Messe Dusseldorf has established alternate dates for two of its events - Beauty Dusseldorf and Top Hair - Die Messe Dusseldorf, which had been postponed earlier in wake of the Coronavirus. Due to travel restrictions, event postponements etc. businesses have suffered and there have also been reports about raw material shortage in many industries. Stock exchanges have been volatile and global economy may be precariously positioned for a loss of millions. It is the time for the global community to contribute collective efforts to contain the spread of the disease to save precious human lives and livelihoods. The largest industry event that is eagerly awaited by the Printing fraternity is drupa. The 2020 edition scheduled for June will showcase breakthrough technologies at Dusseldorf, Germany. Heidelberg brings cost and production efficiencies for Sain Packaging The brand new Heidelberg CS 92 brings savings, quality improvements and capacity expansion for this Pharma printer and converter of Rai, Sonepat. Mr. Sachin Gupta, founder of Sain Packaging started with Printing after an over a decade long career as government contractor from 1992 to 2004. His father too, who worked in the Delhi Municipal Corporation, had little association with the Printing industry. According to Sachin, it was mostly due to his ambition, hard work and blessings of the Almighty, that he has written his own success story though starting from rather humble resources.
Adding Heidelberg CS92 to the line-up was particularly beneficial as over 80 percent of Sain’s jobs fitted into this size. Moreover, the machine brought a lot of economies in terms of substantial savings on board and plates. “The savings were huge. I would call ‘they’ contributed to the ROI actually,” says Sachin.
Key Notes : > Houses a complete line-up of Heidelberg machines. > Uses Heidelberg Offset quality for Proofing needs. > Aims to double turnover enabled by new Heidelberg CS 92 capabilities.

Starting his Pharma Packaging business which began at Burari in Delhi, Sachin moved Sain Packaging operations to Rai (Sonepat in Haryana) as the business expanded and the need for a bigger facility arose. “Within 6 months of our starting the unit at Burari with a single colour Adast Dominant Offset printing machine, we installed a 2 colour Heidelberg,” recalls Sachin. Today the company houses only Heidelberg brand printing machines and that is one of the reasons for Sachin to get his latest machine a Heidelberg as well – the new Heidelberg CS 92 press. “Though we have been in touch with a number of other manufacturers too, we went for our time tested favourite brand finally,” cheers Sachin. Sain Packaging, for the most part, even when it needs printing 100 cartons, does its printing on Offset. “As the proof needs to match with the actual product or else there are chances of rejection which we always try to avoid, we go for Offset,” reasons Sachin. “We
have learnt the hard way to do the proofing on Offset itself,” he adds. Sachin believes that in order to cater to the Pharma market, one needs to have both long and short runs in one’s kitty. Adding Heidelberg CS92 to their line-up was particularly beneficial as over 80 percent of their jobs fitted into the CS92 size. “The main reason for us to opt for the Heidelberg CS92 machine was the efforts of the Heidelberg staff mainly Mr. Deepak Walia,” admires Sachin. Moreover, the machine brought a lot of economies in terms of substantial savings on board and plates. “The savings were huge. I would call ‘they’ contributed to the ROI actually,” avows Sachin. Apart from its size advantages in terms of board and plates costs, the machine brought significant economy in power and labour costs too.
pressideas/ commercial printing
Presently the company has three 5 colour machines all with coater, a 4 colour machine and four double colour machines with all allied post press machines required to cater to the Indian pharma industry. Sachin’s purpose of putting up the brand new Heidelberg CS92 was not to increase production capacity but it was rather to bring quality improvements. “The CS92 was chiefly for increasing the quality of our production but then productivity will surely increase all by itself with the apparent production capabilities of this acquisition,” he reckons. In fact, the whole production of the present unit with the available machine is equivalent to half of the production capacity of the new machine and so in addition to quality, they surely have significantly shot up their production capacity as well. The annual turnover of the company presently is about 50 crores a year with board consumption to the tune of 400-450 tons while operating on a round-the-clock model. “I expect to have a turnover of over 100 crores in the coming financial year with the addition of the new machine,” claims a confident looking Sachin. Speaking about the Pharma Industry today, Sachin recalls changes that have occurred over the one-and-a-half decade since he started operation, “While in the earlier days
the industry wasn’t very serious about board quality or printing. Today, our customers need only the best quality boards with the best of the printing and add-ons that too at the best prices.” The post press infrastructure at Sain Packaging includes two Bobst Die Cutters (one new and two second hand machines), three Maxima Die Cutters, three Folder Gluer (one Bobst and two from Cartonal), five UV Texture Machine, seven manual Die Cutters. Sachin is planning to acquire Braille enable machines; their customers in pharma exports have a fixed requirement for that. Moreover, he sees its demand to rise in India as well with it becoming a mandatory requirement in due course. Sain Packaging as on today, caters to the export market through their principals to the extent of almost 40% of their production. Their clients are mainly from the nearby regions like Baddi, Roorkie, Paonta Sahib, Amritsar, Haridwar etc. The company presently operates from an industrial plot in the Rai Industrial Area with a covered area of 65000 square feet which includes a basement, ground, plus 2 floors. “We have an in-house corrugation unit too – catering mostly to the in-house requirements only,” informs Sachin. About 250 people work
in his 2025 square meter plant. The company expects to double the turnover in the coming year with the addition of the new Heidelberg. Sain Packaging’s sister concerns are also active into Lamitubes and aluminium tube for containers for pesticides etc. “A bit of luck, faith in oneself and hard work is the key to success,” concludes Sachin.

World’s 1st serial drupa specification SM XL 106 Technology driven Elle Media Group to take delivery of world’s first serial drupa specification Speedmaster XL 106-5+L.
Heidelberg recently announced its new Speedmaster drupa 2020 generation. Elle Media Group have concluded the purchase of the very first serial 2020 drupa specification XL106-5+L in the world from Heidelberg UK. This will replace a three-year-old machine which has produced an incredible 210 million impressions since its installation in March 2017.
The Elle Media Group in Essex, England, is a leading publisher of charity greeting cards and is renowned for its high-quality commercial printing.
Key Notes : > Speedmaster XL 106 five-colour press with coating unit to be installed in England in spring. > High-productivity printer expects over 300 hours more print capacity per year compared to previous model. > With Prinect and Push to Stop concept going for the Smart Print Shop.

