ou’d be forgiven for thinking that this column is turning into a Covid 19 update feature, but I’m trying my best not to go that way, but unfortunately while I had planned on an incredible piece focusing on a most interesting topic, the biggest news of the month was once again lockdown related - and this time it affected PSI’s plans directly. Due to the unfolding news on 14th June that the latest lockdown was to be extended by four weeks until the middle of July, it meant that we had a tricky decision to make; go ahead with the PSI Golf Day and Awards Dinner on the 1st July as planned, or move the date to later in the year, by when everything should be back to normal. As an aside, if it’s not all back to normal by later on in the year we may as well forget about returning to the good old days forever. Once we read through the Covid regulations for mass indoor gatherings it became obvious what we needed to do - so the date has now been moved to 2nd September. I’m not making any accusations against any specific people in the industry (you know who you are), but once it was made clear that the bar had to be closed as soon as the awards presentation ended, we knew what our decision had to be. The good news is that we’ve now got a few extra months to prepare for the event and also it has allowed us to add to the list of categories that recognise the best in the business. The new category is Technical Support Provider of the Year and is open to manufacturers and distributors who go above and beyond when it comes to helping installers with kit. There is no shortlist to choose from, just go to the PSI website, click on Vote and enter the name of the company you think deserves the credit. So go on then, you say, tell us what you would have written about if the lockdown had lifted on 21st June. Well it would have been something along the lines of “where do you see yourself in fifty years?” because in this month’s edition we talk to two installers with an unbelievable number of years under their belts. Richard Hewes has been in the security sector for 60 years and Nigel Greenberg is in Year 50. That’s longer than most of you have been alive. Can you begin to imagine the technology changes they have lived through from what was available in the early days to where we are today? It is an honour feature both of them this month. Voted PSI Distributor of the Year 11 times The UK’s #1 Fire and Security Distributor...

INDUSTRY NEWS Industry stalwart Tony Allen passes away In June it was announced via the BSIA that Tony Allen, Chairman of the Association’s wholly owned subsidiary Skills for Security and supporter of the BSIA for over 40 years had passed away. Tony was 75 and had been ill for a short while. A physics graduate and a one-time technical lecturer, Tony held senior positions at Scantronic and was a founder of Dycon, as well as holding many board positions across the industry, including BSIA SEMs chairman and most recently as Director and Chairman of Skills for Security. Simon Banks, Chairman, BSIA, said: “Tony brought a unique combination of talents to the roles he was responsible for. His considerable commercial experience combined with his own brand of discipline gave him a passion for understanding the systems and processes of the security sector. “In his last major role as Chairman of Skills for Security these talents, combined with strong communication skills, meant he was instrumental in steering the company out of the poor financial position while also relentlessly driving quality improvements to course content and delivery. It was Tony’s tenacity and persuasion that convinced me to become Chairman of the BSIA over three years ago. He genuinely believed in the Association and saw the value of a professional security industry where others didn’t.”

“Tony brought a unique combination of talents to the roles he was responsible for. His considerable commercial experience combined with his own brand of discipline gave him a passion for understanding the systems and processes of the security sector”

Long-time friend and colleague Tony Makosinski of Dycon Power told PSI: “Tony hated ‘officialdom’ and bureaucracy, as he said that the most of what ‘Jobsworths’ proposed held back innovation and stifled product development. It was this that drove me and him to push to develop the UK market for radio alarm systems and products. “Tony backed me in promoting the introduction of BS6799 and tasked me with ensuring that that it became the de facto standard in the professional security market, both here and in the EU. This resulted in the now legendary Scantronic Radio Roadshow tour, 43 cities throughout the UK and EU over a period of four months, which drove the sales to a record level but, more importantly, laid the ground for today’s proliferation of radio alarm systems. “He drove the BSIA SEMS (Security Equipment Manufacturers Section) with the same passion to drive out waffle and focus on quality manufacturing and meaningful standards, and that will be missed.” A larger than life character, Crystal Palace fan Tony Allen was a close ally of PSI magazine even though he had the unnerving ability to forget which football team the editor supported whenever they got together. He was a regular sight on our stand at IFSEC and enjoyed many a night at PSI Premier Awards Dinners. They didn’t make many like Tony Allen, he will be greatly missed and his impact on the security industry cannot be overstated.

THE BOTTOM LINE I N A S S O C I AT I O N W I T H C S L

Euralarm releases its Annual Report for 2020-2021 outlining growth Euralarm has released its Annual Report 2020-2021. Traditionally, the annual report covers the period running between the General Assemblies of the association. This year however, due to the COVID-19 crisis, the General Assembly will take place end of November. Nevertheless, it was decided to release the Annual Report, as always, in May. The Annual Report follows the structure of Euralarm, every section and committee of the association summarising their activities over the previous year and, where appropriate, providing forecasts and plans for the future. For Euralarm 2020 was also an important year. The professional team was extended, enabling the association to be more present and proactively participate in projects and meetings from the Commission, CEN, CCMC and Orgalim. This step forward has also been noticed by key stakeholders from the different organisations. Euralarm plans to continue to expand its presence in those areas which are important for the members. Over the 2020-2021 period Euralarm testified of an ongoing growth in membership with Vanderbilt, Verisure, Kiwa and the Open Security & Safety Alliance (OSSA) as new members.

Grosvenor and Third Millennium form access control partnership Grosvenor Technology is partnering with Third Millennium incorporating the company’s access control readers into the Janus C4 platform. The collaboration aims to enable Grosvenor to expand further into the access control space and support a large number of readers, hardware and customers. Steve Greenaway, Business Development Manager at Third Millennium, said: “The multi-technology reader range provides Grosvenor customers with true migration capabilities, and enables them in most cases to move to a secure platform whist retaining their existing card population.” James Savage, Product Manager for Access Control at Grosvenor Technology, commented: “It’s been a pleasure working with the team at Third Millennium to offer our customers a range of SIA OSDP verified readers and ‘out of the box’ support for secure MIFARE DESFire EV2 smart credentials.”

The interview that gets the facts from the top This month Simon Banks talks to Ken Meanwell, Compliance Manager at the UK’s Police Crime Prevention Initiatives (PCPI). They seek to achieve sustainable reductions in crime through design and other approaches to help people live in a safer society. How have the last 18 months of the Covid environment impacted the Police? The first Covid lockdown saw Police URN applications drop significantly, however since October 2020 we have noticed a sharp increase. The NPCC (National Police Chiefs’ Council) believe that the increase has been influenced by multiple factors including the catch-up from the first Covid lockdown, increased awareness of crime at both homes and businesses and end-users having more time to reassess their security needs. Interestingly, applications do not just favour urban environments and we have seen increases in rural communities as well. In part, this could be due to recent investments in rural 4G connectivity and the general move away from PSTN to Radio technologies. This is also encouraging for the ECHO (Electronic Call Handling Operations) initiative that is beginning to gather pace. With more and more URNs being provided, it is important that police forces across the country utilise the latest technology to improve their response times. ECHO will mean police responses could be up to 3 times quicker. In addition, police force control rooms will now be tougher on requests for a response from non-compliant alarm systems reported via the 999 or 101 networks. This would mean where end-users dial 999 after a smartphone alert may be refused or receive a downgraded response. Can you tell us a little bit more about the initiatives you are involved with? Possibly our best-known initiative is the highly successful Secured by Design (SBD), a product-based accreditation scheme – the Police Preferred Specification – that provides a recognised standard for all security products that can deter and reduce crime. We have recently introduced an SBD Standard for intruder alarms which builds on police and industry knowledge and expertise to produce a new, enhanced alarm standard that will provide a high-quality alarm system with the risk of false calls reduced. Personally, I am involved in two initiatives. The first is to provide the secretariat for the NPCC’s Security Systems Group (SSG). Working with the private security industry and the alarm inspectorate bodies, we have reduced the number of false calls to the police by over 1 million since we began administering the scheme. The second initiative is the Community and Railway Safety Accreditation Schemes (CSAS and RSAS). These schemes provide an opportunity for organisations that provide community safety and security services to enter into a formal agreement with their local Chief Officer, allowing accredited employees to be granted limited but targeted powers for them to undertake their role more effectively. Manufacturers are currently facing a global component shortage. What advice has PCPI offered? A shortage of components due to the Covid-19 pandemic is a major cause of concern for the fire and security industry. Hopefully, this will improve as worldwide production and transportation recovers in the months ahead. In the meantime, product supply to the sector is vital if we are to protect lives and property. If premises are without the correct level of protection for either fire or security, this may result in serious consequences. PCPI and the NPCC SSG would be grateful for, and would encourage prioritisation to the manufacturers of fire and security equipment. It is hoped that the most critical premises will receive alarm products to avoid any loss of life, damage to property and unnecessary risk exposure of insured losses.

