Notre petite île de Saint-Barthélemy est vraiment une île magique, un zeste de paradis tropical où la paix règne en maître, et bien des choses étonnantes et merveilleuses peuvent se produire sur un si petit rocher au beau milieu de la mer des Caraïbes.
Bienvenue à bord
2015 a été une année extraordinaire pour notre petit paradis. Le président français, François Hollande nous a honorés de sa visite officielle dans le cadre de sa tournée des territoires d’outre-mer. C’est la première fois en 35 ans qu’un président de la République française s’arrete à Saint Barthélemy, alors que la dernière visite de l’ancien président Valéry Giscard d’Estaing date de 1980.
A cette occasion, Bruno Magras, president du Conseil territorial de SaintBarthélemy, s’est vu remettre les insignes de Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur par le Président Hollande. Un honneur assez rare pour une petite île et un hommage probant à Bruno Magras qui a célébré son 20ème anniversaire à la tête du gouvernement local - il a été élu maire en 1995 et président du conseil territorial le 15 juillet 2007, date à laquelle l’île est devenue une collectivité d’outre-mer. 2016 est pleine de promesses avec un calendrier riche en évènements et en competitions nautiques mémorables, attirant encore plus de bateaux d’exception vers notre petit port qui continue à affirmer son excellence. Welcome aboard Our small island of Saint Barthélemy is truly an island apart, a slice of tropical paradise where peace reigns supreme, and surprising things happen for such a tiny rock in the Caribbean Sea. 2015 was an extraordinary year for our little paradise. French president François Hollande honored us with an official visit as part of his tour of France’s overseas territories. This marked the first time in 35 years that a president of the French Republic stopped by, as the last visit was by Valéry Giscard d’Estaing in 1980. During Hollande’s visit, Bruno Magras was made a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur as the French president presented our island president with the official insignias. Quite a rare honor such a small island and a tribute to Magras as he celebrated his 20th anniversary at the head of the local government —he was elected mayor in 1995 and president of the island council when the island became an overseas territory in 2007. 2016 is full of promise with a busy calendar of regattas bringing exceptional boats to our little port, which continues to prove its excellence. Le navire doit être à jour de ses documents (papiers d’identification du navire et assurances). Assurez-vous que toutes les personnes à bord sont munies des pièces d’identité nécessaires pour entrer sur le territoire de Saint-Barthélemy.

Appelez la capitainerie par VHF Canal 12 avant toute manœuvre.

Aucun navire de passage n'est autorisé à manœuvrer à quai et sur les bouées entre 17h00 et 07h00.
s
Tout navire qui entre et sort du port doit emprunter le chenal d'accès. La vitesse maximale autorisée dans toute la zone portuaire est de 3 noeuds.
s
La baignade, la pêche et tous les sports nautiques doivent s'effectuer en dehors de la zone portuaire en respectant les règles propres à chaque activité.
s
Des bacs sélectifs sont prévus pour le tri des ordures ménagères (verres et canettes directement dans le bac prévu et autres déchets dans un sac en plastique et dans les bacs). Les autres déchets doivent être déposés directement au service de propreté à Public.
s
Les barbecues ne peuvent pas se faire sur les bateaux amarrés à quai ni sur les bouées. Pensez à ne pas déranger votre voisin avec le bruit (musique, travaux...).
s
Il est strictement interdit de rejeter les eaux de fonds de cales dans le port.
s
Nous vous conseillons d’éteindre vos radars.
s
Seul le capitaine ou un membre d’équipage sont autorisés à effectuer les formalités d’entrée ou de sortie du navire.

All documents for the boat must be up-to-date (ID, registration, insurance...). Please be sure that all persons aboard have all necessary documents (ie: passport and visas...) required to enter the territory of St. BarthĂŠlemy.
s
Call the harbormaster's office on VHF channel 12 before making any maneuvers.
s
Boats are not authorized to maneuver at the dock or on buoys at night, between the hours of 5:00pm and 7:00am.
s
All boats that enter and leave the port must use the access channel. The maximum speed allowed in the port zone is three knots.
s
Swimming, fishing, and all nautical sports must take place outside of the port zone, respecting the appropriate rules for each activity.
s
Household trash must be separated for recycling before left in the trash area on the dock (cans and bottles together in the container provided; all other trash in plastic bags then in containers provided). All other trash and large items must be taken directly to the incinerator in Public.
s
BBQs cannot be used aboard boats anchored at the dock or on buoys. Try not to disturb your neighbors with too much noise (music, hammering, etc.).
s
It is strictly forbidden to throw stagnant water from the hull of the boat into the harbor.
s
We recommend that you shut off your radar.
s
Only the captain of the vessel or a member of the crew is authorized to take care of entry and departure clearances.

