Welcome to Wes world 2
The films of director Wes Anderson are loveable eccentrics. Like misunderstood children wearing slightly grown-up clothes, they inhabit an alternative universe, a bit like ours, but one where things are just that little bit odder, smarter, sadder.

3 Days to Kill
Francais, Deutsch, Espanol 中文字幕 Action / Crime, 117 mins 12 Director: McG Starring: Kevin Costner, Hailee Steinfeld, Connie Nielsen
If its action you want you’re in good hands with 3 Days to Kill. Scripted by Luc Besson of Nikita and Leon fame, directed by Charlie’s Angels’ McG and starring Costner, this tale of a CIA agent on the trail of a terrorist won’t exercise your brain cells, but delivers a massive payload of bang for your buck.
15
Never one to shy away from difficult subject matter (in the past he’s tackled sex addiction and hunger strikes) director Steve McQueen tackles one of the most difficult subjects of them all. Star Ejiofor has won considerable acclaim for his role as Solomon Northup, a carpenter who is kidnapped, sold into slavery and renamed Platt. First he is bought by William Ford (Benedict Cumberbatch), a relatively relaxed slaver. But when he’s later purchased by the vicious and abusive Edwin Epps (Fassbender) his troubles worsen. Be in no doubt this is an unflinching portrait of a shameful period in history, but as critics and awards panels have been quick to point out, it is also an essential film and a modern masterpiece.
47 Ronin 12
Action / Adventure, 118 mins Director: Carl Rinsch Starring: Keanu Reeves, Hiroyuki Sanada, Ko Shibasaki
After a treacherous warlord slaughters their master, a group of samurai vow to seek revenge and restore honour to their people. First, however, they must seek the help of Kai (Reeves) – a half-breed they once rejected – as they fight their way across a savage world of mythic beasts, shape-shifting witchcraft and wondrous terrors.
American Hustle Crime / Drama, 138 mins Director: David O. Russell Starring: Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence
With multiple awards and nominations, a to die-for cast and an ever-evolving plot, American Hustle is a real treat. Set in a beautifully realised 1978, it finds seasoned tricksters Irving Rosenfeld (Bale) and Sydney Prosser (Adams) making a deal with FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Cooper), the idea being that in return for leniency they’ll set up an elaborate sting to help ensnare other conmen. In other words, the big

