ALLEGHENY NATIONAL FOREST

Established in 1923, the Allegheny National Forest is Pennsylvania’s only national forest.

Situated in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains, the forest is composed of plateau tops with elevations up to 2,300 feet and valleys down to 1,000 feet above sea level. The forest is 517,000 acres and includes land in Elk, Forest, McKean and Warren counties.

HIKING

With more than 200 miles of hiking trails, 53 miles of cross-country ski trails and 18 miles of interpretive trails the Allegheny National Forest offers a variety of hiking experiences. Maps for each trail are available on that trails web page by visiting www.fs.usda.gov/activity/ allegheny/recreation/hiking/?recid=6083&actid=51.

Trails include:

• Brush Hollow Cross Country Ski and Hiking trail, a 7.7 mile-trail suitable for cross-country skiing, mountain biking and snowshoeing;

• Hearts Content Trails, a 7.8 mile-trail suitable for hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing;

• Hickory Creek Wilderness Trails, a 12-mile trail;

• Minister Creek Trail, a 6.6-mile trail;

• Morrison Creek Hiking Trail, an 11.4-mile trail;

• the North Country National Scenic Trail, a 96.3-mile trail also suitable for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing;

• Tracy Ridge, a 33.69-mile trail also suitable for cross-country skiing; and

• Twin Lakes Hiking Trail, a 15.8 mile trail also suitable for cross-country skiing and mountain biking.

ALLEGHENY RESERVOIR

A major outdoor recreational attraction on the Forest is the 7,647 acre Allegheny Reservoir. At normal summer pool level the reservoir is 27 miles long (14 miles in Pennsylvania and 13 miles in New York) with 91 miles of shoreline.

The undeveloped Allegheny Reservoir shoreline and National Forest System land surrounding the Reservoir provide the largest outdoor recreation opportunities in northwestern Pennsylvania. Highly developed infrastructure (e.g. paved roads, pressurized water systems, sewage treatment plants and electrical service) are in place to serve campgrounds with utilities, flush toilets and hot water showers. Other facilities include picnic areas, swimming beaches, and shoreline fishing opportunities and fishing piers.

The reservoir was created in the 1960s when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed the Kinzua Dam on the upper Allegheny River. The reservoir water level and water surface is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The adjacent shoreline is primarily owned and managed in Pennsylvania by the U.S. Forest Service and in New York by the Seneca Nation of Indians, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, and Cattaraugus County, N.Y.

Only a few private landowners exist on the New York shoreline. The Allegheny Reservoir is unique because very little private commercial development exists along its shoreline. The majority of the existing developed recreation sites on the PA portion of the Reservoir are operated and maintained by the Allegheny National Forest.

BRADFORD RANGER DISTRICT

The Bradford Ranger District covers the northern half of the Allegheny National Forest. Highlights of this area include the Allegheny Reservoir, Wild and Scenic Allegheny River and Hearts Content.

Hidden gems found on the district are the Old Powerhouse, Timberdoodle Flats Interpretive Trail and Hall Barn Wildlife Viewing Area.

MARIENVILLE RANGER DISTRICT

The Marienville Ranger District covers the southern half of the Allegheny National Forest. Highlights of this area include the Penoke, Marienville and Timberline OHV trails, Wild and Scenic Clarion River and Buzzard

Swamp.

Hidden gems on this district include the Little Drummer Trail, Laurel Mill Trail and Beaver Meadows.

NORTH COUNTRY NATIONAL SCENIC TRAIL

Walk among rocks and waterfalls, Allegheny hardwoods and stands of mountain laurel! Explore the 96.3 miles of North Country National Scenic Trail (NCNST) that meander through the historic lands of the Iroquois, the Allegheny Plateau, some of the most valuable black cherry and oak in the world, landscapes rich in history, wildlife, and natural beauty.

A unique national resource, the NCNST is part of a 3,200-mile National Scenic Trail to extend from Crown Point, NY to Lake Sakakawea, ND. Once completed, it will be the longest continuous foot path in the US.

