRESSURE WORKPLACES AND SITUATIONS WHERE SPACE IS SPARSE.

THOSE WHO ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE OLDER MODELS’ SPECIFICATIONS WILL FIND THE 600 SERIES COMFORTABLE AND FAMILIAR, WITH THE SAME LIFTING POWER BEING RETAINED, HOWEVER A BRAND-NEW ENGINE HAS BEEN INTRODUCED.

JUNE 2023 81 PLANT PLANET avant tecno company profile

The 33 kW / 44 hp diesel engine courtesy of Kubota possesses an abundance of power and torque, something that’s key for work which requires a high pulling force or is speed intensive.

Olli Hankamäki, the individual responsible for the redesign, says: ‘’We are very satisfied with the new loaders. The greatest thing is that we packed the power of the 700 series into the frame of the 600 series. Now there is plenty of power in a very compact machine, so you can drive big snow blowers and crushers without any problems. No other manufacturer offers this much power in such a small package.’’

The Avant 645i shines in cramped and limited workspaces, whilst the two-speed 650i is more apt for those working in a much wider area at higher driving speeds.

82 JUNE 2023 PLANT PLANET company profile avant tecno

Mission Requirements Inspire Redesign

The genesis of the new models was the European Union’s demanding Stage V emission standard. Currently, the EU Stage V emission standard for diesel engines installed in non-road mobile machinery requires both a catalytic converter and, for engines above 19 kW, a particulate filter.

“When the emissions regulation came into effect in 2019, it forced us to reduce the power in the 600 series, which was reflected in the performance of the machines,” stated design engineer Juho Jokelainen.

“But now, thanks to the new engine, the power of these models matched the power of the 745 and 750 models. The new loaders comply with both European Stage V and US Tier 4 Final emission standards,” he went on to add.

Both the 645i and the two-speed 650i are equipped with a Kubota V1505CRT diesel engine. In addition, the 4-cylinder turbocharged common rail engine is equipped with an oxidation catalyst and a particulate filter, which both look after the exhaust aftertreatment. Additives such as AdBlue are not required.

Modern passenger car engines are on-par with loaders equipped with filters in terms of particulate emissions, and one thing that’ll become apparent to Avant drivers will be the substantially cleaner working environment. Issues such as smoke or odours will become things of the past.

The efficiency of the engines means that using them at full power is mostly unnecessary under most circumstances. Fuel consumption, a huge issue in today’s economy, is minimal in comparison with large work machines.

The reduction in fuel consumption is largely thanks to the modern engine control. In addition, the engine reacts faster to both drivers’ requests and load variations, making the machines much smoother to operate.

84 JUNE 2023 PLANT PLANET company profile avant tecno

Efficient, Clean, And Quiet

The maximum oil flow of the auxiliary hydraulics is 751/ min, which is highly unique to a loader of this size class. The lack of noise from the engines is due to its capability of use at low revs, whilst the new loaders can run almost any of Avant’s hydraulically driven attachments at maximum speed.

‘’We have been able to reduce the noise level in this size class lower than ever’’, says Olli Hankamäki.

The sound power level was officially measured at LWA 98 dB (A) when the machine was taken to full speed. In the driver’s seat, the sound pressure level was 83 Db (Lpa).

‘’These loaders are the quietest Avants right after the fully electric e-series machines’’, says Olli.

Unmatched Comfort

Standard on the new machines is an open ROPS/FOPScertified cab. Users also have the option of the L-cab and Avant’s latest GT cab, bringing a level of comfort to this size class not often seen. Drivers also have very good levels of sound and vibration, making a drive a pleasant experience. The cab’s heating, comfortable ergonomics, and large windows are other noteworthy bonuses, and the availability of air conditioning is a literal breath of fresh air.

‘’On the seat of the GT cab, you feel like you’re driving a bigger machine, even though you have a very agile loader underneath you, which can also fit into places that you couldn’t reach with big machines’’, said Olli Hankamäki.

JUNE 2023 85 PLANT PLANET avant tecno company profile

More Data

Those familiar with the interface and display of Avant’s 700 and 800 series loaders will feel at home in their new ones. The display truly helps to operate the loader efficiently.

“The user gets even more information about the state of the machine. In the event of maintenance, the machine tells you that now is the time for maintenance, or regeneration of the particulate filter, etc. The system also shows guidance for other maintenance topics, or error codes and warning to the user in a similar way to the latest car models,’’ says Juho Jokelainen.

SIMON TOMBLIN: 20 YEARS SINCE ROCKET LAUNCH s

imon Tomblin is waiting patiently for our meeting to commence. Meanwhile, technology (my technology I should add) decides it wants to be techy, and when we finally connect, Simon is sat calmly at his desk without any hint of frustration. The phrase you ‘can fly to the moon’ (but you can’t get a decent internet connection) is springing to mind, which brings a smile to my face, as I realise, I am interviewing the original Rocket man; the Founder and Managing Director of Rocket Rentals!

It is 20 years since Rocket Rentals was launched. It’s a great name, so I ask about the inspiration behind it.

Simon reflects: “Plans were in place to start the new business, but I was struggling to come up with a company name. I wanted a memorable business name, nothing dull! I was with my mother and stepfather; we were stuck at an airport, on our way back from Bauma in 2001. There were a few of us, floating all sorts of weird and wonderful suggestions. It was my mother, who in the end, said, “well, what you do isn’t rocket science”.

The penny instantly dropped. Cue Rocket Rentals!”

So, Rocket Rentals Ltd was formed in Gloucester and I’m amused to learn that the business address is no other than, Area 51 named after Nevada’s mysterious “Extra-terrestrial Highway” linked to all sorts of conspiracy theories. (Very quickly, I realise that Simon has a real sense of humour!)

“It was a bit of fun really. What better address for Rocket Rentals to have than Area 51? Mind you, it took a lot of persuading the Post Office to register the address. You’d be amazed what hoops we had to jump through, especially as we have now taken it to our new premises,” laughs Simon.

Simon explains how the business started out in a modest way, but has grown so much over the years. Despite growth, it remains a familyowned business providing plant, access and tool hire services to customers in Gloucestershire, Bristol, Oxford and Swindon. Rocket Rentals moved to new premises about 7 years ago, and in recent years, opened separate premises dedicated to tool hire on a nearby industrial estate. It’s become a respected and well-known business in the area, with many loyal

It’s been 20 years since Rocket Rentals launched into the plant hire industry. Rachel Lambert talks to its Founder & Managing Director, Simon Tomblin, to find out more about The Man, The Business and Area 51!
JUNE 2023 89 PLANT PLANET rocket rentals interview
“WE’RE A CLOSE KNIT TEAM WHO CARES, AND GENUINELY LOVES WHAT WE DO, AND THAT DEDICATION SHINES THROUGH TO OUR CUSTOMERS.”

customers who have been with Rocket Rentals from the outset.

