Music is in the air this month The start of summer means great concerts of all genres
As we began putting together this month’s issue, we couldn’t help but notice not just the number of concerts happening, but the quality of the acts that are making their way through Prague. First off, there’s the Metronome Festival, which never fails to disappoint. This year we can’t wait to see the diverse roster of performers including Liam Gallagher and Morcheeba and Primal Scream. By the way, if you have Metronome tickets and you’d like to get the VIP experience, visit our Facebook page and sign up to win a pair of upgrades. Big name acts rolling through this month include Maroon 5 on June 5, and the almost original lineup of Smashing Pumpkins (minus bassist D’Arcy Wretzky) playing the next day on June 6. Later in the month on June 19, KISS performs in Prague on

what they say is “the end of the road” (and your last chance to see them on tour). ZZ Top will be opening. Speaking of veteran acts, this month also brings the Beach Boys on June 19, Phil Collins on June 25, and Kool and the Gang on June 24. Backstreet Boys play on June 22, and guitar legend and Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler plays on June 26. It’s also month of concerts for all the metal fans, starting off with Alice in Chains on June 3, Tool on June 4, Godsmack on June 10, and Slipknot on June 11. There’s also Def Leopard on June 17, Disturbed on June 24, Slayer on June 25 and everybody’s favorite drinkin’ and singin’ band Dropkick Murphys on June 11. We’d recommend getting a hearing test at the end of the month to
make sure you didn’t damage anything. If the concerts leave your bank account high and dry, there’s also some great free things to do this month including Prague Museum Night on June 8, which give you free access to some of Prague’s best museums, and Czech Philharmonic’s Open Air Concert on June 19. It’s not all concerts this month. We also sit down with Prague’s Mayor Zdeněk Hřib, find out about some pretty amazing day camp and residential camps for the kids, go to cooking school at Cocina Rivero, and learn about Traditional Chinese Medicine at Liangeste. If you have story ideas, you can always email us at editor@pragueresident.com. Happy June, and we look forward to talking to you next month!

Metronome Festival 2019
Prague's favorite music festival returns with over 40 amazing shows in two days. Prague is one of the world’s great tourist destinations with countless historic sights and landmarks. But during one weekend each summer, one of the world’s most beautiful cities also plays home to a large music festival featuring global stars and up-and-coming progressive acts. The fourth-annual Metronome Festival Prague will take place on June 21-22 this year at the Výstavištěexhibition grounds with headliners Liam Gallagher, Kraftwerk, Primal Scream, and Morcheeba. Metronome Festival Prague is the first large pop/ rock festival to take place in the Czech capital. It strives to provide a cross-section of various genres and musical epochs, focusing on the hottest new sounds and the best of the past. But the organizers don’t just provide an eclectic line-up that attracts a wide range of concert-goers, but also an exceptional level of comfort at the open-air and covered stages with sufficient seating; a broad selection of refreshments; high-capacity Wi-Fi; and a cashless payment system that offers secure transactions, shorter lines, and faster service. In the past, Metronome Festival Prague has featured stars such as Iggy Pop, Foals, Sting, Chemical Brothers, Crystal Fighters, Kasabian, John Cale, David Byrne, and Massive Attack, with over 17,000 people attending last year’s edition. Prague’s Výstaviště exhibition ground and its ornate art deco Průmyslový palác (Industrial Palace) is part of the extended heart of the city. The festival grounds are close to the National Gallery, famous for its modern art collection; as well as the vast Prague Zoo with its near-century of history. The grounds themselves border Stromovka (the Royal Game Preserve), which happens to be the largest park in the Czech capital. It’s only a few minutes by public transportation to Prague’s most famous landmarks, including Prague Castle, the Charles Bridge, Wenceslas and Old Town
Squares, the art deco Vltava embankment, or the city’s world-famous modern architecture. The area just outside Prague offers a number of attractions as well, including the medieval castles of Karlštejn and Křivoklát; or Konopiště, the residence of the assassinated heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. There are four headliners of this year’s Metronome Festival Prague, and each will present an extra-long setlist specifically selected for the event. British singer Liam Gallagher, the former frontman of 1990s Britpop phenomenon Oasis, will present his greatest hits along with songs from his newest release. German electronica legends Kraftwerk will perform their extraordinarily successful 3D multimedia show. In order to ensure the best possible viewing experience, all guests will receive special 3D glasses for this performance. Primal Scream and Morcheeba are set to offer a selection of their biggest hits from their illustrious careers tailored especially for Metronome Festival Prague. Besides the headliners, musicians from more alternative genres will also perform, including virtuoso guitarist, singer, and songwriter Anna Calvi; dance music giant Danny Howard; Iceland’s top female guerrilla hip-hop group Reykjavíkurdætur; and Birtish neo-soul group Jungle. The domestic music scene will also be well-represented. Pražský výběr, a new wave legends and one of the most popular Czech bands in history, will perform. One of the Metronome Festival Prague’s highlights will be a cross-generational concert by Czech female singers dubbed Hlasy svobody (Voices of Freedom), which will a commemoration of the 30 years since the Velvet Revolution and the fall of communism. This momentous anniversary will be a thread throughout Metronome Festival Prague’s program this year.

