Only a sailor can describe the emotions one feels when first arriving in a port, especially when hoping to find a warm welcome, a safe harbor, and the camaraderie of other sailors when anchoring for the night.

The Port of Gustavia will open its arms to sailors from around the world throughout 2012. From frequent guests to occasional visitors, these sailors play an important role in the economy of the island. and the port is continually evolving, in order to provide them with improved docks and mooring facilities, while continuing to maintain a high level of security and safety. For yachts, the dock in front of the Hôtel de la Collectivité will provide additional space for boats with a draft up to five meters. The inner harbor will be dredged to deepen the channel to five and a half meters, and at the commercial port, we are completing a project to reinforce the existing dock, increase storage capacity, and improve security for the unloading of oil tankers.

The reputation of the Port de Gustavia is built on the energy and commitment of its staff, which ensures that everything runs smoothly. l'année 2011 a été riche en événements nautiques entre autres. Elle nous a également permis d'aller encore plus loin dans la qualité d'accueil pour les gens de mer. de nouvelles infrastructures pour les usagers ont été créées et une consolidation de celles du port de commerce a été réalisée.

du coté administratif, notre « règlement de Police du Port » a été adapté à la situation d'aujourd'hui. aussi, pour la première fois dans un port de plaisance, tout capitaine a la possibilité d’effectuer les formalités d'entrée ou de sortie de son navire via internet et ce 24 heures à l'avance. déjà plusieurs ports dans le monde souhaitent adopter ce système.

2011 was a busy year in terms of the numerous events at the port, allowing us to deepen the quality of our services for all of our guests, from improvements to the yacht docks to increasing our capacity and efficiency at the commercial port.

administratively, our “Port Police regulations” were adapted to meet our current needs. also, we are the first yacht port to allow captains to take care of entry and departure clearance via the Internet and up to 24 hours in advance. There are already other ports around the world interested in adopting this system.

le navire doit être à jour de ses documents (papiers d’identification du navire et assurances). assurez-vous que toutes les personnes à bord sont munies des pièces d’identité nécessaires pour entrer sur le territoire de saint barthélemy. appeler la capitainerie par vhf canal 12 avant toute manœuvre. aucun navire de passage n'est autorisé à manœuvrer à quai et sur les bouées entre 17h00 et 07h00. tout navire qui entre et sort du port doit emprunter le chenal d'accès. la vitesse maximale autorisée dans toute la zone portuaire est de 3 noeuds. la baignade, la pêche et tous les sports nautiques doivent s'effectuer en dehors de la zone portuaire en respectant les règles propres à chaque activité. des bacs sélectifs sont prévus pour le tri des ordures ménagères (verres et canettes directement dans le bac prévu et autres déchets dans un sac en plastique et dans les bacs). les autres déchets doivent être déposés directement au service de propreté Public. les barbecues ne peuvent se faire sur les bateaux amarrés à quai et sur les bouées. Pensez à ne pas déranger votre voisin avec le bruit (musique, travaux...). il est strictement interdit de rejeter dans le port les eaux de fonds de cales. nous vous conseillons d’éteindre vos radars. seul, le capitaine ou un membre d’équipage sont autorisés à effectuer les formalités d’entrée ou de sortie du navire.

Please be sure that all persons aboard have all necessary documents (ie: passport and visas ...) required to enter the territory of St. Barthélemy.

Call the harbormaster's office on VHF channel 12 before making any maneuvers.

Boats are not authorized to maneuver at the dock or on buoys at night, between the hours of 5:00pm and 7:00am. all boats that enter and leave the port must use the access channel. The maximum speed allowed in the port zone is three knots.

Swimming, fishing, and all nautical sports must take place outside of the port zone, respecting the appropriate rules for each activity.

Household trash must be separated for recycling before left in the trash area on the dock (cans and bottles together in the container provided; all other trash in plastic bags then in containers provided). all other trash and large items must be taken directly to the incinerator in Public.

BBQs cannot be used aboard boats anchored at the dock or on buoys. Try not to disturb your neighbors with too much noise (music, hammering, etc.).

It is strictly forbidden to throw stagnant water from the hull of the boat into the harbor.

We recommend that you shut off your radar.

Only the captain of the vessel or a member of the crew is authorized to take care of entry and departure clearances.

Ecumant les vagues à bord d’un petit skiff fringant, nous nous dirigeons vers le sycara v. ce magnifique yacht motorisé semble tout droit sorti des mers profondes. la pureté de ses lignes élancées, le blanc immaculé de ses ponts, le bleu profond de sa coque effilée, jusqu’au surlignage bordeaux de sa ligne de flottaison, tout contribue à en faire le plus racé des bateaux de plaisance. À l’élégance s’ajoute à la fois puissance et mystère. sycara v s’étire sur 68 m (223’) et fut construit par nobiskrug en 2010 avec un décor intérieur conçu par l’australien craig beale.

En entrant dans le salon, le visiteur est frappé tout d’abord par les immenses baies vitrées offrant des vues imprenables de l’île de st barth et donnant l’impression que le yacht embrasse littéralement la mer. Built in 2010 by nobiskrug with an interior designed by australian Craig Beale, this beautiful 223’ (68m) motor yacht has an elegance that evokes both mystery and power. entering the living room, the first thing you notice are the oversized windows, that provide great views of the island of St Barth and make it feel as if the yacht is literally embracing the sea. le chef, damian “dano” higgins, originaire d’australie, nous raconte que les invités dînent souvent à bord du sycara v. “Il faut présenter de bons menus et connaître les goûts de ses clients,” explique ce vétéran des cuisines de yacht. “Ce matin j’ai trouvé cinq vivaneaux frais. J’adore utiliser des produits frais de saison, comme des fruits de la passion pour faire un dessert.

