Chers amis et fidèles visiteurs, Merci pour l’extraordinaire soutien apporté à l’île de Saint Barthélémy. Votre présence est un remède pour l’âme. Nous avons survécu à l’un des ouragans les plus dévastateurs ayant jamais frappé les Antilles, mais grâce à l’incroyable force, la conﬁance en soi et la volonté indéfectible des habitants, le fonctionnement de l’île a pu être rétabli peu de temps après la catastrophe.

Nous adressons nos plus vifs remerciements à notre président Bruno Magras, qui a pris très vite les bonnes décisions. Peu après le passage de l’ouragan Irma, il s’est adressé à la population qui s’est battue : “L’usine de dessalement fonctionne et de l’eau potable sera distribuée, l’incinérateur fonctionne, EDF est opérationnel et nos écoles sont en bon état… Je pense que nous pouvons trouver les moyens dont nous avons besoin localement pour retomber sur nos pieds”, a aﬃrmé M. Magras, dont le plan de reconstruction a été élaboré avec une précision militaire. Rares sont les autres îles qui bénéﬁcient d’un tel leadership, en particulier dans le sillage d’une catastrophe naturelle de cette envergure.

En fait, juste après le passage dévastateur de l’ouragan de catégorie V Irma avec ses rafales de vent allant jusqu’à 360 km/h qui ont arraché les toitures, ses vagues immenses qui se sont engouﬀrées dans les maisons et ses tornades qui ont retourné les voitures, toute la population était dehors, occupée à déblayer les débris, les arbres et autres jonchant les rues et les routes, tandis que leurs propres maisons demeuraient dépourvues d’eau, d’électricité, et parfois même de murs. Ils ont fait montre d’un sens profond de solidarité, aidant les autres victimes à surmonter l’épuisement dont ils souﬀraient à force de travailler toute la journée au soleil, sans ombre, la végétation ayant été détruite.

La rédaction de Harbour Magazine a décidé que la meilleure manière de témoigner sa solidarité était de publier cette édition annuelle et de soutenir la reprise économique de l’île. Nous sommes heureux que vous soyez là pour partager avec nous les déﬁs de cette saison, tandis que Saint Barth se relève et retrouve une nouvelle fois sa position de principale destination touristique des Antilles. À l’avenir de cette petite île si résistante !

Thank you for your extraordinary outpouring of support for the island of St Barthélemy. The fact that you are here is a balm to our very soul. We have survived one of the most devastating hurricanes ever experienced in the Caribbean islands, yet thanks to the incredible strength, self-reliance, and sheer willpower of the residents, the island was up and running in a very short time after the storm. In fact, just one day after Irma, an unprecedented category-5 hurricane that devastated the island, with wind gusts up to 225 mph blowing off roofs, huge waves crashing into homes, and tornados turning cars upside down, the entire population was outside clearing debris from the streets, while many of their own homes were without water, without electricity, or even without walls. The sense of solidarity was overwhelming, helping victims overcome their exhaustion as they suffered from working all day in the hot sun, with no foliage left on the trees to offer shade. We must offer our most sincere thanks to our president, Bruno Magras, who very quickly made important decisions to set the recovery in motion. Shortly after hurricane Irma hit, he addressed the population, exhausted from their incredible efforts: “The water desalination plant is functional and drinking water will be distributed, the incinerator is working, EDF is operational, and our schools are in good shape… I think that we can find the means we need locally to get back on our feet,” confirmed Magras, whose recovery plan was conceived with military precision. Not many other islands have this kind of leadership, especially in the face of a natural catastrophe of this caliber. The staff of Harbour Magazine decided that the best way to show its solidarity was to publish this annual edition and help support the economic recovery of the island. We are glad you are here to share this challenging season with us, as Saint Barth rises and once again claims its position as the top tourist destination in the Caribbean. Véritables points d’orgue de la saison touristique, les deux régates la Saint-Barth Bucket et Les Voiles de Saint-Barth, deux incontournables événements nautiques, auront lieu comme prévu en mars et avril 2018. “Nous faisons de notre mieux pour que l’île puisse accueillir tous les invités, équipages et spectateurs, avec le même niveau d’hospitalité et de professionnel que d’habitude”, ont annoncé les organisateurs des Voiles, François Tolède et Luc Poupon dans un communiqué de presse quelques semaines à peine après le passage d’Irma. La Bucket a répondu dans les mêmes termes : “Nous avons le plaisir d’annoncer que des engagements forts ont été pris de toutes parts pour que la Bucket puisse avoir lieu chaque année et nous pouvons aﬃrmer avec certitude que l’édition 2018 de la St Barth Bucket aura lieu, et que ce sera une superbe édition !”. Grâce à l’aide de l’équipe du port, les régates de l’île atteindront le même niveau d’excellence qu’avant. Par ailleurs, l’île travaille d’arrache-pied pour que le plus grand nombre d’hôtels et de villas à louer soient rouverts à temps pour la St Barth Bucket, Les Voiles, et d’autres événements.

RÉSOLUMENT TOURNÉS VERS L ’ AVENIR…

Ces dernières années, notre port a suscité l’admiration, tant par sa beauté que par la qualité de ses services et son excellence globale. Il n’est pas toujours aisé de maintenir un tel niveau. Bien des ports, sur les îles voisines, cherchent à rivaliser avec le port de Gustavia, mais nous restons vigilants – en particulier face à des ouragans aussi puissants ! Cette année est la preuve qu’il y a toujours de nouveaux déﬁs à relever, et, bien que le port soit entièrement opérationnel, il reste bon nombre de problèmes à résoudre. Sans entrer dans les détails, nous continuerons, autant que faire se peut, à répondre aux besoins de nos clients, du propriétaire de yacht le plus luxueux au navigateur amateur. 2018 sera une année particulière, avec de nombreux déﬁs à relever. Mais quoi qu’il arrive, le personnel du port de Gustavia reste vigilant pour faire de chaque visite l’événement le plus agréable et le plus mémorable possible, tandis que nous pansons nos plaies, surmontons Irma et entrevoyons de jours meilleurs.

