H Bolton NHS Foundation Trust With the highest ED attendance rates in Greater Manchester, Bolton NHS Foundation Trust has seen relentless demand and strain on its healthcare services. To tackle issues created by congestion within the ED, BFT built and implemented a new dedicated unit in February, the Clinical Assessment Unit. The CAU was launched with maximum capacity of 19 patients, operating seven days a week from 10am to 10pm, but is specifically designed for higher volume of patients with the primary goal to function as a single stream for acute medicine admissions.
H Community Health Partnerships Modular build company Portakabin is set to deliver the UK’s first Passivhaus-certified modular healthcare centre for Community Health Partnerships. Believed to be the UK’s greenest healthcare modular building, the Foleshill Health Centre in Coventry is on track to take just nine months from contract award to completion in Summer 2021 and will be a major milestone for volumetric modular construction.
H NHS Lanarkshire An exciting design concept has been revealed for the state-of the-art new University Hospital Monklands, located just 14 miles from where the UN COP26 conference was held. When completed, the new NHS Lanarkshire hospital will be the first in Scotland to be designed from the outset to be fully net zero for both the build and operation phases, meaning it will not contribute to carbon emissions. It is due to open in 2028.
H NHS Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust for the New Heatherwood Hospital In a build that was considered essential works and allowed to continue through lockdown, and despite flooding difficulties during construction, the new Heatherwood hospital will be a flagship facility for Frimley Health, with the potential to double patient activity at over the next 10 years, offering specialist renal, cystic fibrosis, hyper-acute stroke, vascular and spinal services across a wider network.
H Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals A state-of-the-art theatre ‘hub’ dedicated to cataract surgery opened its doors to patients in July as part of a Newcastle Hospitals initiative. Newcastle Westgate Cataract Centre – a three-theatre, purpose built clinical facility – will perform up to 1,000 cataract procedures a month, which is almost double the number undertaken before the coronavirus pandemic. Each patient will spend between just 40 minutes to an hour in the unit rather than the usual time of about three hours.
H North Cumbria Integrated Care Following two years’ work with an investment of £35 million in north Cumbria to improve health outcomes for the local population, the Northern Centre for Cancer Care on teh site of the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle brings all non-surgical cancer services under the same roof for the first time. Around 2,000 patients are already set to receive treatment or follow-up care at the new centre with approximately 1,200 new referrals each year.