J’aime profiter de tout ce que l’on trouve ici, qui est si différent des produits de la Méditerranée.” défenseur des produits locaux, higgins se vante: “Je n’ai jamais servi à un client un poisson congelé. Ce n’est pas mon style. Je me souviens d’avoir rapporté un jour au bateau un thon grand comme ça …. Quant au vivaneau, il faut laisser parler le poisson, bien cuisiné il n’a pas besoin d’une sauce compliquée,

un simple zeste de citron mais rien qui masque le goût. Il faut retrouver la saveur de la mer non de la sauce.” de retour au salon nous rejoignons le propriétaire, Mr c pour l’équipage et les amis : “J’adore le processus de dessiner un bateau. Je prévois toujours en imagination exactement ce que je veux, et j’adore collaborer avec les meilleurs chantiers,” déclare-t-il. le sycara v est sans aucun doute un exemple de travail bien fait. le bois poli de châtaignier et de noyer rehaussé de touches de marbre et d’onyx souligne l’élégance de l’intérieur, équipé d’un bar spectaculaire en verre bleu où nous sirotons des verres de vin ou de Perrier pendant que le crépuscule enveloppe le yacht.

Chef damian “dano” Higgins hails from australia and notes that the owners and guests often dine aboard Sycara V. “It’s all about good food and what the client wants,” says this veteran of yacht galleys. “I got five fresh snapper this morning and like to use fresh, seasonal produce, such as a passion fruit dessert. I like to experience what they have here, which is different from what you find in the Mediterranean.” a champion of local products, Higgins boasts: “I have never served a piece of frozen fish to a client, I don’t believe in it. I remember once coming back to the boat with a tuna so big…. as for the red snapper, you let the fish speak for itself, do it right and it doesn’t need to be too

dressed up, just a little zest but not too overwhelming. you want to taste the ocean, not the sauce.”

Back in the living room we sit down with the owner, whom friends and staff refer to as Mr. C: “I love the process of designing boats, and have what I want in my mind, and I like to work with the shipyards that do the best job,” he says. Sycara V is certainly a perfect example of a job well done, with beautiful polished chestnut and walnut wood with accents of marble and onyx setting the tone for an elegant interior. and we enjoy glasses of wine and Perrier at a stunning blue glass bar, as evening envelops the yacht.

En repartant vers le quai, nous passons à côté du sycara iv, un fantail cruiser de 46m (151') construit par burger et conçu dans le style art déco luxurieux des années 30, où le bois domine—à l’intérieur comme à l’extérieur. “J’avais ce bateau en tête depuis très longtemps et je tenais absolument à le construire,” déclare le propriétaire, qui a collaboré avec l’architecte naval bruce King, le dessinateur Ken freivokh, et le directeur de projet steve narkawicz pour réaliser ce yacht familial. “Nous partons de la Statue de la Liberté pour remonter le fleuve Hudson jusqu’à Troy et de là nous descendons le canal Erié et le canal Wellington, pour arriver au lac Ontario. C’est la solution idéale pour voir l’Amérique à cinq à l’heure.”

On the way back to the dock we zip past Sycara IV, a Burger 151' (46m) Fantail Cruiser designed in luxurious 1930s art deco style, with wood as a main feature of the design— inside and out. “I had this boat on my mind for a long time, and had to build it,” says the owner, who collaborated with naval architect Bruce King, designer Ken Freivokh, and project manager Steve narkawicz on this family-oriented yacht. “We sail from the Statue of Liberty right up the Hudson river to Troy then on to the erie Canal, Wellington Canal, and Lake Ontario. It’s a great way to see america at five miles an hour.”

Nous passons Noël ici et c’est l’endroit le plus sécuritaire que nous visitons. L’équipage des deux yachts est excellent” affirme-t-il, en exprimant son appréciation des capitaines et de tout le personnel. “C’est un groupe international qui parle plusieurs langues. Je pense que c’est important d’offrir de bonnes conditions de vie à l’équipage et qu’ils soient fiers de « leur bateau ». S’ils sont heureux, tout le monde est heureux.”n

When asked how much time he spends in St Barth, the owner’s reply is immediate: “not enough! When I come here I am the most relaxed I ever am, and I love that you can walk anywhere any time. We come at Christmas and it’s the safest place we ever go. I also have a great crew on both boats,” he says, offering kudos to his captains and their entire staff. “They are an international group and speak lots of languages. I think it’s important for the crew to have good living conditions, and ‘boat pride,’ if they are happy, everyone is happy.”n

vainqueur du st barth bucket en 2009, Meteor est une magnifique goélette de 52 mètres, à gréement aurique, construite par royal huisman et lancée en 2007. En contraste avec le gréement traditionnel, la technologie est de pointe, alors que l’architecture élégante est de gerard dykstra & Partners et de John g. alden, avec un décor intérieur très chic conçu par John Munford design. le capitaine dean Maggio tenait la barre lorsque Meteor a remporté la victoire au bucket de 2009, en gagnant les courses du premier et du troisième jour pour enregistrer la meilleure performance dans l’ensemble : “J’ai débuté avec Meteor dès sa conception en 2004 en tant que directeur de projet,” explique Maggio. “De la signature du contrat

jusqu’à la fin du projet j’étais le représentant du propriétaire, supervisant tous les aspects de la construction. C’était un projet magnifique et un véritable plaisir de travailler avec les chantiers Royal Huisman.”

En plus de ses trois participations à la st barth bucket, Maggio a concouru sur Meteor dans la newport bucket, la coupe super Yacht de Palma, et la ioro super Yacht cup.

“C’est un voilier de rêve,” déclare-t-il. “A plus de 17 noeuds il est pratiquement imbattable. En croisière normale, l’équipage est de neuf personnes à plein temps. Pour les courses, nous sommes 19.” au cours de la bucket de 2011, Jimmy buffett faisait partie de l’équipage, prenant son tour à la barre.

Winner of the St Barth Bucket in 2009, Meteor is a magnificent 170’ (52 meter) gaff-rigged schooner built by royal Huisman and launched in 2007. The traditional rig is offset by the latest in modern technology, while the handsome architecture is by Gerard dykstra & Partners and John G. alden, with stylish interiors by John Munford design.

Meteor sailed to victory during the 2009 Bucket with captain dean Maggio at the helm, winning the first and third days’ races, and putting in the best overall performance: “I started with Meteor from her inception in 2004 as the project manager,” he notes. “I was the owner’s rep from

the time we signed the contract until completion, overseeing every aspect of the build. It was a great project. royal Huisman is a great shipyard to work with.”

