How to please all of the people all of the time... In Hollywood, they have a saying to explain every box-office stinker and every word-ofmouth sensation: ‘Nobody knows anything’ Of course, like all good sayings, there are exceptions that prove the rule, because actually, what every studio exec knows is that any film with cross-generational appeal equals box-office gold. In other words, if you can entertain the kids and their parents, then Harvey Weinstein will be lighting your cigars before you know it. But how, is the million-dollar question? Easy. Just follow our simple guide and you too will be joining the makers of Toy Story and Shrek at Tinseltown’s top table. Get your casting right Generally speaking, kids couldn’t care less who’s rocking the biggest trailer on set. But their parents do. And they like nothing better than a bit of big-name stunt casting. Put it this way, score a Hollywood A-lister to chew the scenery in a family film and you’ll find yourself right behind Johnny Depp in the queue for the gold-plated cash machine. Currently in vogue is a trend for leading ladies as fairy-tale villains, with Angelina Jolie the latest to follow in the footsteps of Julia Roberts and Charlize Theron. Playing the eponymous wicked witch in Maleficent, she leaves no scene unstolen, tormenting Sleeping Beauty to perfection and delivering one of the most enjoyable and acclaimed performances of the season. And that, as they say, is job done.
2
Meanwhile, let’s not forget the star-studded ‘voice casts’ of the animated world. For the talent it means every day is dress-down Friday, while adult audiences like nothing better than a game of ‘guess the voice actor’. ‘Is that the guy out of Parks and Recreation?’ they’ll say during The LEGO Movie. ‘I’m sure I recognise whoever’s playing Jewel,’ they’ll mumble over Rio 2. (Answers: yes, dad, it is indeed Parks and Recreation’s Chris Pratt playing The LEGO Movie’s Emmet. And yes you should recognise that voice in Rio 2, because it’s none other than Anne Hathaway). Be weird Surreality works well in evoking a sense of childhood, which is something with which everyone, regardless of age, can identify. As a touchstone, consider one of the earliest and most enduring examples of the whole phenomena: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, while more recently the brilliantly quirky landscapes of The LEGO Movie have offered audiences an almost psychedelic experience. In short, weird works.
ANGELINA JOLIE, MALEFICENT
Hark back to the classics It’s doubtful whether even the makers of Frozen could have predicted just how popular their film would be. The ice-caked Disney tale of a fearless princess who sets off in search of her sister is now the biggest-grossing animated film of all time, with a worldwide take of more than $1bn. Without a doubt, it’s achieved this success by enchanting a massive cross section of the public, but even so, the exact alchemy remains open to debate. It could be the songs (see ‘have some good songs’, below), or it could be its universal themes (see ‘and how about a few grown-up themes while we’re at it?’), but the clever money is on the fact that with its princesses, its wisecracking companions and its adventurous feel, Frozen delivers a ‘classic’ Disney experience – one that delights new viewers while igniting warm and fuzzy feelings of nostalgia in the oldies. Have some good songs You know that game where you have to eat a doughnut without licking your lips? On a similar note, just try watching The LEGO Movie without getting the ‘everything is awesome’ ditty stuck in your head. It’s way harder. Meanwhile, the sumptuous song-and-dance scenes in Rio 2 will make you believe a macaw can boogie, while Frozen’s ridiculously addictive songbook already has a following that makes fans of One Direction look like models of reserve and restraint.
“Adult audiences like nothing better than a game of ‘guess the voice actor’” Include jokes only the adults get You have to be careful with this one (see ‘but don’t go overboard’), and certainly it’s a tactic that’s fallen out of favour in recent years, but even so it doesn’t hurt to keep the grown-ups giggling. Pioneered by Shrek, the jokes tend to be either a) references to other films, or b) near-the-knuckle gags the kids won’t get until they start secondary school and are force-fed episodes of The Inbetweeners. However, what you don’t want is for the film to feel exclusive, and we’ll come on to that… And how about a few grown-up themes while we’re at it? From the gentle satire of the Toy Story movies to the more thought-provoking and complex nature of, say, The Hunger Games or Divergent, adults just love a bit of ironic topicality. Witness how Pixar’s The Incredibles lampoons the litigiousness of US society, or how The LEGO Movie takes potshots at faceless corporate culture. Kids, when mum and dad are nudging each other and tittering in a knowing fashion, that’s them appreciating satire. (Either that or they’ve worked out that it’s Chris Pratt in The LEGO Movie, or they’re laughing at something rude in Shrek…) But don’t go overboard Funnily enough, it was with the release of Shrek 2 that the bubble almost burst. Here was a film so packed with star cameos, filmic references and an (over) abundance of risqué humour that it virtually ceased being a children’s film altogether. Likewise, Shark Tales, which starred Robert De Niro and based its entire plot around a Godfather film, fell flat with critics and audiences for the same reason.