Elle Media Group continues to be Heidelberg’s most productive operation in Europe on a straight configuration press. The business regularly produces over 7 million impressions on one press, per month with an average run length of circa 4,000 and an average a makeready time of just over 3.2 minute. The new industry benchmark press will be delivered to the Essex based company in March and will continue with the businesses ethos of deploying the latest technology to ensure the lowest operating cost per sheet and to ensure the right capacity is available for its ever growing greeting card publishing division and commercial print customers. With this investment the company continues to adapt its service structure to ensure technology enhances its customers experience at all times through its journey with Elle Media Group. With a full suite of Prinect products, its transition into a fully working Smart Print Shop and Push to Stop producer has been accelerated through the continued drive and
delivery of its fantastic team. The numbers from Prinect Smart BI both in terms of output and quality showed this investment would deliver the required ROI in what remains one of the most competitive market spaces in worldwide print. “We had been evaluating this investment for over 12 months as we knew with the output levels we were producing and the fixed operating costs in place that our investment cycle would need to be decreased to ensure we sustained our operating cost per sheet. This was the primary driver for the investment combined with the increase in capacity for the same overhead due to Intellistart 3 ensuring one minute improvement on current performance which will give us another 320 hrs of available press time per year to ensure we maximise the opportunities being presented to us,” says James Cuthbert, Managing Director at Elle Media Group. Founded in 1982 as Falder Printing, Elle Media Group is based in Seax WAY, Essex. The company boasts an in-house creative studio, the leading charity greeting card publishing house, and a print company equipped with the very best of modern technology. The acquisition of the new drupa specification XL1065+L press is intended to ensure that Elle Media Group remains at the cutting-edge of technology in the industry in the years to come.

Highly personalized diaries in runs of one NINO Druck GmbH enabled by MECCANOTECNICA Universe, folding and book sewing machine.
Examples of highly personalized diaries produced by Nino Druck.
NINO Druck GmbH is a forefront German commercial printer that operates in 4 divisions: Offset, Digital, Web-to-print, and Crossmedia. Based in the RhinelandPalatinate State, NINO Druck employs more than 160 people, and thanks to digital printing, is exploiting new possibilities offering its customers significant benefits in terms of speed, lead time and efficiency. The company, established in 1988, operates several sheet-fed digital printing machines, with toner technology and produces among other products: photo books, personalized diaries and notebooks in short runs down to one book. Print-on-demand and web-to-print services are also a core business enabling B2B customers such as publishers and print shops to take advantage of new publishing models and print only when needed.
Moreover, thread sewing is ideal for digital printers with a very short time-to-market. Books can be opened and validated as soon as they are produced and are immediately ready for delivery.
RESULTS “Thanks to Universe, we are now producing personalized diaries in runs down to one book. These books contain highly personalized details such as birthdays, important events, notes and anniversaries already printed on the pages. Such information is collected through online portals, we receive the order and deliver to the final customer. The hardcover is also personalized with initials and inscriptions.
These are truly unique books. Moreover, the new solution has demonstrated its value also for other applications. We now produce with the Universe, photobooks with a high number of pages; this ensures once again durability and excellent haptic user experience,” says Michael Schmid, “We are very satisfied with the Universe. Production quality is consistent, the machine is reliable and change over time is highly automated and quick.” Universe, automatic folding and book sewing machine, is the sheet-fed solution for fast and versatile digital book production. The solution allows cost-effective binding of short runs and guarantees the production of highquality books.
Challenge “One of our customers had to produce personalized diaries and notebooks in ultra-short runs. Its main request was that the books had to withstand at least one year of daily use and wear. With the existing adhesive binding machine we could not guarantee such durability,” says Michael Schmid, Head of Digital Printing.
SOLUTION “The automatic book sewing machine for digital printing Universe was the right solution for our problem.” Thread sewing has no rivals in terms of resistance and longevity. It is a purely mechanical process not affected by inks, papers or environmental conditions. Innovation in an evolving sector: shaping the future of print More than 80 delegates from across Europe meet in Brussels at the event discussing the future of the commercial print market. Shaping the Future of Print: Commercial Print 2020 was organised by Intergraf, the European federation for print and digital communication, with the support of Smithers and the Nordic Offset Printers Association (NOPA). The event was moderated by Cees Verweij, President of Intergraf.
“‘Using customer data goes very far’ because it is powerful and useful for companies when selling their products. It’s all about relevance […] If what is inside is useful people will read it – the rest is of less importance.” - Jo Van De Weghe (Symeta – Colruyt Group)
Key Notes : > Intergraf keeps sustainability high on the agenda. > Whatever you do, don’t do the same things – you’re in a market that is changing. > Changing demands require business models to be reinvented to own the relationship with the customer rather than the manufacturing.

