Desperate measures

As we go to press with this edition the UK is experiencing its hottest day on record. Well done to all of the installers out there who soldiered on despite the heat while the rest of us sat indoors moaning about it.

Make sure your customers know about the increased threats they face and that they are not relying on unsuitable or outdated methods while the nation gets back on track.

As this edition went to press we were in the midst of the selection process for the next Prime Minister. By now you’ll know who that is, but whoever is PM takes over when many are struggling and desperate for change You can’t please everyone all of the time - that it the mantra of today’s politician who, on one hand is trying to address key issues while on the other desperately trying to avoid a Twitter storm by saying something that a tiny number of the population considers ‘offensive’ resulting in being ‘cancelled’, sacked and out the door without really knowing why. There are many key issues on the table that need addressing including illegal immigration, the NHS, the green agenda and others, but the most prominent is the current cost of living and the rising costs of goods across the board from food to fuel. This crisis is leading experts to predict a summer/autumn of rising crime levels if the new PM doesn’t tackle some concerns, such as the price of a tank of petrol straight away. This means that thefts across the board couldbe on the up for the time being which comes as no surprise to any of us; desperate people do desperate things. Security systems therefore will be heavily relied upon if the predictions are correct. Video surveillance manufacturers have spent a lot of R&D time on developing systems that can add business benefits such as stock control, thermal behaviour analysis etc and these are a real bonus for retail managers, but the main focus will probably need to be on loss prevention for the time being. We all know this yet some stores are still failing to protect stock and staff properly even with the prior knowledge that high value items will be the target of thieves. Only recently we saw the Apple store in Covent Garden robbed by an armed mob running off with kit. The Police response was to ask for any footage of the robbery that the public may have taken on their phones. That is surely not what we mean by video security best practice.

Paul O’Riley – AskNicely Review – 15 July Tweet us @CSLGroupLtd Fortus has demonstrated significant growth in recent years. How has this been achieved? We have had some clear objectives over the past few years alongside our private-equity partners. The management team have identified areas in the market where we can continue to grow both organically and by acquisition. The fire and security market is constantly evolving and a major element of our success has been our ability to deliver the latest technologies and services to our growing customer base. How important are acquisitions for business growth? Organic growth is very difficult to achieve in a short amount of time. For businesses looking to grow quickly, acquisitions are a very viable option. Lots of businesses in our sector have been around for over 20 years and naturally, some are looking to either take the next step or pass the company on to others. We have seen many changes of ownership throughout the sector, against the backdrop of the globalisation of the world, and remote management of teams and processes improving all the time. In our experience, acquisitions have worked very well. In many cases, it takes out the competition between companies and means we are working together to focus efforts and energy. What is it about the Fire and Security industry that appeals to investors?

The characteristics of fire and security companies appeal to many investors, particularly as many continued to trade, or have managed to recover, after the recent pandemic. Resilience and consistency –month to month and year on year – is what investors want to see when they are committing large amounts of money. The recurring revenues provided by monitoring and maintenance contracts (enjoyed by our customers) also appeal to investors as they can see that, barring any growth in attrition, businesses have a clear path to continued success. How important is technology in your ongoing growth strategies? One of our focuses is ensuring we are always ahead of the curve in terms of technology. We want to be the early adopters of new technology, working with our partners to test and onboard solutions as quickly as we can. We are also identifying technology from outside the sector. We are embracing this and making sure it works for our customers before we release it. We have identified innovations such as using AI in CCTV to reduce false alarms. This all focuses on enabling our customers to provide a better service to end users. Smart Homes, Smart Buildings and the wider IoT market are also offering opportunities for our sector and we are positioning ourselves at the forefront of this.

The interview that gets the facts from the top IN ASSOCIATION WITH CSL This month Simon Banks talks to Mark Brophy, Chief Executive Officer at Fortus. A leading distributor across the UK and Ireland, Fortus partners with many well known fire and security manufacturers.

Store security managers and loss prevention teams need to tackle an array of shrinkage challenges including staff and returns fraud, sweethearting, deceptive self-scanning, organised crime gangs, steal-to-order rackets, shoplifting, and bogus injury claims. Retailers and their systems integration partners should collaborate to identify the biggest direct cost to the bottom line, and target the problem strategically, says IDIS: often a video surveillance pilot will reveal gaps in security, and unforeseen vulnerabilities.

Video solutions have evolved to target retailers’ key challenges, with a wide choice of camera models available to blend with the aesthetics of every outlet; easy-to-use VMS with optional federation services allowing local control plus centralised management; and mobile tools and apps that make it easy for managers to stay in control remotely.

technology – from streamlining back-of-store operations to building customer loyalty. For systems integrators, consultants and value-added resellers (VARs) who understand the pressures that retailers now face, and who are tuned-into new ways video tech can be used to support stores’ profitability, the sector offers significant opportunities, IDIS says. Today’s more affordable and more capable solutions are playing an important role by enabling more efficient stock delivery and tracking; improving customer experience (CX); driving operational efficiency through better intelligence; integrating bricks-and-mortar with online operations; and reducing losses from high staff turnover, shrinkage, and fraud. This is helping to offset the challenges from rising inflation the squeeze on consumer spending power. In addition to facing a turbulent economic landscape, today’s retailers still must deal with the age-old threats to profitability posed by internal and external shrinkage.

THE BOTTOM LINE

“Every time I call CSL tech support I get outstanding service and a quick resolution to any issues. Your team are superb”.

PRODUCT

The PNM-C7083 multi-directional camera is a dual dome device that provides two 2MP views that can be individually set to suit locations while requiring only one network lead. The cameras provide AI object classification analytics and low light operation. They are IP66 & NEMA4X environmentally rated with an IK10 impact protection rating. Overall dimensions are 215 (W) x 135 (D) x 93.2 (H) with a weight of 1330g. Getting started The camera must be powered from a PoE+ source that can either be a suitably rated network switch port or midspan injector. The camera requires a 20W PoE+ source with a typical demand of 15.5W though this did hover around 20W when all four infrared LEDs are manually powered to maximum brightness.Thecamera has an aluminium casing that is mounted onto a backing plate for wall or ceiling fixing. Firstly, to gain access, the dome cover must be removed by releasing the six captive Torx security screws. This cover weighs just under 350 grams and has no securing cable. Once removed the main camera assembly can be separated from the back plate by releasing two captive Torx security screws. The manual adjustments to Pan, Tilt, and Rotate the two camera modules can be clearly identified on the assembly and the PoE+ RJ45 connector at the top of the unit has good cable access with a knockout for conduit connection.

