Ruth Bader Ginsburg by Syndi Reibman
uth Bader Ginsburg. Just reading her name should and does make many women teary-eyed as we still mourn the loss of this beloved icon of justice, civil, and women’s rights. As the second woman ever appointed to the Supreme Court, she was labeled “The Notorious RBG” (based on “The Notorious BIG,” a rapper from Brooklyn), a sobriquet she embraced and everyone loved to use. RBG is a 21st century heroine, combining the ideals of Rosa Parks, Susan B. Anthony, and Wonder Woman with a gavel as her lasso of truth, her jabot/ collar serving as her tiara, and her lace gloves her bracelets of submission, deflecting ignorance and sexual discrimination. Born on March 15, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York, RBG earned her B.A. in Government from Cornell University in 1954. She married Martin D. Ginsburg that year, and had their first child, Jane, soon after. Martin was drafted in 1954, serving for two years, before being discharged. The family moved to Massachusetts and they both attended Harvard University. One of only a handful of other women in a class of over 500, RBG became the first female member of the “Harvard Law Review,” setting a precedent for overcoming the odds at an early age. Sadly, her husband Martin required intense treatment due to testicular cancer in 1956. He recovered, (thanks to RBG taking his notes, while attending her own classes and raising their daughter), graduated from law school, and accepted a position in a law firm in New York City. RBG then transferred to Columbia Law School, graduating first in her class in 1959. After clerking for a few years, she taught at Rutgers University Law School from 1962-1972, and at Columbia University from 19721980, when she became the first female tenured professor. President Jimmy Carter appointed RBG to the U.S. Court of Appeals in 1980, and in 1993, President Bill Clinton appointed her to the Supreme Court. In 1971, RBG began litigating and winning cases for 2 | P.O.W.E.R. Magazine
the ACLU at the Supreme Court. She became the first director of the ACLU Women’s Rights Project in 1972, choosing cases that reshaped the law regarding sexual discrimination. Rather than showcasing women’s rights, she chose to use cases which discriminated against men, knowing that it was more likely those cases would be overturned. Each win removed another layer of bigotry and discrimination. It is due to RBG that women have access to their own banking accounts and credit cards, as well as mortgages, since in the mid-70’s women were often denied access to their accounts on the presumption that their husband controlled the family’s (and therefore their wives’) finances. The Equal Credit Opportunity Act of 1974 banned this discrimination, with RBG paving the way. A brilliant litigator, RBG felt that any laws that treated women as different from men made women seem ‘less than.’ This made her fight even harder to have men and women recognized as equal. In 1996, her opinion in US v. Virginia, regarding the Virginia Military Academy (VMI) as the only state supported single sex college in America was instrumental in changing the admission laws and peeling back another layer of sexual discrimination. RBG addressed the VMI corps of cadets in 2018, which included 200 women out of the 1700 student body. This was a direct result of her influence. The legacy left by RBG can be seen any time a woman lawyer walks into a courtroom, a woman doctor walks the halls of a hospital, and any time a woman holds what used to be considered a ‘man’s job’ in today’s society. Though we still have a long way to go towards true equality, it is without a doubt with sincere and justifiable homage that we recognize the righteous Ruth Bader Ginsburg as a beacon of hope.

ELLEN G. FEILER How did you get started in your field/industry? I have always loved the sciences. When I started college, I took a Health Education course with a wonderful and motivating professor. That experience started me down my career path. What are some of the biggest challenges/obstacles you faced in your career? Some of the biggest challenges include the lack of a career ladder (especially for women), being treated differently than male counterparts, and pay scale differences. What do you feel are some of the biggest challenges that women face today? 4 | P.O.W.E.R. Magazine
Women today face many of the same challenges as I did (depending on the career chosen). They are no longer taught “work etiquette.” This can create big problems. What does the word empowerment mean to you? Empowerment is the power given to someone to do something, and the process of becoming stronger and more confident, especially in dealing with one’s life and rights. It becomes more meaningful when you are a catalyst to empowerment. What do you do to escape and recharge, even for a few hours? I am lucky to live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. to the beach. What advice has helped you get to the next level? Throughout my years of work, I have been lucky to have colleagues and trusted friends offer invaluable advice. This includes: “Do the best you can;” “Do not hurt others on the way up the ladder;” “Don’t burn bridges;” and enjoy what you do. What advice would you give to your younger self? Have confidence in yourself. Believe that you are really good at what you do. Treat people well. Help others to see the ‘great’ they have within them. Inspire yourself and others. Reach for the stars.

Her first book, “Amazingly Powerful” was highly anticipated (this was proven by the number of pre-sales she achieved). Her platform of motivation stands on self: self-love, self-care, and self-fulfillment. Angela believes that once that is achieved, only then can one be an amazing asset to others. In her spare time, she enjoys community service, walking, absorbing nature, and bowling. How did you get started in your field/industry? I started in this industry back in 2015, after I experienced an unexpected shift in my life. My previous profession allowed me to connect with people from various backgrounds on different levels. It was there that I discovered my purpose and passion, which is to assist others with realizing that their reality does not define their destiny. What are some of the biggest challenges/obstacles you faced in your career? One of the biggest challenges I have faced has been re-introducing the more grounded, driven, and Christ-centered person that I have become to my family, friends, and former associates. I had to not just let them know, but I also

had to show them what true self-love looks like in real time, all the time. What do you feel are some of the biggest challenges that women face today? Women have so many roles, labels, and responsibilities. One of the biggest challenges is that we oftentimes surrender or bury our power in all of that stuff and tend to forget just how amazingly powerful we are. What does the word empowerment mean to you? Empowerment means helping others succeed through caring and sharing, either in words or deeds. This can encourage someone to be so motivated that they start or continue to move from a negative state to a more positive outcome. P.O.W.E.R. Magazine | 5

Donna A. Horton
What do you do to escape and recharge, even for a few hours? I love the water. To recharge I go sit by the river and meditate. I put my worries on the waves and watch them roll away. Sometimes I sit in my car and listen to music. I love old soul and gospel music. I pray the serenity prayer constantly throughout the day. When this fails to work, I spend time with my family playing, laughing, and just having good old-fashioned fun. Now that we are in the midst of a pandemic, spending time with family is hard and escaping the reality of this life is getting harder than ever. I find myself praying more these days for not only me and my family but for the families that we service. I guess you could say to recharge I simply pray for strength, patience, and compassion. What advice has helped you get to the next level? 6 | P.O.W.E.R. Magazine