YOU SAID IT! “The phasing out of PSTN is ongoing and CSL equipment is our product of choice for bringing existing systems into line with IP communication upgrades.” BCS Security Solutions Ltd – LinkedIn – 6th March Tweet us @CSLGroupLtd

What’s in the box? Turret camera Quick start guide Drilling template Waterproof RJ45 cover Security Torx wrench Screws and wall fixings

T

he SPRO DHIPD80 “Turret” style camera is an IP67 externally rated 8MP (4k) camera with a 2.8mm fixed lens, “ColourNight” operation and Active Deterrence capability. It has a built-in speaker and microphone along with external audio connection and alarm input and output. Available in Dark Grey or White finish with optional deep base and wall and pole mounting brackets.

Getting started

A supplied QR code label gives access to a website with copies of the Quick Start Guide and an Operation Manual. Additional software can be downloaded to provide Video Management and PC based NVR functionality 12

The camera is PoE fed (8.2W maximum, 3.5W basic) or can be powered from a 12v DC supply. In addition to the RJ45 network socket, connections are available on the multi-way connection lead for Audio In and Out on individual phono (RCA) connectors, flying lead alarm input and output and the barrel power input jack. A waterproof shroud is only provided for the RJ45 connector so the other connections must be suitably environmentally protected if likely to be exposed to moisture. A supplied QR code label gives access to a website with copies of the Quick Start Guide and an Operation Manual. Additional software can be downloaded to provide Video Management and PC based NVR functionality. Once powered up from a suitable PoE network port the camera must be initialised and then configured, DHCP is not enabled so the camera

Luxrite – SPRO DHIPD80

has a default IP address of 192.168.1.108. The quick guide suggests using “ConfigTool.exe” to locate and initialise the camera however this software is not provided and must be downloaded from a third-party site. Alternatively, the initialisation can be undertaken during the first browser connection if your PC is set to the appropriate subnet for the camera’s default address. The camera could be accessed with all major browsers’ but best performance was found with IE11. The initialisation is straightforward beginning with Region and language setting, followed by Time zone details. This is then followed by the password entry screen that gives advice on format and an indication of security level with an e-mail option for password resetting. A P2P option is then given with a QR code for App download for remote connectivity plus a Firmware Auto-update option, these can be unticked if not required. It was found that there was just a still image from the Main Stream display at first use, this was due to the use of H.265 compression being used by default. Changing to H.264 gave a correct live browser view. Sub Stream 2 is disabled by default so must be enabled if required.

Menu options The SPRO browser connection gives a series of Tabs for selecting Live, Playback, Setting, Alarm and Logout options. The “Setting” tab replaces the live view with a configuration screen with a menu tree down the left-hand side giving access to the following options: Camera: Conditions – All picture settings such as Exposure, Backlight, WB, Day / Night, Illumination and Profiles. Video – Main and Sub stream settings, Snapshot, Overlay (inc. Privacy) and ROI. Audio – Main and Sub stream audio format and Alarm announcements. Network: TCP/IP, Port, PPPoE, DDNS, SMTP, UPnP, Bonjour, Multicast, Auto Register, 802.1x, QOS, Access Platform (P2P, ONVIF, RTMP). Storage: Schedule (Record, Snapshot & Holidays), Destination (Path, Local, FTP, NAS), Record Control. System: General (inc. Date & Time), Account, Safety, Default, Import / Export, Auto Maintain, Upgrade. Information: Version details, Logs and Online User. By default, the camera uses GMT when set to a UK location, but the System Date and Time setting allows Daylight saving dates to be entered and the function enabled. Other Icons on the Browser are used to Set / Unset the Alarm output, to trigger the warning light, to sound the alarm, to take a snapshot image and to turn on the audio. A wide range of security and encryption options are included within the Network and System Safety menu trees.

Performance

Triggering the alarm output contact allows external devices or site lighting to be activated. Alternatively with a suitably configured system you can speak directly through the inbuilt loudspeaker to inform or warn off intruders 14

The 1/2.8”, 8MP sensor gives a high level of image detail from its 3840 x 2160 pixel sensor (16:9) at up to 20 fps if AI detection is used or up to 25 fps if not. The 2.8mm fixed lens gives a field of view of 107° H x 56° V. The “ColourNight” feature provides good definition and correct colour at very low light levels, with sensitivity stated as 0.007 Lux. This in practice is not as sensitive as some of the current 4MP offerings but has the advantage of much higher resolution. While the pixel count is much higher than the majority of security monitors can display, the ability to electronically zoom in on recordings has the potential for greater evidential value. Where no light exists, the camera is supported by its white-light LED illuminator mounted on the front of the camera. This can be left on Auto or manually adjusted from 0 to 100% from its default of 50% and provides a warm-white lighting that is rated to 30 metres. 3D noise reduction effectively removes AGC noise. The camera can be easily set up to detect either any scene motion or using smart mode with AI for specific detection of people or vehicles entering the scene or crossing a detection line or area. On

alarm the camera can be set to record the event to its SD card (up to 256GB) or connected NAS drive, to signal a warning from its alternately flashing front mounted Red and Blue LEDs with a High, Medium or Low rate for 5 to 30 seconds per intrusion and to e-mail a user if required. An audio warning can be associated with the alarm, and this can be selected from a range of 10 included files such as “Danger no climbing”, “No parking here”, “Private land no entry” and “You are under surveillance”; or a piercing alarm tone or user created Wav files can be uploaded. The message can be repeated 1 to 10 times per alarm. Triggering the alarm output contact allows external devices or site lighting to be activated. Alternatively with a suitably configured system you can speak directly through the inbuilt loudspeaker to inform or warn off intruders. Audio level or abnormality detection is set using a graphic display indicator for level and threshold. The camera was able to detect human subjects of greater than 5% of screen height, but improved results were found with subjects above 8%; careful adjustment for specific scenes would be expected to improve on this. The manual gives confusing figures relating to screen height and pixel count for people detection and appears to suggest a minimum of 10%, but this could be due to translation errors. Video clips are recorded onto the micro-SD card and can be downloaded as .dav files and snapshots as .jpg, these can be replayed via the browser “Playback” tab or using the SPRO CSS software. Up to four privacy zones can be added to the view. These are black rectangles that are simply moved to a suitable location on the screen and sized to suit. The free download software package for video management “SPRO CSS” and PC recording “PCNVR” are straightforward to load and operate and can be used to create a low-cost recording and display solution. ONVIF compliance means that this camera can be used on compatible existing recording systems as well as the Luxrite range of 4k NVRs.

Conclusion A very sensitive “Turret” style camera with high definition and some excellent features for deterring intruders.

EDITOR’S CHOICE

EDITOR’S CHOICE The security industry is busy and complex, so it’s easy to miss new products and services as they get lost in day-to-day activities. Every now and again, certain products grab our attention so here we take a look at a few of the products we think you won’t want to miss this month.

