17th of September 1755. In the offices of the solicitor Mr. Choisy, a young Master Watchmaker from Geneva named Jean-Marc Vacheron is about to hire his first apprentice. This agreement is the first known reference to the founding watchmaker of a prestigious dynasty and it represents the establishment of Vacheron Constantin, the oldest watchmaking manufacturer in the world in continuous operation. Benetti reigns as one of the oldest luxury motor yacht builders in the world. Launched by Lorenzo Benetti in 1873, the company began building wooden boats for local and international trade His sons, Gino and Emilio, took over the management of the boatyard, changing its name to Fratelli Benetti and building a far-reaching reputation. After WWII, with the disappearance of commercial sailing vessels built from wood, Benetti began producing pleasure craft made from steel. Then in the early 1960s the boatyard produced its first luxury mega yachts.

YACHTS This lovely 151’ yacht (46m) was designed both as a personal family yacht and a perfect charter boat for up to 10 guests. Its contemporary concept marks the perfect balance between great spatial comfort and highly functional technical infrastructures. Great attention was paid to the smallest detail with every element reviewed to ensure its integration into the project. Exterior design is by Stefano Natucci, and details include a mosaic swimming pool accessible to everyone, adults and children alike, with additional handrails and side stern platforms to provide easy access to the sea.

The interiors mix luxury materials such as steel, leather, marble, and wood, combined beautifully for elegant surroundings at sea. The high-gloss woods include Tineo with small contrasting accents in Ebony, to create a warm environment with oﬀ-white leather and back-painted glass that adds a sense of depth. The soft lighting adds to the overall ambiance created by Argent Design and Galeazzi Design.

A bevy of classic beauties showed off their grace and elegance in the 2014 Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, which takes place in late April every year, sponsored by Panerai. The breezes were light but the competition was stiff in some of the classes, with victory decided in the last race. Carlo Falcone’s Alfred Mylne-designed ketch, Mariella, won the last race to take Vintage Class A, one point ahead of Scott Franz’s Herreshoff 72, Ticonderoga. In Vintage Class B, the last race was also the decider for Gerald Rainer, whose classic 65’ Herreschoff, Mary Rose, celebrated a welldeserved win. Vintage Class C had some outstanding competitors, with Michael Jarrald’s British 66’ Cutter, Lily Maid, the winner. Une flotte de voiliers traditionnels de toute beauté a fait étalage de sa grâce et de son élégance à l’occasion de l’Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta de 2014, qui a lieu chaque année fin Avril et qui est sponsorisée par Panerai. On a pu assister à une compétition acharnée sur une brise légère. La victoire décisive s’est souvent fait attendre jusqu´à la dernière manche. Le ketch de Carlo Falcone, Mariella, conçu par Alfred Mylne, a remporté la victoire dans la classe Vintage A, un point devant Ticonderoga, le Herreshoﬀ 72 de Scott Franz. Dans la classe Vintage B, la dernière manche s’est également révélée décisive pour Gerald Rainer, dont le classique Herreschoﬀ 65, Mary Rose a remporté une victoire bien méritée. La classe Vintage C n’était pas non plus exempte de formidables concurrents, et Michael Jarrald a remporté la victoire avec son cotre britannique de 20 mètres, Lily Maid. 69

The next Antigua Classic Regatta takes place April 16-21, 2015, with the classic beauties once again unfurling their sails to the wind.

Early March means regatta madness in Sint Maarten, where the 34th annual Heineken Regatta was held March 6-9, 2014. Sailors from around the world gather to test their skills on a fleet of 210 boats divided into 20 classes. Une ambiance de folie règne toujours au début du mois de mars à St Martin où s’est déroulée la 34e édition annuelle de la Heineken Regatta du 6 au 9 mars 2014. Des navigateurs du monde entier se rassemblent pour mettre leur talent à l’épreuve sur une flotte de 210 bateaux, divisée en 20 classes. Le dernier jour de la régate s’est révélé être le plus passionnant puisque dans la majorité des classes, les résultats dépendaient de la toute dernière manche. Les maxi yachts, les monocoques ainsi que les multicoques ont envoyé leur spi coloré au vent portant et ont savouré chaque instant de cette régate sur la mer des Caraïbes. Cet évènement annuel n’a fait que renforcer le charme de l’île ainsi que sa position de leader dans le monde des yachts. La 35e édition de l’Heineken Regatta aura lieu du 5 au 8 mars 2015.

