MP Vis Responds to Changes to Canadian Passport
Brad Vis, Member of Parliament for Mission–Matsqui–Fraser Canyon, responded to the unveiling of a new Canadian passport design that leaves out major moments in Canadian history.
“This is another example of this Liberal government being completely out of touch with the average Canadian,” said MP Vis. “Canadians are proud to carry passports internationally that honour national heroes like Terry Fox and our Veterans who fought in the First World War. The removal of a Canadian icon and hero like Terry Fox, who is fondly remembered and honoured by all Canadians for his extraordinary courage in his battle with cancer, is wrong. Canada has a proud history of bravery and courage, which should be highlighted in our passport. Why doesn’t Justin Trudeau believe Terry Fox deserves to be honoured in this way?”
“The new passport design was very clearly designed with little to no input from ordinary Canadians who are proud of figures like Terry Fox and Nellie McClung who famously fought for women’s right to vote. Further, it removes imagery of iconic landmarks, like the Vimy monument in France, built as a tribute to the Canadian troops who stormed the ridge and turned the tide of the First World War.”
“I call on the Liberal government to go back to the drawing board and restore Terry Fox and other important Canadians and landmarks to the passport.”
Achieving Excellence Through Dedication: Manraj Singh Brar’s Inspiring Journey
Manraj Singh Brar achieved the top position in his final matriculation examination at D.A.V. School, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Punjab, scoring an impressive 96.4% marks. He credits his success to the guidance and support of his school teachers and parents, whose joint efforts enabled him to achieve this remarkable position. His grandmother, a retired teacher, described him as a self-motivated and hardworking individual who efficiently manages his time between studying, participating in sports, volunteering, and spending time with his family.
To celebrate this special achievement, Manraj spent the day with visually impaired children and elderly individuals, bringing happiness to their lives. He has always been keen on assisting academically challenged children in his neighborhood to improve their academic performance. His dream is to organize his efforts on a larger scale by volunteering to help visually and financially disadvantaged children improve their academic scores. Additionally, he plans to create a social media page to gather charitable donations for abandoned elderly parents, aiming to improve their quality of life.
Manraj’s parents, Paramjit and Upinder, both college teachers, stated that he effectively utilizes technology in his studies without getting distracted. He leverages resources like Google and YouTube to gain a fundamental understanding of his subjects and then verifies the information with his teachers.
During a small gathering at his school, the school principal, Mrs. Versha, extended her congratulations to Manraj and his family. She expressed her best wishes for his future endeavors, hoping that he continues to pursue his goals and positively impact the field of education.
The benefits of the grass beneath our feet
(NC) While many of us enjoy the esthetic beauty of a well-maintained lawn, sports field or golf fairway, they may not realize that there are environmental benefits of turfgrass. Next time you’re playing a game of soccer, strolling through the golf course or taking in the smell of freshly cut grass in your neighbourhood, think about the power of healthy grass, which includes:
Reducing the speed and force of flowing water runoff
Preventing erosion by forming fibrous root systems
Serving as a barrier to fire damage
Reducing injuries on sports fields
Reducing pollen production by preventing the growth of weeds and helps keep allergies in check
Has a cooling effect that lowers air temperature around turfgrass
Releasing oxygen (e.g. a 15 metre x 15 metre lawn produces enough air to support four people for a year)
Sequestering carbon (e.g. a hectare of golf course turf is capable of sequestering one tonne of carbon into the soil per year for 30 years).

Safe Surrey Coalition Councilor Doug Elford Condemns Mayor Brenda Locke’s Flip-Flopping and Demands Transparency on Policing Issue
In a stunning display of inconsistency and lack of transparency, Mayor Brenda Locke of the City of Surrey has once again flip-flopped on the crucial policing issue, raising serious concerns about her leadership and integrity. Councilor Doug Elford is calling out the Mayor for her contradictory statements and demanding transparency by urging her to sign the Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) to provide the City staff with the full unredacted report.