con is on. However, Irving’s wife Rosalyn (Lawrence) threatens to put a spanner in the works thanks to her rather, er… ‘erratic’ behaviour. To say more would be to spoil things – suffice to say, it’s a superb ensemble piece that makes great use of its ‘70s setting and is not to be missed.
movies August: Osage County Drama, 121 mins 15 Director: John Wells Starring: Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Ewan McGregor
An Oscar-nominated Streep is on top form here as a fiery matriarch trying to cope with the sudden disappearance of her poet husband. However, it’s when her daughters (Julia Roberts, Juliette Lewis and Julianne Nicholson) return home to support her that the drama really begins. An absolute feast of acting.
Anchorman 2
The Butler Français, Deutsch, Español Drama, 132 mins Director: Lee Daniels Starring: Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, John Cusack
12
Loosely inspired by the story of Eugene Allen, who worked at the White House for 34 years, The Butler concerns Cecil Gaines (Whitaker), whose tenure spans 1952 to 1986, and takes in unprecedented social upheaval. Whitaker is mesmerising and the supporting cast dazzling.
About Time
日本語, Français, Deutsch Comedy, 119 mins Director: Adam McKay Starring: Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd
15
A sequel to what is one of the best comedies in recent memory was always going to be hotly anticipated – and though it’s been some time in the making, it’s been well worth the wait. Almost all the key cast return, only this time they’re joined by Harrison Ford in a story that sees anchorman Ron beginning work at a new 24-hour news station and getting the old team back together.
Captain Phillips
日本語, Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Action, 134 mins Director: Paul Greengrass Starring: Tom Hanks, Barkhad Abdi, Barkhad Abdirahman
12
Not only does this true-life tale of a captain and his crew being held hostage by ruthless Somalian pirates have a gripping set-up, but in the hands of director Paul Greengrass and actor Tom Hanks, it is real edge-ofyour-seat cinema.
日本語, Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Rom Com, 123 mins 12 Director: Richard Curtis Starring: Rachel McAdams, Bill Nighy, Domhnall Gleeson
The latest from Richard Curtis is a romcom about Tim (Gleeson) who finds he can return to the past and change it. Pretty soon he’s using this ability to woo the lovely Mary (McAdams) with surprising results. Plenty of laughs and a very British sensibility – what else would you expect from the brains behind Notting Hill?
The Counsellor
Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Thriller, 117 mins 18 Director: Ridley Scott Starring: Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz
Ridley Scott has pulled together an all-star cast including Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem for the violent tale of the titular counsellor (Fassbender) who gets in way over his head when he attempts to deal with Mexican drug traffickers.
The Book Thief
Cuban Fury
Français, Deutsch Drama, 131 mins 12 Director: Brian Percival Starring: Sophie Nélisse, Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson
Comedy, 98 mins Director: James Griffiths Starring: Rashida Jones, Nick Frost, Chris O’Dowd
Set in Nazi Germany and narrated by Death (yes, Death), this quirky but heartrending drama concerns a young girl who becomes involved in the plan to hide a Jewish man from the Nazi authorities - making Death take a closer interest…
15
Usually paired with Simon Pegg for the likes of Shaun of the Dead and World’s End, Frost takes the lead in this hugely likable romantic comedy. He stars as Bruce, a former Salsa champ who needs to rekindle his love of dance in order to win the girl of his dreams. 7
movies
Dallas Buyers Club Bio Drama, 117 mins 15 Director: Jean-Marc Vallée Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto, Jennifer Garner
A risk-taking and compelling movie – the kind that literally dares you to look away – it’s easy to see why Dallas Buyers Club has been festooned with awards and plaudits. McConaughey plays the real-life Ron Woodroof, who upon discovering he’s HIV positive, begins smuggling illegal pharmaceutical drugs and selling them to other patients, considerably alleviating their pain. From potentially dry subject matter, director Jean-Marc Vallée conjures a bold and absorbing biopic, anchored by a brilliant central performance. Having lost an incredible 50 pounds for the part, McConaughey completely inhabits the role, giving what is by far the best performance of his career. That he’s matched in intensity by Leto as a cross-dressing fellow patient is testament to the quality that goes right through this richly satisfying film.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2
日本語, Français, Deutsch Family Animation, 95 mins U Director: Cody Cameron, Kris Pearn Voices of: Bill Hader, Anna Faris, Will Forte
A machine that makes food fall from the sky – what could possibly go wrong? In this acclaimed animated sequel, our hero Flint Lockwood discovers that his amazing water-into-food gizmo is being used to create food-animal hybrids. This film is a delight from start to finish.
Endless Love
日本語, Français, Deutsch Romance, 104 mins Director: Shana Feste Starring: Gabriella Wilde, Alex Pettyfer, Bruce Greenwood
12
Doomed love is the theme of this weepy remake, with Pettyfer the love-struck kid who worships Wilde from afar. When he finally works up the courage to speak to her, it turns out she feels the same way and the two become sweethearts. Trouble is her middle-class parents think he’s a bad influence and set out to split them up…
Enough Said Comedy / Drama, 97 mins Director: Nicole Holofcener Starring: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, James Gandolfini, Catherine Keener
Her Romance/Drama, 126 mins Director: Spike Jonze Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson, Amy Adams
15
If we told you that Her is a film about a man, Theodore (Phoenix) who falls in love with his computer’s operating system (Johansson) you’d be forgiven for assuming it was a comedy. Not so. Sure, it has its funny moments (yes, the relationship is consummated and yes, that ‘morning-after awkwardness’ is perfectly evoked) but in every other respect Her is a straightforward romance – the only difference being that one of participants is a computer. But does she really love him, or is she simply programmed to do so? Jonze won an Oscar for his screenplay, and coming from the mind of the man who brought you Being John Malkovich, it’s unquestionably a quirky film. But perhaps more surprisingly it’s also incredibly warm and heartfelt, while the performances of Johansson and especially Phoenix are wondrous.
8
12
Louis-Dreyfus stars as a woman with a dilemma in this romantic comedy. When she meets a new friend (Keener) and starts dating a new guy (Gandolfini – in one of his last roles), all seems well until she discovers that her new pals are former husband and wife...
Ender’s Game Action / Adventure, 114 mins 12 Director: Gavin Hood Starring: Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield, Hallee Steinfeld
Action-packed military sci-fi focusing on Ender, a quiet but brilliant boy who may become the saviour of the human race. However, as he is honed into a killer at battle school, he begins to hate what he has become – even though his skills may be the only hope of saving Earth and his loved ones.