“These longstanding customers have become friends. As a smaller business in the industry, we’re more like a big family, and our customers have become an extension of our family. We’re a closeknit team who cares, and genuinely loves what we do, and that dedication shines through to our customers.”

It’s clear to see that Simon is “110% committed” to the company he has created. I’m curious to know how he first got into the construction industry, and where the impetus came from to start Rocket Rentals.

“I was practically born into this industry. My father, Ken Tomblin, has a plant hire business, Bison Plant Hire, and I remember going out with him as a child, and climbing onto machines at any opportunity. I instinctively knew I was destined to follow this path. After leaving school and travelling, I came back at the age of 18 in need of money, and went to work for my stepfather, David Meek, initially on his farm. When rain stopped play, David would take me off the farm and get me on a machine, and I got to know all the other drivers. The rest snowballed from there.”

Simon found himself getting more involved with David Meek Plant Hire, which at the time had about 100 operators, along with self-drive equipment. It was only when a member of staff went on maternity leave in the early 1990’s, that Simon was given the opportunity to work in the office, helping out on the hire desk. Personnel moved around, and Simon took over the role of Plant Manager, originally to provide cover in a temporary capacity. He was only 19.

“It wasn’t supposed to be permanent, but I was young and hungry for success. I ended up proving that I could take on the responsibility on a permanent basis. I learnt so much about the industry, and what it was like to work for a larger company. Access equipment was the main focus, and I think there were about 500 machines on the plant side then. David Meek had a contracting division at that time. We were going through a transition of reducing dozers and scrapers, to create a larger self-drive fleet, so we were turning the ‘big metal’ into smaller equipment and making it stand on its own two feet.”

After 9 years, that business was sold. Simon then went on to become a director and shareholder of Plantforce Rentals up until 2002. That was when he had the urge to start a venture of his own.

“I felt the time was right. I’d gained wide-ranging experience; from my father’s company to a large organisation

when I worked for David Meek, and then to Plantforce, which was a smaller business.”

And, so Rocket Rentals was launched and Simon’s dream took off.

“When I set up Rocket, I had a clear direction in my mind. My priorities were to invest in state-of-the-art machinery and give customers great customer service, to build a respected brand.”

“David (Meek) helped me get the business up and running. I couldn’t have done it without him; his knowledge and guidance steered me in the right direction. He has been in the industry a long time and it was great to have his wisdom. I don’t think there was anyone finer at buying equipment than David Meek,” says Simon adding, “I hope I learnt something from him!”

The early days of Rocket Rentals proved quite an adventure. Simon explains how it started in a small way. The first purchase was for 8 JCB telehandlers for hire to David Wilson Homes, with more machinery and equipment added from there, including zero tail swing machines from Kobelco, which Simon considered to be “light years ahead in that market.”

“I set out do things properly with high-calibre equipment. The aim has always been to be flexible; to be reliable and make the customer’s life easier, and that’s how the business is run today. So, we made sure that blades were offered with every excavator, a complete set of buckets were available, trackers were fitted for security; and that everything was top-spec, and all the covering paperwork was in order. We have taken that stance ever since.”

He adds: “Selecting the right equipment for the hire fleet was easy; the hardest aspect was turning it around quickly because it was good kit and we used to thrive on high utilisation. From day one, we sent everything out valeted, and took great pride in our presentation. It made Rocket Rentals stand out, and we adopt the same attention to detail today.”

Simon recalls those early days with real fondness, saying that they “were great fun”. He started off with a 7.5t lorry and he would make deliveries during the day and come back in the evening to do the admin.

“We tried using third-party transport, but this took control out of our hands, hindering our ability to be flexible too. I decided we needed to be in control of our own destiny. So, in addition to the 7.5t lorry I used to drive, we bought a 32t rigid truck with beavertail. Today, we have 8 trucks in our fleet. Although we don’t make money out of transport, it gives us

“MY PRIORITIES WERE TO INVEST IN STATE-OFTHE-ART MACHINERY AND GIVE CUSTOMERS GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE, TO BUILD A RESPECTED BRAND.”

complete control of our deliveries and collections. This is so important given our focus on service, and when you leave it someone else, that isn’t always conveyed to our customers. I say to our drivers, and engineers, that ‘you’re my ambassadors’ because they meet customers more than I do.”

Knowing how important service was (and still is) Rocket Rentals’ first employee was an engineer. Gradually more engineers were recruited, as the company grew. And grow, it certainly has!

Rocket Rentals moved to purposebuilt premises at its current location in Slimbridge, Gloucestershire in December 2017. It had taken a year to get planning permission and six months to build. It was a project that Simon thoroughly enjoyed being involved in. He made it his policy to use locally based suppliers to support the local economy, while also making the building as eco-friendly as possible. PV panels on the roof, harvesting of rainwater, repurposing packaging are just some ‘green initiatives’ deployed by Rocket Rentals.

“I feel strongly about ‘buying local’ and we’ve always had a conscience about sustainability and recycling. It’s not always possible, but we like to do it where and when we can. When we were building Rocket HQ, I think the furthest supplier came from the Forest of Dean for electric gates and fencing. Otherwise, all our suppliers were virtually on our doorstep.”

The same philosophy applies to employees, with Simon saying that all the team live within about a 5-to-10mile radius. It is clear that he is a real supporter of local communities, and the local economy which makes it easy to understand why Rocket Rentals has become such a prominent business in Gloucestershire.

More recently, Rocket Rentals expanded further, and opened a dedicated facility for the tool hire side of the business. It’s on a local industrial estate about 200m away from Rocket HQ.

“The timing could have been better, I must say. We opened our new Tool Hire facility in February 2020 and were in the process of telling everyone all about it, when the pandemic struck and soon after, Boris delivered the dreaded news that we must all ‘stay at home’. These were uncharted waters. With a recession, you can normally see it coming and prepare, but the pandemic was entirely different.”

Taking heed of the Government’s announcement, Rocket Rentals closed

the Tool Hire business for the first two weeks of lockdown, following the lead of builders’ merchants. Everyone at Head Office (except for Simon and one lorry driver) went on furlough.

