Everyone in St Louis is already planning where to watch the opening game in St Louis against the Milwaukee Brewers on April 11, and the Cardinals are already preparing for a great season.

For this season Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak opted mostly to stay the course with a roster that won 100 games last season, instead of looking for new talent.

This is Missouri’s team, and it is built Missouri’s way, meaning that Cardinals will be developing players in the Cardinals system and then giving them a chance to rise to the big leagues. And this has been a plan with proven.....

The Link Between Talcum Powder and Ovarian Cancer

or decades women have used baby powder and talc as part of their routine hygiene. Some of these products such as “Shower to Shower” talc (formerly owned by Johnson & Johnson but sold to Valeant Pharmaceuticals in 2012) are specifically marketed to women with tag lines such as, “A sprinkle a day keeps the odor away”.

Johnson & Johnson still manufactures and sells various forms of talcum powder under the Johnson & Johnson brand name and the Shower to Shower web site still claims that “Shower to Shower can be used all over your body”.

Studies have linked the use of talcum powder in the genital area with Ovarian Cancer. Every year over 20,000 cases of new ovarian cancer are detected and 14,000 women die of this type of cancer.

One leading expert in this field, Harvard epidemiologist Daniel Cramer, has stated that about half of all new ovarian cancer cases detected each year, or about 10,000 cases per year, are directly linked to the use of talcum powder in the genital or perineal area by women.

Making matters worse is the fact that ovarian cancer is often associated with a high mortality rate because there are often very few initial symptoms and in many cases the cancer is detected only after it has spread throughout the pelvic region and abdomen making it much harder to treat.

On February 22, 2016, a jury in the City of St. Louis ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay 72 Million dollars to the surviving family members of a woman, Jacqueline Fox, who was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer after years of using talcum powder as part of her normal personal hygiene routine. The jury said that internal company documents were critical in their decision making process in that they revealed the company had known about the link between their products and ovarian cancer since the 1970’s but had failed to warn the public about these dangers. After a three week trial in the City of St. Louis, it took jurors less than 4 hours to hold Johnson

& Johnson liable to the family of the deceased Jacqueline Fox under theories of fraud, negligence and conspiracy.

Many industry critics have commented on the fact that this case is yet another example of how far a company will go to continue reaping profits from their products, even after becoming aware that it could pose a danger to the health and safety of the public. Large corporations often make calculated decisions in which they weigh the profits they would lose by pulling a product form the shelves versus the potential payout to claimants they hurt down the road. This can often result in a company continuing to sell a product they know poses a danger to those who use it. Compounding the problems is the fact that the corporate executives who make these types of decisions are financially rewarded on the basis of short term sales growth and not on doing what is right for the community or in helping their company avoid exposure to lawsuits decades down the road. Unfortunately, these are short sighted and short term decisions being made that expose people to serious dangers.

One juror says he voted for a verdict in favor of the Plaintiffs largely based on the Johnson and Johnson memos that acknowledged but attempted to cover up the risks of talc and even influence the regulation boards. One of the leading attorneys felt that the documents were in place for years – as if J&J had been preparing to be sued at some point. Strong consumer advocates claim that J&J is no better than big tobacco in terms of exposing the public to unnecessary risks. Incredibly, one internal document suggested a strategy of marketing talcum powder towards a less educated population as others became more aware of the health risks.

Another internal document complains that use of talc powder is decreasing as more people become aware of the health risks. The document lays out a strategy to counter this decrease by marketing more aggressively to blacks

and Latinos, the demographics that have been identified as historically using more talcum powder. There are over 1,200 lawsuits still pending against Johnson and Johnson related to the use of talcum powder causing ovarian cancer. It remains to be seen whether J&J will modify how it sells this product or warns the public but for the moment a 72 million dollar verdict goes a long

way in telling them how we feel in St. Louis about a large company putting profits before people.

This report shows essentially no change in ASD prevalence, the proportion of school aged-children with ASD, from the previous report released in 2014. However, it is too soon to know whether ASD prevalence in the United States might be starting to stabilize. CDC will continue tracking ASD prevalence to better understand changes over time.

It’s important to remember that children can be connected to services even before an official diagnosis is made.”

