INTRODUCTION Welcome to the 2023 SDEA Design and Display Directory where we have created an exciting and eclectic collection of divine retail interiors for your pleasure. This year’s latest and greatest stores show true innovation; each and every one has its own unique and inspirational retail design concept. Starting at Battersea Power Station where a string of luxury global brands line the magnificent malls. We look at Theory, a US fashion retailer new to the UK launching a stunning outlet. Swiss Army Knife brand, Victorinox returns to London with a sensational store, whilst Keune debuts a theatrically-led environment in another of London’s historic buildings. Mr Jones Watches lands its first visually stimulating shop on an unsuspecting Neal Street in London; crisp and clean it’s totally unique just like the product, and Oh So Yum hits new heights with its sweet treats in Bradford, a really bold concept. US streetwear brand Ksubi debuts with a decadent, alternative showroom on Carnaby Street. Also in London, Hydrafacial turns its online business into bricks and mortar with a powerful, experience-led design that influencers are going to love. Zuercher Kantonalbank in Switzerland shows us how contemporary banking could look with its sophisticated and relaxed interior. Finally, Australian furniture maker, King launches its first UK flagship right at the heart of London’s premium homeware retail district with a fabulous store.

PROJECT:
BATTERSEA POWER STATION, LONDON

Interior Turbine Hall John Sturrock Interior Turbine Hall John Sturrock Exterior Control Room B John Sturrock Exterior Charlie Round Turner
2
Work began in 2013 on the 80th anniversary of this iconic power house. It has taken the developers eight long years to painstakingly restore and renovate the empty shell of South London’s former power station into a state of the art retail and leisure destination. For nearly four decades Battersea Power Station had lain empty and disregarded, a highlight of most Londoners’ commute into and out of the city. Having been born, raised and lived in South London for much of my adult life, I am delighted to see this old workhorse serving its local community once more. It has to be one of the best, if not the best mixed use retail development to date. Not least because the Grade II listed building has been fully replenished in all its former glory. Unbelievably, the construction team completely dismantled the four chimneys before rebuilding each one in the exact same method and with the same combination of concrete and steel reinforcement. They were even painted to match the original colour. This is clearly a labour of love and one which comprises many other factors. In addition to the historic building, the developers created a new pedestrianised high street, Electric Boulevard that links Battersea with its very own, brand new tube station – the northern line was extended so that it is now within easy reach of central London (just 15 minutes). In fact, the 42 acre site has: 25,000 people living and working onsite within newly formed retail, leisure, office and culture, 250 shops, a 24,000 square feet food hall, 9 acres of public space, 6 acres of public park, 450 metres of river frontage, and 20,000 new jobs were established. The entire project is outstanding; the modern architecture and landscaping that surround the monolith create a shining centrepiece of a new town centre for London. Its many attributes don’t stop here, because in addition to the chimney restoration, inside the walls of this defining landmark the two Turbine Halls, Control Rooms and Boiler House have also been equally lovingly revamped. The retail stores are all based within the now three storey turbine halls which have been sympathetically renovated in a refined industrial style that both complements Battersea’s heritage and acknowledges our modern love affair with contemporary design. These magnificent structures reveal incredible height and a raw, energised vibe. Within both halls a series of bridges, walkways and escalators leading up from the ground floor have been finished with dark, angular metalwork and connect the various retail outlets on different levels. Inside Turbine Hall B, the 1950s extension concrete flooring with ceramic tile insets, exposed steel girders and cranes emphasise its industrial qualities and brutalist design. The enclosed roof has been illuminated with coloured lighting for added drama. Whilst in Hall A, original herringbone parquet flooring and a decorative skylight complete with struts and straps which stretches the entire length of the hall, play homage to its 1930s Art Deco era. The glass roof allows natural light to permeate the