In addition to three appearances in the St Barth Bucket, Maggio has also raced with Meteor in the newport Bucket, the Palma Super yacht Cup, and the Ioro Super yacht Cup. “She sails like a dream,” he confirms. “anything above 17 knots and she's hard to beat. We normally cruise with a full-time crew of nine. during races that number increases to 19.” and during the 2011 Bucket, that crew included sailor/songwriter Jimmy Buffett taking his turn at the helm.

Il nous faut un peu plus de vent et de vent de travers pour atteindre les meilleurs résultats. Cela dit, nous nous sommes très bien amusés et nous nous réjouissons de revenir concourir l’année prochaine. C’est la plus belle régate de superyachts du monde.”

The 2011 Bucket was a bit of a challenge for Meteor: “as always, it was a great regatta,” says Maggio. “They get better every year. Unfortunately for us the wind direction created a bit too much up wind work, which is Meteor's achilles heel. a lot of the course marks were up wind, which means a lot of tacking for us. Unfortunately we don’t go up wind well. We need slightly more breeze and a little more reaching for better results. nevertheless we had a great time and are looking forward to returning for next year’s event. It's the best super-yacht regatta in the world.”

St Barth est la destination préférée du propriétaire,” précise Maggio, en notant que dès l’arrivée à st barth il se procure toujours plusieurs copies de harbour Magazine : “Joyeux 15ème anniversaire, nous sommes fiers de paraître dans le magazine cette année. Bonne continuation!”. n

In terms of Meteor’s overall design, Maggio comments: “Her long traditional keel makes her a very comfortable boat on long passages, particularly off the wind. She also has all carbon rigs and carbon standing rigging.

These help with her overall stability by reducing the weight aloft. The gaff is great for off the wind sailing.”

The interiors of the three cabins are wrapped in warm mahogany, and the artwork reflects the owner’s passion for the sea.

While Meteor appears in St Barth in time for the Bucket, home base is newport, rI, in the summer.

“Winter time we generally bounce around the Caribbean.

St Barth is the owner’s favorite spot,” says Maggio, who notes that he always picks up a few copies of Harbour Magazine upon arrival in St Barth: “Happy 15th, we’re proud to be a part of the magazine this year. Keep up the good work!”. n

Ses yeux suivent le spectateur partout dans la pièce.”

“St Barth has a special charm,” says Sir Michael Smurfit, whose 49.9 m (163.71 ft) custom Codecasa-built yacht, Lady ann Magee, is a frequent visitor to the Port of Gustavia. Sir Michael is based in Monaco, where he is the honorary Irish consul, but spends the better part of January through March in St Barth. “I like the quaint architecture with the red roofs, and we have made friends here over the years,” says Smurfit, who first came to the island 25 years ago on a charter.

“We were cruising the Virgin Islands.

Then after a span of 10 years, we started coming back every year. The island is a charming place, with a special atmosphere, good restaurants, and nightlife if you want it. and the beaches are fabulous”.

named for Sir Michael’s mother, Lady ann Magee is warmly decorated, with the feel of a comfortably elegant english—or in this case Irish—country house, adorned with art from Smurfit’s large collection. “every yacht owner has an individual style,” he says. “Mine reflects my Irish roots and all of my homes have a similar feel.” a portrait of Lady ann herself adorns the dining room: “It was painted from a black and white photograph of my mother at the time of her wedding,” Smurfit recalls.

“It took two years to build the boat and two and a half years to paint her portrait as they had to get the eyes right. They follow you around the room.”

le yacht traverse régulièrement l’atlantique, parfois en location, avec son équipage de 12 personnes sous la direction de deux capitaines, roger Mills et daniel sweet. la table de la salle à manger accueille souvent des membres de la famille et des amis, y compris le Prince albert de Monaco qui a fêté son anniversaire à bord. les chefs préparent des repas très variés : “J’aime la raclette et la fondue,” avoue sir Michael “ainsi qu’une bonne sole de Douvres si nous arrivons à en trouver. Chaque soir, le menu s'articule autour d'un thème différent.” sir Michael apprécie l’environnement naturel de saint barth. il s’inquiète pourtant : “Le risque de surdéveloppement existe toujours. Il faudra faire très attention à la façon d’exploiter ce petit paradis. Pour le moment, Saint Barth représente la crème de la crème.” il souhaiterait que les autorités portuaires arrivent à mieux contrôler la houle qui oblige les yachts à quitter le quai par moments. selon lui, “cela contribuerait à rendre ce paradis tropical encore plus parfait!”. n

With a crew of 12 including two captains, roger Mills and daniel Sweet, the yacht crosses the atlantic frequently and does some charters. The dining room is often set for meals with family and friends, including Prince albert of Monaco who celebrated his birthday aboard. The chefs prepare a wide range of menus: “I like raclette and fondue,” says Smurfit, “and a good dover sole if we can find it. every night has a different theme in terms of the food.”

Smurfit is a fan of the natural environment in St Barth, but warns: “There is always the danger of overdevelopment. They have to be very careful how they exploit this little paradise. For now, St Barth is the top of the top end.” He does hope the port can do something to reduce the swells that have caused the yachts to desert the docks on occasion. In his words, "That would help make this tropical paradise even better!". n

décrocher la lune. tout le monde en rêve, mais richard duchossois l’a réalisé trois fois, car il a baptisé chacun de ses merveilleux yachts feadship « blue Moon ». Emile bootsma, son capitaine depuis 15 ans, est venu à st barth sur chacun des trois. le dernier en date, long de 60 mètres et dont le fabuleux décor intérieur a été conçu par donald starkey, offre aux propriétaires plus d’espace vital et une plus grande autonomie de croisière que les précédents. alors que l’été duchossois et sa famille se plaisent à changer souvent de cap, l’hiver les ramène le plus souvent vers leur port préféré, st barth. harbour Magazine a eu le plaisir de rencontrer le propriétaire et le capitaine: Monsieur Duchossois, qu’est-ce qui vous a attiré dans notre île à l’origine?

St Barth est connu depuis longtemps comme le joyau de la Caraïbe et lorsque j’ai loué un yacht pour la première fois vers la fin des années 80 c’était la première île que je voulais découvrir. Je n’ai pas été déçu à ce moment-là et aujourd’hui encore St Barth demeure l’une de mes destinations préférées dans les îles antillaises.