Opposite this connector is a slot for the micro-SD card. This is a single slot and can accept up to 512GB cards. At the bottom of the unit is a reset switch to the left, and at the right is a type ‘B’ USB connector that can be used to temporarily add a Wi-Fi dongle for engineer video monitoring (1280 x 720) using the Wisenet application on a mobile device. Operation Once powered up, the camera is initially DHCP enabled so will be allocated an address in the current network range, if not, its default IP address of 192.168.1.100 will be used. The Hanwha Wisenet Device Manager software can be used to search for the camera on the network and this also allows initial password setting and fixed addressUsingsetting.abrowser to connect to the camera gives full access to the image and configuration. At first connection a reasonably strong password entry is enforced. This must be at least 8 characters using three character types or at least ten with two character types. The camera modules can be independently manually panned from 0 to 355°, tilted through 0 to 78°, and rotated 0 to 180°. Focus and zoom are motorised and set through the browser or app. The lenses are 3-6mm varifocal giving a wide field of view of 107° (H) x 57° (V) to tele 56.3° (H) x 31.5° (V). Up to 5 lines of 17 characters text can be placed on screen plus time and date in all main formats. Five NTP options are given or a preferred address can be entered. A range of settings for extending the dynamic range of the camera (120dB quoted) for backlit scenes maintain contrast range and reduce image noise.Up to 6 Privacy zones and up to 8 motion detection zones can be allocated.

The IR emitters are mounted at the edges of the assembly and can be controlled to suit the wall or ceiling mounting arrangement in order to minimise image flare. The AI detection capabilities are impressive with selectable Person, Face, Vehicle, and Licence plate categories. The vehicle type can be selected from Car, Truck, Bicycle, Bus, and Motorcycle. Each type can be added or omitted from the selection to suit. In testing the system differentiated well between vehicle types and could capture cyclists and pedestrians whilst ignoring vehicle traffic if required. If events are recorded to the SD card or a local NAS, they can be replayed within the browser with a straightforward transport control and twenty four hour event timeline. Up to 32 detection rules if used can be filtered for replay.

Conclusion Although the panel itself is plastic, it is well manufactured and robust. The housing has been well thought out, with cutouts and cable entry holes providing easy access to terminals and onboard connections. The standoffs supplied with the panel can provide a deeper space behind than most others on the market, making it easier for cable management and surface rear entry. The system can be utilised for a multi premises site, allowing for 4 partitions to be set up within the system configuration, with each partition having the ability to have 3 setting options. The front plate does not have any screws to hold it to its base, instead it incorporates a moulded catch which tested to be quite durable, meaning that there is no additional special tool or specialised screwdriver to access the device.

The overall build quality of the device is good, there is no areas of the device that would be seen as “Flimsy” or liable to break easily, and with the ability to fit inside window and door frames, additional protection can be achieved.

The sensor is suitable for any wireless installation where doors and windows want to be protected for both opening and physical attack. Though, this would not be suitable for final exit doors as a means to set and unset your alarm system. Conclusion The design on the device is very stylish and low profile, and would look the part in any door or window installation requiring it to be surface mounted. The device comes in 3 standard colours to fit in with most aesthetics – White, Brown and Anthracite.Togoone step further, as the design is so low profile, it can easily be hidden in the fame of uPVC windows and doors, providing a completely “Out of sight” installation.

This is a compact wireless shock sensor that is described as fitting flexibly out of sight within uPVC window or door frames, or surface mounted with a low profile and “pleasing” design. With quick installation and calibration features such as auto-orientation and pin-hole sensitivity setup with LED indication, the NanoShock is a Grade 2 accelerometer device promoted with excellent wireless range, 2-years battery life and available in white, brown and anthracite. It also features a conformally coated PCB, which ensures the stability and longevity of its electronic components in more changeable environments, for reliable protection. Getting started Set-up is completed through an onboard “learn” button that is the same as all other Pyronix wireless based devices. But there is one smart feature that will allow you to learn the device without having to remove the front plate which can be a time saver during a panel change or upgradeCalibrationetc. is also straight forward, and once again, doesn’t require the removal of the lid to set. Using the pinhole key supplied with the device, you are able to change between the 5 sensitivity settings shown by LED indication/flashing highlighting the selected level. It should be noted here that if you are using the provided sticky pads to mount the device, sensitivity showed to have been significantly decreased due to vibration being absorbed before meeting the device analyser. If instead, you are mounting it to the opening leaf of the door or window, the accelerometer in the device will pick up on the movement rather than the vibration. This device has an auto orientation, so direction you mount the device is notPleaseimportant.beaware, that in both instances, if you are not securing the device using the breakaway tab on the base plate then it will not be compliant to Grade 2, you need to be able to monitor the rear tamper for device removal on all wireless devices. Performance When secured using the supplied fixings, and correctly calibrated, the device worked great. Both as a surface mounted shock sensor and within the door/window frame as an accelerometer device providing minimum false activations during testing.