4 interior adding a sense of tranquillity to the polished urban look. The turbine halls once responsible for powering London’s electric are now oiling the wheels of its retail. Battersea has an unsurprisingly impressive line-up of global players that adorn its manicured malls: Breitling, Calvin Klein, Jo Malone, Kiehls, L’Occitane, Ralph Lauren, Rayban, Tommy Hilfiger and Watches of Switzerland to name but a few. All don their most glamorous and glitzy products and environments for the public’s perusal. Here, in this once derelict site lies the crème de la crème of retail. The dining offer is equally sublime. Located within the old Boiler House, it brings an eclectic mix of worldwide cuisine to an excited and insatiable audience. Having also been thoughtfully revitalised complete with all its original features, the Boiler House is so vast that St Paul’s cathedral would fit within it. The 24,000 square foot eatery encompasses Clean Kitchen Club, Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen, Le Bab, Poke House, Where the Pancakes Are and many more tasty treats. In addition, the former Control Rooms have been sympathetically restored and retain all their stainless steel control panels and switch dials that managed the flow of electricity. Today, Control Room A is a cool events space loaded with historical interest and B has been converted into a trendy bar. Customers can look out over the retail fair of the Turbine Hall whilst sipping a Battersea Power Station inspired cocktail and being fully immersed in the nostalgic ambience. Finally, your shopping trip would not be complete without a glass elevator ride inside one of the chimneys - the London skyline on view at the top is well worth the effort. Battersea Power Station Development Company has delivered an unbeatable retail extravaganza that fuses together the old and the new. In doing so, it has secured the survival of one of the UKs best loved landmarks, its 80 year history and a little pocket of the city that lies south of the Thames.
PROJECT:
THEORY, LONDON
2022 was a great year for this innovative US fashion label. Launching not one but two incredible stores for the first time in the UK. The cavernous, listed building on Regent Street permitted the clothing brand a vast amount of creative freedom for its phenomenal debut store. Whilst Battersea Power Station presented the opportunity to fully embrace its contemporary values. It is here that we focus our attention. Though new to the UK, Theory appears familiar. I say that not to underestimate the retail design or merchandise for both are fabulous. This brand feels like it belongs and has always resided here. The Battersea outlet, though smaller than Regent Street, is exquisitely decorated and fitted out. The layering concept developed for the inaugural flagship has been carried through to the store, minus the voluptuously sculpted, curvaceous
environment of course. In its place is a smart, sleek and flowing fitout. The interior materials palette combines different textures to depict tactility, variation and warmth in a subtle and muted effect. To achieve the perfect ambiance the walls, floors and ceilings have been treated with hand crafted plaster alongside natural materials including cork, timber, limestone, brickwork and soft velvet touches. As you would expect the fixtures and fittings are all bespoke and designed to convey a delicate balance between lightweight and solidity. They are artfully rounded and consist of blackened bronze metalwork, Lucite tops and smooth stone bases. This store oozes perfection. The brand’s relaxed colour palette has also been applied. Neutral shades have been enriched with camel, beige and caramel hues, plus a tranquil pistachio in the fitting room area. Bringing nature instore was of paramount importance and potted plants are dotted through the space.
This stylish store also benefits from Battersea’s own strong brand identity; the industrial dark metal and glass storefront adds a dramatic flair to the classic interior. The double height windows, as well as flooding the inside with clarity and light, create a seamless transition from the main mall. On entering this visual delight your attention is drawn to the light feature at the heart of the store. An enormous circular disk is suspended overhead and draws you into the sales floor. On either side display tables laden with neatly folded garments are layered both in colour and height and lead your eye to the freestanding shelving racks beyond. In fact, all the shopfittings and display equipment in this outlet are freestanding and can quickly and easily accommodate fresh displays and new ranges. Freestanding hanging rails, which showcase further refined items, are positioned beyond the initial display tables creating another layer and breaking up the space. They entice you through to the next section, where once
again the layering is repeated. And then, the whole set is repeated again until you finally reach the rear of the store, where a large, circular cork inset underfoot captures your attention and provides a natural break from the shopping experience. Here, you can relax on the velvet tub chairs before venturing up the stairs to the fitting rooms, or making your final purchase at the elliptical sales desk that is located immediately behind the lounge. The fitting rooms, so often an afterthought in retail, envelope you into the folds of their luscious, mellow softness – plush carpet, luxury curtains, soft lighting abound. Architecture studio, Sybarite worked with Theory to achieve this remarkable concept that aptly conveys the brand’s three pillars of strength – perfect fit, premium fabrics and timeless style. A true latest and greatest retail store!

