Guessing games This month we take the opportunity to look ahead to 2022 and try to predict, at what is possibly the most unpredictable of times in history, what the next twelve months has in store for the security sector

’m not a betting man. I did once get a feeling in my water that Liverpool FC would do the treble and I put a fiver on it at 69.5-1 only for it to come off, trousering me around £350 and paying for that year’s holiday. Despite that correct prediction landing me a nice wad it didn’t lead me to the opinion that I was some kind of seer, so when it comes to making annual predictions on the direction of the security sector each year I prefer to defer to the real experts. Which is why this month we see the return of the PSI Panel and a collection of industry gurus being interviewed giving us their thoughts on the twelve months ahead and the technologies that may shape the direction of innovation in 2022. I don’t envy the experts on this one. These are tricky times to be making guesses on what the next year could hold. We saw events in 2020 that no-one on the entire planet predicted at the end of 2019. National lockdowns and social distancing led to the demise of many businesses, meanwhile working from home and the word ‘furlough’ became commonplace. In fact there are still plenty of people working remotely and lots of workers preferring to ‘Zoom’ rather than drive. An additional factor is that recent events have also proven to be divisive amongst populations with sides being taken across a number of subjects from climate change to self-identity. Throw into that mix the impact of chip shortages and the continuation of the pandemic and there are plenty of things to consider for making bold statements on the future and who to blame for where we are; there are some who blame everything, even empty shelves in US stores on Brexit, for example. Fortunately, as I’ve said before, we work in a sector that provides a common requirement of human life. People will always need security and new technology never stops being innovated and developed. The recent sights of trade shows and regional events suggests that the sector may be slowly returning to prepandemic times, but which technologies will survive and subsequently thrive after all we’ve been through to go on and make it big in the shows of 2022? Can trends be confidently surmised? Next year could well prove to be the year of noncontact access, AI, cloud, business acquisitions and shortages, to name but a few possible outcomes. Check out the Panel feature to find out what the experts say. I always like compiling the year-end edition of PSI as we carry so many interviews and opinions on how our market could evolve. I hope you enjoy reading all of the predictions and pick up some tips on which innovations could lead the way. Andy Clutton EDITOR

THE BOTTOM LINE I N A S S O C I AT I O N W I T H C S L

The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to Sian Doherty, Managing Director of Arc Monitoring. Established in 1999, Arc Monitoring is an NSI Gold Approved CCTV Monitoring & Alarm Receiving Centre, working with Asset Managers, FM Companies, and supporting professional Installers.

Paxton employees volunteer for mentoring programme with Brighton School Paxton has partnered with the LoveLocalJobs Foundation and Patcham High School, to provide student mentors for their Dare to Dream programme. Paxton’s volunteers are working with the Brighton school, helping to inspire a cohort of year 9 students. The volunteers will then individually mentor 15 students who will benefit the most from the support at the school. Nicola O’Donnell, HR Director at Paxton, explains: “We are delighted to finally be working more closely with LoveLocalJobs, and their Dare to Dream programme. This allows us to work with other Brighton businesses in schools to support and encourage younger generations to achieve their future goals and desires.” The Dare to Dream programme aims to challenge and inspire young people to develop the ways in which they think and give them the confidence they need to reach their full potential. The initiative was created by the LoveLocalJobs Foundation. Alongside inspirational talks, the students will take part in a series of interactive workshops prior to a working visit at Paxton’s HQ in Brighton. The syllabus is delivered around the core themes of self-awareness, mindset, gratitude, resilience, teamwork, and employability. The mentors who deliver this guidance use their own life experiences and professional knowledge to drive and motivate the students. Christina Fishlock, Head of Community Programmes for the Foundation says: “We can’t run programmes like this without support from organisations like Paxton. What they bring is a growing and innovative business, with a commitment to support their local community. As a tool to inspire young people, you can’t ask for a better partner.”

• Bft Automation has joined the Perimeter Security Suppliers Association (PSSA), as it continues to build its presence in the hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM) sector. The PSSA is the trade association for companies that supply and install products designed to provide physical protection and intruder detection.

Can you tell us a little about your journey within the business? I joined Arc in 2010, after 3 years at the University in Bristol and no clue what was next. My first job title was ‘Administrator and CCTV Operator’. I worked 12 hour shifts, 4 days on 4 days off, including overnight sometimes! I told myself I could continue the student lifestyle in those 4 days off – instead I found myself researching Alarm Panels and NVRs. Before I knew it, under Jonathan Sturely’s (previous Managing Director and Founder) guidance and mentorship, I was running the Control Room. I have loved seeing Arc grow year-on-year and knowing that I have been a part of that success. After 11 years with Arc, I was honoured to accept the role of Managing Director. I am so grateful to be in this position at a time when the Security Industry is undergoing an exciting transformation. How has the Security Industry kept your interest? One of my friends has my number saved under “Security Sian – I never rest”. Why? Because I almost missed a train to a Hen Party, after witnessing a shoplifter in Paddington Station. I just couldn’t walk away. This industry is one that allows you to provide a service to your customers that offers them protection in a way that no other commercial industry can. It becomes your vocation, not just your career. I’ve also been acutely aware that when I started in this industry, I was in the minority. There are more women now but few higher up the ladder. I was very lucky to have the support of a great leader and I now think it’s my responsibility to play my part and ensure this industry becomes more diverse and inclusive for the future generations. What are the latest challenges facing Alarm Receiving Centres? I sincerely believe that every challenge has its own set of opportunities. The technology available currently is impressive; ECHO, AI, Facial Recognition, etc. However that is just the start, it’s going to be revolutionary over the next few years. I think the traditional ‘alarm’ market will start to embrace visual verification which means ARCs need to keep up with that technology and continue to provide and enhance upon those services that a ‘self-monitored’ solution just can’t compete with. ARCs also need to be aware that enhancements to technology comes under the backdrop of heightened global and national security risks, as well as increased awareness of violence against women and the threat of severe cyber-attacks. However I think the biggest challenge facing any ARC is remembering that for every technological enhancement, human beings are running through it. At Arc we understand that our team are our biggest asset and like many businesses in the post-pandemic world, we need to look after those staff who do so much for us and for our customers. How are Arc Monitoring working with Installers to overcome the challenges of All IP? We began shouting about All IP around 2 years ago – posting about it on social media and talking to our existing customers and we have no plans to stop making noise! There is a misconception out there that we can all wait till 2025 – we really can’t! We have been working with CSL to provide customers with overviews of their portfolios and helping put in place plans for a steady transition. Our Customer Services Team truly understand the situation and speak to our customers daily about their plans for the future. We are offering free consultations with installers to review and consider their next steps.

YOU SAID IT! "We at Protego Fire and Security only ever install CSL products. They are without doubt the easiest to install and most efficient communicators on the market with a tech support that is first class." Jason Fosdike (Protego Fire & Security Limited) – Google Review – 6 September

EDITOR’S CHOICE The security industry is busy and complex, so it’s easy to miss new products and services as they get lost in day-to-day activities. Every now and again, certain products grab our attention so here we take a look at a few of the products we think you won’t want to miss this month.