How is the security recruitment market today? The market at the moment is incredibly buoyant. It's no secret that there's a massive demand for engineers, sales people and project managers especially now that projects are back on track. The well-publicised coverage of the skills shortage has led to a current imbalance on salary expectations however. We carried out a study and over the last two or three years, the average salary hasn't changed yet engineers believe that they're worth more now. I'm not belittling engineers that do a great job, but it doesn’t help when they are pushing their salary expectations up and saying they are getting paid more than they really are. My message to the employees is just stick to your guns because those salaries aren't being paid. In terms of the next generation, the work that Skills for Security is doing is absolutely fantastic in bringing on new talent, but it takes time for these engineers to come through as apprentices. I think engineers realise that the short supply means there is a demand so they're trying to push the wages up even though the average salaries that we're seeing aren't too dissimilar to what they were 12-18 months ago. Installers themselves need to look beyond the salary and put more of a focus on retention. The biggest problem for all employers that lose staff, especially new staff, is the on-boarding element. We had an instance recently when one of our clients, not in the fire and security sector I should point out, hired a guy and left him sitting at a desk for a week. No one really spoke to him so he walked out because they didn't on-board him properly. When you do get staff in, treat them correctly with training, investment and development in order to hold onto them. These are the key drivers for people and why they move jobs - it's not always about money. Is it the same picture for security sales people? Yes and in fact I would say that good salespeople in security are in more short supply than engineers. Ultimately, if you're a good salesperson, you've either you've got such a strong position in the company you're with that you're not going to leave because you're walking away from the commission or, you're that good you've gone out and set up on your “The market at the moment is incredibly buoyant. INTERVIEW (continued from page 23) “Being a security engineer is commitmenta it's not just a 9-5 job. You are going to be called out at two o'clock in the morning, you're going to have to work late and you've got to start early in the morning so you've got to be prepared to have that work ethic”

own. That leaves a big void and again my recommendation there is to look at adjacent industries and also internally for a commercially astute engineer that you could progress into sales. That's the journey that lots of people have taken, including myself, which allows you to grow your own salespeople. Is the skills shortage situation improving? I think it's stagnant because those coming through apprenticeships will take time to develop plus we’ve got people leaving the industry through retirement etc so I don't see it overly improving just yet which is why targeting adjacent industries for talent can be a help. My other theory is that we’ve got the pandemic generation coming into the job market now and I do feel that a lot of people have become quite lazy. In the security industry, being a security engineer is a commitment it's not just a 9-5 job. You are going to be called out at two o'clock in the morning, you're going to have to work late and you've got to start early in the morning so you've got to be prepared to have that work ethic and that's the bit I think people aren't aware of. I'm of an age that when I left school we lived to work but I think that the approach to all types of jobs across the board in this country has shifted to work to live and that is a big problem. The security industry is also a lifestyle choice as well as a job because you've got to be committed to it almost 24/7 and maybe young people aren't looking for that sort of work anymore.

How does the security sector compare to others you work with? We also work in the building services sector and the picture is exactly the same there. In terms of lift engineers the salary demands are going up but that is because when it comes to lift and escalator work you need to be NVQ Level 3 qualified so there is the issue of the value of these qualifications. I would say the salary demands in adjacent sectors are worse than they are in the security industry and that is why we are also seeing rising demands. Are companies receptive to looking outside of security for engineers? No I don't think they are as receptive as they used to be. People want a ready-made engineer that they can drop in and do the work straightaway, but years ago the industry was fed by people coming in from the adjacent industries. I was a communications equipment instrument maker who moved into the security industry because it was all low voltage kit; I had on-the-job training and then went out on my own. That's the typical path for electricians coming into the security industry and I think people have lost their way with that approach and that's something that needs to be readdressed. If I was a security installer, those areas are where I would be looking for the talent to bring into the industry. How should employers approach finding engineers? The first thing that companies need to consider is why someone would come and work for them.

What about the job hunters themselves? My advice to the engineers is to need to look at themselves as their own product or brand and they need to ask for training all of the time. Ask for it because if you've got that on your CV you'll be a more valuable asset to the company that you're working for. And keep in mind, the grass isn't always greener! If it is a monetary move you are after, speak to your current employer and see if there's any movement there and if you want more training, identify what that is and ask for it rather thanlooking for a new employer. Is somebody with a CV featuring lots of different companies harder to place? If you do an online search for the average tenure someone stays at the likes of Apple or Google it's about 18 months, so people don't hang around for too long in jobs these days. Although I would say there are two sides of this to consider. You could have a really good employee that has moved every couple of years so employers should look at the CV for progression. The other side of that coin is when someone has stayed at the same place for ten years they might have limited knowledge, but again look at their career ladder. So it's a double edged sword really. In the past employees would ask for someone with a minimum of five years’ experience in one job or not having jumped ship too much, but that happens less now because people do recognise the value of gained experience. The average tenure in a job is probably two, to two and a half years these days so that is the sweet spot for an employerif someone's coming up to two years they need to be looking at how to keep this person and develop a retention strategy. So how does the future look for the sector? ?

We see social media posts from people looking for engineers saying that they offer a competitive salary, a van, uniform, holidays etc yet those things are taken for granted. Think outside the box and look at why someone would want to join you. Highlight the story of someone you already have on board and show how they have developed as a result of working for you, because that's the bit that new people will buy into. If you have someone who is now a lead engineer or commissioning engineer who you have trained up from a lower level then that is a more positive message than offering the same standard package as everyone else. Have a defined career ladder with set milestones for engineers so that they have targets to hit to meet their aspirations, otherwise someone else will come along and offer that progression.

I think we will continue to get the pull through of new talent into the sector because it is an interesting market to work in. Speak to any engineer or salesperson and they will always have stories for you. We ask people for their ‘brag file’ work – for example mine was that I looked after Eurotunnel for four years, so everyone's got at least one project they can brag about and stories to share. It's this kind of thing that attracts new people as well as the advanced technology like AI and analytics. Everyone in the security industry has been somewhere special in their career, they've not just sat in an office all day, every day, so it's not a boring mundane industry. You can go all over the world working in the security industry - it is a very attractive industry.

I do think there will be a correction in the market when it comes to salary expectations because it is unsustainable as it is. Project prices aren't increasing at the same rate as people’s salary expectations, but, and this is a bit controversial, I think ultimately we're not going to need as many engineers in the future because the product is going to be increasingly more reliable and self-diagnostic. The closest engineer will be sent along with the right part at the right time to fix the problem, so the need and demand for engineers is going to become less due to technology. My advice to the engineers is to need to look at themselves as their own product or brand and they need to ask for training all of the time. Ask for it because if you've got that on your CV you'll be a more valuable asset

Wireless GSM technology is quickly becoming a property management essential. It’s not just for new builds either – retrospectively incorporating the latest technology into older residences can be hugely beneficial to housing professionals. According to Suzanne Fanton, International Marketing Manager at Intratone, introducing new wireless access control technology into existing buildings is a great way to improve the tenant experience too, while also streamlining operations and cutting down any inefficiencies.

