Reston Camps FAQs
Can I switch to a different camp?
Absolutely, as long as there is space available, and your child is within the camp’s age group. All requests must be in writing to the Camp Registrar (camp@reston.org).
What is your cancellation policy?
All cancellations must be in writing to the Camp Registrar (camp@ reston.org). Cancellations at any time prior to the session start will forfeit the $75 deposit ($45 for half-day Nature Camps). Cancellations less than 10 days before the session start will forfeit half the camp fees. No-shows will be charged the full fee. In the event you need to cancel, we will work with you to move you to another open, age-appropriate camp session prior to forfeiting your deposit. There is no refund for behavior-related problems. Campers who cancel or leave camp on the advice of the medical personnel will receive a prorated refund. A physician’s note is required.
What makes Reston Camps special?
We have been in operation for 49 years. We hire camp staff with a passion for working, and playing, with children. All staff are CPR/ AED/first aid certified, have passed criminal background checks, a Central Registry Check, fingerprinting and have had pre-camp training in child abuse, positive behavior management, camp safety and ongoing training in camp programming.
Do you have a policy regarding visitors to camp?
The safety of our campers and staff, is our #1 priority. For this reason, any visitors must be preapproved by the Camp Director or Recreation Manager.
What if my child has a disability?
Reston Camps welcomes campers with disabilities. In order to best accommodate your child, please email the Recreation Manager (Katherine Caffrey) at kcaffrey@reston.org so we can schedule a time to meet and discuss your child’s needs.
Does my child go swimming during camp?
Campers at Junior Day Camp, Day Camp, Sportsters, Teen Camp, Tennis Camp, Art Camp, Camp on Wheels, Adventure Camp, Watercraft Camp and CIT will visit pools and will be assigned a colorcoded swim level wristband while in the pool area so that counselors and lifeguards can appropriately supervise them. Water Competency Test (swim test) will be conducted on the first day that your camper is scheduled for swimming.
When are camp payments due?
Payment for each camp session is due two weeks PRIOR TO THE START of that session. Campers will not be allowed to attend a session, and parents will be called to pick up their child, until full payment is made. Special circumstances must be approved through the Camp Registrar.
Does my child need a camp shirt?
Only campers attending Junior Day Camp, Day Camp, Sportsters, Adventure Camp and CITs must wear a Reston Camps camp shirt. Shirts can be purchased prior to the first day of camp at our Member Services office. Past Reston Camps shirts may be worn. We highly suggest purchasing multiple shirts so that you don’t have to wash shirts each night.
I have questions about camp, who do I contact?
The Parent Handbook contains the answers to a majority of questions parents ask. If you are unable to find a specific answer, please reach out to the Camp Registrar at camp@reston.org or 703.435.6551.
Do you still have camp during inclement weather?
Yes. All camp locations have inclement weather policies and Emergency Action Plans. Indoor locations are available for those camps based outdoors. Please know that drop off and pickup will always be at the base camp location, even in inclement weather. We still hold camp on code red days, but we increase time in the shade, offer additional water breaks, pool time and indoor programming, when available. We do not prorate days not attended due to weather.
Will there be field trips this summer?
Occasionally, campers may have an opportunity to visit a field trip location off-site. Parents will be notified ahead of time, and provided with a permission slip.
Do you offer extended care or transportation?
Unfortunately, we no longer offer Extended Care or Transportation; however, we do offer some ½ day camps for our younger children.

HAPPY CAMPERS & HAPPY PARENTS!
Thank you so much for offering such member-focused flexibility when it comes to camp registration and cancellations.
My son was nervous about whether or not he would like the Junior Day Camp (as he did not like being in the sun all day), and the JDC Director put both me and my son at ease. They have been 100% responsive to my questions via phone or even after camp hours texts, and my son absolutely enjoys them. I truly appreciate the professionalism, care, and consistency.
I love that most of the information was automatically populated and that documentation submitted previously is handled by the staff. Makes it so easy for returning families! (comment regarding CampDoc)
I wanted to let you know my son has been enjoying the camp a lot!!! He is very happy and always excited to go to camp. When I pick him up and ask how his day was, he says - “he has a very very very best day” :) As a parent, It is really nice to hear that from your child.

Volunteer Reston (VR) housed under the Reston Association, is a network of community members who come together to complete various projects to improve our surroundings and bring the Reston community together.
CORPORATE DAY OF SERVICE
VR Corporate Volunteer Program offers expertise in community service to corporations by creating customized, hands-on group volunteer projects that complement team building, leadership development, and philanthropy initiatives. Through this program, Reston Association staff will fully develop and coordinate all aspects of your company’s community service volunteer project.
NEED SERVICE HOURS FOR SCHOOL?
Many students in Reston and the surrounding area are required to perform a specific number of community service hours for their course or school requirements. Volunteer Reston is a great way to fulfill these hours. Students may be able to finish their service hours by handling shifts at community events, environmental projects, monthly service projects and community cleanups.
Contact us to get involved by sharing your talents and skills with others; we can always use a helping hand
at our community events, environmental projects and events at the Nature Center. We understand that people have different availabilities, so you can serve in an ongoing position or just serve at a onetime event.
ENVIRONMENTAL OPPORTUNITIES
Reston Association provides environmental education and stewardship opportunities to volunteers who want to help restore and enhance our community.

Stream Monitoring Program Spring: March through May, various locations.
If interested, join our volunteer monitor email distribution list to receive notices of upcoming monitoring dates. Email cdickens@reston.org with the message “add me to the stream monitors list” to begin receiving emails.
RA welcomes new volunteers to assist with stream monitoring at several locations throughout Reston. Get involved with a small team during all seasons to collect data and identify insects to assess the health of Reston’s streams or attend a one-time stream monitoring workshop to learn about the program. Not only do you get to learn about Reston’s streams, but it also provides an opportunity to make new friends. Our program utilizes the Virginia Save Our Streams (VA SOS) method of
assessing the water quality in a stream. Based on the type and diversity of aquatic insects found in the stream, you will be able to assess the ecological conditions of the streams. This is known as biological monitoring and is recognized nationally as a reliable indicator of water quality.

Habitat Heroes Workdays
Our native trees, ferns and wildflowers are under attack by invasive plants like English ivy, oriental bittersweet and burning bush. These fastgrowing, aggressive plants escape from people’s yards and threaten local ecosystems, taking away vital food and habitat from already stressed wildlife populations.
For All Workdays: RA will train volunteers on how to use tools. Volunteers must preregister for these workdays.
All ages are welcome. Children under 13 must be accompanied by a responsible adult during their volunteer service.

Rolling Out the Red Carpet!
At Tall Oaks, our residents are the celebrities. And to welcome them to their new home in style, we are rolling out the red carpet – literally! Moving into a new home can be a big adjustment, so it’s important to make sure our new neighbors feel welcomed and loved from day one.
Resident Ambassadors Margaret Macedonia and Jim Fowler prepare to welcome the newest addition to the Tall Oaks family.
At left, Rodolfo O’Shea receives a warm greeting from Director of Activities Adina Cimpean. Below, Jean Hardison smiles on the red carpet on move-in day.