Donna is a member of the board of directors for Horton’s Funeral Home and sits on the board of directors of the historic Browns United Methodist Church, in Calvert County.
The best advice and the code that I live by comes from a Kenny Rogers song which says (to paraphrase), “You got to know when to hold them, know when to fold them; know when to walk away, and know when to run.” Also, I am not defined by the mistakes that I have made but by the lessons I have learned. A DJ once said, “Shoot for the moon and if you miss you will still be among the stars.” My mother said to accept people for who they are and what they are and do not be disappointed if that is not who or what you expected. She also said to serve people with your whole heart, for the rewards of that deed are great. What book is on your bedside table right now and why? “The Purpose Driven Life,” by Rick Warren is on my nightstand. This book has helped me to better understand who I am as a person. It
showed me how to forgive myself for the bad choices that I have made. It helps me look beyond me and see others and the effect I might have on their life, and them on mine. Most of all, it has taught me how to be a servant to the people in this business and to the people I meet in life. What advice would you give to your younger self? You’re stronger than you think. The bumps in the road of life will build character. Listen more than you talk when in a group setting; you will learn a lot about people. Love and respect yourself more than the things around you. Someone is always watching so be careful what you allow them to see. Show others the same respect that you want them to show you. Live a life that you can be proud of with few regrets. www.chesapeakehighlands.com

Samantha is responsible for project estimation and bidding, project planning, contracts, and change orders. She serves as the company’s safety supervisor and representative and specializes in hospitals, pharmaceuticals, and commercial building. She earned her B.A. in Business Administration with a concentration in Entrepreneurship from Muhlenberg College and her M.B.A. from Saint Joseph’s University in 2008. She is OSHA 30 Certified and holds other certifications as well. Samantha belongs to the National Association of Women in Construction. In her spare time, she enjoys tennis, golf, and cooking.
How did you get started in your field/industry? I was inspired to enter the construction industry by my father. From a young age I watched him grow his construction company from the ground up. After gaining experience on my own, I chose to start working alongside my father- traversing the new norms of construction. What are some of the biggest challenges/obstacles you faced in your career? One of the biggest challenges I have faced was navigating my way in a predominantly male industry. Breaking through that barrier and being an equal took time. I learned that with knowledge comes respect, and with respect comes the power to create change in the workplace. What do you feel are some of the biggest challenges that women face today? Equal pay for equal work is a problem woman have always faced. I believe lack of self-confidence and the fear of speaking up or speaking out in the workplace is an issue woman need to address. Not doing so only allows for the continuation of stereotypical and socially accepted ‘norms’ that have plagued our ability to grow in the workplace. pucciandassociates.com P.O.W.E.R. Magazine | 7

Donna is a former planning commissioner and lead ambassador of wellness and green for Nassau County. She was voted one of Long Island’s 50 most influential women. Her latest endeavor is a cartoon peace activist named MantraMouse®, who spreads positive messages about love and unity. What led you to become a health and wellness advocate? After I healed from my own ailments and symptoms in my twenties, I was asked by friends and relatives to help them. That sent me on the journey of discovery and self-awareness I have been on ever since. How do food and the environment affect our bodies and emotions? A pill called Prozac contains a tiny amount of chemicals that, when taken daily, will work to balance moods in a person who needs it. Taken by a person who doesn’t need it, though, suicide can result. Now picture all the foods and liquids with chemicals (natural and unnatural) that are put into our bodies each day. How can we not assume they can affect us the same way? What do you feel is one of the most important things we can do to improve our overall wellness? We are energy producing, matter-forming, super-charged, self-healing machines! We just have to believe in what we want to accomplish, and it is already done. Tell us about the process called Positive Manipulation®. It is how we convert our mental, emotional, and physical energy into the most powerful, positive, and pro12 | P.O.W.E.R. Magazine
ductive energy we can muster. We do this so we can maintain balance between our human and spiritual selves. It is like saying no to our ego and yes to our souls. Please fill us in on your new endeavor, MantraMouse®. Being a coach for three decades now, I have come to understand how messages about doing good and being good can be controversial and a bit overwhelming. So, I created MantraMouse to add levity and laughter to some of life’s most important lessons. How did it feel to be voted one of Long Island’s 50 most influential women? It was awesome and humbling. The other 49 women were and are
outstanding. I felt honored to be considered part of such an accomplished group. What is one of your favorite quotes? One of Helen Keller’s favorite quotes from Edward Everett Hale stated, “I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything; but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.” That saying prompted my own favorite reminder: “Being born was our gift; living life is our challenge; being the best we can be is our choice.” What does the word empowerment mean to you? It means that power is embodied in us. Considering we cannot help but walk into the future we are mentally and emotionally preparing for, we need to consistently set ourselves straight regarding the potential we innately carry to create the life we want to live. www.mantramouse.com

How did you get started in your field/industry? I was introduced to this industry by Chris Brown, who used to be the mayor of Hawthorne. This industry has opened up my eyes to a whole different world. What are some of the biggest challenges/obstacles you faced in your career? Don’t let your emotions interfere with business decisions. My mentor said that there’s no money in emotions. When you are passionate about what you do, emotional attachments are bound to come through. What do you feel are some of the biggest challenges that women face today?
It’s difficult for women who are trying to achieve their goals, while being working or single mothers. Often, women don’t have the support they need to succeed. Women are nurturers by nature. A lot of times, they’re so busy taking care of others that they forget to take care of themselves. What does the word empowerment mean to you? Empowerment means that you are a trustworthy and loyal person that will push the next person to be a better version of themselves. Honesty is the best policy no matter how much it hurts. A person will always respect you for being yourself. Getyourpaydaily.weebly.com

How did you get started in your field/industry? After completing medical school in Thailand to fulfill my dad’s wishes, I moved to the U.S. to avoid entanglement with the Vietnam War. After my internship, the internal medicine program was suspended a month before it started. Fortunately, I learned about an opening for a resident in radiation oncology at Johns Hopkins Hospital. I interviewed, got the position, and began my career there. What are some of the biggest challenges/obstacles you faced in your career? It’s a misconception that women aren’t serious about their careers and can’t perform as well as men, especially if they are good looking. www.osceolacancercenter.com

I started as a HR administrator and worked my way up to a HR manager. After over 20 years in the industry, I left due to illness and started my own business that capitalized on my skills and abilities. What are some of the biggest challenges/obstacles you faced in your career? Women in business are simply not treated the same as men. We still have to prove our value before we are trusted with important responsibilities. I have negotiated labor contracts with large labor organizations and still have to prove my worth. What does the word empowerment mean to you? It means the freedom to be who I am and do what I want and can do.
every client leaves the salon looking and feeling their best. She enjoys being with her family, dining out, and retail therapy. How did you get started in your field/ industry? I started back in 2002. I was fresh out of high school and was asked by my parents to go into nails or hairdressing. I immediately said “No” to both thinking I would be terrible at it. Now almost 20 years later I own two salons and am supporting my family doing what I love most. What are some of the biggest challenges/obstacles you faced in your career? My biggest challenge was working with family. Unfortunately, I’ve learned the hard way to never work with friends or family. Keep them separate. What does the word empowerment mean to you? Empowerment means being strong, confident, and having success. When I say success, it does not mean financially. Success means that someone can take care of themself, do anything they’ve wanted to do in life, and be ready for the next challenge ahead of them. Nothing will stand in my way as long as I have the support system I have to make me the person I am today. www.thebeautymarksalon.com

Teaching ended up being a natural fit for me, because it represents so many things I have had a lifelong passion about, such as literacy, learning, child welfare, and educational equity. Public education is the great equalizer in our society, and teachers hold a tremendous power in positively influencing the lives of children academically and socially. I have witnessed the trajectory of a child’s life positively transform because of the efforts of talented, dedicated educators. Being a part of that process has been my life’s work.