Morgan Lagravière and Arnaud Jarlegan Pour leur première participation à la Saint-Barth Cata Cup, les spécialistes de la course au large de l’équipe Safran Morgan, Morgan Lagravière et Arnaud Jarlegan (Architectonik), ont remporté cette régate F18. Forts de leur savoir-faire, ils ont su dompter les conditions météorologiques dantesques, et étaient les mieux équipés pour lutter contre des rafales atteignant parfois les 30 nœuds et une mer déchaînée avec des creux de deux mètres. Au moins dix équipages ont abandonné le samedi après-midi en raison de ces mauvaises conditions, et le départ n’a finalement pu être donné le dimanche. Pour des raisons de sécurité, les bateaux ont été rappelés au port après le chavirage d’une douzaine d’entre eux. L’édition 2014 a finalement été dominée par Lagravière et Jarlegan, au coude à coude pour la première place avec Franck Cammas et Matthieu Vandame (ODP1), les vainqueurs de la Cata Cup 2013 revenus défendre leur titre. Ils se sont finalement classés seconds, après avoir emporté le trophée « Design Affairs » le premier jour. Billy Besson et Marie Riou (Nikki Beach) complètent le podium final. Specialists in offshore racing with the Safran team, Morgan Lagravière and Arnaud Jarlegan (Architectonik) took top honors in the Saint-Barth Cata Cup, as first-time participants in this F18 regatta. Their skills gave them an advantage in battling quite challenging weather conditions, as they were the best equipped to deal with gusts of wind reaching 30 knots and high seas with six-foot swells. At least 10 boats abandoned due to these conditions on Saturday afternoon, and eventually it was impossible to race on Sunday. With an eye toward safety, the boats returned to the beach after almost a dozen had capsized in the strong winds. Lagravière and Jarlegan are the two sailors that ultimately dominated the 2014 edition of the regatta, dueling for first place with Franck Cammas and Matthieu Vandame (ODP1), the 2013 Cata Cup winners having returned to defend their title. They finished second overall, after winning the Design Affairs Trophy on day one. Billy Besson and Marie Riou (Nikki Beach) took third place on the final podium. The 20th edition of the New Year’s Eve Parade was held on December 31, 2014, with 16 boats of various sizes on the starting line. Sunny skies and winds up to 19 knots made for some great sailing
La star du jour se prénomme WinWin, un nouveau yacht Baltic 108 ultramoderne réalisé en composite, qui se targue d’une largeur de 7,58 mètres et d’un tirant d’eau maximal de 5,54 mètres. Sa coque élancée est noire, relevée d’un liseré vert à la ligne de flottaison. Le spi, gonflé par les vents tandis que WinWin naviguait vers la ligne d’arrivée barré par Clive Walker, arbore cette même couleur. WinWin a été le plus rapide, effectuant le tour de l’île en 2 heures 6 minutes et 20 secondes. Néanmoins, le record d’une heure 32 minutes et 7 secondes établi en 2004 par Visione, un autre yacht issu des chantiers navals Baltic de 44,84 mètres, tient toujours.