Control surveillance operations from any location

The newly released IDIS Cloud Manager gives users enhanced control of their surveillance operations from any location, using their chosen web browser on mobile devices, laptops, and desktops for secure cloud access. IDIS Cloud Manager comes with an intuitive interface that reportedly makes configuration and network changes hassle-free, enabling more responsive, efficient and flexible operations. Once the system is in the IDIS Cloud Manager, users can remotely set-up recorders and cameras and check the status of network access for sites and devices. Authorised operators can then securely access the system to view live, playback, receive alarms and push notifications, quickly screen print or backup, and export video clips. idisglobal.com

he 3xLogic VX-VT-56 is an IP66 bullet style external thermal camera with a 56° horizontal field of view. It has motion detection including video content analysis and temperature alarm capabilities built in. It is capable of detecting scene intrusion and creating alarms regardless of light levels and weather conditions. A variety of specialist analytics is included.

Getting started The camera is PoE powered with an optional 12v DC input. The flying lead breaks out into an RJ45 network connector, a power jack, a BNC analogue test output connector and a 7-core cable for Audio In & Out, Alarm input and Alarm output plus associated ground connections. The integral mount can be used for most orientations and has three fixing holes with the lead fed out through the centre of the base. An analogue video output is available from the BNC connector on the flying lead, but this is for test purposes only as it does not show the full screen image and removes the OSD text. The camera uses DHCP by default but does not appear to have any discovery software readily available, though this will likely be accessible through the 3xLogic website or technical support. The camera can be accessed with all major browsers but appears to be optimised for Chrome. At first connection the camera requires a new administrator password to be entered and enforces a strong combination of characters (more than 8 and at least 3 types). Once entered you must then log in using this new password and the camera’s web page is then displayed. This is a

manually entered alternative. Up to 16 privacy masking zones can be used and these appear as black rectangles. Motion detection can be allocated to the whole screen area or up to 4 motion zones can be set. A video noise reduction option is given that blurs the low-resolution pixels and smooths the edges which reduces image detail but does reduce bandwidth requirements. By default, the image has hot items showing as increasing levels of white, alternatively these can be towards black or one of a range of 7 falsecolour settings although there was not a lot of variation in these. An internal 128GB SD card is available in model numbers with the suffix “S128”. This can be used for alarm recordings and during communication loss (assuming PoE or 12v supply is maintained). These recordings can be set to auto-delete after 1, 7, 15 days or 1 month or never, overwrite is not set by default so if not enabled, such recordings would need to be managed. VCA “Rules” include; Presence Polygon, Presence Line, Enter, Exit, Appear, Disappear, Stopped, Dwell, Direction, Removed, Abandoned, Tailgating, and Counting Line.

and a quality setting of 1 to 10 allows some variation in image detail. The motion detection has a range of settings to provide basic motion sensing or with VCA to provide more specific functionality. The device can be set to alarm if the temperature in the scene exceeds or drops below a defined threshold value. Alternatively, the rate of temperature change increasing or decreasing within a time period can be used to trigger an alarm. An on-screen display of Max, Avg, and Min temperatures can be turned on and provides a screen overlay of temperatures within the field of view. This display in the top left corner could not be re-positioned. Any privacy masks set will not impact the temperature sensing that is active for the whole scene. Alarm handling will be dependant on the VMS used but a local relay output is also possible.

Performance The Main stream, channel 1, has options for 640 x 480 or 320 x 240 and can be encoded as H.264, H.265 or MJPEG. Channel 2 is just 320 x 240 with the same encoding options. Channel 3 is 320 x 240 at MJPEG only. The camera has an uncooled Sun-Safe thermal sensor with 320 x 240 pixels so there is no image improvement noticeable at the higher resolution value. With the stream set to the default level the on-screen display including Time & Date is quite unclear. This can be improved by increasing the stream resolution to 640 x 480 and while this does not change the thermal image the text becomes much clearer. However, this could be seen to increase the storage requirement and bandwidth by around 33%. Maximum frame rate for all channels is 9 fps

The device can be set to alarm if the temperature in the scene exceeds or drops below a defined threshold value. Alternatively, the rate of temperature change increasing or decreasing within a time period can also be used to trigger an alarm 18

Detection range

The specification sheet gives figures for Detection, Recognition and Identification of a Human subject as 76.2, 45.7 and 15.2 metres respectively. Detection and Observation would perhaps be more appropriate figures as Recognition and Identification of an individual would not be possible using a thermal image. A human target at 15 metres from the camera resulted in a screen height of approximately 20%.

Conclusion A very compact thermal bullet camera that is straightforward to install and set up.

training to ensure compliant and correct use of the testing device.

Cons: • Manufacturer training required • No extension poles included

Testifire – 1000-001 smoke & heat test kit Performance The digital keypad and display makes testing easy with an easy to navigate menu that allows you to select the testing method, including a “Clear” option that uses an extraction fan to remove any smoke from the head, ensuring a quick reset of the detector and reducing the chance of a re-alarm. This detector uses pressurised smoke capsules rather than conventional aerosol that can contaminate detectors, reduce sensitivity, and reduce the detector life span.

Conclusion The tester allows you to easy and successfully test multiple different detection types including; Optical Smoke, Low and High Heat, and Multi-detectors without having to change your apparatus (the 2000 range also allows you to test CO type detectors). The product is very well built yet light enough to be transportable. The tester head includes a digital display that provides easy navigation to the testing menus, the buttons on this display are very prominent and well positioned to allow for easy use. The weak point in this product is the access flap that covers the smoke capsule as it is made from light plastic on a thin hinge which could easily be broken or become loose over time. However, the capsules used click into place so the risk of the module falling out during use is unlikely. This product is suitable for all testing applications for systems comprising of smoke, heat and multi-detectors. The tester is light and portable and is also compatible with the existing no climb solo poles, so this could be a great addition or upgrade to your existing testing devices.

7.5 out of 10 PSI Product Tests are carried out by an independent third party, not editorial staff. The manufacturer/supplier has no input in the review or the final result

The information provided details all required product codes and instructions for setting up the lock and connecting it to the app. Instructions are initially a little confusing as Master Lock has two applications both called Vault, one is Vault Home and the other is Vault Enterprise but the instructions do not stipulate that this lock will not learn to the Home app. Once the correct application was downloaded and an account was made with Master Lock Vault Enterprise, the set up was relatively easy. The lock is easily found on the application and the instructions provide a QR code to scan plus

Pros: • Well constructed • Responsive • Good application and management system • Reduction in the need for keys and key management systems • Easy to operate • Geolocation feature

22

Cons: • Expensive • Instructions should be clearer in areas – especially around the particular application requirements • Wouldn’t recommend for simple applications

Master Lock - 6400LJENT Bluetooth Padlock product and unique device number (that is also printed onto the lock itself which is a nice touch).

Performance The lock does everything you need from a conventional lock with the added touch of app connectivity and remote unlocking within the Bluetooth range. The lock was continually tested and it showed to operate up to 18m away from the lock in line of sight – this range will be reduce if there are partitions or barriers in the way. When unlocking using the onboard keypad, the lock responds instantly releasing a satisfying and noticeable “Click” to indicate the lock is open. When using the app, particularly in close range, the lock works with little to no delay but this slightly increases at longer range, up to 18m.