Top prize for El Ocaso Rich Wessland and his J/122 El Ocaso were the winners of the top prize, the St. Maarten-Saint Martin Cup for the regatta's Most Worthy Performance Overall. Winner of CSA class 4 (the largest class with 18 entries) El Ocaso beat Robert Armstrong’s J/100, Bad Girl by just two points to secure the victory.

Rich Wessland et son J 122 El Ocaso ont remporté le premier prix, la Coupe de St Martin pour la meilleure performance toute catégorie confondue. Vainqueur de la classe CSA 4 (la classe la plus importante avec 18 concurrents), El Ocaso a remporté la victoire de deux points sur le J 100 de Robert Armonstrong, Bad Girl.

Let’s hear it for the kids Winning the CSA9 class were the young sailors from Sint Maarten Yacht Club’s Youth Sailing Team. Sailing a Beneteau First Class 10, they also won the Sint Maarten Yacht Club Cup for the Most Worthy Performance. They were also awarded the St. Maarten Local Youth Challenge Cup, which was presented by Lorraine Talmi from the St. Maarten Marine Trades Association (SMMTA). Proof that the future of sailing is safe in Sint Maarten, and that many years of great racing are on the horizon.

Best in class Racing for two days, May 24 and 25, 2014, the boats in the 10th annual Captain Oliver’s Regatta were divided into two main classes, Racing Monohull and Cruising Monohull. In the racing class, top honors went to Budget Marine Gill, a Melges 24, which was deemed Most Worthy Boat, with Kick’Em Jenny 2, a Melges 32, coming in second, and third place going to Island Water World, also a Melges 24. And the racing was of the caliber envisioned by Captain Oliver himself (the late Olivier Lange) who loved mixing “joie de vivre” with great sailing.

Top boat in the Cruising Monohull class was Raphael Magras’ 34’ Maelia, from Saint Barth, and a boat to watch on the local racing circuit. Spirit, a Swan 65, took second place, while Sir Bobby Velasquez’s Beneteau L'Esperance came in third. Another Saint Barth boat, Raymond Magras’ Speedy Nemo, put in a good performance—finishing fourth. For a small regatta, Captain Oliver’s is fun, and feisty, and on the horizon for another competitive edition in 2015.

La 10e édition annuelle de la Captain Oliver’s Regatta s’est déroulée sur deux jours, du 24 au 25 Mai 2014, avec deux classes principales de voiliers concourants, les monocoques de course et les monocoques de croisière. Parmi les monocoques de course, Budget Marine Gill, un Melges 24, s’est auréolé de gloire en raflant le prix du meilleur voilier tandis que Kick’Em Jenny 2, un Melges 32, a obtenu la seconde place. La troisième place est revenue au Melges 24, Island Water World. L’ambiance de la régate était telle que l’aurait souhaitée Captain Oliver (de son vrai nom Olivier Lange), qui adorait profiter d’une belle régate dans la « joie de vivre. »

Maelia, le monocoque de 34 pieds de Raphael Magras, venu de St Barth, s’est illustré en remportant la première place dans la classe monocoque de croisière. Il s’agit définitivement d’un voilier à surveiller de près lors des prochaines régates locales. Spirit, un Swan 65, a raflé la seconde place tandis que le Bénéteau L’Esperance de Sir Bobby Velasquez est arrivée en troisième position. Un autre voilier de St Barth, le Speedy Nemo de Raymond Magras, a oﬀert une belle performance en décrochant la quatrième place. Captain Oliver’s est une régate conviviale qui s’est déroulée dans une ambiance festive et l’on attend déjà avec impatience la prochaine édition en 2015.