February 2019
“Whatever you do, don’t do the same things – you’re in a market that is changing,” was one of the key messages communicated by Sean Smyth (Smithers) to European printers. The rate of change for the commercial printing industry with regard to technology, business models and customer demand is growing, and the landscape of the industry already looks vastly different from a few short decades ago. Across the commercial print sector today, there are many different types of companies – some very successful, with a young, skilled, enthusiastic workforce who have no trouble innovating and recruiting. However, as in any rapidly developing sector, other companies are trailing behind. Demographic changes are entering the market (Generation Z), as well as the upper levels of management in printing companies (Millennials), and “their preferences are now their demands”. According to Smyth, this requires business models to be reinvented to own the relationship with the customer rather than the manufacturing, and focus more intensively on issues relating to sustainability. In order to not only survive, but thrive in today’s new context, Smyth advised printers to think about their customers in a different way and re-invent their business model to better meet customers’ – and employees’ – changing demands. Sustainability is a hot-button issue for commercial printers across Europe, and with the recent introduction of the EU’s Green Deal, at European level too. Many speakers at Commercial Print 2020 covered topics relating to sustainability. The first speaker of the day, Emmanuelle Maire (European Commission), presented about the EU’s Circular Economy Action Plan (expected in March 2020), which will be closely linked to the Industrial Strategy. She expressed that she was “very happy that Intergraf keeps
sustainability high on the agenda” for printers. Maire also mentioned the EU Ecolabel for printed paper, an environmental labelling scheme introduced in 2012, explaining that “only the greenest products will get the label”, ensuring that it “incentivises the front-runners to push for the best products to be the norm”. Jannick Schmidt (2.-0 Consultants and University of Aalborg), also addressed environmental labelling schemes, urging policymakers to better include Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in the design of certification systems to improve their real-life effects. Schmidt explained that if LCA is not included in the development of labelling schemes then a lot of important information is not taken into account, making them less effective because “following your intuition will not necessarily reduce waste”. Also on environmental matters, Paul Verspoor (Intergraf), an expert on technical environmental regulations affecting printers, presented about new requirements for heatset printers. The requirements include a revision of all environmental permits (before mid-2024) based on the revised BREF. Verspoor
pressideas/ commercial printing
explained that Intergraf will produce ‘Heatset BREF Guidance’ to advise printers of any changes, as well as following all of the necessary legislative developments. In a particularly interactive session, experts from 4 different countries (the Netherlands, France, Germany and the UK) joined a panel about door-drops. National governments and/or local authorities in certain countries (the Netherlands, for example) are increasingly putting pressure on unaddressed printed advertising mail. If this continues, it will have an effect on the printers of such products across Europe. The panel – and audience participation – made clear that the real fight is the public’s inaccurate perception of print. According to one of the panellists, “print is not as bad as it is perceived […] What we know about our sustainable, circular industry, the public does not know”. From a legal perspective, these developments are troubling for a number of reasons. Not only is the freedom of retailers to sell their products under threat, but certain groups of – often more vulnerable – consumers are also at risk of losing out if they can no longer be contacted in this way.
Importantly, Mark Davies (Whistl and ELMA) reported that in Europe, generally, “the higher the volume, the higher the opt-out”. In the UK, 4 door-drop items are delivered per week, in the Netherlands it is 34, and in the EU average is 14. Davies questioned whether “we need to pull back a bit as an industry”, strongly advising door-drop companies to “diversify across their customer base”. The future of the European printing industry was elaborated on by the other speakers at Commercial Print 2020. Markus Hoffmann (Leonhard Kurz Foundation & Co.) told participants in his presentation about new technologies for embellishments that this is a growing market because “customers more often want not only an optical, but a physical, product”. Annette Dales (Multicopy) highlighted that “there is a big future for print, but it is also with cross-media”. And Jo Van De Weghe (Symeta – Colruyt Group) presented about Colruyt’s use of personalisation and targeted messaging in their communications with customers. He explained that “using customer data goes very far” because it is powerful and useful for companies when selling their products. Van
De Weghe stated that “it’s all about relevance […] If what is inside is useful people will read it – the rest is of less importance”. In conclusion, the commercial print market in Europe has both challenges and opportunities and individual companies must decide how to adapt to deal with this. Print no longer exists in isolation and it has to operate in a fast-changing world – but there is a bright future for the sector for those who respond in an innovative way to the changing tide.

Change in Heidelberg Management Board: Ulrich Hermann leaves the company New structure strengthens efficiency and implementation speed. The Supervisory Board and Management Board of Heidelberg have decided to reorganize and further streamline the management structure. The Management Board of the company will be reduced to two persons and will in future consist of CEO Rainer Hundsdörfer and CFO Marcus A. Wassenberg. To this end, the level below the Management Board will be significantly strengthened with a newly established Executive Committee. The Executive Committee will be responsible for cross-product customer solutions and the operational functions, and together with the Management Board will implement the transformation of the company. As part of these changes, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hermann is leaving the company by mutual agreement. “By merging our Management Board divisions and setting up an Executive Committee, we aim to make our internal processes even more efficient so that we can drive forward the ongoing realignment of Heidelberg with even more vigor,” says Rainer Hundsdörfer, Chairman of the Management Board. As part of the adjustment of the organizational structure Prof. Dr. Hermann will leave the company by mutual agreement at the end of the current financial year 2019/20. The Supervisory Board thanked Prof. Dr. Hermann for his achievements and his successful commitment to Heidelberg as part of the digital transformation: “Over the

past three years, Ulrich Hermann has shaped the further development of Heidelberg with innovative impetus and valuable contributions. With his important pioneering work in the realignment of the company, the successful introduction of digital business models in the IoT sector, the subscription business and the establishment of the Heidelberg Digital Unit (HDU), he has laid a decisive foundation for the future direction of the company. Following the strategic concept and entrepreneurial development work, further implementation can now be carried out by the operational management. With the new management structure, we will now use and drive forward the opportunities
arising from changed business models, technological change and new customer requirements,” said Supervisory Board Chairman Dr. Martin Sonnenschein. The newly established Executive Committee will coordinate key operational functions and the operating business and will be jointly responsible for everything from development to sales. Together with the Management Board, this committee will further develop innovative technologies and digital business models across all markets and customer segments in the interests of customers, in order to increase growth and profitability.

Messe Düsseldorf postpones key events Alternate Dates established: BEAUTY DÜSSELDORF and TOP HAIR – DIE MESSE Düsseldorf will be held from 18 - 20 September 2020. The trade fair duo BEAUTY and TOP HAIR Düsseldorf, which was postponed due to the effects of the Coronavirus Covid-19, will now be held in autumn 2020. BEAUTY DÜSSELDORF, the leading meeting point for cosmetics, nail, foot, wellness & spa, will take place in the halls 9 -13 from Friday, 18 September, to Sunday, 20 September 2020. Held concurrently on two days – Saturday and Sunday, 19 and 20 September 2020, TOP HAIR – DIE MESSE Düsseldorf will be held in halls 15-17 as Europe’s leading event for hairdressers. “We are very happy to have found alternate dates for our trade fairs so quickly. The whole team of Messe Düsseldorf jointly with its co-organisers, partners and exhibitors has put its heart and soul into the preparation of the two trade fairs. Together we will make sure that our exhibition halls in September will turn into emotional experience worlds where people meet who are passionate about cosmetic services and hairstyling and barbering,” says Wolfram N. Diener, Managing Director at Messe Düsseldorf GmbH. All visitors tickets already purchased will, of course, remain valid for the alternate dates. An important signal is given by Düsseldorf’s hospitality industry, by DEHOGA (German Hotel and Restaurant Association) to be more precise: “We appeal to our members and the industry as a whole to show flexibility when it comes to rebookings by exhibitors and visitors. The Düsseldorf trade fairs such as BEAUTY and TOP HAIR play an extremely important role for the city, the hospitality and food service sectors. It would be counterproductive not to show goodwill in this situation,” as both DEHOGARepresentatives Giuseppe Saitta (Chairman Düsseldorf/District Group Rhein-Kreis Neuss) and Rolf D. Steinert (Düsseldorf/RheinKreis Neuss Hotels and Tourism Group) emphasize.
In doing so, Messe Düsseldorf stated that it was following the recommendation of the crisis management team of the German government to take into account the principles of the Robert Koch Institute when making a risk assessment of major events. On the basis of this recommendation and the recent significant increase in the number of infected persons, including in Europe, Messe Düsseldorf has reassessed the situation. Added to this is the uncertainty of numerous exhibitors and visitors at the events in March and the complicated travel situation, especially for international customers. Werner M. Dornscheidt, CEO of Messe Düsseldorf GmbH: “Our customers, partners and employees trust us. Not only when it comes to the professional and successful handling of major international events in Düsseldorf. They can also have this trust in us when we make decisions about critical
situations in the interests of their safety”. “This decision was not an easy one for all concerned,” says Thomas Geisel, Lord Mayor of the City of Düsseldorf and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Messe Düsseldorf GmbH. “But the postponements at the present time are necessary for Messe Düsseldorf and its customers in view of the increasingly dynamic developments.” The organisers however refuted any speculations regarding their plan to postpone the major trade fairs interpack and drupa, which will be held in Düsseldorf in May and June. “Of course, we are taking our customers’ inquiries regarding the coronavirus very seriously here too,” says Dornscheidt, “so we will re-evaluate the situation in good time in consultation with health authorities and partners in order to make the appropriate decisions.”
Earlier Messe Düsseldorf GmbH had announced postponing the trade fairs ProWein, wire, Tube, Beauty, Top Hair and Energy Storage Europe.