THE LEGO MOVIE
DIVERGENT
Just be ace Actually, a brilliantly crafted film, with a great script, voice-acting and themes that are redolent of childhood, will win every time. Frozen is a superb movie, whatever your age, while The LEGO Movie is a perfect example of a film that, despite a frankly unappetising premise, exceeds all expectations by just being very, very good indeed. The truth is, it’s not easy, but crack that nut and everything will indeed be awesome. Words by Andrew Holmes

movies Only Lovers Left Alive
movies 22 Jump Street
日本語, Français, Deutsch Comedy, 112 mins 15 Directors: Phil Lord, Christopher Miller Starring: Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum
This sequel to 21 Jump Street sees mismatched cops Hill and Tatum posing as students to bust a crime ring. However, their relationship is threatened by what you could call ‘extra-curricular’ activities.
300: Rise of an Empire A Million Ways to Die in the West
日本語, Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Comedy, 116 mins Director: Seth MacFarlane Starring: Seth MacFarlane, Charlize Theron, Amanda Seyfried
15
Seth MacFarlane’s latest mix of near-the-knuckle humour and heartwarming moments hasn’t been well-received by critics, but to be fair, his tale of a cowardly sheep farmer falling in love and battling an outlaw isn’t meant to be high art. It is, however, meant to be funny – and it is.
日本語, Français, Deutsch Action, 102 mins 15 Director: Noam Murro Starring: Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Lena Headey
With blood and rippling muscles aplenty, this sequel sees the Athenians facing the evil Persian Empire, whose progress across the land seems unstoppable.
Anchorman 2
日本語, Français, Deutsch Comedy, 119 mins Director: Adam McKay Starring: Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd
15
This sequel to one of the best comedies in recent memory has been well worth the wait. Almost all the key cast return, only this time joined by Harrison Ford in a story that sees anchorman Ron beginning work at a new 24-hour news station and getting the old team back together.
Bad Neighbours Français, Deutsch Comedy, 97 mins Director: Nicholas Stoller Starring: Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, Rose Byrne
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Warning: Contains scenes unsuitable for nervous flyers. 日本語, Français, Deutsch Action, 141 mins Director: Marc Webb Starring: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx
12
Another dose of Andrew Garfield as the world’s favourite wall-crawler, this time facing off against Electro (Foxx), the Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan) and the massed forces of Oscorp – while also struggling to meet his everyday Peter Parker obligations, which include the love of his life Gwen (again played by Stone). It’s a hard life being a superhero. 6
15
The kind of comedy where things start badly for the protagonists and get worse, Bad Neighbours finds a suburban couple living next to a raucous ‘frat house’. When they ask the lads to keep quiet, the trouble really starts, heading to more dangerous, and hilarious, extremes.
movies Cold in July Thriller, 110 mins Director: Jim Mickle Starring: Michael C Hall, Vinessa Shaw, Sam Shepard
15
If hardboiled is your bag, you need look no further than this superb crime thriller, which is not only tough as old leather, but also so gritty you could use it for sandpaper. A fine cast is headed by Sam Shepard, whose craggy looks suit the material to a tee, while Johnson and Dexter’s Hall add moody gravitas, with the latter playing a man who shoots an intruder dead and then discovers there’s more to the break-in than meets the eye. The plot has plenty of twists and turns and the direction is suitably laconic. But with a trio of outstanding performances and a script to die for, it’s a sense of classical, no frills film-making that lifts this into best-of-year territory.
The Calling Français, Deutsch, Español Thriller, 108 mins 15 Director: Jason Stone Starring: Susan Sarandon, Gil Bellows, Donald Sutherland
Belle Français, Deutsch, Español Drama, 104 mins Director: Amma Asante Starring: Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Tom Wilkinson, Emily Watson
12
This sumptuously shot biopic of mixed-race aristocrat Dido Belle (Mbatha-Raw) focuses on the huge challenges she faced as an outsider in the social circles of 18th-century England. When she begins a relationship with a young lawyer, she becomes involved in a landmark slavery case.