NDAA compliant Super Fisheye is now available

Electronic padlock for wire-free security Abloy UK has launched the SMARTair i-gate Electronic Padlock, which boasts resistance to attack and extreme weather, wire-free installation, and batterypowered operation. This new device in the SMARTair wireless access control range enables the addition of realtime control to non-electrified gates, cupboards, cabinets, crates and more — wherever they are and whatever the climate. For many organisations, security and access needs do not stop at the perimeter door. Gates and outbuildings are hard to reach with cabling. Upgrading an existing padlocked closure involves simply swapping the devices and integrating the i-gate Padlock into an existing or new SMARTair wireless access control system assaabloyopeningsolutions.co.uk

Updated camera series featuring AI capabilities Panasonic has announced the updated range of S-Series cameras. The cameras come pre-bundled with the i-PRO in-house apps AI Video Motion Detection (AIVMD) and AI Privacy Guard. They provide instant access to intelligent security functions such as intruder or loitering detection, whilst making sure to protect the privacy rights of individuals by pixelating their figures or faces; important for businesses where privacy laws are in force, such as Europe with GDPR. Besides these two default applications, there are three new additions to the iPRO inhouse application range: AI Face, People and Vehicle Detection enable easy and quick search of footage based on pictures of faces – even when masked – or pre-defined attributes for people and vehicles. All these applications are included free-of-charge to aid the AI-ification of businesses. Lifting AI beyond the purely visual level, sound classifications picked up by external microphones, such as gunshots, yelling, vehicle horns or glass breaking have also been added to the range. business.panasonic.co.uk/security-solutions

INTERVIEW

The power of security We talk to James Douglas of GS Yuasa Battery Sales UK about products for the security sector and discover that not all batteries are the same his year is a big one for GS Yuasa with various company milestones and the introduction of the new Yu-Lite range of Nickel Cadmium (NiCd), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Lithium batteries. PSI caught up with James Douglas, European Group Marketing Manager at GS Yuasa Battery Europe to talk about specialised batteries for the security sector and to discuss landmark celebrations for the business.

T

How have the events of 2020-21 affected battery sales? Demand in the security market has been noticeably down obviously due to the pandemic when we saw numerous commercial buildings and new properties being mothballed. In addition, some companies have not opened since the first lockdown and even those businesses that have been trading throughout 2020-21 have not been investing in standby power at the levels they were prior to the pandemic, probably due to the uncertainty surrounding the whole situation. For us in the security market, business has been noticeably down, but for the company as a whole that was offset by the automotive sector, which actually saw an unprecedented level of demand because of the reduced usage of vehicles. With vehicles having been either parked up or only driven for short journeys, batteries have been failing prematurely. This has meant that the demand for automotive batteries has been absolutely huge. However we're definitely seeing the signs of a recovery now, so in London and the big cities we are expecting the fire and security business to bounce back really strongly.

are occasions we really do want to celebrate with colleagues and customers to reward them for the loyalty that they have shown us over the years. Due to the uncertainty around Covid we've had to hold off on the celebrations so far this year, but we will be doing something as soon as we can. Around 60% of the batteries that you make in Wales are exported so are you concerned about Brexit? No not at all. For anything made in the UK we have zero tariffs into Europe thanks to the trade agreement so that's obviously a positive for us, but most importantly we only transact and supply our sister companies in Europe. So we only supply our batteries to GS Yuasa companies on the continent and then they distribute to their own customers from there. Therefore because it's is inter-company purchasing there isn't any effect of Brexit for us. Why do we need specialised batteries for security systems? What people need to keep in mind is no matter how good the security system is it is only as good as the battery that's backing it up. That battery is only ever really used or tested at that critical moment when it needs to perform. With that in mind it is obviously crucial that the

This year the company is celebrating 40 years of production in Ebbw Vale. Have you got any celebrations planned? It's a massive milestone for us and it's not the only one for us this year either. In addition to the 40 year anniversary of our GS Yuasa Battery Manufacturing UK factory in Wales we are also marking 40 years of GS Yuasa Battery Sales UK, our sales operation based in Swindon. These are two key anniversaries for us in the UK and

battery operates as it should and also that it's the correct spec and the correct type for the system. The battery is a critical part of the installation. Do you think that battery quality is often overlooked when it comes to the installation? I think it can be. Unfortunately some installers will always focus on price, which we would never recommend because by doing that, particularly if you are buying cheaper or substandard batteries that are not up to the job, the whole system can be compromised. It is completely counterproductive to be building a system to provide security that is not fit for purpose. Another thing to consider is that quality products will deliver a long service life and also perform as specified so they are going to be reliable when in service. If you are buying and specifying a cheaper product, it's not economical in the long run as you will have to regularly replace the batteries and an unreliable alarm is not good for anyone especially your customer who is relying on you to provide a properly functioning alarm system.

by batteries using different technologies and much smaller batteries such as the CR123A small lithium cells in sensors. There is a much bigger demand for these batteries that we wouldn't have seen ten years ago and it is driven by the new developments, in particular the wireless innovations, coming out from the alarm systems manufacturers. These smaller batteries have come into mainstream use alongside VRLA, Ni-Cd and Ni-MH and rechargeable Lithium packs. Do you think that one day CCTV will be widely battery-powered? It's a tough question and to be honest, I think we may well do; it is certainly the way that things appear to be going. The only restriction on that happening is the battery life being good enough. We are currently at the stage where video doorbells can utilise batteries but these are triggered by motion, whereas true CCTV require a constant draw of power. I'm sure that as battery life increases we will get there with CCTV, but it could be ten years or so away.

How have batteries changed over the years? The main change is the types of batteries that are needed to suit the new security technologies hitting the market. The development of wireless alarm systems for example is really driving that change. In the past it would have just used valve regulated lead–acid (VRLA) batteries but now there are a lot of components in the system being powered

Meet the installer Did you always want to be a tradesman or were there other dream careers? Leaving school I wanted to join the Met Police, but failed on my eyesight. Whilst waiting I had numerous jobs in the City starting as a post boy in a stockbrokers, not liking that, and in a short time I had three jobs in offices. But I wasn’t cut out for that. I had relations in the alarm industry so I started with AFA, who had just taken over Autocall, Sentinal, and Clarrion, in Wellington Street near Covent Garden when it was in use and I saw all the guys with their flat leather hats to carry all the produce on their heads. I was in AFA’s office due to the fact I came from an office environment, but I was not happy there and asked to work on the tools so they moved me to Parker Street. You began as a locksmith then moved into installing alarms, what was the attraction? When I began my career in the security industry we use to install contacted Chubb locks to control the setting of alarms silently in newsagents and off licences which operated out of normal hours. It was then using those locks that led me into fitting locks for other people. Then after many years I wanted to work for myself, so I use to go out knocking on doors to ask people if they wanted any locks fitted. It was during this time I became a Master Locksmith. Can you remember what the early alarm installations were like? Which manufacturers were around? There were no electronics, just hard wiring. On windows we use to fit tube and wiring, microswitches on doors and to fully protect a door, we used to wire the doors with fine wire and then cover the door with hardboard. In those days alarm companies made their own equipment; the first electronic technology that I can remember was an ultrasonic unit which was in a small black

box that resembled a speaker. Then came a product from Ademco called a Contronic. How did you learn your skills in both security and the business side of things? In the alarm industry I was a trainee to begin with, working with other senior engineers, until I was competent enough to install on my own. We had supervisors who used to arrive on site unannounced to check your work. When completed they would visit the site and if anything was amiss we had to return and correct it in our own time.