KINZUA BRIDGE STATE PARK IS A

TMcKean County, is the home of the reinvented Kinzua Viaduct.

The Viaduct, once the longest and tallest railroad structure at 2,053 feet long and 301 feet high, was partially destroyed by a tornado during 2003.

Reinvented as a pedestrian walkway during 2011, visitors can stroll 600 feet out on the remaining support towers, peer miles out into the Kinzua Gorge, and gaze down through the partial glass platform at the end of the walkway.

The Kinzua Bridge State Park Visitor Center and Park Office features great views, self-guiding exhibits, and information about the surrounding area.

Picnicking and trail opportunities are available. The Kinzua Bridge Scenic Byway is a designated shared use hike/bike corridor.

The park is open every day of the year, sunrise to sunset. Day use areas close at dusk. The visitor center and park office is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Oct. 31.

SKYWALK ADVISORY

The skywalk will be open unless weather conditions are unsafe due to frost and ice in late fall through winter. Contact the park for current conditions.

RECREATIONAL ADVISORY

Due to unsafe conditions in the area of the downed towers, visitors are prohibited from walking under the skywalk and in the surrounding area as indicated on the map.

The skywalk gives close-up views of the viaduct and wide views of the Kinzua Creek Valley. The overlook is excellent for viewing the skywalk and the valley. Both views are great for viewing fall foliage, which peaks the first two weeks of October.

The Picture Taking Platform under the skywalk allows visitors to photograph themselves and the remaining support towers in an interesting “3D” effect. A short side trail from the Kinzua Creek Trail leads to the platform.

LEARN, EXPERIENCE, CONNECT

The park offers a wide variety of environmental education and recreation programs year round. Through hands-on activities, guided walks, and informational programs, participants gain an appreciation and under-

KINZUA BRIDGE STATE PARK VISITOR CENTER AND PARK OFFICE

The Kinzua Bridge State Park Visitor Center and Park Office opened on July 1, 2016. It provides a location for visitors to interact with park staff, explore the history of the viaduct, and learn more about the natural landscape and wildlife.

The visitor center features a reception area, gift shop, spectacular view of the skywalk, and two levels of self-guided and interactive exhibits that focus on engineering, environment, nature, energy, and history as they relate to the viaduct and local area. Some of the exhibits are hands-on for the enjoyment of all ages, while others include videos and original artifacts.

SPECIAL EVENTS

The Kinzua Bridge Foundation Inc. organizes a yearly fall festival that is held for two days during the third weekend of September that includes arts, crafts, food vendors, and musical entertainment.

The foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the Kinzua Viaduct, the promotion of the viaduct’s historical and cultural significance, as well as supporting the state park.

ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING STATION

A two-plug, electric-vehicle charging station is available for public use in the bus and RV parking area near the picnic pavilion. Please move to another parking space once a vehicle has been charged.

HIKING

• General Kane Trail — 1.6 miles, easiest hiking. The trail begins and ends at the overflow parking area and wanders through hardwood forests of black cherry and maple trees, which have been ravaged and renewed by nature since the 2003 tornado. The loop trail is named for General Thomas Leiper Kane, the visionary behind Kinzua Bridge. During the Civil War, Kane assembled the famed Bucktail Regiment. He also supported slave rights, and, later, the Latter-day Saint movement as it migrated westward.

• Kinzua Creek Trail — four-tenths of a mile, one-way, most difficult hiking. This steep and challenging trail should only be attempted by visitors with proper footwear and hiking experience. The trail begins on the paved walkway to the overlook and switchbacks to the valley bottom, giving close-up views of the supports for the skywalk and spectacular views of the fallen towers. The trail ends at the far side of the footbridge. Do not enter the debris field. Entrance into the debris field is strictly prohibited. Hikers must retrace their steps back to the trailhead. Access to the short trail for the Picture Taking Platform is near the Overlook and the Kinzua Creek Trail trailhead.