movies The Grand Budapest Hotel 日本語, Français, Deutsch Comedy, 100 mins Director: Wes Anderson Starring: Ralph Fiennes, Adrien Brody, F. Murray Abraham
You know what you’re getting from a Wes Anderson movie. His style is quirky, abstract and deadpan, and in that respect, The Grand Budapest Hotel is no different from work such as The Royal Tenenbaums or The Darjeeling Limited. However, this time round he’s added something new to the mix, making this his most fully rounded effort so far. The film recounts the adventures of

M. Gustave (Fiennes), a concierge at the titular hotel, who becomes involved in the theft and recovery of a priceless painting – all told against the backdrop of impending world war. You’d expect it to be wry and amusing – and it is. But the new addition is heart, and the combination makes for an utterly unique experience.

Can Anna save her homeland as well as her sister?
The LEGO Movie Gravity
日本語, Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Drama / Sci-fi, 91 mins 12 Director: Alfonso Cuarón Starring: Sandra Bullock, George Clooney
This film is by common consensus the greatest science-fiction film of recent years. Directed by Alfonso Cuarón, it presents the simplest of dilemmas: two astronauts (Clooney and Bullock) find themselves stranded outside the Earth’s atmosphere when their shuttle explodes. Drifting in space, unable to contact mission control, the two must try to stay alive and try to reach safety. Not since 2001: A Space Odyssey has the vast grandeur of space been so brilliantly rendered, but what makes Gravity a cut above is the fact that director Cuarón has located the heart and humanity within the spectacle. Tense and absorbing, this is not to be missed.

Cast all your doubts aside. Yes a LEGO movie sounds suspect on paper, but in reality this story of a LEGO minifigure who must save the world is an absolute hoot from beginning to end. Clever, funny, startlingly goodlooking – and that’s just the first five minutes – not only does it feature a neat twist, but a great song you’ll still be singing months later.

Lone Survivor
日本語, Français Action, 121 mins 15 Director: Peter Berg Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch
The most authentic look at modern military combat since Black Hawk Down, Lone Survivor stars Wahlberg as the leader of a team of US Navy SEALs. During a covert mission their position is compromised and they must cover into the mountains, pursued by a Taliban force.
The Monuments Men War Drama, 118 mins Director: George Clooney Starring: George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray
12
Considering the subject matter it’s fitting that there should be something of a classic feel to George Clooney’s latest directorial outing. Boasting a style and tone that harks back to a Hollywood of years gone by, it’s a comedy-drama with a mouth-watering cast set at the end of World War II – just as the Nazi occupation of Europe is coming to an end. With the allies concerned that fleeing Germans will take priceless artworks with them, Clooney’s conscientious officer Frank Stokes is tasked with assembling an army unit, ‘the monuments men’, a bookish crew of historian-soldiers (including Damon and Murray) whose aim is to return stolen art it to its rightful owners. Not the least of the team’s problems is the fact that their own side refuses to acknowledge the importance of their work…

Martin Scorsese’s latest shares DNA with his classics Goodfellas and Casino in the sense that it focuses on a reprehensible main character, in this case DiCaprio’s slimy stockbroker Jordan Belfort, and literally dares you to hate him. The film follows Belfort as he goes into business selling cheap stocks to working-class people, preying on the weakness of those less fortunate than he is, amassing a fortune and spending it on a decadent lifestyle of sex and drugs. The Armstrong Lie 124 mins
The fact that this documentary was originally called The Road Back should give you a clue as to how much it changed from inception to release. Chances are you haven’t heard of Claudia Lennear, Táta Vega or Lisa Fischer, but thanks to their work with the likes of The Rolling Stones, Joe Cocker, Tina Turner and David Bowie, you’ve almost certainly heard them in action. They’re backing singers, and in this, the winner of this year’s Oscar for best documentary, they finally get a chance to step from behind the star players and truly shine. Director Morgan Neville has brought the trio together to swap studio tales, while stars such as Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder and Mick Jagger sing their praises. Other backing singers make their mark, too, including a newer talent, Judith Hill, who worked with Michael Jackson, and Merry Clayton, who revisits the studio where she famously sang the classic Gimme Shelter refrain while pregnant. Unsung heroes, indeed.