What is the best thing about working this industry? Working in many types of premises; residential, and commercial and also seeing many other types of industries. Has third party accreditation been beneficial to you? After leaving AFA I joined Brocks Alarms and moved to their branch in Southend-on-Sea. I became the supervisor and when Brocks was taken over by Modern Alarms, I eventually became a surveyor, but my dream was to work for myself. I left Modern Alarms in the mid-70s and because I had become a Master Locksmith with

“Being a family business with both my sons, Matthew is my MD and Nigel my sales director, we are always on top of any problems that may arise”

the MLA I took the plunge and ventured into the physical side of our industry, installing locks and safes. It was not long when I was being asked to install alarm systems, which I did. Many insurance companies that I knew would not recommend me unless I was approved. So I became the first privately owned company in Essex to become NSCIA. Then again the first to acquire BS5750 All this was achieved from working from a railway arch in Chelmsford. Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems? Have these changed since the early days? Being a family business with both my sons, Matthew is my MD and Nigel my sales director, we are always on top of any problems that may arise. We also became members of NASIC, which is the National Association of Security Installation

Companies with over 60 members nationwide. This gives our company the opportunity to look after many national contracts. What is the security/fire industry’s biggest myth? Not sure if there is a myth, but as an old school alarm guy I could not get my head round the difference of alarm zones and fire zones. Do you currently have any ‘go to’ technology/manufacturers? In recent years we have been using Hikvision and a London based company called GTec for CCTV, but CSL has been an inspiration. Right from the early days of meeting Simon Banks as a young man, that company has impressed me for many years. What has been the most important technology change in your time in security? The mobile telephone. My first was a Motorola which was fitted into my VW van which I could disconnect. I can remember going to an early IFSEC with this breeze block shoulder carrier thinking I was the bee’s knees. What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself? Be confident in what you know. Don’t be afraid of going the extra mile for a customer and most of all be honest. Will England ever win the World Cup again? Sadly I never had the time to follow football as I was always working. But to answer the question, a big fat yes! If you won £25,000 what would you do with the money? I know many people who I could share it with!

THE 3xLOGIC BLOG

Grow recurring revenue Build a recurring revenue business model using 3xLOGIC

I

Follow PSI

ncreasingly, organisations are turning to recurring revenue streams to provide regular income. Once a tactic of business-to-consumer organisations, now more business-to-business organisations are exploring this commercial model. Security systems are next in line, with forward-thinking installers turning to solutions like 3xLOGIC to set-up recurring revenue models.

Innovation in security technology For over 15 years, 3xLOGIC has been innovating in the security technology sector, helping end-users and installers improve their business intelligence, cut costs, reduce downtime and connect disparate data sets. Now, the company is turning its attention to recurring revenue, delivered through its fully integrated products and software across video, access control, analytics, and more.

The benefits of recurring revenue Working with 3xLOGIC, installers can become trusted, high-value strategic partners to their end-users and encourage them to return for new deployments again and again. Having a recurring revenue option helps installers to build a continuous foundation for their business with fewer peaks and troughs. In turn, this can make the business more valuable (and sellable) as well as improving its resilience against sudden external events that are otherwise out of a business’ control. With a recurring revenue model set-up, the relationship between an installer and end-user also becomes more long-term. End-users are more likely to return to an installer for any add-ons and upgrades, as pre-existing communication is already there.

How 3xLOGIC can help 3xLOGIC has software (VIGIL Video Management and infinias Access Control) that enables installers to create recurring revenue models. A security system, for example, can be monitored remotely through VIGIL Server, to understand when it requires maintenance or when a device is suddenly offline. Through this, installers can sell maintenance packages based on what the system tells them an enduser needs, or can quickly alert on-site staff if a camera or access control device has been tampered with. Other insights include understanding if a camera is focused, if it has moved out of view, and if the server is running with good bandwidth.

A real-world example Having this continuous health check service can be invaluable to local authorities. Recently an integration partner of ours was able to detect a camera that went down at the customer’s site and was then able to diagnose and fix the issue remotely. The next day, that camera captured images that helped authorities track down several suspects who were wanted in connection with breaking into a car on-site. Having a recurring revenue model, therefore, doesn’t just set an installer’s business up for success, but also gives end-users more peace-of-mind.

The next level With 3xLOGIC, installers can provide a single-source solution that’s easy to install, scalable, and offers a recurring revenue stream - taking their business to the next level with consistent, reliable income and continuous maintenance of an end-user’s system.

INSTALLER INTERVIEW

A lifetime in security This year, Nigel Greenberg of Solo Security commences 50 years in the industry. PSI caught up with him to find out about the early days and how things have changed f you started a security company in 2021 it wouldn’t be until 2071 that you would be able to claim 50 years in the business. That puts into perspective the longevity of the career and the experience of Nigel Greenberg of Solo Security in Liverpool who this year commences on his Golden Anniversary year in the industry. PSI caught up with Nigel to find out about how he started in the sector and to discuss a lifetime in security and began by asking him how he first got into the security installation business: “I trained as a radio and audio engineer and was a co-owner of the recording studio at Liverpool's World famous Cavern Club (where the Beatles started) from 1964 – 1966,” remembers Nigel. “I then spent a number of years living and working in the recording industry in Israel, returning to England in early 1972. I took a job selling commercial security products to industry on the strength of having lived and worked in the most security conscious country in the world, however, it soon became apparent to me that there was a market for domestic security systems that none of the big alarm companies were targeting.” In those early days there wasn’t a host of systems manufacturers with ranges of security systems and technologies to choose from, it was very much a case of “if you need something, make it yourself ” as Nigel recalls. “I designed a domestic alarm system from scratch and started installing them in friends’ and contacts’ homes in April 1972. Detection devices were flush mounted magnetic contacts and under carpet pressure mats which were positioned in front of the display cabinet in the lounge where the family silver was displayed. Slim pressure mats were also positioned under the carpet on the stairs. The first movement detectors were ultrasonic units which detected all movement and were a constant source of false alarms until PIRs came along. “We eventually progressed to commercially manufactured panels by such firms as A & G, K J Bentley, Grahame Lowe and Geoff Gardiner. All

of these firms seemed to be concentrated in the Chadderton area of Manchester. We would purchase plastic bell boxes and have our own logos printed on self- adhesive vinyl stickers to stick on to them. “Who remembers tube and wire frames on windows and lace wire under hardboard to protect doors? What about window foil on shop windows? We had mortice locks with shunt switches on front doors before the advent of timed entry exit circuits on control panels. “For those of us brave enough to embrace police calling systems, we first had to apply to be listed with our local Force on their register of approved firms. We had to be approved by the Force’s Chief Crime Prevention Officer (remember them?) before acceptance. Once accepted, we then would apply to the GPO (General Post Office) the forerunners to British Telecom for them to install a block terminal to the client’s telephone line for us to connect to. We used speech diallers to dial 999 and relay the message to the Police Control Room. “Being approved by one of the alarms inspectorates then became the ultimate criteria as to who could install police calling alarms. NSCIA became NACOSS then, finally NSI. The smaller Inspectorates like AISC all eventually merged into SSAIB and that is where we are today.” If you have been in any industry for 50 years you will have seen systems evolve right in front of your eyes and you’ll have fitted many of the developments as they came on board. So what innovations does Nigel consider to have had the biggest impact on the security industry?