“It was a real challenge. You can’t work from home in our industry, and we had a relatively new team working in Tool Hire. We followed the guidance, and worked until the end of March which gave us time to get all the machinery PDI’d, so we had everything in the yard available for hire. It meant when we started hiring out again in April and May, when sites began to gradually reopen, we were all set to go again. I am pleased to say we were well-prepared.”

Rocket Rentals carried on trading during these months, and by June/July 2020 gradually gained some normality, despite some ongoing challenges. Simon made sure he spoke with each employee who had been furloughed every Friday, to stay in touch and see how they were coping.

“It was such a strange time during which, like all businesses, we had to adjust to, very often dealing with matters on a day-by-day basis. Managing the outgoings on finance was certainly a challenge, especially when it was so difficult to get hold of finance companies at that time. This made decisions around planning ahead and deciding whether to take payment holidays incredibly difficult. That said, I must say, JCB Finance stood out and were fantastic throughout.”

We talk about how Covid has influenced buying habits, and how people’s expectations have changed with more consumers now making, and even relying on, online purchases. Simon believes the pandemic, amplified by the cost-of-living crisis, high inflation and economic uncertainty, has impacted on customer behaviour.

“We’re finding that hire periods for machines are often much shorter, with more one or two-day hires, so machines are in and out all the time. It means that we’re working harder than ever before, requiring swift turnarounds to get the machines prepared and ready to go back on site again. Managing people’s expectations can be hard, but we are good communicators and maintain regular contact with our customers. We may be working harder than ever before, which is common in many different sectors, but I still find plant and tool hire a great industry to be in.”

We talk about the changes that low and zero-emission equipment is bringing to the industry. I ask him what investment Rocket Rentals has made in eco-friendly plant and equipment.

JUNE 2023 91 PLANT PLANET rocket rentals interview
“I FEEL STRONGLY ABOUT ‘BUYING LOCAL’ AND WE’VE ALWAYS HAD A CONSCIENCE ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY AND RECYCLING. ”

“We’re at Stage V across the board now, and trucks are Euro 6 because we operate in Ultra-Low Emission Zones with Bath and Bristol on our doorstep. We’ve had to get ahead because of the areas we work in. We’ve got our own charging facilities here, and we recently bought our first zero-emission electric miniexcavator, a Bobcat E10 micro. We’re hoping to add more. The electric micro machines are an ideal solution for indoor use, for underpinning or reduced floor digs, because you don’t have any fumes to deal with. I do query why manufacturers have focused on electric 1.5t machines – they don’t fit through doorways, so I wish more had gone down the micro-machine route. It would really accelerate ‘electric progress’ in the hire industry.”

Rocket Rentals has also invested in JCB electric tracked dumpers, which Simon says are working really well along with the micro and look “very promising”.

“I think electric is best suited to machines up to 2.5t. I’m still unsure about electric compaction though, especially the double-drum ride-on rollers so the jury’s out on that one. We’re having a lot of conversations with customers about ‘electric’ battery powered machinery, but I feel the charging infrastructure is still holding us back, especially in our area. We’re not city based, and our customers may have the desire to ‘go electric’ but just don’t have the power options.”

He adds: “We’ve recently taken delivery of some hybrid machines, so these are probably the best steppingstone towards electric vehicles. Of course, electric access equipment has been around for a long time, but that works differently. There’s much talk about electric, but I’m looking forward to seeing how hydrogen powered machines work. It will be interesting to see JCB’s hydrogen powered generator, which makes complete sense in my mind. I think it could be transformational to generator power.”

Simon believes that financial challenges are still ahead, such as the rising cost of equipment and energy costs, which all need to be justified, emphasising that “getting those hire rates up is a real struggle.” (Simon doesn’t dwell on this, and seems fairly resigned to the fact, but from talking to people in plant hire, I am starting to build a picture of how challenging this is to the entire sector, especially for the smaller privately owned plant hire companies.)

“There are quite a few companies selling up now, with a lot of people feeling they’ve done their time in the industry. I’m lucky to have age on my side and I still love doing, what I do. I enjoy it so much; it doesn’t feel like coming to work so I feel very fortunate.”

It is evident that people are very important to Rocket Rentals, from the people who work there to the community they live, and of course, the customers. Simon is a real ‘people’s person’ who is passionate about the industry, and enjoys nothing more than to meet up with, or chat to the people involved it. He says he is always accessible to his customers, and his phone is never far from his side, going on to say, that he doesn’t like relying on emails.

“Emails can be too impersonal. I believe it’s important to talk to people. This is an industry that is all about relationships.”

Simon is always in the hire office, saying how much he “gets a buzz from it on a daily basis.”

92 JUNE 2023 PLANT PLANET interview rocket rentals

“THERE ARE QUITE A FEW COMPANIES SELLING UP NOW, WITH A LOT OF PEOPLE FEELING THEY’VE DONE THEIR TIME IN THE INDUSTRY. I’M LUCKY TO HAVE AGE ON MY SIDE AND I STILL LOVE DOING, WHAT I DO. I ENJOY IT SO MUCH; IT DOESN’T FEEL LIKE COMING TO WORK SO I FEEL VERY FORTUNATE.”

JUNE 2023 93 PLANT PLANET rocket rentals interview

We talk about the team at Rocket Rentals who are so vital to the business. Simon is full of praise for them.

“The team is so important, and we really look after each other here, in and out of work. I want people to come to work with a smile on their face and go home with a smile too. I often say that I spend more time in the office with them than I do with my own family. We all muck-in and we all talk to each other. Mental health is such a big issue for this industry, and we take that seriously too.”

He adds: “We’re masters of juggling and as a team, we make it happen for our customers, which is rewarding for us all; you can feel the buzz. It’s impossible to plan your day here, but we know we can be flexible with the ability to pivot quickly should we need to. We don’t have to go to Board meetings to make decisions, we just do it there and then, which is why many customers prefer dealing with smaller companies.”

Apparently, the Rocket Rentals team celebrate all sorts of occasions, and enjoy fish and chips together on the last Friday of each month.

I can’t help but smile when I hear Simon talk about this team. If you go on to the Meet the Team section on the Rocket Rentals website, you will learn some interesting facts. For example, Mel on the Hire Desk plays rugby for Dursley Ladies and is a level one qualified skydiver; Jim, the Service Engineer would like to travel the world in a motorhome; Steve, an HGV driver, enjoys going to ballroom dancing classes. There’s many more … And apparently Simon, aspires to have a micro-brewery one day, and

has already starting dabbling!