Let’s delve deeper into the three ways that GSM technology can add value to older buildings: No wires, less hassle One of the main benefits of GSM technology is the lack of plastic handsets or traditional, cabled intercoms. It’s a simple way to make older buildings look more modern, as GSM is a completely wireless, digital system. Retrofitting new technology also makes access control easier and more intuitive to operate for residents. Tenants can control access to their homes via their preferred digital device or landline – and they don’t even need to be at home, which is an added bonus for security.

Repairing vs replacing Clearly, the security of tenants always comes first. And so, when old intercoms and coded keypads become faulty or obsolete, solving any access control issues quickly becomes a priority for housing professionals. But is it better to repair the damaged device – often a temporary or costly fix – or install a brand-new one? It can be a big undertaking to re-cable entire apartment blocks and install new handsets into individual flats for repairs or new wired devices. But with the latest wireless access control technology installation is fast and doesn’t disturb tenants. It’s easy to see why many are choosing to replace rather than repair. Cut down admin time Access control technology in older buildings can be quite admin-intensive – retrofitting new technology can offer a more time-efficient solution. All of Intratone’s wireless solutions are GSM-based and linked to a secure remote online management system. For housing professionals, this means being able to oversee all access to the block from their own office or place of work, in real-time. They can carry out day-to-day administration tasks in just a few clicks, making instant changes to key fobs, flat numbers and tenant information. This can be a game-changer for streamlining workflows, as no site visit is needed. Out with the old Retrofitting wireless GSM technology in older or existing buildings is about more than simply updating their looks. It’s an effective, fast and hassle-free way for housing professionals to future-proof their buildings’ access control for the long-term. And it doesn’t have to be costly, either.

The budget benefits of GSM

• There is a common misconception that wireless systems are complex to install. On the contrary, they allow for easier, faster and safer installations because there’s no need for extensive recabling.

• Wireless credentials ensure that system set-up is hassle-free too, with no need to disturb tenants and enter individual flats to install handsets or cables.

Perfect for current social distancing measures and speedy installations. With the latest wireless access control

• GSM-enabled wireless devices allow installers to expand their product offering to include an innovative, digital-first solution, providing customers with the very latest in property management technology – a real selling point!

www.psimagazine.co.uk INTERVIEW

Sam Cherri

How has business been for you recently? This year started very well, we've experienced a couple of months where I would describe it as being steady, rather than busy, but I think that’s been due to hesitancy because of inflation. Perhaps the end users who are looking to start projects have just held back a little, but it is definitely picking up again as we have seen growth in the last month and a half. Funnily enough, even though we “lost” the last couple of years due to the pandemic, it hasn't really appeared to affect the business in the long term. I always consider security as a necessity in bad times and a luxury in good times! On the scale of things, I’d say we've done very well and the signs are very promising. When it comes to sales have you seen any trends? We sell intruder, video entry, CCTV and shortly will be supplying fire safety systems, but for me the biggest change in technology buying patterns has been with CCTV as more and more people are moving towards IP – but only when they can. The factor here is price, because installers need to make a sale and even though people have been saying for years that IP is going to take over and analogue HD is only a temporary stop gap, we've all been surprised at how long it has lasted in the market and that manufactures are still developing it. So I don't think analogue HD is going away anytime soon but eventually the sector will turn fully to IP even though IP is actually getting more and more expensive as new cameras have increased functionality such as AI and analytics built-in. You've got a brand called Serage in your portfolio, is that your own range? We're a wholesaler of Hikvision and have been for four years, but we do have our own brand in Serage which has been around now for over ten years and is really popular with our customers. Presumably having your own brand is a big investment, why did you choose to do that? We invested in Serage before some of the big brands we have today came into the UK market and in those days many distributors had their own ranges. The difference for us is that subsequently most people dropped their ownbrand products or reduced the focus on it when they signed up with the big names, but we didn't drop ours. It was so well respected that we kept going with it and we will continue to do so because G-TEC is the home of Serage!

A personal distribution service 29

“I always consider security as a necessity in bad times and a luxury in good times! On the scale of things, I’d say we've done very well and the signs are very promising”

This year distributor G-TEC is celebrating its 20th Anniversary so PSI caught up with Director Sam Cherri at the Hounslow premises to find out about the ethos behind the company he began back in 2002

How do you make people aware of a brand they may not know? The people who use Serage, and have done so over the years, are a very loyal customer base because they've worked with it and seen the product in action and know what it can do. In the last three or four years our focus with Serage has been more with direct marketing and workshops, however all in all I think selling a big brand and having an own-brand range of products goes hand-in-hand and works well for both of them.

“What's unique about us is that we don't have account numbers or need product codes; we deal with people on a personal level with a range of products we know very well”

A lot of people, particularly my wife, have asked me that and at the time everybody thought I was crazy! I used to work as an international sales manager for an American company and while I've always had it in me to start my own business, getting into the security industry was more of an accident. I left the video conferencing company and did a deal with them to take on the London area with their technology. Two weeks later, they changed management and the new team decided I couldn’t continue with that deal, so I was without a job. I then met someone who introduced me to CCTV and I did some installation work for a year and a half and then started doing distribution on my own in a very, very small scale starting from my bedroom, then moving to bigger offices as required. What were your goals in the early days –have they changed? People always ask me how I managed to grow a successful company without taking money from banks and without any savings and I believe that the key was to look after the existing customers properly rather than worrying about gaining new ones and to always think in the long-term. I established G-TEC to sell solely to installers or to sub distribution, not to end users, and I tell everybody in the company that we are all in sales, even if you are the receptionist. If you are not giving a good service on all fronts the customer will go somewhere else and that's always been my belief, even from when I was on my own. Everybody here, especially the salespeople or people in technical have got to feel that they work for the customer but G-TEC pays their wages.

30

You started the business in 2002. Why, were you an installer?

