Los ojos abiertos, sin pestañear. Contengo la respiración, suspiro y espero. No soy cultora de la paciencia, pero sé que estas ocasiones son propicias para conseguir lo que en un día cotidiano pareciera imposible: que espere, no importa el tiempo. Ya van a aparecer. Sean las imponentes ballenas, o una manada de guanacos pastando en la altura, o un cóndor en las sierras, o un pingüino de penacho amarillo en una isla sureña.

Los avistajes son un ejercicio maravilloso si se los practica con respeto. La cercanía está implícita en esta relación de minutos, o escasos segundos, entre observadores y observados. El encuentro es encantador. Bien vale la espera, emociona la expectativa y colma el alma el instante en que la naturaleza se nos presenta con tanta generosidad.

Si tuviera que recopilar los mejores momentos que me han deparado los viajes de Huéspedes de estos seis últimos años, sin duda, elegiría entre los más movilizadores a mi primer avistaje de ballenas, en un gomón que se movía de un lado a otro con el viento de septiembre, de pie, haciendo equilibrio con el teleobjetivo para captar la enorme belleza de estos seres de visita en el Golfo Nuevo. Hasta hubiera deseado dejar a un lado la cámara, el ojo tecnológico que estaba de por medio ante la magnitud del fenómeno. Y, simplemente, admirarlas.

La expresión de los animales no tiene palabras y al mismo tiempo, es tan elocuente. Es una de las formas en que el mundo natural nos da un pasaporte para disfrutarlo. Y si hay que esperar, no importa. Seguiré haciendo el esfuerzo de no pestañear.

Eyes open, no blinking. I hold my breath, sigh and wait. I am not particularly patient, but I know these occasions are propitious for what seems impossible on a common day: waiting, no matter how long. They will come.

Be it whales, or a guanaco herd in high pastures, or a condor in the sierras, or a penguin with a yellow tuft on its head in a southern island. Sighting is a wonderful exercise if you practice it respectfully. There is an implicit closeness in this relationship of observers and observed that can last a few minutes or just seconds. Meetings are charming moments. The wait is worthwhile, there is a thrill of expectation and then your soul is at peace when nature appears in all its generosity.

If I had to review the best moments of the Huéspedes outings during the last six years, no doubt I would choose as one of the most exciting events my first sighting of whales. I was standing in a rubber raft that moved from side to side with the September wind, trying to keep my balance with the telephoto lens fitted to the camera, wanting to capture the immense beauty of these beings visiting Golfo Nuevo.

I really wanted to let go of the camera, the interposed technological eye, and appreciate the magnitude of the phenomenon directly. I just wanted to admire the whales.

The expression of the animals leaves you without words and, at the same time, it is so eloquent. It is one of the ways in which the natural world gives us a passport to enjoy it. And if I have to wait, it doesn’t matter. I will still try not to blink.

Editorial El encuentro Pág. 7 peninsula valdes LA BRU­JU­LA Area natural protegida por la Unesco como Patrimonio de la Humanidad, comprende una formación geológica milenaria surcada por el Golfo Nuevo y el Golfo San José, a la que el mar colaboró a dar forma en acantilados altos, restingas que dibujó la erosión, playas, bahías y un paisaje que, cada junio, se completa con la llegada de la ballena Franca Austral. Distante de la ciudad de Buenos Aires en 1400 kilómetros por la Ruta Nacional N° 3, la ciudad cabecera de la zona es Puerto Madryn, mientras que los barcos para avistajes y los recorridos por la Península parten desde el pintoresco poblado de Puerto Pirámides.

La temperatura media mensual es de 10°C, que puede descender en época invernal a los 8°C promedio.

THE COMPASS A natural area protected by UNESCO and declared a Treasure of Humanity; it is a millenary geological formation including New Gulf and San José Gulf. The sea sculpts the high cliffs, sandspits, beaches, bays and a landscape that is visited every June by the Southern Right Whale. By National Route N° 3, the main town in the area, Puerto Madryn, is 1400 kilometers from Buenos Aires. The boats that take tourists out to see the whales are stationed in the coastal town of Puerto Pirámides. The median temperature is 10° C. In winter the median can be 8° C.

ILLA VENTANA.– Si se va en busca del cerro más alto de la provincia de Buenos Aires, se está en el lugar indicado.