“I’d like to launch some Rocket beer one day. We did go to a brewery to have some produced – they were called ‘It’s Not Rocket Science’, but I’d love to brew some of our own. Maybe one day!”

So, what does the future hold for Rocket Rentals?

“I think we stay on the same trajectory, that we have traditionally followed, while always being progressive and having our eyes open to new innovations in machinery. We are passionate about our industry and making a difference. We get involved with all sorts of forums, working with organisations such as the CPA, HSE and CECA to make working on site safer; with better welfare on site.”

Simon ‘lives and breathes the industry’, that’s for sure, and as we are nearing the end of our meeting, he reiterates the importance he places on business reputation.

“We truly care about our reputation. It’s everything to us here at Rocket Rentals. We don’t have salespeople on the road; most of our business stems from word of mouth. So, it doesn’t matter whether you’re a sole trader or a national contractor, you’ll get the same level of service from us.”

Simon is evidently so proud of Rocket Rentals, its people and all that the company has achieved, but far from complacent. Talking to him, he comes across as modest and down to earth, with a very friendly persona that makes you feel at ease. And we all know that personality goes a long way in the construction plant and equipment industry!

In 2019, after invaluable input from HS2, the Energy Savings Trust and some London boroughs, the CEA and Datatag ID announced the launch of CESAR ECV which visually displays a machine’s engine emission standard, taken from the EU Type Approval number.

CESAR ECV combines with the technology behind the main CESAR scheme adding a colour-coded plate showing engine emission stage from two through to five and now includes electric and, coming soon hydrogen. The information about the machine is collated on a comprehensive, secure database accessible through the ECV clearing portal and this enables

plant owners and operators, contractors and site managers to comply with any local policy or contractual obligation regarding machinery emissions levels.

The mix of a secure database of machines’ vital information plus an easy to read and scan visual sticker cuts out a lot of work for construction site managers and local authorities providing a quick and easy reference. CESAR EV is invaluable on sites where companies are required to comply with Non-Road Mobile Machinery (NRMM) emission regulations.

JCB and Hitachi were among the first to adopt CESAR ECV and following their lead to date the scheme has been taken up by approximately 90% of OEMs and leading machine dealers in the construction sector.

DATATAG VENOM

Through its work with the Official CESAR Scheme, Datatag recognised a major issue costing the industry millions of pounds every year. That of fuel theft. So, with its history of forensic DNA identification marking, Datatag set about developing a smart technology-based solution to the problem. The result was Datatag VENOM.

VENOM is a unique forensic DNA marker carried in a visible green dye which can be supplied to give a company an unique DNA identifier for their fuels. It has been tested to EN590 by SGS in Germany providing the necessary qualification to prove that any dye or additive added does not change the base fuel’s performance in any way, especially its octane or cetane rating. This is critical as it proves that VENOM will not damage any part of the fuel system, affect the emissions and importantly not affect the machine performance in any way.

VENOM is simply a formulation of dyes and forensic DNA which contains no surfactants or heavy metals. It removes nothing and leaves nothing.

The VENOM vivid green colour is its first security feature and will visibly announce its presence if and when it is extracted from a machine. This alone makes VENOM a powerful theft deterrent as this colour is almost impossible to remove from fuel once applied. The dye used is the same as dyes commonly found around the world in rebated diesel, used for years with no detrimental effects. They are similar to the dye previously used in rebated red diesel. Datatag are aware that some European countries still operate rebated fuel with our closest neighbours the French choosing to use a blue dye and Ireland green. And whilst there isn’t an issue to add additives into tax paid fuel, including white diesel, there are regular ongoing discussions and tests planned with government bodies etc following HMRC’s decision to stop construction machinery running on red diesel.

VENOM is dosed at a level of just 50 parts per million (ppm) meaning a single litre of VENOM will protect 20,000 litres of fuel! If a full tank of fuel was treated with VENOM and that tank then half emptied and subsequently refilled with untreated fuel, VENOM’s distinctive colour would still be visible and the unique forensic DNA still detectable. Datatag say that ideally vehicles would be filled from a bowser where the fuel is kept at the required dosage rate constantly. However, VENOM can be detected in fuel at dose rates far below this which means that if stolen fuel were mixed with genuine fuel the presence of VENOM, even if not visible to the naked eye, could still be detected and a prosecution sought.

The unique VENOM DNA code can be linked specifically to an individual, a company or a site or fuel location or even a machine and anyone taking treated fuel will be well aware it is marked with VENOM.

DATATAG will support clients with highly visual, impactful warning signage for site fences, company notice boards, bowsers and vehicles that announce the presence of VENOM and provide a secondary line of deterrent.

VENOM is supplied in one litre metal containers and you might imagine that this level of technology would be expensive to implement but Datatag have kept the costs for VENOM down to mere pennies per litre protected. An early adopter of Datatag VENOM is construction giant CLANCY who are currently trialling VENOM at a number of sites across the country. Early indications are that it is already having an impact in reducing fuel theft.

As far as Datatag are aware VENOM is the only commercially available forensically marked fuel dye on the market in the UK at this present time offering a level of fuel security and traceability not seen before.

KIST

At Plantworx this year Datatag will also be showcasing KIST, their new asset management solution born from a challenge to them by the industry, hirers, utility and infrastructure companies to help combat the problem of tool theft. The challenge being to develop an asset management tool and software programme that is multi-platform and which would work with data flows from manufacturers, hirers, insurers etc. A software “unicorn” if you will.

After almost three years of development, Datatag proudly announce their solution - KIST. A platform designed by the industry for the industry much, in the same way, that the original CESAR Scheme was designed by the Police for the Police. Developed using the existing MicroCESAR system as a key equipment identifier, KIST allows companies to keep track of and manage vital equipment and vehicles through easy-to-use mobile and desktop applications and has been shortlisted for Plantworx Innovation Award at this years event.

KIST, using a web-based administration portal, has been designed to allow assets to be easily created, managed and administered using existing phone/tablet technology to scan QR codes and or unique identification numbers. As each asset is created it can be allocated to a user or parent asset i.e. a tool to a storage location or a vehicle) and each asset’s unique CESAR identifier can be used to create an audit trail of movement and allocations enabling company managers to track and manage an asset’s entire lifecycle from initial purchase and allocation to periodic maintenance and finally to phase-out from inventory.