During the Council meeting on May 1st, Mayor Locke publicly stated that the City staff would be conducting a thorough feasibility study based on the Provincial report, which recommends the Surrey Police Service (SPS) over the RCMP. She emphasized the need for the report to be provided to Council before making any further statements, stating, “I will not be making any further statements until such times that report is provided to us.” However, Mayor Locke has since contradicted herself by taking to the media to express discontent with the Provincial decision and consistently claiming her support for keeping the RCMP.
Councilor Elford expressed deep disappointment and concern over Mayor Locke’s inconsistent stance on this critical matter. He firmly stated, “It is extremely disheartening to witness the Mayor’s flip-flopping and lack of commitment to transparency. Her actions are not only undermining public trust but also jeopardizing the safety and well-being of our community.”
Adding to the growing list of questionable actions, on May 1st, Mayor Locke showcased redacted pages from the Provincial report to the media, attempting to shape the narrative in her favor. Then, on May 9th, during a Global BC news interview, she claimed that the City of Surrey had not received an unredacted report from the Province. However, it is imperative to note that the redacted sections of the report contain sensitive security information from both the RCMP and the SPS. The intention behind the redactions is to prevent this crucial information from falling into the wrong hands such as criminal organizations, potentially compromising public safety.
On May 11th, during an interview with OMNI News Mayor Locke went a step further by stating she will refuse to sign the NDA proposed by the Province, thereby denying City staff and Council access to the unredacted report, the very thing that Mayor Locke has opined for to the news media. Councilor Elford, demanding transparency and accountability emphasized the urgency of the situation. He firmly stated, “I call upon Mayor Locke to immediately sign the NonDisclosure Agreement and allow the City staff and Council to have the full unredacted report. Our staff must have access to all the relevant information to conduct a comprehensive and informed feasibility study.”
Councilor Elford, expressing his concerns about the mayor’s refusal to sign the NDA, questioned the mo-
tives behind her decision. He stated, “It raises legitimate questions in my mind: Why is Mayor Locke refusing to sign the Non-Disclosure Agreement? Is she afraid that once the councilors on her team read the unredacted report, they may reconsider their stance and support the Surrey Police Service? Transparency and open dialogue are essential in this process, and the mayor’s refusal to provide access to critical information is troubling.
Councilor Elford expressed concerns over the potential impact of Mayor Locke’s actions on the integrity of the feasibility study, which is crucial for making a sound decision on the future of policing in Surrey. He emphasized that the City staff are diligently working on the study, which is expected to take one to two months to complete. However, the Mayor’s contradictory statements and lack of transparency raise doubts about her commitment to an unbiased evaluation of the report.
Councilor Elford concluded, “The residents of Surrey deserve honesty, transparency, and sound decisionmaking. It is imperative that Mayor Locke stops playing politics and puts the best interests of our community first. We demand transparency and a commitment to the truth.”

Family and
The Patrika Auto Review: 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XLE AWDFamily Orientated Winner!
By Veeno DewanThe 2023 RAV4, is the models fifthgeneration redesign, and features edgier styling with cues from the Tacoma and 4Runner SUVs. There is a bolder, distinctive front end and a wonderful contrasting black roof along with black outlined wheel arches. Blue accented badges on the front-quarter panels and tailgate denote the hybrid model. The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid also has a redesigned interior design, with durable finishes, and A roomy, well thought out cabin. New for 2023, the RAV4 Hybrid is equipped with a standard 8.0-inch infotainment display using the latest version of Toyota Audio Multimedia. Higher trims upgrade to a 10.5-inch touchscreen.
The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is powered by a 2.5-liter I-4 paired with a CVT, (Continuously variable Transmission) while an electric motor located in the rear drives just the back wheels, giving the RAV4 Hybrid all-wheel drive capability. Combined output for the two systems is 219 hp with 206 lb-ft, 13 more horsepower and 22 more lb-ft of torque than the gas engine model. The RAV4 Hybrid starts off with the XLE AWD model at $35,350- and tops out at $44,650
for the fully loaded Limited AWD version.