Hikers on the Kinzua Creek Trail should be in good physical condition, wear sturdy boots, and use caution due to steep trail sections.

Hiking Safety

• Always wear sturdy boots. Wearing sneakers, sandals,

“water shoes,” and “street shoes” can lead to serious accidents.

• Report inappropriate behavior to the authorities.Give yourself plenty of time for your hike. Plan to be off the trails well before dark.

• Let someone know where you are hiking and when you should return.

• Stay on the trails. Leaving the trail causes damage to unique natural resources, promotes erosion, and can be dangerous.

• Don’t take shortcuts from one trail section to another. Taking shortcuts down switchbacks is dangerous and causes trail damage.

PICNICKING AT KINZUA BRIDGE STATE PARK

The picnic area has shaded picnic tables. Modern restrooms are in the visitor center. A picnic pavilion that seats 60 people is accessible to people with disabilities. The pavilion can be reserved up to 11 months in advance for a fee. If unreserved it is free on a first-come, firstserved basis.

WILDLIFE WATCHING AT KINZUA BRIDGE STATE PARK

Extensive logging from 1890 to 1930 led to the Allegheny hardwood forest that now covers most of the region. The forest in and around the park consists mainly of black cherry, sugar maple, white ash, American beech, as well as other trees and shrubs. These northern hardwoods attract thousands of visitors every fall to the skywalk to view the changing of the leaves. Conifers, including the eastern hemlock (our state tree) and eastern white pine, are also found throughout the region. Areas where swaths of mature trees were blown down during the tornado now contain small trees, shrubs, and wildflowers, providing for a greater diversity of wildlife habitat.

Adding to the park’s beauty, wildflowers can be found throughout the seasons. Look for painted trilliums, spring beauties, and trout lilies in the spring, or jack-inthe-pulpits, Indian pipes, and asters during the summer. Local wildlife includes black bear, white-tailed deer, turkey, grouse, coyote, cottontail rabbit, snowshoe hare, porcupine, bobcat, raccoon, saw-whet owl, barred owl and numerous songbirds.

From the skywalk and other park overlooks, turkey vultures are often seen circling on the summer air currents. In winter, red-tailed hawks can be seen doing the same. Occasionally, a bald eagle is observed flying over the valley.

Wildlife Watching Tips

When watching wildlife, keep in mind the following tips to enhance the quality of your viewing experience.

• Fade into the woodwork:

• Wear dull colors that will not contrast with your surroundings.

• Walk softly and crouch behind trees or rocks to blend in and break up your outline. Think like an animal:

• Imagine how the animal you are seeking spends its day. Check field guides to find out about preferred habitats.

• As a rule, the border between two habitats is a good place to see residents from both places.

• Dusk and dawn are usually the best times of day for viewing.

• Consider the weather. For instance, after a rain, many animals emerge to feed.

Let animals be themselves:

• Resist the temptation to ‘save’ young animals. The mother is usually watching from a safe distance.

• Give nests a wide berth. Your visit may lead predators to the nest.

• Let animals eat their natural foods. Sharing your sandwich may harm the digestive systems of wild animals and get animals hooked on handouts.

Viewing etiquette:

• Leave pets at home.

• Observe from a distance.

• Film and photograph wildlife responsibly. If an animal shows stress, move away.

• Stay on trails to lessen impact.

• Treat others courteously. Report inappropriate behavior to the authorities.

CHAPMAN STATE PARK

The 862-acre Chapman State Park includes the 68-acre Chapman Lake on the West Branch of Tionesta Creek.

Adjacent to state game lands and the Allegheny National Forest, Chapman is an oasis of recreational facilities in a vast area of wilderness.

The park is open every day of the year, sunrise to sunset. Day use areas close at dusk.

The park office is open specific hours. The beach, overnight areas, and other areas are open specific seasons and hours. Contact the park office for facility seasons and hours.