INTERVIEW (continued from page 29)

In addition to technology, what do installers tell you they want? The main request is for product knowledge. Installers want to know what the technology can do and if it can do something beyond what they are already using it for. Our training academy is always really busy and we use that facility to introduce new products and practices to installers and to people connected vertically with the industry such as electricians wanting to move into fitting CCTV on a professional level. We’ve had plenty of people undertake a course, who then end up being customers as a result, which is great because they will take that product knowledge out into the market and push it to their customers. For example at the moment we are doing a lot of training with Fermax systems and have been oversubscribed for those sessions. Is there anything different about G-TEC? I always say if you are going to be successful you have to think that your competitor is at least as good as you, if not better. What's unique about us is that we don't have account numbers or need product codes; we deal with people on a personal level with a range of products we know very well. We know all of our customers personally and we engage with them in a way that is not just as a business transaction. Obviously we keep everything very professional, www.psimagazine.co.uk

“I’m actually very optimistic for installers because I think the trend going forward will be for people to rely more on installers”professional

www.psimagazine.co.uk 31 but our business runs on relationships. We're like a small family distribution company that sells all over the UK and all of our communication and engagement with customers is genuine - I don’t employ people who are like robots with customers! Another key point is that you won’t find any pricing online for Serage technology. Yes, you’ll be able to see the products online, but there are no costs listed on the internet. If an installer buys Serage from us, they can do so knowing that their customer will not be able to find out how much it was - that is a very strict policy we have had right from the beginning. Is there one piece of advice that Sam of 2020 would give Sam of 2002? I'd say “Trust in what you think more” as there are times when you listen to others too much just because you think they are more experienced than you are and so often it turns out that what you were thinking was right all along. Believe in yourself and your own choices more. Where do you think the market will go in the future? I’m actually very optimistic for installers because I think the trend going forward will be for people to rely more on professional installers especially as technology is increasingly involving AI. Thanks to the internet people have been able to buy a security system for themselves and, because they do some DIY, assume that they will be able to fit it. What tended to happen was they either bought the kit and then it sat in the corner for six months or if they are a bit of a geek they set it up at its most basic level to get notifications on their smartphone for example and then realised it wasn’t really fit for purpose. That is not going to happen in the future because systems are becoming more advanced and will need technical knowledge in order to set up functions such as the AI and the analytics – systems are not “plug and play” anymore. So I'm very optimistic that advances in technology will mean installers will only get busier in the future.

David (SfS MD) met James and said, “James is an inspiration and a reminder that the fire and security sector can be a career of choice for everyone, regardless of age, gender or other challenges. In the short time I met him, James was proof of that, and I am excited to watch his journey over the years.” Skills for Security look forward to welcoming James back into the centre for challenge number two; maybe we will put him through his EPA (endpoint assessment) which is the fire and security competency-based exam to see how he fares. You can follow James on YouTube, where he posts regular training footage and product reviews; he is undoubtedly one to watch. This incredible young man has blown us away with his in-depth knowledge of the industry, and we believe James will have a great career in the industry. At just 12 years old, James has gone on to plan his route into sector. He has even begun making plans for his future company (JP Fire and Security), where he will offer high-end fire and security installations throughout the UK. We do not doubt that James will make this a massive success. this,

David Scott of Skills for Security would like to introduce you all to an incredible young person he recently met a video ofvisitJames’shere

We decided to invite James into our Warrington centre after first being introduced to him by Managing Director Matt Gilmartin, Concept Smoke Screen, to look around and talk to our tutors to gain more insight into his knowledge and ability. Quoting Matt, “To say I was impressed by James’ knowledge of our industry and technical aptitude is a bit like saying the Queen has been on the throne for a little while. To put it another way, he’s astonishing.”

James, a 12-year-old student studying at Pontville School, an independent specialist school based in Lancashire, attended our Skills for Security training centre in Warrington to run a mini project installing Texecom Premier Elite, CSL signalling and a Concept Smoke Fog Unit. At only 12, James has spent the last two years selfteaching himself all things fire and security, where he has thousands of pounds of equipment in his bedroom. James proudly showed the Skills for Security team, and he has agreed for us to share, the impressive collection of bell boxes and fire and security equipment installed throughout his bedroom.

Once introduced, the team at SfS wanted to do something a bit different, so on his first visit, he was provided with an operational requirements document, and from there, he was invited back one week later, where he was asked to plan and execute the installation of an intruder alarm system, signalling unit and fog generator. James, at only 12, took the challenge head-on, claiming the whole thing could be done from scratch in as little as two hours. James didn’t disappoint and arrived one week later with an equipment list, tools, manuals, and a plan to succeed.

Promoting professionalism

STANDARDS

Setting the standard As many professional organisations will know, spearheading this type of progression isn’t without its challenges. Ultimately for lasting change to take place, benefits to registrants/members must be both visible and effective in improving outcomes for individuals, consumers, and businesses alike. But thanks to the growth of respected membership and registration bodies such as the SSAIB, NSI, and CTSP we’re slowly starting to see change across the industry.

SSAIB’s remit as a certification body for example is to protect the interests of the consumer (purchasers, specifiers, and end users) by requiring registered organisations to meet criteria appropriate to the services they provide. The UKAS-accredited NSI aims to secure the highest standards of safety and security for buyers of commercial and domestic fire and security systems, through independent, third-party audit and certification. CTSP meanwhile was formed as a means of recognising the competency and integrity of technical and electronic security professionals fulfilling roles in the security and fire systems sectors. This includes: engineers/technicians (installation, maintenance and commissioning), system designers, auditors and consultants. It allows consumers, employers and contractors to search a national register to validate professional competency. In order to be accepted onto the CTSP Register, applicants must meet entry criteria and supplement their application with supporting evidence.

Rhiannon Limbert of Linx International Group talks to PSI about the importance of installation companies using standards to measure progress 35

• A commitment to excellence

www.psimagazine.co.uk

By definition, professionalism involves consistently achieving high standards, both visibly and "behind the scenes" –whatever your role or profession. Whilst there are no ‘official rules’ to professionalism within security, there are ways to measure progress and ability. Measuring ourselves against verifiable standards represents four things:

Much has been written about personal development in recent times. Examples of unethical behaviour from rogue traders have perpetuated feelings of distrust, wariness, and a general lack of confidence within the security consumer market. This is then unfairly painted across the technical security profession when the majority of technical security professionals are very good at what they do.