Considered highpoints of the tourist season, both the St Barth Bucket and Les Voiles de Saint-Barth—two major nautical events— will take place as planned in March and April 2018. “We are doing our best so that the island can welcome all of our guests, crews as well as spectators, with the same level of hospitality and professionalism as usual,” announced François Tolède and Luc Poupon, the organizers of Les Voiles in a press release just weeks after Irma. The Bucket responded similarly: “We are happy to announce that we have strong commitments from all segments that make the Bucket happen every year and we can announce with certainty that the 2018 edition of the St Barths Bucket will not only happen but will be a good one!”. With the help of the Port staﬀ, the island’s regattas will be able to maintain the same level of excellence as in the past, and the island is working hard to get as many hotels and rental villas open in time for the St Barth Bucket, Les Voiles, and other events

LOOKING FORWARD…

In recent years, our port has been greatly admired for its beauty, quality of service, and overall excellence. To maintain such a high standard is not always easy. Many of the ports on neighboring islands seek to rival such excellence, however we remain vigilant— especially in the face of such powerful hurricanes! This year was proof that there are always new challenges and while the port is fully operational there are still many issues that need to be resolved. Without going into detail, we will continue to respond as best as possible to the needs of our clients, from the most upscale yachts to the amateur sailor. 2018 will be a special kind of year, with many challenges to confront. But no matter what happens, The Port of Gustavia staﬀ is always attentive to make sure that everyone’s visit is as enjoyable—and memorable—as possible, as we put the consequences of Irma behind us and look forward toward sunnier days ahead. 38

• Le navire doit être à jour de ses documents (papiers d’identiﬁcation du navire et assurances). Assurez-vous que toutes les personnes à bord sont munies des pièces d’identité nécessaires pour entrer sur le territoire de Saint-Barthélemy. • Appelez la capitainerie par VHF Canal 12 avant toute manœuvre. • Aucun navire de passage n’est autorisé à manœuvrer à quai et sur les bouées entre 17h00 et 07h00. • Tout navire qui entre et sort du port doit emprunter le chenal d’accès. La vitesse maximale autorisée dans toute la zone portuaire est de 5 noeuds. • La baignade, la pêche et tous les sports nautiques doivent s’eﬀectuer en dehors de la zone portuaire en respectant les règles propres à chaque activité. • Des bacs sélectifs sont prévus pour le tri des ordures ménagères (verres et canettes directement dans le bac prévu et autres déchets dans un sac en plastique et dans les bacs). • Les autres déchets doivent être déposés directement au service de propreté à Public. • Les barbecues ne peuvent pas se faire sur les bateaux amarrés à quai ni sur les bouées. Pensez à ne pas déranger votre voisin avec le bruit (musique, travaux...).

• Il est strictement interdit de rejeter les eaux de fonds de cales dans le port.

• Nous vous conseillons d’éteindre vos radars.

• Seul le capitaine ou un membre d’équipage sont autorisés à eﬀectuer les formalités d’entrée ou de sortie du navire.

• All documents for the boat must be up-to-date (ID, registration, insurance...). Please be sure that all persons aboard have all necessary documents (ie: passport and visas...) required to enter the territory of St. Barthélemy.

• Call the harbormaster's oﬃce on VHF channel 12 before making any maneuvers.

• Boats are not authorized to maneuver at the dock or on buoys at night, between the hours of 5:00pm and 7:00am. • All boats that enter and leave the port must use the access channel. The maximum speed allowed in the port zone is ﬁve knots.

• Swimming, ﬁshing, and all nautical sports must take place outside of the port zone, respecting the appropriate rules for each activity.

• Household trash must be separated for recycling before left in the trash area on the dock (cans and bottles together in the container provided; all other trash in plastic bags then in containers provided).

• All other trash and large items must be taken directly to the incinerator in Public. • BBQs cannot be used aboard boats anchored at the dock or on buoys. Try not to disturb your neighbors with too much noise (music, hammering, etc.). • It is strictly forbidden to throw stagnant water from the hull of the boat into the harbor.

• We recommend that you shut oﬀ your radar. • Only the captain of the vessel or a member of the crew is authorized to take care of entry and departure clearances. 43

Harbour Magazine : Qu’est-ce qui est le plus fascinant dans le projet Christophe Harbour ? Buddy darby : tout d’abord c’est l’un des plus beaux coins de terre des caraïbes, voire du monde. et l’île de saintkitts-et-nevis offre l’équilibre parfait entre culture, nature et communauté. il est rare de trouver tous ces attributs conjugués à la possibilité de construire une communauté pouvant constituer un héritage pour des familles, des amis, des navigateurs et, avant toute chose, pour le pays en luimême. avec 10 km² d’immense beauté, la topographie de christophe harbour oscille entre de magnifiques montagnes volcaniques culminant à 300 mètres, des plateaux abritant des criques à couper le souffle et des plages de sable blanc. La première fois que je suis venu, c’était un peu comme une toile vierge, sur laquelle il était possible de créer quelque chose de vraiment spécial. notre équipe d’architectes expérimentés, qui a fait ses armes sur mes précédents projets à kiawah island, caroline du sud et doonbeg, irlande, a

également pu appliquer notre philosophie, “designing with nature”, concevoir avec la nature, pour agrandir et améliorer ce qui existait déjà, tout en préservant l’essence de la région.

