Dear Parents and Caregivers, The winter solstice on Tuesday saw the longest night, shortest day of the year and marked the middle of winter in the penultimate week of Term 2. For me there is almost a sense of optimism attached to this day as we look forward to longer warmer days ahead. It will be most evident when we return from three weeks of holiday as afternoon sports practices and activities will end with daylight still around. I congratulate all the Middle School students on completing their Half Yearly Examinations and remind them that the process was the important factor, not the marks. So feedback sessions are not just about getting their results, they are about analyzing how and why mistakes were made and learning from these.

 Careers Plus much more...

The Dance Department has had some fantastic results in the Dance Eisteddfod at the Extreme Dance Competition last weekend. Under Emily Knight's incredible guidance, dedication and creative choreography, our Middle School Dance Company maintained their reign as champions at this particular event taking out First Place in the Contemporary Yr 7- 9 School Section. This was no easy feat as competition was tough against a number of other well established schools and some quick rearranging to cope with losing one performer due to illness on the day was an added challenge. Emily has reported that the group pulled together as a team to produce an outstanding performance onstage. We are so proud of each and every student and so happy to see their hard work rewarded in this way. A special congratulations must be given to Emily for working tirelessly with this group of girls, encouraging and supporting the team through some very early mornings and providing them with a beautiful piece of choreography to perform.

The Senior School continue writing their examinations next week with the Year 12 students continuing for the first week of the holiday. We wish them all well and a Following this win we received news from the eisteddfod calm preparation period. committee that the group has been invited to perform in the Extreme Gala, which will take place this Sunday. It is an exclusive invite only event where additional awards will be given for categories such as Best Choreography and Most Entertaining Troupe. Fingers crossed our girls are rewarded for their performance but, at the very least, this opportunity to get onstage again is going to be such a wonderful experience for them and we are so proud. The following dancers were part of this sensational victory. Savanah Charles, Natasha Green, Sienna Peer, Bianca Peer, Noa-Rose Golan-Ende, Isabella Leibman, Alex Thatcher, Ella Kirby, Bonnie Douglas, Sofia Gerarchi, and Jamie Song.

This term Year 7 Drama students presented their rehearsed improvised scenes for their Term Assessment. All students engaged with improvisation techniques, learned to create characters, devise situations and problems for these characters to solve. Groups presented entertaining performances demonstrating their collaboration skills and showcasing their growing confidence on stage. Great work Year 7. The Year 11 Drama students presented their Term Assessment Performances this week, presenting scenes from their core text, 'Ruby Moon' by Matt Cameron. Students undertook a study of Contemporary Australian Theatre and learned about a variety of dramatic techniques in preparation for staging these performances. Our Drama students demonstrated their outstanding acting skills and sophisticated knowledge of the prevalent concerns of the play. Well done, Year 11 for directing such memorable moments of theatre. Images pages 8 and 9.

Jasper Hartmann had further good news this week in that his artwork that he entered into The Northern Beaches Environmental Art & Design Prize has been selected as a finalist from 640 entries across Australia.. The works offer fresh perspectives on our global climate crisis and issues of living sustainability. His entry is called “This Is Not a Toy” and is about the misuse of millions of hermit crabs as pets. They have to be caught from the wild as they don’t breed in captivity. Their life expectancy as a pet is about a month as opposed to 30 years in the wild.

Have a great weekend and final week of term next week. Dave Pitcairn

The Pride Portfolio ran an art competition during Term 2 and the judges’ decisions are in and I’m pleased to announce the winners: 1. Yana Daglish 2. Rowan Kremer / Forest Jones - tied for 2nd 3. Jasper Hartmann 4. Tasman Bates - Highly Commended Images pages 4 and 5.

Claudia Hasson, Year 7 Claudia plays for the Randwick U13 Netball Development Rep Team who went through undefeated to win the Campbeltown Championships last weekend. Congratulations !

PRIDE ART DISPLAY Yana Dalglish, Year 10 (watercolour painting) First Place A rainbow is described as a meteorological phenomenon that is caused by dispersion of light in water droplets resulting in a spectrum of light appearing in the sky. Like the rainbow deriving from a spectrum, I wanted to represent that love and acceptance can come naturally from many different forms of relationships and connections between any people. In doing so, I wanted to reflect the expanding nature of pride literally arching beyond relationships, to diverse cultures, races and ethnicities.