Cooking with Class
Cocina Rivero's cooking classes offer up a filling way to spend an evening By Riley Keefe When Emmanuel Rivero moved from Mexico City to Prague 14 years ago, cooking was simply a hobby for him. The self-proclaimed foodie would host dinner parties for friends and cook dishes from a variety of cuisines, from Mexican to Vietnamese, but only when he wasn’t working at his office job. Prior to Cocina Rivero’s inception, Rivero worked as a hospitality education travel agent for an international studies program. Even when he started working in other cooking classes, it was only as a small side project from his full-time work. Rivero worked at other cooking studios in Prague but felt like something was missing as it wasn’t his kitchen. His friends soon had an idea to put his talent for cooking to better use: They advised him to open up his own cooking school. “So, with a couple of friends, we put some money together and we found this place and we opened this place,” Rivero said. Once Cocina Rivero had finally opened in February 2011, Rivero taught mostly Mexican cooking classes as it was his specialty. Being from Mexico City, Rivero brought his favorite Mexican dishes to the table once the kitchen opened. But in such a major tourist destination as Prague, with people from all over the world coming to visit, Rivero wanted to diversify the school’s offerings. “It’s very compact but at the same time it has a lot of variety, it’s very cosmopolitan,” Rivero said of the city. “[There are] a lot of nationalities living here, people from all over the world. So, it gives the city a special dynamic.” To capitalize on these eclectic tastes, Rivero
invited guest chefs and lecturers to share their knowledge of other cuisines as well. Chefs came from far and wide, teaching courses focusing on steak, sushi and a laundry list of other dishes. What started as a duo grew into a team of 10 chefs teaching classes unique to different styles of food. A few members of the team are Czech natives, specializing in their host countries cuisine as well as various other European dishes. Other chefs like Sofia Smith and Selma come from the U.K and Turkey, diversifying the kitchen for a richer experience. It’s doesn’t get any more authentic than having chefs from their respective countries teach people about their native cuisine. With the addition of more chefs Cocina Rivero offers 11 courses, all with their own unique theme. Take Flavors of the Middle East with Miro Misutka and learn how to make hummus and small tapas dishes. Or try your hand at a Sushi rolling workshop with Jaroslav Kratochvil to create sashimi and delicious Gyoza Dumplings. Rivero saw it as his mission to expose people to types of food still waiting to be discovered in Prague. “As long as someone recommends it -- someone that they know and trust -- then they’ll go for it,” Rivero said of the locals. “It happens with cuisines as well, once they try [it], then they go for it. They trust Italian food, steaks, you know?”. Something as popular as Italian food has a loyal and consistent following with hundreds hungry for pasta and pizza every day, but Rivero wanted them to open up to more than one style of food. In one of his efforts to expand Prague’s palate, his kitchen offered an Indian cooking course, for
example, when Indian food was all but foreign to Czechs. “Nobody knew was marsala was,” Rivero said. “The same with Thai food -- they didn’t like it.” On top of that, Prague’s restaurant scene had improved over the last eight years offering more variety, expanding the cities pallet. Stores started offering products pertaining to certain cuisines as the city adopted a foodie-mindset. People have branched out more and more, whether it be chefs opening restaurants or people shopping for groceries. Even at restaurants too, more and more international courses were popping up left and right. Looking to inspire people to try new foods, Rivero was determined to make cooking an enjoyable (and delicious!) activity for everyone, but especially for those who don’t like cooking. But his level of inspiration reaches far