HM : Qu’est-ce qui s’est passé en matière de développement au cours des cinq dernières années, depuis la dernière fois que nous nous sommes entretenus pour Harbour Magazine ? Bd : nous avons été très occupés ces cinq dernières années, et l’évolution de notre communauté est remarquable. contrairement à d’autres promoteurs, nous avons une approche à long terme et nous prenons notre temps pour concevoir soigneusement, construire intelligemment et créer de la valeur au fil du temps. L’ajout le plus excitant est notre marina dédiée aux superyachts. d’une profondeur de 5,6 mètres, la marina dispose de 24 emplacements d’une longueur de 45 à 67 mètres. Les amarrages sont disponibles à la vente en pleine propriété ou pour l’amarrage à court terme, et gérés par notre équipe expérimentée sous la houlette de deux anciens capitaines de superyachts. La réouverture des boutiques et de peppe’s, devenu le lieu à la mode pour prendre son petit-déjeuner ou son déjeuner, ont ajouté à l’enthousiasme général. nous disposons du plus important stock de carburant de la caraïbe orientale avec la possibilité de faire le plein à l’emplacement à plus de 454 litres par minute, pour une opération rapide et propre. Les services dédiés aux équipages ont également été développés, avec notamment le terminal pour jets privés yu Lounge, extrêmement important pour les charters arrivant et quittant notre marina. L’attraction principale de la marina, the customs house, ouvrira plus tard cette année et disposera d’une salle de gym, d’un salon pour les équipages ainsi que d’un bureau de douane et d’immigration et d’un centre des opérations de la marina. nous sommes fiers d‘avoir achevé 30 résidences privées, et nous commencerons ou achèverons la construction d’autres résidences cette année. the pavilion est notre beach club privé et restaurant gastronomique. Harbour Magazine: What do you ﬁnd most exciting about the Christophe Harbour project? Buddy darby: first, it’s one of the most stunning pieces of land in the caribbean, possibly in the world. and st. kitts and nevis provide the perfect balance of culture, nature, and community. it’s rare to find all of these attributes plus the opportunity to build a community that can be a legacy for families, friends, yachtsmen, and most importantly for the country itself.

with 2,500 acres of immense beauty, christophe harbour’s topography ranges from 1,000foot beautiful volcanic mountains to plateaus with beautiful bays and white-sand beaches. when i first visited, to me, it was like a blank canvas where we could create something really special. it also allowed our experienced development team, who cut its teeth at my previous projects in kiawah island, south carolina, and doonbeg, ireland, to apply our “designing with nature” philosophy, to expand upon what already exists and enhance it while preserving the area’s essence.

HM: What has happened in terms of development there over the past ﬁve years, since we last spoke to you in Harbour Magazine? Bd: the last five years have been busy, and our community’s evolution has been remarkable. unlike some other developers, we have a long-term approach and take our time to plan carefully, build sensitively, and create value over time. the most exciting addition is our superyacht marina. with a depth of 18.5 feet, the marina has 24 150-220-foot berths.

the berths are available for freehold sale or short-term docking and managed by our experienced staff, which is led by two former superyacht captains. it’s been exciting this year to see the opening of our retail shops along with peppe’s, which has become a gathering spot for breakfast and lunch. we have the largest fuel farm in the eastern caribbean and offer in-slip fueling in excess of 120 gallons per minute, which makes for a fast and clean refueling service. services for crew are also growing, and the yu Lounge private jet terminal has been extremely important to charters arriving and departing from our marina. the marina’s anchor amenity, the customs house, opens later this year and will have a fitness center and crew lounge along with customs and immigration and marina operations. we are pleased to have 30 private residences completed with several more to begin or complete construction this year. the pavilion is our private beach club and fine dining restaurant. executive chef Barnaby Jones has recently joined the team with significant global experience. he is really focused on expanding a trusted network of local growers and fishermen to provide a world class dining experience with “fresh and local” at its heart. salt plage is our seaside bar and restaurant and fast becoming the place to be for sundowner craft cocktails and live entertainment in the evening. designed using recycled materials from a former sugar factory and salt mill, the bar was named one of the world’s best beachside cafes by `çåÇ¨ k~ëí=qê~îÉäÉê. lll

lll HM : Yachting – s’agissant du monde du yachting, qu’aimez-vous le plus en matière de bateaux et d’esprit de la voile ? Bd : J’ai commencé à naviguer très jeune et j’ai ce lien avec le monde de la voile depuis ma plus tendre enfance. J’aime tous les genres de musique et, de la même manière, j’aime tous les types de yachts, tout en étant plus particulièrement attiré par les voiliers. J’ai possédé des yachts classiques comme le yacht à voile perini navi de 50 mètres andromeda La dea et un plus petit voilier morris de 11 mètres. La navigation à voile a beaucoup à offrir, mais ce que préfère avant tout c’est le calme méditatif de la haute mer et le fait d’être avec la famille et les amis. J’apprécie tout particulièrement le savoir-faire de la construction navale et la communauté de la voile.

lll HM: Yachting—what do you like best about the world of yachting in terms of the boats and the spirit of sailing? Bd: i started sailing at a young age and have been connected to the world of sailing since a boy. Just as i like all types of music, i like all types of boats, but i gravitate towards sailing boats. i have owned classic yachts such as the 165’ perini navi sailing yacht, andromeda La dea, and a smaller 36’ morris sailboat. there’s lots to love about sailing, but for me, it’s the meditative calm of being on the open water and enjoying time with my family and friends. i have a fine appreciation for the craftsmanship of the boats and really enjoy the community of sailing.

