This Issue: Luke Reilly from PNKSLM Recordings
Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?
I wouldn’t say we focus on any genre as such, but we like to think everyone we work with has that sort of special “edge” or whatever. We turn down a lot of bands that are probably a much safer bet financially, but if they don’t get us excited, then there’s no fun in it. I’d class everything we do as “Rock & Roll” in some form, but that branches out into weirdo pop, psychedelic rap, garage punk, acoustic ballads, whatever really, so long as it has some heart.
How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?
How did you personally get started in the music industry?
My mum has always been a musician, so my childhood summers were basically being dragged to folk festivals with her, so I guess I didn’t have much choice. But the first big “business” move was when I was 16, me and my best friend started promoting shows in our hometown (Leicester), purely so we could get into shows before we turned 18. We ended up putting on early shows for the likes of Arctic Monkeys and The Cribs… Funnily enough doing that was what got me accepted into University, after my grades sucked. Did a 3 year degree in “Music Management & Studio Production”, which set me up for this life of fortune and success.
When and where did the label begin?
The year was 2013. I accidentally ended up moving from London to Stockholm, and was working as an A&R assistant at a Universal imprint. We got a demo from this band Sudakistan, who clearly weren’t a good fit for a major label, but I loved it. I’d been thinking about starting a little side project label, just a few 7”s here and there, so figured they would be a good first band for that. That went great, sold out entirely in a couple of days, Pitchfork was all over it… I thought “damn this is easy.” So then I did a few more, then a few albums... and then it just sort of took over my life. Johan came in as co-owner to sort out all my fucking mess in 2016, which was when it started to look more like an actual business and not some sort of international tax scam. Around that time we thankfully managed to trick Redeye into distributing us. Then in 2021 we hired Axel, who came in to sort both of our fucking messes, as a sort of label manager. Someone we pay to shout at us and remind us of what we’re forgetting to do on a daily basis.
What is the meaning behind the name for the label?
As the label was just supposed to be a side project, I didn’t really think enough about it. I couldn’t really think of a label name, so I just took the name of my club-night I was running in London (Punk Slime), thinking it wouldn’t matter much. By the time I realized that it was a pretty shite name it was too late. The whole “PNKSLM” thing really confuses radio DJs as well, we’ve been called all kinds of things, Pink Slim, Punk Slam etc. It’s got to the point though now where even if we could change it, I’d be too stubborn to.
How has the label changed since it started?
We spend a shitload more money, get a lot more stressed out, and Pitchfork now don’t give a fuck about us. But we’re a million times more organized than we used to be. And we now finally understand the need for solid lead times.
Describe the general makeup of your team at the label.
At the core it’s just me, Johan and Axel, so we kind of all do a million different things. But we definitely have certain specific skill sets that work together well - Johan’s great with the business/numbers side of things, Axel is great at keeping stuff organized, and I’m really great at shouting at people on the phone.
What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic?
We’ve always naturally leaned towards working with brand new artists, and I guess sort of one of our specialties was introducing them into the world to some degree. But we learned very fast and hard that without any live shows being possible, that task became practically impossible.
Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases?
We’ve got artists all over the world now. We obviously end up working with a lot of Swedish artists, often things work better the tighter the relationship can be between us and the artist, which of course is easier if they are at least in the same time zone. But with my English background, we’ve got a fair amount of UK based artists as well. Quite a few from Birmingham UK actually - that’s where I used to hang out and play shows myself as a teenager. Those bands I used to play with, we now release on the label which is pretty awesome. Black Mekon in particular have a lot to blame for my life choices over the years, so it’s cool to work with them and still be releasing their records all this time later.
To be honest I think the ambitions are still pretty much the same as they always were. Basically to each artist as “big” as that artist can get. It’s probably a sign of some degree of narcissism, but I’ve always been terrible at accepting that something is out of reach from us. Like why can’t we get our bands on that big festival, or that TV show, in that magazine, or that tour, whatever it is. Of course it doesn’t always work out, but we’ve definitely always been punching way above our weight when it comes to what we achieve, especially for such a small company on such small budgets. If we take a band on as a label, we’ve got that responsibility to push them to the maximum of our ability. What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?
Maybe not the wildest idea, but one that sort of backfired a bit. So when ShitKid retired from music in 2020, she left us with several releases to still put out. She literally left town, had her name changed, and became a nurse. Totally disappeared. So when we released her final album, she was already long gone, but we needed something to help market the release, so I thought it was a good idea to make a load of “Missing” posters with her face on and get them plastered around Stockholm. It turned out a lot of her friends genuinely didn’t know what she was up to, or where she had gone, so we started getting a lot of very worried phone calls. I guess people were talking about it at least!
If you had the budget, what would be your dream “outside-the-box” or “crossover” marketing campaign?
I strongly believe we need to make some bribes, to get me into the writing room for the final episode of HBO’s hit show Succession. Episode synopsis as follows:
The Roy siblings are stunned when Waystar Royco’s imminent takeover is suddenly thrown into chaos, as a surprise last minute high bidder is dramatically revealed - eccentric music industry mogul, Tor Hansen (Redeye co-founder). In a futile effort to ease tension between the two companies at this pivotal point, Kendall Roy is flown out to Stockholm to meet the hip young company PNKSLM Recordings, to get a grasp on the sort of people they will now be forced to work with. Kendall’s emotions start to rock as he boards the plane, specifically as he’s taking the same flight route his father recently had. Relationships fail almost instantly after Kendall meets PNKSLM founder Luke Reilly (played by Keanu Reeves), as the two industry giants clash personalities on every level. They both go to top local restaurant “The Crazy Horse” for dinner with the previously expected buyer of Waystar Royco, the Swedish tech entrepreneur Lucas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård). Whilst Kendall visits the bathroom, Reilly and Matsson make plans to kill him, following poorly received comments he made about Brexit “being kinda cool, if you think about it”. Reilly & Matsson lace his meatballs with rat poison taken from the restaurant floor. Kendall returns, and starts to eat the meatballs. The song “Done With The Day” by PNKSLM artist 7ebra starts playing. In one final twist, whilst consuming his final köttbular - Kendall opens up to Reilly & Matsson - and apologizes for all his wrongdoings, and admits it was a poor decision “based on my own insecurities and my fundamental need to be accepted” to wear the 50,000 dollar leather jacket to a meeting with a record label. Reilly & Matsson look regretfully at each other, but know it’s too late. The episode and series wrap up with a shot of Tor Hansen reclining in his chair with a cigar, in the new Waystar Redeyeco office. The song “No Regrets” by PNKSLM artist She/Beast begins playing. Cut to Roman and Shiv slowly packing their boxes at the office, tears in their eyes - finally realizing, albeit too late, that despite all their differences - Kendall truly was their one last chance to keep the family legacy alive.
How would you describe the average fan of the label?
A person of an immaculate, distinguished taste.
What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?
Definitely streaming. But not because of sales. I’m unfortunately not old enough to know what it was like to sell a million CD’s at 99% profit margins. But more the music discovery side of things. When I started doing this, it was relatively easy to create a genuine buzz/hype around new bands by getting coverage on music blogs, and the bigger music sites. But as playlists started taking over as the way people discover new music online, all those sites have died off. Which I think is a big shame to be honest. If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards?
I still really want to do “Pop Slime” and just release really tacky but happy 90’s style pop music. But Johan won’t let me. One day…
They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered?
The label that ruined the finale of HBO’s hit show, Succession.

