Regattas, marinas, boat yards, and active marine parks bring people from around the world to the island for competitive racing, diving, chartering, and protection from tropical storms. With this 15th anniversary issue of Harbour Sint Maarten- Saint Martin we hope to evoke this strong nautical essence of the island. Ten Boats in the St Barth Bucket Bliss. Destination. Ganesha. Genevieve. Koo. Lady B. Moonbird. Salperton IV. Twizzle. Zefria. Ten of the magnificent yachts in the 2012 St Barth Bucket were designed by Ed Dubois, an Englishman whose love for the sea has translated into a top-notch career as a naval architect. “I have loved boats since I was a kid,” says Dubois, who first attended the Bucket back in 2000 with just one of his boats in the race. As the race grew in stature, so did his presence. “The Bucket is my boat show. I bring potential clients here—some are repeat clients who have become friends—and the Bucket gives us a stage on which to act our play.” In 2012, a new class was added to the Bucket fleet, Les Mademoiselles des Mers, with 11 entries, including the 10 Dubois yachts, allowing them to race against each other.

After learning the ropes at a sailing camp, Dubois got his first 16’ wooden sailboat at the age of 16 and kept it at a sailing club in the Thames Estuary. “I decided to become a yacht designer at the age of 17 with all the naïve assumptions of someone that age,” he admits. Luckily for Dubois, there was a three-year college course in naval architecture adapted to yacht design in Southampton, England, the country’s yachting epicenter. He graduated in 1974, worked for Alan Buchanan naval architects in the Channel Islands, and his career was launched.

L’Amour de la voile “À 5 ans, je construisais des modèles que je lançais sur Round Pond à Londres” se rappelle Ed Dubois, dont la mère et le grand-père ont des attaches à la Royal Navy. Initié à la voile en colonie de vacances, Dubois acquit son premier voilier en bois de 5 mètres à l’âge de 16 ans ; navire qu’il garde dans un club de voile situé à l’estuaire de la Tamise. “J’ai décidé de devenir concepteur de yachts à 17 ans, fort des certitudes naïves de cet âge-là,” avoue-t-il. Heureusement pour lui, un cours d’architecture navale adapté à la conception des yachts est oﬀert dans un collège de Southampton, l’épicentre de la voile en Angleterre. Diplômé en 1974, Dubois rejoint les architectes navals d’Alan Buchanan, dans les îles de la Manche. Sa carrière était lancée.

Bigger and bigger Since his early days in the industry, the biggest changes in yacht design have been size and materials, especially as when Dubois began the biggest sailing yachts were the maxis at 70’ to 80’. Illustrating the dramatic shift in size, Dubois is currently designing what should be the largest sailboat ever built when it is finished in 2016: at 100 meters (330’) in length with a 125-meter mast (410’) comprising 17 tons of carbon fiber, the construction of this boat will require more than one million man hours. “The challenge is how to build and control the sails on a boat that size,” he explains, clearly intrigued by the challenge. Hopefully this Dubois yacht will also make it to the Bucket regatta on an island Dubois is very fond of: “Saint Barth is the only island in the West Indies that has any sophisticated style,” he says, looking out at the docks where ten of his “babies” were waiting to race. One of them, the sleek 44.7-meter Lady B would win its class and place second overall in the Bucket, putting a Dubois yacht squarely in the winner’s circle.n

Toujours plus grands Depuis ses débuts, Ed Dubois est le témoin des plus grands changements dans la conception des yachts en termes de dimensions et de matériaux. Au départ, les plus grands d’entre eux mesuraient entre 21 et 25 mètres (70 à 80 pieds). Pour donner une idée de l’évolution exponentielle des dimensions, il est à noter que Dubois élabore actuellement le voilier qui sera le plus grand jamais construit. Lorsqu’il sera achevé en 2016, ce dernier mesurera 100 mètres de long (330 pieds) et sera dôté d’un mât de 125 mètres (410 pieds). Utilisant 17 tonnes de fibre de carbone, le voilier exigera plus d’un million d’heures de travail pour sa construction. “Le défi consiste à savoir à la fois fabriquer puis contrôler les voiles d’un navire d’une telle dimension,” explique Dubois, manifestement exalté par la tâche. Espérons que ce nouveau voilier Dubois participera également à la Bucket dans une île que l’achitecte naval aﬀectionne tout particulièrement. “St Barth est la seule île antillaise « sophistiquée »” dit-il, en lorgnant le quai où dix de ses “bébés” attendent le début de la course. L’un d’entre eux, Lady B qui s’étire sur 44,7 mètres, gagnera dans sa classe. Arrivé second dans l’ensemble, il placera un voilier Dubois au centre du cercle des vainqueurs de la Bucket. n

Simon Le Bon, a passionate sailor, Nick Rhodes and Roger Taylor were thrilled to accept Panerai's invitation to return to Antigua and sail again on Eilean, winner of the Woodstock Restoration Trophy in Vintage Class A for Best Restored Yacht. Among stars of the sailing world was America's Cup skipper Dennis Connor, sailing with Carlo Falcone aboard Mariella, winner of the Vintage A Class. Other winners include: Saphaedra (Panerai Prize for First Overall Classic Class); Rebecca (Spirit of Tradition Class A); and Dorade (First Place in Vintage Class B and overall winner in the Concours d'Elégance). And once again, the classic races in Antigua underscored Panerai's commitment to the art of traditional sailing.n

The St. Maarten Marine Park surrounds the entire Dutch side from Oyster Pond to Cupecoy Bay, encompassing some of the last pristine marine locations on the island. Twenty-eight various dive sites include natural and man-made reefs as well a few shipwrecks, such as Proselyte reef, a wonderful example of a historical wreck with artifacts. In Saint Martin, the Réserve Naturelle plays an important role in the preservation of the underwater world and important natural sites on the French side of the island, so that no matter where you dive you might even find a mermaid along with the magnificent panorama of underwater flora and fauna.n

Récemment, l’Esmeralda Resort à Orient Bay a investi 2.5 millions de dollars dans une rénovation au cours de laquelle chacune des 17 villas a été repeinte à l’intérieur comme à l’extérieur de couleurs pastel reposantes. Dans toutes les salles de bains les glaces, les lavabos et la robinetterie ont été remplacés et des douches effet pluie installées. La nuit, un éclairage extérieur entièrement refait embellit la propriété.