También, si está pensado respirar aire puro, porque el mapa serrano del distrito de Tornquist está pintado de flores silvestres, sierras, caballos salvajes, cascadas y, a partir de estos elementos, cantidad de planes para compartir en familia.

paseo: una cabalgata desde la pintoresca Villa Ventana, uno de los poblados que compone, junto a Sierra de la Ventana, Saldungaray, Tornquist y Villa La Gruta el corredor sobre la ruta 76.

Expressions of the great outdoors Trekking, horseback riding, the sierras, architectures, and good wines are only part of this destination’s treats, with five towns and a charming landscape of sierras

ILLA VENTANA – If you are looking for the highest peak in the province of Buenos Aires, you have come to the right place. The same, if you want fresh air and the great outdoors, because the map of the Tornquist district is green, full of wild flowers, sierras, wild horses, waterfalls, and lots of plans for the whole family.

As soon as you get there, map on the table and off you go on the first outing: a horseback ride from the picturesque Villa Ventana, one of the towns, along with Sierra de la Ventana, Saldungaray, Tornquist and Villa La Gruta, of the corridor on Route 76.

Tame and at a slow gate, the horses allow you to have a good view of the wood houses, the artisan workshops, and the easy going life of the villa, from the first perimetric road, and then on to the banks of the Belisario River, among needle bush (Vachellia farnesiana), caves full of lizards attracted by the sun, and several crossings that add excitement to the activity.

As the sun falls, alternatives for the following day are discussed. Trekking is the best alternative, but you have to consider the group: if there are children

or seniors, the ideal destination is the surroundings of mount Bahía Blanca, by the road with the cave paintings and panoramic views. If the group loves adventure, you should not miss the opportunity to conquer the steep path that leads to the highest peak of the Cerro Ventana (literally mount Window), with a curious windowlike natural hole in the rock, 9 meters by 10, that gives the place its name.

Whatever your choice may be, you can get to know the geology of folding plates that are the mark of the modern Paleozoic era.

You need a guide for some of the tours, as in the case of mount Bahìa Blanca, and he will point to the entrance of an 8 km gravel road, with a landscape full of jumping grasshoppers, guanaco herds and lots of wild horses, watching your car go by with curiosity.

Then you start on a 4 hour walk, including a picnic, to the sierra grasslands, and then a waterfall with a pool; and a cave inhabited by bats, until you reach the cave paintings.

Another sunny day and more walking, now in the Villa Ventana, for people of all ages. This time we go trekking to Baptism Fountain, a 10 meter waterfall, surrounded by the sierra, and more millenary folds with a semicircular pool. A guide will help you with the steep path, with big rocks, following the river with its banks covered with vegetation.

With a good snack, you will enjoy a couple of hours in the calm sierra by the fall. You can refresh your feet in the pool before starting up the slope again.

After all that action, a relax on the fourth day is welcome. So it’s time to see the other towns (the farthest is only 40 kilometers), to see the art deco architecture that stitches them

Mientras cae la tarde, llegan las propuestas para la segunda jornada. El trekking se impone, pero es conveniente elegirlo de acuerdo con la conformación del grupo viajero: si hay chicos o personas mayores en él, lo ideal es encarar las cercanías del cerro Bahía Blanca en el camino de las pinturas rupestres, cuevas y panorámicas para ejercitar la contemplación. Si el grupo es más aventurero, no deberá perderse la oportunidad de conquistar el escarpado sendero que desemboca en lo más alto del Cerro Ventana, con un curioso hueco natural homónimo en la roca, de 9 por 10 metros. Cualquiera sea la decisión, se podrá caminar entre la geología de placas plegadas que marcó aquí el periodo paleozoico moderno.

Como algunos de los recorridos deben realizarse con guía, tal el caso del cerro Bahía Blanca, el compañero de ruta indicará el ingreso con vehículo por 8 km de ripio mientras el paisaje se pinta con langostas inquietas, manadas de guanacos y un sinnúmero de caballos salvajes. Luego, comienza una caminata que, en total, tomará

4 horas con picnic incluido y permitirá no sólo descubrir el ambiente del pastizal serrano pampeano sino remojarse (si hace calor) en una cascada con piletón; y observar una cueva habitada por murciélagos hasta llegar a las pinturas rupestres.

Comienza otro día de sol y más caminata, esta vez en la misma Villa Ventana, apta para todo público: trekking hacia la Fuente de Bautismo, una caída de 10 metros de agua abrazada por los cerros y más pliegues milenarios que desemboca en un piletón circular. Un guía debe acompañar y colabora con el esfuerzo del sendero empinado, con rocas grandes, río y vegetación profusa.