Written from 2020 to 2022 in between London and Liverpool, SpaceHeavy took shape over the course of Archy’s commutes between the two cities where he was splitting his time. Befitting an album quite literally written on the commute between the two places he called home, Archy found himself fascinated by the notion of “the space between” – the space haunted by dreams of love, touching a narrative of lost connection, losing people and situations to the guillotine of the universe. SpaceHeavy, indeed.
The result is an album that inhabits the deepest reaches of the subterranean sonic world that Archy has constructed over the course of his career as King Krule. In it you hear a generational artist stepping into the height of their artistic powers – the auteurism apparent on his debut 6 Feet BeneathThe Moon, the shapeshifting sonic palette of The OOZ and the primality of Man Alive! all coalesce into a wizened, dynamic body of work that reveals new elements with each listen. In line with Archy’s interest in the space between, it is an album wherein the negative space demands the same attention as the positive space. If one is willing to wade into the mire the reward is rich.

DESCRIPTION / BIO:
Jess Williamson’s Time Ain’t Accidental is the sound of a woman running into her life and art head-on, on her own terms for the first time in a long while. With vocal power kindred to Linda Rondstadt and Emmylou Harris, Williamson blends the emotional immediacy and story-telling of traditional country with the artful, wholly honest transmissions of songwriters like Townes Van Zandt and Terry Allen. The album’s reckoning with loss, isolation, romance, and personal reclamation signals both a stylistic and tectonic shift for Williamson: from someone who once made herself small to an artist emboldened by her power as an individual.
Last year, Williamson and Katie Crutchfield of Waxahatchee released I Walked With You A Ways under the name Plains; a critically acclaimed record filled to the whiskey-barreled brim with feminine confidence, camaraderie, and straight-up country bangers and ballads. After past records Cosmic Wink (2018) and Sorceress (2020), both released on Mexican Summer, Williamson felt primed to shift in a new direction. Revisiting what she loved growing up, simplifying her process, and making music with a friend proved to be the best step forward for Williamson.
Williamson now splits her time between Marfa, Texas and Los Angeles. Time Ain’t Accidental, with its synthesis of traditional country instrumentation with digital effects and modern sounds, unequivocally embodies the energy of the two very different places that she calls home. The album’s artwork, subtly menacing and neon in awareness and strength, displays, in Williamson’s words, “that supernatural forces are acting all around us, that we can trust that we will be in the right place at the right time.”

The return of Dream Wife is a moment worth savouring, with the band in electrifying form with an entirely self-written and self-produced third album. The only outside influence being the heavyweight mixing duo of Alan Moulder (Nine Inch Nails, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Killers, Depeche Mode) and Caesar Edmunds (Wet Leg, Beach House). The incendiary and riotous record finds the trio once again tackling big subjects in their trademark unapologetic manner where, with the band being adept at merging the political with the playful, vital statements are hidden within hot and heavy anthems about making out, having fun and staying curious. Social Lubrication, in the bands words, is “Hyper lusty rock and roll with a political punch, exploring the alchemy of attraction, the lust for life, embracing community and calling out the patriarchy. With a heathy dose of playfulness and fun thrown in.”
“New wave structure meets punk blatancy and 21st-century gender fluency” - NEW YORK TIMES
“[Dream Wife] combine sticky pop flourishes and bruising sounds with brazen self-assurance....extending the continuum of uncompromising feminist musical statements with refreshing directness.” - NPR Music
“The outspoken Brighton punks are back to finish what they started, smashing the patriarchy with hooks and excoriating, witty lyrical missives.” - NME
“Dream Wife just want to dismantle the patriarchy. The U.K. art punks make music that’s roiling with feminist rage and Spice Girls attitude” - Rolling Stone

Death Cab for Cutie went back into the studio in December 2022 with the goal of reinterpreting their latest record Asphalt Meadows with the most minimal arrangements possible and presenting the songs in their rawest, most intimate forms. The result is Asphalt Meadows (Acoustic) available on black, standard weight vinyl via Barsuk Records.
“At first, there was an idea of doing an acoustic version of ‘Pepper,’ which was going to be the next single from Asphalt Meadows,” Death Cab bassist Nick Harmer told SPIN last month. “But then we thought, well, if we’re in there, we might as well see if we can do some other versions. We really love Asphalt Meadows , and we were really happy with the songwriting that’s at the core of every track. For us, we were wondering how all of those songs would sound presented slightly differently. Then we said, maybe we’ll just do an EP. As we got into the process, one thing led to the next, and before we knew it, we had re-recorded every song.”
Asphalt Meadows (Acoustic) also includes the non-album bonus “The Plan” by Low, included as tribute to the late amazingly talented Mimi Parker.
Death Cab for Cutie will be everywhere in 2023. Still touring in support of Asphalt Meadows, their critically acclaimed 10th studio album, the band has already announced and largely sold out a double-bill Postal Service Give Up / Death Cab for Cutie Transatlanticism tour this fall celebrating the 20th anniversary of these iconic and generation-defining albums.

YELLOW OSTRICH THE MISTRESS
bark120LPE / LP + bonus download tracks
STREET DATE: JUNE 9, 2023
Barsuk is excited to present a new pressing of Yellow Ostrich’s The Mistress, available now on standard black vinyl. Each copy is prominently stickered touting its download code containing the original 10-track album and 18 bonus tracks, including the 2011 Barsuk bonus material, four previously unreleased b-sides, an early alternate version of the hit “WHALE”, plus 10 covers (recorded in 2010) of songs that inspired founder Alex Schaaf during the writing and recording of The Mistress: songs by Beach House, Jon Brion, Dirty Projectors, The National, Joanna Newsom, The Replacements, The Rural Alberta Advantage, The Tallest Man on Earth, Sharon Van Etten, and Yeasayer
Since songwriter and band-leader Alex Schaaf first uploaded The Mistress (at age 22) to Bandcamp as a free download at the beginning of the last decade, it has captivated listeners: the team at Barsuk (who reissued it within a few months of Schaaf’s initial self-release); fans who fell under the hypnotic spell of standout track “WHALE”; and a host of fellow musicians (notably including Moses Sumney, who included it on his short list of favorite albums of the 2010s, not to mention future Yellow Ostrich members Michael Tapper [Bishop Allen] and the great indie sideman and composer Jon Natchez [Beirut/The War on Drugs/David Byrne/St. Vincent/etc]).
The 10th anniversary reissue of The Mistress at the start of the pandemic heralded something of a rebirth of the Yellow Ostrich moniker as the band went on to release a slew of new music over the past few years including their latest album Soft in 2021; Like a Bird: An Alex Schaaf Anthology (2010-2021), a compilation spanning the career (so far) of the quietly brilliant songwriter/producer Schaaf; and Make It Make Sense EP, released earlier this spring.
CRITICAL ACCLAIM FOR YELLOW OSTRICH
New and fresh and totally original… Amazing. – NPR
Yellow Ostrich is equal parts Vampire Weekend's sharp-angled pop and Andrew Bird's whimsical multitasking. – Time Out New York
Kaleidoscopic vocal loops, sparse drums, and electronics into a bubblegum whole with a nuanced, dark edge. – Village Voice
Schaaf's songs have grown impressively dexterous, nimbly hopping from aching verse to pleading chorus. – Pitchfork
Music that has never stopped being fearless and full of risks. – Line of Best Fit
They don't make 'em like this anymore. – Austin Chronicle