Based on the novel by Inger Ash Wolfe, this taut thriller features a standout performance from Sarandon at her dogged, empathetic best as smalltown detective Hazel Micallef. When Hazel stops on a routine call, she stumbles across a gruesome murder that sets her off on a terrifying journey of (self) discovery, unearthing a series of killings with similar, grisly crime scenes. Meanwhile, a local priest (Sutherland) thinks there may be a link to an ancient ritual, and Hazel finds herself on the trail of a religious serial killer following a deadly, higher calling. In all, this is a dark, twisted journey into the shadowy landscape between faith and fear.
7
movies Blended
日本語, Español, Deutsch Comedy, 117 mins Director: Frank Coraci Starring: Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Bella Thorne
12
Continuing a partnership that started with The Wedding Singer and went on with 50 First Dates, Sandler and Barrymore play single parents who, despite a disastrous first date, keep being thrown together. Funny, quirky and with a great supporting cast, resistance to its charms is futile.
Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier
日本語, Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Adventure, 136 mins 12 Director: Anthony Russo, Joe Russo Starring: Chris Evans, Samuel L Jackson, Scarlett Johansson
Evans returns as Steve Rogers, who, having awoken in the present day, must first get to grips with the modern world before facing down an old adversary: the Soviet agent known as the Winter Soldier. As ever with the Marvel superhero franchise there’s major overlap with the other movies – and here it comes in the shape of Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow.
Divergent
日本語, Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Adventure, 139 mins 12 Director: Neil Burger Starring: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Kate Winslet
There’s more than a touch of The Hunger Games to this adventure set in a dystopian society divided into five factions based on virtues. Tris (Woodley) has grown up in Abnegation (the selfless faction), but when it comes to her aptitude test it’s discovered that she doesn’t fully belong to any group, and is in fact ‘divergent’. Her troubles are only just getting started… 8
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes 日本語 Action, 130 mins Director: Matt Reeves Starring: Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman
12
This sequel to 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes improves upon its illustrious predecessor. Set 10 years later, it finds Earth ravaged by a virus that has left the apes, led by Caesar, well and truly in charge. However, their simian paradise is threatened when a band of human survivors under the aegis of Oldman turn up and plan to restore the human-ape balance of power. As with Rise of the Planet of the Apes, this movie combines heart and emotion with eye-poppingly brilliant special effects and action setpieces, as well as a considerable helping of food for thought. In short, this is blockbuster entertainment at its very best.

Edge of Tomorrow
日本語, Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Action, 113 mins 12 Director: Doug Liman Starring: Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton
The latest Cruise epic just happens to be his best film in ages. Directed by Doug ‘The Bourne Identity’ Liman, it’s been described as Groundhog Day meets Starship Troopers, and is just as humane and action-packed as that comparison suggests. Set in the future, it stars the Cruiser as an advertising executive who misbehaves and is punished by being sent to the frontline. Inexperienced and scared, he is promptly killed in action – then sent back in time to repeat the process again and again, stuck in a perpetual loop. Meanwhile, he develops feelings for Rita Vrataski (Blunt), a hero who was once caught in the same event, but can’t do anything because every time they meet, it’s for the first time. Brilliant stuff.
Fading Gigolo Comedy, 90 mins Director: John Turturro Starring: Woody Allen, John Turturro, Sharon Stone
15
In a film written and directed by John Turturro, Woody Allen stars as a man asked to organise a ménage à trois for Sharon Stone and Sofía Vergara. He ropes Turturro in to do the deed, and pretty soon the pair are building a thriving trade, with Turturro the unlikely gigolo and Allen his equally unlikely pimp. The Allen-Turturro pairing is especially entertaining – but it’s also a very warm and romantic film.
Ghostbusters Classic, 100 mins Director: Ivan Reitman Starring: Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver
The Fault in Our Stars 12
Classic comedy from 1984 as Murray, Aykroyd and co swing into action, set up shop as the eponymous spirit-catchers and then fall foul of the authorities with catastrophic, marshmallowbased consequences. They don’t make them like this any more, so if it’s great one-liners, not to mention some genuinely spooky moments you’re after, who you gonna call?