“The biggest technology advances over the last 50 years have been wireless technology and GSM entry phones,” he says. “All of the tricks of the trade we learned over the years in concealing alarm cables are no longer needed. No longer do we have to go in and ‘first fix’ our cables in new build properties only to return to complete the installation and find that another contractor has damaged our cables. With wireless alarms we can be the last contractor on site. “With GSM technology, we can now install video entry phone systems in a block of 100 apartments in one day without needing to enter any of the residences. This feature has been an enormous boon during the Coronavirus lockdown.” It’s not just been the technology that’s changed over the years, the customer has also become more-tech savvy, and in some cases more demanding, so how does Nigel think the expectations of customers has changed with time? “Customers are now much more eager to embrace advances in technology,” says Nigel. “A good proportion of clients now ask if the alarm

system we propose to fit can be used with an app. Those clients who go for a CCTV system insist that they can view camera images remotely. “High end domestic clients are increasingly asking about remote monitoring of their site by an RVRC (Remote Video Receiving Centre) where, when camera activations are detected, the images are viewed by the RVRC and audio warnings can be issued on site. They say it’s like having a 24-hour security guard on site for a fraction of the cost.” Anyone who has spent a good number of years in the same market will have seen changes, especially in a sector that didn’t really exist when they started in the business. But with 50 years under his belt, is there anything Nigel of today would tell the Nigel of 50 years ago? “I wish that I had had the knowledge then that I have now 50 years on,” he says. “If only I had offered to manage The Beatles before Brian Epstein did. After all, I was in the right place at the right time!” Which would have resulted in Nigel not going into the security business at all!

CLOUD

All together now Alarm installations can involve technologies from multiple vendors so how can you simplify how the data from these systems is managed? We catch up with Chris Carter-Brennan, Founder and CEO at Conxtd, about the benefits of Cloud based management systems hen WebwayOne was sold to CSL Dualcom in June 2018, Chris CarterBrennan and his team started building Conxtd, a cloud-based automation and business intelligence system for installers and ARCs. The initial handover period with CSL has come to an end so he is now working full time on the new platform. PSI caught up to him to talk about the technology and the role Cloud has to play in the security industry in helping to simplify alarms and bring multiple vendor systems together.

W

Chris Carter-Brennan of Conxtd

“Security is a very real time thing - you can't be analysing the information days and days later and then questioning the data, Cloud allows you to do work in real time” 36

What is a Cloud-based alarm management system and what does it do? This is probably best explained with a customer example. We worked with one of JCI's large retail clients (with about 600 UK sites) who were trying to provide reports on data like open/close, which sounds simple, but is actually very complex. This type of retailer has High Street stores, out of town stores, plus remote stock rooms, with each of those store types having different operating profiles for being open and closed, different times and scenarios going on. Therefore it's actually a very challenging task to produce what initially sounds like a simple "did it open/close on time?" kind of report, especially when you throw in Bank Holidays and unexpected events like Covid. So that's what Conxtd does, we build reports and dashboards and tools like that which the ARC and the installer can resell to their clients and produce all those reports automatically. This particular retail customer is receiving several hundred emails a day which need to be sorted and undergo manual analysis of that data into spreadsheets for the customer to then try and disseminate that to their team. You can imagine the nightmares going on inside that retailer with all of the adds, moves, personnel changes etc so it meant that the data just wasn't getting processed fast enough. The installer was able to offer Conxtd to the client and they now use it for their loss prevention team to receive reports automatically and in real-time. And because we

are utilising the Cloud, we can deliver these reports automatically from one to hundreds or even thousands of sites. And so that's the benefit of using the Cloud here, people can get information on their phones wherever they are? Yes, it will just take all the time-consuming effort out of the process. As we know, security is a very real time thing - you can't be analysing the information days and days later and then questioning the data, Cloud allows you to do work in real time and allows you to collaborate in a much better way. How difficult is it for installers to set this type of system up? There are two aspects to consider. Firstly there's no software to download, it's all through the browser on your laptop/PC or you can download the app onto your phone just like you would any other app. Obviously there is a set up and authorisation phase so we can't consume the data without the right Terms and Conditions being signed off and authority being given to enable us to bring the data into our platform following GDPR. After that we can talk to the installer and their end user to find out how they would like the system to be setup. For example you can group the sites in certain ways and have different levels of users, you can also upload custom data because some retailers will name their sites or reference them in a specific way and the ARC will give a chip number, so all of that information can go into the system. Once we're through that phase, the system is up and running. We do a lot of that customisation phase in collaboration with the installer and the end user to make it ideal for the whole supply chain. You recently announced a partnership with Tether. What does that involve? Tether Technologies is one of our video surveillance as a service (VSaaS) partners, along with Eagle Eye and Videoloft. Essentially, if an installer is reselling VSaaS then the

www.psimagazine.co.uk

EDIT Interview psi jul21_PSI_mar15 28/06/2021 14:30 Page 2

customer and installer have a login to that system online and they can ingest all the video and store it in the Cloud and get all sorts of benefits from that solution. What the installer can then do is come on to Conxtd and after subscribing, set up a site and in the Cloud we can connect our platform to the Tether platform. So what that means is, if the installer is out there and he's reselling an alarm connection, we will bring the alarms into our platform and when we get those alarms, we can apply logic to them. In other words let's say we receive an intruder alarm that will trigger some logic in our system, which will talk to the Tether platform and show any motion detection video, all in the one solution for visual verification. The real benefit there is on-site the installer the engineer just needs to fit the VSaaS and fit the signalling device, there is no special wiring on site, or any special software required, just follow the manufacturer's instructions and then we bind all that data together in the Cloud and the work is done. This means that the end user, the installer and the ARC can have one app; one piece of software that brings all of the application into one unified place so that you don't need to have two apps running two different processes. How much of a driving force behind Cloud technology is the use of smartphones? We see Cloud adoption in the security industry in two phases. If you look at the first phase, which is where we are now, you've got manufacturers that used to make intruder panels and keypads now building an app to go with those products. They resell those products

www.psimagazine.co.uk

through distribution and installers and then the ARC monitors them. This means that there are four kinds of people involved in that supply chain; the manufacturer, the ARC, the installer and the end user. The current apps that are out there on the market are, based around those manufacturers, so we would describe them as being vertical - they're great for the end user and they're good for the installer, because they help them manage that particular piece of hardware. The second phase of this is for platforms, like ours to be a horizontal solution aimed at installers and ARCs who want to manage multiple vendors and bring that traffic all together. We all know that a manufacturer can build a panel and a PIR camera etc and that will be fantastic for certain situations, but in other situations which could be a warehouse, SME or a small manufacturing plant there will be a need for the alarm panel, but they might also want a VSaaS provider separately and that's where we step in and, along with the panels and comms, also allow services like VSaaS and smart locks to all be managed in one place. The main benefit of this is for monitored and non-monitored systems in that ARCs can sell a software solution in addition to a monitoring solution for those aspects that are self-managed by the installer and end user. The main driver for Cloud is currently user experience while the second driver is going to be all about the system infrastructure being in the cloud and helping people to manage multiple vendor products.

“The end user, the installer and the ARC can have one app; one piece of software that brings all of the application into one unified place so that you don't need to have two apps running two different processes” 37

TRAINING

Learning in lockdown While schools have been able to teach in person during the lockdown period, technology training sessions for installers have been considerably affected. We talk to one provider to discuss the impact of the last twelve months on the delivery of technology training or any manufacturer of security systems, training is a key part of its support programme to help enable installers to get the most out of its technology, ultimately for the benefit of their customers. The restrictions of lockdown have meant that face-to-face and hands-on training have had to be replaced with virtual learning and while we have now become familiar with this scenario it has meant a change in the way that content has been delivered. PSI spoke to Steve Woodbridge (pictured right), Global Training Manager at Paxton, to find out how the company has managed courses during the pandemic and how it has led to a new way of thinking about support.