HOT TRIP TO
HEAVEN
SWEET F.A.
▶ Beggars Arkive has launched an extensive Love And Rockets reissue program which sees all of their Beggars Banquet albums pressed on vinyl after years of being out of print.
▶The titles have all been remastered by Sean McGee at Abbey Road Studios.
▶Full press and marketing campaigns will be in action with artist participation
▶The band will play their first live show over 15 years this May at Cruel World Festival in LA.
Love And Rockets is the seminal, groundbreaking trio of Daniel Ash (vocals and guitar), David J (vocals and bass) and Kevin Haskins (drums). Formed in 1985 after the first split of their band Bauhaus, Love and Rockets provided a clean slate and an opportunity to plumb the depths of imagination and influences.
HOT TRIP TO HEAVEN
Love and Rockets fifth album Hot Trip To Heaven is strikingly different from anything previous. The album has a diverse range of influences, from twisted lounge jazz to ambient trance. With additional vocals by the celebrated Egyptian-Belgian singer Natacha Atlas, the album’s world music influences are evident. A critical piece of their catalog, many have noted that the album is brave and radical. New York Magazine said it was “hypnotic, glistening, dark and crashing.” The album was ahead of it’s time, pre-dating the electronic music revolution by a few years.

Rick Rubin guided Love and Rockets to a return to more guitarbased songs for 1996’s Sweet F.A. While the band were living and working at Rubin’s studio mansion, a fire broke out, which resulted in the band losing all of their gear, some of their demo recordings, and nearly their lives as well. A burnt guitar plucked from the debris is on the album’s cover. The resulting album was inspired by some of their earliest influences – The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, Can. It spins tales of passion and loss, carried on a fluid, moody throb. Undulating, hypnotic rhythms twine around melancholy lyrics which examine life at a primal level, as ethereal electronic effects play counterpoint to earthquake reverberating guitars.

MYDARKTWIN LOVE AND ROCKETS
A NEW COLLECTION OF ABANDONED TRACKS AND OUTTAKES FROM THE SWEET F.A. SESSIONS
▶ MY DARK TWIN is a 22 track double CD/Digital release containing 8 previously unreleased versions + 6 unreleased songs from the Sweet F.A. sessions.
▶ Also released on June 9th (see separate page) are expanded vinyl editions of Hot Trip To Heaven and Sweet F.A.
▶ These titles are part of an extensive Love And Rockets campaign which sees all of their Beggars Banquet albums pressed on vinyl after years of being out of print.
▶ The band will play their first live shows in over 15 years starting this May at Cruel World Festival in LA.
MY DARK TWIN is a companion to the band’s 1996 album Sweet F.A. The 22 track double CD/Digital release contains 8 previously unreleased versions, and 6 unreleased songs from the Sweet F.A. sessions, and 18 of the 22 tracks are on CD for the very first time.
The band began recording the follow-up to Hot Trip To Heaven at San Francisco’s Coast Recorders with Andy Taub at the helm. These initial sessions proved fruitful and produced many quality recordings. Despite the great tracks, it was determined by all that the essential spark just wasn’t there. Rick Rubin suggested a new studio and a new producer. Producer John Fryer came on board and took Andy Taub’s recordings to Chipping Norton studios and deconstructed them, adding an “English” edge to the Coast recordings. The band also recorded some additional, but ultimately unused tracks at Chipping Norton including an improvisation of Mink DeVille’s “Spanish Stroll”. The band brought these tracks back to California and due to lack of funds, were offered full use of Rick Rubin’s possibly haunted 1919 Laurel Canyon mansion to stay and rehearse in and ideally come up with more material that American Recordings felt was needed in order to complete the record.
What was recorded at Rubin’s place was done so onto Kevin Haskins’ portable DAT machine, and thankfully he took them home with him every night, as a massive fire broke out while they were there. They lost all of their gear, some of their demo recordings, and nearly their lives as well.
▶ “U. O. ME.” is a spontaneous, improvised jam between Love and Rockets and Genesis P. Orridge. Though it’s raw, rough and unrehearsed, and not a studio-quality recording, the compilers felt compelled it was important to include.
▶ “California (Have A Nice Apocalypse!)” has a few guest musicians that apparently just happened to be hanging around, including Chuck Prophet on guitar, Bruce Kaphan (American Music Club) on pedal steel and Steve Carter on piano. It was recorded in a single take at the end of a very long and productive day.
▶ “Spanish Stroll” is a spontaneous, loose cover version of the 1977 Mink DeVille classic, taped on an old boombox.

THE BETHS JUMP ROPE GAZERS
Everything changed for The Beths when they released their debut album, Future Me Hates Me, in 2018. The indie rock band had long been nurtured within Auckland, New Zealand’s tight-knit music scene, working full-time during the day and playing music with friends after hours. Full of uptempo pop rock songs with bright, indelible hooks, the LP garnered them critical acclaim from outlets like Pitchfork and Rolling Stone, and they set out for their first string of shows overseas. They quit their jobs, said goodbye to their hometown, and devoted themselves entirely to performing across North America and Europe. They found themselves playing to crowds of devoted fans and opening for acts like Pixies and Death Cab for Cutie. Almost instantly, The Beths turned from a passion project into a full-time career in music.
Songwriter and lead vocalist Elizabeth Stokes worked on what would become The Beths’ second LP, Jump Rope Gazers, in between these intense periods of touring. Like the group’s earlier music, the album tackles themes of anxiety and self-doubt with effervescent power pop choruses and rousing backup vocals, zeroing in on the communality and catharsis that can come from sharing stressful situations with some of your best friends. Stokes’s writing on Jump Rope Gazers grapples with the uneasy proposition of leaving everything and everyone you know behind on another continent, chasing your dreams while struggling to stay close with loved ones back home.
“If you’re at a certain age, all your friends scatter to the four winds,” Stokes says. “We did the same thing. When you’re home, you miss everybody, and when you’re away, you miss everybody. We were just missing people all the time.”
With songs like the rambunctious “Dying To Believe” and the tender, shoegazey “Out of Sight,” The Beths reckon with the distance that life necessarily drives between people over time. People who love each other inevitably fail each other. “I’m sorry for the way that I can’t hold conversations/They’re such a fragile thing to try to support the weight of,” Stokes sings on “Dying to Believe.” The best way to repair that failure, in The Beths’ view, is with abundant and unconditional love, no matter how far it has to travel. On “Out of Sight,” she pledges devotion to a dearly missed friend: “If your world collapses/I’ll be down in the rubble/I’d build you another,” she sings.
“It was a rough year in general, and I found myself saying the words, ‘wish you were here, wish I was there,’ over and over again,” she says of the time period in which the album was written. Touring far from home, The Beths committed themselves to taking care of each other as they were trying at the same time to take care of friends living thousands of miles away. They encouraged each other to communicate whenever things got hard, and to pay forward acts of kindness whenever they could. That care and attention shines through on Jump Rope Gazers, where the quartet sounds more locked in than ever. Their most emotive and heartfelt work to date, Jump Rope Gazers stares down all the hard parts of living in communion with other people, even at a distance, while celebrating the ferocious joy that makes it all worth it — a sentiment we need now more than ever.