beyond the kitchen, it reaches all over the city. “My interest is to inspire [people] to go out and try more food, they ask me for recommendations and nice restaurants,” Rivero said. Regardless of your cooking interest and ability, Cocina Rivero welcomes amateur cooks and cooking enthusiasts alike for a once-in-a-lifetime experience cooking some of the best dishes from countries all over the world. From classics to more adventurous foods, Cocina Rivero has a variety of daily classes for people of all ages. (We recommend the Mexican course called “Ole Ole Guacamole.”) “So, I just recommend what I like, some recommendations on where you can try certain foods. And I think it helps, because the community of foodies is growing and growing.” June 2019 | PRAGUE RESIDENT

News on the move
A “stolen” tram, a buried jet fighter and an unintentionally suggestive lollipop were among the bizarre occurrences making Czech headlines last month
Suck it and see By Samuel Beckwith Transportation was the leitmotif running through many of May’s weirder Czech news stories. The sudden appearance of a Prague tram alongside the D1 highway near Čestlice, Central Bohemia created a social media frenzy on May 14. As speculation raged over the tram’s origin, police investigated whether the vehicle—a 1995 ČKD DS T6A5, apparently—had been stolen from the city’s public transport authority. Rather like the Game of Thrones finale, the speculation turned out to be a lot more fun than the resolution, which played out like a particularly depressing episode of Thomas & Friends. Within a few hours of its appearance, the tram was targeted first by thieves and then by taggers. And after a couple of days, journalists established that a company called Domo Development had bought the vehicle legitimately, for 351,000 crowns. Domo wants to build a vast commercial area on the Čestlice site, against the wishes of many residents, and presumably intends to use the tram to promote the project. Another vehicle enjoying an unexpected second act was a MiG-21 fighter, buried by British artist Roger Hiorns, which was recently “exhumed”. The
Make war not love
Moving away from transport (but not necessarily pink lollipops), the month’s craziest story was a fight between Czech porn stars Silvia Dellai and Karolína “Daisy Lee” Urbanová in the VIP area of the Old Town’s Atelier Club. Accounts of the incident vary wildly but, depending on which adult performer you believe, either Dellai and her friends launched an unexpected attack on Urbanová, kicking and
Turner Prize-nominated sculptor had originally laid the Soviet jet to rest in 2017, next to an EU-funded laser research center in Dolní Břežany, on Prague’s southern outskirts. The mock funeral, designed to symbolize the passing of technological eras (or something), was one of a series of plane burials Hiorns is carrying out around the world. According to a Novinky.cz’s May 18 report, the plane was only supposed to be buried for a year. “Why they came to dig it up now, I don’t know,” Dolní Břežany’s deputy mayor Lubomír Havel told the website. “The village wasn’t involved in the event. The land belongs to the physics institute.” PraguePig.com, however, has noticed that the British Embassy is holding an event in Dolní Břežany on June 15. Could Roger’s MiG be making a guest appearance? The speed of train travel between provincial cities Liberec and Pardubice is somewhat less than supersonic, according to Zdopravy.cz. The specialist transportation website dug up old train timetables, kept at Prague’s postal museum, showing that the current Liberec-Pardubice service is now nine minutes slower than it was in 1938, when a steam engine ran the route. Before World War II, the 178-kilometer journey took 2 hours, 43 minutes, compared to 2 hours, 52 minutes today.
punching her several times, or Dellai (acting alone) merely slapped Urbanová after being verbally abused and shoved. According to Blesk, who gave this momentous story the extensive coverage it deserves, Dellai and Urbanová were previously friends but had fallen out after Urbanová claimed Dellai was a methamphetamine user.