F

Adapting training One of the interesting plot twists in talking to Steve about training during a pandemic is that in 2020 Paxton developed a number of systems to enable companies to work and operate during the Covid restrictions, and yet those same restrictions impacted the technology training courses to familiarise installers with the systems. Fortunately the team was able to quickly develop a training delivery programme to suit. “At the beginning of 2020, before the start of the pandemic, our trainers had a busy schedule of practical training sessions available globally,” recalls Steve. “Once restrictions were put in place, we quickly adapted our training offering, developing further options to provide our installers and customers with the best possible support. “The access control and video management systems we manufacture are well placed to help during the pandemic and assist in the safe return to the office and public spaces for Paxton system users. Providing flexible learning opportunities for our installers, and training them on how to employ these features, has been vital to enable them to assist their customers and businesses through this difficult time. “To make this as simple as possible, we designed a virtual training programme which has been well attended week on week since the

www.psimagazine.co.uk

first UK lockdown. We have also started to produce more on-demand content for the Paxton Learning Portal. This is so installers can get the latest product updates and installation information in their spare time, at their convenience.”

Hands-on As an installer you will know that nothing can compare to getting hands-on experience with products in order to learn every nuance of the kit and to be able to deal with any situation that might arise during the contract. For training providers this has proven a headache to deal with, but the advances in e-learning have enabled engagement with students. “Over the last year we have learnt a lot about how to offer a more a hands-on experience in a virtual learning environment,” reveals Steve. “Our training has always focused on providing practical learning using our products, and nothing could replace that hands-on experience of the systems. So, replicating in-person training in a digital world has been the focus of our training team, as we found that sessions which are involved and socially engaging help to facilitate learning.

“Providing flexible learning opportunities for our installers, and training them on how to employ these features, has been vital to enable them to assist their customers and businesses through this difficult time”

TRAINING

(continued from previous page)

“Additionally, we have just updated Paxton10 to include multi-site functionality. This means that system administrators can manage multiple sites from one server remotely, anytime, from anywhere in the world. This has gone down very well in our training programmes and has been a highly anticipated since the system launched in 2019, with installer feedback helping to drive its creation. “All of the new system abilities have been incorporated within all our training courses, along with other considerations to help companies understand how our products can be used to help maintain the safety of their staff and visitors.”

The constant changes in the government restrictions and an increased demand on an installer’s time, means it has been vital to provide training in several different mediums “Ensuring that these sessions are more than a webinar-style download of information helped us to achieve this. The groups are kept small to ensure social participation, and installers get given digestible information where they are encouraged to interact with the product. An example of this, is the ability to remotely access our Paxton10 system during the workshops to experience the software first-hand and be guided by an expert in a virtual class of likeminded individuals.

Training trends Using access control to help provide Covidsecure workspaces has been one of the most obvious requirements in 2020. For this reason, Paxton installers and end-users have been very interested in learning and implementing the Net2 system updates, including thermal scanning upon entry via integrations with third party hardware, Checkpoint Control, and Occupancy Management. Combined, these features help minimise the risk of infection by managing the flow of movement around a building, as well as limiting how many people can be in a designated area at any one time. The biggest trend, however, is the use of Bluetooth credentials for access control. People now expect to use an app for almost everything and that includes using their smart devices to gain access to a secured building. “Paxton10 provides smart credentials free of charge, making the system highly scalable as there is no limit to the number of smart credentials on a system, and ideal for buildings with people coming and going as they can be issued via email in advance,” says Steve. 40

The future In the UK, Paxton aims to continue virtual training for the foreseeable future as installers have shown that they appreciate the availability and convenience of learning this way. Feedback has been encouraging and the extended period has taught Steve that as a tool, virtual training can be incredibly powerful: “It has enabled many customers to quickly understand and implement COVID-secure updates to our systems, as well as helped installers to secure and manage buildings all over the UK, during somewhat unpredictable times,” he says. “Alongside resuming our in-person training and continuing virtual workshops, we continue to support installers with eLearning that can be accessed on demand. The Paxton Learning Portal provides bitesize modules that installers can access whenever they like. There is new material being added to the catalogue regularly and we have recently migrated the Paxton Learning Portal to a new platform, providing a more intuitive user experience with more resources than ever before.” The constant changes in the government restrictions and an increased demand on an installer’s time, means it has been vital to be able to provide training in several different mediums, and be able to adapt quickly to an ever-evolving situation. Steve believes it is imperative to maintain the consistency of information and quality of delivery across all the different methods of training, irrespective of what is going on in the world: “We have a duty to our customers and providing greater flexibility and maintaining consistency for them is what I have learnt and will take from the time moving forward.”

SKILLS

Filling the skills gap David Scott, Managing Director of Skills for Security looks at how the industry is addressing the skills shortage in the sector

E

ngagement in the Skills for Security technical fire and security apprenticeship is increasing, with 2000 apprentices enrolled at a number of centres across the UK, which is great news for those of us committed in securing the industry’s continued future growth. However, as positive that this figure is we urgently need more to fill the gap. Suppose we compare ourselves like for like with a similar sector, such as electrical installation for a moment - this sector currently employs 300,000 skilled people, of which 5% are apprentices. In comparison, the fire and security sector employs 100,000 skilled people of which only 2% are apprentices. Based on these figures there is still considerable improvements to be made; although 5,000 apprentices would be in line with the electrical sector, in order to eradicate our skills-shortage we need 10,000 apprentices enrolled on programmes throughout the UK. These figures raise the question why are there fewer apprentices? This is down to several factors, which the sector is hard at work ensuring no longer remain a barrier to joining the industry: Not every employer is aware there is an apprenticeship for fire and security professionals: the only way to professionalize the sector is through competency-based learning such as an apprenticeship. If we ever want to be respected in the same way that electricians and other trades are, the sector needs to get behind the recruitment and enrollment of apprentices. I do believe we are starting to see this with the increase in numbers over the last few years. National Electrco-technical Training NET, which govern the End Point Assessment for the fire and security apprenticeship, are doing good work in professionalising the sector through a robust testing system. The work that NET and the ECS are doing with experienced workers will be

“If we ever want to be respected in the same way that electricians and other trades are, the sector needs to get behind the recruitment and enrollment of apprentices” another step in this direction, where you can only achieve a gold ECS card by proving competency in the sector ( visit ecscard.org.uk). Apprenticeship training is not accessible: for as long as I can remember, there have been barriers to education. If you have a barrier to learning, please reach out to us on info@skillsforsecurity.org.uk, where we can discuss different delivery models to help make recruiting an apprentice easier. Skills for Security's goal is to make training more accessible and in the last 18 months have opened four centres to help remove those barriers in Warrington, Birmingham, Oxford and Southport. We have many more in the pipeline for 2021 and 2022.

Where will the WSUK final be held this year and when? The WSUK final is to be held in Skills for Security headquarters in Warrington due to its accessibility to the North (Scotland) and the South (London), plus airport access for those coming from Northern Ireland. We are trying our best to align it with WSUK as much as possible, and it is likely it will take place on the week ending the 19th of November. There will be eight participants competing in security and four in fire. This year's competition will be judged by NSI, SSAIB and Skills for Security staff. Communication to the successful apprentices from round one will be sent out in the coming weeks.