Al llegar a la fuente, siguen dos horas de disfrute de las sierras, snack de por medio. Y habrá que remojar los pies en el agua fresca para después encarar el descenso.

Para el cuarto día, después de tanta acción, no vendrá mal un relax merecido.

Por eso, es tiempo de unir el resto de los poblados (no distan más de 40 km entre los más lejanos entre sí) y comenzar con la arquitectura art decó que los hilvana en una historia compartida. Es que tanto la municipalidad y plaza de Tornquist (con

From the valley to the Puna, in zigzag This zigzagging road defies the heights, from the 2192 meters above sea level in Purmamarca to the 4170 at its highest point, and then on to the immensity of the Salinas Grandes salt flats URMAMARCA.– La cinta asfáltica sigue los designios de la ladera en un zigzag por el que vale elogiar a sus constructores. Parece perderse de la vista para luego reaparecer, como el anuncio de la próxima curva. Ese es el encanto de la Cuesta de Lipán, sobre la Ruta Nacional 52, en el departamento de Tumbaya, en Jujuy, se la recorra tanto en subida como en bajada.

Sus 17 km toman un buen rato de manejo cauteloso. Pero mientras tanto se agudizan los buenos reflejos al volante, el paisaje permite disfrutar de una transición clara entre los cardones y las casitas de adobe de Purmamarca, el último pueblo en el Oeste de la Quebrada de Humahuaca, pasando a la aridez acompañada de cielos inmensamente celestes de la Puna. El punto de quiebre se produce definitivamente en lo más alto de la ruta, donde un cartel de Vialidad destaca el objetivo alcanzado: el Abra de Potrerillos, ubicada a 4170 metros del altura, dominando las vistas desde un mirador.

Una vez allí, es tiempo de bajar, cualquiera sea el sentido en el que se viaja: hacia Purmamarca, se bajará atravesando caseríos como el de La Ciénaga; hacia

URMAMARCA – The asphalt ribbon adapts to the accidents of the slope in a zigzag that makes you marvel at its builders. It is lost from sight and then reappears, announcing the next curve.

That is the charm of Cuesta de Lipán, on national route 52, in the department of Tumbaya, Jujuy, going up or down. It takes a while of careful driving to cover its 17 km. You will get sharp reflexes, while you enjoy the landscape, in a transition from the adobe houses in Purmamarca, the last town to the west of the Quebrada de Humahuaca, before you enter the arid Puna with its immense blue skies.

The breaking point is on the highest curve of the road, where a sign says you have come to Abra de Potrerillos, 4170 meters above sea level. From there the only way is down: towards Purmamarca you will traverse villages like la Ciénaga. Towards Susques, the white of the Salinas Grandes appears a few kilometers further on.

Camino obligado Si uno está en Jujuy, habrá una serie de actividades que indefectiblemente tendrá que cumplir antes de regresar a casa. Una de ellas, es visitar Purmamarca, identificarlo en su postal clásica junto al Cerro de los Siete Colores y luego, quedarse horas comprando mantas tejidas en telar con lana de llama, animalitos de alpaca, cucharitas, quenas y cuencos de barro en la feria que rodea toda la plaza central.

Empanadas, locro o humitas en chala serán el plato elegido para ganar calorías. Pero antes de seguir viaje, bien vale quedarse bajo un árbol para escuchar a algún cantor de coplas que se anime a sacar la caja (su instrumento musical, como un tambor delgado) y sus versos que saben contar la vida del Noroeste con sapiencia, rima y musicalidad únicas.

De esta porción de Quebrada repleta de tonalidades, se pasará a la ruta y luego, a subir la Cuesta de Lipán, descubriendo del otro lado los paisajes solitarios e impactantes de la Puna con las salinas como su primer esbozo.

Allí, el silencio sólo lo interrumpe el viento y vale la pena adentrarse entre los hexágonos de sal para descubrir el encanto de su silbido –quizás merodea por aquí Coquena, el espíritu del viento, según la leyenda popular–. Lo cierto es que es maravillosa esa paz a 3500 msnm, más aún sabiendo que se está en una de las mayores depresiones de la provincia, en un blanco que apenas se interrumpe por las sierras del Chañi que lo abrazan por el Sur y el Este, en torno a 12 mil hectáreas de sal a cielo abierto.