Romance, 126 mins 12 Director: Josh Boone Starring: Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, Laura Dern
Based on the bestselling novel, this affecting romantic comedydrama features a standout performance from Woodley as a teenage cancer patient who, when her parents force her to attend a support group, meets and falls in love with Gus (Elgort). It’s the kind of movie that makes you laugh even when you have a lump in your throat.
11
movies The Grand Budapest Hotel
日本語, Français, Deutsch Comedy, 100 mins Director: Wes Anderson Starring: Ralph Fiennes, Adrien Brody, Bill Murray
15
Like all Wes Anderson movies, The Grand Budapest Hotel is quirky, abstract and deadpan, but it also has genuine heart, making it his most fully rounded film yet. It tells the tale of a hotel concierge involved in the theft and recovery of a priceless painting, against the backdrop of looming world war.
Godzilla
日本語, Français, Deutsch Action, 123 mins Director: Gareth Edwards Starring: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen
12
The words ‘Godzilla’ and ‘acclaimed’ don’t usually mix, but here we have it – a rootin’ tootin’ monster movie that the critics loved. Of course, when two giant parasitic creatures called MUTOs awake an ageold force of nature by the name of Godzilla, there’s plenty of fire-breathing monster action. But there’s also enough character development to ensure those good reviews.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 Español Animation, 102 mins PG Director: Dean DeBlois Voices of: Jay Baruchel, Kristen Wiig, Cate Blanchett
Animated sequel set five years after the events of the first one, when Hiccup and Toothless united dragons and Vikings on the island of Berk. All is blissful for the young dragon riders, until one of their adventures leads to the discovery of a secret ice cave and the two friends find themselves at the centre of a battle to preserve the island’s peaceful ways.
The LEGO Movie
日本語, Français, Deutsch Animation, 100 mins Directors: Phil Lord, Christopher Miller Voices of: Will Arnett, Elizabeth Banks, Alison Brie
U
Cast all your doubts aside. Yes, a LEGO movie might sound suspect, but this story of a LEGO minifigure who has to save the world is a hoot from beginning to end. Clever, funny and startlingly good-looking.
“Until we all get our own dragon to go flying with, this is a story sufficiently thrilling to have us all airborne” Empire on How to Train Your Dragon 2 12
The Love Punch Comedy, 94 mins Director: Joel Hopkins Starring: Emma Thompson, Pierce Brosnan, Timothy Spall
12
In this romantic heist comedy, a couple who divorced amicably are each looking forward to retirement. Until, that is, a con man steals their pension fund and they set out for revenge.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit
日本語, Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Action, 105 mins Director: Kenneth Branagh Starring: Chris Pine, Kevin Costner, Kiera Knightley
Chris Pine is the latest leading man to star as CIA agent Jack Ryan, crossing swords with a dastardly Russian businessman.
12
movies
Maleficent
日本語, Français, Deutsch Fantasy, 97 mins Director: Robert Stromberg Starring: Angelina Jolie, Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning
PG
A live-action retelling of Sleeping Beauty, this latest from Disney has a novel twist – the story is told from the perspective of the selfproclaimed ‘mistress of all evil’, Maleficent. Jolie’s performance in the title role is a tour de force, leaving no piece of the fantastically baroque scenery unchewed. That Fanning can match her is testament to a great supporting cast.
Goodfellas Classic, 139 mins Director: Martin Scorsese Starring: Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci
18
One of the best films ever made, Goodfellas traces the rise and fall of real-life mafia informant Henry Hill. It’s violent and profane, but has unforgettable performances and perfect direction by Scorsese.
The Monuments Men War Drama, 118 mins 12 Director: George Clooney Starring: George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray
As the Nazi occupation of Europe is coming to an end, Clooney’s conscientious officer Frank Stokes is tasked with assembling an army unit whose aim is to return stolen art to its rightful owners.
© 2014 Disney Enterprises, Inc.
Locke Drama / Thriller, 85 mins Director: Steven Knight Starring: Tom Hardy, Ruth Wilson, Olivia Colman
15
If you’re in the market for something different, then look no further. With a single-scene set-up and lone actor (Tom Hardy), Locke sounds brainnumbingly boring on paper, but in reality is one of the most gripping films of the year. The action takes place on a night-time drive, with protagonist Ivan Locke making calls on his handsfree phone. And that’s it. No other actors apart from the voices we hear, just Locke, desperately trying to sort out an unholy mess that he’s created.