Recruiting new apprentices for your business proves difficult/Not enough young people are aware of the fire and security sector as a career of choice: this question is commonly raised to me at events up and down the country; how do we attract talent to a sector that is in its infancy and is unknown to school and college leavers? Skills for Security is working on two initiatives; the first is WSUK, a national trade competition that is normally held at the NEC in Birmingham in November. Over 70,000 school leavers attend this event over four days looking for career information, advice and guidance. We run the

first-ever security competition at this event, where the security sector is seen as a reputable career in comparison to those in electrical, joinery, army and the NHS. We use this opportunity to promote the security sector as a career of choice. The second initiative is with Zitko Talent, of which Skills for Security is a founding member. The Zitko Talent Programme provides fast-track entry into the security tech industry and is a coalition of employers, manufacturers, accredited tech trainers and professional bodies. Once the right candidates have been identified, the programme provides an intensive 12-month conversion programme that enables those with past skills and experience to become fire and security engineers. It combines structured, salaried work experience with close to 300 hours of technical and product training. We have found the Zitko Talent trainees taking part in our programmes to be of excellent calibre, and as the programme builds, Zitko are looking to support our work in the schools and colleges, with their own attraction programme at graduate and adult level. I am personally excited to see how this adapts over the years. ADPRO Swansway Group Perimeter Protection With 24 branches located throughout the north of England and Wales, Swansway Group is one of the region’s leading motor companies. The company is a main dealer for a range of premium automotive brands including Audi, Volkswagen, Land Rover and Jaguar, and also operates two state-of-the-art accident repair centres. High-value stock inventories across all sites require 24/7 protection, and security is a vital priority. The client was looking for a cost-effective solution for its new vehicle storage facility in Crewe that would combine all surveillance data into a single system giving immediate action upon activation Following consultation with the client, the decision was taken to install the ADPRO FastTrace 2E Remotely Managed Multiservice Gateway (RMG), a Perimeter, Multi-site and Enterprise Security Solution by Honeywell/ADPRO. Installed by NU Fire & Security Ltd, the system delivers state-of-the-art remote monitoring, enabling security threats to be detected and assessed instantly and efficiently. When an intruder is identified, a high quality Quad image is transmitted within seconds in a time stamped data packet, displaying to a remote monitoring centre or mobile handset, allowing operators to see exactly what is happening and take appropriate action. The system uses infrared (IR) IP network High Definition low-light cameras which allows lowlight working and is backed by an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) backup. The ADPRO solution can also operate via 3G connection, which will allow for redundancy should the ADSL lines fail. Use the QR code for the full case study

Confirmation of H.265 licenses used in advanced IDIS video solutions As video users globally pay closer attention to the manufacturing origins and standards-compliance of their systems, IDIS is highlighting the value of its fully licensed network cameras and recorders that feature H.265 video compression. IDIS was among the first manufacturers to deliver the benefits of H.265 compression to the market as part of its end-to-end DirectIP® solution. The company has confirmed that it has HVEC Advance and H.265 MPEG patent licenses for all its hardware, with licenses dating back to cover all installed systems. IDIS has made extensive use of the H.265 standard since 2016, leveraging it to underpin flexible monitoring solutions using dual codec (H.264/265) and hybrid codec to ensure backward compatibility with older monitoring hardware. Combined with IDIS’s own advanced compression technology, IDIS Intelligent Codec, this typically saves up to 70% on storage capacity and lowers bandwidth requirements compared to older high-definition systems that relied on H.264. This approach means IDIS users were among the first to benefit from ultra-high-definition surveillance using 8MP and 12MP cameras, while ensuring fast incident response, smoother searches and minimized distortion when reviewing complex scenes, even from mobile devices. For example, the new IDIS Mobile Plus app – which integrates with the enterprise-level IDIS Solution Suite VMS to allow for more flexible and remote surveillance operations – enables 4K live streaming on remote mobile devices, with high image quality in H.264/MJPEG and H.265 formats. With Mobile Plus, users can remotely access cameras and NVRs, monitor live video streams, and search recorded footage via their iPhone, iPad, Android phone or tablet – all enabled by advanced compression technologies. An intruder alarm system is only as good as the sum of all of its parts, which is why the choice you make when specifying PIRs and sensors for an installation makes all the difference The performance of detectors, the reliability of wireless functionality and the development of smartphone apps have helped improve the performance of intruder systems and also made installing the technology even easier. For example, commissioning the original panel, PIRs, sounders etc is much easier with a wireless system but when the panel needs a few extra detectors or peripherals added at a later date is when wireless wins hands down in terms of speed of install and simplicity. In terms of detectors it is vital for the efficiency of the whole system that the best products are used. Recently reviewed in PSI magazine with an impressive 9/10 rating, the Capture range from Texecom comes with EN Grade 2 wired or wireless connectivity, wall or ceiling mounting, and a choice of detection technologies including dual element, quad element or dual technology sensing for a variety of security environments. Integriti update includes biometrics and real time location tracking Access control and security system designer and manufacturer Inner Range has released the Version 21 update for its Enterprise-level system Integriti, which includes integrations with Suprema biometrics and Quuppa real time location tracking. The new integration with Suprema allows users to add thumb and face scans as access credentials, which can be used in addition to smartcards and PIN for high security with trouble-free access. The integration with Quuppa means tagged information from the Quuppa system can be associated with Integriti entities, allowing direct control of the asset from either system. The asset could be an object, or a user associated with it. The location of tagged assets can be made visible on Integriti’s schematic of the site, alongside all other access and security devices. Operators can access all cameras with the asset in their field of view, if fields of view are configured. Alert protocols can be set up with bespoke criteria and operators can track and view the asset instantly if an alert is triggered. Visit: www.innerrange.co.uk

TRIED & TESTED

TRIED & TESTED Here is an overview of some of the products we have featured in PSI independent test reports. This month we highlight a range of systems listed in no particular order. As always, manufacturers and distributors have no input in the test reports or results Western Digital – Purple 18TB HDD The Purple range of hard drives is designed for surveillance applications with a variety of capacities from 1TB up to 18TB. They are designed for 24-hour, all-yearround operation with an emphasis on continuous write-cycle time. The drive is said to support up to 64 HD cameras and is optimised for AI based read / write requirements with an additional 32 AI streams. Review: A very high-capacity drive with fast read & write access and multiple features to improve the storage and robustness of multi-camera surveillance recordings, especially where complex analytics and Deep Learning are utilised.

Ajax – Wireless Alarm System The Ajax alarm system is a wireless based EN50131 Grade 2 range of components that can be mixed and matched to suit a variety of home and office environments. Components are available in white or black finish to suit the décor of the site. Smartphone setup, management and monitoring along with extended battery life mean that the system is easy to install and use. Review: A wide range of detectors and simple set-up process makes for a potentially very quick installation. Good access to diagnostic information for monitoring purposes coupled with relatively straightforward battery changing.

Optex – BXS-AM Detector This is a wall or pole mountable IP55 outdoor “curtain” PIR intrusion detector that has dual narrow passive infrared detection zones either side of the device. Intended for example to cover side walls of buildings in order to trigger an alarm when people approach too close to the property. These side zones have a range of up to 12 metres, giving a coverage of up to 24 metres in total. Review: A very straightforward alarm device with clear operation and simple set-up. Apart from the reservations regarding cable entry and security of access the unit performs well and should prove easy to install.

Raytec – VAR2-IPPOE-HY8-1 This illuminator is a hybrid design providing both Infrared and White light illumination from one network controlled device. The Infrared wavelength is centred on 850nm and a 940nm version is available on request. Power is by 4-Pair PoE or optionally through a separate 24v DC supply. Review: The white light allowed extremely good colour reproduction and did not excessively flare on near objects even at the 100% output level. Similarly, the infrared had good even illumination over distance and allowed a good contrast range for subjects. Extremely versatile.

Texecom – Capture Capture motion detectors are intended for use in a wide variety of professional security applications. With a choice of EN Grade 2 wired or wireless connectivity, wall or ceiling mounting, and a choice of detection technologies including dual element, quad element or dual technology sensing, Capture suits a wide variety of security environments. Review: The ease of connection with a range of switchable, built-in EOL resistor values simplifies the installation process. The potential for device branding will likely be appealing to independent installers.

Union – DoorSense DoorSense from Union, part of Assa Abloy Security Solutions is a legal way for fire doors to be kept open for access and be able to close automatically in the event of an alarm. The battery-operated system is CE marked to EN 1155 standards. Review: The DoorSense does exactly what it should do and even though it looks like it weighs a ton it is actually extremely light for a motorised unit and therefore does not affect the effort required in everyday use of the door.