CDC’s “Learn the Signs. Act Early.” program provides parents, childcare professionals, and healthcare providers free resources, in English and Spanish, for monitoring children’s development.

El Amicus Curiae Republicano Respecto A Las Acciones Ejecutivas Migratorias

“El líder republicano mencionó la inmigración. Ayer, él y otros republicanos del Senado presentaron ante la Suprema Corte de los Estados Unidos un amicus curiae sobre el caso Texas v. EE.UU., en apoyo el reto legal de Texas a las acciones ejecutivas migratorias del presidente Obama.

“En el último Congreso, trabajamos de manera bipartidista para elaborar una buena reforma migratoria integral. La aprobamos. Pero debido al poder del Tea Party – o ‘los locos’, como les decía el presidente de la Cámara Boehner—esa legislación no fue sometida a votación en la Cámara de Representantes. Si el presidente de la Cámara Boehner hubiera permitido una votación, el proyecto de ley hubiera sido aprobado por amplio margen.

Los demócratas hubieran votado a favor y suficientes republicanos hubieran votado a favor. Eso no sucedió.

“El presidente tenía que tomar medidas respecto a la inmigración. El presidente sentó los cimientos. En su discurso del Estado de la Unión, dijo, no están aprobando legislación, así que ‘Voy a tener que usar mi autoridad ejecutiva para lograr las cosas’”.

Dio prioridad a lo que quería hacer. La orden fue tan importante para los niños. Se llama acción diferida. A los DREAMers y a los padres de ciudadanos estadounidenses se les permitió permanecer en el país, y eso fue lo correcto.

Republican Immigration Amicus Brief

The Republican leader mentioned immigration. Yesterday, he and other Senate Republicans filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court in the Texas v. U.S. case supporting Texas’ challenge to President Obama’s executive actions on immigration.

In the last Congress, we worked very hard together in a bipartisan fashion to form a good, comprehensive immigration reform bill. We passed it. But due to the power of the Tea Party – or as Speaker Boehner referred to them, “the crazies” – that legislation didn’t get a vote in the House of Representatives. If Speaker Boehner had allowed a vote, it would have passed overwhelmingly. Democrats would have voted for it and enough Republicans would have voted for it. It would have been a big vote coming out of there. It didn’t happen.

The president had to do something with immigration. The president laid the groundwork. He spoke at the State of the Union address, saying, you’re not passing any legislation so, “I’m going to have to use my executive power to get things done.”

He prioritized what he wanted to do. The order was so important to boys and girls and their parents. It’s called deferred action. The DREAMers and parents of U.S. citizens were allowed to stay in the country, and that was the right thing to do.

He also has prioritized deportations, going after criminals, not families, and enforcing the law, so he’s done a very good job. And I think it’s also very important to note that these administrative actions the president has taken are nothing unique. We can go back to the days of Dwight D. Eisenhower, a good Republican president who did a lot of stuff administratively.

That is why I joined 38 of my Senate colleagues and 186 House members last month in an amicus to the Supreme Court making the case that the executive actions are well within the president’s legal authority.

Bajo Grassley, El Comité Judicial Está Incumpliendo Su Deber

“Como senadores federales, tenemos la obligación constitucional de considerar los nominados a importantes puestos.

Es una de nuestras responsabilidades constitucionales. Los jueces juegan un papel esencial en nuestra sociedad, y deberíamos dar a los candidatos capaces la oportunidad que merecen. Desafortunadamente, el Senado republicano se ha negado a cumplir con su deber.

“El número de nominaciones judiciales confirmadas durante este Congreso es el nivel más bajo en décadas. Hasta la fecha, el Senado republicano solo ha confirmado 16 nominaciones judiciales. Es un juez al mes. Compárenlo con los últimos años del gobierno de George W. Bush, cuando el entonces presidente de comité Leahy y el Senado demócrata confirmó a 40 jueces.

“Pero para entender la disfunción del comité del senador Grassley debemos considerar cuán lentamente están aprobando nominaciones judiciales él y los republicanos. Tendríamos que hacer revista de seis décadas para encontrar un comité judicial menos productivo que el actual comité de Grassley.

