I’m a big fan of BBC Two’s flagship music show ‘Laterwith Jools Holland’, where legendary musicians and brand new acts from around the world, all perform live in a club setting on multiple bandstands. Jools walks around from stage to stage with different musical genres at each stop. For lovers of music it’s the perfect format. I like to think the Mullum Music Festival takes from this ethos, where jazz meets country, classical and popular music go hand in hand, or folk can share a stage with hip hop. It’s with huge pleasure that in 2015 we present Canadian singer songwriter Ron Sexsmith, a favourite of Jools (check out online Ron and Jools playing the Charlie Rich tune Feel Like Goin Home). Other legendary artists coming to Mullum this year include New Zealand’s Trinity Roots and Cornerstone Roots, Ben Ottewell (the not so secret weapon of UK indie act Gomez), Germany’s internationally acclaimed pianist Hauschka and Robert Forster, best known for his work with songwriting partner Grant McLennan, with whom he co-founded The Go-Betweens. Harry Angus has again curated his beloved Village Vanguard venue, programming some of his favourite artists from the Melbourne club scene, as well as creating a new piano bar space featuring his long time musical collaborator Ollie McGill (Cat Empire).

As has been the case in the past the festival will embrace many aspects of the local community. This year Mullum S.E.E.D. (Mullumbimby Sustainability Education and Enterprise Development) presents a program of walks, talks, forums, workshops, and activities that encourage sustainable and good living with our environment. We are also partnering with CORUM (Community-Owned Renewable Energy Mullumbimby), once again presenting our popular Youth Mentorship program, supporting the Training Station and working closely with the Neighborhood Centre. This official festival program outlines many more wonderful organisations and projects that will underpin the amazing performance program for the four days of the festival. The Mullum Music Festival is a wrist banded event. Wearing the official festival wrist band gives you access to all the venues involved (depending on venue capacity). It is important to get to your favourite ‘must see’ gigs early, as it is inevitable some shows will fill up. For up to the minute venue and show information check out the festival website. It’s important if you do drive to the festival that you park legally and in sensible locations, see our map for parking options. Have a wonderful four days of music. Glenn Wright Festival Director

This event has been a great success since its beginnings in 2008, providing the region with a family friendly event supported at all levels within the community. The Mullum Music Festival is to be commended for its strong and mutually beneficial partnerships within the local community. An example is Mullum Music Festival’s partnership with COREM (Community-Owned Renewable Energy Mullumbimby), working together to raise funds to provide solar panels for the Old Drill Hall which is celebrating its centenary in 2016 and an important venue of the Mullum Music Festival. I can’t wait to be a part of this year’s Festival. Simon Richardson Mayor Byron Shire
This will be my second year as patron for the festival. Last year I had a hell of a good weekend. I got to present and collaborate with some of my favourite musicians, I led a parade, and I took the credit for a lot of other people’s hard work. The best part of the job, for me, is being able to connect artists who I know are awesome with an audience who I know will get it. This festival is unique. The town is as much a performer as any artist in the program. People know when to listen, and when to dance. It’s really so easy for magic to happen. Harry James Angus Festival Patron

HAT FITZ & CARA
HAUSCHKA (GER) Volker Bertelmann (HAUSCHKA) first began to study the piano when he was nine after an epiphany while attending a Chopin performance in his hometown near Düsseldorf, Germany. He is a composer, songwriter and experimental musician who brings an exciting new perspective to the prepared piano. After discovering the technique of resting pieces of paper or drumsticks on the strings of the instrument, he began exporing new ways to get sounds out of his Bechstein grand upright.
Stripped down to just voices, guitar and vintage drums, Hat Fitz & Cara embellish impeccable rootsy originals with powerful and soulful vocals reminiscent of a time once forgotten. With their latest album “Do Tell” having sat at No.1 in the Australian Blues & Roots charts for 3 months and entering the Amazon charts at No.17 in Europe- this dynamic duo are a unique combination that have skilfully combined their hill style country blues with old timey flavourings. They have been known to pack more energy, emotion and sheer musical exuberance into one song than most manage in a whole career. Their music comes straight from the heart with a sound that is full of inherent realism, making their live shows visually electric.

OH PEP! A week after winning the Folk Alliance Australia Youth Performer of the Year 2014 Oh Pep! took off on a five month journey to the U.S., Canada and Europe on the back of their second EP, II, produced by Shane Nicholson (ARIA Award Winner). Their overseas adventures culminated in a performance at the Americana Music Festival in Nashville, Tennessee. This February they return to the U.S., invited to showcase at the Folk Alliance International conference in Kansas City. The sometimes foot-stomping, somewhat heart breaking, multi-award-winning original contemporary folk by songwriters Olivia Hally and Pepita Emmerichs can be credited to the school of Cake, Bach, Wilco & John Hartford.

THE CACTUS CHANNEL It’s soul music, baby, but not as we know it. The backbeat and the handclaps are still there and the horns still sound. The bass bumps, the organ screams and the guitars still twang, but the singer has left the room. Everything is shades of blue. This is soul music for the after hours. For the solitary dancers and the lonely hearts.
rock n roll
The soundtrack to solitary headlights on a midnight highway. What to call it? Who cares. Can you dance to it? Just try not to. No one’s telling you to throw your hands up in the air, but no one would be surprised if you did. It’s dark here, so you can do your own thing.

Waste Management With the help of two local experts, Wren Mclean and Joanne Ho, we are creating a more advanced waste management model for our event, as in 2014 it became obvious there was much work to be done in this area.
Education At the festival this year Mullum SEED will be present ing some talks, walks, forums, cooking classes, and activities. See page 59-60 for complete program. COREM and the MMF Solar powering up Mullumbimby’s Iconic Drill Hall (see below).
Bike Riding Mullum is flat and a great town to ride your bike around.
The festival takes place in existing buildings and wherever possible we use existing infrastructure, hire local ly and support local business. It’s clever, and it works and shares the economic benefits of the festival around.

We appreciate your thoughtful disposal of rubbish and festival volunteers will be on hand to help in keeping Mullumbimby town clean and tidy.