The park is off Route 6 in Warren County, near the town of Clarendon, and is adjacent to the Allegheny National Forest and State Game Lands 29. Turn on to Railroad Street in the town of Clarendon, which becomes Chapman Dam Road. Follow Chapman Dam Road 5 miles to the park.

An environmental educator is on staff for the summer season and offers a variety of programming including guided walks, stream studies, children’s programs, occasional guest speakers and special programming upon request.

HIKING AT CHAPMAN STATE PARK

There are 14 miles of trails in Chapman State Park. Park officials recommend anyone hiking always take a map and compass and know how to use them; leave word with a family member, friend, or the park office concerning the trails that will be taken, destination, and expected return time.

Trails include:

• Adams Run Trail — .4 mile, easiest hiking, yellow blazes. The trail head is near the restroom at the base of the sledding hill and follows Adams Run up a gradual grade until the trail ends at Hunters Ridge Trail. There is a 0.25 mile parallel trail on the opposite side of Adams Run to make a shorter loop out of the first half of the trail. There are many wet areas, especially in the spring, which may persist throughout the summer. This trail is for hiking and experienced cross-country skiing.

• Crooked Pine Trail — one-half mile, most difficult hiking, yellow blazes. A short connector trail between Hunters Ridge Trail and the Group Tenting Area parking lot, this trail is steep and meanders through several different forest types. This trail is for hiking only.

• Game Lands Road — six miles, more difficult hiking, no blazes. An easy trail which is quite flat over its entire

length, the road runs from the parking lot near the group tenting area, 0.5 miles within the park, continuing through State Game Lands 29, and eventually to Dunham Siding or Hermit Springs. It also may be accessed from the campground by using the Old Railroad Grade/Lowlands Trail. The road is gated at both ends and has many turn offs, which may or may not be gated. Foot, horse, and bicycle travel is allowed only on designated trails and roads, marked by a green triangle sign. Trails and roads marked with a red triangle sign allow foot travel only. (Foot traffic includes cross-country skiing.) Trails are closed for bicycles and horses from the last Saturday in September to the third Saturday in January unless the visitor is hunting or fishing. The trails are open Sundays during this time.

VISITORS’ GUIDE

• Hunters Ridge Trail — 2.75 miles, most difficult hiking, yellow blazes. Much of this trail is rugged and hilly. Be conscientious of your ability and health. One end of the trail is on Forest Road 437 near the park office and the other end is near the parking lot at the end of the Game Land Road. A loop can be made by following Game Land Road and Warming Hut Trail. There are many wet areas, especially in the spring, which may persist throughout the summer. At times, the trail follows the boundary between the park and the state game lands. (This boundary is blazed in white. Do not mistake it for the trail.) The trail also crosses many oil lease roads. Be careful to find the blazes on the other side of the road. Do not follow these roads! They are many miles long and have numerous, confusing turn-offs. This trail is for hiking only.

• Lowlands Trail — .3 miles, easiest hiking, blue blazes. One end of the trail is on the Game Land Road and the other is between sites #23 and #25 of the campground. It is an easy trail along an old railroad grade, across the Swinging Bridge over the West Branch of Tionesta Creek, and through a wetland area above the lake. The Old Railroad Grade may be followed past the Swinging Bridge through State Game Lands 29 where it connects with the Game Land Road. This trail is for hiking,

bicycling, and cross-country skiing. Bicyclers and skiers should be very careful crossing the Swinging Bridge and its steps.

• Lumber Trail — seven-tenths of a mile, easiest hiking, orange and yellow blazes. This trail is suitable for hikers of all ages. The first portion of the trail is shared with the Allegheny National Forest Snowmobile Trail, blazed with orange diamonds, and is easy with little grade. The trailhead is along the Main Park Road between the beach and the campground. The trail uses an abandoned logging road as its base, and evidence of the lumbering activity can still be seen along the length of the trail. This trail is for hiking. Bicycling and snowmobiling is permitted only on the portion shared with the snowmobile trail.