“Los republicanos sin lugar a duda dirán que su comité ha dejado de trabajar porque este es el último año de la presidencia de Obama. Eso es simplemente una tontería.

“Ya que el presidente del comité judicial se rehúsa a ocuparse del poder judicial ¿en qué gasta su tiempo el comité republicano?

Sabemos que el comité de Grassley se niega a considerar al juez Merrick Garland, nominado del presidente Barack Obama a la Suprema Corte. Sabemos que el comité de Grassley se niega a aprobar debidamente las nominaciones a las cortes de distrito y de circuito. Lo que sí queda claro: El comité judicial republicano está incumpliendo su deber.

“Caos es lo que los republicanos están trayendo a la rama judicial. Desde la Corte Suprema hasta las cortes de circuito y las de distrito, todo el poder judicial está bajo ataque por este Senado republicano.

Y después de haber paralizado el sistema judicial, el líder republicano y el senador Grassley desean entregárselo a Donald Trump. Eso sería un desastre.

“Eso no es lo que el pueblo estadounidense quiere. Quiere que los republicanos cumplan con su deber constitucional y les brinden la debida consideración a estos jueces.

“Así que le digo al presidente del comité judicial: Deja de obstruir estas nominaciones. Haz lo que han hecho otros presidentes del comité judicial y procede con estas importantes nominaciones lo más pronto posible. O para ponerlo en término más sencillos – cumple con tu deber”.

Judiciary Committee Is Not Doing Its Job

I understand why, in my remarks I’ll make that very clear in a few minutes, why my friend, the Republican leader is doing everything he can to throw a good light on the Judiciary Committee. It’s kind of hard to do with what’s going on today. And this bill that we’re going to vote on at 5:30, we don’t – this would have passed unanimous consent. Everybody knows that. We don’t need to take up time of the Senate on a bill that would pass just like that. Doing that because it focuses less attention on the inadequacy of the Judiciary Committee.

The Defend Trade Secrets Act was reported out of the committee easily, no problem.

It was a bill that everybody agreed on. So there may be some reasons that I don’t see today why the Judiciary Committee should be given a few pats on the back. The problem is that the committee does not deserve any pats on the back at this stage.

As United States senators, we have a constitutional obligation to consider nominees to important positions. It’s one of our constitutional responsibilities. Judges play an essential role in our society and we should give qualified nominees the fair shot they deserve. Sadly, the Republican Senate has refused to do its job.

They have a new standard. Unless the judge-to-be passes the National Rifle

Association’s, as stated by the Republican leader on national television, Republicans can’t vote for him.

Now, the Judiciary Committee has been hammered – and that’s an understatement – day after day in the state of Iowa, the home state of the chairman of the committee.

This is a headline last week in the Des Moines Register, the largest newspaper in the state: “Grassley leads slowdown of judicial confirmations.”

The Republican-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee and its chairman, Senator Grassley, have fallen far behind any comparable Senate in confirming judicial nominations.

Reading directly from the Des Moines Register article – quote: “Even before the current controversy over consideration of a Supreme Court justice, action on federal court nominations has slowed markedly since U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley took control of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

“Since Republicans won a Senate majority in 2014, the number of President Barack Obama’s nominees winning confirmation to the bench has fallen compared with previous years and long-term averages, as have the number advancing out of Grassley’s Judiciary Committee, according to data from the Congressional Research

Service and the federal judiciary.”

The article also quotes Professor Sheldon Goldman, an expert on judicial confirmations at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Here’s what he said: “With Republicans taking over the Senate, the strategy has been to obstruct, delay and slow-walk these nominees at every stage of the process.”

Statistics from the non-partisan Congressional Research Service confirm Professor Goldman’s assertion. Under Chairman Grassley’s leadership, the Judiciary Committee is grinding the nominations process to a halt.

The number of judicial nominations confirmed this Congress is the worst in decades. To date, this Republicancontrolled Senate has confirmed only 16 judicial nominations. That’s one judge a month. Contrast that with the last years of George W. Bush’s presidency, when then-Chairman Leahy and the Democratic Senate confirmed 40 judges. Forty confirmations under Chairman Leahy, 16 under Chairman Grassley. The numbers speak for themselves.