Conclusion The build quality of the lock is really good. The lock is very robust with a strong steel shackle that will take a high level of abuse. The digital push buttons are very well displayed and did not stick or present any problems during testing. The casing of the lock is constructed of a relatively strong plastic but it was malleable in areas, particularly around the battery area which may pose problems over time especially if the battery holder is likely to shift or move out of alignment. This product is flexible and suitable for any application where a lock or locking system is required. The benefits of this lock is reduction in key management and remote control of users rights and access to locks, increasing overall security. This being said, this product would be better suited for large scale application or where it is fitted in a remote location – and due to the price, the cost of the lock may price it above basic applications.

The dark art of night security With the nights becoming longer, now is a good time to reassess video surveillance to ensure it continues to secure areas 24/7 ight time surveillance poses some interesting challenges, like keeping video quality clear in no and low light levels. But it’s critical to get it right, as the majority of crime and anti-social behaviour occurs under the cover of darkness. We recently sat down with Uri Guterman, Head of Product & Marketing for Hanwha Techwin Europe, to discuss solutions:

N

What proportion of video surveillance systems currently in place do you think are unsuitable for providing good security on dark nights? Night time surveillance has always been a tricky and costly exercise to get right. Over long distances, it’s difficult to find cost-effective illumination to maintain the optimum video quality. If there is too much illumination, there can be flare back issues. However, not enough illumination, and your images will be dull and ‘noisy’. Supplementary lighting can quickly ramp up the costs of an installation when you consider the additional time needed to install and the various cabling and accessories required. For many years, installers have had to spend a lot of time seeking out solutions that cover the distance needed, for the right budget, while considering other restrictions like avoiding light pollution in residential areas or using infrared (IR) along rail tracks. Overall, the experience with traditional video surveillance for nights is complicated and could be much improved. Are there specific types of cameras that suit night surveillance or is it all about placement? Luckily, there’s light on the horizon, because cameras with onboard IR are becoming more advanced, which is simplifying installations for nighttime surveillance. For example, Hanwha Techwin’s Wise IR feature provides adaptive IR at every zoom ratio and lighting condition. IR illumination is dynamically adjusted to where you’re zooming in, so a camera’s placement is not quite so crucial. It also cuts down on the amount of supplementary lighting needed. This

www.psimagazine.co.uk

IR illumination can be concentrated on objects up to 500 metres away. Likewise, new technology is emerging that can clarify captured images by reducing the noise that occurs at low light levels. Reducing noise also helps with optimising transmission and storage efficiency. Low light image processing technology, like Hanwha Techwin’s SSNR (Smart Super Noise Reduction), reduces noise and motion blur by maintaining the brightness, colour reproducibility and sharpness in extreme low light environments. Again, this reduces the need for a lot of costly supplementary lighting and takes the pressure off installers to find the best camera placement for nighttime surveillance. Combined with adaptive IR, cameras are beginning to do a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to operating in low light environments. Finally, it’s worth considering the physical design of the camera itself. Some cameras are better suited to operate in low light conditions because their lenses have been designed to capture more light and deliver more of it to the sensor.

“Some cameras are better suited to operate in low light conditions because their lenses have been designed to capture more light and deliver more of it to the sensor”

Do modern cameras need additional illumination in dark areas or is on board IR enough? Every installation is different, so the choice between additional illumination or onboard IR really depends on a number of factors. Firstly, the conditions where the camera is expected to operate. In built-up areas, light will bounce off many objects but this doesn’t happen in large,

29

CCTV

(continued from page 15)

empty spaces. You also need to consider light pollution in residential areas. Onboard IR is suitable for distances up to approximately 200 metres, however it cannot be used in some environments where a red light could distract or cause danger (like on railways where a train driver might emergency brake if they suddenly see a red light). The second consideration is budget. It would be overkill to fit an advanced camera with onboard IR and noise reduction technology to do a basic surveillance task, like covering a building’s entrance. A traditional setup with illumination and a camera would prove just as effective in such a case. Can analytics functions be affected by a lack of light? Video analytics relies on the clarity of footage, otherwise, things like object detection won’t be as accurate with a lot of image noise. Without a high-quality image, you cannot rely on analytics working as well as it should. That said, analytics is advancing thanks to deep learning and algorithms can be trained on nighttime and IR footage to improve accuracy. It’s still early days for this kind of technology so it’ll be exciting to see how video analytics develops over the coming years to address the challenges of nighttime surveillance.

Cameras like the Wisenet XNB9002 feature SSNR to reduce noise and motion blur with a long IR viewable length due to WiseIR

30

When it comes to return on investment for night surveillance do you have any advice? Do the more “cost efficient” systems offer a good alternative? Ultimately it comes down to your goals and budget. You can install the best multidirectional and panoramic cameras with onboard IR and noise reduction technology, but it will only pay off if this installation is aligned

with what the security team wants to achieve. A simple installation to cover a single entrance won’t need an advanced solution. However, protecting a port or energy grid will necessitate a more intelligent solution.

“For those looking for more modern solutions, there are a host of cameras available that come with onboard IR to ensure effective night time image capture” For those looking for more modern solutions, there are a host of cameras available that come with onboard IR to ensure effective night time image capture and that can massively cut down on the total lifetime cost of an installation (along with implementation time, network switches and cabling, VMS licenses, and energy usage). Which other technologies do you think give best results when combined with cameras for a full, integrated security system? I would be remiss if I first didn’t mention the role of the VMS (video management system) in delivering a full, integrated security experience. Investing in the right VMS is critical if you wish to record, analyse, and store video footage, carry out advanced video analytics, and integrate with other devices like sensors or access control. Beyond this, thermal cameras will prove useful in nighttime surveillance as they can monitor wide and long distances. They will help security teams detect possible intrusion, in combination with video analytics that can alert operators to unusual movements across a site. They can also monitor a facility’s temperatures for any changes that could indicate a fire. However, they will need to be combined with other cameras as they are not suitable for recognition or identification purposes. The growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in cameras cannot be overlooked. Your IR and thermal cameras give you ways to see what’s happening on the ground but AI is the brain that processes it. AI monitors all incoming footage based on predefined rules to issue alerts for any events that need an operator’s attention. This helps operators work more efficiently, across large installations, with greater oversight and accuracy — and drastically reduces false alarms.

INTERVIEW

The drive to cloud storage We are generating more video surveillance data than ever before and the value of that information has never been higher. We talk to Jermaine Campbell of Seagate Technology about how the way we store data is changing and why installers have a role in the development of solutions ccording to the 2020 Seagate report entitled ‘Rethink Data’, data growth has been and will continue to be unprecedented in volume. The survey predicted that in just two years, from the beginning of 2020 through the beginning of 2022, enterprises would see a 42.2% annual increase in the volume of generated data. We are now at the end point of this period so we are living in a time of record-breaking requirements for storage space. The survey data indicated that three factors are the most important catalysts for the growth of stored data: increasing use of analytics, the proliferation of IoT devices and cloud migration initiatives. Survey respondents indicated that approximately 30% of stored data is found in internal data centres, 20% in third-party data centres, 19% in edge data centres or remote locations, 22% in cloud repositories, and 9% in other locations. The report predicts that storage environments will remain dispersed and complex for the foreseeable future. So how will a market such as video surveillance, which is generating more content than ever and using it for more purposes than it was originally collected, change, in regard to onsite and cloud storage? To find out, we spoke to Jermaine Campbell, Surveillance Segment Lead EMEA at Seagate to discuss how the video surveillance storage climate is evolving.