Million Dollar Arm Deutsch, Español Drama, 124 mins Director: Craig Gillespie Starring: Jon Hamm, Aasif Mandvi, Alan Arkin
PG
This true-life and warm-hearted sports drama stars Hamm as a sports agent who, after watching Britain’s Got Talent and a game of cricket, comes up with an innovative idea to find new baseball pitching talent. How? Well, bearing in mind his unlikely inspirations, he plans a pitching contest for Indian cricketers. 13
movies
Only Lovers Left Alive Drama, 123 mins 15 Director: Jim Jarmusch Starring: Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska
It’s fair to say that director Jim Jarmusch is something of an acquired taste. To fans, he’s famed for his languid style and mesmerising longueurs, while detractors point to the fact that very little seems to happen in his films. To be fair, his detractors have a point, but as this film illustrates, nobody can do hypnotic and haunting quite like Jarmusch. It stars Hiddleston and Swinton as Adam and Eve, a pair of estranged vampire lovers whose affair has lasted centuries. Fearing Adam may be in danger, Eve returns to Detroit to help pull him out of his vaguely vampirish depression. Painterly and laconic, with two standout performances from the leads, Only Lovers Left Alive is flecked with the idiosyncratic touch of its maverick director.
Mr. Peabody & Sherman
日本語, Français, Deutsch Animation, 92 mins Director: Rob Minkoff Voices of: Ty Burrell, Max Charles, Stephen Colbert
Animated fun involving a genius dog called Mr. Peabody and his adopted son Sherman. Having invented time travel, Mr. Peabody takes Sherman to see history, but when Sherman breaks time-travel rules, all hell breaks loose.
Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie
A New York Winter’s Tale U
Fantasy, 118 mins Director: Akiva Goldsman Starring: Colin Farrell, Russell Crowe, Jessica Brown Findlay
12
Set in a mythic New York, this fantastical romance stars Farrell as a burglar who tries to rob a mansion, only to fall in love with the beautiful, but doomed, woman (Findlay) he meets inside.
Comedy, 94 mins Director: Ben Kellett Starring: Brendan O’Carroll, Jennifer Gibney, Sorcha Cusack
15
If anything could be called critic-proof, then Mrs Brown’s Boys is it. On TV, the critics don’t like it, but at the cinema they loathe it. Not a problem for the irrepressible Mrs Brown. This tale of her versus the moneymen packed them in at the cinemas, and a sequel is now planned.
Planes: Fire & Rescue
日本語, Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Animation, 84 mins U Director: Roberts Gannaway Voices of: Dane Cook, Ed Harris, Julie Bowen
Animated antics featuring the return of the winged heroes of Planes. When famous air racer Dusty learns that his engine is damaged and he may never race again, he is launched into the world of aerial firefighting. His first job? Battling a massive wildfire.

movies Rebel Without a Cause Classic, 108 mins PG Director: Nicholas Ray Starring: James Dean, Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo
The 1955 film that launched a billion scowls and made James Dean an icon of teen angst retains its classic power. Dean plays Jim Stark, a troubled teen who arrives in town, makes new friends – and a fair few enemies to boot. Cue flick-knife fights, deadly games of chicken and plenty of gratuitous collar upturning.
Starred Up
RoboCop
Drama, 106 mins Director: David Mackenzie Starring: Jack O’Connell, Rupert Friend, Ben Mendelsohn
日本語, Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Action, 117 mins 12 Director: José Padilha Starring: Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton
Jack O’Connell plays Eric, a young offender so violent he has been ‘starred up’, i.e. moved to an adult prison. His only chance of survival is to make amends with his father, who is also inside but who Eric hasn’t seen since he was five. Beatings and nasty shower-room experiences make Starred Up far from an easy watch, but if you’re after a provocative and challenging film, it’s just the ticket.
A cast that includes Gary Oldman and Samuel L Jackson takes on this classic sci-fi tale. When a cop is maimed by a car bomb, a scientist bionically revives him. However, as RoboCop soon discovers, it’s not easy being a machine.
Rio 2 Animation, 101 mins U Director: Carlos Saldanha Voices of: Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, Jemaine Clement
For this sequel to the kids’ animated favourite, we rejoin macaw Blu as he’s sent to the Amazon with his new family – and then is stunned to encounter the long-lost tribe of his beloved Jewel. There’s plenty of fun to be had, including a mid-air game of football and a gobsmacking song-anddance routine.