• Nature Trail — 1.2 miles, easiest hiking, yellow blazes. Suitable for hikers of all ages, the trail is mostly level along the lakeshore, but has some short, steep hills around the Upper Loop of the campground. One end of the trail is along the service road near the amphitheater and the other is located partway up Lumber Trail. A short loop can be made where the trail splits behind the Upper Loop of the campground. This short section starts along the road near the campground host site and RV dump station. This trail is for hiking only. The section of the Nature Trail from the amphitheater to Old Railroad Grade/Lowlands trail is a self-guiding trail with interpretive signs at ten designated points of interest. The order of the signs is intended to start at the amphitheater, but can be followed in either direction.

• Orchard Trail — .13 mile, easiest hiking, yellow blazes. A short connector trail between the Warming Hut Trail and Hunters Ridge Trail, this trail is moderately steep and travels through an old apple orchard. This trail is for hiking only.

• Penny Run Trail — 1.4 miles, more difficult hiking, blue blazes. Hiking difficulty is moderate with steady uphill grades. One end of the trail is across the Main Park Road from the Spillway Parking Lot and the other is across the Main Park Road from the Pavilion #2 Parking Lot. The trail travels through diverse hardwood and hemlock forest in the park and in the neighboring Allegheny National Forest. This trail is usually wet, with some spots persisting throughout the year. This trail is for hiking and experienced cross-country skiing.

• Warming Hut Trail — seven-tenths of a mile, easiest hiking, orange diamond blazes. This moderately easy trail follows the lakeshore and climbs a gradual hill above the dam. One end of the trail is across Forest Road 437 from the office and the other is at the warming hut. This trail is for hiking, snowmobiling, bicycling, and cross-country skiing.

PRESQUE ISLE STATE PARK VISITORS’

Presque Isle State Park is a 3,200-acre sandy peninsula that arches into Lake Erie. As Pennsylvania’s only “seashore,” Presque Isle offers its visitors a beautiful coastline and many recreational activities, including swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, bicycling, and in-line skating.

Presque Isle is a day-use park that provides year-round recreational opportunities. Overnight accommodations are available nearby.

The neck of the peninsula is attached to the mainland four miles west of downtown Erie. The park creates Presque Isle Bay, a wide and deep harbor for the city of Erie. The bay attracts many pleasure boats and worldwide freighters -- making Erie an important Great Lakes shipping port.

A National Natural Landmark, Presque Isle is a favorite spot for migrating birds. Because of the many unique habitats, Presque Isle contains a greater number of the state’s endangered, threatened, and rare species than any other area of comparable size in Pennsylvania.

Whether you come to enjoy the sandy beaches, study ecological diversity, or learn about the historical significance of the peninsula, there is something for everyone at Presque Isle State Park.

Amenities include a boat launch, comfort station, environmental education center, lighthouse, marina, parking, picnic shelter, picnic tables, ranger station, sanitary dump or pump out station, seasonal food and refreshment concessions at the beach.

TOM RIDGE ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER

The Tom Ridge Environmental Center (TREC) is the gateway to Presque Isle State Park, and the gateway to discovery.

This 65,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art, green-designed facility encourages visitors to experience the unique history and ever-changing, diverse ecosystems of Presque Isle State Park.

Built to symbolize the peninsula in its architectural design, the TREC opened during 2006 and is the first building in the Pennsylvania Bureau of State Parks to earn a LEED silver certification rating. This multi-functional building houses the park office, laboratories, and many opportunities for visitors.

An educational center at heart, TREC is dedicated to teaching visitors about Presque Isle and the many different forms of life that inhabit this unique peninsula.

GUIDE

TREC also serves as a center for research, contributing to conservation efforts and promoting environmental awareness, helping to preserve the unparalleled beauty of Presque Isle.

Large-format movies, guided tours, and other activities are available.

Admission is free to the interactive exhibits and the 75-foot observation tower.