Sector-wide improvements By advocating for technical security professionals to commit to a framework for raising professional standards, we are simultaneously advocating for sector-wide improvements which ultimately protect the consumer. This is achievable by having a welldefined set of professional standards from which an individual can measure themselves against. For example, for a professional to become CTSP Registered the applicant must either carry formal accreditations relevant to their role or demonstrate competency by submission of a portfolio of evidence meeting the required standard of qualification and/or experience. Renewal requires evidence of Continuous Professional Development. By investing the time to become formally registered with any membership body demonstrates an individual’s commitment to bettering themselves whilst upholding the integral value of that body.

• A dedication to the commitment of continual training and development

Examples of unethical behaviour from rogue traders perpetuatedhave feelings of distrust, wariness, and a general lack of confidence within the security consumer market

• A marker of sector development

But what happens if we don’t have standards to measure progress? What if there’s nothing upholding the security industry to a higher, better standard? As we cannot measure ourselves against ourselves, what is ‘good’ that isn’t subjective to the individual person?

Future issues

What if there’s nothing upholding the security industry to a higher, better standard?

Each of the above exists to safeguard either the employer, the contractor, or the end-user from low standards. To the consumer, it identifies that company/individual as being authentic, and able to contract out work or equipment to upheld standards, otherwise their membership could be revoked. It’s almost like an insurance policy for the consumer who can rest assured that anyone who carries one of the above certifications is working to an established bar of distinction. Benefits of membership then are experienced by both the individual and/or the business. Professionally speaking, certification (or registration) from any of these companies is a mark of excellence.

Defining measures

• Customers have access to high quality

www.psimagazine.co.uk STANDARDS 36 (continued from page 35)

What happens if we don’t have standards to measure progress?

The opportunities and challenges facing UK security professions are great. With the advancement of technology and a DIY attitude perpetuated by the Covid-19 pandemic there are numerous opportunities for people to take technical security into their own novice hands. Professional bodies have a crucial role to play in making sure their members are able to seize the opportunities and squarely meet the challenges. At a time when the security industry is growing at an unprecedented rate it’s as much in the industry’s developmental interest as it is the employees to uphold professional standards andInregulation.theory, the benefits of the technical security sector promoting this attitude should be felt by all:

Peter Jones, one of the Directors of the Security Institute, widely advocates for reliable standards to measure one’s professional development and abilities against and for him, CTSP is one of the bodies facilitating this: “Like it says on the tin, this is a standard aimed at the technical security profession. Without standards we cannot measure anything. As professionals we should be constantly progressing and, from time to time, checking ourselves against the designated membership body or standard we’re holding ourselves to, be it a professional accreditation, training qualification, or the completion of your CPD requirement for the year. In this way, we can measure and take responsibility for our own growth.”

But there’s also a secondary argument for the support of using standards to measure progress. Whilst it’s imperative for the individual to continually develop and check themselves, verifiable standards act as a barometer for the forward momentum of the wider security sector. It can be viewed as a marker for industry development and how far we have progressed since the industry first began. Thirty years ago, there would be very few ways to gauge whether your intruder alarm fitter was certified, competent and legit. Much would be taken on trust and word of mouth. There were certainly very few training certificates from verified centres. With the advocating for improving the sector – backed by these respected bodies - we can look back and say: “Yep, this is how we used to do it, but now we know better and do it this way for XYZ reasons.”

For truly bespoke solutions we partner with Tyco – Software House, we’re a C*Cure Advanced Integrator and have been for over 8 years. For traditional security products we work closely with Gallagher, Pelco and Avigilon. For cloud-based products we have some exciting partnerships with Rhombus, Cisco Meraki and Openpath. We have seen that the traditional security manufacturers are now developing cloud-based solutions so it will be great to see what they come up with and how we can strengthen our relationships with them.

Every month we talk to an NSI approved installer about life in the business. This month we take a look back at what installers told us recently when we asked: Do you have any “go to” products or manufacturers?

together raising standards

Over the years we have built some significant relationships with key distributors alongside long term manufacturer relationships. We believe we work in loyal partnership on both accounts, giving and gaining business from each other. And we hope this will continue for the future success of the supply chain as a whole. We work with partners who we know can provide our customers with innovative new security technology products, that embrace the latest innovations alongside the need for remote and mobile-first monitoring. These include but not inclusive to Texecom for intruder and Salto, Paxton and BPT for access control. We embrace Avigilon and Dahua Technology for CCTV. We are also very proud to have recently become part of the Honeywell Gent Network, with exclusive access to supply its extensive range of fire detection systems. Each supplied to the highest possible standards to deliver most advanced fire detection and alarm systems. For CCTV we like Avigilon and we are really impressed with Ava, a fairly new company but their systems enable you to do a lot of security and non-security analytics. Also in CCTV we like to use the Milestone platform. For access control we are channel partners with Gallagher plus we also install Paxton technology because it delivers every time. Another company whose products we specify for access control is Salto.

Jamie Allam – IPMSL

We install a lot of Mirasys and Avigilon servers, and a lot of Avigilon and Axis cameras on CCTV. However the beauty of the Mirasys is you can pretty much pick and choose any ONVIF camera so a lot of our sites have a real mixture of manufacturer cameras based on their functionality, performance and client’s budget. With regards to intruder alarms we install Texecom and Galaxy for our commercial clients and Orisec and Ajax for our domestic clients. Again the reasoning behind these choices is purely down to the connectivity and what we can do via the software available. Access control all depends on the integration its normally Paxton, RBH or Brivo again its all dependant on the client’s requirements.WeareaFireclass partner so use this where possible but again depending on client requirements, and the solution and what it is we are protecting we would be happy to install any open protocol solution.

Meet the installer – Q&A

Combatting metal theft risks

We use the term precious metal to describe gold, silver and platinum, plus a few rarities. Other than that, many think of metal as heavy and cheap. But, in fact, a tonne of scrap copper can get you between £6,000 to £7,000.Metal theft is a real issue, and it’s one that’s getting worse, after a previous period of marked improvement.

Prevention measures that installers can suggest in addition to installing CCTV and alarms systems include actions as simple as moving metal out of sight wherever possible to spraying metals with a forensic traceable liquid and signposting the fact that this is present.