HM : Qu’est-ce qui fait de Christophe Harbour un endroit si spécial ? Bd : notre objectif est de faire en sorte que christophe harbour soit considéré comme un deuxième chez soi. nous visons à créer une communauté de résidents et de visiteurs partageant les mêmes intérêts, tout en offrant des services de classe mondiale à une clientèle internationale à la fois exigeante et discrète. J’aime dire qu’il s’agit d’un lieu d’évasion où l’on se sent chez soi et où l’on profite du luxe le plus détendu, pieds nus, de la caraïbe. il me tarde de voir le nouveau golf conçu par tom fazio, que nous prévoyons de construire. fazio lui-même affirme qu’il s’agira du “golf le plus spectaculaire construit ces 30 dernières années”. cet automne marquera par ailleurs l’ouverture de l’établissement park hyatt st. kitts à christophe harbour. cet hôtel de grand luxe de 126 chambres complétera à merveille les services offerts à notre communauté.

HM: What does Christophe Harbour oﬀer its clients to make it such a special place? Bd: at christophe harbour, we aim to be a home away from home. our focus is on creating a community of likeminded residents and guests, while offering world-class s ervices for a discerning and discreet international audience. i like to say that it’s a private escape that feels like home, the best of laidback, barefoot luxury in the caribbean. i am very excited about the upcoming tom fazio-designed golf course that we have planned. fazio himself calls it the “most dramatic course to be built in the last 30 years.” in addition, this fall we will see the opening of park hyatt st. kitts at christophe harbour. this ultra-luxe 126-room hotel will certainly be a great addition to the offerings for our community.

comme le confirme Burak akgül, directeur des ventes, du marketing & du design : “nous sommes le plus grand chantier naval si l’on compte le nombre de bateaux construits, mais si nous sommes uniques c’est avant tout parce nous concevons et construisons nos propres yachts et ne travaillons que rarement avec un architecte naval externe. m. perini avait sa vision personnelle des yachts à voile et a créé une nouvelle technologie tout en créant un nouveau marché”.

a fleet of 58 sailing yachts that turn heads wherever they go! this is the signature of perini navi, the italian superstars of the nautical universe. founded in 1983 in viareggio, italy, perini navi is unique in that they develop, design, and build the majority of its vessels, varying in size from the 25-meter elettra to the extraordinary 88-meter maltese falcon, one of the most iconic boats in the world. there are also more classic perini navi yachts, such as the 46-meter aquarius (built in 1990) that are still racing and circumnavigating the globe.

cherchant à optimiser l’expérience globale vécue à bord de ses yachts, perini navi peaufine constamment ses systèmes de navigation matériels et logiciels que Burak akgül décrit comme la « technologie invisible qui rend ces bateaux extraordinaires, en plus de l’extérieur qui porte clairement le marque du design de perini navi. ces dernières années, nous n’avons pas ménagé nos efforts pour améliorer les systèmes de navigation : plus le bateau est simple à manier, plus les familles éprouvent du plaisir à bord. Le système de navigation amélioré permet au barreur de manœuvrer seul cinq voire six voiles. tout cela a été combiné pour donner naissance à l’architecture et au design naval du 70 mètres sybaris, le dernier bateau que nous avons livré et qui a remporté toutes sortes de prix pour l’expression la plus récente du design extérieur par perini navi ». Les designers planchent par ailleurs sur un nouveau design pour bateau de 17 mètres, et comme l’indique Burak akgül, “il allie le summum de ce que nous avons développé en matière de design extérieur et de nouveaux systèmes de navigation permettant de manœuvrer les voiles d’avant et asymétriques. La forme de la coque permet d’améliorer les performances de navigation, tout en conservant et développant tous les attributs du luxe et du style de vie qui vont de pair avec nos yachts”. Représentant régulier de perini navi à la st Barth Bucket au fil des ans, Burak akgül estime que « l’île est l’un des lieux les plus spéciaux au monde. L’endroit offre une occasion unique d’attirer un nombre sans précédent de propriétaires de grands yachts à voile en un seul et même lieu. nous avons décidé d’investir dans cette régate car nous voyons le plaisir que cet événement procure à nos clients, avec un grand nombre de propriétaires qui profitent pleinement des quatre jours de course dans un décor exceptionnel. tout est en parfaite adéquation”.

striving to improve the overall experience aboard their yachts, perini navi continually refines the sailing systems— both hardware and software, which akgül describes as “the unseen technology that make these yachts great, apart from the exteriors that are quickly identified as a perini navi design. we have been working very hard over the past years on the sailing systems: the easier it is to sail the vessel, the more the families will enjoy sailing on them. the improved sailing system allows the person at the helm to handle five maybe six sails. this marries into the naval architecture and styling of the 70-meter sybaris, our most recent delivery winning all kinds of awards for the latest expression in our exterior design at perini navi.” there is also a new 47-meter design on the drawing board, and as akgül notes, “it brings together the cutting edge of what we’ve been developing in exterior design and the new sailing systems to handle headsails and asymmetrics. the hull form of the boat allows for increased sailing capabilities – while retaining and expanding on all the attributes of luxury and lifestyle synonymous with our yachts.” having frequently represented perini navi at the st Barth Bucket over the years, akgül feels that the island is “one of the single most special places in the world. the location provides such a unique opportunity to draw such an unprecedented number of owners of large sailing yachts to one place. we have chosen to invest in this race as we see how much pleasure our clients get from the event, with a large pool of owners who really enjoy four days of racing in an exceptional location. it all comes together perfectly…”