But to better understand the dysfunction of Senator Grassley’s committee, we have to consider the slow pace at which he and Republicans are reporting judicial nominations. We have to go back more than six decades to find a Senate Judiciary Committee that was less productive than Chairman Grassley’s committee is today.

Republicans will doubtless claim that their committee has stopped working because this is the last year of Obama’s presidency.

That’s nonsense. In 1988, President Reagan’s last year, the Senate Judiciary committee reported out Circuit and District Court nominations as late as October. The Senate considered President Reagan, President Clinton and President George W. Bush’s judicial nominations in the eighth year of their terms.

The Republican leader is on record advocating for the confirmation of judicial nominees in a President’s last year in office.

In July of 2008, the senior Senator from Kentucky said – quote: “Even with lame duck Presidents, there is a historical standard of fairness as to confirming judicial nominees, especially circuit court nominees.”

Those are the Republican leader’s own words. Yet now he refuses to extend that “historical standard of fairness” to President Obama’s nominees. Why are Republicans changing the rules for President Obama’s nominees?

Given that the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee refuses to attend to the judiciary, how is the Republican committee spending its time? We know Chairman Grassley’s committee is refusing to consider President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Merrick Garland.

We know Chairman Grassley’s committee is refusing to adequately report district and circuit court nominees. This much is clear: The Republican Judiciary Committee is not doing its job.

Instead, the senior Senator from Iowa has taken his marching orders from the Republican leader, and has instituted a blockade of judicial nominations at every level. This once proud, powerful Judiciary Committee set up hundreds of years ago has become a mere shadow of its former self. He has turned the Judiciary Committee into an extension of the Republican leader’s

office.

This is the same gridlock that the Republican leader has imposed upon the Senate for the last eight years. Since his party assumed the majority in the Senate last January, the Republican leader’s carefully-orchestrated obstruction of judicial nominations has accelerated to historic levels and judicial emergencies have nearly tripled. The Republican leader comes to the floor all the time talking about the success of the Senate. No matter how many times you say a falsehood, it is still false.

Leader McConnell once declared himself the “proud guardian of gridlock.” Senator Grassley has become his most willing disciple. It’s disappointing that the senior senator from Iowa has surrendered his committee to the Republican leader.

The lack of progress on judges should alarm Republicans senators. Take for example, the nomination of Waverly Crenshaw, who was recommended by Senators Alexander and Corker to be a district judge for the Middle District of Tennessee.

Mr. Crenshaw is a superb nominee who has broken barriers all his life. He is currently a partner at a well-renowned Nashville law firm where he became the first African American partner in 1990. The senior senator from Tennessee said that Mr. Crenshaw would be “an excellent federal district judge.” He was reported out of the Judiciary Committee unanimously in July 2015 – more than nine months ago.

The vacancy in the Middle District of Tennessee is a judicial emergency meaning there are more cases than the judges on the court can handle. The junior senator from Tennessee recently said: “I know there is a tremendous load of work in the Nashville office that needs to get done, and we’ve talked a great deal with the other judges there and know this position needs to be confirmed.”

Last month, the senators from Maryland asked to bring the Crenshaw nomination to a vote, but the assistant Republican leader objected. The senior senator from Texas said it would lead to “chaos” to schedule a vote on Mr. Crenshaw.

Chaos is exactly what Republicans are bringing to the Judiciary. From the Supreme Court to the Circuit Courts to the District Courts, our entire Judicial branch of government is under siege by this Republican Senate. And after they’ve crippled the Judiciary, the Republican leader and Chairman Grassley want to hand it over to Donald Trump. That would be disastrous.

That’s not what the American people want. They want Republicans to do their constitutional duty and give these judges due consideration.

So I say to the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee: Stop blocking these nominees.

Do what other Judiciary Chairs have done and process these important nominations as soon as possible. Or to put it simply – just do your job. Because this – a historic slowdown of judicial confirmations – isn’t your job. And it’s not what the people of Iowa sent you here to do.