Q: Can you give me some pointers on how to network effectively during COVID-19? Fran C.- New York A: Networking is a very important skill to enable you to connect with people who can help you with your career goals. With the social distancing required for COVID-19, it is especially vital to make connections whenever you can. If you belong to an organization like P.O.W.E.R., take advantage of all the opportunities they offer to help you network with other members. Taking part in virtual or socially distanced organizational meetings and networking events whenever possible in your profession and other related professions can give you the opportunity to meet new people and create new contacts. Be sure not to limit yourself to people only in your field. You never know when someone can offer insight or connect you to people who can directly assist you with your career. Be sure to exchange contact information. When you have found a great networking contact, send a follow-up by email or a telephone call within a week’s time frame to solidify the contact. If you do not make a connection right away, keep trying. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Also, don’t look for immediate gratification. It may take a while for a new contact to develop.

How did you get started in your field/industry? As a child I wanted to be of service to my community. My fields of interest included legal and healthcare. I chose pharmacy because I did not know of any women lawyers. I am grateful for that decision. What are some of the biggest challenges/obstacles you faced in your career? The world tends to pick upon the intellectual human beings. As a Black woman of color, the world appears to pick upon me twice as much for that reason alone. How do you achieve work/life balance? Life is 90% attitude. I believe that my work is pretty much a part of my life. I enjoy my work as much as I enjoy my family and friends. I sincerely believe that finding a career that is rewarding to oneself gives one an optimistic view of life. What do you do to escape and recharge, even for a few hours?
My escape and/or recharge button began as a child when my mother asked me to just sit down and read a good book. Even today, picking up a journal, book, or even a good continuing education article tends to put that smile back on my face. I am once again ready for the challenge now before me. What advice has helped you get to the next level? The golden rule has been my template for life and living: Do unto others as you wish others to do unto you. What book is on your bedside table right now and why? My younger brother gave me “The Expositor’s New Testament” to read as a guide upon reading and interpreting Bible verses. During challenging times, one often misinterprets events based upon attitude. An overview of the situation might show two opposing viewpoints. When the positive is challenged, one can seek another unbiased viewpoint from this book.
What does empowerment mean to you? I often liken the world of pharmacy to the term “cutless surgery.” Whom does the community patient come to regarding the correction of a physical or psychological occurrence but the pharmacist, who through their knowledge of clinical pharmacy can offer the proper referral or medication to correct these things without actually entering the amazing human body? I sincerely believe that knowledge is empowerment. The knowledge of dispensing the proper medication to the right patient for the right disease state and the patient’s compliance with a medication regimen is empowering. Teamwork among the provider, the pharmacist, the nurse, the dentist, and the patient is essential. www.consultingwithdrpam.com

HELLO, 2021!

Winter Activities for the New Year by Syndi Reibman
S
o long, farewell, and buh-bye 2020! I can’t be the only one happy to be done with that hot mess of a year. COVID-19 caused us to lose an entire year of socialization and spending holidays with family and friends. We have not been able to travel, endured the great toilet paper and Lysol shortage of the century, and are still afraid to put our figurative toes back in the proverbial waters of life; 2021 couldn’t have come fast enough. Here are some things to do this winter to get ready for the new year. Clutter and Closets Cleaning the house is beneficial in physical and mental ways. Start going through piles of clutter room by room. You really don’t need those old magazines, articles you cut out and meant to mail, restaurant menus, etc. When you have cleared off your tables, start going through your closets. Do you need ten scarves? Is your husband hoarding baseball hats? How many coats do you actually wear? If you haven’t worn something in a year, chances are you aren’t going to wear it. Donate it. Do you have pocketbooks from
32 | P.O.W.E.R. Magazine
ten years ago? Go through them. Check all of your wallets – if they are wearing at the edges or stained, get rid of them. Make sure to go through every pocket- I always find jewelry and money hiding! Those college sweatshirts that you keep for sentimental reasons can go; keep one if you really want the memory. Just because a family member gave you something doesn’t mean you have to keep it. I keep a large hamper in our spare bedroom and throughout the year, toss in anything that no longer fits, is not wanted, or that I just don’t like. There are more people in need now than ever before. Do the right thing and donate. Kitchen You do not need all those mugs in the kitchen– really. Go through
the pantry shelf by shelf. Toss those expired canned goods and try to keep a list of what you have. I know it sounds silly, but it really works. I put up a white board on the inside of my cabinets and keep a running list of what we have with an erasable marker. This keeps me from buying things we already have, wasting money, and keeps the shelves from being cluttered. I did the same thing on the refrigerator door, writing down what entrees and sides were available since my husband and I eat breakfast and lunch at work. This way, things don’t go bad (and we all know if it isn’t right in front, men don’t see!). It’s especially important not to waste food. Don’t forget to check your spices as well. After two years, they should be thrown out. I also wash or replace my shelf liners annually to keep everything clean. Bathroom If you have tiles in the bathroom, take a good look at the grout. You can purchase a good grout cleaner and spend a few nights brightening up the floor (hint- use a power toothbrush from the dollar store). The shower tiles can benefit as well. You can put white vinegar in a baggie,
rubber band the top around the showerhead, and soak it overnight to clear any clogs. Snake the drains as well – better to be proactive than spend money on clogged drains from months of hair buildup. Home Office Many of us are still working from home. Your home office may be especially cluttered this time of year. Make sure to shred all those paid bills and medical statements. Clear off your computer desk and organize your area. You might want to invest in a bookshelf or storage system to keep you better organized. Exercise If you don’t like the idea of regular exercise, find an activity that keeps you moving. Dance to your favorite songs for 10-30 minutes. Clean the ceiling fans. Clean out the basement. Go through boxes in the attic. As easy as it is to come home, have dinner, and plop on the couch for some TV time, it’s much better for you to keep active. Exercise will help keep your energy level up throughout the day, helps you sleep better, and improves your overall mood. Cooking We cook differently in the winter. Try and incorporate leaner proteins and more vegetables into your meals. Find winter fruits that you can use for desserts instead of cookies and high carb sweets. Baked apples with a little cinnamon and a drop of honey are much better for you than a sleeve of Oreos. You can substitute chicken sausage and ground turkey
for high fat pork and beef products. You can also add tons of vegetables into soup which makes for a healthy lunch throughout the week. Look up some crockpot or instant pot recipes to save time. You may even want to do a favorite recipe swap with some friends to keep from getting bored. Activities The winter is a great time to do something different that you don’t usually do in the summer months when life is busy. Some schools are still offering adult education evening programs with COVID-19 restrictions. Most offer evening classes that teach some form of art, whether it be drawing or painting, crafting, including knitting and crocheting, yoga, and even basic computer classes. Your local library may offer similar programs. These are great opportunities to get out of the house, meet new people, and learn a new skill while still practicing social distancing. If nothing is available locally, perhaps you can learn a new skill via YouTube. Think outside the box. Mental Health Many of us suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder. We leave the house in the morning and it’s dark. We get home from work and it’s dark. It’s depressing. Scientifically, when we don’t get enough sunlight, it causes increased levels of melatonin and lower levels of serotonin, which can result in low mood and energy levels, sleep issues, and leaves us craving starchy food. Those winter pounds don’t come from fruits
and vegetables! Keep your home very well lit. Dress in bright colors. Make it a point to do some sort of exercise, whether it be walking up and down the stairs, lifting weights, walking your neighborhood, or mall walking with some friends (being COVID conscious) if you’re in snow territory. Most malls are open early for just this purpose and it’s certainly cheaper than joining a gym. Plus, window shopping is fun, so this is a win-win situation. Reality When it comes time to make those New Year’s resolutions, rather than being unrealistic and overwhelmed, choose one or two attainable goals that you can keep. Try to learn something new. Check in with older family members. Make time for yourself. Write a letter to an old friend. Start a beauty routine. Treat yourself as well as you would your best friend. This year, we need to embrace health, happiness, and live every day as a gift.