Aquí también se trabaja: hay bolsones con sal extraída, camiones que los pasan a levantar y artesanos que tallan animalitos e iglesias con el material primario que les da el suelo en esta región. También dibujan en la piedra, valiéndose de punzones.

Este salar se originó a partir de un periodo en que la tierra se cubrió de aguas con grandes cantidades de sal que traía consigo la actividad de los volcanes, y luego, con la evaporación del agua salada continental, quedó sobre la tierra una costra salina de 30 cm de espesor.

There you can buy llama wool wraps, silver spoons, flutes and earthenware pottery in the artisan fare around the main plaza, and taste empanadas, locro or humita, if you are not worried about calories.

Before you move on, you can rest in the shade of a tree, listening to folk-singers with their caja (a thin drum). From the diverse colors of the Quebrada you take the road on to the Cuesta de Lipán, discovering solitary landscapes of the Puna with the salt flats offering their sketchy extension. Only the wind breaks the silence there, whistling over the salt hexagons. You will find marvelous peace at 3500 meters above sea level, in this white 12.000 hectare extension interrupted by the Chañí sierra to the south and East. The salt flats originated in a period in which these lands were covered by waters and salt came from active volcanoes. When the waters subsided they left a 30 centimeter salt crust.

CABILDO DE BUENOS AIRES Aunque la estructura que luce hoy no es la original, es vital su importancia histórica: aquí se alojó la junta presidida por Cornelio Saavedra el 25 de mayo de 1810. En 1711, se edificó en este solar céntrico de la ciudad un lugar para la Municipalidad. Con diseño del hermano jesuita y arquitecto Giovanni Andrea Blanqui, a partir de1821, el edificio albergó funciones judiciales para ser remodelado en 1880, mutiladas sus arquerías en 1889 para la construcción de la Avenida de Mayo, hasta que en 1931 se lo restauró según las formas originales.

It was built in 1711 in this central lot of the town as the seat for the local authorities. Designed by the Jesuit brother and architect Giovanni Andrea Blanqui, born in Cantón Ticino, from 1821 the building was the seat of the judiciary, and it was remodeled in 1880; in 1889 its arches were mutilated to open Avenida de Mayo (May Avenue). In 1931 its original form was restored.

IGLESIA DE PURMAMARCA Además de un pequeño Cabildo frente a la plaza, hay una foto típica de este pueblo prehispánico y es su iglesia, con muros de adobe y techos de cardón y torta de barro, custodiada por la adoración a Santa Rosa de Lima. Según un tallado en el dintel, se construyó en1648 y dentro, resguarda pinturas cuzqueñas del siglo XVIII. En 1941, le llegó el reconocimiento como Monumento Histórico Nacional.

PURMAMARCA CHURCH Along with a small Cabildo (town hall) across from the plaza, there is a typical site of this pre-Hispanic town and that is its church, with adobe walls and roof of cardón (local cactus) and mud cakes, dedicated to Santa Rosa de Lima.

According to an engraving in the lintel, it was built in 1648 and inside there are paintings from XVIIIth century Cuzco. In 1941 it was declared National Historical Monument.

Salta and Independencia, in the Constitución neighborhood is a corner corresponding to one of the few remains of colonial architecture (1794) still standing in the city. It still houses spiritual exercises, with a patio and a well, a chapel, wooden crosses and an ancient sundial.

CASA DE LA INDEPENDENCIA Allí el 9 de Julio de 1816, las Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata proclamaron su independencia del Reino de España. La casa original de fines del siglo XVII fue demolida en 1903, salvaguardándose el Salón de la Jura de la Independencia, cubierto por un templete de hierro y vidrio de estilo Art Noveau.

A mediados del siglo pasado, se levantó el actual museo, réplica del estilo colonial, con dos columnas salomónicas a ambos costados de la puerta principal que definen su fachada.

HOUSE OF INDEPENDENCE On July 9, 1816, the United Provinces of the River Plate proclaimed their independence from the Kingdom of Spain. The original house from the XVIIth century was demolished in 1903, preserving the room where Independence was sworn, protected with an art nouveau shrine made of iron and glass. The current museum was built in mid-twentieth century, replicating the colonial style, with Salomon columns at both sides of the main entrance that define the façade.

