Both Sam and Kathi are quick to add their sense of humor plays a big part in their resiliency in coping with stress. They try to make laughter a part of every day.

What keeps the couple resilient through this journey? “My wife Kathi,” Sam says. “Our faith,” Kathi says. “Every night I’ve prayed and asked God for a miracle,” says Kathi, tearing up. “And every morning I’ve picked up and held my wristbands that say, ‘Love God Expect a Miracle.’”

“During Sam’s recovery, there are times when he still coughs and catches his breath,” Kathi says. “I’ll be holding him, and then we’ll find something humorous about that moment and start to crack up with laughter. Throughout this journey, a sense of humor is so important.” Embracing every day their philosophy to live life with the gate wide open, Sam and Kathi look forward to sharing more laughter and good times together. They love hiking and travel, and their bucket list includes driving across country “to see our beautiful USA and spend time in Florida.” The couple are chronicling Sam’s healthcare journey by keeping a special jar with notes and expressions of gratitude for the exceptional medical care and technology that was there for them when they needed it. They plan to open the jar and read the messages on Jan. 1, 2023, to remember how far they’ve come as they look forward to a new year together.