KSUBI, LONDON
PROJECT:
Small yet perfectly formed, this coveted fashion brand’s evocative debut UK store, sited on the infamous Carnaby Street in the heart of Soho, is set to take the London music and art scene by storm. Ksubi has become something of a cult streetwear brand in the US, as well as at home in its Australian birthplace and is now set to charm London’s music and art crowd with the opening of their new store. The new European flagship oozes luxury, everything about it is unique, yet its raw, industrial vibes are clearly evident in the makeup of this fabulous fitout. From the
exposed concrete ceiling, its pipes, ducts, brackets and overhead lighting tracks to the concrete underfoot and on the walls, this store takes its inspiration straight from the street. These urban qualities are fused with the rich red, Rosso Lavanto Stone of the inlaid cash desk, the full height mirrored wall and the stylish, lacquered steel shelving wall to create a polished, upmarket interior that every edgy celebrity will devour. Ksubi itself is a contradiction of styles where perfection and imperfection meet and hence the significance of the
20 @SHOPANDDISPLAY Photographers: Louise Melchior and Brinkworth
From the outset the store is deliberately pared down; the fascia panel is left blank with very little in the way of signage and only the Ksubi cross logo sprayed directly onto the windows. The very essence of this brand clearly evident in its lack of lustre, yet at the same time adeptly symbolising the spirit of rebellion and quest for perfection. As is apparent from the sheer scale of the neatly stacked, floor to ceiling shelving that spans the whole perimeter wall, the brand is ensconced in denim and streetwear clothing. Also on the ground level, sizeable glass topped, grey granite display plinths showcase the full range of branded accessories. Further clothing is displayed in the windows on custom-built raw rails that are suspended between pillars and run the length of the two store fronts - Ksubi is sited on a corner. The VIP area downstairs has a sultry, moody ambiance with dark red textured rendered walls and a lengthy, wrap around sofa positioned against a Rosso Levanto clad alcove. The area serves as an exclusive private shopping space, created to host Ksubi’s VIP customers, as well as customer personalisation workshops. Upstairs, you will find the fitting rooms covered in flyposters, true to Ksubi’s commitment to individuality. In true Ksubi fashion, the rebellious retailer collaborated with a local free-thinking ‘self pro-claimed con artist’, Slawn and developed a limited-edition clothing range, as well as a bold, cartoonish sculpture that features the Ksubi cross logo. The brand is a big promoter of creative individuality and is committed to championing independent individuals. As such, this streetwear enigma has captured the imagination of the American rap scene and developed a huge fan base, something it envisages happening in London too. The innovative store was devised specifically for the London market in conjunction with retail design specialists, Brinkworth, and is the perfect addition to its contemporary neighbours.