JIMMY WHISPERS THE SEARCH FOR GOD
The Search for God is a wake-up call for a troubled world that’s still worth saving, animated by a belief in the power of small connections to add up to big changes. At 10 songs delivered in a brief 15 minutes, Jimmy Whispers’ long-awaited sophomore album feels present in a way that feels brand new for the cult auteur. Like many of us, Jimmy has been affected by the pressure of the past few years. After embracing sobriety, and now as a filmmaker sharing the stories of lesser known Los Angeles community members, he’s brought his dreaming down to earth, while turning its direction even further out.
Recorded with his longtime friend Ziyad Asrar of the band Whitney (and re-recorded after a hard drive incident destroyed the original files), The Search for God was created in the wake of Jimmy’s COVID isolation, and returns to some teen influences that are out of step with the chill/lo-fi LA indie rock scene he’s found himself lumped in with. Created mostly with two vintage synths, a single Roland CR5000 drum machine, and a busted karaoke machine, it channels Midwestern emo, the Beach Boys’ Smile, subtle nods at hyper-pop production, and forgotten jewel-box era college radio of the early aughts into a pure pop sound that transcends easy categorization.
The album’s standout single—and its statement of purpose—is “Hellscape,” which packs more into a minute and 40 seconds than you’d think possible: multiple immediately-unforgettable hooks, kaleidoscopic keyboards, and a bracing reminder that even the most transcendent moments are rooted in a world full of suffering. “This is a fucking hellscape,” Jimmy sings. “This is real life / this is happening.”
That may sound like punk nihilism, but The Search for God is anything but. Every lyrical acknowledgment of how fucked things are right now comes with a promise that we can still make positive changes. Jimmy calls it “God”; you might call it Love or Peace or A Place In the Universe That Makes Some Kind of Sense.
Will The Search for God deliver whatever that is to you? Of course not. At its heart, it’s still just a really good pop album. But maybe that’s enough. For a minute or two at a time, Jimmy’s music cracks open a space where the divine can enter our lives. The utopia we’ve all been dreaming of is already here if we’re just willing to build it. Jimmy Whispers is there, ready to add his voice, whenever we want to reach out.

TEKE::TEKE HAGATA
STREET DATE: JUNE 9, 2023
From the tender-hearted “Jinzou Maria” to the rumbling and raucous “Yurei Zanmai”, the songs of Hagata bear an eerie yet somehow familiar sensation. Japanese pop tones, Serge Gainsbourg grandeur, folk whisper, and Brazilian surf rock all mix into the psychedelic stew. Blending past and present, from Canada to Japan, multiple lives lived at once, each track carries a sense of change, impact, of having been marked in an intimate way. And yet the force behind that marking is always just out of grasp, a wisp, a ghost, an energy, a spirit that compels you to keep reaching. And at the end of the day, the concrete answer of how that bite happened is far less thrilling than the bite itself. On Hagata, TEKE::TEKE move beyond the idea of walking across multiple paths, instead existing so fully in the space between that the usual constraints of creativity no longer apply.
Psychedelic rock group TEKE::TEKE are intimately familiar with duality, of splitting reality between past and present, complex melodies and hushed interludes, intense action and lingering response. After building their sound through careful assembly of countless splinters of Japanese folk, psychedelia, Brazilian surf rock, and other far-flung touchstones, the Montreal-based seven-piece indulged in and learned from stretching out in free-floating experimentation on the road. Now releasing their sophomore album, Hagata (due June 9th via Kill Rock Stars), TEKE::TEKE move fully in the space between, embracing the power of mythic pairings and identities lived at once. Matching muscly intensity with moments of cloudy meditation—like a world-class high jumper finding bliss at the apex of their leap—the group frame expressive compositions with regal flute, rich horns, ecstatic guitar, and a thumping rhythm section.

Singer-songwriter and composer, Kate Stables returns with a wondrous new This Is The Kit album, Careful of Your Keepers, that chronicles a world of mistakes and mishaps, cruel circumstances, and universe-driven surprises. It’s a record that embraces the concept of outrospection – the idea that you get to know oneself by developing relationships and empathic thinking with others –and brings the Paris-based, UK born bandleader’s signature ability to move swiftly between cryptic poetry to honest inquisition to the fore.
Guiding the ship through changing seas is producer Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals), who deftly enhances the innate shared language that Stables has with her band, capturing beautiful instrumental performances while leaving the space required for her robust, silken voice to lead. The music here is daring and soft, cutting and warm, a wild feat of complexity and combined dispositions. Surviving change is a constant throughout this record and This is the Kit takes us to the front lines in “More Change,” where we celebrate the losing battle of fighting change with barbed dancing lyrics that whisk us from the mundane to the massive as a steady beat and delicate guitars wind in and out, down and around Stables words: “light bulb / life changing / found a friend…claw sanity back again.” The sonic brilliance always comes back to bite and the cascading melodies of “Stuck In A Room” plant the listener in the most familiar of recent quandaries, wanting to leave but being unable to. There are so many versions of “leaving” one might be attracted to in this disappointing modern age, and Stables works through them all. Conflict hits hard and with surprise but have the right people around you and you can escape by the skin of your teeth.

Girl with Fish
JUNE 9TH, 2023
“Pittsburgh quartet feeble little horse know exactly how much noise belongs in their noise-pop, a balance they strike with ease on the shaggily infectious”
- The New Yorker
Indie Exclusive LP pressed on grey galaxy vinyl. Limited to 500 copies. LP includes digital download
feeble little horse makes thrilling and wildly unpredictable songs that are a re ection of the joys that come with making music with your best friends. The Pittsburgh quartet’s sophomore album, Girl with Fish, which is out June 9, was made focusing on intuition over intention: letting the magic of collaboration come rst. “Anything that makes us laugh or puts a smile on our faces, we usually end up keeping in the songs,” explains drummer Jake Kelley. Across 11 self-recorded and self-produced tracks, the band careens from blissed-out pop to harsh noise, glitchy programmed drum beats, and o -kilter indie rock—sometimes all in one song. As a follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2021 debut Hayday, this LP, with its overwhelmingly inviting and emotionally resonant tracklist, is a document of four people trusting their instincts and most importantly each other.
For the members of feeble little horse, Hayday was originally going to be their rst and last album. Guitarist Ryan Walchonski was moving to Washington D.C. for work while the rest of the band, including Kelley, guitarist-producer Sebastian Kinsler, and singer-bassist Lydia Slocum were all still in college. “When we made Hayday, we wrote really quickly to get it done before he moved away and we couldn’t make songs anymore,” says Kinsler. “But we realized making music with each other was too fun to walk away from. For this album, we got to take our time with every decision that went into it.” Despite the distance with Walchonski out-of-state and Slocum attending school a few hours away in central Pennsylvania, the band immediately started work on a new batch of songs, trading voice memos, new mixes, and song ideas remotely.
Like the album name, which came from an inside joke the band shared about imagined painting titles at a museum, there’s a sense of humor that’s welcoming and light. The bruising opener “Freak,” for all its pummeling drums and guitar blasts, is a breezy track about an unrequited crush on a college star athlete (Slocum sings, “how can you be satis ed / she's 5'1 and you're 6'5”). “I think we just felt more con dent on this album,” says Slocum. “We could have felt more pressure and more unsure of ourselves. But we just wanted to try new things, and learn from what people liked about Hayday but not make the same song again.” Girl with Fish is a testament to the power of self-recording, doing it yourself, and taking a leap with the people you are closest with. “Besides our friendship getting stronger and our songs becoming more interesting to us, nothing’s really changed,” says Kinsler. “It's still us just hanging out: This is what we do instead of playing video games.”

