El domingo pasado no fue un día ordinario en The Pepper Lounge; fue una celebración extraordinaria que unió a familias y amigos en torno a una causa noble y emocionante. La atmósfera estaba cargada de anticipación y emoción, ya que nos preparamos para un evento que combinaba lo mejor del fútbol, la comida cubana y la diversión para todas las edades.

Last Sunday was no ordinary day at The Pepper Lounge; it was an extraordinary celebration that brought families and friends together around a noble and exciting cause. The atmosphere was filled with anticipation and excitement as we geared up for an event that combined the best of soccer, Cuban cuisine, and fun for all ages.

From early in the morning, the doors opened to welcome attendees and their families. The enticing aroma of Cuban food filled the air, while upbeat music created a festive and welcoming ambiance. It was evident that this day would be memorable not only for the delicious food and the excitement of the game, but also for the shared experiences and generosity towards an important cause.

Pero la diversión no terminó ahí. Una piñata infantil hizo las delicias de los más jóvenes, que se lanzaron alegremente a recolectar dulces y sorpresas. But the fun didn’t stop there. A children’s piñata delighted the youngsters, who gleefully scrambled to collect candies and surprises. Meanwhile, parents enjoyed the company of friends and family, sharing laughs and lively conversations in a relaxed and festive atmosphere.

Una gripe muy fuerte en la familia me llevó a recorrer todo Miami, junto a mi esposo, que es médico, en busca de medicinas. Si llamas, te dejan horas esperando. Ya indignados, mi Álvaro y yo fuimos personalmente a dos de las farmacias que no contestaban. Él hizo la fila, bastante larga, y le dijo a la muchacha que eran dos casos que no podían dormir por la tos, con fiebre alta, y una con bronquitis. Le dijo que le iba a dar la medicina, pero debía esperar media hora más.Y yo respondí: ¿cuándo se convirtió Miami en Cuba?

A very strong flu in the family led me to travel all over Miami, along with my husband, who is a doctor, in search of medicines. If you call, they leave you waiting for hours. Already indignant, my Álvaro and I personally went to two of the pharmacies that didn’t answer. He stood in line, quite long, and told the girl that two cases couldn’t sleep due to coughing, one with high fever and one with bronchitis. He said he would give him the medicine, but he had to wait another half hour. And I replied, when did Miami become Cuba?

The root cause of today’s troubles is a pair of Supreme Court decisions, Mayo v. Prometheus in 2012 and Alice v. CLS in 2014. In Mayo, the Court ruled that a diagnostic test was ineligible for patent protection because it relied on measuring unpatentable “laws of nature.” In Alice, the justices held that a particular strategy used by a bank for automatically mitigating risk was an “abstract idea” ineligible for patenting.

Fortunately, a ready solution exists.The bipartisan Patent Eligibility Restoration Act (PERA) would effectively overturn Mayo and Alice, restoring Congress’ patent statute. Under PERA, pure mathematical formulas, natural phenomena and basic mental processes would remain ineligible for patent protection because they fell outside the four categories Congress enacted.

WASHINGTON—Hoy, el Servicio de Ciudadanía e Inmigración de Estados Unidos (USCIS, por sus siglas en inglés) publicó una notificación en el Registro Federal que establece los procedimientos para que los palestinos protegidos por la Salida Forzosa Diferida (DED, por sus siglas en inglés)

WASHINGTON—Today, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) issued a notice in the Federal Register establishing procedures for Palestinians protected by

Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) to apply for Employment Authorization Documents valid until August 13, 2025.

The Federal Register notice describes who the eligible Palestinians are and acceptable

documentation, such as a passport or identification card from the Palestinian Authority. Please refer to the Federal Register notice for additional information on DED for Palestinians and instructions on how to apply for an EAD based on DED. USCIS adjudicates each EAD application fairly, humanely, and efficiently on a case-by-case basis to determine if they meet the standards and eligibility criteria. Over the past year, USCIS has reduced overall EAD processing times and streamlined adjudication processing. Additional information about DED-based EADs can be found on the USCIS website.