Our XLE Hybrid tester came with the outdoorsy, mild off roading and
family campong focused Woodland option package ($2,190) that adds: Midnight Black Metallic paint, TRD-tuned double tube suspension, for better control, Coil springs are tuned for an off-road focus and bump stops maximize compressiondirection wheel travel along with standard with Falken Wildpeak tires for optimal off-roading. A raised black roof rack cross bars helps with hauling camping supplies, while a 120V inverter to power-up electrical items in campsites and remote Other additions on the Woodland edition include flow-formed 18-inch Bronze- coloured alloy wheels, Custom Woodland all-weather floor and cargo mats, Black badging, Black mud guards, and Dual black chrometipped exhaust, LED projector-beam headlights and integrated fog lights.
Interior wise, the RAV4 is comfortable and versatile with a nice hip point for easy entry, exit and wide doors. The RAV4 cabin offers plenty of room with a plethora of padded soft-touch surfaces where there are occupant contact points, and hard plastics in less obtrusive areas. The seats are amazingly comfortable and the ergonomics spot on in the front cabin. There is an unobstructed view of the road and the big touchscreen is in the middle of the dash where it is easily accessible. All the climate and audio controls are easy to use with big knobs and buttons that even gloved hands can use. The neat silver and black finish in the interior is also really nice.
In the back cabin, there is ample room for three adults at a squeeze, but it will be cramped for three six footers on long trips, however the seatbacks do recline and fold forward, adding some versatility for cargo-hauling. The RAV4 offers up 37 cubic feet of cargo-carrying ability behind the rear seats, and 57 cubic feet with the rear seats almost folded flat.
On the road, the additional electric motor powers the rear wheels in lowtraction situations, and the all-wheel drive system can direct up to 50 percent of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels if needed. But if the battery is depleted the RAV4 becomes a two- wheel drive SUV. When allwheel drive is not needed, the system disconnects to save fuel. The RAV4 Hybrid’s 219 horsepower is 16 hp
more than the non-hybrid model and gives it a little extra grunt, especially on acceleration where you can feel the electric motors instant torque. The RAV4 Hybrid has a couple of modes that can be used for different driving situations. ECO mode is probably the default for city driving, with a good mix of economy and performance, whilst Sport offers quicker acceleration and is good for highway merging, with smoother shifting and throttle responses. The RAV4 offers nice steering and handling qualities with no surprises. The AWD system is good for slippery surfaces and mild trails, but do not expect 4Runner type off- roading abilities. Fuel economy is rated at an impressive-City/Highway/Combined L/100km 5.7/6.3/6.0 thanks to Toyota’s excellent hybrid technology. The ride I have to say is exemplary, smooth, comfortable and car–like.
To sum up, the 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid offers excellent value for money. If you are looking for a spacious hybrid SUV that is fuel economical, comfortable, and cheap to run it will take a lot to beat the RAV4 Hybrid. It comes with Toyota’s reputation for reliability safety features and good resale. Amongst the segment leaders by far and highly recommended.
2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XLE AWD. Priced from $37,990. As tested with options, freight and PDI - $42,243.

People encouraged to prepare for floods, wildfire risks due to anticipated heat
With unseasonably hot weather forecast for most parts of British Columbia this weekend and into next week, people are encouraged to stay informed about potential risks.
Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a special weather statement for unseasonably hot weather, which is expected to begin Friday, May 12, 2023, and last until Tuesday, May 16 on the coast, and Wednesday, May 17 in the Interior. Widespread daily maximum tempera-
The forecast heat is expected to accelerate the snowmelt at higher elevations, which will increase pressure on the province’s rivers and streams. The River Forecast Centre is monitoring weather patterns and river conditions, and the River Forecast Centre website has updated flood warning and advisory notifications, including a map of areas of heightened flood risk.
The RFC is forecasting increasing flooding hazards in the B.C. Interior over the weekend and through next
What is Yoga Therapy?
Yoga therapy is the professional application of the principles and practices of yoga to promote health and well-being within a therapeutic relationship that includes personalized assessment, goal setting, lifestyle management, and yoga practices for individuals or small groups.
Aim- The goals of yoga therapy include eliminating, reducing, or managing symptoms that cause suffering; improving function; helping to prevent the occurrence or reoccurrence of underlying causes of illness; and moving toward improved health and wellbeing.