Confronted over their debts by wife Claire (Sheridan Smith), he begins drugging her to keep her quiet, and when the pressure mounts, goes to even more grisly lengths to maintain her silence. Relocating to New Zealand he courts a second wife, Felicity. Pretty soon he’s spending more than he can afford, Felicity is asking questions, and… you can see a pattern developing, can’t you? Don’t be fooled by Shearsmith’s comedy background – he shines in a purely straight role, with John Hannah also terrific as the dogged DI Henry.
True Detective 60 mins
Absolutely not to be missed, this brand-new crime series from HBO has had US critics in raptures. It gladdens the heart to see Kylie Minogue back where she belongs – at the very pinnacle of the pop firmament. Working on a principle of ‘if ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ this, her twelfth album, is kittenish dance-pop at its most highly polished – and all the better for it.

Out Among the Stars Country
They don’t get much more seminal than this. An album that from its iconic cover art to its conceptual ambition and sheer sonic reach, completely redefined the capabilities of the format – and still, thirty years later, sounds way ahead of its time. You don’t so much listen to it, as immerse yourself in it.
Though they’ve no doubt received a boost thanks to Ricky’s appearance on The Voice, the Kaiser’s fifth couldn’t be further away from bland reality-TV fare. With its title lampooning Tony Blair’s 1997 election pledge, the album finds the band on explosive, defiant form.
Regularly ranked amongst the greatest albums of all time. 30 years ago Purple Rain marked the moment Prince added a mastery of pop and rock to his already supreme command of funk and R&B and created a huge crossover success.
The fact that country legend Cash died in 2003 hasn’t stopped him releasing new material, so clearly there was a lot ‘in the can’. What’s astounding is the depth of quality to be found, with Out Among the Stars standing alongside his legendary American Recordings in terms of sheer quality.
Roger Daltrey and Wilko Johnson Going Back Home Rock/Blues
Paolo Nutini Caustic Love Pop/Singer/Songwriter
Paolo Nutini’s latest – his first for four years – sees him channelling the spirit of Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye with a set of socialconscious-soul and cast-iron funk delivered with the kind of silky vocal prowess we’ve come to expect.
It’s the third album from the mercurial popstress, and as ever she mixes up different styles into a truly idiosyncratic brew of pop, R&B, soul and jazz – all tied together by her instantly recognisable vocals. Guest producers include Plan B and Pharrell Williams.
In typical style, the legendary guitarist with Dr Feelgood greeted his pancreatic cancer diagnosis by refusing chemotherapy and going on tour. His collaboration with The Who’s lead singer features ten self-penned originals, as well as a cover of Bob Dylan’s Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?

Health advice DVT is more likely to strike if you are immobile for a long time (post-operative patients are at risk), so long-haul flyers should take the following precautions… — Drink lots of fluid and avoid excess alcohol. — Keep your circulation going during the flight by wiggling your toes and ankles, taking a walk up and down the aisle if possible. — Check out the Virgin health video for further health tips.