Rowan Kremer, Year 9 (oil painting on canvas, Passover Culture) Equal Second Place Pride shouldn’t just be in big things. Small things are important, too - like the cookies my “ee-mah” (mum) makes for Pesach (Passover). I’m proud of my culture in big ways, which is important, but our overarching history of survival and resistance doesn’t tend to show up day-to-day. Food does. Cookies do. Artistically, this was inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s use of impasto, vibrant colours, and swirls or light instead of stagnant flat surfaces.

Forest Jones, Year 9 (digital media artwork, Inner Embrace) Equal Second Place “Inner Embrace” is about my experience with mental health over the past three years. high school and covid was a shock to my health that i had never really considered or looked after. I knew you could be sad and be happy, but I felt neither of these things for a long time, and I didn’t understand why. mental health isn’t all black and white, neither are your emotions. the way you react and the way you feel are delicate processes that can easily be derailed if you don’t know how to support them. It took me a long while to understand that it was ok to not feel so wonderfully happy all the time, and that it was ok to cry over spilt milk. I refuse to feel shame for how far I’ve come, who I’ve been and who I am. For me, pride is a simple contentment with the way I am, and the knowledge that I should never need to change if not for myself. @REDDAM—The Reddam House High School Newsletter

Jasper Hartman, Year 8 (watercolour drawing) Third Place I chose to draw a lion as it represents pride, courage, bravery and being true to who you are just like the LGBTQIA+ community’s values.

Tasman Bates, Year 8 (watercolour) Highly Commended

The Pride Society hosted an Art Competition for "Pride Month" during June. The prompt for this competition was "What does Pride mean to you?", with students from Year 7-12 encouraged to enter artworks of any medium, alongside a short blurb to explain how their artwork matched the prompt. We hope everyone has a Happy Pride Month, and feels proud of who they are. We are free to be ourselves, and respect each other equally, as is the Reddam way!

Benefits of a UAC application Applications for 2023 entry opened on 12 April for NSW, ACT and IB students. Applications for interstate students will open on 1 August 2022. We're sometimes asked about the benefits of applying through UAC, so here are a few points: - You can apply for multiple institutions with just one application. - You can apply for SRS early offers. - If you've experienced educational disadvantage during Years 11 and or 12, you can have that disadvantage considered through EAS. - You can change your preferences as many times as you like. - You can be considered for the most competitive courses, which generally aren't available via direct applications. Semester 1, 2023 courses are being added to the UAC application progressively. All courses will be available for selection by 1 August. To start their application, students will need their Year 12 student number (eg NESA or BSSS student number) and UAC PIN: NSW HSC and ACT BSSS students: Their UAC PIN was emailed to them on 12 April. Educational Access Scheme A reminder that students must apply for EAS and upload all documents by 22 November 2022 to ensure their application is considered in the first ATAR-based offer round on 22 December. If a student has applied for EAS and received an email from UAC about supplying documents, this is just a reminder. They can upload their supporting documents progressively, as they become available, but they must have them all uploaded by the 22 November deadline. Students will be notified of their EAS eligibility on 15 December and will then have until midnight on 16 December to finalise their course preferences. Schools Recommendation Scheme Over the past few months, we have had many students from Years 10 and 11 asking about early offers. Please advise all your students that they can only apply for SRS when they are in Year 12. We have also had many enquiries from students who are unable to lodge an SRS application. It is usually because the student hasn't submitted their UAC application yet. Students must submit a UAC application before they can submit an SRS application. Students must decide on the order of their course preferences by 3 November. The first SRS offers will then be released on 11 November.

Paperbark, by Rowan Kremer Year 9 I am not the first to sit here, peeling the thin layers of paperbark from each other, scratching the soft glue dust until the fibre dances in the air and settles pale in my hair. A far cry from the ankle joints of trees that cluster in cold circles of chip bark, the paperbark tree outside my window bends sun-struck from the ground, weeds springing cheerfully through the roots. I unstick the transparent layers that give the paperbark its name and wonder if this is humanity at its core: A space oddity; a tiny drifting rock crawling with curious giants. The world has, in being known, lost its intrigue. There is no movement to stir. No discoveries to spear with a flag, no stone unturned. But the dust in the paperbark is a land of its own, And I, dutifully human, must map it how I can.