Mira a tu vida hoy, ¿qué ideas o estrategias de control se le sigue utilizando y que son un reflejo perfecto de la forma en que estaban inconscientemente programado para hacer frente a la emoción crecía?

The Emotional Control Switch: Why Nothing You Do To Feel Better Ever Works W hen we judge certain emotions as bad, and others as good, an emotional control switch is triggered by those emotions that we judge as bad. this causes us to resist them and whatever we resist, persists.

Do me a favor…

Close your eyes and for a few minutes, think back to your childhood. Think about being emotional in your childhood. Try to remember those times that you were happy or excited or sad or mad or afraid. How did the people around you react?

Now try to remember times the people around you felt strong emotions. How were they treated by others? How did they deal with having those emotions?

What did emotions mean in the family or culture or society you grew up in?

Mentally review each emotion. Which emotions were good and therefore acceptable? Which emotions were bad and therefore unacceptable? Which ones were expressed, which ones were suppressed?

What were you told or indirectly taught was the bet way to handle your emotions?

What emotional control strategies did the people around you use?

Look at your life today, what ideas or control strategies are you still using that are a perfect reflection of the way you were subconsciously programmed to deal with emotion growing up?

I want you to watch my video titled: Meaning, the self destruct button and while you are watching it, think about how this video applies simply to emotion. What did you decide that anger meant or sadness meant, or fear meant?

It is normal to want to feel good. The basic survival instinct is to shy away

from pain and go towards pleasure.

This is not in and of itself a problem.

This instinct in and of itself does not cause suffering. Suffering is caused when instead of going towards pleasure, we resist the pain. And this, is what we have done with emotion.

I want you to imagine that in the back of your head, there is a control switch, like a light switch on a wall. Except instead of light and dark, this control switch controls good and bad. This switch is designed to be triggered and switch on whenever you encounter something that you have judged as bad. If you register something as bad, you register it as a threat. So when this switch goes on because it thinks it is encountering something bad, your body responds to that threat by going into fight or flight mode. You either try to escape or fight with that thing.

Escaping from something and or fighting with something is an attempt to CONTROL that thing, yourself or the course of events to follow.

The problem is, when we judge certain emotions as bad, this control switch is triggered by those emotions. It is essentially an emotional control switch.

We immediately try to control these emotions by escaping from or fighting with them. The thoughts we think about the emotion we are having, cause us to immediately add emotion to emotion and this is like adding kerosene to a fire that is already blazing. No matter what we do to feel better, nothing works.

For example, lets say growing up when you expressed anxiety your parent turned to you in an exasperated manner and said “stop being such a

fraidy cat, there’s no reason to last like this come on now” you would have gotten the message that anxiety is bad and perhaps that if you feel it, but your parents are right that there is no reason to feel that way and yet you feel that way that there must be something wrong with you. In the future, if you feel anxious, your control switch will turned on because you have been conditioned to see anxiety as bad. you will start to fear yourself because you’ll feel like something is wrong with you and therefore, you would feel anxious about feeling anxious.

This is how to know that your Control switch has turned on. You will start to feel bad about feeling bad. for example, you’ll feel angry about feeling depressed or anxious about feeling anxious or afraid about feeling anger or sad about

feeling depressed.

You will also immediately revert to all of the emotional control strategies that are linked to that control switch such as: Drinking alcohol, reading a book, going running, eating, shooting up heroine, distracting yourself, obsessively writing affirmations, positively focusing, arguing with and contradicting your negative thoughts, All of which are an attempt to make the emotion go away because you have judged it as bad. You believed the story that a particular emotion is bad.

This is the reason that it doesn’t work to positively focus negative emotion away.

Control in and of itself is resistance.

So, the minute positive focus becomes a tool of maintaining control, it now serves resistance instead of allowing or

deliberate creation.

It isn’t helpful or useful to judge your negative emotions as bad. For more information about how to deal with negative emotions, watch my video on YouTube titled: The emotional wakeup call.

Now before you assume that we only have this reaction to negative emotions, it’s important to know that we can be conditioned to believe that positive emotion is bad as well.

The more your parents and caregivers needed to maintain control over how they felt and therefore control over how you felt, the more resistant they were to all emotions, both good and bad.