LONG AWAITED REISSUE OF THE
I LOVE YOU’,
UNRELEASED RECORDINGS FROM THE SAME SESSION
Soundway reissues the vocal and instrumental versions of ‘If I Love You’, from G.C. Cameron, the lead singer of the legendary soul group The Spinners. The release also includes two unreleased recordings from the same session - ‘Live for Love’ and ‘Thank You Baby’.
Hailing from Mall Creek, Mississippi, G.C. Cameron rose to fame at 22 years of age, when he joined Motown Records to become lead singer of The Spinners. After a string of well received releases, including chartbuster ‘It’s A Shame’, cowritten and produced by Stevie Wonder, Cameron left The Spinners to pursue a solo career.
It was a trip to Fantasy Studios, San Francisco in 1977, where Cameron teamed up with Harvey Faqua, Greg Crockett and Elgie Stover to realise what is arguably his finest work. A full album was recorded, but only two tracks saw the light of day, via the short-lived UK label, Flamingo.
Soundway’s Live for Love release comprises the two indemand cuts previously released on Flamingo - the deep and dubby disco-workout ‘If I Love You (Instrumental)’ and soul drenched ballad ‘Live For Love’, coupled with two unreleased recordings rescued from the abyss after 45 years of collecting dust. The modern-soul-dancer ‘Thank You Baby’, backed by Jeanie Tracy and Martha Walsh, is a jewel that displays Cameron’s full range whilst the vocal to ‘If I Love You’ elevates the recording to dance-floor-ready.

After a huge year of traveling in 2022, playing DJ sets in more than 30 cities across 10 countries, Captain Planet dove back into the studio to create his 5th and most ambitious album to date- Sounds Like Home. Taking a turn toward the more organic, retro sounds of artists who originally inspired him as a young musician, Charlie Wilder (aka Captain Planet) flexed his composer and bandleader muscles- incorporating horn sections, strings and acoustic drums more than the big club focused electronic sounds he has often come to be known for. “The basic concept was to make a record like the ones I constantly pull off my shelves at home and play on the weekends. The records that turn into living room dance parties with my family, the soundtracks while I'm cooking, the music that fills the backyard for lazy hang outs.” An avid vinyl record collector and musicologist since his teens, the Captain has a near encyclopedic knowledge of music from around the world, particularly artists from the 60’s and 70's, which is the era that inspired much of the sonic texture on this new album.
In classic Captain Planet style, a kaleidoscopic array of genres from around the world find their way into the mix- Brazilian disco, Latin funk, Jamaican dub, Middle Eastern psychedelia, and American soul music. While this diversity may sound more like a mixtape, the Captain's trademark uplifting vibe and impeccable knack for building a great groove, provide the special ingredients that pull it all together and make the sauce work. The Fader wrote “the Captain is a walking 'recommended vinyl' section from the best record store you've ever been to”, because all his deep love and appreciation for classic music comes right through him in his original songs. Throughout this album you'll hear echoes of timeless artists like Cymande, Gilberto Gil, Ray Barretto, Curtis Mayfield, Mulatu Astatke, and Gabor Szabo, all funneled through the Captain's modern musical sensibility, shaped by nearly 2 decades of being a professional world-traveling DJ.
PANTAYO ANG PAGDALOY
RELEASE DATE: JUNE 9, 20023
The spellbinding Toronto-based outfit Pantayo (Eirene Cloma, Michelle Cruz, Joanna Delos Reyes, Kat Estacio, and Katrina Estacio) find a satisfying resolution by reinventing their relationship to the traditional kulintang ensemble instruments, indigenous to the islands known as Mindanao, that provide the foundation for their unmistakable and unyielding sound.
On their sophomore record Ang Pagdaloy, the Polaris-shortlisted group give themselves permission to dive into an appreciation for the music they discovered growing up —searing, minimal R&B; heaving drone metal; airy 90s guitar-driven rock, and gauzy, alt-country balladry. In the process, they build into their sonic landscape a constellation of somatic and aural influences, like the low-belly simmer of an unresolved crush or the metallic cacophony of the carts from early morning bottle collectors in Manilla.
At its core, Ang Pagdaloy is an intricately constructed collage that rejects narrow definitions, and instead, mirrors the properties of water — taking inspiration from its shape-shifting elements, devotion to organic paths of least resistance, and desire to to let go and flow.

LCY
Title: He Hymns
Release date: 2023/06/02
Over the last few years, Bristol born, London based artist LCY has become one of the guiding lights in a scene of fans who like their club music deep, dark and with a heavy dose of rhythm. Releasing predominantly on their own label SZNS7N, LCY has transcended musical boundaries, taking from a wide range of musical influences to create their own fluid hybrid style that indulges the deepest desires of those who chase a visceral dancefloor response - uplifting a huge amount of unconventional producers alongside them in the process. Today marks the announcement of their first release on fabric Originals, the flagship label from global club imprint fabric
LCY’s He Hymns EP is a dystopian reimagination of club music. Each track within the project takes inspiration from elements of beloved genres of club music and metamorphoses them into works of dancefloor experiments that alter the perception of what music built for soundsystems can be.
Simultaneously warm and unrelentingly intense, He Hymns perfectly sets the stall for LCY’s vision for the club; transporting the listener to an alternate future in which the driving heart of electronic music sits unapologetically at the fore. He Hymns is dynamic, confounding club music that is still inherently propulsiveready to lift the curtain on a new level of invention within the electronic space.

• Black vinyl cut by award winning engineer Matt Colton
• The fifth release in the new series ‘fabric Originals’ from fabric Records

From the teenage 4-track tapes she made as Greenpot Bluepot to the recent albums under her own name, Natalie Rose LeBrecht’s recordings have been fascinating dispatches from her progressively deeper dives into her gorgeous, weird, wildly idiomatic aesthetic. Holy Prana Open Game is a jewel of intensely personal cosmic music, created through a remarkable process of openness, craftiness, addition and subtraction. It belongs to a tradition of albums that document a rich, meditative sound as it rises up to join the world outside its creators’ minds: Alice Coltrane’s Universal Consciousness, Harmonia’s Musik von Harmonia, Philip Glass’s North Star, Talk Talk’s Laughing Stock.