Practice- Yoga therapy adapts the practice of Yoga to the needs of people with specific or persistent health problems not usually addressed in general yoga class.
Yoga Therapy session is one to one and can continue within a small group of setting should this be suitable to the participants needs.
Benefit- Although all yoga is potentially therapeutic and healing, yoga therapy is the specific application of yogic tools—postures/exercises,
breathwork, meditation techniques, and more—to address an individual’s physical, mental, and emotional needs, and a disciplined lifestyle.
Results- It all depends on what you need to increase your health and wellbeing.
Many people first learn about yoga through its physical practices, but a common misconception is that it’s all about stretching or movement. In fact, yoga therapy can help people who can’t move at all, as well as active individuals!
The yogic model of health is unique because it addresses every aspect of life rather than considering each body part or system separately. Yoga therapy is a safe way of working with the natural capacity of your body and mind to optimize well-being.
A general public yoga class can certainly ease everyday aches, pains, and mood complaints. But a yoga therapy session, whether one-to-one or in a small group, goes much further because it is tailored to the individual.
ture records are likely to be broken. Expect temperatures 10 C to 15 C above what is normal for this time of year. The Interior daytime high temperatures will peak in the low to mid-30s, low to mid-30s in the Lower Mainland and Sea to Sky, and low 30s and high 20s on Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast.
People are encouraged to frequently monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada.
“While the warmer temperatures will be welcomed by many people who are looking to venture outdoors and explore our beautiful province, it does elevate some of our seasonal risks, such as floods, wildfires and heat,” said Bowinn Ma, B.C.’s Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness. “I urge people take full advantage of the beautiful weather ahead, but to stay informed about potential risks and take precautions to ensure your safety and well-being.”
Floods
week due to rapid snowmelt. Key areas of concern include the Fraser River from Prince George through the Fraser Canyon, Cariboo Mountains, North Thompson, South Thompson, Shuswap, Similkameen, Kootenay and Skeena regions.
People are advised to keep away from river edges and shorelines. During periods of high flow, riverbanks may be unstable and more prone to sudden collapse. Bodies of water also remain cool at this time of year and may pose a risk of hypothermia and cold-water shock to people when they are exposed to cold water for a prolonged time.
The Province is closely co-ordinating with communities affected by floods. Provincial assets, including sandbags, sandbag machines and temporary retaining walls have been deployed to communities at risk of potential flooding. Local governments and First Nations will have the most upto-date information available about where people can pick up sandbags.
(NC) If the rising cost of food has you thinking about growing some of your own vegetables this year, you are not alone. And a backyard vegetable garden comes with a number of benefits:
Eating fruits and vegetables is one of the most important things you can do to stay healthy.
Growing some vegetables at home can help make eating healthy easier.
Gardening boosts physical activity.
Gardening is a natural stress reliever.
Home gardeners, like farmers, sometimes have to manage threats from insects, weeds and diseases. Here are a few tips for warding off unwanted pests in your vegetable garden.
Tips to keep the pests away:
Plant companion flowers like mari golds and sunflowers that naturally
discourage bugs from invading your garden.
Plant in straight rows to make cultivating, harvesting and insect control easier.
Monitor regularly for pests – catching the problem early is key! (Tip: remove the bottom third of leaves on tomato plants to help prevent mould and rot.)
Encourage beneficial insects (consider

Places where asbestos might be hiding in your home
(NC) Asbestos is a naturally occurring, fibrous mineral that is durable, and it’s known for its fire-retardant properties. As a result, it was frequently added to common building materials.
By now, most of us are aware that asbestos is a potential carcinogen - that means it can cause cancer if it gets into your body. The good news is that, in most cases, if the material is left
undisturbed - sealed behind walls and floorboards, for example - the fibres aren’t floating in the air so, it’s not really something to worry about.
But if you live in an older home and are planning on doing some renovations, you should test for the presence of asbestos first.
B.C. enhances access to addictions support for women and girls
Women and girls in British Columbia living with addiction challenges will benefit from continued treatment and recovery services, thanks to provincial funding.
