ENG Cycling enthusiasts know that the best reward when they reach the finish line is the effort they’ve put in out on the road. That’s why thousands of cyclists make the pilgrimage to Tenerife to take part in the Vuelta al Teide and feel the same sensations as the pros, as the race route is part of the training circuit for teams tackling the major races on the international calendar. This year, the event is being held on 6 May. On that day, participants will be dealing with 175 kilometre route and a height gain of 4,400 metres. La ciudad alicantina brilla con las Fiestas de la Reconquista de Moros y Cristianos / The Alicante city sparkles with the Fiestas of the Reconquest of Moors and Christians.
Las Fiestas de la Reconquista de Moros y Cristianos de Orihuela (Alicante), del 9 al 17 de julio, es una de las festividades más importantes y populares de la Comunidad Valenciana y de España. Esta celebración, declarada de Interés Turístico Nacional, conmemora la Reconquista de España por parte de los cristianos después de siglos de dominación musulmana. La ciudad se transforma en un verdadero espectáculo de color, música y baile, con desfiles donde lucen impresionantes trajes, además de representaciones que recrean la lucha entre moros y cristianos y en el que la quema de la pólvora es la protagonista.
Una de las señas de identidad de las fiestas es la Armengola, que representa a la mujer que liberó al pueblo de la invasión musulmana, según cuenta la leyenda. El día 17 de julio es el día grande de la ciudad en la que se exalta la Gloriosa Enseña del Oriol, como homenaje a la bandera de Orihuela. Un evento que se celebra desde el siglo XV.
The Fiestas of the Reconquest of Moors and Christians of Orihuela (Alicante), held from the 9th to the 17th of July, is one of the most beloved and significant festivities in both the Valencian Community and Spain. Designated to be of National Tourist Interest, the celebration commemorates the Reconquest of Spain by the Christians after centuries of Muslim domination. The city is transformed into a dazzling spectacle of colour, music and dance, with parades featuring incredible costumes, as well as re-enactments of the struggle between the Moors and Christians, with gunpowder burning taking centre stage.
One of the hallmarks of the fiestas is the figure of la Armengola, representing the woman who, according to legend, liberated the town from the Muslim invasion. The 17th of July is the city’s big day, when the Glorious Standard of Oriol is raised in tribute to the flag of Orihuela. This is an event that has been celebrated ever since the 15th century.

Manuscripts, maps and plans, engravings and photographs, coins, medals and antiques can all be viewed. Much of the old building has been preserved, including the area leading through to the Oval Room, a centrepiece that looks just like a Baudelaire poem.

You began your professional career very young. Have you got where you wanted to be in your 30s?
Yes. Although there are still things I didn’t achieve and I keep pushing myself and giving my best to try to fulfil my dreams; I’m very happy with the career I’ve had and still have.
How do you feel when you score a goal?
An immense, indescribable joy. I think people who have never scored a goal aren’t going to understand the excitement and ecstasy you feel at that moment.
Have you celebrated any titles on an aircraft? What’s it like to celebrate in the air?
Yes, I remember the Europa League with Porto on a plane; also with Atletico Madrid we celebrated getting through to the European Cup final and the Europa League that we won in Bucharest while we were in the air... On board a plane it’s an intimate celebration, with just your people... It’s really special.
Give me your tips on how to pack a suitcase well...
First I put in my trousers, laid out and with the lower half outside the suitcase. Then on top, I add t-shirts, sweaters and my other clothes all folded. When I’ve filled the suitcase, I wrap the clothes with the lower half of the trousers that was left outside. That way, your trousers don’t get creased.
What do you always carry in your luggage?
Apart from books, when I can and if I’ve got space, I carry my own pillow.
When you have to take a long haul flight, how do you spend your time on the aircraft?
I like to relax and watch a film. Reading relaxes me and helps me fall asleep, something I find difficult on planes because I’m a very light sleeper and I’m sensitive to sounds.

Los tinajones son enormes vasijas de barro y forma de globo que llevan desde la época de la colonización española serpenteando en las calles de Camagüey, en Cuba. Utilizados para almacenar el agua de lluvia, debido a las grandes sequías que aquí se sufrían hace siglos, hoy son un símbolo de esta bella ciudad cuyo casco histórico fue declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco ahora 15 años, en 2008. Cuenta la leyenda que quien bebe de ellos, regresa o se queda a vivir aquí para siempre.
“Yo te beso con anhelo, casi con mística unción, pues creo que tus gotas son de mi madre, el tierno llanto al ver que te quiero tanto, Camagüey, tu corazón”, dice el mítico poema El Tinajón de la camagüeyana Aurelia Castillo. Y es que la que fuera la antigua y coqueta villa de Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe, llamada Camagüey desde 1898, sigue manteniendo ese misticismo intacto de un legado arquitectónico de largos campanarios y elegantes edificios coloristas. Capital de una provincia de vastas llanuras, rodeada de palmerales y dos discretas montañas, la Sierra de Cubitas y la Sierra de Najasa, sus playas y cayos aún reflejan la historia que un día aquí se fraguó. Pero la ciudad de Camagüey es conocida sobre todo por su trazado laberíntico de calles estrechas que conformaron los españoles hace más de 500 años. Su Plaza de San Juan de Dios, del Carmen o la dedicada al militar cubano Ignacio Agramonte, héroe nacional del siglo XIX original de esta tierra. Aquí las iglesias se multiplican, desde su Catedral Metropolitana, a multitud de parroquias y capillas que rinden fervor a santos y beatos cubanos, entre leyendas y reliquias. También su cementerio merece una parada, con epitafios que hablan de tradiciones y de versos isleños. Y es que Camagüey podría ser un soneto en sí misma, una rima asonante a unos metros del Caribe, corazón de una provincia que recoge uno de cada cuatro kilómetros de playas de Cuba. Con estos arenales, al trovador le basta para encontrar inspiración.