Quel est l’aspect de l’île qui vous plaît le plus?

Cette île offre un mélange parfait d’élégance européenne et de calme tropical—aucune autre île ne lui ressemble. Les gens sont accueillants, les plages sont immaculées et l’on y trouve les plus belles boutiques et les meilleurs restaurants de toute la Caraïbe … c’est pour cela qu’il nous fait toujours plaisir de revenir!

Pendant combien de temps est-ce que votre yacht reste à St Barth chaque hiver?

Cela varie d’une année à l’autre en fonction de nos projets, mais en moyenne nous passons environ quatre semaines par an ici.

not just once in a blue moon, but in this case three times, as owner richard duchossois has had three beautiful Feadship yachts called Blue Moon. emile Bootsma has been his captain for 15 years, and traveled to Saint Barth on all three. The current model is 198’ long with stunning interior design by donald Starkey, offering the owners more interior space and wider cruising options. although they spend the summers in various places, St Barth remains a favorite winter destination. Harbour chats with the owner and captain: Mr. Duchossois, what first brought you and the yacht to St Barth?

St Barth has long been known as the jewel of the Caribbean and when I chartered my first yacht in the late 80’s, this was one of the first places I wanted to see and experience. It is fair to say it didn’t disappoint me then, and it is still one of my favorite Caribbean destinations today.

What do you like best about the island?

The island has a wonderful blend of european sophistication mixed with Caribbean tranquility— there really is no other island like it. The people are friendly, the beaches are pristine and the shops and restaurants are by far the best in the Caribbean… that’s why we love coming back!

How much time does the yacht spend in St Barth each winter?

It varies from year to year depending on our program, but on average probably around four weeks a year.

What size is your crew, and is there a typical annual cruising schedule?

We have a full time crew of 14 and although we spend most of our winter in the Caribbean, our summers have been quite varied; we were in alaska in the summer of 2009 and we cruised the Great Lakes this past summer.

L’équipage comprend 14 personnes à plein temps et, même si nous passons la plus grande partie de l’hiver dans les Caraïbes, l’été nous changeons souvent de destination; l’été 2010 nous a trouvés en Alaska et cet été nous explorerons les Grands Lacs.

Qui est votre chef à bord et quelle sorte de repas sert-il ? Organisez-vous souvent des dîners et des fêtes pour les propriétaires et les invités?

A bord d’un yacht, la gastronomie fait partie intégrante de l’expérience totale, donc notre chef, David Cowcill, met à profit son expérience en restaurant afin de répondre à tous nos besoins, que ce soit un dîner formel où chaque plat est accompagné du vin qui convient, un simple barbecue en famille ou bien quelque chose d’intermédiaire.

Est-ce que les propriétaires du Blue Moon voudraient formuler un souhait particulier pour l’anniversaire de Harbour Magazine?

Harbour Magazine, illustré de photos exceptionnelles, est un excellent outil de promotion pour St Barth.

Les invités sont toujours fascinés, l’équipage retient le souffle et le capitaine doit respirer bien profondément, mais une fois le yacht amarré au quai Général de Gaulle, aussi bien l’équipage que les invités savent que leur récompense se trouvera dans l’accueil et la beauté que leur offrent à la fois Gustavia et toute l’île de St Barth. Que demander de plus ? Cette île nous ravit!n

Who is the chef and what kind of food is popular on board, are there often dinners and such for owners and guests? eating onboard is very much part of the yachting experience, so our chef, david Cowcill, is able to use his former restaurant experience to diversify his menus from the sophisticated five course meals with wine pairing to the more simple family style barbecues.

Does Blue Moon have a special anniversary wish for Harbour Magazine?

Harbour Magazine, with its stunning pictures does such a good job of promoting St Barth; we are always proud to have it on display in our guest cabins. So let me use this opportunity to congratulate you on your first 15 years of publishing and wish you the very best for the next 15 years!

Emile, what do you as captain like best about St Barth? In terms of the port/port staff/island in general…

The challenge of docking a 60 m yacht in the tiny port of Gustavia, in a strong crosswind, is always going to get your attention; the guests love it, the crew are biting their nails, and the captain has to take an extra deep breath, but once you are safely tied up to the General de Gaulle quay, the reward for crew and guests alike is all the hospitality and beauty that Gustavia and St Barth can offer… there is really not much more we can ask for, we love it here!n

admirateur de harbour Magazine qu’il propose aux invités sur son yacht, herb chambers, propriétaire d’Excellence iii, s'est fort aimablement prêté à l'interview que nous lui avons demandée. “J’ai lu un livre qui m’a beaucoup plu sur comment réussir en affaires qui s’appelle « À la recherche de l’excellence” explique herb chambers. “En 1989 j’ai baptisé mon premier yacht Excellence I, et cela lui allait très bien.”

Excellence iii, que l’on voit souvent dans le port de gustavia, est un magnifique yacht motorisé de 57,3 m (188 pieds) construit par abeking & rasmussen, qui a été lancé en 2001.

“I read a book which I loved called “In Search of excellence,” about success in business,” says Herb Chambers, owner of excellence III.” In 1989 I named my first yacht excellence I, and it seemed like a good fit.” excellence III, a frequent visitor to The Port of Gustavia, is a handsome 188' (57.3 meter) abeking & rasmussen motor yacht launched in 2001.

“I was born in Boston and always had an attraction to boats,” explains Chambers, who is one of the most successful car dealers in the US, with 47 dealerships selling everything from Smart Cars to Lamborghinis. a car aficionado, Chambers admits a fondness for Ferraris (“even though I don’t sell them,” he notes) and his favorite sports car is a McLaren F1: “I’ve had one for 15 years and drive it around Connecticut. The driver sits in the middle with a passenger on each side. The police are very curious.”

“Mon père, issu d’un milieu modeste, m’a emmené voir une expo de bateaux lorsque j’avais à peu près 12 ans et, chaque fois que je lui demandais quand il allait en acheter un, il me disait que peut-être l’année suivante.” finalement, à l’âge de 28 ans, chambers s’est jeté à l’eau en achetant un bateau à moteur de 9m15 (30 pieds), c’était le début d’une longue série.