Si bien las ballenas son protagonistas indiscutidas

l escenario es encantador. Las rocas trazadas durante el periodo Terciario consolidaron sus estratos para refugiar la vida marina del pasado en Puerto Pirámides y las costas de la Península de Valdés. Así, agua y viento tallaron el perfil de acantilados, restingas (plataformas de abrasión) y playas de arena y de canto rodado que se extienden por toda la península, Patrimonio Natural de la Humanidad.

La quietud del paisaje se agita con el revoloteo de cormoranes, garzas y gaviotas cocineras. Se alimenta con la tranquilidad de los lobos y elefantes marinos. Y definitivamente, se transforma cuando el calendario llega a mediados de mayo y arriba la ballena Franca Austral, habitué de estas costas como lugar reparado donde reproducirse y parir a sus crías.

De este modo, las casitas de techo de chapa de colores, los barcos sobre la playa, los cielos profusos de estrellas de Puerto Pirámides, el único puerto de avistaje de ballenas en el país y también único núcleo urbano de la península, se torna un lugar obligado para dejarse encantar por el ecoturismo.

of stars of Puerto Pirámides, the only whale sighting port in the country, and also the only urban center in the peninsula, converge in a place you cannot miss if you love the charm of eco tourism.

As always, respect is a fundamental part of the deal for sighting. That is the direct relation established each year with the whales: though their tails and fins can be seen from the coast, the strongest emotion is when the sighting is from a boat close up (they even go under the crafts), where you can hear their sounds, appreciate their individuality, vibrate with their thunderous jumps.

It is curious to see how a 40 ton and 15 meter long giant plays in front of the amazed humans without feeling intimidated. They come up to the

surface and shake off the seagulls that pick at them with their fins, they drop their weight on the water and splash you if you’re not paying attention. It is a really different scene, natural and imposing.

The opportunity to see them swim with their young will come between August and October.

Meanwhile the whales reproduce in these waters, more temperate and calm than the open seas that could be risky for the young.

The rest of the year they will be in the Antarctic convergence zones, where the zooplankton, their basic food, is abundant.

Es curioso ver como un gigante de 40 toneladas y 15 metros de largo juega ante los ojos asombrados de los humanos, sin intimidarse. Asoman sus lomos y sacuden las aletas para espantar las gaviotas que les picotean la piel, lanzan su peso sobre las aguas y salpican a los distraídos.

Es un espectáculo realmente diferente, natural e impactante.

La oportunidad de verlas nadar junto a sus crías llegará recién entre agosto y octubre. Mientras tanto, las ballenas cumplen con su misión reproductiva en estas aguas, más templadas y calmas que las del mar abierto que podría ser riesgoso para los pequeños. El resto del año, lo pasarán en zonas de convergencia antártica, donde el zooplancton, su alimento básico, está disponible en abundancia.

Mundo natural A 1400 km de Buenos Aires, con rumbo Sur, este universo amalgama la soledad de la estepa con la potencia del mar, aquí reparado por los golfos Nuevo y San José.

Las playas transmiten esa calma ondulante de las aguas y convidan con navegaciones o salidas en kayak para entrar en comunión con ellas.

De hecho, remar permite aunar la aventura con la experiencia de los avistajes, sin impacto alguno sobre el medio ambiente.

También el buceo con lobos marinos, que se realiza durante todo el año (salvo en áreas restringidas durante la temporada de ballenas), es un acercamiento increíble al mundo submarino. Lo mejor del caso es que ambas actividades tienen versiones de mayor y menor esfuerzo, así como para bautismo y personas con experiencia.

Como puntos de encuentro claves con los animales, habrá que circular unos cuantos en el mapa de la península. Uno de ellos es la reserva Isla de los Pájaros, con miles de aves en vuelo; otro, es Punta

The beaches transmit an undulating calm to the waters and invite you to navigate them or try a more intimate contact in a Kayak.

Rowing allows a combination of adventure and sighting that does not disturb the eco system. Diving among the sea lions –an all year activity, except in restricted areas in the whale season- is another incredible approach to the submarine world. Both activities have different versions, according to the effort they require, including a maiden experience and an alternative for experienced divers.

You will need to travel a few kilometers to get to the key points on the peninsula.

One of them is the reservation Island of the Birds, with thousands of them in flight.

Another is Punta Norte, the beach

of choice for the immense marine elephants, and this is their biggest outpost in these latitudes. Punta Delgada also has some members of that community and sea lions in the beautiful formation of Caleta Váldez –the sea and a lagoon, separated by a tongue of land that reaches beyond the horizon- where from September to March you can find the funny Magellan Penguins, along with more sea lions and elephants.