A

service (VSaaS) and creating cloud offerings for surveillance. We've achieved this by creating mass storage drives (EXOS) that are suitable for cloud storage and created our own systems that can be used for people hosting private or public cloud, so, we are building entire solutions as well as single hard drive devices. Most recently we have brought our Lyve offerings, Lyve Cloud and Lyve Mobile to the market. These are S3 compatible, storage solutions for video surveillance. So, the development of the cloud has been an opportunity for us in terms of being able to leverage our own mass storage portfolio to meet the demands of those using the cloud. What are hybrid systems and what are the benefits for installers and their customers? A hybrid system enables you to store your data locally via NVR and also store data off-premises via cloud-based storage. So why would somebody want to do that? We're seeing that the amount of data that people need to record, hold onto and analyse is growing and up until now you would need to rejuvenate your local hardware and storage space to cope with the increase in data being stored. With hybrid, you have an option where you can record and keep the data that you need on-site for easy access to write or to read urgent ‘hot’ data. “The development of the cloud has been an opportunity for us in terms of being able to leverage our own mass storage portfolio to meet the demands of those using the cloud”

As a company known for HDDs, how has the development of cloud storage affected your business? We have seen growth in the use of cloud storage in the video surveillance sector, but as a company known for its Skyhawk HDDs installed into local NVRs, I think it is important to understand that we don't see one technology competing against the other. For Seagate this development of the cloud is not creating a competition between cloud-based storage and local, on premise storage. The growth of cloud storage has actually created an opportunity for Seagate, our customers and our partners as we have been instrumental in growing video-as-a-

search with analytics etc, you can send that information off into the cloud. You can choose to do that with third-party cloud offerings or, as Seagate, we offer our own cloud storage solutions (Lyve Cloud) which are coming to Europe next calendar year. With this approach you just pay for how many terabytes that you send to the cloud per month. How much more complex is it to set something like that up, rather than just putting a hard drive in a DVR? It's a great question and in my view, I don't think any technology really takes off until it becomes user-friendly. We know that people expect to be able to press a button and see the recording process begin. We understand that VSaaS needs to be simple and we've created a system which makes it very, very simple to use. You create a cloud account and choose your target to decide what you are saving locally and what you are saving into the cloud and how often this is to happen. It's already a simple procedure but I'm sure it will become even simpler in time. Essentially I think it's becoming a lot less complex for installers to be able to choose these kinds of hybrid or cloud-based storage options and the easier we can make that process the more it helps installers.

“I don't think any technology really takes off until it becomes userfriendly. We know that people expect to be able to press a button and see the recording process begin”

We're all consumers, we all use electronic technology so are the requirements of the end user what drives the direction of the business? The requirements of both the end user and the installer are what drive our technology and what we bring to market. To see how the requirements of VIA systems storage systems have changed, we need to look back at the evolution of CCTV. Once we were working at five frames per second with black and white video and no audio at, whereas today we are capturing video at 25 frames per second in full colour HD with audio. Now we're not just recording footage when there is movement in a zone, cameras are recording 24/7 because there

is data being generated that can be used at a later stage - and not just for security purposes. What has definitely changed is that the data being captured is more valuable than ever before. In the past, that data was only valuable if an incident occurred, but that has changed now because we can do so much more with that information in terms of business insights; we are starting to see a proliferation of different applications like smart city, smart hospitals, smart factories etc, so businesses want to record more data and keep it for longer for analytics. Are the security concerns around cloud storage still there or have we moved on from that? I think there are still some concerns regarding saving data in the cloud, but if you look at what cloud storage is now, these concerns have been dealt with. There are technologies that make data more secure such as offering data immutability, so if you record something up into our Lyve Cloud S3 storage for example, only you can decide who can access it. To anybody else the data is scrambled and unreadable. As cloud systems become more prevalent, simpler, more cost effective and more secure, people's confidence will grow. And let's not forget, we have hybrid solutions too, so it's not a case of using one or the other. One day in the future will we see total cloud storage with no-one storing anything on-site? As mentioned earlier, what drives technology and solutions is meeting the requirements of the installer and the customer. With more and more data being created at the end point I find it unlikely that people will want all of that data to move instantly to the cloud even though constantly improving bandwidths could enable it. I think that given the storage options available, end-users and installers will choose what suits them and they'll likely store some data on the edge and they'll have some in the cloud. While data is being generated at the end point I think there will always be a need to store data immediately, but cloud will become more and more popular especially as it becomes more cost-effective and simpler. We also need to keep regulatory requirements in mind as well in regard to storing data for longer periods. And do people really want to be spending money on their own servers for storage purposes when there is a cheaper subscription-based alternative?

PANEL

What has 2022 got in store? The PSI Panel returns this month with a look ahead to the New Year and beyond. Here the experts give us their thoughts on the trends and times to come

T

he events of 2020 taught us that predicting the future is a tricky thing to do especially as we appear to be living in unprecendentedly unpredictable times. However, given what we know about the increasingly connected, AIdriven, mobile and cloud stored consumer tech market can this give us a guide as to the picture for the electronic security market in 2022? What will be the impact of the pandemic and will being an installer appeal to the tech savvy generation of students coming through? For the first time in a while, the PSI Panel is in session...

John Coleman – CSL

The biggest challenge that the fire and security industry will face in 2022 is the move from traditional phone lines (PSTN) to the new digital voice service (All IP). The first part of this challenge is the end date – December 2025. In many cases, people think this is how long they have to upgrade their systems when the reality is that this is happening now and the clock is ticking. There are over 450 exchanges that have either entered the ‘Stop Sell’ phase of PSTN services or have been declared as an upcoming area for 2022. ‘Stop Sell’ impacts not only new supply but also the ability to make any changes on that line – for example, you cannot move to a different provider without upgrading to an IP service. Once your exchange moves into ‘Stop Sell’ you can be moved to digital voice at any time. You could have restrictions on PSTN supply at the start of a month and be moved to the digital voice service within that same month. This is a massive concern for Installers, especially for single-path signalling devices that are reliant on PSTN. Once your digital voice service is enabled, your old phone line will stop working and if this happens in an area with legacy signalling

systems installed, will a security company have the time and resources to get around these sites to ensure they are upgraded? It is very unlikely. What we will see is the momentum on these migrations ramping up as the Communication Providers look to roll out these enhanced broadband features. With all the leading industry bodies stressing the importance of taking action now to avoid issues later, proper planning could see companies carrying out these upgrades in the calm of 2022 as opposed to the chaos of the years to come.