OVERVIEW:
Howlin’ Sun is finally back with their highly anticipated 2nd album. The sound is familiar for fans of the first album, but this time it is crisper, darker and bigger. The dark and heavy title track «Maxime» - a homage to a legendary former venue in Bergen, sets the stage for the album. The album is a broad exploration of the rock genre going from southern country rock to gritty garage, complimented by the indie intermission «Jayne» and the americana album closer «Bittersweet Morning Sun».
The album was recorded live to tape in an old sardine packaging plant by the sea side in Bergen, by Robert Jønnnum from Underschön studio. The sound of the room, the feel of the band playing together in real time, and the vintage compressors, audio console and reel-to-reel tape machine gives «Maxime» an organic and warm presence.
For fans of classic rock, modern fuzz, blues, southern rock and garage rock.

Terri Lyne Carrington
TLC & Friends
The 4-time Grammy- winner and one-time child prodigy’s long-lost, 1981 debut
Backed by jazz legends Kenny Barron, George Coleman, and Buster Williams
As an artist, an educator, A&R executive, and activist, Terri Lyne Carrington has emerged as one of the fiercest voices in jazz This album takes us back to the beginnings of her career as a band leader. Though Carrington was still a teenager when she recorded TLC & Friends, she was by no means an amateur; she was already an acclaimed jazz prodigy who’d shared the stage with the likes of Oscar Peterson, Clark Terry, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk.
As a result, her first recording session found her surrounded by seasoned sidemen who backed the likes of Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and Chet Baker: Kenny Barron on piano, George Coleman on saxophone, and Buster Williams on bass. Terri Lyne’s father, Sonny, also steps in for a solo on “Sonnymoon For Two ”
Originally self-released in 1981, it’s now being made widely available for the first time and features refreshed and expanded artwork.
Written and recorded after four years of personal and professional upheaval, Daughter represented a bracing new beginning for Lydia Loveless. Originally released on her own Honey, You’re Gonna Be Late label, Bloodshot is proud to bring this incredible album to a wider audience.
Recorded with Grammy-winning producer Tom Schick (Wilco, Mavis Staples, Norah Jones) at The Loft with her longtime accomplices–multiinstrumentalists Todd May and Jay Gasper, and drummer George Hondroulis–Loveless pushed herself to chase new ideas, sounds, and directions, making Daughtera revelation.
The album captured Loveless at her fiery best, with her songwriting stronger and exhibiting an even keener insight than ever. Critics took notice, praising the album has her best to date and naming it among the year’s best recordings.

THE BETHS WARM BLOOD
The Beths’ Warm Blood is a strong contender for the catchiest record you’ve never heard. Formed when four jazz students at the University of Auckland bonded over their shared love of the pop-punk sounds of their youth, The Beths bring new energy to the genre. This 5-song debut EP, a deliriously pleasurable statement of purpose, comes crammed with enough blissful hooks to carry through most bands’ careers.
Listeners for whom the tag “New Zealand indie rock” brings to mind the Flying Nun sound of bands like The Clean and The Chills may be surprised to find Warm Blood’s five unstoppable tunes landing closer to artists like Slant 6 and The Breeders. The nimble guitar work here moves from heavy riffing reminiscent of Sleater-Kinney to hazily bending lines that would make Stephen Malkmus and Mary Timony beam, while the joyous vocal harmonies from all four members bubble and swell to ecstatic crescendos that channel The Zombies’ Odessey and Oracle.
With impeccable production from guitarist Jonathan Pearce and stellar musicianship across the board, Warm Blood is a non-stop delight. Tracks like leadoff track and first single “Whatever,” the ridiculously addictive standout “Idea/Intent,” and “Rush Hour 3,” a playful ode to romance in this era of download-and-chill franchise films, take delight in the challenge of breathing new energy into the limitations of the 3-minute pop song. This U.S. re-release of Warm Blood (released in New Zealand in 2016) offers a perfectly distilled introduction to a band that has become a live favorite Down Under.

@ MIND PALACE MUSIC
It’s fitting that Philadelphia guitarist Victoria Rose and Baltimore producer/musician Stone Filipczak named their band @ (pronounced “At”) — a symbol that calls to mind the detachment of an email exchange or a Twitter mention. The folk-pop duo created their debut album Mind Palace Music almost entirely remotely from, sending each other recordings over iMessage from their respective cities throughout fall/winter 2020. But although its creators were 100 miles away, the 11-track album gleams with a sense of closeness, tied together with @’s penchant for deeply personal and candid lyrics.
With an affinity for blending digital with analog elements, @ describe Mind Palace Music as “hyperfolk,” though the record never feels self-indulgent — hitting the sweet spot between pleasantly familiar and refreshingly innovative. “We were pretty aware of trying to make something well-crafted that would hold up,” Filipczak says. “I was stoked that I could show some of the tracks to my grandma and she would be able to dig it. It probably doesn’t sound that different from, like, Simon and Garfunkel to her.”
Rose and Filipczak are just as inspired by the thoughtful delicacy of ambient pioneers like Laurie Spiegel as they are by the timeless quality of singer-songwriters like Vashti Bunyan. You can feel the influence of those ‘70s folk greats on songs like “Where’d You Put Me,” a drumfree incantation that culminates with a flute solo from Filipczak. Elsewhere, @ evoke the tender drone and foolproof melodies of Elliott Smith, Alex G, or Sparklehorse, like on the spare acoustic ditty “Friendship is Frequency” or the bittersweet “Cut From Toxic Cloth”: “While I’m waiting for my mind and face to sync/I smile to my heart and I think/I like you just the way you are,” Filipczak murmurs on the latter. A subtle eeriness looms in the background throughout Mind Palace Music, preventing it from feeling too outdated or hackneyed.
@ test their limits further on songs like the chugging closer “My Garden,” where Rose and Filipczak’s striking arrangements build to a triumphant coda as Rose mulls over the frustrations of a relationship’s natural ebbs and flows and the “curse” of desire: “I don’t want intensity, no/Just a way to warmth and amity,” she sings. @ know that some of the most rewarding moments in life don’t come easily, and Mind Palace Music is no exception. But sometimes, even the hard work flows out naturally: “It was truly a something from nothing type of experience,” Filipczak says. “We just shared a bunch of music until we started collaborating, and then once we started, we didn’t want to stop.”