La 20e édition de la New Year’s Eve Parade a eu lieu le 31 décembre 2014, 16 bateaux de diverses tailles s’étant donné rendez-vous sur la ligne de départ. Un ciel dégagé et des vents atteignant 19 nœuds ont offert des conditions idéales de navigation.
The star of the day was WinWin, a new high-tech 108’ Baltic Yacht, built in composite with a beam of 24'87'' and a maximum draft of 18'18''. Her sleek hull is black with a green water line, and the same green is echoed in the spinnaker, which was unfurled as WinWin headed toward the finish line, with skipper Clive Walker at the helm.
Mener WinWin à la victoire était un défi pour Clive Walker, qui a débuté sa carrière nautique comme skipper sur un Performance Swan en 1997. « Navigateur de compétition sur optimiste depuis sa plus tendre enfance et ingénieur industriel de métier : l’association fonctionne à la perfection pour manœuvrer des voiliers », résume-t-il. Mis à l’eau en été 2014, la première course de WinWin marque aussi sa première victoire : « Nous avions prévu de faire le tour quelques fois en guide de test, mais il y avait tellement d’invités à bord qui souhaitaient se détendre que cela ne s’est pas fait », explique Clive Walker. « Ayant participé à la Bucket à plusieurs reprises, je me disais qu’il serait aisé de faire le grand plongeon, mais ce n’est qu’au moment de l’inscription que je me suis rendu compte qu’il serait bien plus compliqué de guider un yacht de cette envergure à travers tous les petits îlots ». Clive Walker ajoute que WinWin “est très rapide de 10 à 15 nœuds au vent, puis 20 à 25 sous le vent. Nous savons maintenant qu’il fait bonne figure dans toutes les conditions, ce qui en fait un bateau de course très agréable. Il a simplement besoin d’une main solide pour le diriger dans la bonne direction. Plus facile à dire qu’à faire » ! Clive Walker estime qu’il aurait dû naviguer sans spinnaker. « En effet, vu l’itinéraire et la direction des vents, nous ne pouvions l’utiliser que pendant une durée limitée. Les bras aussi nous faisaient défaut et c’est la raison pour laquelle nous avons décidé de ne pas essayer d’empanner. Nous avons donc mis du temps à nous élancer, mais bien que la plage d’utilisation du spinnaker était limitée, c’est certainement ce qui nous a permis d’enregistrer le tour le plus rapide de la journée ». « Nous avons vraiment apprécié le format détendu de la St. Barth Parade », poursuit Clive Walker. « Lors des inscriptions, les membres du yacht club nous ont accueillis de manière fort chaleureuse, ce qui a contribué à créer une atmosphère détendue pour notre premier tour de St. Barth. Nous sommes des compétiteurs dans l’âme, mais c’est très rafraichissant de naviguer pour le plaisir avec des marges de sécurité confortables, en mode voile et navigation. Il nous tarde de revenir sur la magnifique île de Saint Barthélémy pour la Bucket et de montrer ce que WinWin a dans le ventre. Un énorme merci au Saint Barth Yacht Club, au port, aux plongeurs, restaurants, boulangeries et tous les locaux qui ont fait en sorte que WinWin se sente incroyablement à l’aise ».

Clive Walker: a winning skipper Sailing WinWin to victory was challenging for Clive Walker, who started his nautical career as a skipper on a Performance Swan in 1997, “As a competitive sailor from the age of seven on optimists and an industrial engineer by trade, the combination works nicely for running sailing yachts,” he notes. Launched in the summer of 2014, WinWin’s first race was also her first win: “We planned to sail around a couple of times as a trial, but in reality with many guests onboard wanting to relax it did not happen,” Walker explains. “As I’ve navigated in the Bucket a few times, I thought it would be easy enough to just jump in the deep end, however I did not realize until registration that the course was more complex for a deep-drafted yacht needing to pass inside all the small islets.” Walker adds that WinWin “is very fast with 10-15 knots upwind, then 20-25 knots downwind. We now know that she is useful in all conditions, which makes her a pleasure to race. She just needs to be pointed in the right direction with good focused hands. Easier said than done!” Walker feels he should have raced without the genacker, “as due to the course and wind direction we had limited time with the kite. We also had a lack of hands, so decided not to try to gybe the kite. So rating with the kite gave us a really late starting time, but even though the kite was short and sweet, it may have given us the fastest lap on the day.” “We all really enjoyed the relaxed format of the St. Barth Parade,” says Walker. “We clearly felt a friendly spirit from all the yacht club members during registration, which set a relaxed tone for our first lap of St. Barth. At heart, we are competitive, but found it so refreshing to just sail casually around with comfortable safety margins—both with sail configurations and navigation. We eagerly plan to return to the beautiful island of St. Barth for the Bucket, and push our feet down firmly on the gas to show the full potential of WinWin. Thank you to the Yacht Club, the Port, the divers, restaurants, bakery, supermarkets, and all the locals who made WinWin feel incredibly welcome.”

