CAPTAIN'S NOTES Jamie Whisken Club Captain

A

fternoon all, it’s been a long while since we’ve played back to back games at Tatnam and I feel after Tuesday night were going into this game in good shape. That was a fantastic derby day win against 1 of a main rivals, a win that was much needed after 4 previous draws. We felt if we could win that it could really kick us on going into the business end of the season and that’s what we did. I thought we were top drawer on the night in very tough conditions, the pitch was horrendous and stopped any fluent style of play from either side, 1 of the flood lights failed which meant it was very stop start, it was non league at its finest. As a team we remained fully focused through out though and kept our mind on the job. We defended fiercely and restricted them to only 1 chance which they failed to take so it was nice to get back to keeping a clean sheet. We had numerous chances it the first half but it wouldn’t quite drop in for us, but second half we were a lot more ruthless, took 2 chances and out the game to bed!! They

3

had a man sent off for a second bookable but to be honest it should of been a straight red, we were clever after that and used the ball well and made the extra man count. All in all it was a great 3 points and out us back on top! So today home to Biggleswade, a side that can be dangerous and are capable of beating us so it is vital we kick on from Tuesday and back up that win with another result. It was good to have both Gleese and Gilli back properly on Tuesday and if we can keep them both fit that will bring a lot more strength and experience to the squad. Get behind the boys today and let’s hear you singing, it honestly makes so much difference for us out there, be our 12th man! Up the Dolphins! Whisk

BOARDROOM NOTES Chris Reeves Vice Chairman

E

xcitement is never very far away when it comes to supporting Poole Town Football Club! On 27 minutes into the game against Weymouth last Tuesday night, Poole supporters were looking forward to the side continuing to secure control of the game that was slowly but surely coming about when the unexpected happened and the lights went out! My stress levels going up several degrees during the course of the 40 minutes it took to get them back on is an understatement! That is certainly a situation that I have never experienced previously during my involvement with the club. To have to contemplate the game being abandoned and the logistical nightmare of giving everyone at the game a voucher for the return rearranged fixture just did not bear contemplation. Fortunately, we had willing hands ready and able to assist in the form of the club’s electrician, George Bailey, Chris Kelly and Dick Thomas who all rallied to the cause and also former director, Steve Harvey, who was present at the fixture who immediately offered his services. I cannot thank George and Steve enough for what they did which was little short of miraculous. They managed to get the problem solved within seconds of the referee otherwise abandoning the game and of course we all know what happened thereafter as the team set about the task of securing the three points which took us back to the top of the table. In the end it was a clinical, comfortable victory with two superb goals, Luke Roberts’ in particular being quite spectacular. Other plus factors emerging from the game were of course the first start in a while by Richard Gillespie and the long awaited return to the field for Jamie Gleeson. With an excellent crowd enjoying the occasion and showing huge tolerance and patience during the blackout, the evening eventually turned out to be a highly satisfactory one. The icing on the cake of course was to learn that Dunstable had suffered a 5 : 1 away defeat at the hands

of Chesham to make the league table look even better. This afternoon we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Biggleswade Town to Tatnam and trust that they have had an uneventful journey here and that they enjoy a safe journey home. In the away fixture back in September a lone strike from Luke Holmes saw us collect all three points and with Chippenham having a difficult fixture in prospect away at Merthyr this afternoon, the opportunity is there for our lads to lay a significant marker in terms of our challenge for the league championship. Biggleswade have proved, during the course of this campaign that on their day they can be more than a match for anyone in the league and will harbour hopes themselves of securing a playoff place come April and our lads will need to produce another high quality performance if the points are to be secured. Next Saturday we make one of our shorter trips of the season when we travel to Paulton Rovers for another league fixture, whilst before that, this coming Tuesday, we have a much longer trip in prospect when we travel to Stratford for the rearranged game to that postponed early last month. If you fancy a place on the coach, then do contact Bill Reid to make your booking. Enjoy the game and don’t forget the 50 : 50 tickets

T

his re-arranged local derby took a while to get going, not helped by a floodlight failure on 27 minutes. The sending off of Weymouth’s new signing, Krac, together with the introduction of Luke Roberts for Poole proved the pivotal moments that turned the game for the Dolphins who dominated the last half hour. Until the flood light

7

failure there had been nothing of note beyond 2 bookings. The game was within 5 minutes of being abandoned when light was finally restored. However the first half continued with little of note – other than from a Poole corner a shot was cleared off the line and follow up header hit the bar (did not see who either player was – still adjusting to light after the darkness!).