Juan Señor, president of UK’s Innovation Media Consulting Group, got things rolling with a keynote address on driving a news media business to profitability. Señor presented fourteen business models and one single strategy to transform a newsroom into a reader first model. This strategy is based on the ‘Innovation in News Media World Report’ that he authored for WAN-IFRA in 2019. “A newsroom should deliver content worth paying for. Everything that generates value should generate revenue,” he said. The two-day conference covered a range of topics dealing with the news media business such as digital and programmatic advertising, video and OTT space in India, subscription strategies and transformation. The first day of the conference covered digital
advertising and alternate revenue sources for the news media business, discussing, in-depth, how a publisher can drive their business to profitability. Gone are the days when the biggest revenue source of a media house was advertising revenue. Partnerships and alliances between publishers are the new normal; as is content syndication, e-commerce, podcasts, sponsorship and events. Puneet Gupt, the Chief Operating Officer of Times Internet Ltd., in his presentation on ‘Monetising in the times of change,’ urged publishers to find out what content readers are willing to pay for. “Once you’ve figured that, create resources to provide that content to the reader. Quality of revenue should be a factor in deciding how a news media company monetises. A brand must consider ‘direct sales vs programmatic sales’, ‘brand solutions vs standard advertisements,’ ‘reader revenue vs advertising revenue,’ and ‘revenue from syndication vs on-site revenue’,” he said. Day 1 of the conference closed with the South Asian Digital Media Awards 2020, which saw more than 80 entries from over 20 media companies. An international jury comprising high ranked professionals from the media industry chose 34 winners for the fifth edition of the awards. Manorama Online bagged an award for the ‘Best News Website’, while BBC India won the ‘Best Data Visualisation’ award.

The second day of the conference covered the road ahead for digital journalism and explored if digital content is a bubble waiting to burst. Siddharth Varadarajan, Founding Editor of The Wire said that it is not a bubble. “A lot of growth is still possible in digital journalism, specially since the source of credible content is drying up,” he said. Rupa Jha, Head of Indian Languages of BBC spoke of video becoming a major content consumed on digital media. “India is high on video consumption. The way ahead will be vidoes on investigative stories, experimentation with technology, and collaborating with independent studios and people in business,” Jha said. “Having data to guide our content strategy is very important” she added. The conference also covered the over-thetop (OTT) scenario in South Asia and the threats, challenges and opportunities that accompany online streaming in the region. The Indian media market currently hosts more than 30 over-the-top (OTT) players. The country is expected to overtake South Korea in the next five years to become the world’s eighth biggest OTT player. The conference ended with a conversation between Navaneeth L, CEO, The Hindu, and Ritu Kapur, Co-Founder and CEO, Quintillion Media, India. According to a KPMG survey, by 2030 the digital consumer is going to be
non-English speaking, mobile-phone user and increasingly willing to pay for content online. “The consumption of regional news is far higher than the consumption of English news in India,” Navaneeth said. “India is largely a mobile first market. As far as paying for content is concerned, Indian media has given away far too much for far too long for far too little. There is a sense of entitlement among consumers that media has to be free.”

(‘Young Workers Days’) to promote our sector. The project will also include a website with a repository of public communications materials.
Recruiting young people to the printing industry is consistently identified as one of the primary issues experienced by both education providers and printing companies. Part of the reason for this is a lack of attractiveness based on an out-of-date

Reflect Reality: Increasing Women’s Voices in the News “Representing women’s choices, challenges, dilemmas, passions, and journeys is what journalism is about.” The United for News coalition has launched Reflect Reality, a digital manual to help newsrooms include more authoritative female and diverse voices in their stories. Led by Internews in collaboration with the World Economic Forum, United for News’ Reflect Reality incorporates proven strategies and lessons learned from two dozen organizations around the world working to address this disparity. “Women are often at the heart of decision making in all levels of society, be it as politicians, as entrepreneurs, scientists, educators, and at their households,” said Juliana Iootty, Head of Asian Region, BBC World Service Group. “Representing their choices, challenges, dilemmas, passions, and journeys is what journalism is about.”
The absence of women’s voices in the news contributes to a culture that devalues women – a world where women’s potential is perpetually limited by their lack of exposure to powerful role models, their limited opportunity to connect with a shared experience and the reinforced notion of traditional gender roles.

Globally, only 24% of people heard, seen or read about in the news are women. This gender gap is widest in news about politics and government, where women are featured in just 16% of political news. The absence of women’s voices in the news contributes to a culture that devalues women – a world where women’s potential is perpetually limited by their lack of exposure to powerful role models, their limited opportunity to connect with a shared experience and the reinforced notion of traditional gender roles. It also means that newsrooms miss out on perspectives that are critical to break stories and grow their audience.
While female experts and spokespersons are abundant, they are often less noticeable to reporters either due to unconscious bias, cultural barriers, and women’s own reluctance to engage with media. Many women experience harassment in response to media appearance. Others may lack confidence in their expertise or ability to engage with media. Reflect Reality responds to these challenges with practical tips, approaches, and tools. Key contributors to Reflect Reality are United for News coalition partners. Bloomberg reveals lessons from their New Voices initiative, an internal effort to diversify the financial and business experts they turn to around the world. Edelman lends insights from the Trust Barometer and their effort to advocate for gender parity in corporate spokespersons. The BBC’s 50:50 Project shares best practices for news teams to reach gender parity by tracking their sources daily. WAN-IFRA contributes expertise from its Women in News program. Informed Opinions shares strategies on how to cultivate sources and overcome women experts’ reluctance to be interviewed. “Companies must foster environments where women are empowered to put themselves out there as go-to contacts for media interviews, panel discussions, and more,” said Lisa Kimmel, Chair & CEO, Canada and Latin America, Edelman.