Almost No Wind
« C’est la quatrième fois que je participe à la Saint Barth Fun Cup et j’ai enfin gagné », se réjouit Taty Frans. « C’est une sensation incroyable. Antoine et Cyril sont des adversaires redoutables, mais cette fois-ci j’étais le plus rapide ». Chez les femmes, Delphine Cousin s’est, une nouvelle fois, adjugé la victoire. « Je suis très contente de mes résultats, et je me suis bien défendue face aux garçons », relève Delphine Cousin qui s’est classée 21e au scratch. Initialement prévue sur trois jours, la Fun Cup a failli ne pas avoir lieu, les vents étant trop faibles le vendredi 30 et le samedi 31 janvier pour ne serait-ce qu’envisager de donner le départ de la course. Finalement, le vent a suffisamment forci le dimanche, atteignant une moyenne de 15 à 20 nœuds, et les 90 concurrents ont finalement pu mettre leur planche à l’eau et affronter les vagues. « Le résultat final était positif grâce à une magnifique de journée de vent », affirme un Arnaud Daniel, coorganisateur de l’événement, soulagé. « Je suis heureux car tout le monde avait l’air ravi en dépit des mauvaises conditions météorologiques des premiers jours. “This is the fourth time I have participated in the Saint Barth Fun Cup and I have finally won,” says Frans. “It is an incredible feeling. Antoine and Cyril are very serious competitors, but this time I was faster.” In the women’s category, Delphine Cousin once again won the title. “I am very pleased with my results, and I fought hard against the guys as well,” says Cousin, who finished 21st in the overall ratings. Originally planned as a three-day event, it looked as if the Fun Cup might not happen at all, as the winds were too light on Friday and Saturday, January 30 and 31, to even consider racing. The wind whipped up enough on Sunday, averaging 15 to 20 knots, so the 90 competitors were finally able to get on their boards and confront the waves. “The end result was positive, concluding with a fabulous windy day,” says Arnaud Daniel, co-organizer of the event. “I am pleased that everyone seems happy in spite of the weather conditions on the preceding days. Visione a en outre remporté la classe Les Gazelles des Mers, s’adjugeant la deuxième place le vendredi, puis la première le samedi et le dimanche. Il a battu Inoui de Vitters Shipyard, arrivé second, et le P2 de Perini Navi arrivé troisième. Pour la première fois dans l’histoire de la Bucket, deux bateaux, Adela et Elfje, sont arrivés ex aequo à la première place dans la classe Élégantes des Mers. « C’était une situation inhabituelle mais, dans un bel élan de sportivité, les deux bateaux ont accepté cette situation d’égalité », se réjouit Peter Craig, directeur de l’événement et de la course.

Visione was also the class winner for Les Gazelles des Mers, with a second place win on Friday, and first place wins on both Saturday and Sunday, beating Viiters Shipyard’s Inoui for second place and Perini Navi’s P2, which came in third. In the Elegantes des Mers class, for the first time in Bucket history, there was a tie for first place, with Adela and Elfje sharing the top spot. “It was a very unusual situation, and there was good sportsmanship all the way around that resulting in these boats agreeing to the tie,” noted Peter Craig, event director and race chairman.

C’était une année palpitante pour la St. Barth Bucket avec un changement de propriétaire. En effet, quatre des principaux constructeurs de yachts ont pris les rennes de l’événement : Perini Navi, Royal Huisman, Vitters et Rybovich. En outre, pour la deuxième fois de son histoire, la Bucket était agrémentée d’un spectacle aérien. Le premier a eu lieu en 2011 avec quatre avions de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale. Cette fois-ci se ne sont pas moins de huit avions restaurés du Texas Flying Legends Museum et Rod Lewis Air Legends, également de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, qui ont assuré le spectacle dans les airs. Chaque année, la Bucket fait aussi preuve de générosité en effectuant un don à une association caritative de l’île. Cette année, il s’agit d’un chèque de 18 000 euros remis au projet St Barth Children’s With Handicaps et en particulier à SESSAD Coralita, basé à St Martin, avec le soutien local du Lions et du Rotary club. La prochaine édition de la St Barth Bucket aura lieu du 17 au 20 mars 2016.