himene Van Gundy is a real estate investor and entrepreneur with Outstanding Real Estate Solutions, Inc. and Mobile Home Millions, LLC, who invests in mobile homes and mobile home parks which provide affordable housing to people across the U.S. Upon completing her B.A. magna cum laude in Criminal Justice from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2006, she worked multiple jobs in the corporate world and served as the lead paralegal for several different law firms. After being laid off in 2015, Chimene decided that rather than working for another corporation she would be her own boss. She read the novel “Rich Dad Poor Dad” which became a wakeup call for her and changed her life. Having spent time in and out of the foster care system, no one taught her about money, credit, or budgets. So, after hearing

her husband say, “I believe in you,” she took some real estate education classes, found a mentor and the rest is history. A true entrepreneur, Chimene runs and manages five different companies. She is known as the “The Mobile Home Millionaire” and “Queen of Mobile Homes” because she has fixed, flipped, and wholesaled more than 500 units to date, all in four years. She does business in 11 states and has taken her business international as well, rehabbing mobile homes in Ireland where they are called “holiday homes.” She is a member of W.R.E.N. Chimene serves as a featured writer for Think Realty magazine, where she educates others on the mobile home asset class. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her five children, horseback riding, dancing, musicals, ballet, theater, and animals.

Q&A
with Chimene
What is the one book you recommend our community should read and why? I recommend “The ONE Thing,” which talks about how we all have our own “genius” zone and should improve and refine it. Once done, we can become wealthy using it.
38 | P.O.W.E.R. Magazine
What is the best $100 you recently spent? What did you buy and why? I got a massage. I am all about self-care. This is vital when you are building a business or organization.
What advice would you give your younger self? To not worry about what other people think. It is none of my business what others’ opinions are of me. I will continue to always pursue my dreams. How did you get started in your field or industry? I read “Rich Dad Poor Dad” which changed my perspective on money and assets. I quickly noticed the need for mobile homes and affordable housing. I forged my way through this. What are some of the biggest challenges or obstacles you faced in your industry? Real estate is primarily dominated by men. I am constantly educating others that manufactured housing or mobile homes are not trailer trash. What advice would you give to other women in your field or profession to help them succeed? Stay laser focused and communicate well. If you do this, success will follow. In this area, we beat men hands down. Form relationships because your network is your net worth. How did you get started in selling mobile homes? When I entered the real estate game in 2015, I realized there was a ton of competition. I also discovered it was very much a man’s world. Then, I bought my first mobile home after attending a tax sale and bidding on a mobile home that all the other investors thumbed their nose at. They literally called mobile homes “trailer trash.” Mobile home deals kept falling into my lap and I realized that no one was in that space. I
The word “Impossible” implies “I AM Possible” — Audrey Hepburn
seized the opportunity to stake my flag in this space as a leader. I have never looked back. How has COVID-19 affected the real estate market? The pandemic has decimated some markets. Commercial property has taken a hit and so has residential. Once the mortgage deferments go away, we will continue to see this downward trend. But as in every area of life, you look for the opportunities. Have the sales of mobile homes increased since the pandemic started? Oddly enough as other real estate investors are scrambling, I haven’t had to. Mobile homes are the last “affordable housing” in America, and they are recession-proof. My business has more than tripled this year because everyone needs affordable housing. I am so proud to be in this market. What is involved with successfully renovating and flipping mobile homes? To successfully complete this you need to know three things. The first is: Location, location, location. Is the location where the mobile home park is located in an area where people want to live? The second is: What level of mobile home park are you in? Is it upscale, middle-class, or working-class? The third is knowing your market based upon the above, which will tell you what kind of rehab to do. For example, you wouldn’t want to put granite in a working-class park. That would go in an upscale or middle-class park.
Those are the first three things anyone should consider. What gave you the idea to branch out to Ireland to sell mobile homes? I was on my dream vacation with my husband in Ireland when I made him stop so I could see this mobile home lot. I couldn’t believe they had them there. I crawled underneath one so I could see if there was any difference between theirs and ours in the U.S. In Ireland they call them “holiday homes.” I met with the manager and he was very impressed with my knowledge level. That led to a joint venture with the company there. I have been working in Europe ever since. Even while vacationing I was open to opportunity. With five kids, how do you create balance between your professional life and personal life? When I am with my family, I am with them. When I am at work, I work. I had to learn this the hard way. On weekends, my computer stays at my office and I devote myself to my family. There is nothing that happens on the weekend that can’t wait until the next business day. I love my family very much and everything I do is for them. No success is ever worth it if you lose what you love and cherish the most in the process. When I need to be the boss, I am. However, when I am home, I am mommy and Chad’s wife. I love that the most. Is there a quote that resonates with you and motivates you? If so, what is it?
My favorite quote is from Audrey Hepburn, who said: “Nothing is impossible. The word itself says “I’m Possible.” The other quote is from my mentor and what she told me that I have never forgotten. She said, “It doesn’t matter the cost of your shovel when you are digging for gold.” So many people will slap down several hundred dollars to buy a TV, but they won’t invest in themselves and learn something new. They just listen to the “tell a vision.” That is what television is. No one really thinks about what the word really means. When I broke that word down it was a wake-up-call that I needed to change my life . Where do you see yourself ten years from now? I have fabulous dreams that I am able to manifest in my life. In ten years, I see myself creating movements that change and empower women and that help them build legacies for their families. I see myself holding events and creating housing for others on a global scale. What does the word power mean to you? The word power means the ability I have to be in control of my own destiny and make the life I create. My life has become amazing and I am so grateful to be able to be at this point in my life. I can do what I want when I want to. Life is precious, so you should always show up and create the life of your dreams because no one else will! www.mobilehomemillions.com P.O.W.E.R. Magazine | 39