PROJECT:
VICTORINOX, LONDON
This iconic Swiss brand is celebrating its 125th anniversary and has returned to London with a phenomenal flagship, that will almost certainly seal its success with future generations of enthusiasts. The flagship store on Oxford Street is a feast for the senses, with its clean, symmetrical façade standing tall among fashion heavyweights. Its simplicity and symmetry aptly conveying the quality and longevity of this manufacturer. The double-height windows and door invite you in for a closer look, leading you on a journey of discovery through the brand’s extensive range of products. As you enter, you’re greeted by a minimalist, yet bold interior that showcases the brand’s commitment to quality and longevity. The interior being uncluttered and ordered, with merchandise presented on equally minimalist fixtures and fittings. The store is understated and elegant showcasing the full product range on offer. Naturally, there is no denying the importance of the infamous pocket knife to the brand’s success, but nowadays there is much more to Victorinox. Whether you are perusing the luggage, perfume, watches, cutlery or knives, you will marvel at the exquisite displays, the attention to detail and revel in the sleek interior. Product presentation is faultless and as such, elevates the items to art status. There is so much detail in this astonishing new fitout, but it is presented in a logical, methodical and clinical fashion. Much like the pocket knives themselves, your vision is directed to the key features within a single display, or even individual section. Natural, marble flooring reinforces the quality inherent in this distinguished brand and allows the products to shine. Strong, graphic imagery interrupts the muted tones of the calm interior and adds a sense of drama. The red logo panel at the rear of the lower floor draws your eye across the store, as does the enormous, dynamic wall graphic to your left as you enter the shop. Digital screens enhance the buying process and create
a seamless shopping experience. Exposed ceiling ducts, pipes and overhead track lighting are a further nod to Victorinox’s industrial roots. The ground floor contains a range of apparel including travel gear, watches and fragrance displayed on stylish perimeter shelving. A combination of brushed stainless steel and natural birch link the brand to both its industrial roots and its birth place, surrounded by nature. The subtle tones ensure the merchandise is the hero in this prestigious environment. Midway along the righthand wall a steel and glass corkscrew staircase creates a feature as it winds its way up to the first floor. It appears to climb ever higher thanks to a mirror positioned on the ceiling directly above. Once upstairs, you are fully immersed in the very essence of the brand: the knives. Merchandised in wall mounted, glass showcases, every tool is carefully displayed and precisely annotated. The knives are showcased at the front of the upper level, general cutlery knives are displayed at the rear. Furthermore, a customisation bench takes pride of place at the centre of the first floor, where you can personalise and assemble your very own Swiss Army Knife. Choose the style, size, colour of the casing and engraving. Equipped with pristine clamps, vices, computer technology, and stools to perch on, you can while away the time designing your unique purchase. From this vantage point you have the benefit of the full height windows and can watch the world go by beneath you. A fitting nod to the brand’s Swiss heritage, which directly links the showroom to its exterior surroundings and the natural world. Designed by the talented team at Dalziel and Pow, the store seamlessly blends modernism, minimalism, and industrialism, embodying Swiss precision engineering and innovation. HYDR AFACIAL, LONDON
24 @SHOPANDDISPLAY
Hydrafacial, the youthful B2B beauty brand, has landed in London with a bang! The company has opened a state-of-theart flagship store in Portman Square that offers a fully immersive brand experience. This is a social media savvy company and its new store is out of this world; perfect for all those Instagram-worthy, as every inch is designed with social media in mind. With next to no product on view, this vibrant venue provides customers with a fully immersive brand experience. It is bold and beautiful, colourful and playful; each area is designated to a particular purpose. This beauty icon is most certainly a trailblazer. Hydrafacial specialises in a 3-step cleansing routine, nothing radical here except their patented technology; the Vortex Fusion delivery system that cleanses, exfoliates, extracts and hydrates in, yes, you’ve guessed it, 3 easy steps. It promises you the best skin of your life and they intend to spread the word.
From the outside the fully glazed storefront reveals the glowing, theatrical interior. As you enter you are greeted by a large, circular, pure white counter. There is no product on display. Overhead, a dramatic light feature dominates your attention having multicoloured lampshades suspended from a giant circular disk. The reception area doubles as a bar for hosting events in the evenings, including space for a DJ. The spacious showroom is open plan and naturally encourages roaming; multiple sets have been created with individual promotional activities in mind. The Vloggers area has a bank of smart black sofas and coffee tables grouped together and specifically designed for meetings. The influencers section is clad entirely in electric blue, is raised on a platform and has a curved roof structure to absorb sound and provide some privacy. The setup includes an Instagram pull out wall with custom-made backdrops. There are also VIP treatment rooms and a neon archway that is activated by movement.
The aim is to draw the media in and provide a sensational setting for online posts. And, here is the really controversial bit – customers can enjoy their first Hydrafacial treatment for free. The conviction in their product is so strong they allow customers to try the experience in order to gain glowing posts and loyal customers. It seems to be working! The London outlet encompasses retail, cosmetic treatment, office workspace, as well as an event space for brand events, masterclasses and expert-led forums with doctors, facialists and makeup artists. It really is a clever concept. So Visualise, the design agency behind this innovative concept, has developed a highly attractive hybrid concept. The company is set to roll out this model to countries worldwide and help Hydrafacial achieve its goal of world beauty domination.