“St Barth est un endroit unique,” s’exclame chambers, observant l’île par la vitre d’Excellence iii, confortablement ancrée au premier poste d’amarrage du quai.

“Cela m’a frappé pendant que nous approchions de l’île, tant de yachts magnifiques au même endroit, en route pour St Barth. Avant, nous naviguions dans d’autres régions de la Caraïbe mais tous me demandaient, “Quand est-ce que nous irons à St Barth?” Cette île attire tout le monde. Les boutiques sont fabuleuses, remplies des produits de luxe qui nous séduisent, et j’adore les gens d’ici. Ils sont toujours positifs.” les plaisirs de la table sont très appréciés à bord des yachts Excellence: “Nous prenons pratiquement tous nos repas à bord,” raconte chambers, et les menus varient du poisson frais acheté localement aux simples pâtes et sont servis accompagnés de vins fins trouvés sur place, des pinots noirs de préférence. les 78m33 (257 pieds) d’Excellence iv, le quatrième yacht de chambers, posaient problème. ray shore, le capitaine de chambers depuis plus de 20 ans, s’est rendu compte que le yacht était trop grand pour approcher de nantucket. “Ray m’a expliqué aussi que je ne pourrais pas l’amener à quai à St Barth. Je n’avais pas du tout pensé à ce problème,” avoue chambers. Par conséquent, Excellence v, le troisième yacht de chambers sera construit par abeking & rasmussen « sur mesure » pour st barth à près de 60 mètres (200 pieds), et se retrouvera certainement à quai.n

“My father, who had a working class background, took me to a boat show when I was 12 or so, and I kept asking him when he would buy one, and he always said maybe next year.” at the age of 28, Chambers finally put his toe in the water and bought a 30’ motorboat, and that was the beginning, from there it was one boat after the other.

“St Barth is such a special place,” says Chambers, looking out of the window of excellence III, comfortably anchored at the first berth on the dock. “It hit me when cruising in here, so many of these beautiful yachts in one place, just to come to St Barth. We used to cruise to other parts of the Caribbean but everybody kept asking, “When are we going to St Barth?” That’s the way everybody is with this place. The shopping is terrific with high-end things that we like, and I love the people here, they are always so upbeat.”

Chambers’ next boat, excellence IV, a 257footer, proved problematic. Captain ray Shore, who has been with Chambers for over 20 years, noted that the yacht was too big to sail into nantucket. “ray also said I couldn’t bring it to the dock in St Barth.

I never thought about not being able to be at the dock,” admits Chambers. as a result, excellence V, Chambers’ third abeking & rasmussen yacht, is the perfect “St Barth size” of almost 200’ (60 meters), and will most definitely be at the dock. dining aboard the excellence yachts is a favorite pastime: “We eat aboard 99% of the time,” says Chambers, with menus ranging from local fish to pasta, often served with Pinot noir wines. a fan of Harbour Magazine, Chambers adds, “We usually get three or four copies to put throughout the boat. We read and love anything about St Barth”.n

Parmi la concurrence il y avait des champions mondiaux et des athlètes olympiques tels que oliver backes, Misha heemskerk, Jean-christophe Mourniac et Emmanuel boulogne. la présence de 45 catamarans f18 sportifs à deux personnes fait de la saint barth cata cup (http: //www.stbarthcatacup.com) la régate la plus importante de la caraïbe pour cette catégorie. Elle a eu lieu du vendredi 19 au dimanche 21 novembre, 2010 (édition 2011 : du 16 au 20 novembre), sous l’égide de la st barth Multihulls association et du centre nautique de saint barth (cnsb).

Mourniac a pris la troisième place, accompagné de Kristoffer Johnsson, un amateur suédois qui a longtemps vécu à saint barth.

“Nos concurrents représentaient toute la gamme des meilleurs marins de cata du monde,” ajoute gary chu, vainqueur de la deuxième place. “C’est formidable de pouvoir se mesurer à cette qualité de marins et c’est toujours beau de naviguer autour de Saint Barth: le paysage, l’eau, les gens, c’est fabuleux.”n

“Fantastic sailing, fantastic people, and the most fun I’ve ever had,” says Casey.

“The C2 boat performed very well. The conditions really suited our boat, with the high wind and waves. Our teamwork makes us faster, although this boat is fast in all conditions. We were in front most of the time looking back at the fleet with their spinnakers unfurled, and saying ‘what a view’!”

Casey and Tebo pulled out all the stops to beat the heady competition. Mourniac took third place with teammate Kristoffer Johnsson, a Swedish amateur sailor who lived in St Barth for many years. “In terms of competitors, the field definitely had a cross-section of the world’s best cat sailors,” adds second-place winner Gary Chu. “The opportunity to race against that caliber of sailors is great, and St Barth is an awesome place to sail: the scenery, the water, the people.”n

There’s no better place to celebrate new year’s eve than St Barth, where a regatta on december 31 attracts boats of all sizes, and sailors from around the world. The 2010 new year’s eve regatta saw 18 sailboats facing uncertain weather conditions with gusty winds up to 25 knots and waves as high as six feet.

les voiles remplies de vent, ghost, un voilier de 122 pieds à coque argentée tout carbone, conçu par luca brenta pour le propriétaire arne glimscher, a remporté le premier prix. “Pour nous la course était excellente, vraiment superbe,” déclare Mike hutchinson, le skipper anglais de ghost. “On souriait tous. Ghost se manie très bien, le propriétaire est très sympathique et le programme est intéressant,”. glimscher a reçu le premier prix, une montre cartier, grâce au sponsor Jean-Marc gréaux. le nom de ghost sera inscrit sur le trophée perpétuel qui reste exposé dans le port. ghost a enregistré le parcours le plus rapide autour de l’île en 1 heure, 51 minutes, 12 secondes, arrivant 20 minutes derrière le record d’1 heure, 32 minutes, 7 secondes établi en 2004 par visione, un voilier de 147 pieds. donald tofias est arrivé premier dans la classe W à bord de son voilier de 76 pieds White Wings. la classe 1, pour les bateaux de 30 à 50 pieds, a vu une lutte acharnée entre deux voiliers locaux de 34 pieds: speedy nemo de raymond Magras et Maelia de raphael Magras qui sont arrivés en première et deuxième place respectivement à une minute d’intervalle. Phaedo, un catamaran orange vif, seul multicoque de la course, a gagné dans la classe 4.