Official website: www.pooletownfc.co.uk

LAST TIME OUT Yetton had a good long range effort for Weymouth early in the second half. Then Krac made a reckless challenge on Devlin on 60 minutes. Having already picked up a yellow the sending off was inevitable. With Roberts starting to make an impact the momentum swung to Poole. The break through came on 63 minutes when Roberts found Burbidge whose neat through ball was run on to by Brooks who smashed the ball in to the net. Poole made certain of the result when Roberts picked up the ball just over the half way mark and evaded several defenders before lobbing the ball over a defender and just inside the near

post on 76 minutes – an absolutely fantastic goal. Despite Poole giving the ball away too much Weymouth failed to capitalise – their best chance from Whisken’s error with Thomson squaring to Surridge who blasted over with only the keeper to beat. Not a classic and Poole were below their best, but a crucial 3 points against local rivals to get their title challenge back on track.

EVO-STIK SOUTHERN LEAGUE NEWS: Thanks went out on Saturday from Wimborne Town to all the local clubs including Poole Town who attended their game on Saturday 30th January which boosted their fight for financial stability a crowd of 331 turned up at The Cuthbury unfortunately Wimborne lost 0 – 2 to a strong Banbury Utd side. A large contingent of Poole supporters were in the crowd especially with the away game at Redditch falling foul of the wet weather. EVO-STIK SOUTHERN LEAGUE PREMIER FIXTURE NEWS: Continuing on into 2016 and on Tuesday 9th February we have a long midweek trip to Stratford Town, which is Stratford upon Avon in Warwickshire this is a new venue for us. More road miles although one of the shorter ones is on Saturday 13th February when we travel to Paulton Rovers in the Bristol area, which is followed on Saturday 20th February with a home game v Bideford from Devon and Hitchin Town at Tatnam on Tuesday 23rd. The February games should finish up with a trip to Cirencester Town on Saturday 27th. **The date for the home game v Hitchin Town on Tuesday 23rd February may have to change, it all depends on their Red Insure QF result away at Cambridge City if they progressed on Wednesday last the 3rd February then a new date will have to be agreed. The new date for the Redditch

13

trip will also hopefully have been sorted out once the Hitchin fixture situation is finally resolved. These notes had to be submitted prior to that game. We have to hope that the recent wet weather finally reverts to a decent run of drier conditions. WITH THE CUP COMPETITIONS UNDERWAY PLEASE KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR FIXTURE CHANGES. U21 NEWS: Numerous attempts have been made to organise league games and friendly matches for the U21 squad without success, hopefully once the weather improves so will the chances of some action for them. COMMERCIAL MATTERS What a night we had on Tuesday for the El Jurassico Derby, not only a great secondhalf performance but a return to winning ways and in the end a comfortable 2-0 victory, putting us back top of the league. Today we take on Biggleswade and hope to continue the winning ways and put some points between us and the chasing pack. Come on you Dolphins. I would like to thank Portman Stone for Sponsoring El Jurassico and CityIR who sponsored the Ball. Between them, they chose Marvin Brooks as their Man of the Match. I would also like to thank Hayden Shaw who was mascot on the night and got his picture taken with his favorite player, Marvin Brooks, who must have been inspired based on his performance on the night. For today’s game, we have Portman Stone back again as Match Sponsor and the Ball is Sponsored by East Dorset Guide Dogs, who will be making a charity collection today. Let’s hope you all have a great afternoon and hopefully the right result. We are now sold out for Match and Ball Sponsors for the remainder of this season and I would like to thank all those companies and individuals that have supported us over this season. We now only have one member of staff left to sponsor – Kit Man, Paul Ayley. If you would like to sponsor Paul, it’s just £85. We also have just three Mascot (£40) places still available this season. Please check the website for availability and get in contact.

If you have never tried Tatnam Trebble, I promise you it will be the most tasty Cheddar you have ever had. Seek out Martin Smith on the Cheese table at home games. Try one of his Pork pies as well, you will not be disappointed. The club turned 125 years old on 20th Sept and to mark the occasion we are looking to form a new Vice-Presidents Board. Cost is £5,000 and in return you will receive free entry to Tatnam for 3 years, with boardroom hospitality, for two people plus seats at the Sportsmans Dinner and End of Season Presentation Dinner, as well as the chance to shape the future of the club. Interested parties are to contact any member of the board. I would like to thank all of you who are using http://pooletownfootballclub.easysearch.org.uk/ as your search engine. We earn 1/2p per search and that amounts to a couple of pounds per week. That combined with http://www.easyfundraising.org. uk/causes/pooletownfootballclub/ we have now raised over £1,000 for the club. Thanks to all those that support these initiatives. We are planning another Legends Night (Hall of Fame). This is taking place on Friday 19th February. Speak to Dick behind the bar or see the advert in this programme for further details. We will have the usual Spring Lunch, at Patricks Restaurant on Friday April 1st, details to be released shortly. Have you heard about Last Man Standing? Just £10 to enter, pick a premier League side to win, get it right and stay in. It’s as simple as that. See Pippa for details.