OH SO YUM, BRADFORD This new flagship is a feast for the senses, with its vibrant and energetic fusion of candy colours that can brighten up even the dullest winter day or fully embrace summer sunshine. Oh So Yum has launched a smart, fun loving landmark outlet in the centre of Bradford that also marks the start of a new brand identity for this popular sweet treat. You may remember Harpreet Kaur, the determined entrepreneur who won series 14 of the TV hit show, the Apprentice. Her dreams have finally become reality with this sublime store. Harpreet and sister, Guvinda already own two successful dessert parlours in Yorkshire (Leeds and Huddersfield). This new outlet, funded through her partnership with Lord Sugar, marks a complete rebranding and the launch of an online offering. With permission from the local council, the exterior, including the brickwork, has been painted pink, with a purple banner displaying the white logo. Additional advertising banners feature on the site’s upper floors for maximum visibility. The interior is equally stunning, with pink walls, purple ceiling, and a lavender floor. Key areas are further highlighted with mint green accents. In spite of its boldness, the environment is sleek and minimal. The counter, which is located directly opposite the entrance and clearly visible, is clad in pink tongue and groove panelling and topped with modern, glass showcases which display the delicious desserts and delectable ice creams. The counter top is simply white with a sparkle.
28 – FOLLOW US ON TWITTER @SHOPANDDISPLAY
Its founder has even developed a range of branded merchandise to further raise awareness and build brand loyalty. Customers can purchase mugs, hoodies, aprons, tote bags, moneyboxes, cups, stickers and notebooks instore or online. Examples of the range are displayed on small, recessed, mint green shelves, which are situated to the right of the counter and noticeable whilst waiting to order or collect. The main seating area is open plan and consists of a mixture of café style chairs and faux leather, booth style benches – all candyfloss pink. The tables are a combination of small rounds to seat two and larger oblongs for groups of four or more; all table tops are white and have a central pillar rather than legs – once again in keeping with the informal café style.
The eatery is exceptionally bright thanks to the natural light flooding in through the large, glazed shopfront. Numerous spotlights are inset across the ceiling for maximum dazzle and enormous, circular, halo chandeliers are suspended above seating areas and bring a touch of glamour and magic to the ambiance. At the rear of the space a staircase leads to the headquarters and packaging centre for online sales. Here, the walls and banisters are also pure pink and adhere to the corporate branding. Designed by Pheonix Wharf in collaboration with Harpreet, this Willy Wonka-inspired concept is poised to take the UK by storm and bring a slice of heaven to your doorstep with online delivery.

PROJECT: MR JONES WATCHES, LONDON Step inside Mr Jones Watches, and you’ll be transported into a world of creativity and innovation. This flamboyant flagship store perfectly showcases the exquisite, one-of-akind timepieces created by this successful online horologist who has now entered the world of bricks and mortar. Mr Jones Watches truly embodies imagination and inventiveness. Its watches are stunning; each one an artistic masterpiece that is so much more than a functional item. The new Neal Street showroom is suitably quirky and distinctive to mirror the art and design heritage of these unique time pieces. The brand’s philosophy revolves around collaboration and since 2007 it has partnered with over 50 artists and designers. This has
resulted in a diverse and unique collection of products. The watches are made using a layered approach, where the watch face is pad printed with one colour at a time. The timekeeping mechanism is often integrated into the design, for example, using a character’s eyes, legs, or teeth. It was crucial for the new shop to showcase the full range of watches, a customization area for bespoke straps, illustrations, and engravings, and also have room for apparel, presented in an innovative and engaging way. Just like the watches, the store is constructed from a series of layers to create a striking interior. The internal ceiling and walls feature lime green ply panels that are layered from the front of the store to the rear creating an inspired tunnel. On the right perimeter wall, individual pieces are displayed within each of the recesses that have been formed between the plywood layers. The watches are behind a stylised magnifier, so that you can get up close and personal with the individual products and appreciate the intricacies of the illustrations, as well as their workings. QR codes below each timepiece invite you to delve into the story, design, and process behind each piece.
Director and Founder, Crispin Jones, partnered with Seen Studios to bring this lavish, fun environment to life. It personifies the unique spirit of this London-based watchmaker and sets the stage for a truly memorable shopping experience. With its distinctive, one-of-a-kind watches and imaginative store design, Mr Jones Watches is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking something truly special.
Sleek, natural plywood cupboards for storing stock have been incorporated into the concept and line the wall below the watch displays. The T-shirt range is displayed underneath the personalisation station on the opposite wall. At the end of the green ply tunnel an enormous watch face is displayed on the rear wall epitomising the brand’s signature design. This can be changed to display key product lines or new styles. KEUNE, LONDON
PROJECT:
A real sense of experience lies within this new flagship residing within the formidable old post office building in Holborn. The awe-inspiring interior mirrors the glamour and excitement of this iconic hair styling brand. It is much more than a sensational salon; it lives and breathes effortless style and quality. The new showroom incorporates cutting, styling, colouring, a café and bakery, a 1920s themed barbers, an office and events space, as well as a training academy. It is the house of Keune in every sense. There is even a living wall on the ground floor behind the cutting stations to showcase the brands desire to use natural and sustainable materials, and offer some health benefits too. The plant wall provides a striking visual contrast to the incredible, dramatic ceiling feature that embraces multiple-coloured ribbons and lights, and brings an enormous amount of energy to this sophisticated environment.
Natural light floods the space through the floor to ceiling windows whilst the double height construction and raw architecture add drama. As you enter the store you come immediately face to face with the extraordinary hanging sculpture from which the entire salon radiates outwards and upwards. The open plan design follows the brand’s relaxed and inclusive ethos allowing customers access to all areas as they flow easily through the space. Right below the chandelier is the Consultation Bar – the hub of the store – where staff gather together with customers, discuss colour and get mixing. Colour is at the heart of the Keune brand and so it was imperative that it was the focal point of the design. Behind this lie the cutting stations and the moss clad wall that adds depth and interest, not to mention its green credentials, to the theatrical ambiance. The hair wash area lies beyond here and is slightly elevated to differentiate