“Quelle belle façon de passer le dernier jour de 2010,” déclare Mark del giudice, directeur de la marina de forty 1° north à newport, ri, venu aider le st barth Yacht club et le Port de gustavia à organiser la course. a la cérémonie de remise des prix, le champagne coulait à flots et les propriétaires et skippers se disaient ‘à l’an prochain,’ en rêvant peut-être de commencer l’an 2012 à toutes voiles en participant à la régate du 31 décembre.n

With plenty of wind in its sails, the 122’ Ghost, an all-carbon, silver-hulled yacht designed by Luca Brenta for owner arne Glimscher, took top honors. “We had a great race, really superb,” says english skipper Mike Hutchinson. “We all had grins on our faces. Ghost is a boat that sails well, has a great owner, and an interesting program.” Glimscher won the top prize of a Cartier watch, sponsored

by Jean-Marc Gréaux, and Ghost has its name inscribed on the perpetual trophy, which remains on display at the port.

Ghost clocked the fastest time around the island at 1 hour, 51 minutes, and 12 seconds, yet finishing 20 minutes shy of the record of 1 hour, 32 minutes, and 7 seconds set by the 147’ Visione in 2004. donald Tofias took first place in the mid-size class aboard the 76’ W-Class White Wings. Class 1, for smaller boats from 30 to 50’, witnessed a close call between two local boats: raymond Magras’ 34’ Speedy nemo and raphael Magras’ 34’ Maelia coming in first and second place respectively with only one minute separating the two boats in a fight to the finish. Phaedo, a bright orange catamaran and the only multi-hull in the race, won class 4.

“What a fabulous way to spend the last day of 2010,” says Mark del Giudice, marina manager at Forty 1° north in newport, rI, who came in to help organize the race, along with the St Barth yacht Club and the Port of Gustavia.

Champagne flowed at the awards ceremony, and as owners and skippers said ‘see you next year,’ perhaps they were already dreaming of sailing into 2012 at the next new year’s eve regatta.n

une flotte battant tous les records. des voiliers inimaginables. des avions de la seconde guerre mondiale. des conditions météo idéales. tous les éléments se sont réunis pour rendre fabuleux le 16ème anniversaire du st barth bucket, un événement qui ne cesse de croître en importance depuis ses modestes débuts en 1996. certains prétendent que c’était le meilleur bucket de tous les temps. cela était certainement le cas pour virago, un sloop frers de 30 mètres construit par nautor swan en 2006, qui a remporté le premier prix. concurrent dans la catégorie des gazelles des Mers, virago est arrivé huitième le vendredi 25 mars, la première journée de course, en concurrence serrée avec des voiliers comme blue too, un ketch de 34 mètres de alloy Yachts, et helios, une vraie beauté de 45 mètres de Perini navi. les autres voiliers de ce groupe inscrits variaient du sloop de course P2, de 38 mètres, jusqu’au majestueux Maltese falcon de 88 mètres avec sa configuration dynarig impressionnante. samedi et dimanche, virago s’est classé deuxième

dans l’ensemble, remportant deux fois la première place parmi les gazelles, ce qui représentait la meilleure performance générale de la bucket. des voiliers de la catégorie des gazelles ont remporté aussi les deuxième et troisième places dans l’ensemble : hanuman, une copie moderne exacte de 42 mètres du J-class Endeavour ii de 1937, est arrivé deuxième. construit par les chantiers royal huisman en mars 2009, et portant le nom du dieu-singe hindou, hanuman a gagné la newport regatta en 2010 et la régate du 31 décembre à saint barth en 2009. le sloop frers symmetry, de 29 mètres, construit en 2004, s’est distingué en remportant de façon impressionnante la troisième place, ce qui fait que les trois premiers gagnants appartenaient tous à la catégorie des gazelles. aux gazelles et à la deuxième catégorie traditionnelle, les grandes dames des Mers, s’est ajouté cette année une troisième catégorie, les Elegantes des Mers, à cause du très grand nombre de participants et afin de donner à plus de monde la possibilité de gagner!

Great weather conditions. all the elements came together for a fantastic 16th anniversary of the St Barth Bucket, an event that began modestly back in 1996 and has continued to grow in stature. Some say it was the best Bucket yet. It certainly was a winner for Virago, a 30-meter Frers sloop built by nautor Swan in 2006, which took top honors.

Sailing in Les Gazelles des Mers class, Virago came in eighth on Friday, March 25, the first day of the race, competing closely with such boats as Blue Too, a 34-meter alloy yachts ketch, and Helios, a 45-meter beauty from Perini navi, whose other yachts in the Bucket ranged from P2, a 38-meter racing sloop, to the majestic 88-meter Maltese Falcon and its impressive dynarig design. On Saturday and Sunday, Virago placed

second overall, with two first place wins among the Gazelles, adding up to the best performance in the Bucket.

Second and third place overall also went to boats in the Gazelles class: Hanuman, a 42-meter modern replica of the 1937 J-Class endeavour II, came in second. Built at the royal Huisman Shipyard in March 2009, and named for the Hindu monkey god, Hanuman won the 2010 newport regatta and the 2009 new year’s eve regatta in Saint Barth. The 2004 29-meter Frers sloop, Symmetry, turned in an impressive performance for a third place win, putting the top three in the Gazelles class. The Gazelles and the second traditional class, Les Grandes dames des Mers, were joined this year by a third class, Les elegantes des Mers, due to the large size of the fleet, and to give more boats a chance to win!

quinze voiliers de la liste participaient pour la première fois, y compris le ketch Ethereal de royal huisman à 58 mètres, qui concourait dans sa toute première régate, tout comme le christopher, un ketch tout neuf de 46 mètres conçu par ron holland et lancé en décembre dernier. l’un des plus beaux parmi les nouveaux participants était Marie, un ketch de 55 mètres construit par les chantiers vitters en 2010 et muni d’une coque en aluminium ultra-moderne. le propriétaire du Marie est aussi le principal bienfaiteur du texas flying legends Museum (bosarge family foundation) à houston, texas qui, en discutant avec les organisateurs du bucket, a conçu l’idée d’un spectacle aérien exécuté par quatre anciens avions de la seconde guerre mondiale qui feraient partie des événements pour fêter tout au long de l’année le 25ième anniversaire de la première régate bucket qui a eu lieu à nantucket en 1986 (le nantucket bucket).