“The biggest challenge that the fire and security industry will face in 2022 is the move from traditional phone lines (PSTN) to the new digital voice service (All IP)”

David Scott – Skills for Security

Looking ahead I believe the sector will continue its growth over the next year and beyond. This growth will be further driven in the construction sector with changes to fire legislations affecting not only fire alarms and fire protection systems but also accompanying systems like intruder alarm systems, VSS and access control systems. Other predicted areas of growth and interest will be in new and advancing changes with CCTV and AI technology, which will see the sector move into new areas and be responsible for supplying more compliant systems as this sector becomes more regulated as governments clamp down on it’s use and controlling behaviour. “Without a doubt, as 2022 rolls out, we’re going to see more cloud-based surveillance systems being specified, where video storage and VMS control is hosted vs being physically located on-site”

The skills shortage we are all seeing just now will continue to worsen before it gets better, with a further skills shortage anticipated in all engineering sectors of 265K+. This will see salaries in full-time employees increase to new levels and a further need to depend on subcontractors for support and completion of projects. The sector is driving professionalism and competency. This will continue through changes in the ECS card scheme, developments around apprenticeships and the development of new accredited qualifications for the industry. We will see a huge up take in training across the whole sector as businesses fight to retain staff, be an employer of choice and upskill their work forces to be efficient and the best in the sector. The companies that develop and retain will be the ones that are able to grow. The sector will continue it’s trend with M&A and we will see many of the global organisations support there growth, staff retention problems through the acquisitions of smaller national providers to meet customer demand and growth targets.

Sara Fisher – 360 Vision Technology

As we gradually emerge out of lockdown and build the new normal, a return to travel and face-to-face meetings will underpin massive growth opportunities for UK companies. In addition, there will be many more project opportunities to be had. The opening-up of international travel too, will act as a catalyst for those willing to

take-up the post-Brexit batten, to promote British design and engineering solutions. Without a doubt, as 2022 rolls out, we’re going to see more cloud-based surveillance systems being specified, where video storage and VMS control is hosted vs being physically located on-site. And as technology inevitably advances, we’ll also see a greater uptake and move towards 4K camera imaging, made possible by ever more efficient algorithms that enable the transmission of higher data rates, coupled to low bandwidths. Looking to the future and in the aftermath of the recent COP26, end-user customers across every sector will be looking to source technologies and solutions from suppliers who proactively exhibit green credentials. The goal of reducing security systems’ carbon footprints via low power consumption products and less/re-cyclable packaging, will see conscientious manufacturers striving to build more and more green innovation into their offerings. After all, there’s only one planet Earth and the security industry, like every other sector, needs to actively contribute to reducing CO2 emissions wherever they can. Riding on the back of several headline business acquisitions in 2021, it wouldn’t be at all surprising to see more of the same in 2022, where sensible acquisitions take place that increase the depth of product offering and market share of companies in key market sectors. A word of warning and something to be considered, is that transport and delivery costs may continue to rise, impacting on product costs. This, coupled with supply chain and essential component shortages, will need to be carefully managed in order for companies to succeed and prosper…

Justin Hawkesford – Comelit-PAC

The pandemic has triggered a widespread transition into the digital sphere for everyone. In security, it has increased the reliance on remote technology and seen a shift in our approach to biometrics and how we control access to buildings. We are in a constantly evolving industry and in the year to come, we will see many changes, led by end user preferences, in our approach to 42

product development, installation and remote monitoring. Cloud based services (SaaS) are rapidly growing, helping businesses improve scalability, promote growth and facilitate agile choices. In a post-COVID world, cloud technology has become a necessity for more end users, bringing with it a necessity to place our trust in its capabilities. The security industry is rising to the challenge with new security tools and platforms. In 2022 and beyond, organisations will adopt new technologies to address a new wave of threats, both physical and cyber based, and secure the core of our evolving digital economy. At the same time, led by the need of consumers to have complete control over home and business security wherever they are, we are increasingly designing products and technology to fit today’s mobile-centric lifestyles. And as part of this development journey, if plans do not include mobile, they are not finished. This is especially true for the future of security, with homeowners increasing their use of apps to control their security and home automation needs, from door entry control, through intruder alarms, CCTV monitoring and the use of mobile based access control credentials. The video surveillance market is consistently growing due to rising concerns for security and safety. This will result in increased demand for more technically advanced surveillance systems, creating huge growth opportunities for video surveillance manufacturers, but also risking some manufacturers being excluded from the UK market due to security and privacy concerns. The focus on more intricate technologies that emerge within the physical security disciplines, that enable manufacturers to stay proactive in offering the latest mobile oriented security features or indeed the increased reliance on cloud-based services will see companies continuing to be acquired for their niche capabilities. But within this, there is increasing pressure on the industry to maintain and continue to learn new skills, which set against the wellknown shortage and lack of new generations entering our industry, is a continuing cause for concern.

Rudolf Rohr – barox Kommunication

From what we see from our sales team and direct customer feedback, the trend for the security industry will be to continue at a high pace, with double digit growth rates. Cyber security is becoming the core issue for the industry. Without a focus on proper cyber security strategy and hardened products, some manufacturers will not be sustained in the market. Interms of acquisitions, looking back, in the years 2007 and onwards it was mainly big companies like GE, Schneider and Cisco buying specialised CCTV manufacturers. Then in early 2010, it became more internal acquisitions between medium-sized players. Since 2017 big players came back into the game to purchase the likes of Motorola, Konica Minolta and Canon. For sure, acquisitions will definitely be taking place in the security industry in the future.

Jamie Allam – Amthal Fire & Security Whilst we may not have completed the transition to the new normal, or ‘post pandemic environment,’ employees and teams who had flirted with heading back to the office full time have found themselves creating flexible arrangements. This interim ‘new normal’ makes seemingly simple questions such as ‘how many people are in the building today,” more complex to answer. Security teams into 2022 can benefit from technical solutions for people counting like accurate touchless access control systems or easy to use advanced video analytics to help solve this issue. More remote services can be used to manage this shift and the introduction of new processes. Increased monitoring for both fire and security ensures security managers are aware of access across a building, essential to managing complex processes such as an evacuation, safety testing or even just the flow of people at any one time in a building. Here, the sector must continue to innovate into the new year with technologies and biometrics that enhance integration capabilities, both with the constant advances in IOT and developing building management systems. It may see a focus shift from the end product to the firmware used, and often the potential of the product. It doesn’t necessarily mean more complicated, but in 2022, we will see ‘packaged’ solutions aimed at simplifying security and enabling digital transformation.

As we look forward to 2022, growth via acquisition will continue, capable of pulling together research and development departments to understand the role of latest innovations changing how we see and use security technology.

Steve Norman – Ajax Systems

Due to advances in technology and the change in peoples mindsets over how and where they work, the industry will need to make huge changes over the next few years. Split working between home and office, the addition of many external spaces to the home, and the demands of the pandemic have changed the demands of customers, both commercial and domestic. Many spaces are now vacant, but still need securing from intrusion, flood and fire. Agile, flexible systems that can be adapted in an instant are going to be in demand. Hub and cloud-based systems controlled via mobile phone apps are going to drive innovation.