Reflect Reality’s strategies section is informed by United for News pilot projects with Canada’s The Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star. Both newsrooms tested new interventions into their story production process, with a goal towards increasing female and ethnically diverse voices. “What we are trying to do is break people’s habits. The intention is there, it’s just that when we are busy, we do things the exact same ways as always,” said Angela Pacienza, Managing Editor, Experience, The Globe and Mail.
“If you want people to pay you, they need to trust you, and they won’t trust you if they can’t see themselves in you,” said Kathy English, Public Editor at the Toronto Star. Reflect Reality was developed by Internews with support from the News Integrity Initiative and the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. United for News is a multi-stakeholder coalition led by Internews in collaboration with the World Economic Forum. It seeks
to transform media markets around the world, so that citizens, businesses and governments everywhere can benefit from the positive impact of high-quality, local news and information. Coalition members involved in the creation of Reflect Reality include Bloomberg, BBC 50:50 Project, Global Forum for Media Development, NewsGain, Edelman, Internews, and WAN-IFRA, the World Association of News Publishers.

At Hindustan Times Media, a large Indian media group known for large print volumes, maintaining top quality with innovative products, two mRC-3D cameras for colour register and cut-off control were installed recently on a Harris N400B press at their Greater Noida Plant. The mRC-3D system replaced an older and non-functioning automation register- and cutoff control system from another manufacturer. Rakesh Dave, Managing Director of QIPC-EAE India: ‘Hindustan Times approached us for a system that could deliver consistent, high quality performance to keep waste to a minimum. We could deliver that.’
Mirror Image in Gandhinagar also chose to upgrade its press automation with an mRC3D system from QIPC. Two cameras on the Harris M110 press automate colour register and cut-off control. “We know Mirror Image pretty well and we have a good relationship
with the company. The automation they had on their press, which is from another manufacturer, is no longer working properly. When opting for a replacement system, we were at the top of their list”. Q.I. Press Controls develops and delivers innovative, high quality optical measure and control systems. The company is globally active in the newspaper and magazine printing industry. The total solutions of QIPC are supported by a worldwide service network. These reliable systems are proven in the market of existing and new printing presses and have been known to offer customers structural better results.
Delhi Press Patra Prakashan Also in Delhi, two new mRC-3D cameras for colour register and cut-off control were installed on a Harris N400B press. In 1923, Sweden took the first initiative towards international cooperation by organising an international printers’ congress in Gothenburg. Following the success of this event, a permanent office to support European collaboration was suggested. With financial support and an office secured for 1 year from a German printer, Intergraf began work on 1st January 1930 in Berlin as the ‘International Bureau of the Federations of Master Printers’. During the Second World War, the Bureau’s activities were put on hold, resuming again in 1946 in London from an office loaned by the British Federation of Master Printers. Activities between members of the bureau began in Brussels in the 1960s, following the creation of the European Economic Communities, before Intergraf was formally established in 1984.
Intergraf is extremely proud to have served this creative and resilient industry for 90 years - and hopes for much longer into the future. Long live print!

Idea Catalysts reaffirms confidence in Konica Minolta technology The Mohali based hybrid printer repeats Konica Minolta upgrade to explore new vistas. Mohali, Punjab based Idea Catalysts has a rich, over two decades’ experience in the Printing field. The first generation company was started by a young, fresh out of college Mr. Jasmeet Dhamija, pursuing his dream career, matching his tech-savvy disposition. It started in the year 1999 with a single colour Offset machine. Jasmeet recalls the time when printing used to be a rather complex process with a lot of time and efforts going into it. “Back then, Prepress was pretty challenging with jobs requiring manual planning and lot of efforts going just into colour separation,” he remembers. Jasmeet soon found a huge market and promising opportunity in digitization of Prepress. This was the beginning of one of the leading Prepress processing houses of Chandigarh. Starting with a Dianippon Screen drum-scanner-based outputting device, not before long, Idea Catalysts had installed their Scitex Imagesetter to cater to the increased demand. The Processing House proved as Idea Catalysts’ mainstay in addition to their Printing Press.
“In fact Konica Minolta AccurioPress C3070 is a perfect partner for a quality conscious Offset printer who wishes to add Digital capabilities to win that edge and have a healthy mix of the two technologies.” Jasmeet Dhamija, Director, Idea Catalysts.
Key Notes : > From Printing to Processing House to a Hybrid Printer. > The latest addition is a new Konica Minolta AccurioPress C3070 Digital Press. > Konica Minolta proves a perfect partner for digital value addition for their offset quality.

The business was facing immense competition till 2005 with a lot many processing houses coming up in the region, putting pressure on margins and business. “There were more than 10 processing houses in Chandigarh catering to the printers in the tricity (of Mohali, Panchkula and Chandigarh)
in addition to the nearby areas. The margins were getting thinner and thinner, therefore, we took a conscious decision to exit from it and focus back on the printing business,” says Jasmeet. With more time and money getting invested into the Digital Printing business, there came their first Digital Printing machine – a Xerox in the year 2007. It was a used machine and there has been no looking back from Digital Printing ever since. Jasmeet, rather calls it Hybrid Printing for being an Offset Printer and having ability to incorporate Digital Printing as well. “There is no way an Offset Printer can survive without the integration of Digital Printing into their setup to cater to the demands of existing and future customers,” declares Jasmeet. “In 2007, I presume we were the first to get into the Hybrid Printing bandwagon and we even today carry the benefits of the decision taken then which not only has helped us to retain our business but also to increase it over the years,” continues Jasmeet. In 2009, with the increased burden of work piling up, they decided to upgrade to a brand new Konica Minolta. The Konica Minolta machine stood with them in good stead till December last year when they once again decided to upgrade – this time to a new Konica Minolta AccurioPress C3070. The AccurioPress C3070 digital press is a versatile machine with high productivity up to 70 ppm, 2-sided