Pauline is affiliated with the Lost State Book Writer’s Club, the Tennessee Poetry Society, and the National Guild for Hypnotists. In her spare time, she enjoys family activities, photography, writing stories and poetry, and going to the woods and mountains to enjoy the scenery. How did you get started in your field/industry? I’ve had so many things happen which made my friends say, “You should write a book.” I made a list, thinking about who would want to read about my life and who would even believe what I wanted to write about. What are some of the biggest challenges/obstacles you faced in your career?
Author and Photographer The things that have happened to me are hard even for me to believe, let alone to have other people believe. There seems to be a message, guidance, or lessons about life that I feel I have to share, even though they come in strange ways. What do you feel are some of the biggest challenges that women face today? Often, women aren’t strong enough to overcome their fears of not being accepted or overcoming what others might think. I overcame that by thinking, “I don’t care. I can’t please everyone.” The truth is that what others think is their problem. What does the word empowerment mean to you? Empowerment means to forget the level of emotions, manmade views, and thoughts we are taught, and to go within to where the real power from our creator lies. www.paulinepetsel.com

the beach, Broadway shows, and being with her family. Why did you get into the field of real estate? My passion for helping others led me to the real estate industry. I understood the market challenges and concerns of the consumers. I decided to pursue my career and become an expert realtor to service my community. How has COVID-19 affected the real estate market? The real estate market has shifted in both residential and commercial real estate. As a result of COVID-19, there are inconsistencies in our economy. The unemployment rate has consumers growing concerned about the future of their homes and their investments. What are the most important things a person should do before putting a home up for sale? Seek brokers with passion who are knowledgeable about real estate advice. When you
hire an expert, the process of selling your property will be an effective and financially rewarding experience. After all, everyone wants to know that they got a great deal. What advice would you give to other women in your field or profession to help them succeed? No one succeeds alone. Success isn’t for the chosen few. It’s for the few who choose it. It is important to make a commitment for personal and professional growth. You will become stronger when you overcome your challenges and adversity. What does the word empowerment mean to you? It means having the opportunity and knowledge needed to build stronger relationships and having more growth potential. It also gives me the ability to help others along the way. Motivational Speaker, Life Coach, Business Consultant, Author Caring Hearts and Hands LLC CNA Business Solutions

atosha L. Veney is a woman of many hats and talents. Her life’s journey consists of running the daily operations of two home care businesses, CNA Business Solutions, life coaching, consulting, and inspiring others through her words as an author and speaker. Due to her ability to serve the elderly and home care communities effectively and compassionately, one of her home care businesses received the “Best in Newport News” in 2019. As a consultant, Latosha is passionate about teaching new home care business owners the knowledge that she has acquired over the years. She also believes in the importance of individuals reaching their full potential. Through her certified life coaching program and motivational speaking, she provides others with practical tools, strategies, and daily resources to ensure growth when applied. Latosha is the author of “My Quiet Storm.” Her purpose for writing this book was to share an account of the storms she has overcome in her life in hopes of empowering others to quiet their own storms. Latosha received an A.A. in Business Management and Marketing from Strayer University in 2015. When she is not changing the world, she enjoys reading, travel, and creating lasting moments with her family. How did you get started in your field/industry? When I was a young teen, my grandfather was diagnosed with dementia. My siblings and I were taught how to care for him at home. This sparked my interest
and genuine love for helping others. Helping others is my life’s work. Ensuring that the elderly population receives the best care is tied to my destiny. Pushing others to walk in purpose gives me joy. What are some of the biggest challenges/obstacles you faced in your career? The biggest obstacle for me was overcoming my fear of failure. Perfectionism was a difficult trait to break. Over time, I learned to look at failure from a different lens. In one lens, failure can be seen as ‘the end of the world’ or a reflection of our inadequacy. In another lens, failure can be seen as an incredible learning experience. I chose the latter. Every time we fail at something, we must choose to look for the lessons we’re meant to learn. Identifying and learning these lessons is imperative. The lessons elevate us. When learned, they remind of us of the choices that we shouldn’t make again. Failure is an obstacle only if we allow it to be one. What advice would you give to other women in your field or profession to help them succeed? Stay focused. There isn’t a right time. The time is now. The journey will not be easy. There will be disappointments. Learn from your mistakes and find out what you can do differently to prevent these mistakes in the future. Most importantly, smile and truly enjoy what you are doing. If you’re happy doing your job, it will show. What does the word empowerment mean to you? Empowerment is about taking control of your life. It is a continuous process, happening moment by moment. Empowerment is all about choice. What you choose to do DAILY reveals how empowered you are. You are in control of your destiny. You are in charge of you. An empowered individual realizes this truth and daily strives to be a better version of themselves so that they are able to empower the world. www.latoshaveney.com P.O.W.E.R. Magazine | 41