Westminster House Society provides services and supports for women and girls affected by addiction, including women and girls struggling with nicotine, alcohol, prescription medication and substance use, and behaviour disorders, such as problematic eating and gambling.
“When women make the brave decision to reach out for help, it’s vital the right services are in place to meet them,” said Jennifer Whiteside, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions. “That’s why our government is investing in organizations like Westminster House Society. This funding ensures women and girls will continue to access the services they need and deserve on their journey to wellness, as our government continues to build an integrated system of
mental-health and addictions care that works for all British Columbians.”
Westminster House Society is a bedbased treatment and recovery centre in New Westminster that has provided support to women and girls with addictions for 42 years. More than 4,000 women and youth have reached out to the society for help since the declaration of the toxic drug public health emergency in 2016.
“Since the Pathway to Hope launched in 2019, Westminster House has initiated recovery to over 650 women and youth girls,” said Susan Hogarth, executive director, Westminster House Society. “The Province’s investment into the programs at Westminster House will include health and wellness, as well as the addition of support staff to help our clients build recovery capital for improved quality of life.”
The Province has provided $272,000 to the society to support these services. Enhancing supports for people
living with mental-health and addiction challenges is an integral part of A Pathway to Hope, B.C.’s roadmap for building a comprehensive system of mentalhealth and addiction care for British Columbians.
“There is an urgent need to support people, including women and girls struggling with mental-health, addictions and substance use across the province,” said Kelli Paddon, Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity. “Funding for Westminster House Society will ensure women, youth and girls can get the supports
they need in a caring and supportive environment.”

(NC) As humans, we tend to be aware of threats in our environment and pay attention to dangerous things, or at least the ones we can see. But what about the things you encounter every day that you can’t see that are just as dangerous? Bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites can develop a resistance to the drugs we use to treat them. The risk of this antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is that infections that were once easily treatable with antimicrobials, such as antibiotics (e.g.,
pneumonia, strep throat or infections associated with minor injuries like scrapes and cuts) become harder to treat and may in some cases be untreatable in humans and animals.
What can you do? Slowing the development of AMR comes down to everyone doing their part by seeking medical attention when ill and using antibiotics and other antimicrobials as prescribed. Microbes (like bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi) can be
transmitted a variety of ways. Take a second look at more ways to prevent transmission in animals too:
Vaccines: Vaccines help provide immunity against a disease and reduce the chance that you or an animal will become sick. So, ensure your pets or livestock are vaccinated, and be sure to ask your vet about updating your farm’s disease management protocols.
Wild animals: Ensure there is no contact between your animals and wild animals.

Jupiter moves on from your sign for another 12 years and begins to focus on your finances to late May 2024. This will be increase in some way and can be good for earning more but you might need to watch spending more as well. You can now move ahead with any financial decisions to mid June that you may have been considering since early April.
Jupiter, the planet of growth, expansion and benefit moves into your sign, where it will remain until 26th May 2024, stimulating a new 12 year personal cycle in this time. Some sort of instant clarity could occur this week, when it comes to something personal, enabling you to move ahead, to mid June with decisions you may have been considering since early April.
It would pay you to look into things that would be best dropped because it may become obvious that in the long term matters could take a very different direction than what you had presumed so far. Life was very busy from August to March. You will benefit from having some quiet time to yourself to May 2024 so that you can contemplate matters thoroughly.
Goals you have had in mind, particularly since Christmas, can now begin to take shape in a big way over the next 12 months. This can require a lot more commitment from you, one way or another. Any increased involvement right now with other people will take shape more so from January 2024. This could also mean an important relationship for some.
You can benefit greatly, not so much through what you know but who you know, over the next 12 months, so don’t hesitate in approaching somebody who may be in a position to help you out. Involvement with a group of people can have its benefits. It will be possible to move ahead, from now to mid June, with any ideas you have floated since early April.
You can suddenly feel freed up from overwhelming expectations you have had to deal with since Christmas. There will be a sense of freedom, over the next 12 months, when it comes to planning future directions. Finish any situation that demands too much of you for perhaps the benefit of others, by mid June. You will now begin to see how this could be accomplished.