PRESQUE ISLE HIKING TRAILS

Presque Isle has 11 miles of trails exclusively for walkers, ranging from a short quarter-mile trail near Cranberry Pond to a 2-mile Dead Pond Trail through different types of habitats. Many of the trails connect and so hikers are able to enjoy longer treks if they wish. They are also welcome on the 13.5 mile multi-purpose trail, which they share with cyclists, in-line skaters and joggers. Part of this trail is plowed in winter for walkers and the rest is left snow-covered for skiers.

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources notes that due to fluctuating lake levels, parts of trails are wet enough in some seasons to require boots.

Fox Trail: This trail winds through wooded swamps and oak-maple forests. It is maintained and groomed as a cross-country ski trail in the winter. (.5 miles)

Old Gas Well Trail: This trail follows a ridge between Beach 7 and the Marina. The trail passes a gas well that produces gas used at Presque Isle State Park. (.5 miles)

Canoe Portage Trail: This short walk between sand dunes and forest connects Pettinato Beach (Beach 8) to Marina Lake. (.25 miles)

Ridge Trail: This trail follows the edge of Cranberry Pond along a portion of ridge that was a beach dune 300 years ago. (.5 miles)

Marsh Trail: This trail bisects Cranberry Pond, one of the many ponds on Presque Isle. The pond formed as water was trapped between two ridges. (.25 miles)

Sidewalk Trail: This historic trail was originally constructed by the U.S. Lighthouse Service as a path from the Presque Isle Lighthouse to the U.S. Lighthouse Service boathouse in Misery Bay. The trail was once a wooden boardwalk and was resurfaced with concrete in 1925. (1.25 miles)

Dead Pond Trail: This trail leads over several former dunes and through several distinct ecological zones. You

will walk through oak-maple forest, pines and sandplains. (2 miles)

A-Trail: This short trail connects Pine Tree Picnic Area to Dead Pond Trail and passes through a vernal pond. When the vernal pond fills with water in the spring, the trail is wet. (.2 miles)

B-Trail: This short trail connects Pine Tree Road to Dead Pond Trail and passes through a stand of pines. (.25 miles)

Pine Tree Trail: This trail follows the edge of a sandplain community and a stand of pines. Located along this trail are the remains of the Biology Field Lab that was used by Dr. O. E. Jennings to study plant succession on Presque Isle. (.7 miles)

Gull Point Trail: This trail begins at the kiosk at the east end of the Budny Beach (Beach 10) parking lot and makes a loop through Gull Point. At the southeast end of the loop, a trail leads to the edge of the Special Management Area and an observation platform for viewing shorebirds. (1.5 miles)

North Pier Trail: This trail follows the shoreline between North Pier and Beach 11, along one of the sand ridges. An old firing range used for training during World War II may be seen along this trail. (.7 miles)

Grave Yard Pond Trail: This trail follows the shoreline along Grave Yard Pond, which as legend has it was the final resting place for many of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s men during the winter of 1813-1814. Two boat landings along the trail offer scenic views of the lagoons and Big Pond (.75 miles)

Long Pond Trail: This trail follows the shoreline of Long Pond, one of the ponds within the lagoon. Approximately halfway along this trail is a boat landing. The landing is a popular fishing spot and offers a scenic view of the lagoon. (1 mile) Duck Pond Trail: This trail begins at Duck Pond and intersects the Canoe Portage Trail and connects with the Old Gas Well Trail. (.5 miles)

Duck Pond Trail: This trail begins at Duck Pond and intersects the Canoe Portage Trail and connects with the Old Gas Well Trail. (.5 miles)

Karl Boyes Multi-purpose National Recreation Trail: The Multi-Purpose Trail and extension makes a 13.5mile circuit of the park. This paved trail is designated as a National Recreation Trail. This ADA accessible trail is popular with bicyclists, in-line skaters and joggers. During the winter, the trail is plowed from the entrance to the park office for hikers. For cross-country skiers, the trail is left snow covered from the park office to Perry Monument.