CORNER Donna Martini The Ten Commandments of Divorce The Ten Commandments of Divorce beckons us to change our perception of the divorce process. It attempts to open all eyes and ears to the possibility of a new paradigm we can adopt and follow—one that allows us to come out of our marriage with the same intentions, grace, and dignity as we had entering into it. As Donna Martini takes us on a journey of introspection and forgiveness through the process of Positive Manipulation ®, we learn to transmute negative emotions like fear, anxiety and anger into respect, empathy and amnesty. It is only then, she tells us, that the process of healing can begin. This book is about love and the compassionate energy it carries with it. It promotes accountability and responsibility for the paths we have chosen, as it gently prompts us as parents to lead by example. Each chapter will help you uncover your true potential as it offers the solace and guidance needed to handle even the most difficult aspects of living as a single parent. “You made the decision to marry,” Donna tells us, “and for whatever reason, it didn’t work. Now you made the decision to divorce. For the sake of the kids, let’s make sure it’s done right.”
by Susan Kavaler-Adler The Compulsion to Create: Women Writers and Their Demon Lovers “The Compulsion to Create: Women Writers and Their Demon Lovers” is a fascinating and informative psychological survey of women and the literature they create, especially as reflected by the lives and work of such luminaries as Charlotte Bronte, Emily Bronte, Emily Dickinson, Anais Nin, Sylvia Plath, and Edith Sitwell. The reader is treated to such issues as compulsion versus reparation, developmental mourning and creative-process reparation, creative women and the ‘internal father,’ and the ‘demon-lover’ theme as literary myth and psychodynamic complex. A highly recommended addition to women’s studies, literary studies, and psychological studies supplemental reading lists, “The Compulsion to Create” is original, revealing, insightful, challenging, at times iconoclastic, and always entertaining.

I flew to London to pick it up personally, at the request of my client. The gift had its own first-class seat to ensure it was not damaged. What is one habit that makes you more productive? I work out every morning. It is a positive way to start my day, makes me feel productive, and increases my energy. What do you do to escape and recharge? I am an avid reader so that is a great escape for me. I also love a good pampering spa day. What is the one book that you recommend women should read? One of my favorite books is “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz. It is simple, straight forward, and positive. Living by the four agreements is a powerful way to live your life. What does the word empowerment mean to you? Empowerment means accepting others for who they are without judgement. It is providing education, support, and encouragement for people to learn and grow in their own individual way. I also believe it is empowering to allow people to express their thoughts and be open to all ways of looking at something.

Vernicia Respres Owner | Brushed Studios
H
aving her business skyrocket more than 300% since the COVID-19 pandemic began, Vernicia Respres, a truly inspirational entrepreneur and businesswoman, has taken the creative initiative to help her already booming business, Brushed Studios, grow and thrive in the most dire of times. Vernicia is available to discuss expanding her business, having already booked digital corporate events with industry titans including Amazon and Microsoft, as well as discussing the importance of representation for black women in the business ad entrepreneurial space. Based in Mableton, Georgia, just outside of Atlanta, Vernicia brought Brushed Studios to life in 2018 as a creative outlet for herself and the community. Now strictly virtual due to the pandemic, she took it upon herself to get creative with her new business and offer virtual painting parties for people around the world. Two months after offering the virtual 52 | P.O.W.E.R. Magazine
classes, and through word of mouth with friends and colleagues in the area, her business took off on a national scale. Brushed Studios now offers worldwide shipping so people around the world can order their supplies from Vernicia and book virtual art classes. Having a creative outlet to balance her more corporate day job as director of digital fundraising for Habitat for Humanity, she has found a creative and entrepreneurial balance for herself which has led to her massive success. Growing up with two entrepreneurial parents, Vernicia was exposed to the world of business and its ups and downs at an early age. She also discovered her creative side and love of the arts at a young age which helped shape her into the businesswoman she is today. When she first began her professional career, she was hired as a radio personality at a local station. Vernicia’s naturally shy disposition led her to stray away from being a radio personality and she be-
gan doing web design for the station and other businesses in the area. This transitioned into her working in the nonprofit world. One of her many accolades includes the creation of online fundraising for the American Cancer Society. After working with ACS for many years, an opportunity presented itself at the Carter Center for her to help them transition into the digital age. After working at the Carter Center for five years, Vernicia landed her current day job as the director of digital fundraising at Habitat for Humanity where she helped take their online fundraising from $6 million to $13 million. When Vernicia isn’t busy working at Habitat for Humanity or leading classes and corporate events with Brushed Studios, she can still be found being creative in her home. She recently purchased her dream home in Mableton, Georgia and is hard at work on DIY projects around the house. Vernicia is also a big foodie and loves to cook and entertain.
Why did you decide to create Brushed Studios? I always viewed paint and sip companies as a great vehicle to facilitate art, wine, and socializing. Paint classes have long been my favorite way to unwind – so much so that I felt compelled to start my own spin on a relatively new business. I decided to blend my business and marketing knowledge with my love for all things DIY and creativity and thus, Brushed Studios was born. I wanted to a create a business that was diverse (both in staff and in art selection) and welcoming to people from all walks of life. What gave you the initiative to turn Brushed Studios into virtual painting parties? Unfortunately, the impetus was the pandemic. We were humming along smoothly and approaching our second year in business when the pandemic hit and caused a 100% stop to our momentum. We made the fortunate decision to try virtual as a last-ditch effort (what else did we have to lose?) and it turns out that we pivoted at a time when others were apprehensive. We went virtual within a few weeks of the pandemic starting and have been virtual ever since then. Did you ever dream that you would book digital events with industry titans like Amazon and Microsoft? Never! We are so excited. Being virtual has allowed us to expand in ways that we couldn’t have imagined. We have added several more industry titans to our list, and we are growing rapidly. We are grateful that what started as a family/social event has now evolved to an activity that meets a business need- one that is connecting with and engaging remote employees. We are excited to see where all of these relationships go and try our best to ensure that our business customers are happy. How do you balance your time between your busy position at Habitat
for Humanity and running Brushed Studios? I depend on planning and strong team coordination. I have been at Habitat for quite a while and have built a great team there. Luckily, this art business is relatively simple from an execution standpoint. My team handles a lot of the logistics, including processing orders and shipping. I get to do the extra fun part, which is handling the marketing, teaching the classes, and coming up with creative ideas. Most of our classes are after work, in the evenings, or on weekends. With careful planning and coordination, I make all of it work. What is one business idea that you are willing to share with our readers? No matter what you do in business, find a way to take it virtual and integrate digital aspects. Literally every business can evolve into something new by exploring online options. My best advice, especially in current times, is to think deeply about your area of interest and business model and challenge yourself to integrate or deepen your digital footprint. What does the word power mean to you? Power means channeling all your God-given talents to help execute your purpose. The more you leverage your gifts and experiences to make a positive impact on the world, the more powerful you are. www.brushedstudios.com