The administration portal provides a standard (albeit configurable) set of reports providing tracking and visibility of assets and also provides invaluable exception data where scanned or audited assets can be identified when they are offschedule. This visibility of an asset gives greater transparency leading to increased accuracy and accountability across a fleet of assets.

JUNE 2023 99 PLANT PLANET datatag company profile

A recent report, using data compiled from insurers Direct Line, was quoted as saying;

“Since the easing of lockdown in April 2021, more than £46 million worth of tools have been stolen from vans with more than a third of thefts coming from London alone.”

This is equivalent to an almost eyewatering quarter of a million pounds worth of tools being stolen every day, with only 1% of stolen tools being recovered and doesn’t take into consideration the costs associated with loss of work time suffered as a result, often by small businesses struggling to get back on their feet after the pandemic.

KIST’s mobile application allows authorised users to conduct audits of assets allowing the recording of the asset’s status in real time. This gives them the ability to manage preventive maintenance schedules and routine inspections thereby preventing expensive repairs and security risks from poorly maintained equipment.

The application also includes pre-drive vehicle checks with email alerts to supervisors on reported damage or driver concerns. Mileage and vehicle safety checks can be easily reported, monitored, and audited along with service history, safety certificates, links to user/operator videos, map location screens including What3Words, the uploading of photos and the issuing of a “Temporary Tag” for hired in equipment.

No asset management solution currently is a “one size fits all” but KIST by Datatag is aiming to achieve this. The configurable tool allows managers, supervisors, and teams to locate, manage and control assets to increase efficiency, reduce waiting times and also waste. KIST is already making a huge difference in how companies manage assets including plant equipment, tools, vehicles, maintenance and teams. It will no doubt become an industry game changer as more companies adopt it and the industry starts to benefit from something at Datatag we call “crowd policing” where users and companies, working together, reduce theft and increase recoveries.

SMART ATTACHMENTS

smart attachments are becoming increasingly popular in the construction industry, as they offer a range of benefits that can improve the efficiency, safety, and accuracy of construction operations. Smart attachments refer to devices that can be attached to construction machinery, such as excavators, bulldozers, and cranes, to enhance their capabilities and make them smarter. In this article, we will explore the benefits and applications of smart attachments in construction.

One of the main benefits of smart attachments in construction is that they can increase the efficiency and productivity of construction operations. For example, a smart bucket attachment for an excavator can automatically adjust the angle and position of the bucket based on the material being excavated. This can significantly reduce the time and effort required to excavate materials, leading to increased productivity and reduced costs. Similarly, smart attachments for cranes can improve the accuracy and speed of lifting operations, making them more efficient and crucially, safer.

Smart attachments in construction can play a major role in enhancing the safety of construction operations. For example, a smart attachment for a bulldozer can detect obstacles and automatically adjust the speed and direction of the machine to avoid collisions. This can prevent accidents and injuries and reduce the risk of damage to the machine and surrounding infrastructure. Similarly, smart attachments for cranes can provide real-time monitoring of load weight and stability, helping operators to avoid overloading and tipping accidents.

Smart attachments in construction can also improve the accuracy and precision of construction operations. For example, a smart attachment for a milling machine can use sensors and advanced algorithms to adjust the cutting depth and speed based on the material being milled. This can ensure a consistent and precise cut, leading to higher-quality products and reduced waste. Similarly, smart attachments for 3D printers can use advanced sensors and software to detect and correct errors in real-time, leading to more accurate and reliable prints.

In construction, smart attachments can be used for a variety of applications, from excavation and grading to drilling and concrete pouring. In excavation and grading operations, smart attachments for excavators and bulldozers can really benefit efficiency and safety. For example, a smart bucket attachment can automatically adjust the angle and position of the bucket based on the material being excavated, while a smart grading attachment can provide real-time feedback on grade and slope, helping operators to achieve a higher level of accuracy.

In drilling operations, smart attachments can increase the accuracy and speed of drilling, while reducing the time and effort required for these operations. For example, a smart drilling attachment for a drilling machine can use advanced sensors and software to detect the hardness and density of the material being drilled and adjust the drilling speed and depth accordingly. This can ensure a consistent and precise drill, leading to higherquality products and reduced waste.

In concrete pouring operations, smart attachments can improve the efficiency and accuracy of these operations, while reducing the risk of errors and waste.

For example, a smart concrete pouring attachment can use advanced sensors and software to detect and correct errors in real-time, such as variations in temperature or moisture levels. This can ensure a consistent and accurate pour, leading to higher-quality products and reduced waste.

One example of a smart attachment in construction is the Trimble Earthworks Grade Control System. This system uses advanced sensors and software to provide real-time guidance and control for excavators and bulldozers, allowing operators to achieve a higher level of accuracy and efficiency in excavation and grading operations. The system can also be integrated with other technologies, such as drones and GPS, to provide a comprehensive solution for site management and monitoring.

Another example of a smart attachment in construction is the Hilti Jaibot robotic drilling system. This system uses advanced sensors and software to automatically detect and drill holes in concrete and other materials, reducing the time and effort required for drilling operations. The system can be controlled remotely.

JUNE 2023 119 PLANT PLANET smart attachments article

It can be programmed to drill a specific pattern or layout, making it ideal for large-scale construction projects that require precision and consistency.

In addition to the benefits and applications mentioned above, smart attachments in construction can also provide a range of other advantages, such as:

• Reduced downtime: Smart attachments can detect and diagnose problems in real-time, allowing for faster and more efficient maintenance and repair. This can reduce the downtime of construction machinery, leading to increased productivity and reduced costs.

• Improved sustainability: Smart attachments can optimise the use of materials and resources, reducing waste and environmental impact. A smart concrete pouring attachment can adjust the mix and volume of concrete based on the size and shape of the pour, reducing waste and energy consumption.

• Enhanced data collection and analysis: Smart attachments can collect and analyse data on construction operations, providing valuable insights into performance, efficiency, and safety. This can help construction companies to optimise their operations and make data-driven decisions.

120 JUNE 2023 PLANT PLANET article smart attachments

Despite the many benefits of smart attachments in construction, there are also some challenges and limitations that need to be addressed. These include:

• Cost: Smart attachments can be expensive and may require additional training and maintenance. This can make them less accessible for smaller construction companies or projects with limited budgets.

• Compatibility: Smart attachments may not be compatible with all types of construction machinery, which can limit their applicability and flexibility.