this part of the process and encourage relaxation by way of a softer, muted palette. The hair treatment sector has been given the VIP touch. It has a subdued atmosphere that is complimented by neutral tones and plush, comfy chairs in keeping with a luxury spa.
Finally on the ground floor, there is space for customers to socialise and relax away from the outside world within the Comptoir Gourmand café and bakery that has been carved out of the most remarkable feature wall. The history wall is covered in giant size, original, grainy, black and white images of the founder and brand heritage to shine a light on 100 years of history. Upstairs on the mezzanine level, there is a further nod to the brand’s roots with a fully functioning, twenties styled barbers offering haircuts, beard trims and wet shaves. There is also flexible office and event space, and a kitchen, which will all soon be filled with customers, DJs, coffee baristas, influencers and brand ambassadors.
If you stand at the store’s centre and turn to face the entrance you will find the main sales area. Large, freestanding shelving units have been placed within the enormous windows and stock the full range of haircare products. The showcases

ZUERCHER KANTONALBANK, WINTERTHUR
Innovation lies at the heart of this Swiss stalwart and its new flagship in Winterthur has the look and feel of an Apple outlet coupled with a revolutionary approach to bank retailing. Whilst all across the globe banks are closing their doors to the public and opting for an almost entirely online presence – which has to be said does have certain benefits – in Switzerland we find one of their 4 largest financial institutions doing the complete opposite. Zuercher Kantonalbank has launched what can only be described as ‘the store of the future’ with the sole intention of increasing its presence on the high street. The design is sleek
and modern yet extremely inviting; it has an open plan layout. Nothing so radical or theatrical in its presentation as our previous store reviews, yet the gallery quality of the interior entices customers instore whilst its relaxed ambiance encourages them to dwell and spend time fuelling their aims and ambitions. The cutting edge financier maintains a holistic approach engaging with its clients and supporting them on their journey through life; they aim to instil a sense of excitement for customers’ future prospects, which is where they win every time. In 2020 a test and learn pilot branch was opened in a high footfall area at Stettback Station with the ultimate goal of understanding ‘the wants and needs’ of the millennial consumer in order to create a relevant brand proposition. As we have seen recently in mainstream retail, experience stores lead the way and banking is no different – the customer is still the same being driven by experience rather than sales. In financial terms this involved moving from a purely transactional space to a versatile experience for personal progress and financial wellbeing. This meant bringing together the attributes of physical, digital and human experience in the one place. The result is a suave and sophisticated interior that is divided up into various areas with seating to accommodate group seminars, individual explorations, one to one meetings and an inhouse café. The entire showroom is finished in natural tones with a mixture of handcrafted white and
natural wood furniture. Floor to ceiling windows allow daylight to flood into the store and large, globe pendant lights add a softer, homely feel. A warm, wood panelled ceiling and rich marble floor add depth to the environment. The coffee bar resides in the window, near to the entrance. It offers a broad selection of coffee and cakes served by its very own barista. Stylish bar stools are located around the counter, where you can sit and wait, or mull over an idea. A long, counter is placed on the other side of the entrance also within the window and is laden with a plethora of information - customers are encouraged to browse the displays. Another large, interactive table with a clever touchscreen facility is positioned at the centre of the store. This is where clients come together with banking staff to explore the monetary possibilities available to them to realise their dreams and aspirations. At the edge of the main floorspace, small pod like units have been created to accommodate one to one meetings. Each elliptical pod is screened off using corrugated white panels and features a simple table and two chairs. In addition, there is a designated forum to host events on topical issues such as housing, finance, careers, as well as IT workshops and an entertaining programme targeted specifically at families and children. Designers, Dalziel and Pow has worked with Zuercher Kantonalbank to create a true brand experience that delivers on every level and will differentiate this banker from its competition.