May wasn’t a glorious month for České dráhy. The rail operator also endured ridicule when a photo of one of the company’s new promotional lollipops went viral shortly after appearing on Žijeme Rychnovem, a local Facebook page in Rychnov nad Kněžnou, Hradec Králové Region. The pink lolly is supposedly leaf-shaped but bears an uncanny resemblance to a rather intimate part of female anatomy. “I have the feeling that this is probably more interesting for daddy than it is for the children,” noted the original post. Brno’s transport troubles also provided entertainment after a trolleybus broke down in the second city. Rather than wait for a replacement, a handful of passengers got out and pushed the wire-guided electric bus to its destination. According to Blesk, Brno’s transport authority rewarded their efforts with free lollipops—presumably ones less provocatively shaped than the České dráhy equivalent. This wave of weird stories began with a traffic accident so bizarre it could have been taken from a Nicolas Cage movie: a bus transporting prisoners bursts into flames after colliding with a truck carrying two historical military tanks. Tragically, the incident, which took place May 3 on Prague’s ring road, claimed the life of 23-year-old prison officer Filip Suchý, a promising footballer with fourthdivision SK Kladno. RESTAURANT OPENINGS
Additional locations for some familiar names... Meat Vandals On Myslikova at Spalena. Open in late June, early July. We've never had a bad meal at Meat Vandals. The only thing we could ever really complain about was that sometimes we'd like to sit down and chill and enjoy their food inside, as opposed to having it from their walk-up space at Kotva or Manifesto. Problem solved. The Meat Vandals team is currently doing the build out on a new restaurant at the corner of Myslikova and Spalena, just across from Gentleman Brothers Barbers.
Oh Deer Bakery Cali Brothers
At Narodni Trida, next to Starbucks
Glenn Spicker's and Scott Kelly's California themed venture launched earlier this month in Holešovice. Cali Brothers taunts diners with dry aged steaks, scallops and oysters paired with a West Calfornia menu and great wines and cocktails in an informal non-boughie setting. Our recommendation: Deep Fried Alvacados off the bar menu, the Cob salad topped with hot house smoked chicken breast, or go all out with the 1200 gram Dry Aged Ribeye bone-in steak. We'd recommend making a reservation.
Opening in late June. From their very first crobliha (or cronut) in 2017, Oh Deer Bakery has been a popular place, often selling out within an hour or two of opening. Within a year, they were looking for an expanded spot to up their production. Now they're opening a second location on Purkyňova across from Quadrio and next to the Starbucks. The new location looks to have more seating, and the owner tells us they'll be serving amazing coffee from the newly opened CandyCane Roastery. We see mornings of salty caramel nutella croblihas in our future.

Punčochář says his aim with Restaurant U Matěje is good Czech food that's not small portions on a large plate, but rather a feast in the middle of the table. The interior is stunning as well. Damn near impossible to get in these days, so make a reseravation.
Dukelských Hrdinů 48, 170 00 Praha 7 +420 731 655 851 We love authentic street tacos. And who better to serve them up than the guys from Las Adelitas? This month they open the doors on their new quick street food spot just off of Namesti Miru. This isn't the first time you may have heard of La Taquería - You might remember Las Adelitas proved the concept previously at Stalin Containall.

Chinese Medicine in Prague
With The World Health Orgazination now recognizing Traditional Chinese Medicine, business at Prague's Liangtse Wellness is booming By Bridie O'Connell Located in Prague’s Florenc district, Liangtse Wellness and Massage stands apart from the thousands of massage shops that line the city’s most touristy streets. While you can get a cheap massage nearly anywhere in the city, Liangtse is the only place in Prague that offers Traditional Chinese Medicine. Jenny Li, part of the ownership team, pours tea over a traditional Chinese tea table while explaining the benefits of drinking white tea in the morning. Before and after receiving treatments at Liangtse, clients can drink as much tea as they would like, which creates both a social and relaxing environment, said Li. “We wanted to help people improve their health,” said Li. “It’s not just about relaxing, it’s about the experience.” Traditional Chinese Medicine, based on 2,500 years of research and practice, includes herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage, and dietary therapy. One of the core principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on meridians, or areas of energy within the body that can become blocked by stress. Clearing blockages in meridians, said Li, can help resolve conflicts in vital organs in the body. The meridian system, which has been studied and used in China for thousands of years, is based on the idea that the human body contains life-energy flowing through different pathways referred to as “qi” flows. These energy channels are connected to different organs and other internal components of the body. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, there are 12 principal meridians: lung, heart, pericardium, large intestine, small intestine, triple burner, spleen, kidney, liver, stomach, bladder, and gallbladder. When one of these 12 organs is experiencing disfunction for a reason such as stress or illness, it can be cleared with Traditional Chinese Medicinal techniques. When asked what sets Liangtse apart from other massage options in the city, Li noted that the China Liangtse Group is the first and largest natural therapy institute in China that is recognized by China’s National Ministry of Health. Through this research institute, Liangtse develops and practices all of their services, testing their effectiveness before the service is provided to clients. Each therapist at Liangtse is highly trained in all the massage techniques the brand offers, said Li. The therapy center offers cupping, multiple types of Chinese massage, hot stone therapy, and foot reflexology. Foot reflexology is one of Liangtse’s unique offerings, not found many places elsewhere in Prague. Foot reflexology has been practiced in
China for thousands of years, using designated pressure points on the feet to resolve issues in key bodily organs. Foot reflexology is said to improve blood circulation, improve energy levels, strengthen the immune system, and relieve stress. Similar reflexology points found in the hands can calm anxiety, relieve headaches, and reduce overall stress. Though Chinese and Thai massage utilize similar principles including acupressure points, Li said Chinese and Thai massage are “very different.” Thai massage focuses on stretching and relaxing the muscles, with massage therapists using their hands, knees, elbows, and feet to move a client through various yoga and stretching positions to diffuse tension and improve flexibility. Chinese massage digs a little deeper, also paying attention to the body’s internal energy flow, using herbs and massage techniques to clear meridians and improve a person’s total health. The Thai massage spots tourists often see in Prague are located on busy streets with huge windows and open doors, with beds side by side. At Liangtse, clients have a more comfortable and relaxed experience, as passerby on the street cannot peep in the windows. Neither massage technique involves using oil, and clients remain clothed. The center’s best selling massage, the Royal Tuina, lasts for 90 minutes and costs 2,000 crowns, about 87 USD. Recommended for improving circulation and reducing joint pain, the 1250 crown massage targets blockages in the body’s meridians. In China, Li explained, people visit a massage therapist up to twice a week. Instead of getting a
massage to resolve pain, the Chinese mindset is to prevent issues from arising in the body, encouraging people to visit a massage therapist before they experience pain or discomfort. Chinese massage centers also host business meetings or gatherings for friends, and massage centers are seen as places groups can gather for social events and receive massage therapy treatments together. The Liangtse brand, first started in China in 1997, opened their Prague location in June 2018. Liangtse has over 300 locations all over the world, including in Germany, United Kingdom, Finland, Holland, Canda, and the United States. In the Prague location, each room within Liangtse is decorated in a unique style, representing both modern Chinese trends and Chinese symbolism. With repeat clients, Li says, the center is able to switch which rooms clients receive massage treatments in, making the experience unique even for repeat visitors. “We are the only Chinese massage center in Prague that is providing high quality service,” said Li. Liangtse’s VIP program for loyal clients encourages people to come more often, receive more services, and get birthday offers, as well as save money on services.

Antonín Dvořák’s two most successful operas, “The Devil and Kate”, and “Rusalka”, are based on fairy-tale motifs. Blending folk and humor with lyrical and fantasy elements is one of the typical (and still very popular) traits of Czech dramatic creation. The theme of this charming fairy-tale opera is taken over from Božena Němcová’s folk tale of the same name about the brazen and fearless Kate, the wily shepherd Jirka and the duped devil Marbuel. The Pirate Mayor
Zdeněk Hřib and his Pirate Party offer up progressive ideas for Prague By Riley Keefe The game of politics has long been played by promising the people change, eliminating waste and the ability to remove bureaucracy and fix broken things. Mayor Zdeněk Hřib isn't a career politician. But he's also no stranger to fixing broken things. Hřib was once on the medical path, studying medicine at Charles University, where he became familiar with the ins and outs of the Czech healthcare system. But soon he began to notice flaws in the system. He felt his best contribution would be to help reform the system and eliminate these flaw through digitalization. Little did he know, his simple desire to “fix the system” would eventually lead him to a larger scope, and the mayor’s desk. Since assuming office in November, the 38-year-old has taken the Czech political system by storm with an ambitious, progressive approach to improve Prague’s quality of living, one bill at a time. Hřib joined the Czech Pirate Party