Steve Bumphrey – Traka UK

“Agile, flexible systems that can be adapted in an instant are going to be in demand. Hub and cloud-based systems controlled via mobile phone apps are going to drive innovation” 44

The pandemic has deeply influenced innovation by transforming everything from work culture to consumer behaviour, and we must continue to move from a brave new world, to a mindset of evolution for growth to meet the new expectations. Those that will succeed into 2022 will put the customer needs and their safety (cyber and physical) across different sectors, at the forefront of everything they do. Technology is key to laying the foundations for more efficient operations, to meet increasingly discerning consumer demands quickly and cost (and time) effectively. It’s in small ways that it can make a difference. For example in retail, instead of keeping customers waiting while members of staff hunt for a charged-up tablet device to look for stock levels or product information, an automated retail asset management solution means this essential knowledge is right at hand. With a growing focus on customer experience and personalisation, and with more connected devices and services, networks will also collect and store more customer data than

ever before. We will see more processes automated to enable service delivery and improved business efficiency for the benefit of customers. Here again, security technology will need to show it is prioritising consumer needs and protection, both physically and from a data perspective. Another sector that is currently succeeding is distribution and logistics. It is embracing the ideals of asset management to optimise performance, control and monitor all physical processes and reduce the likelihood of human error. This all enables maximum efficiency and quicker response times, as key elements in enabling greater and fluid movement despite the difficult and restrictive pandemic conditions. Moving forward, sectors that continue to streamline and digitise their planning processes will be able to generate better plans faster and be more responsive. This can be where 2022 will be an exciting year for progress in IoT. Digital transformation will continue as a new opportunity to provide clarity and solutions to issues in physical security. By leveraging connected technology to generate greater intelligence, it will also be able to do more with less, improving operating efficiency and reducing operating and capital expenses. The biggest challenge we believe, will be enabling sector organisations to meet the new consumer expectations quickly and efficiently, with clear guidance on the return on investment and price point.

Tim Northwood – Inner Range

In 2022 we’ll see continued growth in demand for systems that deliver more than just good security. The pandemic, and social distancing in particular, has prompted site managers to think hard about how people use buildings, where crowds and queues occur, and how they can track and trace users if need be. Traditional security measures to ‘keep people out’ are still important. But customers want more sophisticated help managing bona fide users who need to be ‘in’ as safely and securely as possible. They’re looking for more integrated solutions. For example, where users can present mobile credentials at entry turnstiles and

www.psimagazine.co.uk

EDIT panel dec21_PSI_mar15 29/11/2021 17:51 Page 6

integrated lifts read the same credentials and instantly direct users to the quickest lift for their ‘home’ floor – speeding them through reception with ease and reducing crowding. They want credentials to be touchless wherever possible. And for visitors to be processed more efficiently with digital credentials generated in advance, quickly activated at the correct date and time, and triggering the same swift, specified access through the building. What’s more, they want a system that can track a user who has become unwell, and trace other contacts who have been near them. Pandemic aside, we’re also finding more customers citing a good user experience as one of their most important priorities. For many, a slick, hassle-free experience for users is just as important as high security, and I expect this will also drive more sophisticated, integrated solutions. The bar has been raised in terms of expectation. Increasingly, customers will expect their security system to seamlessly integrate with other products to create a bespoke ‘beyond security’ solution.

Ranjith Suresh – Cloudview

The security market has changed year on year and 2022 will be no different. We will see further advancements in AI capabilities that go beyond just surveillance and provide businesses with video intelligence in real time. This will allow them to move from a reactive approach to making informed, proactive business decisions. The transition to the cloud will also gather pace as organisations recognise the benefits of a cloud-based surveillance solution. We’ve already seen several new, younger players enter the VSaaS market and their presence has grown significantly over the past 18 months. As individuals we live our lives in the cloud and from our mobile phones to the way we watch TV, the cloud is the core of modern-day living. It is now simply a matter of time before the security industry, as a whole, catches up. The new UK GDPR will make headlines again following the transition out of Europe and organisations will have to traverse yet another new set of rules to ensure the data they store is safe and secure. A fresh Data Bill is also in

www.psimagazine.co.uk

consultation so we could expect to see the outcome of that in 2022. Ultimately, with all these technological advancements and new regulations, customers decisions become much more challenging. They must balance their needs with the budgets and resources available, all the while ensuring data compliance is maintained. Therefore, it will be up to us as manufacturers to understand the customer pain points and create products and solutions that address these problems and provide real value to their business operations.

Increasingly, customers will expect their security system to seamlessly integrate with other products to create a bespoke ‘beyond security’ solution

Steve Howarth – Vemotion

The trend towards IP connected cameras sitting on a network will continue unabated in 2022, with the surveillance market becoming more integrated with IT, in a similar way as telecoms migrated to networks previously. As cameras increase in resolution and require greater bandwidth, the need to manage video networks will drive IT managers to take on more responsibility for security surveillance within their corporate networks. AI functionality and performance will continue to grow, and the use of AI will become widespread. We’ll see analytics being deployed to extract greater value from surveillance video, beyond that of purely being used for security alert and identification. To maximise the value of video, it will be used to improve business processes, with visual data being shared for analytical applications between different stakeholders. As mobile networks become much better, the use of wireless cameras for mobile applications, as opposed to hard-wired cameras, will increase. More and more solutions will be mobile enabled, as the requirement to be more agile in deployments can be readily achieved. The GDPR regulations around temporary deployments will drive continual use and re-location of cameras in this sector, which will deliver greater returns on investment and positive outcomes for deployments. The growing breadth of product solutions will inevitably drive some manufacturer consolidation, particularly within the more mature product sectors but conversely, we’ll also see the growth of new technology specialists. Political factors that forcibly coerce the use of some geographically manufactured products, may limit the ability of integrators to devise the best performing systems to be specified. Direction on what products are deemed fit for purpose, without bias, must be developed, and solid guidance given to the security industry to specify their usage, without hindrance or being penalised.

The pandemic will probably have more of an impact on access control choices than any other technology, so do you see contactless solutions becoming the norm over the next few years? The events of the last couple of years and effects of the pandemic have undoubtedly shaped the access control sector. The biggest impact has been the focus on going mobile. Whilst the shift to mobile access control was certainly forefront prior to the onset of Coronavirus, it was accelerated through the concerns over health, safety and sanitisation brought to the fore by the Coronavirus. Certainly Comelit has seen increased requests for its smart security systems to be monitored and controlled via our dedicated app and voice activated solutions. Alongside

requests for the practical benefits of mobile credentials using BLE (Bluetooth low energy,) that enable both multimodal and multi-factor authentication. Biometrics was another big adoption, especially contactless technology. Facial recognition has come into its own as organisations adopt it for identity verification and access control. Moving forward touchless fingerprints, iris, palm, voice, and even vain pattern may also impact the market. The world of cloud and SaaS services is another big trend which we see coming through. Traditionally, organisations would purchase hardware such as readers, panels, and cards, then wire the system to an on-site server. Installation, testing, and maintenance were manually conducted. With subscription-based systems, hardware like readers and panels remain on site, but servers, software, and data reside at the provider’s data centre. It’s a centralised way to manage all access, have 24/7 support, and receive the benefits of a large solution provider. Do you expect to continue with acquisitions, maybe once the dust has settled on this one? We are committed to growth, for the benefit of our team, our customers and the industry as a whole. Moving forward our investment is a commitment to research and development. As a group, we already invest eight per cent of turnover as part of a constant desire to innovate across our portfolio. And we will combine all our shared skills and expertise and jointly focus on product development of access control, door entry and security, together with fire safety across our sector targets. We know that the investment that needs to be made to bring PAC and GDX back to being market leaders does not end with the purchase of the business unit. So much will need to be invested to start growing and earning market share again, but Comelit UK is ready to do it and get involved. It means investment in research and development to make the products as innovative and modern as possible. Likewise a commitment to marketing, sales and customer support to leverage the product portfolio as much as possible. And finally an investment in the whole company infrastructure to allow Comelit-PAC to grow significantly. We are ready to grow and continue to deliver to meet industry requirements for innovative security and fire safety products.

together raising standards

Meet the installer – Q&A Every month we talk to an NSI approved installer about life in the business. This month we take a look back at what installers said this year:

What you told us in 2021..... Matthew Stanley – Astra Security What is the best thing about working in security? The daily challenge. Every job, no matter how big or small, has its unique properties. I work with a team of project managers and we can bounce ideas off each other, drawing on each other’s experiences to develop bespoke solutions to each unique requirement. Recently we have been working with a software company based in Germany for a bespoke PoS solution for one of our large retail customers. Being involved in the development of this unique solution and seeing how this will enable the stores to monitor, detect and deter theft at self- checkout trolley areas has been enjoyable.