Pay close attention to the manner in which the expectations of others upon you will be increased bit by bit over the next 12 months. You need to guard against being too generous of yourself when it comes to requests. From now to mid June, pay attention to the obligations you already have on a regular basis and although it might have been challenging since early April, be determined to correct things.
There could be a large increase, over the next 12 months, when it comes to matters you need to handle on a regular basis. Be careful with promising things from now to early June. Make sure you can handle the details that will go with it. Now is a good time to put a practical foundation in place that can limit the manner in which things you have to handle don’t become overwhelming.
Putting down foundations for greater benefit in life will be possible in the next 12 months. There will be something totally different to anything you have done in life before. This will develop more from January. This can include home and family. You need to be mindful of dealing with finances sensibly from now to mid June. Something that has been held up could start to go ahead.
Life will become rather busy with other people over the next 12 months. If you have been working on something since Christmas that requires some sort of response from others, it could happen now. The action you need to take to project something into the long term can suddenly become clear. Part of this might be connected to somebody else beginning to understand you better.
There can be much to enjoy over the next 12 months and it doesn’t need to cost a lot of money. There could be new children or young people can play a greater role in some way. This would also be a good period for travel, which could include catching up with people a distance away that you have not seen in a while. If there is an interest you have wanted to pursue, this would be the time.
Personal commitments that have began to develop in your life since March can now begin to distract you in some way. This might be connected to wanting to escape but that is not possible. It might be easier to come to terms with this in your own mind from now to mid June but only if you are prepared to take a practical approach. The right information might be easier to come by in the next year.

Aahana slams influencer hiring
Actress Aahana Kumra has voiced her concern over the growing trend of hiring individuals in the entertainment industry solely based on their social media following, rather than their acting abilities. The Lipstick Under My Burkha actress finds this trend disheartening and believes it has left many aspiring actors confused about their future prospects. She criticises the presence of Instagram influencers in prominent shows on major streaming platforms, emphasising that actors with talent and theatre experience are being overlooked because they lack a significant Instagram following. “I’m sorry to say, most of the shows that are coming on the very big streaming platform feature Instagram influencers. How many actors are really on the platform? There are influencers who are influxing the acting space,” Kumra retorts. Kumra has taken matters into her own hands and is pursuing a career as a writer, aiming to create content that aligns with her creative vision. While she remains open to acting projects, Kumra is focused on exploring new opportunities and breaking free from typecasting.
FORWARD TOWORK WITH AJAY”
Hindi-tamil superstar R Madhavan and Ajay Devgn are teaming up for a film to be produced by Devgn, Abhishek Pathak and Kumar Mangat’s Panorama Studios. The film will be directed by Vikas Bahl who last directed Amitabh Bachchan in Goodbye. Confirming the project R Madhavan says, “Yes I am doing a film with Ajay Devgn. It is directed by Vikas Bahl. Both are a first for me. I am really looking forward to working with Ajay. He has shaped into such a fine actor,
one of the best we’ve got”. When probed about the role Madhavan laughs, “It is a work in progress. I know my character. But I don’t know how it will finally shape up. I am not supposed to talk about my role”. Further probing reveals that the film has equally prominent roles for both heroes. Neither Madhavan nor Devgn is known to do twohero projects. For them both to agree to do this project, it has to be something equally challenging to both.
A ctor Sonakshi Sinha, who was at the receiving end of criticism for some of the controversial scenes in the film Rowdy Rathore, opened up about the double standards that exist in the film industry. According to her, women often bear the brunt of such situations and are made out to be the villains. Interviewer asked her about a scene where Akshay Kumar’s character held her by the waist and said ‘Yeh mera maal hai’. To this, Sonakshi said, “Today where I stand, I would never do something like that. I was so young at that time that I was not thinking in this direction. For me, it was a fact that I am doing a film with Prabhudheva, I am doing a film with Akshay Kumar, who would say no to something like that? Sanjay Leela Bhansali was producing it. Why would I say no? At that time, my thinking was very very different. Today, if I would read a script like that, I would not do it. Things change with time, I too have changed.”