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS By Dr. Maria Levada
B
Medical Director, Prism Med Spa
reast cancer is the leading cause of cancer in U.S. women, but is the second leading cause of death from cancer now exceeded by lung cancer (due to smoking). American newborns have a lifetime probability of developing breast cancer of 12%. About 87% of all breast cancers in the U.S. occur in women over the age of 44, with 97% occurring in women over 40. The five-year survival rate for localized breast cancer is now about 98% due to better therapy options and earlier diagnosis by screening mammography.
Risk factors include age (over 65); inherited mutations; first degree relative(s) with breast cancer; pregnancy/ childbirth after age 30; no children; never breastfed; postmenopausal obesity; previous cancer of ovary, uterus, or colon; and alcohol (2-5 drinks daily). A great majority of women (85%) who develop breast cancer have no identifiable risk factor other than age. Every woman must therefore be considered at risk. Hereditary cancers of the breast and ovary are linked to BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations. Female BRCA1/2 mutation carriers have a lifetime breast cancer risk of 40% 66% compared with the U.S. average of 12%. Recommendations for women identified as high risk include clinical breast exams every six months; annual mammogram from age 25; annual MRI and pelvic ultrasound; and removal of ovaries (and tubes and uterus) at the completion of childbearing (no later than age 40). Surgery reduces the risk of ovarian cancer by about 90% and of breast cancer by about 50%. Oral contraception (OC) and breast cancer continues to be an issue in the minds of both patients and clinicians. There is a documented protective effect of higher dose OC on benign breast disease. The largest case control study on OC risk (J Natl Cancer Inst 1981) showed that the risk of breast cancer was not increased in current users or past 54 | P.O.W.E.R. Magazine
users; there was no adverse effect of increasing duration of use or higher doses; and no increase risk in women with family histories of breast cancer. Another large case-control study of women younger than 55 years with breast cancer (WECARE Study Group J ClinOncol 2008) concluded that use of OC’s or postmenopausal hormone therapy either before or after the diagnosis did not increase the risk of the first or recurrent breast cancer. Ultimately, even with the contrasting findings of the Women’s Health Initiative study, women who develop breast cancer while using postmenopausal hormone therapy have a reduced risk of dying from breast cancer compared with never users. Hormone therapy of any type does not alter the 50% reduction in breast cancer for women who undergo removal of their ovaries at a young age because of BRCA1/2 mutations, so that hormone therapy can be used safely for several years to prevent the adverse health and quality of life issues associated with premature and abrupt loss of female hormones.
Breast cancer screening mammography reduces breast cancer mortality because it detects tumors when they are smaller and not palpable. It is the only method that detects clustered microcalcifications that are less than two millimeters in size. Mammography is cost effective over age 65 and has been found to be as beneficial in women over 74 as it is in younger women. Older women need to be reminded that risk continues to increase with increasing age. For women with dense breasts, digital mammography/3D tomography as well as ultrasound screening is indicated. MRI is the most sensitive. Combining MRI with mammography is recommended for women at very high risk for breast cancer, especially younger women. Every woman should be regarded at risk. Health care providers who interact with women have an opportunity and obligation to promote and initiate a program of preventive health care: monthly selfbreast-exams; yearly breast exams at age 35; and annual mammograms after age 40.

Cathy (CaDori) Marshall C
athy Marshall was born in Birmingham, Alabama. The eldest girl of 13 children, she is a natural born leader. Known as CaDori, she coined the name as a combination of her name, her mother Doris, and her late son Dougie. CaDori loves helping others. She is the mother of five and is a registered nurse. She spends a tremendous amount of time giving back to her community. Before becoming a nurse, she was once homeless, jobless, and lived in a shelter. Her children were very young, and she experienced first-hand the struggle of depending on good-hearted people and her faith in God. CaDori wanted to help others in need. In 2017, she founded a nonprofit charity, CaDori Helping Hands, Inc. She donated baby supplies to young mothers and delivered cleaning and personal care items to families who lost everything during hurricane Harvey. She also donated backpacks full of school supplies to children in a local shelter and fed over 100 people displaced by the hurricane at a hotel in Livingston, Texas. In 2018, CaDori Helping Hands, Inc. provided turkeys and hams for Thanksgiving, and gave away winter coats to those in need. In addition to CaDori Helping Hands Inc., CaDori also founded Dougie’s Kids, Inc., a charitable organization dedicated to helping and ensuring the well-being of children across America. It’s named after her oldest son, Bobby Denerio Marshall Brown, affectionately known as “Dougie,” who passed away in 2010 in a motorcycle accident. Dougie adored children and gave helpful advice, mentored, took them to fun places, and supported them by attending games. To date, 56 | P.O.W.E.R. Magazine

Ravioli Soup with Sausage Meatballs by Syndi Reibman Ingredients 2 lb. round or square cheese ravioli (or tortellini) 1 box frozen chopped spinach (16 oz.) (defrost overnight in fridge before making) 8 cups chicken broth 1 lb. Italian or sage sausage (breakfast) without casings 2 eggs beaten Parmesan cheese for topping
Directions In large pot, bring broth to a boil and add ravioli and spinach. Turn down to a simmer. While ravioli are cooking, make small ½” meatballs out of the sausage and gently toss them into the soup. Simmer for additional 20 minutes to make sure meat and ravioli are fully cooked. Beat eggs till frothy in a small bowl. Stir soup in clockwise direction a few times so it starts to move in a circle. Continue stirring and gently tip the eggs in a little at a time, creating egg strings. Ladle into bowls and top with a little grated parmesan cheese. Serve with a big salad.
Ingredients
Crab Seafood Chowder by Syndi Reibman
1 ½ -2 lbs. fake crabmeat 4 cups chicken or seafood broth 2 cups water 1 package creamy seafood soup mix (Maggi brand) 1 can cream of shrimp soup or cream of mushroom if you can’t find shrimp (Campbell’s) 1 cup milk or half n half 2 medium potatoes peeled and diced into ¼” pieces (Yukon Gold) 2 Tbsp. minced dried onion 2 Tbsp. dried parsley ¼ tspn. pepper (opt.) 1 lb. medium peeled shrimp
Directions Bring chicken broth and water to a simmer in a large nonstick pot. Add crabmeat. Bring up to a low simmer again for 15 minutes. When crab is soft and starts to break apart add all the rest of the ingredients. Allow to simmer for an additional 30 minutes, stirring often. If you feel the soup is too thick, add about a cup of water and mix well. Keep stirring often so the bottom doesn’t burn. If adding shrimp, put in and allow to simmer for the last 5 minutes. Before serving, test a piece of potato to make sure it is soft and fully cooked. Serve. I suggest adding 1 cup of water and mixing before you put the leftovers away – the crab soaks up a lot of liquid. Makes 6-8 servings. Keeps about 4 days in fridge.