Sam Rodway – Ambush Security Systems Do you have any 'go to' technology? For intruder we use both Pyronix and Texecom systems, each having their own benefits. Pyronix systems are perfect for domestic customers in particular, we fit a lot of Enforcer systems on smaller residential properties as their user friendly menus and app make them perfect for everyday use. Whereas the Texecom systems come in to their own for larger installations with the wireless Ricochet technology, discreet wireless range and high quality flush keypads. Their cloud services also enable us to remotely service and diagnose faults on monitored systems reducing engineer time on site and any inconvenience for the client. For CCTV we use a wide selection of the Dahua and HikVision range, with the latest technology being the full colour range which has been a big hit with our clients! The ability to identify the colour of clothing or a vehicle in the dark of night is a must, not only for the client but for the local authority. Not surprisingly we have seen a high demand for this technology. For access control and entryphone systems we use Paxton and CAME BPT, which we have used since I started in the industry, their product reliability and technical support is by far the best available.

www.psimagazine.co.uk

Rachel Evans – Jackson Fire & Security Is third party accreditation beneficial to your business? Yes hugely important to our business and it underpins everything we do. We want to work to the highest standards and provide quality for our customers and being third party accredited is the best way to demonstrate this. As we are a franchise opportunity, we can also offer this to people looking to start their own fire and security business which is a huge head start and takes a headache away from them.

David Salisbury – Zicam Integrated Security What would be your ultimate electronic security product? With the advent of video analytic technology this is improving year on year, our main partners utilise this technology which is embedded into the cameras, this is bolstered by AI technology which looking forward will be very exciting as to how this can be utilised.

James Twigg – TIS (Total Integrated Solutions) What impact has smart/home automation had on your business? Smart technology has had a hugely positive impact on our business. Take retirement villages, for example. We’re able to offer a range of technological solutions to everyday problems by installing things such as sensors to check whether a resident has opened their medication cupboard to take their meds each morning, or has pressed the “I’m Okay” button rather than requiring someone to physically go and knock on their door and check on them. We’re also rolling out wearable tech, like smart watches, so that residents can access support or check-in in a much more user friendly way. Smart technology is giving residents much more freedom and the retirement villages the ability to spend their money much more effectively.

together raising standards (continued from previous page)

Richard Hewes – Hewes Group Did you always want to be a tradesman or were there other dream careers? Leaving school I wanted to join the Met Police, but failed on my eyesight. Whilst waiting I had numerous jobs in the City starting as a post boy in a stockbrokers, not liking that, and in a short time I had three jobs in offices. But I wasn’t cut out for that. I had relations in the alarm industry so I started with AFA, who had just taken over Autocall, Sentinal, and Clarrion, in Wellington Street near Covent Garden when it was in use and I saw all the guys with their flat leather hats to carry all the produce on their heads. I was in AFA’s office due to the fact I came from an office environment, but I was not happy there and asked to work on the tools so they moved me to Parker Street.

Carlton Littleford – Carlton Alarms What would be a typical project for you? I don’t think there is exactly a typical project as we install from small domestic systems up to large commercials and everything in between. An ideal project would be a commercial client who wants us to install intruder, fire, access and CCTV; we aspire to be a “onestop” shop for our clients wherever possible as it’s more cost effective for them and more efficient for us, so everyone wins.

Steven Gardner – OCS Group UK What would make your job easier? The pace of the industry is so fast moving and it appears standards are almost changing daily/weekly. We are often correcting non-compliant installations which haven’t been installed to the newer standard. The industry appears to lack highly-skilled individuals, which is why apprenticeships are definitely required.

Nick Day – Armadillo Safeguards What would be a typical project for you? We have mainly been focusing on large multi-level projects, both in the commercial and high-end residential sectors. Across the board, we are seeing an increase in smart technologies and, as a result, we are noticing growing demand for IP control devices. The use of smart technologies in buildings has become an integral part of everyday life, offering convenience and flexibility for users. From lifts to heating, from alarm systems to access control, the range of critical infrastructures connected to the network and communicating with each other and with smartphones and other IoT devices is increasing. To keep up with the current IoT trends, the integration of products will become more and more important to add functionality and security features.

Gavin Bell – A.Alexander & Son Do you have any ‘go to’ technology and manufacturers? For intruder systems we stick to Honeywell Galaxy and Pyronix. The broad range of products provided allows us to install the most appropriate solution for any customer requirements. The Enforcer system has proven to be extremely popular with domestic customers with the easy to set up and use mobile app being very appealing. For fire alarms our preference is for Advanced control panels and Hochiki devices. Both products provide engineer friendly interfaces and installation advantages. Dahua is our go to for CCTV installs, with a large range of highdefinition full colour cameras and easy to navigate NVRs it is a big hit with clients and engineers alike. We stick to Paxton for access control – it is a proven performer in this category and provides solutions for all our requirements. Working in the care sector we have installed a number of nurse call systems with the C-Tec Quantec system being our preference for hard wired systems and Aidcall for wireless systems.

New access control system enables touch-free movement

Inner Range and installer Antron Security have delivered access and security at multi-tenant office The Bailey, in the heart of London. Knight Harwood commissioned Antron Security to design and install the new access and security system as part of wider refurbishment works at the site situated opposite the Old Bailey High Court. Key requirements were for users to be able to move through reception without crowds or queues, and for access to be touchless as far as possible. Knight Harwood also wanted suitable provision for disabled users, and to ensure it could change and grow the security system over time. The solution involved using Inner Range’s Integriti intelligent access control system. Mitsubishi lifts, with high-level lift controls and Bluepoint’s visitor management system formed the key integrations. The Mitsubishi lifts can read credentials from proximity cards, or mobile phones, at a user check-in point at reception, or in the lift lobby itself. The high-level lift integration with ‘destination control’ means the lift software takes into account

where each of the building’s lifts are, where the user’s ‘home floor’ is, as well as where other users are going/due to go, and instantly calculates the quickest lift for the new user. The user is immediately directed to the most efficient lift via a display screen at reception, or in the lift lobby. If users are able to go to more than one floor, they can update their preference in the lift itself. This integration ensures users move through reception quickly and efficiently with no unnecessary stops. The integration with Bluepoint’s visitor management system means tenants can invite their own guests and generate access credentials via QR codes that are valid for one entry and exist on the appointment day and time. The QR code gives the visitor access everything they need, including lifts and any locked doors enroute. Other elements of the new system included Came BPT video entry panels to allow disabled users to access the building near the dedicated disabled parking bay, as well as for any visitors out-of-hours to contact the security team. CCTV cameras from Hikvision have been installed throughout the site to create a hardwired IP closed circuit television system. They are integrated with the Integriti access control system, which allows for ‘cause and effect’ monitoring. Cabling provision for speed lanes or other entry turnstiles was installed, to ensure the system could easily adapt to this in future. Richard Harvell, engineering director, at Knight Harwood, who managed the refurbishment at The Bailey, said: “Our key requirement was to be able to move users, including visitors, swiftly through reception to their correct floors with minimal or no touch points. And all without compromising security. Antron Security’s solution, which centred around Inner Range’s Integriti, more than delivers. The high-level lift integration automatically directs users to the fastest lift for their floor, and only allows access beyond reception for those with bona fide credentials.”