ENG The “tinajónes” are huge balloon-shaped clay pots that have been winding around the streets of the Cuban city of Camagüey since the Spanish colonial era. The pots were used to store rainwater, due to the severe droughts endured here centuries ago. Nowadays they’re a symbol of this lovely city whose historic centre was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO 15 years ago, in 2008. According to the local legend, whoever drinks from them will either return or stay here forever.
“I kiss you with longing, almost with mystical anointing, because I believe that your drops are my mother’s, the tender tears you shed to see how much I love your heart, Camagüey” says the mythical poem El Tinajón by Camagüeyan poet Aurelia Castillo. What used to be the old and charming village of Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe, known as Camagüey since 1898, still retains that mysticism of an architectural legacy of tall bell towers and colourful buildings. Capital of a province of vast plains, surrounded by palm groves and two modestly-sized massifs, Sierra de Cubitas and Sierra de Najasa, its beaches and cays still reflect the history forged here in the past. Ernest Hemingway himself searched this coast for Nazi submarines during World War II, specifically in Cayo Romano, drawing on his experience in the posthumously published novel Islands in the Stream.
But the city of Camagüey is best known for its labyrinthine maze of narrow streets built by the Spaniards more
than 500 years ago. It’s also known for the squares of Plaza de San Juan de Dios, Plaza del Carmen and the square dedicated to Cuban national military hero, Ignacio Agramonte, who was born here in the 19th century. The city’s many churches range from the Metropolitan Cathedral through to a multitude of parish churches and chapels devoted to Cuban saints and the blessed, with a wealth of legends and relics. The city’s cemetery deserves a visit to read epitaphs that speak of traditions and island verses. When all’s said and done, Camagüey could itself be a sonnet, a poem set just a few metres from the Caribbean, the heart of a province that accounts for one out of every four kilometres of Cuba’s beaches. Such stretches of sandy beaches are more than enough inspiration for a wandering minstrel.

The airline is planting 1,700 trees in an area devastated by fire 18 years ago.
The loss of forest cover has accelerated at an unprecedented rate. 2022 was a particularly tough year in this regard and Air Europa, committed to the goals set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, wanted to do its bit.

La pérdida de masa forestal se ha acelerado a un ritmo sin precedentes. 2022 fue un año especialmente duro en este sentido y Air Europa, comprometida con los objetivos marcados en la Agenda 2030 para el Desarrollo Sostenible, ha querido aportar su granito de arena.
Fue en las pasadas fiestas navideñas, cuando se decora el árbol y los seres queridos se reúnen en torno a él para compartir esos días especiales, cuando Air Europa decidió celebrar una ¡Feliz y verde Navidad! Por ello, alcanzó un acuerdo con Gesforma para plantar un bosque de 1.700 árboles, a través de su iniciativa C02Gestión, quienes llevan más de diez años trabajando para preservar, restaurar y crear bosques en las zonas más desfavorecidas de España.
El lugar elegido para crear el Bosque Air Europa fue la Riba de Saelices, en Guadalajara, una zona que en 2005 quedó arrasada por las llamas en un devastador incendio en el que perdieron la vida nueve bomberos forestales y dos agentes medioambientales.
Esta plantación ocupará más de una hectárea de expansión y estará compuesta por más de un millar de especies autóctonas como son juniperus thirfera y quercus faginea, que ayudarán a recuperar la masa forestal y a enriquecer la biodiversidad del lugar. Además, gracias a sus características, el nuevo bosque podrá formar parte de los proyectos inscritos ante el MITERD (Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico), como un nuevo sumidero de CO2. Se estima que con dicha plantación se neutralizarán más de 150 toneladas de CO2 en un periodo de 50 años.
It was last Christmas, when trees are decorated and loved ones gather around them to share those special moments, that Air Europa decided to celebrate a Merry Green Christmas! It reached an agreement with Gesforma to plant a forest of 1,700 trees through its C02Gestión initiative, which has been working for more than ten years to preserve, restore and create forests in the most disadvantaged areas of Spain.
The site chosen to create the Air Europa Forest was Riba de Saelices, in Guadalajara, an area that in 2005 was razed to the ground in a devastating fire that killed nine forest firefighters and two environmental officers.
This new plantation will cover an area of over one hectare and consist of more than a thousand native species such as Juniperus thirfera and Quercus faginea, which will help to restore the forest and enrich biodiversity within the area. The characteristics of the new forest will also mean that it can be included in the projects registered with MITERD (Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge), as a new carbon sink. It is estimated that this plantation will neutralise more than 150 tonnes of CO2 over a period of 50 years.