The Humane Society event will be held Saturday, July 29. The Industrial Tournament will be three weeks later –Friday, Aug. 18, through Sunday, Aug. 20. Both will be held at Betts Park.

“This long-standing event has provided a fun-filled weekend of business-to-business competition,” Warren County Chamber of Business and Industry Director of Chamber Operations and Tourism John Papalia said. “We look forward to another fun filled year of competition.”

“Michael started this tournament to prepare for the industrial tournament,” Paws Along the River Humane Society Executive Director Karen Kolos said. “It was to be the warm up tourney to prepare for the big industrial tournament. Our tournament was special and a player did not have to work for a company to play or be in a league. Anyone could play for the age of 16.”

In the past, the event drew upwards of 35 times.

“The tournament was the second largest in the county and we drew teams from Erie, Pittsburgh and nearby towns,” Kolos said. “Our 3-day-long tournament was our largest fundraiser raising more than $6,000 to $7,000 every year. Local businesses supported our tournament and the industrial tournament which created excitement to the upcoming ball season at Betts Park.”

“Michael loved softball and sat on the board for the slow pitch teams,” she said. “He was instrumental in developing the over-30 league and contributed many hours to this group’s organization.

“After his passing in 2009 there was a slow decrease in the number of teams and players for our tournament,”

Kolos said. “Other organizations and tournaments also saw decreases in players.”

The Industrial Tournament has undergone changes to adapt to those decreases.

This year, WCCBI has created a new division.

“We are looking to continue to build up the business competition and have created a new division that allows smaller chamber member businesses to join together and form teams to compete against each other,” Papalia said. Both tournaments provide funding to Warren County organizations.

“A portion of the event proceeds benefits the United Fund of Warren County,” Papalia said of the Industrial Tournament.

“We need teams and players to sign up and know that their participation provides PAWS with much needed funds to keep working for our community’s animals,” Kolos said. “We can’t forget the man who started our fundraiser and the outstanding sponsors in United Refining Company and Kinzua Veterinary Clinic that continue their efforts to keep us playing ball.”

As one of Warren County’s long-standing community events, we are proud to once again honor the unwavering spirit of handcrafted artistry by putting together a weekend that cannot be equaled. Combining this dedication to creativity with a committed effort to offer family-centered experiences, Wild Wind is an event for all. Children can delight in the ever-popular traveling petting zoo, face painting, balloon artistry, and more. Another favorite is the Tamarack Wildlife Center with its birds of prey exhibit and lectures.

Returning this year, teams of oxen and their 4-H trainers will be stationed throughout the fairgrounds. Visi-

tors are encouraged to ask questions about these magnificent animals.

Alexander the Magician is back again to delight children and adults alike with a new twist on his unique blend of humor and enchantments. This award-winning entertainer plans to share his talents with performances throughout the weekend.

ART THAT MATTERS TO THE PLANET FULFILLING ROGER TORY PETERSON’S MISSION

Atthe Roger Tory Peterson Institute, we believe that art matters to the planet.

The Roger Tory Peterson Institute (RTPI) celebrates art inspired by the natural world. Contemporary artists engage with nature in different ways, and with a variety of messages. Art can be a personal source of healing, inspiration and reflection. It can also instill in the viewer a sense of wonder, promote environmental stewardship, encourage systemic change, or facilitate conversation.

Roger Tory Peterson devoted his career not only to art, but also to activism on behalf of the environment. As the father of the modern field guide, Peterson’s artwork offered a way for readers to discover the beauty and wonder of nature. Throughout his career, he also helped us understand the impact of human activity on nature. He told us about threats birds were facing, warned us of the consequences of inaction, and affected change on behalf of the environment.

Today, Peterson’s continuing influence as an artist, naturalist, and activist is evident in the artistic practice of contemporary nature artists. Through their process and resulting work, they promote a connection between society and nature in hopes that we are inspired to preserve it for generations to come. Like Peterson, they help us explore, discover, and fall in love with the natural world.