LES VOILES au féminin

Comment sont nées Les Voiles au Féminin ?

tout a commencé finalement grâce à mowgli fox avec son école Lil-e st Barth. J’ai commencé la voile avec lui en 2010. pour les voiles de st Barth 2010, il a monté un équipage féminin. J’ai trouvé le concept plutôt sympa. on était alors 4 à bord, toutes débutantes, sur un tout petit bateau un requin, parmi des géants de la mer. c’était fascinant. et ca a été le déclic, le début de l’aventure. Je suis devenue vraiment mordue de voile, de régates. J’en faisais au maximum, en Guadeloupe, à st martin, st tropez partout où je pouvais. Je me souviens de la captain oliver en 2011, sur le Requin, avec des conditions de mer difficile pour un petit bateau comme le Requin. et là je me suis dit, c’est fini, je veux mon propre bateau et un bateau plus gros. et ça y est , c’est parti, le projet a germé. déjà trouver le bon bateau... trouver le financement... trouver le concept qui allait fédérer du monde. tout est allé très vite. L’aventure aurait pu s’arrêter là sans l’aide précieuse des sponsors, et notamment tiru qui nous suit et nous soutient depuis le début. 2012, les voiles au féminin naissaient, avec un projet complètement extraordinaire. acheter un bateau à st tropez, monter un équipage féminin pour participer aux voiles de st tropez 2012 et être les ambassadrices de st Barth à st tropez. Ça a été une aventure mémorable, extraordinaire. certes, on n’a pas gagné la course, mais tout le monde se souvient encore de l’équipage féminin de st Barth. ambiance assurée autour de notre stand représentant st Barthélemy. Les voiles au féminin n’aurait jamais pu exister si il n’y avait pas eu au départ ce groupe de femmes, d’horizons tous différents, les trois quart débutantes en voile qui ont eu envie de créer quelque chose ensemble, qui ont tout simplement cru en elles même. Je parle de daniela, tassa, emilie, sophie, nadine, karine. Le noyau dur ! mais qui ne nous empêche pas d’accueillir de nouvelles recrues !

How did Les Voiles au Féminin come about?

it all started thanks to mowgli fox and his school, Lil-e st Barth. i started sailing with him in 2010. for Les voiles de st Barth 2010 he created an all women’s team, and i really liked the concept. there were four of us to start, all beginners, on a small boat, a Requin, sailing against bigger boats. it was fascinating. and that was the start of our adventure. i became addicted to sailing and regattas. i raced as often as possible, in Guadeloupe, st martin, st tropez, and everywhere i could. i remember the captain oliver Regatta in 2011 on the Requin, with conditions at sea that were difficult for such a small boat.

so the project took seed... find a boat. find the financing. find a concept to get everyone together. it all happened quickly. the adventure could have come to a halt without the important help of sponsors, and especially tiru, who has been with us since the beginning.

Le voiles au féminin was born in 2012, as part of an extraordinary project. to buy a boat in st tropez, build an all feminine team to sail in Les voiles de st tropez 2012 and be the ambassadors of st Barth in st tropez. it was a memorable adventure, extraordinary. of course we did not win the race, but everyone still remembers the women’s team from st Barth. and there was a great ambiance around out stand representing st Barthélemy.

Les voiles au féminin would have never existed without this group of women, from all different horizons, threequarters were beginning sailors who wanted to create something together, and who believed in themselves. i am referring to daniela, tassa, emilie, sophie, nadine, karine. the core group! But there is nothing keeping us from welcoming new recruits!

Le bateau….

un bijou !!! albacor 4, un J109, super bateau, de 35 pieds, défendant les couleurs de tiru, Groupe edf, simple dans ses manœuvres, efficace et performant. très bien adapté pour nous les femmes. en plus il a fait ses preuves. il a quand même traversé l’atlantic lors de la course de l’aRc, en 2012, juste à deux personnes, mon ami Gérald et moi-même (eh oui, albacor accepte aussi la gente masculine de temps en temps !). un bon régatier que j’apprivoise et apprends à mieux connaître avec le temps. il nous a permis de finir 2ème à la heinekein Regatta en 2015 ! et aujourd’hui, nous sommes vraiment compétitives vis-à-vis des autres équipages locaux. nous sommes de véritables adversaires et bien présentes dans la course.

Ce que je préfère dans la voile….

ce qui m’a tout d’abord accroché dans la voile, c’est le jeu entre le vent, la mer et le bateau, la recherche de la glisse, la plus parfaite et la plus efficace possible. mais ce que je préfère aujourd’hui, que j’ai appris aussi à découvrir au fil de l’eau et que je savoure réellement à chaque régate, c’est surtout l’aventure humaine. J’aime cet esprit d’équipe qu’on réussit à fédérer sur notre bateau, la cohésion de l’équipage. Bien au-delà des performances, (c’est sûr on préfère quand même finir premières), il y a cette magie qui fait qu’une chef d’entreprise, une artiste, une femme de ménage, des mères de famille, une décoratrice, une journaliste, bref, des femmes bien loin du monde de la voile, et loin d’être des navigatrices hors paire arrivent ensemble à faire avancer ce bateau et à obtenir des résultats. La voile est une vraie leçon de vie.