banner printing (accepts paper sizes up to 13” x 19.2” and weights up to 350 gsm, banner tray holds 1000 banner sheets of up to 30” and simplex banner printing up to 51”), excellent image quality (1200 x 1200 DPI resolution with 8-bit processing for smoother, more realistic images), real-time automated quality adjustments and much more. “In fact it is a perfect partner for a quality conscious Offset printer who wishes to add Digital capabilities to win that edge and have a healthy mix of the two technologies,” recommends Jasmeet. Konica has always been a perfect partner with Idea Catalyst Inc. considering their very appreciable after sale services and more importantly the machines being rugged enough to carry on in the typical Indian working conditions. Jasmeet’s vision on having a Digital set up within the Offset is rather interesting as he does not look into a long-run high-speed production machine per se for his Digital runs. “I would rather do a Hybrid product with the main body on Offset and Variable on the Digital which gives us more returns per page than if I do a few thousand runs all on Digital,” he reasons. Volumes are not what he always looks for but, value addition
to the Offset printed products is what he calls his forte is. Moreover, this is what he can get higher margins on too. “We provide add-ons to the customer by providing velvet lamination, Spot UV printing, Variable Printing etc. which in fact give me a better return than doing higher volumes,” he explains. Idea Catalysts have been known for their designing enabled by a strong design team. Their products stand part for their design and quality of printing. Besides, their expertise in Variable Data Printing – not only in numeric terms but also variable picture printing and special capabilities like providing 100 different numbers with counterfoils on a single sheet of paper – not only put them apart in a competitive field but also help them in getting a price of choice for their products. In fact Jasmeet is pretty much happy with the production that the Konica Minolta machine gives him. His target is about 5-10 thousand sheets a day. Keeping himself away from the price-cutting rat race among many digital printers of this day, he rather prefers to keep his margins comfortable. Most of the jobs he does for his customers are a combination of Digital and Offset. “I find this combination a lethal one; considering the present market scenario of immense competition and cut
throat rates prevalent in the market,” believes Jasmeet. “Scratch coupons are a case to point the advantage Idea Catalysts gives to its scratch coupon customers who get it not only on-time but in perfect condition every time,” he confirms. According to Jasmeet, the reason for the upgradation of the recent machine was to chiefly get an upgrade of the software that Konica provides with the new machines. “Had it not been for the new software, I could never have come to know that 400 pages of a B&W print taken out by my operator were actually being routed through the colour route. This meant we were to pay for the fasma of colour pages price where as we were charging for the B&W,” he contends. Such small details are what matter for a business owner and all in all, they help in improving the balance sheet. Jasmeet has configured his system to send him a report of the previous day’s outputs from the machine at 8 in the morning. This helps him to actually see the production (and idle time) and plan his day. “It’s one day at a time,” Jasmeet concludes, summing up his success.

The future of label printing – drupa is even more important than you think. When I think about drupa, I think about it as the World Cup of Printing. The World Cup too happens every four years – but contrary to drupa my own country is usually not a qualifier there. People told me when I first joined the printing industry “don’t go there, it’s too big, you’ll get lost”, or “don’t go there, it’s not focused enough on your business”. Since my first drupa visit, I can’t wait to visit again and I certainly won’t miss it in 2020.
“The digitalization of our world and of our lives is everywhere and is rapidly entering into the print and packaging industry. Digital may be a competitor but it can also be part of the solution for printers and converters to be more efficient.”

February 2019
Yes, it’s true that drupa is huge and I did get lost there more than once. Yes, it’s not just focused on labels printing, but to attend the biggest print show in the world gives me an overview of the complete printing market, the latest innovations and the trends that we can expect in future years. The different printing sectors within the industry are related and some trends that occur now in one category will also evolve in another. For example, inkjet technology was first introduced for wide-format applications but it is now playing a major role in label printing. To gain knowledge about competing printing processes at drupa gives me more insight and adds new perspectives to my own business.
So, what can we expect from the next drupa in 2020? First and foremost – innovation! Printing, including packaging, is under intense pressure to transform itself. Brand owners are upping the pace and have
new, different requirements. The industry is more competitive than ever and innovation is what our clients – brand owners – are looking for. One very important aspect is sustainability. Printing, and especially packaging, is under huge pressure to improve its carbon footprint and to limit waste. Today’s younger generation participates in regular demonstrations to put pressure on governments and brand owners. They don’t know why packaging is important but many think it’s something inherently evil. Most don’t understand the benefits of packaging and look only at the waste generated. Even if today some more sustainable solutions are available, a lot of them are not implemented – simply because they are not yet economically viable. Yes, everyone wants a better, cleaner planet but nobody is prepared to pay for it! Packaging customers are out to cut cost, whatever it takes. Our group has, for example, developed many new solutions and brought them to the market. We are certified PEFC, FSC; Imprim’vert did a carbon footprint analysis. But today our green turnover is still very small. Maybe we are not good enough in promoting or selling our solutions, but the resistance to change is also still very strong – too strong in my view. I really hope to see more

sustainable packaging materials coming through, and more environmentally friendly inks, with print-machines able to print and process substrates in a more environmentally friendly manner. At the World Cup of print, the biggest contest is the confrontation between printing techniques: flexo, offset, helio and the new digital rising star. In the context of increased demand for more sustainability, quality, shorter delivery times and reduced costs, all printing technologies are improving and innovation can move applications from one printing technology to another. But like at a World Cup, watch out for the hooligans – those who only believe in one printing technology (their own) and don’t appreciate or understand the advantages of others. Nowhere else can you be as close to the evolution of printing technologies as at drupa. Here an understanding of the advantages and disadvantages is essential in order to better serve your customers’ needs. I expect major changes to come for all printing processes as they need to improve efficiency, waste management, quality and also reduce their environmental impact significantly. Something to have in mind is that traditional print techniques are becoming more and more digital, with sensors all over the machines and taking away time consuming tasks from the operators. For example, digital set-up tools enable printers and converters to be more efficient; cameras and sensors can reduce the set-up time and increases productivity significantly – and all without replacing your current operators. The digitalization of our world and our lives is everywhere and is rapidly entering into
the print and packaging industry. Digital may be a competitor but it can also be part of the solution for printers and converters to be more efficient, to calculate in a more precise way their real costs and to integrate physical products into the digital world using, for example, augmented reality. RFID and printed electronics are also opportunities for the print industry to connect with the digital world. Digital in general, incorporating prepress, printing and converting in one system, is on the rise with the automation of all the steps of the print-workflow, thereby helping to optimize the entire production floor and not only the printing part. And it also links printers and converters better together with their customers and suppliers. In a digital world print can be seamlessly integrated into multichannel communications offering personalization (individualisation).
And what about my expectations for drupa 2020? Well, I don’t usually have specific expectations – most of the time I get surprised by visiting a booth I didn’t intend to visit, which then informs or even inspires me about something unexpected. In the end, you will get a different view on your investments or on the market trends and dynamics. So ‘expect the unexpected’ and be open-minded! As mentioned, drupa is the best place to understand that the printing world is made of numerous applications and that with all the innovation and new technologies being made available, the changes happening are in fact opportunities for printers and converters to reshape their future.
and packaging, a place where all the latest innovations will be put under the spot light. So, see you at drupa 2020!