The Scrap Metal Dealers Act In 2013, the government passed the Scrap Metal Dealers Act. The act established a licensing system for anyone dealing in scrap metal or motor salvage. Buyers would have to ask for photo ID, and cash transactions were banned. At first, the new system worked extremely well.

Metal theft is reportedly on the rise again so why and how should you advise your customers about security measures and prevention?

Where are the UK’s metal theft hotspots? Roofing Megastore has used a Freedom of Information (FOI) request with UK police forces to discover the cities and towns in the UK which have the most reported building materials such as copper and lead stolen over the past five years. Sheffield and Preston are the cities with the most building material thefts, each with 482 reported crimes since 2017. Nine out of the top ten cities with the most reported thefts are based in the north of the country, with towns and cities including Burnley, Doncaster, and Barnsley all ranking in the top ten. Ten cities that fall under Lancashire Constabulary ranked in the top 25 list, while three cities from the Humberside area also placed in the top 25. Cities and towns governed by the South Yorkshire Police only appeared four times in the top 25 list, however the four towns that were included (Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster and Sheffield), each reported over 245 total crimes, placing them in the topAmongstten.

the northern destinations which ranked in the top 25 cities, were three towns from Kent (Canterbury, Ashford and Margate), and towns in the middle and south of England, including Norwich, Worksop South and Dudley. One Welsh town made the top 25 list, with Llanelli reporting 105 building material thefts since 2017.

The number of metal thefts recorded by police in England and Wales fell from 62,000 to 13,000 in just four years. But, those numbers are now on the rise again. Figures remain lower than the peak – recorded by Statista as 2012/13 – though there are concerns that organised gangs are stealing more now in each case, meaning that simple incident counts may not tell the whole story. There are two key reasons why things are getting worse. The World Bank’s Metals and Minerals Price Index went up by half in 2021 (though it seems to be stabilising now). And, here’s what the CEO of the British Metals Recycling Association said when asked to name the biggest challenge his industry faced: “The lack of enforcement of the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013. Put simply neither the police nor local authorities have the funding to tackle cash-paying operatives. The illegal operators know this and now openly flout the law and even advertise that they will pay cash for scrap metal.”

The association is calling for the reinstatement of the Metal Theft Taskforce – the body whose assessment led to the 2013 law. Anything made of metal has a scrap value, but the favoured materials for thieves are copper, lead, aluminium, brass, and bronze. Copper is at most risk. Lower value metals like steel will be targeted if they are easy to take – there are numerous thefts of covers from drains and manholes, for example. Vacant properties – commercial and domestic –are at the most risk, but there are also opportunistic thefts from busy places, generally during unoccupied hours. Sheds and other outbuildings are common targets.

Expanding the role of CCTV

Requiring an upgrade

42 www.psimagazine.co.uk

A CCTV upgrade was needed to replace a failing, pre-existing system , to ensure that staff had a reliable real-time view of all perimeters and enclosures VIDEO

Asuite of IDIS software and hardware has been installed at Bristol Zoological Society’s new landmark visitor attraction, the Wild Place Project. The video system’s role is to ensure the safety of staff and visitors, to watch over the zoo’s animal population, including its bears and wolverines, and to help manage the ancient woodland setting.

When we think about video surveillance it’s usually in the context of protecting people and property, however a new project, delivered by KIS Fire & Security using IDIS end-to-end video technology, demonstrates that CCTV has a role in protecting nature and contributing to education and science

Bristol Zoological Society is one of the world’s oldest conservation and education charities, one with an international reputation for its work protecting wildlife around the world. In addition to projects focused on critically endangered species, and working with local communities, the society encourages sustainable behaviours through its education programmes. The zoo’s newest visitor attraction, the 136acre Wild Place Project just off junction 17 of the M5, will become its permanent home when it moves from its historic city centre location in 2024. The aim is to establish a zoo for the 21st century with conservation and sustainability at its heart. The first phase has already begun, with a number of important species being settled into their new homes, and the first visitors enjoying views of the enclosures from raised walkways. Video surveillance is playing a vital role, allowing the new site to be managed efficiently and safely. However a CCTV upgrade was needed to replace a failing, pre-existing system , to ensure that staff had a reliable real-time view of all perimeters and enclosures. In particular they need to be able to check that the integrity of fences is not compromised, for example by storm damage.Affordability was a key consideration, specifically how to achieve 24/7 coverage of the park’s extensive areas while maintaining low OPEX costs for cameras, infrastructure, data transmission, and maintenance.

KIS Fire and Security was awarded the contract to design and install a new solution using IDIS technology. But the project would not be straightforward, not only because of the woodland settings, but because species including European brown bears, wolves, cheetahs, zebras, and wolverines were already living at the site. The implementation needed to be undertaken with close attention to health and safety: during the 8-week project, the KIS engineers had to work in pairs, using walkie-talkies to keep in close contact with zoo’s welfare team. To minimise disturbance to the animals the engineers had to keep noise down. And for work

Adam Evans, Head of IT at Bristol Zoological Society commented: “Our IDIS video solution, delivered by KIS Fire & Security, gives us the best long-term value with the flexibility to scale and adapt as the park develops. Looking ahead, IDIS also makes it easy for us to take advantage of AIpowered analytics and integrate with wider systems.”Adamalso indicated that once the attraction expands, the Society plans to integrate the system with Microsoft Active Directory to make it easy to manage access rights centrally and securely. He highlighted the low total cost of ownership (TCO) delivered by the IDIS solution, thanks to its lower bandwidth requirements, reduced maintenance burden and transparent VMS pricing structures. The end-to-end IDIS video solution now gives the zoo’s operational team and managers domainwide awareness of enclosures and perimeters, with an intuitive interface that makes it easy for them to handle multi-task surveillance operations without specialist training. As well as ensuring that fences are intact, the system will allow continuous monitoring of animals, for example allowing them to be watched over but not disturbed during periods of hibernation.Thiswillhelp to enhance the security and welfare of staff, visitors, and animals, both now and long into the future.