in 2013; the anti-establishment party runs on a political platform focused on government transparency and safeguarding digital rights and civil liberties, something that was appealing to Hřib. And the group’s rapid growth from conception to becoming the third largest party represented in the Chamber of Deputies in ten short years shows it is a force to be reckoned with. Since 2012, Hřib was the founder and director of a non-profit group with a goal to provide consumer protection for customers and efficiency assessment for healthcare providers. Throughout his involvement with the Czech Pirate Party, Hřib had acted as its resident healthcare expert, offering insight to fellow party members on how to tackle issues related to the subject. Today, one of his goals in office is to digitize healthcare in the Czech Republic. “[It has] a good foundation, but [is] lacking in the details to improve,” Hřib said of the current Czech healthcare system. The benefits of converting written health records to a digital form, according to Hřib, are increased organization and coordination between medical professionals and patients, as well as greater convenience in accessing health records and acquiring prescription medications. But Hřib’s constituents may not be easy to win over. With things like the Facebook data breach in April, Czechs have been skeptical of a complete migration to having everything digitized. Despite fears of a Big Brother-like surveillance on patients’ medical information and records, though, Hřib believes digitization is imperative to improve the
Czech Republic’s healthcare system. He also has his sights set on a “prescription project” that seeks to increase the level of convenience concerning accessibility to healthcare records, prescription medicine, etc.. Hřib’s passion for improving healthcare presented unique challenges during his transition to mayoral office, in which he must oversee the city as a whole and so cannot devote as much time to healthcare alone. “Yes, I spent a lot of time with healthcare [then],” Hřib said. “I don’t have time for it [now] as much as I did before. Now it’s about the larger picture.” Hřib says the adjustment period to the mayor’s life took about three months. Balancing family life with his wife and three daughters and working as mayor in a city of more than one million people is no easy feat. “I’m definitely tired by the end of the day,” he said. “I mean, we survived our first collation crisis, so that’s a step in the right direction.” Hřib’s political agenda also focuses on the promotion of things like artificial intelligence with projects like Prague.AI, and also public
participation for both citizens and expats to help fight issues like climate change. “We’re planning things that allow citizen participation, we gather data on public participation based on polls and referendums.” Public participation isn’t just limited to public polls conducted by the Czech government, though. Hřib says there is room for community engagement in efforts to make Prague more environmentally friendly, for example. “We have set forward an initiative to plant one million trees in Prague to help combat climate change,” he said. “Trees make the city cooler quieter and less dusty and help fight Prague’s smog issues.” Hřib’s party has also been quick to move on a few issues straight out of the gate, notably pushing forward the "three hours to get your money back" currency exchange law to protect tourists and revoking leases on currency exchange offices which were located in city owned properties. Hřib’s approach to his new mayoral position is progressive to say the least, as he looks to enhance the quality of living for Prague’s people and setting. We're looking forward to it. BY Bektash Musa Kafka (1991) "Kafka" is a 1991 French-American mystery thriller film directed by Steven Soderbergh. Ostensibly a biopic, based on the life of Franz Kafka, the film blurs the lines between fact and Kafka's fiction (most notably The Castle and The Trial), creating a Kafkaesque atmosphere. It was written by Lem Dobbs, and stars Jeremy Irons in the title role, with Theresa Russell, Ian Holm, Jeroen KrabbĂŠ, Joel Grey, Armin Mueller-Stahl, and Alec Guinness. 38
PRAGUE RESIDENT | June 2019
Released after Soderbergh's critically acclaimed debut Sex, Lies, and Videotape it was the first of what would be a series of low-budget box-office disappointments. It has since become a cult film, being compared to Terry Gilliam's Brazil and David Cronenberg's Naked Lunch. Set in the city of Prague in 1919, Kafka tells the tale of an insurance clerk who gets involved with an underground group after one of his co-workers is murdered. The underground group, responsible for bombings all over town, attempts to thwart a secret organization that controls the major events
in society. He eventually penetrates the secret organization in order to confront them. In a 2013 interview with Vulture, Soderbergh stated that the rights to the film had reverted to him and executive producer Paul Rassam, and that work had begun on a "completely different" version of the movie.[2] Soderbergh reported that he and Lem Dobbs did some rewriting, inserts were shot during the making of Side Effects, and he plans to dub the film into German and release both the original and new version together.