ore than ever we are living though one of the most stressful times in history. We are locked away from people we love and prevented from doing the things that bring us joy. Add cold, winter weather on top of it, and we are bound to feel the effect of emotional and physical stress. In order to stay healthy and beautiful, we need to practice daily routines of destressing by eating a healthy diet, getting some sort of exercise, and keeping a positive mental state to stave off the grips of stress and anxiety. This is easier said than done, however just taking one small step in the right direction will ignite the momentum to feeling better. And as we all know when you feel good you look good. You begin to feel lighter, you smile more, your eyes are brighter, and you walk taller with more confidence; all very beautiful things.
If you’re not sure where to begin, here are my top six tips for beginning the de-stressing process:
1
Breathe
The basis of our existence is breathing. We do it subconsciously every second. However, consciously focusing on breathing is the greatest way to reduce stress. Start in the morning when you wake, midday, and then in the evening when you go to bed. Sit or lie in a comfortable position and rest your hand on your belly below your ribs. Take a deep 60 | P.O.W.E.R. Magazine
breath in through your nose feeling your hand rise on your belly, then breathe out through your pursed lips. Do this 5-10 times. You can feel your muscles relax as you exhale.
2
Stretch
then down to your toes immediately relieves the built-up tension in your spine and body. Start slow, build up, and stay with it.
3
Sleep
A good night’s sleep is the single While we should all be getting most important thing you can do some sort of exercise into our daily for not only managing stress, but routine, stretching is not only a good for your overall health. Get yourself on a good, consistent sleep schedule way to start, but really important to relieve stress. Turn off all blue light and screens an hour before Simply stretching to the ceiling and
Feel Good, You Look Good bed. Keep your room dark and cool and block out any disturbing noises with white noise. If you have trouble falling asleep, try a sleep app such as Calm or Insight Timer. If you must keep your phone in your bedroom, keep it on airplane mode to shut down the transceiver and prevent radiation which can unbalance your cardiac rhythm and unbalance your biological clock.
4
Drink Water
I learned how, it changed my life. Here’s the important thing to knowit’s not about a right way or a wrong way or doing it perfectly. Meditation can be done by anyone anywhere. Start slow, allowing yourself 5-10 minutes, get some guidance on-line or with an app, try different mantras, and set your intentions for all being well. Sit comfortably, set your intention, close your eyes, and listen to your breath. As thoughts pop in, acknowledge them, then let them go and return to silence. Try this after your breathing exercises and remember that it takes a while as it’s only natural for the mind to reel, so be patient.
6
Every wellness article, book or podcast will mention how drinking water is key for good health. As a beauty specialist, I can tell you it is key to glowing skin. We all know this, and yet so many of us, me included, don’t drink enough every day. Here’s another important nugget: having good hydration is key to managing stress because it helps our vital organs function better and it also helps us sleep better. Our channels become blocked when we are dehydrated, and everything is off-balance. When we are dehydrated, we begin to feel the effects of stress even more. Keep track of your water consumption and add a couple of drops of citrus to give it some taste. However you get it down, drink at least ten glasses of water each and every day.
5
Meditate
I can’t mention this enough. Perhaps because it was something I never thought I could do, and once
Gratitude Journal
Keeping a gratitude journal sounds like a lot of work, but I can assure you it is one of the most useful tools for mental health and managing stress. Focusing on writing down all the things you’re grateful for allows you to immediately feel better. It’s about writing the narrative of the good, the gifts, your blessings, and your accomplishments. It keeps us from spinning in a downward spiral of worry, despair, and grief. We all have blessings. Focusing on them will help us align with more positive things in our lives. What could be better than that? As part of my absolute belief and passion for balance and inner beauty, I invite you to join me on Instagram @luicenesalomone. Nyalla D. Schwartz Founder, Mom and Son, Inc. | Owner, Financial Fitness Education Inc.
N
yalla D. Schwartz is starting a new nonprofit, called Mom and Son, Inc. Its mission is to bring salvation, hope, and education to children, and to bring the dreams of local youth to fruition. Nyalla feels that our nation’s children have lost their quality of life. Many are suffering from depression and hopelessness without being able to communicate effectively during this pandemic. Children and adolescents are committing suicide for reasons they don’t even understand- all they know is that loneliness hurts, isolation is beyond comprehension, and their hearts and lives are irrevocably broken. Mom and Son, Inc. has mentors for every age group. They provide love and emotional support to children and help them reach their potential in whatever platform they seek. The nonprofit will also be putting on K-pop festivals at Universal CityWalk, which will be free to the public, and will be streamed live in all social media networks. Currently, they are reaching out to all who want to participate and sponsor events. Nyalla is also the owner of Financial Fitness Education Inc. With over 25 years’ experience, she is an expert on educating clients regarding their finances through personal finance and debt management courses. She earned a M.B.A. from Pacific Southern University in 1986. She is a member of I.W.L.A. Among her many career highlights, Nyalla was responsible for securing contracts with Central Michigan University to endorse the personal finance and debt management courses. She secured contracts with Bridgewater Interiors, Inc. in Michigan, and Alabama, and she secured contracts with
the Michigan Housing Development Authorities to offer the personal finance and debt management course with Freddie Mac and Fifth Third Bank for first time home buyers. Nyalla secured contracts with various automotive companies both in California and Michigan. She has certified over 200 qualified individuals to teach the personal finance and debt management course at all entry levels. She developed various deliveries of the personal finance and debt management course ranging from nine hours to 72 hours to include E-learning and interactive CDROMs both in Spanish and English. Additionally, Nyalla teaches at risk
high school students in the Detroit public schools. She writes syllabi for community colleges and is the author of the “Financial Fitness” Handbook. She manages and is a mentor to artists, athletes, and business professionals to help them reach their fullest potential. Nyalla advises and counsels clients regarding their career in the entertainment industry for the purpose of developing and enhancing their artistic value. In 2005, she received the National Leadership Award from the Business Advisory Council- Honorary Chairman Business Advisory Council in Washington, DC. In 2010 she was recognized by Cambridge Who’s Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership, and excellence in business management. Currently, Nyalla is fundraising for Save the Children. In her spare time, she enjoys her grandchildren, travel, and mentoring children.
How did you get started in your field/industry? I, like many, had financial and medical challenges in my past which caused me to file a Chapter 7 bankruptcy over 25 years ago. Unbeknownst to me, I could have avoided the bankruptcy proceeding which affected my credit for the next ten years. After over 300 surgeries, massive medical bills, and credit card debt, I began researching the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and Fair Debt Collection Practicing Act. I had never been taught anything about credit and debt or even how to balance a checking account. The more I learned, the more I wanted to fight the Credit Reporting Agencies (CRA’s) and debt collectors. Once I learned all their tactics of fear and threats, I began to challenge them. I used myself as a test case. P.O.W.E.R. Magazine | 71