KIS set up Lightmasterthecameras to deliver a clear view of fences and outdoor habitats; and they installed 5MP IR vandal and weather resistant domes to cover the bear handlingsusceptiblecamerasPreviouslyenclosures.installedhadprovedtoroughbythebears on the bear enclosure, time was short: the installation needed to be completed within two weeks, in time for the bears to begin their hibernation. A solution for all seasons KIS Fire and Security selected IDIS’s DCS6283HRXL 2MP 36x Lightmaster PTZs because, while operating at low bandwidth and minimising storage requirements, they deliver live view and image capture in full HD resolution. With IR cut filter and auto switch, they capture clear footage in full darkness up to distances of 350m. Their 120dB true WDR dynamic range, backlight compensation, and advanced image control settings including self-adjusting video mode sharpness, means they cope with rapid changes in light in the woodland setting. KIS set up the Lightmaster cameras to deliver a clear view of fences and outdoor habitats; and they installed 5MP IR vandal and weather resistant domes to cover the bear enclosures. Previously installed cameras had proved susceptible to rough handling by the bears. Plug-and-play connection ensured problemfree installation, which reduced installation time and was particularly important with hard-to-reach cameras covering the site’s raised Bear Wood walkway.TheKIS team also installed full supporting infrastructure including fibre-links, cat-6 cable, and a data cabinet. Video is streamed back to the site’s meeting room and an IDIS 32-channel NVR ensures 30-day storage. With Bristol Zoo beginning the next phase of its two-year relocation and development journey from late 2022 to 2024, the cost-free IDIS Center software provides an easy to use operating with the ability to seamlessly scale up to IDIS Solution Suite as the site expands. The solution also helps the zoo to future-proof its security. The ability to integrate with an unlimited number of devices, including third party cameras, reduces costs and makes future expansion simpler.

Expert advice When exploring HVM solutions, a useful starting point is the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI), a Government-backed resource for physical and personnel protective security. The website includes an interactive online list of vehicle security barriers that meet all regulations and standards, including crash test certification.

Also, the Perimeter Security Suppliers Association (PSSA) – of which BFT is a member – has a dedicated hub of information purely on HVM. A site assessment to look at how the HVM solution would work in practice is, of course, advisable and working with a manufacturer that offers more than just a manual gives access to advice and support when making recommendations and when approaching an installation. There are numerous HVM solutions which range from automatic bollards and HVM street furniture to static columns and temporary barriers.Iframmed by a truck travelling at speed, conventional barriers may slow the vehicle, but could still be displaced beyond the point of impact and may still strike at anyone in the immediate vicinity. The simplest and most versatile solution is to install anti-terrorism bollards, either fixed or retractable, which offer protection without impeding on the movement of pedestrians and cyclists. Retractable bollards offer flexibility to accommodate temporary changes in traffic flow, allowing access for emergency and operational vehicles. For example, BFT’s X-Pass range of automatic bollards is an ideal choice for settings where there’s a need for flexibility to accommodate temporary changes in traffic flow or events. Each bollard has its own selfcontained hydraulic pump unit, allowing it to be raised or lowered with just one command.

Under the Government’s Protect Duty Bill, venues regularly used by the public such as arenas, tourist attractions and shopping centres (with a capacity of 100 persons or more) will be legally required to consider the risk of terror attacks as part of their security strategies. Otherwise known as ‘Martyn’s Law’, the introduction of the Bill follows the campaign launched by the mother of Martyn Hett, who was among those who tragically lost their lives in the Manchester Arena bombing in 2017. The Bill took a step closer to becoming legislation when it was included in the latest Queen’s Speech. While this will require a thorough overview of a venue’s security operations, as hostile vehicles have become increasingly relied on by those seeking to launch an attack, it will be important to consider Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) as part of a protective security strategy. Finding the right solution

Cameras on AI platform boost retail operations for NHL team Azena has revealed that NHL franchise, the Pittsburgh Penguins, is testing Azena’s platform for smart cameras to explore ways to improve operational efficiencies throughout the team’s home venue, PPG Paints Arena. The Penguins hope to streamline wait times at busy concession stands on game days in real time and leverage enhanced retail analytics in its fan stores to increase arena retail sales. Azena’s operating platform for smart cameras integrates with existing video surveillance systems and provides ready-to-use Artificial Intelligence-enhanced video analytics applications designed to run simultaneously directly on the camera and can be easily changed based on needs, much like on a smartphone.

“The Pittsburgh Penguins are very excited to see the benefits of the Azena analytics in action,” said Erik Watts, Chief Technology Officer for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Using Azena queue detection applications on smart cameras from Azena partner Vivotek, the cameras can be used to detect lines at food and beverage stands as they form and notify employees to promptly increase staffing at busy checkouts, minimising congestion and increasing sales. The Penguins can use the data gathered by the queue analytics application to help streamline their already installed touchless ordering system for mobile phones, which estimates wait time, directs fans to the kiosk where their order is ready, and integrates with POS systems to remove the order from the queue. These analytics have the power to improve the game day experience in real time, but also over time, as the data can identify trends in overall traffic on specific days, or times of day, enabling management to optimise staffing through actionable insights. “Smart cameras, such as those running on the Azena platform, are making arenas and event venue experiences more enjoyable and secure for both fans and staff,” said Andrew Seymour, Business Development Manager at Azena. “The analytics offered by apps available on the Azena platform have the potential to transform the game dayTheexperience.”cameraswill be used to analyse the popularity of certain displays using heat mapping and enable staff to optimise merchandise placement within the store. This technology also helps arena retail operations make more informed decisions on staffing and inventory as the analytics identify patterns in customer store traffic and purchasing behaviour.

Texecom’s primary alarm communication service, Texecom Monitor, aims to achieve that goal

Following successful testing in selected sites the UK-wide rollout of Openreach’s programme to migrate all of the phone lines and channels to All-IP is now in full swing with a deadline of completing the switchover by December 2025. This move will affect not only voice calls but also lines of communication such as the link between alarm systems and the Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). In most cases, in order for the panel to continue to be connected after switchover an installer will need to fit a device to the unit which, given the number of jobs this represents and the cost of fuel at the moment, is not going to be a simple and cost effective procedure. However there is another option.

Texecom Monitor provides a digital solution to the impending issue meaning that Texecom Premier Elite systems with SmartCom communicators can switch seamlessly and easily. What is Monitor?