It is time to become aware of this emotional control switch when it goes off within us. The time has come to notice ourselves resisting our own emotion in the moment it arises.

This is in fact the initiation of a downward spiral. It ensures that our emotions will work like quick sand where we struggle against them and end up drowning. If we are in a situation where we feel like nothing ever works and like we will never feel better no matter how hard we try, it is because we are approaching our life from that very angle… that we must feel better because negative emotion is not ok. Anxiety is not ok, anger is not ok, sadness is not ok, grief is not ok. The way we feel is bad and so it has to change.

We think thoughts like, “what have I done to deserve this or what is wrong with me or I wish I didn’t feel like this or I can’t handle this or why am I like this or the very worst…

I shouldn’t feel like this.”

When you feel this emotional control switch go off, switch it off by practicing releasing resistance to the emotion you are feeling resistance towards and wanting to control. Allow and accept the emotion.

Question the idea that this emotion is bad or good. Ask yourself, what am I making this emotion mean and then go to work dismantling that meaning. Thoughts and emotions themselves don’t cause us pain. It’s believing them that causes us pain. If you have judged an emotion as bad, get outside the box by trying to find approval for it. Why is that emotion good? What is this emotion trying to tell me, what is it asking me to do differently or to change about my life? Allow yourself to go back in time to when you were programmed to believe that the emotion was bad and un-do that trauma. Painful emotions only become chronic (as in nothing you do ever works to make you feel better) if your emotional control switch is switched on and as such you are in resistance to the emotion you feel. This is the difference between temporary discomfort and long term suffering.

that if you’re trying to lose weight through diet, a high-protein eating plan might stand above the rest because it actually improves the quality of your sleep.

“Our research suggests that what you eat while losing weight can influence whether or not sleep improves,” said the study’s author, Wayne W. Campbell, a professor

of nutrition science at Purdue University. “And consuming a higher-protein diet improved sleep.”

Campbell and his team conducted two studies to determine that a high protein diet improved sleep. One study found that the source of protein, whether vegetable or animal, did not affect

sleep as much as the proportion of calories coming from protein did. The second study — one of the longest of its kind to look at the effect of protein intake on sleep — showed higher rates of improvement in sleep for individuals on a high protein diet compared with those consuming lower amounts of protein.

Protein source doesn’t matter, but the amount does

The first study included 34 overweight or obese adults who consumed diets in which protein came from either beef and pork or soy and legumes. For each group, the dieters were further split into three subsets, eating diets that were 10 percent protein, 20 percent protein, or 30 percent protein.

Researchers measured participants’ sleep quality based on their self-reported global sleep scores, which, in addition to measuring how long you sleep, also incorporate other sleep quality factors like whether or not you use sleep aids, how often you wake during the night, how deep you sleep, and how long it takes you to fall asleep.

While the type of protein didn’t seem to affect sleep quality — both the beef-and-pork and soy-andlegume consumers had similar scores — sleep was improved for those whose diets consisted of 20 percent protein compared to the 10 percent-protein

dieters. (Sleep did not further improve for those whose diets consisted of 30 percent protein.)

Higher protein means sweeter sleep To further investigate how the amount of protein dieters ate affected their sleep, the researchers set up a second study that only compared sleep quality in high-protein versus normal-protein dieters.

The second study included 44 overweight or obese adults were randomized to follow either the high- or normal-protein diet for four months. The foods in the diet were consistent for each group, except that the high-protein diet included added milk protein powder, while the normalprotein dieters got carbohydrate powder. Protein intake for each dieter was assigned based on their body weight, and high-protein dieters were assigned about twice as much protein as the normal-protein dieters.

Researchers again used global sleep scores for the participants, but this time had the participants update their scores at monthly benchmarks.

The number of high-protein dieters reporting a poor sleep score decreased throughout the study period, with only half as many dieters reporting a poor sleep score at the end of four months as at the start of the study. While the number of normal-protein dieters in the normal-protein group who

reported being poor sleepers jumped throughout the study, it had increased by the end of the four months.

Why your sleep likes protein So why does a high-protein diet encourage better sleep?