Tammy Comedy, 97 mins 15 Directors: Ben Falcone, Melissa McCarthy Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Susan Sarandon, Kathy Bates
Fresh from the success of Bridesmaids and The Heat, the brilliant Melissa McCarthy stars in this hilarious tale of the hapless Tammy, who loses her job and decides to go on a road trip. However, it starts badly as she’s joined by her grandma – who can seriously cramp a girl’s style. 16

This animated Peter Pan spin-off is aimed squarely at kids and finds the eponymous fairy springing into action when Zarina steals Pixie Hollow’s all-important Blue Pixie Dust – then flies away to join forces with the pirates of Skull Rock.
movies Transformers: Age of Extinction 日本語, Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Action, 165 mins Director: Michael Bay Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer
12
Okay, so the plot is only marginally less complicated than trying to work out one of the actual toys, and the nonstop action scenes may well give you a migraine. But if you want to see enormous, battling robots and concerned-but-gorgeous-looking humans (and then some more enormous, battling robots) this fourth instalment in the series delivers on all fronts.
X-Men: Days of Future Past Action, 131 mins 12 Director: Bryan Singer Starring: Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman
Titanic Classic, 195 mins 12 Director: James Cameron Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Billy Zane, Kate Winslet
Spoiler: the ship sinks at the end. But even knowing how it turns out (well, broadly speaking) does nothing to dull the power of this epic disaster movie. It made megastars of Winslet and DiCaprio, but the real draw is the faithfully reproduced Titanic, making the final scenes of the stricken ship slipping beneath the ocean even more heart-rending.
With the original and best X-Men director Bryan Singer on board, and a mouthwatering cast including Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender, you can be sure this latest instalment (plot: the X-Men send Wolverine to the past. Things explode) is one of the best of the franchise.

There’s lots of action and guns in this Hindi adventure set in the turmoil of 1970s Calcutta. Taking advantage of the unrest, two boys become gun couriers and then, thanks to their ruthlessness, the city’s most powerful bandits.

David Beckham Into the Unknown 91 mins
What did Becks do to mark his retirement? Despite Victoria’s concerns (‘Why can’t you ‘find yourself’ at home?’) he rounded up three mates and their motorbikes to join him on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure deep into the wilds of the Amazon – all of which makes for a touching and intimate look at the global superstar.
The Class of ‘92 97 mins
12
The Class of ‘92 are David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville and Paul Scholes, the six Manchester United players who formed the backbone of the treble-winning team of 1998/99. This feature-length documentary details their meteoric rise and features interviews with all six.
I Am Divine 15
90 mins
‘Two people in the same body’ was how drag icon Divine was often described. The story of how the unremarkable Glenn Milstead transformed himself into the utterly outrageous and deliberately offensive acting and singing phenomenon Divine provides the backbone to this warmly received feature-length documentary. Perhaps his most important relationship was with director John Waters, a kindred spirit who styled himself the ‘pope of trash’ and gave Divine his most memorable (or at least his most mainstream) role, in 1988’s Hairspray. The film includes footage and extensive interview with Waters and other cast members, as well as with Divine’s mother.

In this four-minute animation, Sir Richard Branson summarises what we’re doing to reduce our environmental impact and to support communities in need. It features thirsty microbes, dancing horses, baby orangutans and pilots dressed in plastic bottles... Find out how you can do your bit too! 22
Fab and fashionable at… how old? Awardwinning director Sue Bourne explores the art of ageing (dis)gracefully in this documentary. Her subjects boast an average age of 80, yet all still look amazing. It’s not botox or plastic surgery that keeps them looking young but a desire to live life to its fullest, most obvioulsy through their clothes. They dress with a style and panache that is about more than trends or labels, and witnessing them in full flow – conversational and sartorial – is a delight.

Documentaries Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon 86 mins
15
Mike ‘Austin Powers’ Myers directs this documentary about Hollywood insider Shep Gordon. After moving to Los Angeles straight out of college, Shep befriended Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix suggested he move into management, which he promptly did, helping to make a star of the thenunknown Alice Cooper. Shep subsequently built up a coterie of clients, had a string of highprofile affairs and almost singlehandedly started the trend for celebrity chefs. Throughout, he has retained a reputation for being one of the nicest guys in the business, something that shines through in Myers’ film.