- Written by Isidore Leiser – CEO of Stratus Packaging, one of the leading European label converters using both conventional and digital technologies to transform the label industry.
Finally, think beyond the printing-press; it will take more than a new press to be successful. At drupa you need to look at the entire production-chain for print and packaging. Substrate innovations are going to be critical in the coming years. The digitalization and the automation of the entire workflow will change your organization. New technologies will require the hiring of new staff and development of new skills. The way you will engage with your clients will change significantly as they are all soon going to be digital natives. So rather than resist the changes, be ready to embrace them. Like the World Cup, drupa is an event you really shouldn’t miss – the biggest meeting place for the world’s leaders in printing

Labels: Sustainability, Environmental protection and Circular economy! The need to make our manufacturing programs sustainable – leaving a legacy of a cleaner and liveable environment for next generations.
There have been efforts to go linerless in producing labels but the inability to do custom shapes die-cutting and high-speed label dispensing on automatic packaging lines have not produced a lasting solution. Efforts and development in this direction are going on and we hope one day the industry can shift to selfadhesive labels without having release liners to dispose off, becomes a reality.
Key Notes : > 50% of all that self-adhesive label industry produces goes as waste in terms of waste matrix and release liners. > Silicone once crosslinked becomes inert and makes paper’s biodegradability in landfills an issue. > The need to design labels that are a part of recycling process of the package – whole package is mono-material for easy reprocessing and recycling.

February 2019
Almost forty years ago, when I was just a commercial siliconiser, people at large did not understand what release paper or silicon paper was. I would jokingly explain it was a product, a protective paper behind a sticker, that would eventually go into wastepaper basket. In real terms the release liner, would be disposed-off in landfills or burnt adding smoke and gasses to the environment impacting it adversely. Time has changed; concern for environment is a necessity and cannot be taken lightly as a joke. We are responsible for leaving behind a legacy of a cleaner and liveable environment for generations that follow us. We need to make our manufacturing programs sustainable. Sustainability means giving back to mother earth what we take from it or reduce drawing the resources that we cannot replenish forthwith cut down generation of industrial waste. Unfortunately, 50% of all that self-adhesive label industry produces goes as waste in terms of waste matrix and release liners. While globally many endeavours are being adopted to reduce liner waste yet in India a lot needs to be done. Switching over to liner less labels where-ever possible helps, but not much work has been done in this direction. Using thinner filmic liners does result in reduced tonnage of liners and their recyclability. During this period many a top-end printers have started using clear on clear filmic label materials aiding sustainability to some extent. Global leader in Labelstocks, Avery
Dennison has initiated a program to collect and recycle silicone release liners in India, which is a big step in this direction. But given the size of the country and geographical spread of label units, it is a gigantic task. Other than this, some printers have adopted waste management by shredding waste and compacting it for use as fuel in boilers and other applications; this is only a miniscule portion of the Industry. Largely, the waste is still sent to landfills or is incinerated. In times to come legislation will come to make sustainability and environment safety an imperative. It is time that the label and print fraternity at large must understand that it is the need of the
pressideas/ plc
the over extraction of resources or to the degradation of environmental resources, and should include policies that improve resource efficiency, reduce waste and mainstream sustainability practices across all sectors of the economy. In our labels and packaging industry this is an imperative that needs to be attended to because the percentage of waste generated is high, going to landfills. Some companies do incinerate or send the waste generated as matrix or side trim to kilns for use as fuel. This may look good management but in the longer run we are putting gasses into the air from the different materials going into the manufacture of labelstocks viz.; paper, film, primer coats, silicone, adhesive etc. Each component will produce different type of emissions that have in unison no single solution to treat them. Thus, there is a need for reducing the waste generated, use recyclable materials, reduce the energy consumption etc. to become more sustainable.
hour and also has larger implications in terms of sustainability, recyclability, circular economy, environmental protection, etc. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership. They
recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go together with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests. The Sustainable Development Goal number 12 states; worldwide material consumption has expanded rapidly, as has material footprint per capita, seriously jeopardizing the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. Urgent action is needed to ensure that current material needs do not lead to
The label industry globally has been looking at the possibility of recyclability and reusability of the waste matrix or that of the different components of labelstocks. Since release paper is one item that has its usability only until the label is dispensed to be applied on to the product, after that it ends up as waste. Over the years there have been many solutions tried to reduce the impact of this liner waste on the environment. The used liner would either go to landfills or incinerated and in both cases it its impact was adverse. Due to the silicone coating on the paper biodegradability in landfills was an issue as silicone after crosslinking becomes inert. For the same reason paper mills would not buy this waste for re-pulping and making fresh paper. Initial steps taken in reducing the liner waste were replacing the paper liners with thinner filmic liners thereby reducing the tonnage of paper and moreover the waste liner can be remoulded. This was a positive sign, but large-scale shift has not happened in a long time because of additional increased investment in equipment and tooling. There have been efforts to go linerless in producing labels but the inability to do custom shapes die-cutting and high-speed label dispensing on automatic packaging lines have not produced a lasting solution. Efforts and development in this direction are going on and we hope one day the industry can shift to self-adhesive labels without having release liners to dispose off,