It was an exciting year for The St. Barth Bucket, with a shift in ownership, as four of the major yacht builders took on the stewardship role for the event: Perini Navi, Royal Huisman, Vitters, and Rybovich. It was also the second time that The Bucket was accompanied by an air show. The first was in 2011 with four WWII planes, this time eight restored WWII planes from the Texas Flying Legends Museum and Rod Lewis Air Legends took part in a spectacular display of vintage warbirds. Each year The Bucket shows its generosity by giving a donation to a worthy charity on the island. This year it was a check for 18,000 euros to the St Barth Children’s With Handicaps Project, with the funds going to SESSAD Coralita, based in St Martin, with local support by the Lions and Rotary clubs. The next edition of the St Barth Bucket will be held March 17-20, 2016.

Garth Brewer, qui a grandi en Afrique du sud, tient la barre de Visione. Skipper vétéran avec 20 ans de carrière, il barre Visione aux côtés d’Hasso Plattner depuis 2002, date à laquelle son yacht de luxe de 45 mètres a été construit par les chantiers navals Baltic Yachts. Taillé pour la course, Visione a établi le record du tour de l’île de St Barthélémy lors de la New Year’s Eve Parade en 2004, remporté la Superyacht Cup Antigua 2010 et la Saint Barth Bucket en 2015. « Visione a été conçu pour être rapide et puissant », affirme Garth Brewer. « L’accent a toujours été placé sur ses performance sous voile et la nécessité de réduire le poids. Comme la performance d’un yacht dépend grandement de son déplacement, Visione a été construit en gardant constamment cette nécessité à l’esprit. Bien entendu sa vitesse tient aussi à sa coque rapide et est particulièrement performant en navigation au vent. Barrer Visione est un réel privilège et nous apprécions tous de participer au projet ». Alors qu‘il déteint toujours le record du tour de l’île le plus rapide établi en 2004, Garth Brewer concède : « Je pense que le record pourrait être battu et le sera à un moment ou un autre. Avec des vents avoisinant les 16-18 nœuds et une tentative sérieuse, je pense qu’il peut être battu ».
Quand il parle de St Barthélémy, le skipper ne peut cacher son enthousiasme : « Les paysages sont splendides et l’eau somptueuse. Of course, she is also a fast shape and performs particularly well upwind. Sailing on Visione is a privilege and we all appreciate being part of the project.”
At the helm
Still holding the around-the-island record set 2004, Brewer comments: “I think the record could and will be broken at some point. With 16-18 knots of wind and a serious attempt, it can be broken.” In terms of sailing in Saint Barth, the skipper is enthusiastic: “The scenery is beautiful and the water is fantastic. We have also been very fortunate having great winds at nearly every regatta,” he says. “In general St Barth offers a perfect location and backdrop to sail some of the largest and most spectacular yachts in the world. On the shore we all appreciate the quality of the restaurants and the services, and the island is also very well presented.”

Katarina Baliova Avec l’âme d’une artiste et l’œil d’une photographe, Katarina Baliova a développé sa propre vision impressionniste, presque surréaliste. Née en Slovaquie et basée à Londres, Angleterre, l’étudiante en beaux-arts consacre son talent à la photographie et reste une traditionnaliste qui préfère le film aux pixels, joue avec les tons et les couleurs dans l’appareil photo plutôt que dans la chambre noire, « zoome et dézoome », dépose des choses devant la lentille, crée des superpositions de couches.

With the eye of an artist and the lens of a photographer, Katarina Baliova has developed her own impressionistic, almost surreal, sense of vision. Born in Slovakia and based in London, England, this student of the beaux arts has transposed her talent to photography and remains a traditionalist who shoots with film, rather than pixels, playing around with toning and color in the camera rather than the darkroom, zooming in and out, laying things in front of the lens, creating overlays. Her inspiration also comes from her interests in dance, music and psychology, and she “strives to capture not just the moment but also a flow of emotions, seen through reflections, movement, light, water, textures,” she explains, as an artist who looks beyond what is obvious. Baliova admits that one of her favorite places to shoot is St Tropez, where she admires the sea and the boats. “The colors are happening right before you. I use different kinds of lenses to catch the emotion and the spirit of the moment when shooting on boats,” she says, referring to her series of Nautical Dream images, that are a perfect example of her combination of painterly images and photography. After an exhibit of her Nautical Dream collection at the Yacht Club in Monaco in late 2015, Baliova hopes that the images will sail around the world like the boats themselves. Having discovered St Barth during the Bucket Regatta in March 2015, Baliova is bound to turn her lens on the nautical scene here as well, as the photographer continues her impressionistic journey through the world of yachts.