The World’s War: Forgotten Soldiers of Empire 50 mins
Made for the BBC’s commemoration of the centenary of World War I, this documentary focuses on the millions of Indian, African and Asian men who fought and died alongside white European troops. Indian sepoys, naiks and havildars were among the first to experience the horrors of the trenches, while West African soldiers made similar sacrifices. As presenter David Olusoga points out, many were taken from their homes in chains to join the fight for ‘liberty and civilisation’. Such rank hypocrisy provides food for thought.
Years of Living Dangerously 60 mins per episode
The aim of this James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger-produced documentary series is as simple as it is clear: it wants you to think about climate change. How? By using movie stars to sound the alarm bells in the hope that you’ll listen. Consider it a cynical approach if you will, but the acclaimed results speak for themselves, as Harrison Ford explores deforestation in Indonesia, Don Cheadle reports on droughts in Texas, and Schwarzenegger visits firefighters on the frontline, all of them bringing star wattage, a surprising amount of journalistic rigour, and, in Ford’s case, a Jeremy Paxman-like interview technique to what is a very pressing subject. As one critic has pointed out, the shows have been made like Hollywood movies, it’s just that unlike most movies, nobody knows how this one ends. 23

Comedy The Trip to Italy 30 mins
In 2010’s The Trip, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon played (ever so slightly) fictionalised versions of themselves on a ‘restaurant tour’ of the north of England. With pant-wettingly funny celebrity impersonations taking care of the laughs, and the evolving nature of their relationship providing a more characterful dimension, it was a hit – such a big hit that a sequel was inevitable. Here, in a classic case of ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’, the winning formula is repeated, except in Italy, where la dolce vita gives our two heroes even more of an excuse to bicker and preen in increasingly hilarious fashion – and, yes, those uncannily accurate and unerringly hilarious impressions are still very much a part of the show.

Easy connections to the rest of the world Visit friends or take a UK break somewhere new. Or connect with our worldwide destinations between more UK cities. Connecting at London Heathrow is as easy as ABC, with simple bus transfers between terminals. To find out more and book a Little Red flight, visit www.virginatlantic.com
DVT is more likely to strike if you are immobile for a long time (post-operative patients are at risk), so long-haul flyers should take the following precautions… — Drink lots of fluid and avoid excess alcohol. — Keep your circulation going during the flight by wiggling your toes and ankles, taking a walk up and down the aisle if possible. — Check out the Virgin health video for further health tips.

Use your
mobile phone So, you’re on a connected flight – how exciting! But what does that mean? It means you can use your own mobile phone, on an aircraft!
AeroMobile is the network you’ll roam on inflight, just like you’ll roam on a foreign network when you’re overseas. It is a registered mobile phone operator; the only difference is they operate at 37,000ft.
The bottom line is you’ll be billed by your mobile operator, so whatever they charge you for roaming, typically in the ‘rest of the world’ category, is what you’ll pay. You will usually receive a free text from your home operator with pricing information.
— A mid-Atlantic text to your friend in London travels 455,804km over satellite networks, and would typically reach them in less than 30 seconds. That’s the same as 11 trips around the world in just half a minute!
To celebrate the fact that you need never be incommunicado again, and that being a geek is cool, here are some nerdy facts about our inflight connectivity service that might surprise you!
— So far this year Virgin Atlantic passengers have sent over a quarter of a million texts to friends, family and colleagues from 37,000ft.
— Did you know that AeroMobile has agreements with over 220 operators around the world, so even if you’re not from the UK you can probably use the service.
They also operate over satellites, which is a bit cooler than mobile phone masts.
How to use WiFi on connected flights: On certain aircraft, not only can you use your mobile phone to call or text but you can also wirelessly connect your portable devices to our WiFi service. After takeoff, crew will advise if your aircraft is WiFi enabled, so listen out for announcements.
AEROMOBILE AD_artwork_TP2.indd 1-2
— Sending an email to your boss from 37,000ft only takes a few seconds longer than being in the office – they’ll never know the difference! — The average cost of sending a text from onboard is just 45p.

2. 3. 4. 5.
Remember to switch your phone off for take-off and landing. After take-off (above 6,000 metres) the AeroMobile service will become available.
Switch your phone on, making sure ‘Flight mode’ is off and ‘Roaming’ is on.