The boat….

a jewel!!! albacor 4, a J109, a great boat, 35 feet, sailing under the colors of tiru, Groupe edf, simple to maneuver, efficient and performing. very well adapted for us as women. and it had already proved itself having crossed the atlantic during the aRc in 2012, with just two people, my friend Gérald and myself (yes, albacor accepts men from time to time!). i am getting to know the boat better and better, and we finished second in the heinekein Regatta in 2015. today, we are really competitive vis-à-vis other local crews. we are serious adversaries and ready to race.

What I like best about sailing...

what first attracted me to sailing is the play between the wind, the sea, and the boat, the search for the smoothest, most efficient sailing possible. But what i like best today is something i discovered over time and i really enjoy, is the sense of human adventure. i like the team spirit that we have built on our boat, the cohesion of the crew. in addition to our performances, (of course we like to come in first), there is the magic of combining a head of a company, a housekeeper, mothers, a decorator, a journalist, in other words a group of women far from the world of sailing, and far from being professional sailors, yet manage to sail well and get good results. sailing is a good life lesson.

La plus proche de Gustavia, la capitale de l’île, est Shell Beach, la plage aux coquillages, ainsi nommée en raison des minuscules coquillages qui recouvrent le sable. La plus spectaculaire est la plage de Saline : franchissez les dunes et c’est un paysage incroyablement immaculé qui s’offre à vos yeux. Gouverneur est tout simplement magnifique et facilement accessible à pied. La plus attrayante est la plage de St Jean, avec ses bars de plage, ses restaurants et ses boutiques blotties sous les palmiers. Grand Cul-de-Sac est un hautlieu du kite surf bordé d’hôtels et de restaurants. Flamands, Lorient, Petit Cul-de-Sac, Marigot, Public, Petite Anse, Corossol, et les surfers à Toiny… Quelle plage correspond à mon humeur du jour ?

THE BEACHES of Saint Barthélemy

mazing for a tiny island—Saint Barthélemy measures only 8 square miles—to have so many great beaches. The closest to Gustavia, the island’s capital, is Shell Beach, named for the tiny shells that cover the sand. The most dramatic is Saline, a scamper over dunes to reveal a fabulously unspoiled landscape. Gouverneur is also magniﬁcent, and an easy walk to the beach. The most active is St Jean, with beach bars, restaurants, and shops arrayed under the palm trees. Grand Cul-de-Sac hosts kite surfers, hotels, and restaurants. Flamands, Lorient, Petit Cul-de-Sac, Marigot, Public, Petite Anse, Corossol, and the surfers at Toiny… Which beach suits my mood today?

ils viennent des quatre coins du monde pour participer à la st Barth cata cup. en 2008, Jeff Ledée, vincent Jordil et thierry Lhinares, trois navigateurs locaux ont lancé cette régate de premier plan, devenue un événement immanquable pour les catamarans f18. pour cette 9e édition de la cata cup, qui s’est élancée du nikki Beach à st. es honneurs reviennent à deux jeunes navigateurs français, Pierre Le Clainche et Antoine Joubert, qui se sont adjugé la première place en démarrant fort et conservant la tête de la course tout au long des quatre jours. “Nous sommes au septième ciel. Nous n’étions jamais encore venus à Saint Barth, mais avions entendu parler de cet événement. C’est parfait, à tous les niveaux. Nous étions loin d’imaginer que ce serait aussi beau. Les conditions sont tout simplement idéales”, s’enthousiasme Pierre Le Clainche, barreur de Moh’s Places.com. C’est un autre duo français, Gruvan Bontemps et Benjamin Amiot (Eden Rock), qui est monté sur la deuxième marche du podium après avoir remporté la course autour de l’île le jeudi. Les Belges Patrick Demesmaeker et Olivier Gagliani, vainqueurs de la précédente Cata Cup, sont arrivés troisièmes (Les Perles de St Barth). La première équipe mixte était celle formée par Sam Goodchild du R.-U. et Milena Schoenahl de France (GSL Import Export), tandis que les frères Turenne et Patrick Laplace sont arrivés premiers parmi les équipes locales sur leur bateau sponsorisé par le restaurant O’Corail.

We had never been to St Barth before, but we had heard about the event. It is perfect on all levels. We were far from imagining that it would be this beautiful. Second place went to another French team, Gruvan Bontemps and Benjamin Amiot (Eden Rock), who also won Thursday’s around-the-island race, while Belgians Patrick Demesmaeker and Olivier Gagliani, last year’s winners of the Cata Cup, came in third (Les Perles de St Barth). saint Barthélémy est l’endroit le plus chaud des caraïbes pour célébrer la nouvelle année. un nombre si incroyable de bateaux mouillent dans le port de Gustavia que l’on dirait une ville flottante qui s’étend jusqu’à l’horizon. chaque année, le matin du 31 décembre, certains de ces bateaux présents au port se joignent à leurs homologues locaux pour une parade ou une régate amicale autour de l’île, connue sous le nom de new year’s eve Regatta. st Barth is the hottest spot in the caribbean to celebrate the new year. so many boats anchor in the port of Gustavia that you can imagine a floating city stretching toward the horizon. on the morning of december 31 each year, some of these visiting boats line up with their local counterparts for a parade or an informal race around the island referred to as the new year’s eve Regatta.