becomes a reality. At Labelexpo Europe 2019, four companies Ritrama, Omet, Spilker and ILTI came together to offer their “Core Linerless Solutions”, other companies like Catchpoint are also making strong efforts in this direction, only time will tell how many brand owners move in this direction and prompt their label vendors to offer the linerless label solutions. Some paper mills in Europe have now devised process of de-siliconising release paper and then re-pulping it to make fresh paper but the collection and delivery to the mills from the printing companies widely spread over large geographical locations is a logistic challenge. However still substantial volumes have started to be reprocessed. In India in recent times as mentioned above Avery Dennison has initiated support to a program in which collection of release liners is outsourced to a vendor and then sent to a mill who have devised a process to re-pulp and convert to paperboard. These are positive steps. The menace of waste is gigantic and it has become an absolute emergency to counter it. Governments have woken up to act against generation of materials going to landfills. It is preferred that whatever waste is generated in industrial process should be gainfully recycled for usability to achieve the benefits as described in circular economy. As per a report published in thehindubusinessline.com of 19th September 2019, leading consumer products companies such as Coca-Cola India, PepsiCo India and Bisleri among others have decided to come together to launch a first-of-its-kind packaging waste management venture in the country. The venture, which is called Karo Sambhav, will focus on creating a formal eco-system for collection of post-consumer packaging and optimising material recycling processes. Commenting on the endeavour, T Krishnakumar, President, Coca-Cola India and South-West Asia added, “Through our vision, World Without Waste, we want to ensure that all our packaging material goes for recycling and not to landfills.” Another report appearing in Live Mint 2nd October 2019 states; The government may soon roll out stringent norms and impose heavy fines on corporates, including hospitality industry, mobile manufacturers and packaging industry, for failing to stop use of plastic. Under the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme, which the government plans to implement effectively, manufacturers,
34
February 2019
brand owners, and importers of products should realise and bear responsibility for environmental impact of their products through the product life-cycle. Many of the large FMCG companies have started adopting the requirements of EPR. These are other positive steps taken to eradicate waste to landfills to a great extent. Besides the liner there is the waste matrix which has the adhesive and various kinds of face materials that include uncoated, coated, metallised, coloured, metallised papers, laminates or films with metallisation or topcoats. Side trims are also generated at some label converting units and most labelstock manufacturing units. With increasing prices of real estate besides an environmental issue, the side trims and matrix call for large amount of space to store until disposed off, putting additional pressure on resources. For this reason, larger label companies are shredding and compacting the waste to sell as fuel for boilers, furnaces and cement kilns. There are some innovative entrepreneurs who convert this waste into pallets, floor tiles, wall panelling and some small furniture items. It is interesting to see such endeavours. Circular economy packaging is another buzzword when we talk of sustainability and environmental protection. A circular economy is an economic system aimed at eliminating waste, continual use and recycling of resources to re-engineer products that are preferably not downgraded. It is contrary to the earlier system “traditional linear economy” according to which the aim was ‘take, make, dispose’ model of production to achieve increased usage of all inputs. Labels are the face of any product and in time of growing organised retail and in view of stringent consumer protection laws labels provide the much-needed statutory information, besides becoming
the marketing tool for any product. In such a scenario we need to design labels in manner that they are able, to be a part of recycling process of the package. For instance, on a PE (polyethylene) container we should have a PE label only so that the whole package is mono-polymer and can be effectively reprocessed and recycled. Multi-polymer plastics are neither recyclable nor biodegradable. It is normal in India that we see ragpickers collect the mono polymer milk pouches but leave behind the fancy multi-layered pouches of instant foods and snacks littered around. This is because the monolayer plastics are resaleable for convenient recycling. Similarly, a paperboard carton should have a paper label. Sustainability or circular economy must be in the conscience of all manufacturers, it does not advocate compromising safety or user experience of any product. It also does not mean increased cost of inputs. It is a mindset to create products that make life sustainable and do not deplete resources available to humans. There is need to replenish what we extract from our environment and establish a legacy for generations that follow for staying committed to the cause. It is a cause that is impacting humanity across the globe and all efforts to make public of all races and countries aware of the situation and need to contribute towards this issue in unison are necessary.

Book your future…with Meccanotecnica at drupa From June 16th to the 26th, Meccanotecnica Group will showcase its solutions for book finishing in Hall 16/B42.
In about 100 days Meccanotecnica will be exhibiting in drupa, the biggest trade fair for the graphic art industry. The Meccanotecnica team is getting ready to showcase many improvements, the new generation of several machines together with a new concept proposal. The company aims to better meet the requirements of its traditional customers and potential prospects. The technical development of Meccanotecnica’s solutions is following a path that is driven by three clear lines: • integration of processes; • increase automation; • better efficiency.
Integration of Processes With this the company aims to reduce the number of critical steps in the production process, avoiding the handling of the paper or of the semi-finished product. The result is a more efficient process and the reduction of production costs. In drupa, this effort will be clearly shown both by the solutions for offset and digital print finishing together with Meccanotecnica’s solutions for print-ondemand book production.
Increase Automation It is no secret that printing runs are getting shorter and the number of job titles, that a binder must process in a day, is increasing. Automation is, therefore, in the top list of the challenges that book manufacturers must face.

Brazil advances the transition from analogue to digital printing in the textile industry Digital printing has brought enormous capabilities to companies in the textile industry around the world. The possibility of making smaller and customized batches, with high speed, profitability and in a sustainable way changed the way of facing this market. In Brazil, entrepreneurs working with analogue technology have started to look more closely into the use textiles in direct printing. And those who have already started investing in digital to meet the demands have already been reaping the rewards of the right choice. The growth of digital printing can be felt at FESPA Digital Printing 2020, the main digital printing exhibition in the country, which takes place from March 18 to 21, in São Paulo. According to its director Alexandre Keese, “digital printing shows an impressive growth. This can be seen at the exhibtion itself, which shows in every edition the noteworthy evolution of the solutions aimed at this segment’s value chain.” The major players in the sector are making strides in the country. That’s mainly because of fast-fashion, which has brought the need for smaller batches and collection changes. Digital also brings greater added value, allowing for greater margins for each marketed piece. Digital, even though it is still mainly used
for fast-fashion, is making advancements into new markets. The demand for decor and bed, bath and table products have been on the rise. And the pigment digital printing technology fits very well in this segment. Curtains, sheets, tablecloths, even fabric wallpapers – simply, everything can be worked on −, in addition to fabrics for furniture such as sofas and armchairs. The same goes for the signage market, which takes advantage of the fabric’s sustainable capabilities and also its ease of transport and storage. FESPA Digital Printing will show the power of digital printing in Brazil between March
18 and 21, at the Expo Center Norte, in São Paulo. The major players are going to showcase their solutions in printers and inputs to businessmen in the sector right at a time when the Brazilian economy is booming again. The whole experience is completed with the Digital Textile Conference, a technical congress that offers a day of debate on the outlook for digital printing, sponsored by Global Química & Moda.
FESPA 2020 Event Postponed In light of the rapidly evolving situation regarding COVID-19 in mainland Europe, and in close dialogue with its national Associations and exhibitors, FESPA has taken the decision to postpone FESPA Global Print Expo 2020, European Sign Expo 2020 and Sportswear Pro 2020, originally scheduled to take place at IFEMA Madrid from 24 to 27 March 2020. Based on feedback from exhibitors, FESPA will now seek to reschedule the events for a later date, precise timing and venue still to be determined based on venue availability. FESPA CEO Neil Felton explains: “Until this
week, our actions with regard to COVID-19 – including the pre-emptive action taken in February regarding exhibiting companies from China – have been informed by guidance from the relevant international and national authorities, with the primary objective of safeguarding the health and wellbeing of exhibitors and visitors. However, in light of the recent spread of the virus in specific areas of mainland Europe, we have consulted with our stakeholders and have concluded that it is in the best interests of our community to defer the events to a later date.” FESPA will provide an update regarding revised event dates in due course.