KING, LONDON
Where else would a luxury Australian furniture maker launch its debut UK store than Tottenham Court Road, London’s renowned shopping street. It is their first venture into Europe and the new flagship having 8,729 square feet makes it a sizeable investment allowing King to showcase its innovative furniture collection to the max. The homewear brand is much loved by Australians and famed for its range of modular sofas designed with a steel frame and postureflex seating system (similar to that found in luxury European cars) that offer both comfort and style. Spread out over two floors this supreme showroom has been designed to evoke the nostalgia of the home, as well as illustrate the relaxed Australian lifestyle through its minimal open plan execution. The entire building has been stripped back; partition walls were removed to increase the overall spacious feel and every piece of trunking, beams, services, junctions and other have been hidden from view to create a seamless appearance. The new space has great height, soft lighting, neutral colours and a slate grey palette that together convey a sophisticated, aspirational interior. Subtle shifts in hue and texture take you on a journey through this prestigious environment.
The exterior is a statement in itself. Bold yet simple, the existing storefront has been painted black with simply ‘King’ in white above the entrance doors. As you step inside you are transported into a serene store that has the appearance of a luxury penthouse apartment. The barrierless concept allows your eye to wander across the entire ground floor and entices you to explore the full offer. The atmosphere is both inviting and inspiring. There is a second level which is similarly designed. Furniture is displayed in room sets with enormous neutral toned rugs that help delineate the sets; significant artworks grace the walls and enhance the ambiance. Key areas are divided using wooden slatted panels or grained wooden
cabinetry. Towards the rear of the store, an exquisite marble consultancy desk, where the product customisation details are discussed in depth and sales are secured creates an interesting feature. Large swathes of fabric are displayed hung from the walls behind the counter and the walls and floor are clad in marble. When paired with contrasting brown leather seats the effect is incredibly indulgent and very striking. King is a very classy affair having a Zen like quality. It easily rivals the stiff competition that this iconic street attracts. Retail design specialists, Barber has delivered a fitting and elegant flagship for this cool, contemporary Australian homewear brand. A beautifully crafted retail store design.

We find out what the retail industry is doing to be more sustainable in 2023 and beyond.

Dobbies Garden Centres Marcus Eyles, Horticultural Director at Dobbies Garden Centres, commented: “At Dobbies, we recognise that the retail sector must take a proactive and innovative approach when it comes to introducing green initiatives. With sustainability at our core, we are firmly committed to educating our customers and will continue working on environmentally-friendly solutions in the years ahead. In 2023, Dobbies will continue building on the progress made last year, which included the launch of our partnership with elho to provide plastic plant pot recycling bins across 69 of our stores, as well as expanding our compost packaging recycling scheme following a successful trial. We were also extremely proud to have picked up the RHS Sustainable Garden

Product of the Year Award for our John Innes peat-free compost range. In early 2023, Swindon will be the first Dobbies store to have electric vehicle (EV) chargers installed, which comes as part of our partnership with sustainable energy pioneer and charge point operator, GRIDSERVE. This partnership will roll out across the UK during the year, and will provide Dobbies’ customers, commuters, and local residents easy access to affordable and fast EV charging. We are very proud to be the first garden centre retailer to work with this forward-thinking company and look forward to welcoming electric vehicle drivers as we roll out this service throughout 2023. Dobbies has also made a commitment this year to stop

the sale of artificial grass. We believe it’s important for nature to have a home in our gardens and we currently stock a wide range of wildflower seeds and plants for pollinators. In spring, we will add wildflower turf to our range which contains carefully selected native and naturalised plant species, underlining our focus on encouraging beneficial wildlife and insects. We know from our own research that UK gardeners are passionate about sustainability and will continue to work on introducing new green initiatives across our stores as we build on #SustainableDobbies.”