NEW YEAR’S EVE REGATTA e dernier matin de l’année 2016 n’a pas dérogé à la tradition. Mais avec un ciel nuageux accompagné d’averses et de rafales de vent, seuls six bateaux se sont élancés. La petite ﬂotte comprenait tout de même WinWin, un spectaculaire yacht en carbone de 33 mètres construit par les chantiers navals Baltic en 2014 et qui avait remporté la course cette année-là. Dès l’instant où WinWin prit le départ, il endossa le rôle de favori. Son skipper Ryan Taylor le mena à la victoire pour la deuxième fois à Saint Barthélemy, en bouclant le tour de l’île en deux heures, deux minutes et quinze secondes. “Il y avait un peu de roulis et quelques creux, mais ce n’était pas si mal au vu des prévisions météo. Sur la houle caribéenne, WinWin prend les vagues les unes après les autres, comme s’il voulait les traverser. Quoi qu’il en soit, il se comporte très bien”, décrit Taylor. Les deuxième, troisième et quatrième places sont revenues à des bateaux basés à Saint Barthélemy : le 10 mètres Speedy Nemo de Raymond Magras ; le 11 mètres Albacore 4 et son équipage féminin ; et Mowgli Fox sur son 9 mètres L’île, respectivement. Mark del Giudice contribue chaque année à l’organisation de la régate aux côtés d’Annelisa Gee et de membres du Saint Barth Yacht Club. Les prix ont été oﬀerts par les Ets. Ledée, le Port de Gustavia et le St Barth Yacht Club. Les frais d’inscription à la régate sont reversés au Saint Barth Yacht Club pour son école de voile.

he last morning of 2016 was no exception, yet cloudy skies with rain showers and gusty winds meant that only six boats participated. But the small ﬂeet included the eye-catching WinWin, a 108’ carbon Baltic Yacht that was built in 2014 and won this race that same year. From the minute WinWin left the starting gate, it was a clear favorite. Skipper Ryan Taylor brought the boat to its second victory in Saint Barth with an around-the-island time of two hours, two minutes, and 15 seconds. “The conditions were with a little roll and a few bumps, not too bad with the expected weather. WinWin in the Caribbean swell, powers on through the waves, almost wanting to continue through them. Never the less she handles very well,” says Taylor. Second, third, and fourth place went to Saint Barth-based boats: Raymond Magras’ 34’ Speedy Nemo; the 36’ Albacore 4 and its female crew; and Mowgli Fox and his 30’ L’île, respectively. Mark del Giudice helps organize the race each year with Annelisa Gee, and members of the Saint Barth Yacht Club. The prizes were oﬀered by Ets. Ledée, the Port of Gustavia, and the St Barth Yacht Club. Registration fees for the race go to the Saint Barth Yacht Club for its sailing school.

Le design extérieur sophistiqué du yacht a été dessiné et conçu par German Frers et l'intérieur par Andrew Winch.

Wisp, un sloop Royal Huisman de 35 mètres a remporté la classe Les Mademoiselles des Mers, tandis que Rosehearty, un ketch Perini Navi de 56 mètres, a su repousser son concurrent le plus direct, Meteor, pour s’adjuger la victoire en classe Les Grandes Dames des Mers. Rosehearty a, en outre, gagné le trophée Perini Navi pour la meilleure performance à la Bucket parmi les yachts Perini Navi. Dans la nouvelle classe Corinthian pour Les Voiles Blanches, Koo, le sloop de 43 mètres de Vitters, s’est adjugé la victoire après l’avoir souﬄée à Q. La victoire en classe Les Gazelles des Mers est revenue à Visione, un yacht Baltic de 45 mètres construit en 2002. ith close results in every class, the big winner in 2017 was SPIIP, a 112’ sloop built by Royal Huisman in 2000, winning top honors in Les Elegantes des Mers class, as well winning as the perpetual Bucket Trophy for best overall performance among the pursuit classes. This yacht’s sophisticated exterior design and engineering are by German Frers, with interiors by Andrew Winch. Wisp, a 115’ Royal Huisman sloop, won Les Mademoiselles del Mers class, while the 183’ Perini Navi ketch, Rosehearty, took top honors in Les Grandes Dames des Mers, holding oﬀ her closest competitor, Meteor. Rosehearty also won the Perini Navi Trophy for best performance by a Perini Navi yacht in The Bucket. In the new Corinthian Class for Les Voiles Blanches, the 140’ Vitters sloop, Koo, won after taking the lead from Q. Les Gazelles des Mers class win went to Visione, a 147’ Baltic Yacht built in 2002. The 2017 Bucket Regatta presented a donation of 20,000 euros the Saint Barth Yacht Club Youth Sailing Program.

ix Classes J, évoquant l’esprit des années 30 de la Coupe de l’America, ﬁguraient parmi les incontournables attractions de l’édition 2017 de la St Barth Bucket. Remarquable mélange de classiques rénovés et de répliques plus récentes, les Classes J Velsheda (J7), Shamrock V (J3), Hanuman (J6), Lionheart (J1), Ranger (J5) et Topaz (J8) ont ouvert la régate jeudi 16 mars. Conçu d’après les dessins originaux de Endeavor II de 1937 et construit par Royal Huisman, le 41 mètres Hanuman est arrivé en tête après quatre jours d’une course animée ! L’adversaire le plus direct de Hanuman était Velsheda, qui a remporté trois des confrontations autour des bouées.

Avec un skipper de compétition de la carrure de Ken Read à la barre, Hanuman a signé une performance de haute volée, prenant la tête d’une ﬂotte record de six Classes J à la Bucket.