SUNYEARS COME FETCH MY SOUL!
WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE CD/LP: JUNE 16, 2023
Peter Morén (Peter Bjorn and John) debuts his new project, SunYears, with an album of guitar based folk/ rock songs and numerous collaborations.
“As you get older, it gets easier to write songs because you become more vulnerable in a different way,” Morén explains of the bold and open-hearted song ‘Come Fetch My Soul!’ featuring Jess Williamson, offering, “it’s about being overwhelmed by the love you have for your partner, and this feeling of putting yourself in the hands of something or someone else.”
The 10-track album’s melodic wisdom immediately feels familiar yet is unexplored territory for Morén, who delivers a collection of tunes that instantly feel timeless. Ranging from wistful folk and Beatles-esque pop to psychedelic guitar jangle and shimmering balladry, the album is a result of nostalgic listening habits and thematically from dreams, most notably the rockabilly-esque track “Last Night I Dreamt I Met Phil & Don,” which takes inspiration from a dream meeting pop legends the Everly Brothers. For the album, Morén enlisted fellow indie artists Ron Sexsmith, Jess Williamson, Eric Johnson (Fruit Bats, Bonny Light Horseman), and Kathryn Williams, which resulted in multiple duets throughout the album. The closing track “Wake Up,” written during a songwriting retreat, features Ren Harvieu. “During that trip, we sang a lot together in different groups,” explains Morén, “and it was that spirituality of singing with other people that I want to bring into this record.”
An open-ended name that references both the classic sound of 1950’s Sun Records and the passage of time itself, SunYears has been years in the making with a figurative birth that came during the pandemic. With touring scrapped, Morén rediscovered his love of playing guitar in solitude and the art of collaboration, which he did with a tight-knit group of friends and peers in his hometown of Stockholm.
Despite evoking the music of the past, Come Fetch My Soul ultimately embodies Morén’s desire to look to the future, both of the project and of his career as a songwriter in general. “At my age, I’m becoming more relaxed when it comes to how I make music,” he reflects. “I feel more comfortable now, and I could make music like this for the rest of my life.”

Pablo Meets Mr Bassie 7”:
RT-0395-S
This is the re-release of our second ever Rough Trade single release.
Richard Scott was working with us, developing a mail order and then a distribution company. He had deep Jamaican connections as he had been part of the management team for Third World.
He made a deal with Joan Higgins a fifteen year old relative of Augustus Pablo who worked the Saturday shift in Pablo’s Kingston Record shop. A man called Everton Da Silva was also involved, perhaps as a go between. I always maintain this is one of the best ever Rough Trade releases, if not actually the best. One of my very bad jokes is that it was all downhill from this point. In any case it’s a monumental record and very likely justification for the whole enterprise.
-Geoff Travis, Founder & Co-owner of Rough Trade RecordsBlurtations is the follow-up to Snapped Ankles’ 2018 Record Store Day release Violations, which included woodland reworkings of songs by Can, The Fugs, Joey Beltram and Comateens. On this, the woodwose have focussed their magpie eyes on the work of a single artist - Ted Milton’s post-punk Dada-jazz stalwarts Blurt. It offers another tantalising glimpse into the rarefied record collections of these elusive forest people.
Blurt are a key part of the surrealist Snapped Ankles DNA. An early iteration of the band played a version of ‘Planet You’ from different rooms of a dilapidated squat at a TOPOPHOBIA art performance night, and ‘The Fish Needs A Bike’ has found its way into the current blistering live set. They’ve recently struck up a friendship with Ted Milton, and the woodwose have been invited to DJ at Blurt’s upcoming show at London’s legendary 100 Club.

The bones of a bird, stripped of flesh and feather, give no sign of the heights and depths a living bird can reach, the lengths it can travel, or the songs it can sing. The same is true of the bones of the human hand. For all their strength and delicacy, seeing them skeletal and stark obscures our knowledge of the rhythmic energy with which they engage space, the burdens they can bear, the music they can produce. Yet, in both bird and hand, the foundation of grace and motion remain. Music above all else proves this to be true. To experience a guitarist playing is to experience the hand taking flight.
This flight is the essence of all of Danny Paul Grody’s work. His compositions seem to be the sonic tracings of migrations patterns. They grant us that avian instinct to simply take to air and trust our innate knowledge of the route.
Arc Of Day is Grody’s first collection of new music since his self-released Furniture Music II in 2021 and first with Three Lobed Recordings since 2013’s Between Two Worlds. Born of explorations with Rich Douthit on drums & percussion, the album charts a path from grief and isolation to re-emergence, picking up Trevor Montgomery on bass, Chuck Johnson on pedal steel, and Jonathan Seilaff on clarinet along the way. Arc Of Day not only encapsulates the journey from bone to flesh and feather, it renews the listener like birdsong in Spring after the long Winter silence.

“…as if Brian Eno had cut an LP for John Fahey’s Takoma Records sometime back in the mid-70s…” Tyler Wilcox, Aquarium Drunkard
“…there are memorable note patterns all over… (Grody’s work), but a deeper impression is left by the way Grody turns them into mantras. His playing stretches time, making even his busiest passages patient and meditative.” Marc
Masters, Pitchfork- “Grody’s guitar roots sometimes reflect traditionalist threads, but often weave in the unconventional: the picking of the West African kora, for example, or plains of New Zealand and New York minimalist drone. His wider musical pursuits know few bounds electronics, long form improvisation, multiple electric bands. (Grody’s music) is a precise experiment in revised composition, chancing his acoustic playing less towards a melody, and more towards the areas surrounding it.”

The record features Hunter with Casino Steel, Darrell Bath, Honest John Plain and ex-Pistol Glen Matlock on bass and original Mo The Hoople sideman Blue Weaver plays keyboards on five tracks.
The album was produced by Bjørn Nessjø and was well received, thanks in part to excellent word-of-mouth and a hit single in ‘My Revoluon’. Aer Hunter and Steel agreed that Nessjø was the man for the job, they arranged a few rehearsals with the band before herding them to Abbey Road Studios in July of ´94 with engineer Rune Nordal.
The Norwegian producer had a reputaon as one who could use his arranging and orchestraon skills to create songs from slivers of musical ideas and meet deadlines. The result was a real cracker.
The special LP edion is pressed on heavyweight vinyl and comes with a gatefold sleeve with notes from Michael Monroe, Darrell Bath and Casino Steel. The outer sleeve has a brand new design.

Jim Ghedi & Toby Hay
Eponymous collaboration between Jim Ghedi & Toby Haytheir first since 2018's 'The Hawksworth Grove Sessions' and their debut for Topic Records. Postponed for two years due to the small matter of a global pandemic, finally, as some semblance of normalit y took shape, in February 2022, the duo headed into Giant Wafer Studios, mid -Wales, with very little rehearsal time and recorded the entire album live, with no edits or overdubs over three days.
Tracklisting:
Jim Ghedi and Toby Hay are both prolific, praised and established artists in their own right. Hailing from South Yorkshire, Ghedi's previous work has often been instrumental, exploring the natural world and his relationship to it, as seen on 2018's A Hymn For Ancient Land but also developing into using his voice, songwriting and traditional material on his more recent album, In The Furrows Of Common Place. Toby Hay, hailing from the Cambrian mountains, professes likewise, that the landscape serves as eternal muse and the spiritual groundwork of his entrancing guita r playing which has dazzled critics and listeners alike throughout his career. All of this makes their collaboration with the world's oldest independent label and custodians of UK folk music, Topic Records, a natural home for this exceptional record.
The album artwork includes beautiful liner notes by Andrew Male, senior associate editor of Mojo magazine .