Previous research suggests brain neurotransmitters or other biomarkers associated with the sleep-wake cycle may be influenced by what we eat.

More specifically, findings have also hinted that higher protein intake may change the body’s insulin and circulating amino acids, both of which affect levels of serotonin and melatonin,

which in turn affect sleep. Even though Campbell’s research did not measure those biomarkers, he says this might be the explanation behind his study’s findings, too.

We’ll leave it to the experts to determine why sleep and protein seem to mix well. But the data so far build a pretty good case for making protein a key part of your diet if you’re trying to lose weight, both to shed those pounds and catch your Zs.

EMBRACING THE PASSIONS OF SPAIN

St. Louis (March 16, 2016) – Passion, power and spectacle – Chicago’s celebrated Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater, currently celebrating its 40th anniversary, has performed all over the world, featuring an extraordinary repertoire of more than 125 dances in a wide range of Spanish dance styles. From flamenco and traditional folkloric to classical and contemporary, the 40 sensational dancers, singers, musicians and international guest artists of Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater highlight the mosaic of Hispanic cultures from around the world while seducing the crowd with a mixture of romance and unpredictable choreography. Dance St. Louis presents Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater at the Touhill Performing Arts Center on April 15-16. PBS calls Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater “Chicago’s multifaceted dance jewel.” The Chicago Sun-Times labels the company’s performance as “a transcendent experience” and states “This world-class company and its roster of guest artists never cease to bedazzle its audiences with the variety, precision, beauty and heat of its performances. You would be hardpressed to find the breadth and range and sheer brilliance of dance.” La Raza adds, “The Ensemble Español proves that the language of art is universal.”

Under the artistic and executive leadership of Founder Dame Libby Komaiko, Artistic Director Irma

make it special. It is great that this art and cultural Hispanic institution spans 4 decades and continues to be thriving.

Some of the highlights of the year of celebration so far have been the Jacobs Pillow Festival and the first youth festival of children from companies of ages ranging 10-23 years all coming together to experience their own art forms (jazz, African dance, Indian dance and of course Spanish dance).

The closing of their 40th anniversary will be performing in Madrid in Spain.

They did not plan on going to Spain to present Spanish dance to Spain, but the invitation came at their 40th anniversary and decided that it most deserved to go.

Suárez Ruiz, and Executive Director Jorge Perez, Ensemble Español is internationally recognized as the premier center for Spanish dance, music and culture in America. In 1982, Dame Libby became the first American artist in history to be decorated with Spain’s highest honor “Lazo de Dama” (Ribbon of the Dame) by his Majesty Don Juan Carlos I, King of Spain for her artistic, cultural and educational work throughout the United States. In 2011, President Barack Obama congratulated Ensemble Español for their work in presenting its art form to communities around the world. The Ensemble Español has been in residence at Northeastern Illinois University since 1976.

The Ensemble appears in a broad range of television, opera, film, and symphonic formats, including with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and works in cultural and educational arts programs developed with state, national, and international government

agencies. The Ensemble Español has performed at every major theater and university in Chicago and Illinois, including the landmark legendary Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University, Harris Theater, Chicago Theater, Athenaeum Theater, DePaul’s Merle Reskin Theatre, North Shore Center for the Performing Arts and Symphony Center. They also perform in festivals including the St. Louis Dance Festival and the international Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival Inside / Outside Dance Series this past August in Becket, Massachusetts. The Ensemble has appeared throughout the United States, the Midwest, Puerto Rico & Hawaii and on four continents in the countries of Mexico, Costa Rica, Poland, Australia and China. An extraordinary repertoire of over 130 works (Spanish ballets, traditional folkloric suites and Flamenco dramas) exemplifies the Ensemble’s dedication to its cultural and artistic mission.

In 2011, President Barack Obama congratulated Ensemble Español for its work in presenting this art form to the many communities served locally, nationally and internationally.