Fifteen boats on the roster were newcomers, including ethereal, a 58-meter royal Huisman ketch, which was sailing in its first regatta ever, as was Christopher, a new 46-meter ketch designed by ron Holland and launched last december. another handsome newcomer was Marie, a 55-meter ketch built at Vitters Shipyard in 2010, with an ultra-modern aluminum hull.

The owner of Marie is also a primary benefactor of the Texas Flying Legends Museum (Bosarge Family Foundation) in Houston, Texas and in conversations with the Bucket organizers, the idea for an air show with four vintage WWII planes was launched as part of the yearlong 25th anniversary celebration of the first Bucket regatta that was sailed in nantucket in 1986 (the nantucket Bucket).

l’idée a été adoptée avec beaucoup d’enthousiasme et ces avions vieux de 75 ans — un Mustang P15, un P-40-K, un goodyear fg-1d corsair, et un b-25J— ont traversé la plus large étendue d’eau qu’ils avaient parcourue depuis la seconde guerre mondiale, en faisant plusieurs escales entre le texas et st Maarten où ils étaient basés (la piste de saint barth étant trop courte). la vue de ces avions, qui sont passés au-dessus de l’aéroport et puis ont exécuté des acrobaties aériennes à la fin de la course l’après-midi, a beaucoup ajouté à l’émotion du bucket.

Profitant de vents de 13 à 17 noeuds et d’une mer calme sous un soleil radieux, les voiliers ont pu évoluer sans incident pour compléter les trois courses du weekend : un tour de l’île dans le sens des aiguilles

The idea met with great enthusiasm and these 75 year-old planes— a P15 Mustang, a P-40-K, a Goodyear FG-1d Corsair, and a B-25J—flew the farthest over water they have flown since WWII, making several stops along the way from Texas to St Maarten where they were based (the runway in St Barth is too short). From a fly-by at the airport to aerial stunts at the end of the race in the afternoon, these planes added to the excitement of the Bucket.

With winds from 13 to 17 knots and calm seas under perfectly sunny skies, the boats had straightforward sailing in three courses over the weekend: around the island in both clockwise and counterclockwise

Petite île. grande course. c’est l’intention des voiles de st barth, déjà bien musclé pour sa deuxième édition en 2011 avec près de 50 voiliers inscrits. le double du début en 2010. les drapeaux colorés des sponsors (y compris l’hôtel guanahani, les montres richard Mille, gaastra sportswear et coca-cola) s’agitaient dans le vent de 13 à 17 noeuds qui assurait d’excellentes conditions en mer. revenu défendre son titre dans la classe maxi-yacht, rambler 100 de george david s’est avéré imbattable, terminant 1-2-1-1.

“Le maniement du voilier nous ravit et nous l’exploitons à 100%, même sur de courts parcours,” déclare son skipper, Ken read. genuine risk , le voilier de 30 m conçu par dubois, était son plus fort concurrent : “L’équipage de Genuine Risk, qui inclut des membres de l’équipe suédoise de l’America’s Cup est très compétent” ajoute read. “C’est un yacht équipé de quille à ballaste, différent du nôtre mais super performant. The 97’ (30m) dubois-designed Genuine risk put up the best competition: “Genuine risk is a well-sailed boat, with a lot of the Swedish america’s Cup team on board. It’s a canting-keeled boat, different from ours, but still high performance”, read adds. “We had our work cut out for us.” Sir Peter Harrison’s Farr 115 Sojana finished in third place.

In the racing class, Jim Schwartz and Vesper beat three St Barth-based boats: raymond Magras’ Speedy nemo, raphael Magras’ Mae-Lia, and fashion photographer Patrick demarchelier’s Puffy, while nico Cortlever’s nix won the racing/cruising class. The island can’t get any bigger but the regatta certainly can, and by the look of things, race organizer François Tolède, race director Luc Poupon, and the large crew of volunteers it takes to run the regatta wouldn’t be surprised if the size of the fleet doubled again as Les Voiles de Saint Barth develops into a truly major event. “everyone left with smiles on their faces,” says Tolède. “I think they’ll be back for more!”. n

une flotte de petits sloops et une goélette évoquant les voiliers traditionnels qui transportaient des marchandises d’une île à l’autre dans les années 1950 et 1960 sont arrivées de carriacou, d’antigua, de nevis, d’anguilla et de saint Martin pour la troisième édition de la West indies regatta qui a eu lieu du 29 avril au 1er mai 2011.

“De sept voiliers au quai de Wall House en 2009 nous sommes passés à neuf vaisseaux et la barque de formation, Picton Castle, au quai principal cette année,” déclare alexis andrews, organisateur de la course et propriétaire de genesis, vainqueur en 2011. “De plus, nous sommes passés sous l’égide du Club UNESCO à St Barth, il y a plus de prix … c’est à dire, nous continuons d’évoluer. Ce qui n’a pas changé c’est l’idée d’origine : inviter les gens de St Barth à partager avec nous l’expérience de la voile à l’ancienne.”

“The regatta has grown from seven boats on the Wall House quay in 2009 to nine vessels and the sail training barque, Picton Castle, at the main quay this year,” says race organizer alexis andrews, owner of Genesis, the winning boat in 2011. “also, we have come under the banner of the UneSCO Club in St Barth, there are more prizes… in other words we continue to evolve. With winds of 15-20 knots from the east, and fairly calm seas, Charles Hambleton, skipper of the newly renovated sloop, Summer Cloud, got off to a great start and led the first day’s race right to the finish line, before losing by a nose to alexis andrews aboard his sloop, Genesis.