Logistics hub upgrades from analogue CCTV system An HD IP surveillance system from Dahua Technology is providing 24/7 security and operations management at a freight and logistics hub in Cannock, West Midlands. The 54-camera system has been installed throughout Pentalver’s 37-acre site. The equipment includes 5MP dome cameras with IR illumination up to 50m, 180-degree panoramic domes comprising an array of four 2MP cameras each with IR up to 60m, 5MP bullet cameras, 4MP ptz network cameras, and 5MP 360-degree internal dome cameras. All cameras feature Dahua’s Starlight lowlight technology, and AI functionality with deep learning algorithms to detect events such as perimeter breaches, movement detection and scene change. The installation also includes Dahua’s DSS Express video management system, enabling users to view images only relevant to them, two Dahua 32-channel 36TB NVRs and 12 ruggedised network PoE switches. The site consists of freight container storage in one section and road haulage transport in the other. It was previously equipped with an ageing analogue CCTV system, elements of which were in various states of disrepair and which had become unfit for purpose. The objective for the new system was to provide high-definition monitoring of the whole site at all times, for security and for logistics managers to be able to have access to images relevant to them, partitioned by the Dahua DSS Express video management system. The installer, Richards CCTV, was tasked with providing a perimeter protection solution as well as a range of PTZ cameras around the site. The

Camouflaged CCTV installed at MediaCity in Manchester An unobtrusive security solution from Axis Communications is providing 24/7 protection for tenants and visitors while retaining a vibrant atmosphere at MediaCity, an international hub for technology, innovation and creativity in Greater Manchester. It had become increasingly clear in recent years that MediaCity’s analogue surveillance system was outdated and no longer fit for purpose. RS Security Consultants was tasked with auditing the site’s security architecture and recommending a new system. The Axis IP security system was deployed to deliver video surveillance, with real-time security alerts to a central control room. The solution also reportedly reduces ongoing maintenance costs and is in keeping with the hub’s sustainability and cybersecurity goals. Utilising the new system has helped the team at MediaCity achieve their security requirements with IP cameras being camouflaged to match the surroundings. The MediaCity team can now benefit from protection without it having an impact on the atmosphere across the site, and

biggest challenge was the installation of the network infrastructure, with multiple fibre links between remote buildings and the central office. This was achieved using ruggedised network PoE switches with 2Gb ports for high speed connection. Richard Harte, General Manager at the Cannock terminal, said that good security and visibility of operations is essential for such a large and busy site with a bonded storage area. “With the previous system, we came to recognise how poor our sight over the depot was. Security is key for us, but we also use the system to have good visibility of our operations, as well as for health and safety and training purposes. Richard and his team are so satisfied with the solution that they are advocating its rollout across other Pentalver sites. going largely unnoticed by the many people that use the space every day. Tony Chebrika, Head of Security at Peel Media, which part-owns MediaCity, adds, “We’ve created a community here in which thousands of people work, live and enjoy themselves, and we want to ensure that they can continue to do so. We’re delighted with the system that’s been installed and that we chose partners with a shared focus on sustainability and cybersecurity.” David Needham, Axis Communications, concludes, “We’ve combined video, audio and on-board analytics to deliver a solution that successfully achieved all of our objectives. Safety has been improved and ongoing maintenance costs reduced. Real-time alerts mean the security team can make live security decisions. In short, we’ve helped MediaCity become safer and smarter.”

YMCA benefits from plug and play CCTV installation YMCA Heart of England has upgraded video systems across its facilities in Birmingham, Solihull, Rugby and Coventry with a roll-out of endto-end DirectIP technology from IDIS. Systems integrator Unison Integrated Technology was asked to replace YMCA’s poorly performing mix-and-match systems, incorporating elements from different vendors, with more efficient end-to-end technology from IDIS. YMCA reportedly selected IDIS because the single-source model offers advantages including assured compatibility and ease of installation, lower upfront costs, ongoing tech support and long term value. At the YMCA Birmingham centre, for example, the inefficient video has been replaced by an IDIS DirectIP solution comprising a 32-channel NVR; 19 Full-HD vandal-resistant IR domes; and 11 Full-HD IR bullet cameras. The IDIS technology was easy to implement thanks to its plug-and-play design, allowing the project to be completed without interruption to day-to-day activity at the centre. The 2.8mm fixed lens 2MP dome and bullet cameras, equipped with true WDR and IR LED, were set up to capture images of the building exteriors,

New fire detection panels at Bloomfield Shopping Centre A Nittan Evolution fire detection system has been installed into the Bloomfield Shopping Centre in Bangor by Nittan Elite Partner Solutions for Systems, based in Northern Ireland. A new fire detection system was required at the site and, following detailed proposals by Solutions for Systems, a Nittan Evolution system was installed. The new fire detection systems feature eight Nittan Evolution 1 fire alarm control panels installed in a network at strategic locations throughout the site, enabling site personnel to quickly access and assess any alerts on the fire alarm system without needing to return to the control room or to have dedicated staff located at a single panel in a control room. entrances and internal corridors and communal areas day and night. And the 4K NVR delivers throughput of up to 960ips real-time recording and live monitoring with no visible latency. Unison also opted to replace all the legacy cabling, upgrading to Cat6. This new infrastructure will allow YMCA Heart of England to take advantage of increased video resolutions in the future, making it easy for them to adopt IDIS Deep Learning Analytics for a range of automated detection functions that trigger alarms and notifications. The new solution is simple to use, with the license-free IDIS Center VMS giving staff and authorised volunteers an intuitive interface to manage devices, benefitting from live monitoring and rapid retrieval of footage, while easily configuring user permissions to provide team members with appropriate role-based access rights. “YMCA Heart of England were so impressed with the results we delivered at their Birmingham centre they then asked us to upgrade all their premises across the whole region,” says Matthew Rodden, Director, Unison Integrated Technology. The entire project was completed in four weeks. And reducing waste and costs further, a number of third-party legacy cameras were retained to operate under the IDIS Center VMS. Dual Optical Heat Detectors were selected, which feature Nittan’s Dual Optical Technology to reduce false alarms, which retail environments are often prone to. Furthermore, the detectors also incorporate an A2R class heat detector. As such, the units are capable of monitoring two very different by-products of a fire –smoke and heat. The Evolution EV-DPH-A2R Detectors sit on Nittan EV-AV2-Sounder Beacon Bases which provide both sound and visual indication of alarm. The new BS5839 Part 1 compliant Nittan Evolution system installed at Bloomfield Shopping Centre is now in operation and meeting the needs of its customer. It provides the level of protection required from the cost of the equipment through to the installation and ongoing maintenance. The open protocol ensures the system can interface with the existing centre BMS and those in retail units.