El nombre del artista multidisciplinar César Manrique, natural de Lanzarote, luce en la parte delantera de uno de los aviones Boeing 737 de Air Europa, la flota que cubre de forma regular la red doméstica y europea de la aerolínea. El bautizo de esta aeronave se engloba dentro de las acciones que la compañía llevará a cabo para promocionar la más oriental de las Islas Canarias, cuya conectividad con la Península se ve reforzada este año por parte de Air Europa con un aumento del 15% del número de vuelos y con 15.500 plazas más en relación con el pasado ejercicio.
El CEO de Air Europa, Jesús Nuño de la Rosa, acompañado de la presidenta del Cabildo de Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, y de otras autoridades de la Isla, rindieron recientemente homenaje al que fuera icono artístico de Lanzarote bautizando con su nombre una de las aeronaves.
La apuesta que la división aérea de Globalia mantiene por Lanzarote se traduce en un total de 644 vuelos entre esta isla del archipiélago canario y la Península, desplegando una oferta de casi 120.000 asientos a lo largo de 2023. También, a lo largo de toda la temporada estival, Air Europa unirá Lanzarote con Barcelona y con Santiago de Compostela, respectivamente.
A todo ello, se suma la ruta entre Lanzarote y Bilbao, que mantendrá las tres frecuencias semanales actuales, y la ruta entre Lanzarote y Madrid que, desde mediados de junio, doblará las frecuencias pasando de dos a cuatro a la semana.

The name of the Lanzarote-born multi-disciplinary artist César Manrique is displayed on the front of one of Air Europa’s Boeing 737 aircraft, the fleet that regularly covers the airline’s domestic and European network. The christening of this aircraft is part of the company’s promotional activities for the easternmost Canary Islands, whose connectivity with mainland Spain has been enhanced this year by Air Europa with a 15% increase in the number of flights and 15,500 more seats compared to last year.
The CEO of Air Europa, Jesús Nuño de la Rosa, accompanied by the president of the Lanzarote Island Council, María Dolores Corujo, and other authorities from the island, recently paid tribute to the former artistic icon from Lanzarote by naming one of the aircraft after him.
The commitment that Globalia’s airline division has made to Lanzarote translates into a total of 644 flights between this island in the Canary Islands archipelago and the Spanish mainland, offering almost 120,000 seats throughout 2023. La compañía movió 56,6 millones de kilos a lo largo del año, lo que representa un 78,54% más que en 2021. Si bien hace dos años buena parte de las rutas no estaban activadas a consecuencia de la pandemia, las cifras de 2022 ya superan a las que se registraron en 2019, incluso en facturación, doblando la de aquel ejercicio. Para 2023, las expectativas pasan por mantener el actual volumen de carga e ingresos y aumentar los destinos disponibles.
El éxito de Air Europa Cargo desde su creación en 2018 se apoya, en primer lugar, en su modelo de gestión operativa, caracterizado por la flexibilidad y la innovación a través de la optimización de procesos. Así, la compañía ha digitalizado sus procesos de reserva con la incorporación de la plataforma CargoWALLET de CargoAi, ha optimizado la paletización de espacios para una mejor organización de la carga mediante tecnología digital y está incorporando a todos los países del continente americano en los que opera al estándar e-Air Waybill de IATA, para la gestión digital de los procesos de carga aérea.
Por otra parte, ha sido fundamental el proceso de unificación y ampliación de flota de Air Europa, que ha supuesto la incorporación de aviones con mayor capacidad en operaciones de largo radio, como es el caso del Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Actualmente Air Europa es la aerolínea con mayor movimiento de correo postal desde España, con más de 4,2 millones de envíos frente a los 2,9 millones de 2021. La unidad está trabajando ya en mejoras, como nuevos contenedores (ULD) o certificaciones para el transporte de productos farmacéuticos.
Air Europa Cargo opera con más de 65 países, no solo en Europa y América, sino también en África, Oriente Medio y Asia en virtud de los acuerdos que mantiene con otras compañías.
Air Europa Cargo, the air cargo division at Air Europa, consolidated its activity in 2022 with a significant increase both in kilos transported and turnover. FlightPath3D is the flight map Air Europa has incorporated into the entertainment systems on its B-787s. It is the most advanced map and shows realistic and detailed representations of the aircraft you are flying in on a 3D terrestrial background with the details of your route. It is interactive and you can navigate in it to investigate data on your flight.