Camect – NVR The Camect NVR is a Smart Network Video Recorder using AI routines to identify specific subjects within the scene and to prevent false alarms. This model is primarily aimed at mid to high-end residential and small commercial properties Review: A very interesting, small intelligent recording device that does not rely on “Cloud” analysis or storage and with ease of installation and management.

Satel – Slimline PIRs Satel produces a variety of PIR detectors within the Slimline range; the models tested and reported here are the Grade 2 “Slim-PIR-Luna” and the Grade 3 “Slim-Dual-Pro” models. The Luna version includes white-light illuminators, while this Pro version provides dual technology detection and anti-masking protection to EN 50131-2-4 if correctly configured. Review: A very good pair of detectors with the Luna model fulfilling an additional lighting role and the Dual Pro meeting the Grade 3 requirements and having good detection flexibility.

Seagate – SkyHawk ST14000VX0008 The 14TB SkyHawk is a conventionally packaged 3.5” hard drive with SATA connection. It is promoted as a surveillance optimised drive with “superior image integrity”. Multi-Tier Caching allows for up to 64 HD video streams to be handled. Review: A very fast and efficient hard drive with an impressive specification, vast storage and manufacturer support for data recovery if required. The attention to the specific current and developing requirements of the surveillance industry should ensure that this drive provides the required performance and longevity of service.

CCTV protects electric vehicle charging bay locations Motor Fuel Group (MFG) is using Wisenet cameras manufactured by Hanwha Techwin to help protect its investment in electric vehicle charging hubs. With the sales of electric vehicles growing, MFG is accelerating its plans to offer ultra-rapid, electric vehicle (EV) charging bays – up to twelve charging bays at each location - across its 900+ station network. Wisenet video surveillance systems are being installed to deter and detect vandals enabling MFG personnel to identify if any charging equipment has been damaged. The contract to install the systems was awarded to Age CCTV, a division of Age Electrical Services. “We have been installing new video surveillance solutions and upgrading existing systems at MFG forecourts for over 15 years. In all cases, we have used Wisenet cameras in line with MFG’s decision to single source cameras and recording devices from Hanwha Techwin,” said Jason Gargiulo, Managing Director of Age CCTV. Depending on the number of charging bays at

Complete bespoke system for medium secure unit

Abloy UK has partnered with Grantfen to supply a new security system to Mersey Care Foundation Trust’s new medium secure unit, Rowan View. The purpose-built NHS facility consists of 123 beds over eight wards. To provide convenience and safety to all guests, visitors and staff, the development required a security solution that encompassed CCTV, video intercom and access control. The Trust also wanted to ensure the integrity of the doors were maintained in restricted areas of the building. This would not be effectively provided with a purely mechanical key system, which would lack traceability and create issues if keys were lost or misplaced. Such a scenario could also lead to key duplicates, making it harder to limit access, and potentially lead to escalating costs if the entire suite of keys needed to be replaced. To provide a complete security solution for

54

each location, Age CCTV has installed one or more 5-megapixel Wisenet QNO-8080R bullet cameras. The QNO-8080R is a true day/night camera, equipped with built-in IR illuminators which enable it to capture images regardless of the lighting conditions. It also benefits from enhanced Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) which performs at up to 120dB to produce images from scenes containing a challenging mix of bright and dark areas which normally results in overexposed or underexposed images. With many MFG (EV) charging sites being unmanned, authorised MFG personnel are able at any time to remotely access the live images captured by the H.265 Wisenet QNO-8080R cameras or retrieve the recorded video of any incidents. They can do so from a desktop PC or laptop by using management software or via their smartphones or tablets using a mobile app. The images are transmitted over 4G technology and bandwidth efficiency is improved by up to 75% compared to current H.264 technology when WiseStream II is combined with H.265 compression. Rowan View, Abloy UK and Grantfen worked to create a bespoke, unified system. The CCTV was designed on the Genetec platform, allowing for the right camera selection for each individual application incorporating cameras from Axis, Bosch, Hanwha and Oncam. To supplement this, Abloy UK provided CLIQ technology to create an access control and key management solution. CLIQ combines digital and mechanical technology, delivering the benefits of physical security and full digital management. It also helps to increase individual accountability, as keys are programmed to provide permission based on approved levels of access. This in turn creates a traceable system, allowing Rowan View to see who used which key and when. Any lost or misplaced keys can be deleted from the system, eliminating the risk of unauthorised access or escalating replacement costs. The system can be expanded as required and software upgrades are included.

Goffert Stadium replaces legacy security system The Goffert Stadium, home to N.E.C. football club in Nijmegen, Netherlands, was in dire need of an upgrade as its legacy security system had fallen into disrepair and was no longer fit for purpose. To tackle the issue, the football club worked with VideoGuard to deploy a Genetec system that could modernise security operations and support a phased evolution of infrastructure. The Goffert stadium’s original analogue security system had been installed during a renovation in 2000. It had initially served the security team well but over the years it had to failed to evolve in line with the new requirements of the organisations. Upgrading its capabilities was complex and costly, while almost half of the CCTV cameras had become inoperable. Theo van Benthum, Goffert Stadium Manager, explains: “The images from the old cameras could no longer be used as legal evidence. And that’s important if you really want to be able to tackle hooligans. In addition, there is also an economic reason to have good CCTV surveillance. The mayor of Nijmegen demands from us that we have a good security organisation and camera surveillance is an integral part of that. In matches with an increased risk of disturbances, the police come to us to watch and if they think that the camera footage cannot be used, this could have consequences for us. For example, we have to allow fewer visitors or certain competitions may no longer take place. The KNVB (Royal Dutch Football Association) can also come with sanctions if we are imposed by the municipality.” Replacing the entire system became the only option. However, committing the budget required to fund all of the necessary upgrades in one go would be difficult. Van Benthum was also keen to ensure that whatever system was adopted had the flexibility to evolve in line with future needs. Richard Nass, the Owner and Managing Director of VideoGuard, stepped in to assist the club, proposing a complete refit based around

on Genetec Security Center. As an open platform that supports a range of cameras, this provided a path for the club to take a phased approach to refreshing his hardware. Helping to lower up-front costs without limiting options for future upgrades. Theo van Benthum, acknowledges that a project of this scale simply wouldn’t have been feasible without the input of VideoGuard and Genetec. “It wasn’t just about replacing the 24 cameras. The existing network could also no longer be used. Everything was outdated and weathered. I knew Richard Nass from the past and knew he was in the camera business, so I thought I’d give him a call. This is how the idea arose to turn our stadium into a showroom. He came up with a proposal that we could handle just fine. Now, but also in the future”. In 2018, the project began by replacing the dilapidated analogue cameras with Type 5000i Bosch Autodomes, which improved the quality and accuracy of footage. The cameras were then connected via a new network with two Genetec Streamvault-SV-2000 servers and run on Genetec Security Center. Surveillance camera coverage was also considerably expanded in other areas, such as the fan entrances and car park, to ensure better visibility across the stadium in high footfall areas. The interior cameras were previously run on a separate system, but now, using Genetec Security Center, staff can access every camera on premises via a single platform, providing a more holistic view into security operations. Furthermore, Security Center also enables personnel to monitor surveillance via their phone or tablets, enabling a greater degree of flexibility, as security personnel are no longer required to be constantly posted at a monitoring station. Speaking about the refit, Frank Scholten, Product Manager and Engineer at VideoGuard, said: “What has improved enormously is the ease of use. For example, it is very easy to select cameras based on a map. In addition, the system can be expanded quickly and easily if necessary”. The new security system proved its worth when hooligans associated with ADO Den Haag attempted to burn down the N.E.C. training centre. Thankfully, the new cameras were able to clearly capture the scene, serving as vital evidence for the police, leading to the successful arrests of both of the suspects. As Security Center is an open platform, it means the club isn’t restricted to specific hardware and can integrate whichever tools best suit their needs.