SAILS INTO THE FUTURE WITH PERINI NAVI

Power broker Un homme d’affaire avisé One of the men behind the scenes—and the sails—of Perini Navi is Bruce Brakenhoff, who runs the prestigious Italian shipyard’s operations in the United States. Based in Newport, RI, Brakenhoff set sail with the company in 1997 when its American branch was launched. Brakenhoff was not a newcomer to the yachting industry by any means, and explains: “My father, Bruce Brakenhoff Sr., was a yacht broker for over 50 years with the company, Bartram & Brakenhoff, which he founded.” Brakenhoff worked for his father on and off, did a stint with Little Harbor Yacht Brokers from 1994-96, where he was involved in the sale of a couple of new Perini Navi yachts. “I spent a lot of time with the guys at Perini Navi,” he recalls. “They felt comfortable with me and we became very close friends.” It was a natural transition for the young yacht broker to represent Perini Navi and become their first point of contact in the US. Almost 20 years later, Brakenhoff still proudly represents the Perini Navi stable and enjoys liaising with the boat owners. “There is usually an event in their lives when their clock tells them it’s time to buy a boat, like a big birthday or they sell their company,” he confides. “We take care of every detail from the sale to the design and build, from personalized details on one of our standard models, or a total custom package with a naval architect.”

Behind the Bucket La Bucket : une occasion unique A stellar event for Brakenhoff is the St Barth Bucket, which provides a great stage for the Perini Navi yachts to strut their stuff. “We host an open house in a villa every night, with a chef from Italy and great local bartenders and waitstaff. It’s a great opportunity to hang out with the team. The villa is like the Perini Navi club house,” notes Brakenhoff, emphasizing that Milena Perini, wife of owner Fabio Perini, is the company’s secret weapon in showing hospitality to their customers and friends.

At the 2014 Bucket, there were seven Perini Navi yachts, including the new launch, Seahawk, which won the Perini Navi Cup for best racing results at the regatta. “We love the camaraderie at the Bucket with the owners, clients, and friends,” adds Brakenhoff. “We bring in racing crews for this event and the boats get to use their big spinnakers. We also want to make sure the owners have fun and that the yachts are well sailed as well as safe. These are not usually racing boats, but that’s what makes the Bucket so special. Just participating is great, but if they win—they’re over the moon.” For Brakenhoff, “St Barth is our favorite place on earth. The people who live here make it special, and it’s intimate in a good way. We love the beaches, the little houses, the great food.” As for the future of Perini Navi, “we will continue to do what we do best,” affirms Brakenhoff. “The Bucket allows of us to invite valued friends and past and potential future owners to show them one exciting part of owning a giant yacht, as well as show them the Perini Navi hospitality in this wonderful place that we all love so much.”

C’est déjà formidable de participer à cet évènement, mais lorsque les Perini Navi remportent la victoire, c’est véritablement magique. Brakenhoff considère St Barth comme « le plus bel endroit sur terre. Les gens qui y vivent en font un endroit spécial, intime et personnel dans le bon sens du terme. Nous aimons les plages, les petites maisons et la grande cuisine. » Quand à l’avenir de Perini Navi, « nous continuerons à faire ce que nous faisons le mieux, » affirme Brakenhoff. Flying High Yacht consultant/broker Mark Elliott has a secret weapon, a Cessna185 seaplane he uses to hop from island to island, yacht to yacht, client to client. “I can land at most any anchorage and taxi right next to the yacht,” says Elliott, who serves as a broker and consultant for International Yacht Collection, running the St Maarten oﬃce in the winter, and heading to Newport, RI, and Monaco in the summer.

“I use the seaplane as a fun tool, to take clients to any boat in our charter fleet, deliver contracts for sale or charter, or even spare parts,” Elliott explains, noting that his helicopter is a similar tool, but not that many yachts have helipads. With its amphibious floats made of fiberglass impervious to salt water, the six-seater Cessna is based in St Barth in the winter (ironically one of the islands where landing in the harbor is prohibited). “I am based in the Caribbean from December through May, spending mid-week in the oﬃce in St Maarten working with captains and crews, then long weekends in St Barth where the owners cruise,” he notes. “I could meet them in New York wearing a suit and tie, or for a drink at Nikki Beach or La Plage. The relaxed atmosphere in the Caribbean is much better!” Elliott has been an avid pilot since he was a teenager. “I started washing planes at the age of 12, and flying at 13,” he recalls. “The seaplane being based in St Barth, with the oﬃce in St Maarten really gives me an edge, I am out there in the thick of it, providing the best possible service to my clients. And diving from the plane to catch lobsters is pretty cool.” With the addition of a new crew placement division in St Maarten, IYC is the only full-service, large yacht sales and charter company in the Caribbean. “We want to be where our clients are and be able to meet their needs,” says Elliott, who like his clients, loves St Barth: “A first-world island, great restaurants, great shopping for clothing and there is nothing like the beaches! Like the T-shirt says, “I feel free in St Barth.” I drive around on a scooter or in an electric car and feel as if the island is my private playground.”