• Dependence on technology: Smart attachments rely on technology, which can be vulnerable to malfunctions or cybersecurity threats. This can pose a risk to construction operations and requires appropriate safeguards and measures to be put in place.

In conclusion, smart attachments are becoming an increasingly important part of the construction industry, offering a range of benefits that can improve the efficiency, safety, and accuracy of construction operations. While there are some challenges and limitations that need to be addressed, the potential advantages of smart attachments make them a promising area of innovation and development in construction. As the construction industry continues to evolve and adapt to new technologies and demands, smart attachments are likely to play an increasingly important role in shaping the future of construction.

HOW SAFE ARE YOUR TEAM?

The waste and recycling sector is a critical part of our economy and plays a crucial role in ensuring a sustainably led future. However, it is also a sector that is fraught with danger and risks. From hazardous waste to workplace accidents, the waste and recycling sector presents a significant challenge for workers and businesses when it comes to safety.

As with any large-scale waste operation, the use of heavy plant machinery and vehicles alongside operatives and ground workers, will always present a safety risk. No site, even with the highest health and safety standards and best practices is 100% free from danger.

In fact, between 2017 and 2021, the waste and recycling industry had the highest rate of fatal injuries per year – with 70% of all fatalities linked to workers being struck by vehicles or through contact with moving machinery.

In a report from the HSE in 2022, they highlighted the increased dangers associated with the waste and recycling sector - between 2017/18 and 2020/21, the waste sector recorded an average of five fatal injuries per year saying: “The waste and recycling sector has an elevated rate of fatal injury [between 2017/18 and 2020/21] compared to the average across all industries: 11 times as high.”

The most common cause of injury or fatality was being struck by a moving vehicle with 37% of all confirmed fatalities. Second was contact with moving machinery at 33%.

Although existing control methods such as physical barriers, warning signs and correct health and safety training for workers are already in place, they are never 100% effective due to human error,on-site distractions, and other mitigating circumstances.

So, what can be done to increase the control measures already in place to help make the industry even safer and reduce the number of injuries and fatalities?

One way to that you can increase your safety measures is to implement a plant proximity solution.

One of the best on the market is the Zonr Plant Proximity Solution. Zonr creates virtual safety exclusion zones that warn your workers when they are getting too close to dangerous or moving equipment.

The Zonr system creates a virtual barrier around anything you attach a sensor to, using UWB technology (the same technology found in an Apple Tag).

This allows workers and plant operators to have an extra layer of safety protection while on site.

NORTHERN IRELAND BEGINNING TO MOTOR!

Following on from the successful launch of the 100Te 110V Electric Mixer earlier this year, WINGET have now extended their range with the addition of 150Te and 175Te 110-volt, 1 phase Electric models.

“The interest and demand for larger Electric Mixers is certainly growing” says WINGET Managing Director Phil, Winnington “especially for Northern Ireland dealer, Peden Power Limited.”

Based in Magherafelt, Peden Power have been a main feature of Plant Sales throughout Northern Ireland for over 50 years and WINGET partners for at least 25 of those, a partnership built on loyalty, respect, and friendship.

Peden Power were keen to launch the new WINGET 175Te Site Mixer to the market on their stand at the recent Balmoral Show, Northern Ireland’s largest Agri-Food Event running from 10th to 13th May 2023 at Balmoral Park, Lisburn.

“Over 100,000 visitors attended over the 4 days,” said Philip Caskey, Director of Peden Power. “The market is really upbeat and the interest in the WINGET Diesel and new Electric Mixers was very high” he continues “as the housing market is picking up nicely again now.”

Following on from the successful launch of the 100Te 110V Electric Mixer earlier this year, WINGET have now extended their range with the addition of 150Te and 175Te 110-volt, 1 phase Electric models.

As shown in the picture - 1000 litres cleaned in 1 dayremoving all moisture to 0.01 % along with particulates down to ISO18/1 5/1 0 from what was out of range.

Oil is the lifeblood of a machines performance and so maintaining proper oil cleanliness and dryness is, without doubt, critical to the success of any machine’s reliability.

Oil contamination and moisture can increase the rate of component wear and lead to premature failure - it is well known that oil contamination is linked to the majority of industrial equipment failures and more so in industrial plant where working conditions are so severe.

Even the best oils under impeccable operating practises are vulnerable to contamination ... but can be minimised and controlled by simple and affordable measures. KLEENOIL is a cellulose depth filter that not only removes particulates - such as ferrous, oxides, airborne contaminants and fibres, but also water in the same easy, affordable application.

A machine with constantly cleansed oil is going to far outperform its counterparts and the consequences of maintaining clean oil in operation can be financially rewarding, primarily in extending oil life and reducing component wear so offering the key to its reliability.

KLEENOIL manufactures and supplies the finest, most affordable cellulose depth filtration to clean and maintain your lubricants to the finest cleanliness levels.

Such was the interest at the show that the first WINGET 175Te Electric Mixer was snapped up by U Hire NI Ltd based in Newtownards. The moment Niall McIver, Director at U Hire, saw the Mixer he said: ‘I want that’ Philip Caskey declares, and now they plan to change their entire fleet. The quality and robustness of the WINGET Mixers is well respected in Northern Ireland and the fact that it’s built here in the UK, is something customers like CP Hire and U Hire really appreciate.

Earlier in the month Stephen McMullan from C P Hire took delivery of the first batch of W200T Diesel mixers into their fleet in their Magherafelt depot with more planned over the next few months.

BUSINESS SENTIMENT INDEX – CAUTIOUS RETURN TO CONFIDENCE FOR CONSTRUCTION SMES

Close Brothers Asset Finance’s Business Sentiment Index (BSI), which measures SME business confidence, has risen for the first time since September 2021 following three consecutive falls, and a low at the end of 2022. These were caused, in the main, by rising inflation, energy cost increases and higher interest rates.

Despite the headwinds still being faced by small and medium-sized firms and inflation stubbornly remaining in double digits, wholesale energy prices have fallen from their summer 2022 peaks, and there appears to be more certainty about where interest rates rises are headed, all of which is helping firms plan with more assurance.

This change in confidence is better understood when looking more closely at Construction businesses’ priorities, which are achieving growth (29%; UK: 28%) and managing costs (26%; UK: 26%) well ahead of issues like paying down debts (9%; UK: 9%) and business consolidation (13%; UK: 9%).