We were fortunate enough to have interviews with the executive director Jorge Perez and one of the principle dancers JULIA HINOJOSA. Ensemble Español have had a busy year in celebrating their 40th anniversary starting in July of 2015 and is ending in the summer of 2016 in Spain. How ironic. I was very excited to also talk to JULIA HINOJOSA, Company Dancer, Teacher, Associate Artistic Director of the Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Youth Company, of MexicanPuerto Rican descent, is a native of Chicago. She began her Spanish dance studies with Dame Libby Komaiko in the Fall of 2000. In May 2004, Julia graduated with honors and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Dance minor from NEIU. In 2009 she graduated from Columbia College with her master’s degree in Arts Management from Columbia College.

Julia is also currently working as an instructor with the NEIU Community Children’s Dance program and on the faculty of the Ensemble Español’s community dance workshops. She also runs the After School Matters Spanish Dance Program.

When she attended North Eastern as an undergrad she took a class with Dame Libby . She walked into her class and fell in love with Spanish dance and has not left. Julia was not a dancer and this was her first formal dance class.

There was a talent there that she did not know about. It took a while to realize it but Dame Libby knew it before she did. Over the years she took a lot of classes and minored in dance. In 2003 Julia auditioned for Ensemble Español and apprenticed for one year and was promoted to company dancer.

I asked Julia if she can any give advice to young Latinos and she responded “don’t give up - just try. Really put yourself out there even if it seems farfetched. Don’t give up on your dream just try and if it doesn’t work out at least you tried and gave it your all and it will always be a learning experience. Put yourself out there and just go for it. “ We await the spectacular show of Ensemble Español in St. Louis this month. It will be spectacular.

Ensemble Español está celebrando su 40 aniversario. Aquí en San Luis estamos muy emocionados con esta actuación española Dance Theater. Tuvimos la

suerte de tener un entrevista exclusiva con el director ejecutivo Jorge Pérez y una de las principales bailarinas Julia Hinojosa.

Ensemble Español ha tenido un año muy activo en la celebración de su 40 aniversario que empezó en julio del 2015 y terminara en el verano de 2016 en España. La planificación del aniversario llevo de un año y medio a dos años para hacer de esta celebración inolvidable. Es excelente que este arte e institución cultural hispana se extienda por 4 décadas y sigua siendo próspera. Algunos de los aspectos más destacados del año de celebración hasta el momento han sido el Festival de Jacob Pillows y el primer festival de la juventud de los niños entre las edades 10-23 años, todos se unen para experimentar sus propias formas de arte (jazz, danza africana, danza de la India y por supuesto la danza española).

El cierre de su 40 aniversario se presentará en Madrid en España ya que recibieron una invitación especial al país.

Yo estaba muy emocionada de hablar también con Julia HINOJOSA, bailarina, profesora, directora artística asociada con el Ensemble Español, de origen mexicano y puertoriqueño, nacida en Chicago. Julia comenzó sus estudios de danza española con Dame Libby Komaiko en el otoño del 2000.

En mayo del 2004, Julia se graduó con honores y recibió una licenciatura en inglés y una especialización en danza de

la escuela NEIU. En el 2009 se graduó de la Universidad de Columbia con un título de maestría en Gestión de las Artes de la Universidad de Columbia.

Julia también está trabajando actualmente como instructora del Programa de Danza Infantil NEIU. Ella también dirige el Programa de Danza Española After School Matters.

Cuando asistió a la universidad de North Eastern como estudiante tomó una clase con Dame Libby. Ella entró en su clase y se enamoró de la danza española. Julia no era una bailarina y esta era su primera clase de baile formal. Fue ahí donde encontró un talento que ella no sabía que tenía. Se tomó un tiempo para darse cuenta de ello, pero Dame Libby lo sabía antes que ella. A través de los años ella tomó una gran cantidad de clases con especialización en danza. En el 2003 Julia hizo una prueba para Ensemble Español y aprendiz durante un año y fue ascendido a bailarina de la compañía.

Le pregunté a Julia si ella podría darle algún consejo a cualquier joven latino y ella respondió “no te rindas – sigue tratando. Realmente hazte disponible aunque la idea parezca descabellada.

No renuncies a tu sueño y si no funciona al menos lo intentaste y diste todo; siempre va a ser una experiencia de aprendizaje. Intentalo. “ Con entusiasmo esperamos ver el espectáculo de Ensemble Español en San Luis, y sabemos que va a ser sensacional!