Based on the original designs of the 1937 Endeavor II and built by Royal Huisman, the 136’ Hanuman was the winner after four days of spirited racing! Le maxi 72 a une nouvelle fois montré de quoi il était capable, remportant la classe maxi 1 ainsi que la première place du classement général de la 8e édition d’une régate qui ne cesse de croître. favori au départ, proteus a franchi la ligne d’arrivée avec trois solides points d’avance sur le second, prospector, tandis qu’sfs, skippé par le navigateur français Lionel péan s’assurait la troisième place, juste devant Bella mente. the winner in 2016, proteus roared back to saint Barth to defend the champion’s title in Les voiles de saint-Barth in 2017, and did just that. a maxi 72, proteus proved its stuff once again, winning class honors in the maxi 1 class as well as the overall top spot in this 8th edition of an ever-growing regatta. a sure favorite going into the race, proteus came out with a solid three-point lead over second-place finisher prospector, sfs, with french sailor Lionel péan as skipper, took third place, and Bella mente feel a bit short in fourth place.

ancé en 2014 sous le nom de Ran V, Proteus appartient actuellement à l’homme d’aﬀaires américain George Sakellaris, qui a su propulser son yacht dans le cercle intime des vainqueurs de grandes régates, et à la première place de la dernière édition des Voiles de St Barth qui s’est disputée du 10 au 15 avril 2017.

Conçu par Vrotijk et construit par les chantiers navals Persico, Proteus a remporté par deux fois la RORC Caribbean 600, et s’en est parfaitement bien tiré lors de la bataille serrée livrée à l’occasion des Voiles de Saint Barth en 2016 en arrachant la victoire au tout dernier bord de l’ultime régate. Sakellaris, qui a quitté l’île avant la cérémonie de clôture, remporte ainsi le prix le plus convoité de la régate, la montre RM 60-01 Chronographe Flyback de Richard Mille, décernée par le partenaire principal de l’événement. Avec près de 65 embarcations sur la ligne de départ, la concurrence était rude. Les autres vainqueurs incluent : vainqueur de la classe Maxi 2 : Windfall ; vainqueur de la classe CSA 0 : Sorcha ; vainqueur de la classe CSA 1 : Fortunata ; vainqueur de la classe CSA 2 : Oystercatcher XXX1 ; vainqueur de la classe CSA 3 : Blitz ; vainqueur de la classe CSA 4 : Pasco's Jaguar ; vainqueur de la classe Melges 24 : Team Island Water World ; : vainqueur de la classe multicoques : Fujin. WEST INDIES REGATTA e plus grand bateau de la ﬂotte était le sloop de 36 mètres Spirit of Bermuda, une réplique construite pour former les jeunes à la voile dans les Bermudes. Il a concouru face au schooner America dans la course inaugurale Antigua Bermuda Race organisée juste avant la 35e Coupe de l’America aux Bermudes. Fllikaroy a remporté le prix de la plus grande distance parcourue : il est parti de Norvège ! Et c’est exactement ce que nous vendons”, décrit Vibe-Petersen. “Q permet d’excellentes performances sous voile. C’est aussi une boîte de nuit, une résidence secondaire, et vous pouvez voyager à travers le monde à son bord. Qui dit mieux ? Personne”. Il est important de faire connaître le yacht et de le faire sortir si vous voulez le louer avec succès. Kim Vibe-Petersen, owner of 51.7m S/Y Q, offers his advice to owners looking to optimise their yacht for charter. “People see the way myself and my family use our boat and they say, ‘Ah, I would love to do the same thing with my family’ – they too want to holiday aboard, host their friends, have parties and race in regattas, and that’s exactly what we sell,” says VibePetersen. “Q really performs well under sail. She’s also a nightclub, and she’s a holiday home, and you can move her around the world. Nothing can beat that.” It’s important to raise a yacht’s profile and get her ‘out-there’ if you want to secure charter bookings. Vibe-Petersen attended the Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta & Rendezvous and the St Barths Bucket earlier this year with Q, where she raced for the first time, day and the boat was open to partygoers at the event’s famous Yacht-Hop evening.

Ses performances sont excellentes et nous sommes très heureux du résultat”.

Q, listed for charter with Camper & Nicholsons since May 2016, has already been exceptionally busy and this summer is again backto-back with charters, something seldom seen for a large sailing superyacht. “When we bought Q, the first thing we did was have the whole boat refit. We stripped the varnish from the floor and walls, and installed large white sofas in the main saloon, we wanted to create a light, Scandinavian look,” he says. “When we did the refit, we installed new 3Di Sails and had the rig tuned so she was fit for racing, and she performed very well – we were happy with the result.”

In 1493, Columbus spotted, but did not explore, Saba. According to Saba historian Will Johnson, the earliest Europeans were the English arriving around 1580, followed by various European nations. In 1629, Saba became a pirate home base. In 1635, the French took possession of Saba; later Dutch colonists moved to the island. Yet the language remained English and still does. By the 1700s, Saba became famous for its sea captains, many of whom worked for American shipping companies. With the building of “The Road” in the mid-20th century followed by the airport and the pier, Saba began to focus on tourism along with fishing. 144

uests can enjoy relaxing in Gipsy’s 40-square meter main salon, which is accented with a movie theater and spacious dining area. Meals are created with panache in the large, fully equipped galley with its stocked pantry. Those who want a great tan can relax by the yacht’s pool, located on the teak sun deck. Sleeping accommodations for guests include four VIP cabins and en-suite bathrooms, with another four cabins for crew. The stylish owner’s suite comprises the upper deck, with a great sense of privacy yet exclusive views of the sea. The layout lends itself perfectly to the enjoyment of a large group.

Gipsy represents the new OTAM custom-range 35 series, which highlights the Italian shipyard’s engineering capabilities and design experience with their partner, naval architect Umberto Tagliavini. This new design features a very eﬃcient semi-displacement hull that gives Gipsy a top speed of 20 knots and a considerable range of over 2,000 nautical miles at 11 knots.