Alex LoRe & Weirdear
Evening Will Find Itself
At the heart of saxophonist and composer Alex LoRe's music making is a fearless approach to exploring the fault lines and contradictions within his art: reconciling the timeless post-bop verities explored by his friends and mentors Greg Osby and Bunky Green with his own awareness of the possibilities of the seemingly opposite extremes of through-composition and freedom.
His Whirlwind Records debut Evening Will Find Itselfmarks a powerful step forward in his journey to reconcile these tensions to create a music that isn't limited by expectations, always centered around the unapologetic warmth and humanity of his own playing, and carried forward by his band of long - term musical partners: Glenn Zaleski on piano, Desmond White on bass and (relative) newcomer Allan Mednard on drums.
'This album is me trying to find some different sound worlds to exist in, striking a new balance between notated music and improvisation, giving the musicians freedom to explore those worlds'.

Naya Baaz (Rez Abbasi & Josh Feinberg)
Charm
Charm is the debut release from Naya Baaz - a groundbreaking new collaboration between two extraordinary musicians, both of whom have achieved a rare level of mastery in demanding musical traditions from opposite sides of the globe.
Recent Guggenheim Fellow, Rez Abbasi moved from Karachi to Californ ia as a child and has built up a formidable reputation as a guitarist who combines his love of jazz (evidenced on his last major release, 'Django - Shift') with an international array of influences from South Asia and beyond: Josh Feinbergis one of a handful of Western musicians to excel at the challenging legacy of the Hindustani sitar, specialising in the Maihar Gharana style from North India, and also a jazz bass player who studied with Paul Bley and Dave Holland.
"Josh earnestly understands jazz harmony and chromaticism as well as Indian musical traditions" says Rez 'That's a very rare combination'. Completing the endlessly flexible line-up are Jennifer Vincent's bespoke five-string cello, opening up possibilities to add both basslines and melodies, and Satoshi Takeishi's specially augmented drumset.

Deepriver is the recently formed intercontinental project of Cape Town-based Jason van Wyk and long time Stockholm-based collaborator Joni Ljungqvist. Having worked previously in collaboration mining the more introspective side of trance, Deepriver’s inaugural aural statement, “Volume One”, finds the two experimenting with atmosphere and composition to maximal effect. Van Wyk's recent viscerally experimental direction seamlessly coalesces with Ljungqvist's conceptually reflective approach in a way that recalls the sounds and nostalgia of electronic music from decades past.

Heavenly – Le Jardin De Heavenly
‘Re-issue album includes relevant single releases, a 7” booklet with lyrics, and new sleeve notes by the members of the band. LE JARDIN DE HEAVENLY - the second album. By the time their second album was ready to roll Heavenly were an established part of the Sarah Records stable in the UK and honorary members of the International Pop Underground in the USA, where Le Jardin De Heavenly was released by K Records. The songs on the album are rich with pop melodies and complex harmonies but the band aren’t holding back – Mathew’s drumming is intense; Peter’s guitar flourishes are sharp-edged and loud. There are still elements of the gentler twee sound that had become the band ’s hallmark (or curse): Different Day and So Little Deserve are winsome, delicate pop songs. But there are also swirls of early shoegaze – Starshy is a dreamy, atmospheric confection heavy with reverb and harmony. And there ’s a defiant attitude in there too: I’m Not Scared Of You is the sound of a young woman refusing to be cowed by a male bully. It’s not hard to see how Heavenly ended up as part of the riot grrrl scene in the US (an encounter that would have a profound influence on the band ’s later output). At the heart of the album, ‘C Is The Heavenly Option’ feels like a perfect celebration of Heavenly’s transatlantic existence, and the marriage of two indie traditions: Amelia ’s English pop voice duets with Calvin Johnson ’s gravelly American baritone while the band alternate between cute melody and all -out thrash. It’s a joyous combination. The eight -track album was released by Sarah Records and by K Records. The Skep Wax re-issue of ‘Le Jardin De Heavenly’ includes Heavenly’s third Sarah Records single – So Little Deserve/I’m Not Scared Of You ’ and the first K Records single‘She Says/Escort Crash On Marston Street’.

Jim Jones All Stars - Gimme The Grease
Ako-Lite Records 7” AL003 5063176003072
The explosive new project from garage rock godfather Jim Jones takes to the road to foul up your town! Jim Jones All Stars have announced details of their long-awaited, full-length UK and European tour in support of their new 7” single, ‘Gimme The Grease’, out now on Ako-Lite Records. This is the first physical bite of their forthcoming album, ‘Ain’t No Peril’, which is scheduled for an autumn release. Returning to his natural environments of the stage and analogue studio, Jim Jones cements his position as the Grand PooBah of red, raw rock’n’roll and the facilitator of illicit sonic thrills. Having spearheaded garage rock pioneers Thee Hypnotics, and international favourites The Jim Jones Revue, Jim is at a point in his career where he is drawing from past, present, and future. Joined by Jim Jones Revue members Gavin Jay (bass) and Elliot Mortimer (piano and keys), drummer Chris Ellul (The Heavy), veteran punk blues guitarist Carlton Mounsher (The Swamps), and the threeway tenor/baritone sax attack of Stuart Dace, Chuchi Malapersona and Tom Hodges, this is the filthy grind and sonic ramalama that you’ve all been waiting for! Having made a midnight offering at Clarksdale, Mississippi's legendary crossroads in the Deep South, ‘Gimme The Grease’ was recorded at Memphis Magnetic studios in Memphis, Tennessee – and it’s impossible not to feel that Southern alchemy oozing from this music. “When you’re recording within spitting distance of the Mississippi river, there’s something about that heavy Memphis air that changes the way that you hear the groove and grind,” says Jim Jones. “’Gimme The Grease’ captures that feeling and bathes in that magic.”

LP PICI0050LP 0798234005822
CD PICI0050CD 0798234005839
These days everyone loves The Fall, but rarely has a band's rise to cult status been quite as lengthy, unpredictable and unprecedented as that of those lovable Mancunian misfits who went through more line -up comings and goings than anyone sane would bother to count. Martin Bramah, The Fall's singer until Mark E Smith's lesser guitar skills caused them to swap places, was, per Daryl Easlea, "possibly the last true equal to Smith in the group" and likewise the longest survivor of the original line -up. Yet while The Fall was later famous for their legendary productivity, Bramah often went great spans of time between releases, releasing fewer albums in thirty-five years (under any guise) than he has in the last seven with Blue Orchids - who already have a fantastic new album in the can. What caused HOUSE Of ALL to come together is something of a mystery. Bramah has joined forces with four other mighty Fall alumni: Steve Hanley, The Fall's longest-serving bassist, as well as his brother Paul Hanley, who drummed on what may be the best run of Fall records, from "Grotesque" to "Bend Sinister". The three have also played together as Factory Star, for a brief period. Joining them are two surprise members - drummer Simon Wolstencroft, who joined the Fall around the time Paul left, and more surprisingly, guitarist Pete Greenway, The Fall's longserving and final guitarist who has, to our knowledge, never played with the other four before. And the album? Recorded in a burst of intense creativity, we won't tempt to propagandise you, the album speaks or itself, but it wouldn't be a false boast to say that it stands with much of the best Fall or Blue Orchids music, displaying an energy and psychic impulse all its own, each member playing as sharply and with as much drive as ever, around manic motorik grooves and a shocking lack of 'compromise'. It's an album of depth which demands multiple visits to uncover its many dimensions, yet it still satisfies upon first listen.