“Plenty of wind this year gave rise to heated racing,” confirms andrews, who swept to first place over two days of racing. andrews hopes more boats will participate next year: “We hope to encourage a few more vessels that are scattered around the Caribbean to take part, and we also plan to invite another sail training ship to join us,” he notes. and the Port of Gustavia has promised to always make room for the West Indies regatta and its wonderful spirit of old fashioned sailing.n

tous ceux qui aiment plonger, nager dans la mer, aller à la pêche ou tout simplement se promener le long d’une plage sont conscients de la fragilité de nos ressources naturelles. un cyclone majeur, tel que luis qui a frappé saint barth en 1995, détruit aussi bien les récifs de corail que les dunes, fragilisant encore plus les écosystèmes. cependant, la création de la réserve naturelle de l’île et les efforts d’une biologiste marine dévouée ont beaucoup contribué à améliorer la situation. anyone who likes to dive, swim in the ocean, go fishing, or just walk along the beach is aware of the fragility of our natural resources. a major hurricane, such as Luis that hit St Barth in 1995, destroys the coral reefs and dunes, leaving our ecosystems ever more fragile than before. But the island’s marine park and the efforts of a determined marine biologist have helped enormously.

“On voit maintenant beaucoup plus de poissons dans les zones protégées de la réserve naturelle,” déclare bertrand caizergues de st barth Plongée, l’une des six compagnies de plongée actuellement actives dans l’île. “Ici la plongée est excellente car les sites se trouvent à moins de 30 mètres de profondeur et présentent peu de dangers. En fait, 80% des sites ici se trouvent à moins de 20 mètres, et il y a quatre épaves merveilleuses à visiter,” ajoute-t-il. Pendant les 18 années où il a travaillé à saint barth, il a vu augmenter le nombre de tortues et d’anguilles de mer, de raies tachetées, de requins dormeurs, d’oursins blancs et d’autres espèces qui fréquentent les eaux autour de l’île. caizergues serait même en faveur d’augmenter la portée et la dimension de la réserve: “Pourquoi pas?” demande-t-il.

“En fin de compte cela profiterait à tous, surtout aux générations futures.” il préconise aussi d’augmenter le nombre de sites de plongée, non seulement parce que plonger c’est sa profession, mais aussi parce que le développement des activités de plongée ajouterait à l’économie de l’île.

“Une promotion accrue ajoutée au bouche -à-oreille pourrait contribuer à faire de l’île une destination incontournable pour les amateurs de sites peu profonds comme ceux dont nous bénéficions grâce au plateau continental qui entoure Saint Barth,” affirme caizergues. “Aujourd’hui nous exploitons environ 20 sites. L’ouverture de nouveaux sites ajouterait de la diversité et renforcerait la réputation de l’île en tant que destination de plongée. On ne sait jamais où l’on trouvera une expérience fabuleuse.”

En plus des efforts de conservation des fonds sous-marins dans la réserve naturelle, une restauration des dunes très efficace est en cours à la plage du gouverneur, grâce aux efforts de la biologiste marine dr. deborah brosnan et de son équipe au laboratoire du brosnan center: “J’observais la plage depuis plus de deux ans et l’érosion devenait de plus en plus grave, les plantes étaient mortes ou malades, en partie à cause des périodes de sècheresse et des cyclones mais aussi parce que les gens s’y asseyaient,” déclare-t-elle.

“There are a lot more fish to see in the marine park’s protected zones,” says Bertrand Caizergues of St Barth Plongée, one of the six dive companies currently operating on the island.

“The diving is good here as the sites are less than 30 meters deep and less dangerous. In fact, 80% of the dives here are less than 20 meters, and there are four great shipwrecks to visit,” he points out. In the 18 years he has been working in St Barth, he has seen an increase in the number of sea turtles, marine eels, leopard stingrays, nurse sharks, white sea urchins, and other species found around the island.

Caizergues is even a proponent of increasing the scope and area of the marine park: “Why not?” he asks. “Ultimately it would be good for everyone, especially future generations.” He is also in favor of increasing the number of dive sites, not just because he is in the business of diving, but also because the business of diving

could be developed as an economic plus for the island.

“Word of mouth and additional promotion could help the island become a true destination for divers who like the shallow sites we have thanks to the continental plateau around St Barth,” Caizergues says. “Today we have about 20 sites. More sites would mean more diversity for the divers and help build the island’s reputation as a dive destination. you never know where you might see something fabulous.”

In addition to the underwater work done by the marine park, a successful dune restoration project is underway at Gouverneur Beach, thanks to marine biologist dr. deborah Brosnan and her team at the Brosnan Center Lab: “I’d been watching that beach for over two years and it was getting more and more eroded, plants were dead or dying, partly due to droughts and hurricanes, as well as people sitting on the dunes,” she says.

Un récif vivant absorbe jusqu’à 90% de l’énergie des vagues assurant la sécurité de la plage et la tranquillité des eaux. La dégradation des récifs de toute la Caraïbe est bien connue. Le défi pour nous est de les régénérer. Dans la baie de St Jean, nos scientifiques s’efforcent de restaurer le récif de corail et la plage. Nous apportons du corail vivant que nous transplantons dans le récif. A l’aide d’un ciment sous-marin nous avons réussi à attacher du corail cerveau et du corail corne d’élan entre autres. Nous suivons leur progrès pour déterminer lesquels sont les mieux adaptés à survivre dans les eaux de la Caraïbe à l’avenir, lorsque la température et le niveau de la mer augmentent.” n

Brosnan also points out that the Caribbean is home to 9% of the world’s coral reefs.

“Local fisheries depend on them,” she says. “reefs protect the shore against storms and heavy swells—as anyone who has ever anchored inside and seaward of a reef knows well. a living reef absorbs up to 90% of wave energy making the beach safe and the waters tranquil. It’s no secret that coral reefs have degraded throughout the Caribbean. Our question is how do we bring them back. In St Jean Bay our scientists are focused on restoring the coral reef and beach. To rebuild the reef we are transplanting living coral.

Using underwater cement we’ve been able to successfully attach finger corals, brain corals and elkhorn corals. We monitor their survival in order to learn which forms are best suited to survive in the Caribbean waters of the future, as temperatures and sea levels rise.” n