RTPI carries on Peterson’s legacy by nurturing the next generation of artists. RTPI presents exhibitions by artists who encourage us to look more closely at nature, so

that we might better appreciate it. They share knowledge about nature to help us better understand the world around us. They raise awareness about environmental issues in order to foster dialogue and promote change. The resulting dialogue between the artist and viewer speaks to the intuitive and transformational power of their art.

Come discover Art that Matters to the Planet at RTPI. Our annual signature exhibition, Art that Matters to the Planet: Interconnectivity , opens June 24. Inspired by emerging science about the underground web of roots and fungi which connects trees and plants, this exhibition

features artists who explore the ways in which trees serve as a metaphor for our relationship with nature, and with each other.

TRAIL FEST TO BRING MOUNTAIN BIKERS TO THE FOREST

When you’ve got a world-class amenity, you want to show it off.

That’s what Trail Fest does for the Trails at Jakes Rocks.

The seventh annual version of the festival is set for Sept. 22 to 24, centered at the Kinzua Beach recreation area and the TAJR parking lot.

The event generally brings in over 500 riders and many of them come from distance to participate - Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Washington, DC and New Jersey in past years.

John Papalia, the Warren County Chamber of Business & Industry’s director of chamber operations and tourism said the 2021 event brought over 500 mountain bikers to the area and that most of them were from out of town.

The event brings vendors, food and music but also elements that make it a truly mountain-biking focused event - clinics, organized rides in the past set up by skill level, a race and shuttle service covered in the cost of registration. More information can be found at wccbi.org while registration is available at bikereg.com/jakes-rocks-trail-fest.

The event is hosted by the Warren County Chamber of Business and Industry with the support of the Northern Allegheny Mountain Bike Association, Western New York Mountain Bike Association, and the Allegheny National Forest.

We offer many beautiful indoor & outdoor settings for you to reserve. Also there is extraordinary catering to choose from for all of your events. www.theforkandbarrel.com 554 Country Club Rd Corry, PA 16407 (814)~964~4687

The National Comedy Center, the nation’s official museum and cultural institution dedicated to comedy, has announced that kids and teens, age 17 and under, will be admitted to its museums for free throughout the summer, made possible with the generous support of Shults Auto Group.

This unprecedented, 14-week summer admission opportunity will enable more families to experience the National Comedy Center in Jamestown, NY on the heels of it being named one of U.S. News & World Report’s “Top 25 Family Weekend Getaways” in the country – joining Walt Disney World and Disneyland on that list. Up to two kids and teens will be admitted free with an accompanying paying adult from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.

“With free admission for kids all summer long, at a national attraction named one of the best family destinations in the country and going toe-to-toe with spots like Disneyland on that list, there has never been a better time to visit the National Comedy Center,” stated National Comedy Center Executive Director Journey Gunderson. “We are thrilled that this unique opportunity makes the interactive museum experience more accessible for families – made possible by the generous underwriting of Shults Auto Group,” stated National Comedy Center Executive Director Journey Gunderson.

“Shults Auto Group is pleased to join with the National Comedy Center to offer more kids the chance to experience this award-winning museum throughout the summer months, while making it more accessible than ever before for residents of our community and throughout Western New York,” stated Tim Shults, President of

In addition to being recently named by U.S. News & World Report as a “25 Top Family Weekend Getaway in the U.S.” in a list of destinations that included Walt Disney World and Disneyland, Western New York Family Magazine called the National Comedy Center a “Must See Destination for school-aged children,”, and I LOVE NY named the Comedy Center one of the best “family-friendly indoor activities” in New York State. Macaroni KID raved about the Comedy Center’s “kid-friendly laughs,” stating, ”We spent nearly four hours at the museum and still had to drag our 7- and 9-year-olds away!”

The Kids and Teens Free program will run from May 26, 2023 through Monday, September 4, 2023. Up to two kids and teens will be admitted free to both the National Comedy Center and the Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Museum with the purchase of an admission ticket by an accompanying adult.