Rambler 88 A Big Winner
Dans la classe Maxi 1, la course a donné lieu à la lutte attendue entre Rambler 88 et Comanche. Rambler a gagné trois des quatre régates en temps compensé et le propriétaire David George est reparti avec la somptueuse montre Richard Mille RM 60-01 Chronographe Flyback Regatta présentée par le principal sponsor de l’événement. Si Comanche est certainement le plus rapide des deux en temps réel, le bateau de 30 mètres appartenant à Jim Clark et Kristy Hinze Clark a été handicapé par son classement CSA de 1737. Même avec le très expérimenté Ken Read à la barre, Comanche n’est arrivé que quatrième de sa classe, tandis que Bella Mente de Hap Fauth s’est adjugé la seconde place et Lucky de Bryon Erhart, la troisième.
An expected battle in the Maxi 1 class between Ramber 88 and Comanche saw Rambler winning three out of four races in corrected time, and owner David George taking home the beautiful Richard Mille RM 60-01 Chronographe Flyback Regatta watch, presented by the event’s principal sponsor. Comanche may be the faster of the two boats in real time, but the 100-footer belonging to Jim Clark and Kristy Hinze Clark was handicapped by its CSA rating of 1.737. Even with expert sailor Ken Read at the helm, Comanche came in fourth in the class, with Hap Fauth’s Bella Mente second and Bryon Erhart’s Lucky third.

C’est la première fois que nous nous sommes élancés à ses côtés depuis la mise à l’eau du bateau, nous savions donc que ce serait sympa. Nous ne pensions jamais gagner à la faveur du système de handicap - le bateau n’a pas été construit pour ça. Pour être honnête, le bateau n’a d’ailleurs pas du tout été conçu pour la régate, nous avions toujours davantage pensé à la course en haute mer. Donc sortir et remporter toutes les courses en temps réel était un excellent résultat pour nous ». Ken Read est par ailleurs un vrai fan des Voiles et de la navigation à St Barthélémy : « C’est un magnifique événement, et j’aime toujours y participer. La mer est splendide, l’eau joueuse et la ligne de départ fournie. Que rêver de mieux » ?

To be honest the boat wasn’t really built for round the cans racing at all, we always had offshore in our minds with this one, so going out and winning line honors in all the races was a great result for us.”As for Les Voiles and sailing in Saint Barth, Read is a fan: “It is a great event, I always enjoy sailing it. The sea is beautiful, the weather comes out to play and it is usually a great turn out of boats,” he says. “What could be better?”