Le pilote des Caraïbes Mark Elliott, courtier et consultant dans le domaine des yachts, dispose d’une arme secrète, un hydravion Cessna 185 dont il se sert pour voyager d’îles en îles, pour faire la navette entre les yachts et ses clients. « Je peux amerrir juste à côté des yachts, dans pratiquement chaque mouillage et à proximité d’une station de taxi. » aﬃrme Elliott, qui travaille comme consultant et comme courtier pour l’entreprise International Yacht Collection. En hiver il dirige les bureaux de l’entreprise à St Martin et vole en direction de Newport, Rhodes Island et Monaco en été. « Je me sers de l’hydravion comme d’un outil divertissant pour emmener les clients jusqu’à nos yachts de charter, pour établir des contrats de vente ou de charter ou même pour livrer des pièces de rechange, » explique Elliott, tout en précisant que son hélicoptère a les mêmes fonctions mais que peu de yachts disposent d’un héliport. Avec ses flotteurs amphibies en fibre de verre résistant à l’eau de mer, l’hydravion six places est basé à St Barth l’hiver (l’une des îles où paradoxalement l’amerrissage dans le port est interdit.). « Je reste dans les Caraïbes de Décembre jusqu’à Mai. Je travaille la moitié de la semaine à St Martin avec les capitaines et les équipages et je passe de longs weekends à St Barth, où viennent séjourner les propriétaires de yachts, » aﬃrme-t-il. « Je pourrais aussi

bien les rencontrer en costard cravate à New York qu’au Niki Beach ou à La Plage autour d’un verre. L’atmosphère détendue des Caraïbes est tellement plus agréable ! » Depuis son adolescence, Eliott s’est révélé être un pilote motivé. « J’ai commencé à laver des avions à 12 ans, et à piloter à 13 », nous confie-t-il. « Le fait que l’hydravion soit basé à St Barth et que les bureaux se trouvent à St Martin représente un véritable avantage. Je peux me déplacer en un rien de temps et oﬀrir ainsi les meilleurs services à mes clients. Par ailleurs, plonger près de l’hydravion pour attraper des langoustes est aussi une expérience fantastique. Grâce a son nouvel équipage qui vient s’ajouter aux employés de St Martin, IYC est la seule entreprise à pouvoir fournir à plein temps un service de charter et de vente de yachts dans les Caraïbes. « Nous voulons être au même endroit que nos clients pour répondre à leurs besoins », déclare Elliott, qui apprécie ses clients et adore St Barth. « Une île unique au monde, des restaurants formidables, des boutiques de qualité et des plages comme on n’en trouve nulle part ailleurs. The principal entry to the Lagoon is via a drawbridge that opens regularly despite its position on a busy roadway. Recently, major work was undertaken to widen the bridge, allowing the largest of the mega-yachts access to the marinas. Clearance formalities take place at the police and immigration oﬃce located at the entry to the lagoon. Cet ouvrage routier qui se lève à heures régulières est le principal accès au lagon. The Simpson Bay Causeway is a new bridge connecting Juliana Airport and the east bank of the Simpson Bay Lagoon. With a span of 760 meters, it is the only swing bridge in the Caribbean, and supports two lanes of traﬃc and walkways on both sides. The two feeder roads are connected to the existing roads by roundabouts. Le Simspon Bay Causeway est un nouveau pont tournant qui relie l’aéroport de Juliana à la côte est du lagon de Simpson Bay.