Use your
mobile phone So, you’re on a connected flight – how exciting! But what does that mean? It means you can use your own mobile phone, on an aircraft!
AeroMobile is the network you’ll roam on inflight, just like you’ll roam on a foreign network when you’re overseas. It is a registered mobile phone operator; the only difference is they operate at 37,000ft.
The bottom line is you’ll be billed by your mobile operator, so whatever they charge you for roaming, typically in the ‘rest of the world’ category, is what you’ll pay. You will usually receive a free text from your home operator with pricing information.
— A mid-Atlantic text to your friend in London travels 455,804km over satellite networks, and would typically reach them in less than 30 seconds. That’s the same as 11 trips around the world in just half a minute!
To celebrate the fact that you need never be incommunicado again, and that being a geek is cool, here are some nerdy facts about our inflight connectivity service that might surprise you!
— So far this year Virgin Atlantic passengers have sent over a quarter of a million texts to friends, family and colleagues from 37,000ft.
— Did you know that AeroMobile has agreements with over 220 operators around the world, so even if you’re not from the UK you can probably use the service.
They also operate over satellites, which is a bit cooler than mobile phone masts.
How to use WiFi on connected flights: On certain aircraft, not only can you use your mobile phone to call or text but you can also wirelessly connect your portable devices to our WiFi service. After takeoff, crew will advise if your aircraft is WiFi enabled, so listen out for announcements.
— Sending an email to your boss from 37,000ft only takes a few seconds longer than being in the office – they’ll never know the difference! — The average cost of sending a text from onboard is just 45p.
e onboard How to use your phone onboard:
1.
2. 3. 4. 5.
Remember to switch your phone off for take-off and landing. After take-off (above 6,000 metres) the AeroMobile service will become available.
Switch your phone on, making sure ‘Flight mode’ is off and ‘Roaming’ is on.
If your phone doesn’t automatically connect to the AeroMobile network, manually select AeroMobile in Settings/Carrier or Mobile Networks.
Once connected you’ll receive a welcome text from AeroMobile. It’s likely you’ll receive a text from your home mobile operator with pricing information.
You can now use your mobile phone to call, text, email and surf the internet. Usage is billed by your home phone operator and international roaming rates apply.
Be aware that when using the data roaming services your network operator’s standard roaming charges will apply.

sustainability
Hot news! We’ve just released our brand new Change is in the Air (CIITA) animation. It summarises what we’re doing on our sustainability programme in a fun three and a half minutes. Check out the new video in the A-Z listing in the TV section! Narrated by Sir Richard Branson, the animation is a whistle-stop tour of our CIITA programme and includes thirsty microbes, dancing horses, baby orangutans and pilots dressed in plastic bottles… Intrigued? The video shows how we’re working hard to reduce our environmental impact and to support communities in need. We want to give you peace of mind so you know you’re flying with an airline that cares and acts responsibly. Our number one environmental priority is to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions for every journey you take. You can help cut emissions too, by packing lighter or offsetting the emissions from your flight. We’re really excited to be pioneering new sustainable fuels, which use little microbes to help convert waste gas from industrial plants to aircraft fuel.
harsh effects of climate change and other environmental issues on a daily basis. We also fund FTC’s hugely successful UK schools’ programme, which empowers young people in the UK to get involved and be the change they want to see in the world. But the success of our community investment programme is mainly thanks to you, our customers, who contribute loose change and foreign currency to our inflight ’Change for Children’ appeal. Please make your donation in the envelope provided. Here at Virgin Atlantic, we believe that Change is in the Air. We hope you do too.
We also recycle. For example, once you’re done with your inflight headsets, the little sponges will be given a new lease of life as the surface for an equestrian centre. And your old blanket may end up keeping an orphaned orangutan cosy. Also, did you know, we were the first airline to partner with the Sustainable Restaurant Association and to offer Fairtrade tea and coffee onboard? For community investment, Virgin Atlantic Foundation has donated many millions of pounds to children’s charities all over the world, as well as in the UK. By working with our charity partner Free the Children (FTC), we support communities who are already facing the
You can help too! To help save lives and support our school programme please place any loose change or foreign currency in the Change for Children envelope and hand it to a cabin crew member. To keep your donation safe, please don’t leave it in your seat pocket. Your donation will support international community development and inspire UK young people to take action at a global or local level. Thank you!
About Free The Children Free The Children’s mission is to create a world where all young people are free to achieve their fullest potential as agents of change. They couldn’t have a better blueprint for success: the organisation was founded by 12-yearold Craig Kielburger in 1995 when he gathered 11 school friends to begin fighting child labour.
Offset the carbon emissions from your flight You can do your bit for the environment by offsetting the carbon emissions associated with your journey. Through non-profit partner myclimate we offer Gold Standard projects delivering real benefits to local communities and the environment. You can offset onboard – look for details in your Retail Therapy magazine and ask a cabin crew member. You can also get details online at: virginatlantic.myclimate.org