All about a boat Cette année, un des temps forts de la West Indies Regatta était la première mondiale du film, Vanishing Sail, réalisé par Alexis Andrews, qui est venu à Saint Barthélémy en portant plusieurs casquettes : celles d’organisateur de régate, réalisateur et photographe. Le film est un documentaire magnifiquement tourné ayant pour sujet le constructeur de bateaux Alwyn Enoe, filmé en train de construire Exodus, son bateau de 13 mètres, sur la plage du village de Windward sur l’île de Carriacou. Le film a été projeté lors de la cérémonie de clôture de la 20e édition du St Barth Film Festival sur le quai à Gustavia, tandis qu’Exodus et les autres sloops faisaient leur lente entrée dans le port. Profiter de la présence des bateaux à mesure que le film se déroulait constituait une de ces rares et exceptionnelles expériences caribéennes et le point d’orgue d’une parfaite nuit sous les étoiles. The winner, for the third time, was the 42’ restored Carriacou sloop Summer Cloud, hand built by Baldwin De Roche in Petit Martinique and racing against such beauties as Genesis and Exodus, both built in Carriacou by Alwyn Enoe. “Summer Cloud is a cool, fast boat that just gets out in front of everybody,” says Alexis Andrews, regatta organizer and owner of Genesis. “Also Summer Cloud doesn’t have an engine. These boats always sailed better and smoother before they had engines.”
This year, a highlight of the West Indies Regatta was the world premiere of the film, Vanishing Sail, directed by Alexis Andrews, who came to Saint Barth wearing several hats including regatta organizer, filmmaker, and photographer. COBRA Concevoir un tender ? Son agenda ne lui permettait pas d’accepter, mais pour Patrick Raffeneau, directeur de l’agence PRD (Interior Design et Architecture) et associé dans l’agence Anaconda Architecture à Saint Barthélemy, il était impossible de refuser.
Design a tender? He was really way too busy, but for Patrick Raffeneau, director of his own firm, PRD (Interior Design and Architecture), and a partner at Anaconda Architecture in Saint Barthélemy, it was an offer he simply could not refuse.
Ce projet résonne en effet comme « une évidence ». Il y a eu le temps des maquettes pendant l’enfance. Il est ensuite devenu collectionneur, en faisant l’acquisition et en rénovant une épave, un Chris-Craft Cobra des années 50, un prototype baptisé Aristote S., dont il est tombé amoureux à cause « des courbes et du design, malgré les 5 cm de mousse qui le recouvrait », sourit-il.
That this project is perfect for Raffeneau is like “stating the obvious.” The designer has been interested in model boats since he was a child. He then became a collector by buying and renovating a veritable wreck, a Chris-Craft Cobra from the 1950s. A prototype baptized Aristote S., which he fell in love with because of “its curves and its design, in spite of the two inches of moss covering it,” he says with a smile.
Today, at the request of a client, it’s his turn to design his own boat: a 29-foot tender with an electric motor. As an extension of his architectural projects, he is approaching this experience with the excitement of a “first time,” and a chance to reconnect with “design for design sake.”
Aujourd’hui, à la demande d’un client, c’est à lui de concevoir son propre bateau : un tender de 9 mètres au moteur électrique. En marge des projets d’architecture, il aborde cet exercice avec l’excitation des premières fois, et celle de renouer avec le « design pur et dur ».
Aussi, pas question d’être influencé. Il ne regarde pas les tenders existants, c’est seulement au moment où il dessine qu’il cherche la forme, « quelque chose d’assez épuré, avec des lignes plutôt anciennes, une étrave droite, légèrement couchée en avant ». Ensuite, son expérience de navigateur le guide. L’ancre sera totalement invisible, immergée sous le bateau et actionnée par un bouton. Incorporée ainsi au design de la coque, elle donne, sur plan, un air familier de mammifère marin. Sur l’eau, elle ne risque plus d’endommager le yacht. Idem pour les pare battages, ils sont incorporés à la coque, invisibles et actionnés à distance. Enfin, à l’avant de la proue, un trou traversant, totalement transparent la journée, s’illuminera le soir avec un système OLED pour les feux de navigation. Sur mer ou sur terre, la même philosophie : « forme et détails maitrisés ».

There is no question of his being influenced by the past. By not looking at existing tenders, his own shape began to emerge the moment he sat down to design it; “something that is sleek, with almost classical lines, a straight hull, slightly lower in the front.” In addition, his proficiency as a sailor helped guide his decisions. The anchor will be completely invisible, submerged beneath the boat and activated by a button. With such external elements incorporated into the design, the hull almost takes on the shape of a marine mammal, which when on the water will not risk any damage to the yacht. The same is true for the fenders, which are also incorporated into the hull, invisible and activated remotely. A final design touch, at the front of the bow, an open hole cutting through, totally transparent during the day yet illuminated at night with an OLED system of navigational lights. On water, or on land, the same philosophy prevails: “mastery of form and detail.”
Sa méthode de travail ? L’amour des courbes et des proportions. Et pour chaque projet, « une quête d’amélioration des détails », ajoute-t-il. Du coup, pour chaque villa, il se bat au cm près pour la construction et au mm près pour le mobilier, une jonction de porte, le détail d’une charnière... Car, qu’il s’agisse d’une maison classique, de la villa My Way, ou d’un bateau, c’est le prix à payer pour espérer concevoir quelque chose d’intemporel. Et de poursuivre, « si ça paraît simple et tout le monde dit « moi aussi j’aurais pu le dessiner », alors c’est réussi ».

His manner of working? That love of contours and the proper proportions. And for each project, “the quest to improve every last detail.” As a result, for each villa, he fights down to the last foot during construction and to the last inch for the furnishings, from the fit of a doorjamb to a hinge… Whether it’s about designing a traditional house, the villa My Way, or a boat, it’s the price that must be paid to hope to create something that remains timeless. “And if it seems simple,” he continues, “and everybody says ‘I could have designed that,’ then it’s a success.”