If your phone doesn’t automatically connect to the AeroMobile network, manually select AeroMobile in Settings/Carrier or Mobile Networks.
Once connected you’ll receive a welcome text from AeroMobile. It’s likely you’ll receive a text from your home mobile operator with pricing information.
You can now use your mobile phone to call, text, email and surf the internet. Usage is billed by your home phone operator and international roaming rates apply.
Be aware that when using the data roaming services your network operator’s standard roaming charges will apply.

sustainability
Our Change is in the Air sustainability strategy includes our comprehensive environmental and community investment programmes. On environment first and foremost this means
significantly improving our aircraft fuel and carbon efficiency by using new aircraft and other technologies. We’re also playing our part in driving the commercial uptake of low carbon aviation fuels through our award winning sustainable fuels programme. On the ground, we focus on better managing our energy, vehicles, water and waste, as well as engaging our designers, buyers and suppliers on improved, more sustainable supply chain practices. We’re also actively working with the industry and government to reduce our noise footprint.
On community investment our partnership
with Free The Children means our international development programme is delivering real, measurable, sustainable change in our funded overseas communities. Through Free The Children’s school programme ‘We Act’, we also inspire young people across the UK to get involved and become a part of the change that they want to see in the world. All of this is made possible through your generous Change for Children donations, and as a result of our staff fundraising.
We’ve just released our latest annual Change is in the Air sustainability report. It’s a progress update of our key initiatives to date. Please visit www.virgin-atlantic.com/changeisintheair for more details. Here are a few highlights…
Environment
Community
We’re really pleased that our direct emissions shrank last year compared with 2012, and are lower than our base year, 2007. In 2013, the carbon footprint from flying our aircraft was 4.8 million tonnes of CO₂e.
Our international development projects with Free The Children focus on delivering real, longterm improvements on social and environmental issues in the developing world.
Our number one environmental priority is for our aircraft to be as carbon efficient as possible. Our CO₂ emissions per passenger kilometre have decreased to 91.3g. We’ve set ourselves a target of reducing our aircraft CO₂ emissions by 30% per revenue tonne kilometre between 2007 and 2020. We’ve introduced all sorts of initiatives to make sure we’ll achieve this goal.
Free The Children’s model began with the goal of providing education, but it became so much more. Today, the five core pillars of ‘Adopt a Village’ are:
We have a rolling programme to replace older aircraft with new, more efficient models. We’re really excited to have just taken delivery of our first Boeing 787-9. It will be about 21% more efficient per trip than similar sized aircraft in our fleet. It will have a 60% smaller noise footprint too. We’re also developing a pioneering low carbon fuel with our partner LanzaTech. This will have about 60% less life cycle CO₂ emissions than conventional jet fuel and will meet the most stringent environmental, social and economic standards.
About Free The Children Free The Children’s mission is to create a world where all young people are free to achieve their full potential as agents of change. They couldn’t have a better blueprint for success. The organisation was founded by Craig Kielburger, when in 1995 he gathered 11 school friends to begin fighting against child labour. He was 12 years old. Today, Free The Children is an international charity and educational partner, with more than 1.7 million youth involved in its innovative education and development programmes in 45 countries. Thanks to your generous on-board Change for Children collections and our staff fundraising efforts, we’re able to directly support eight villages in Kenya, China, India and Ghana.
Working alongside families living in poor, rural and remote areas, Free The Children provides the support and skills to help villagers become self-sufficient within five to six years. Crucially, the communities themselves are involved from the outset in defining and delivering the change they want in their villages, so it has long-lasting, meaningful results. This means the communities involved won’t need to rely on hand-outs in the long term. To date, Free The Children has built over 650 schools, which educate more than 55,000 children every day. At the same time, they provide clean water, healthcare and sanitation to one million people around the world.
You can help too! To help save lives and support our school programme, please place any loose change or foreign currency in the Change for Children envelope and hand it to a cabin crew member. To keep your donation safe, please don’t leave it in your seat pocket. Your donation will support international community development and help inspire young people in the UK to take action at a global or local level. Thank you!
Watch our Change is in the Air animation on board! Check out this short video in the A-Z listing in the TV section. Narrated by Sir Richard Branson, the animation is a whistle-stop tour of our sustainability programme and includes thirsty microbes, dancing horses, baby orangutans and pilots dressed in plastic bottles!