Appetite for investment

Overall, the appetite to invest remains strong, as it was at the end of 2022, with 73% (UK: 75%) of Construction firms looking to seek funding for investment in the next 12 months.

Missed opportunities

The number of Construction companies that have missed business opportunities because of a lack of available funding stands at 44% (UK: 45%) in May 2023. While this is an improvement, these are historically ‘high’ figures – for example, in May 2022, 37% of UK respondents answered ‘yes’ to the question ‘have you missed a business opportunity in the last 12 months, due to lack of available finance?’.

It would appear businesses are concerned about impacting their cashflow by dipping into their reserves or taking out a standard loan and adding to their debt burden.

Economic outlook

Construction businesses are more negative than positive about the macroeconomic outlook, and compared to the end of 2022, firms in the sector are slightly more optimistic than they were. This indicator has contributed most to the decline in the overall BSI; for example, in November 2021 75% of respondents were positive about the economy – by December 2022 this had fallen to just 36%.

Predicted business performance

Predictions about future business performance remained stable, with the majority expecting their prospects to remain unchanged. Overall, fewer Construction firms predict they will contract than earlier in the year (9% against 16%).

PRIORITISING AIR QUALITY

At the Clean Air Summit in February 2022, Professor Chris Whitty, England’s Chief Medical Officer, was noted to have said that air pollution is everybody’s problem, but we can make a huge difference by acting collectively to solve it. He also mentioned that in the UK, we haven’t been diligent enough about addressing air quality and now we’re in a bit of a mess. Whitty highlighted the serious health problems that can be caused by poor air quality which include heart problems, respiratory illness and of course, the allpervasive cancer.

CROSSING THE THRESHOLD?

We know that there’s a relationship between air quality and negative climate impact. If we’re collectively going to achieve Net Zero by 2050, a great influence in the successful outcome will be the decarbonisation of supply chains. The ongoing development of our global built environments will always be a source of carbon emissions, unless we make a fundamental change in the way we continue to develop and embrace greener solutions. This should include universal monitoring of our air quality and acting upon that data to clean up the problem. Remove the sources of VOCs, hazardous dusts, fuel-based emissions and anything else that’s making us and our planet sick. We’ve crossed a threshold in the UK, where there are now calls for a change in legislation regarding air quality. The courts have deemed that deaths have been caused by air pollution as a contributory factor.

AIR QUALITY SOLUTIONS SHOULD NOT CREATE NEW PROBLEMS

Outside airborne pollutants find their way to us in our internal environments as long as there is a conduit. That might be from opening a door, window, or even through our ventilation and HVAC systems. Pollutants are also a major issue on industrial sites such as Waste Management areas, Construction / Demolition projects and in Quarries. Here at Air Spectrum, we seek to create the greenest solutions to improve air quality in various settings. Recently, as an example, we launched the UK’s first emissions-free dust suppression system –the ecotech Rotary Atomiser – to protect workers in dusty environments – usually in construction and demolition or waste and recycling. It is battery operated rather than using diesel, so there are zero

emissions generated while it’s doing its job to suppress dust in the atmosphere. It’s quiet, so doesn’t add to noise pollution; it runs for a whole working day on a single battery charge, so it’s energy and cost efficient.

The technology is familiar, but just used to create an environmentally friendly solution. This kind of substitution could easily make our building and engineering projects greener. It provides a safety solution that does not create an emissions problem while fulfilling its function.

DON’T FEAR THE FINANCIALS OF GREENING THE SUPPLY CHAIN

There is much trepidation about the outlay of adopting greener solutions, but deep down, it may well be a fear of beginning a different method of working. The benefits are certainly worth the change on many levels – environmental, financial, social, biological and cultural – and they are not just long term.

Decarbonising supply chains tackles an environmental threat from a cultural level, encouraging the pledge to use a cleaner solution wherever possible and make it the new norm. It’s not unlike switching from a diesel/petrol car to an electric one. It might seem a little odd at first, quieter, odourless, you have to stop and charge up every now and then, but it gets the job done without making a mess of the air that we breathe.

IMPROVING THE RELIABILITY AND RESILIENCE OF YOUR EQUIPMENT

The use of extremely intelligent HMI displays with graphical diagnostics, extensive communication and an easy control system on a construction site means they have to be tough enough for rough handling and harsh environments. Enovation displays are built for this life. They cope with bright sunlight, water and dust, constant vibration, hard knocks and extreme temperatures.

Finally, Enovation Controls uControl and PDM controllers provide you with finer control of hydraulic systems and superior machine functioning efficiency.

Dirty fuel: an engine killer

It’s hard to imagine a worse environment for fuel than a construction site. Clean fuel is critical in the latest generation of diesel engines. Their advanced electronic fuel injection systems are far more sensitive to dirty fuel than older engines.

Diesel suffers from three main types of contamination: water, microbial growth and solid particulates.

Harmful contaminants can enter a tank through airborne dust during refuelling, the delivery of poor-quality diesel or they can develop independently in diesel stored in an undisturbed state after a matter of months.

Downtime of mobile generators or heavy plant machinery will bring your site to a standstill. We understand the severe ramifications this can have, both financially and on your strict project timeline.

It can be as simple as contaminated fuel being delivered from your supplier to cause major breakdowns to equipment. Or it can be a loss of visibility of your equipment due to underperforming controllers, monitoring or displays. The direct way to increase profitability is to improve reliability. Keep your equipment running and your revenue safe with IPU.

Ultimate equipment control, visibility and reliability

The Senquip ORB is designed to connect any industrial sensor or system, giving you virtual access to your entire fleet from anywhere in the world. The ORB will allow the monitoring of fuel levels on critical storage tanks, aid in the prevention of fuel theft on unmanned and exposed sites, and be used as a GPS to track the location of equipment. You can be confident your equipment is ready for use, identify potential issues before they become expensive, and reduce the need for extensive site visits.

Fixed and mobile fuel polishing systems are ideal for keeping your stored fuel clean and useable. On-engine fuel filters are the last line of defence against this contamination, removing solid contaminants down to 2 microns and nearly 100% water through separation, coalescing and filtration.

Intrigued?

We will be at the Plantworx show between 13th – 15th June, on Stand C-CE5. We’ll be showcasing the products that improve the reliability and resilience of your machinery in real-life applications.

Rent Pay Go has recently attracted international attention with its newly launched rental platform built for plant hire and material handling companies in the UK.