L’intérieur conçu par Studio Massari sublime ce yacht Benetti de 60 mètres construit en 2009. Pour Alessandro Massari, travailler avec une cliente qui avait une idée très claire de ce qu’elle voulait et de la manière avec laquelle elle souhaitait utiliser son yacht constituait à la fois un défi et une expérience gratifiante. Le résultat final est un design ultra personnalisé mariant le style intérieur luxueux de Fendi à une structure de coque en acier et aluminium. 134
Le design extérieur classique est signé Stefano Natucci, un designer qui n’en est pas à sa première collaboration avec Benetti. L’intérieur porte la marque des designers de Fendi, en plus de celle de Studio Massi, notamment pour ce qui est des accessoires, de l’utilisation du cuir, de l’éclairage et des meubles raffinés.
Lady Lara Interiors by Studio Massari make this 196’ (60 meter), 2009 Benetti Yacht a winner! Alessandro Massari found the project challenging yet rewarding, working closely with a client who had a clear idea of what she wanted and how she wished to use her yacht. The end result is a custom design concept that embraces the luxurious Fendi style inside of a steel hull and aluminum yacht structure. The classic exteriors are by frequent Benetti designer and collaborator Stefano Natucci, yet the interiors have the touch of Fendi designers in addition to Studio Massari, including the accessories, use of leather, lovely lighting, and furniture.

In 2015, MB&F celebrates its 10th anniversary and what a decade it has been for the world’s first ever horological concept laboratory: 10 years of hyper-creativity; 10 remarkable calibres forming the base of the critically acclaimed Horological Machines and Legacy Machines for which MB&F has become renowned. After 15 years managing prestigious watch brands, Maximilian Büsser resigned from his Managing Director position at Harry Winston in 2005 to create MB&F – Maximilian Büsser & Friends. MB&F is an artistic and micro-engineering laboratory dedicated to designing and crafting small series of radical concept watches by bringing together talented horological professionals that Büsser both respects and enjoys working with. In 2007, MB&F unveiled their first Horological Machine, HM1. HM1’s sculptured, three-dimensional case and beautifully finished Engine inside set the standard for the idiosyncratic Horological Machines that have followed: HM2, HM3, HM4, HM5, HM6 and HMX – all Machines that tell the time, rather than Machines to tell the time.
In 2011, MB&F launched their round-cased Legacy Machine collection. These more classical pieces – classical for MB&F, that is – pay tribute to 19th century watchmaking excellence by reinterpreting complications from the great horological innovators of yesteryear to create contemporary objets d'art. LM1 and LM2 were followed by LM101, the first MB&F Machine to feature a movement developed entirely in-house. Since then, MB&F alternate between launching contemporary, resolutely unconventional Horological Machines and historically-inspired Legacy Machines. And there have been distinguished accolades to remember along the journey so far. To name a few, at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève in 2012, MB&F were awarded the Public Prize (voted for by horology fans) and the Best Men’s Watch Prize (voted for by the professional jury) for Legacy Machine No.1. At the 2010 Grand Prix, MB&F won Best Concept and Design Watch for the HM4 Thunderbolt. Last but not least, in 2015 MB&F received for the HM6 Space Pirate a “Red Dot: Best of the Best” award – the top prize at the international Red Dot Awards.

LEGACY MACHINE N°2 WHITE GOLD LM2’s dual flying balance wheels, suspended high above the dial from four gracefully arcing arms, may at first appear futuristic. But make no mistake; LM2 is a timepiece tracing its lineage back over 250 years to some of the greatest watchmakers: Abraham-Louis Breguet, Ferdinand Berthoud and Antide Janvier, who all constructed clocks and watches with two balances. Oscillating on high, the double balance wheels of LM2 were inspired by one of the rarest mechanisms in watchmaking: the dual regulator. And rarer still, the average rates of LM2’s dual regulators are transmitted by a differential to a single gear train. HORLOGICAL MACHINE N°5 RT The unmistakable wedge-shaped case of HM5 is a direct homage to the sleek supercars of the 1970s, with louvres on their rear windows. The slide-operated louvres on HM5 open to allow light in, to charge the Super-LumiNova numbers on the time disks. An optical-grade sapphire prism reflects the hour and minutes so that they display vertically, and a convex lens magnifies the numerals by 20% for improved legibility. The vertical forward-facing display makes HM5 an excellent driver’s watch as there is no need to lift your wrist from the steering wheel to read the display.