Despite being UK based, Richard Moseley, its founder has conducted and participated in presentations in Italy and Canada and even demonstrated the Rent Pay Go platform to a client in Saudi Arabia.

Its founder, Richard Moseley, has worked in and therefore has gained extensive knowledge and experience of the construction and material handling industry over the last 27 years, and has therefore recognised that:

‘Digitalisation will, and must, play a key role in the growth of the plant hire and material handling industry. To meet the customers’ modern demands, we must move forward and offer them a more effective, simple, and instant solution to plant hire.’

Rental companies need a system to offer e-commerce rentals without the expense of building their own system and whilst companies could adopt their own live availability ordering system this may not be adequate for future demands.

Rent Pay Go recognises that to compete in a highly competitive rental industry, rental companies may also need to adopt a different strategy to maximise opportunities whilst protecting their customer base.

The Rent Pay Go rental platform draws attention with its strap line ‘CONNECT, GROW and EARN’, so what does it mean?

The heart of this new strategy is ‘sharing’, one of the fastest growing economies in the world. In the plant hire world this is also known as cross-hiring, whilst this does take place already in the industry the process can be very time consuming and

With patent pending technology Rent Pay Go has found a way for plant hire and material handling companies to allow cross hire to be done seamlessly between participating rental companies with whom they wish to work with and trust.

The benefits of using an online portal such as this are in abundance with improved customer satisfaction at the forefront.

By using the Rent Pay Go platform, you will improve customer relations by providing a self-service ecommerce rental desk, create a great customer experience with a consistent theme with easily accessible information and drive repeat business and great reviews, feedback, and word of mouth referrals.

Another benefit is reducing your administrative workload. With a self -service system in place, team members will not have to spend as much time answering phone calls, sending emails, obtaining insurance documents, or dealing with paperwork.

Not only does the Rent Pay Go system improve efficiency, but it can process rentals faster, increasing the number of transactions collected throughout the day, enabling staff to focus on more other tasks like maintenance, repairs, and customer service.

Stop searching for Rental assets for your customers manually.

Build digital partnerships with your trusted suppliers. Your partnerships could allow your company to provide a great solution for your customer base, enable local sourcing of equipment and enable you to earn revenue from assets you do not own or have available.

Spend more time getting to know your customers.

Reducing the administration burden on your hire desk could free up some valuable time. Allowing your team to talk to your customers more.

If you would like to know more and would like to join industry peers on the Rent Pay Go platform, you can take advantage of an introductory offer of free platform access for the first 6 months. The monthly fee thereafter is just £295.

TWO BRAND-NEW BATTERIES TO BE LAUNCHED FOR THE AWP MARKET

A Midlands-based subsidiary of battery manufacturer Leoch Battery, has launched two new batteries designed to fulfil the demand for use in the AWP sector.

Leoch Battery UK, which is based in Market Harborough, has added two new lead acid batteries which are extending the DT range that has already proved to be very popular with the industrial market, most of all for use in aerial work platforms. The two 6V batteries, DT-L16 420ah and DT-J305 330ah, have been created to offer this well-renowned series to a wider variety of machinery.

Chris North, Manager of Sales for Leoch Battery UK, said: “It was clear to us that there was a gap in the market for long-lasting, reliable batteries in the accessibility sector, so we began working on the designs for these two products.

“Whether you’re powering a scissor lift, cherry picker or boom, with the application being a major construction project or maintenance of industrial

facilities, the requirements from a battery are very similar. Long life, ease of change and deep cycling are all imperative. They must be reliable and efficient.

“We’re delighted to launch these batteries and look forward to being able to help even more clients with their needs for batteries in the AWP sector.”

The two new products were showcased at the industry’s Vertikal Days event being held in May. Leoch Battery UK has exhibited their products and industry knowledge at the event for the last two years.

Leoch Battery International boasts 10 manufacturing plants across the globe and operates in the Network Power, Motive Power and Transportation markets. Their operations are backed by a total of 100 collective years of staff experience in the battery industry, supplying products for an impressive host of applications and markets, in both industrial and lifestyle categories.

FIELD MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE THAT PUTS YOU IN CONTROL AND YOUR TEAM TO WORK

Re-flow is an award-winning field management system for construction, trusted by hundreds of companies nationwide, including industry heavyweights M.V. Kelly, Colas and BMI. The software brings all major operational processes under one roof. With a seamless link between remote sites and the back-office, through a user-friendly app and dashboard, Re-flow enables realtime data, instant communication, strictly enforced compliance and more. The system was built from the app backwards, designed with operative feedback as a guiding principle. An intuitive on-site experience is crucial to successfully implementing a digital system, Re-flow ensures that the transition won’t bring operations to a grinding halt. With an overwhelmingly high adoption rate, the system’s flexibility ensures workers can work with familiar processes and seamlessly pick up where they left off.

“It’s impacted the culture massively because it’s brought the site into safety more. Before, they’ve always seen safety as a burden. Re-flow has made it easier to complete safety forms, to the point where operatives are requesting additional forms. Before, it was a piece of paper - a tick exercise. Now they actually want more on site because they’re realising how it’s benefiting them.”

Manager, MV Kelly

One of Re-flow’s core features is its asset management capabilities. Dashboard users can easily store and manipulate data on all their vehicles, plant and equipment. Digital signatures and time and location tags on forms enable realtime tracking capabilities. Unique QR codes can be generated and attached to each vehicle, which can be scanned by operatives on-site. This enables office staff to remain current with the last known location and current user of each asset. Defects are recorded using vehicle safety checks and are instantly fed back to the dashboard on submission. Powerful automated workflows can then update the asset’s status within the records and automatically schedule a maintenance reminder. Even if a vehicle is serviceable, events such as maintenance or MOTs can be scheduled to automatically recur, or notifications can be set to remind staff of upcoming maintenance.

Out the box, Re-flow comes equipped with a catalogue of customizable, digital forms, including essentials such as vehicle safety checks, RAMS, dynamic risk assessments and more. These forms can then be tweaked and tailored to fit specifications or be built from scratch using an intuitive block-based form building system. Small and basic or sprawling and complex, all forms are built to regulatory standards. Tracking doesn’t just extend to vehicles and plant. Re-flow’s dashboard

automatically tracks app users in the field, accurate down to a meter. With support for Google Maps, GPS and what3words, live user tracking doesn’t just provide a more detailed overview of works. Being current on the location of workers enables reactive scheduling, allowing managers to assign nearby workers to jobs as the need emerges.