You can see a big part of the ecosystem just following the gravel roads of the peninsula. You will see Darwin’s rea, guanacos and pairs of Patagonia Mara. Another reason to have your camera always handy. Or you can tour the zone on mountain bike.

The visit to Punta Pardelas, only 12 km from Puerto Pirámides, is another must. You can reach it by car or trekking following the beach and

Mientras Punta Delgada también alberga algunos miembros de esta comunidad y lobos marinos de un pelo, en la formación bellísima de Caleta Valdés –mar y laguna interrumpidos por una lengua de tierra que se pierde en el horizonte– se pueden encontrar de septiembre a marzo, los simpáticos pingüinos de Magallanes conviviendo con más lobos y más elefantes.

El entendimiento del ecosistema se manifiesta incluso en los caminos de ripio que van surcando la península. Allí se cruzan choiques, guanacos en fila india y parejas de maras a la vera de la ruta. Un motivo más para tener la cámara siempre a mano. O con buen estado físico, una idea alentadora para desandar la zona en mountain bike.

In Pardelas there are natural pools where the water rises and falls, filling the cliffs with marine life. The water is crystalline, good for snorkeling and diving; you can observe sea lions swimming close to the shore and the gravel produces a wonderful feeling as you walk.

Back in the town, the little dirt roads are bathed in the sunset, the locals that know each other by name wave hello and the boats go to their rest.

There are two more things you should try: maybe dinner with fresh fish, the specialty of the place.

ince 1905 the lighthouse that gives its name to this beautiful South Atlantic site, guides ships so they can avoid sandspits. l windsurf es un deporte que disfruta de una gran comunión con la naturaleza. Sentir la fuerza del viento que recorre el cuerpo, acelerándolo a través de las olas que salpican velocidad, son experiencias que producen adicción. Pero como si no fuera suficiente, está el paisaje que todo lo rodea y que puede ser observado desde un lugar privilegiado. Cuesta del viento, en el Noroeste de San Juan, es un lugar especial donde todos estos atributos se entrecruzan. Llegamos con la sensación de que pisábamos por primera vez una playa escondida en el tiempo. Me acompañaban Adrian Díaz, de Argentina, y Antxon Otaegui, de España, dos riders profesionales que tienen la fortuna de vivir haciendo lo que les gusta: navegar. Grandes paredes esculpidas por glaciares extintos y espejos de agua plana, al refugio de ráfagas que superaban los 40 nudos, era el escenario perfecto para registrar en imágenes cómo hay quienes siempre nos recuerdan que parece no haber límites para la aventura. Crucé con el equipo de filmación en alto un canal de agua que me llegaba hasta el pecho. Llegué hasta un islote desde donde me afirmé para disfrutar del espectáculo: con sorprendente velocidad y precisión, los riders pasaban cerca de la cámara y desplegaban sus destrezas donde las tablas se despegaban del agua alcanzando una altura sorprendente, para después girar sobre sí mismos gracias a los movimientos explosivos de las velas y caer con un fuerte impacto sobre la superficie, donde las olas parecían acomodar las tablas para que nada las detenga. Hasta la puesta del sol, un sinfín de maniobras desafió la gravedad, dejando entrever que el esfuerzo y la dedicación son ingredientes irremplazables para alimentar una pasión hasta el extremo.

indsurf is no doubt a sport in communion with nature. Feeling the force of the wind over your body, accelerating through the waves that splash speedily by, is an addictive experience. As if that were not enough, there is the landscape you can observe from a privileged spot. Cuesta del Viento, in San Juan province’s Northeast, close to the town of Rodeo, seems to be a place where all these attributes combine.

On arriving we had the feeling that we were the first explorers to find a beach hidden in time.

I was with Adrian Díaz from Argentina, and Antxon Otaegui from Spain, two professional raiders that have the great fortune of being able to do what they love for a living: navigate. Great walls sculpted by extinct glaciers protect a mirror of water from 40 knot gusts, a perfect scenery to register images of people that always remind us there is no limit to human adventure.

While the raiders, with their sales, mimicked the wind, I crossed a canal with water up to my chest, holding up the film equipment.

The boards jumped from the water to incredible heights. Turning on their axis, thanks to the explosive movements of the sales, they fell with a strong impact on the surface, where the waves seemed to stabilize the boards and keep them going.

The afternoon continued without rest with innumerable maneuvers till the sun set, showing that defying gravity requires effort and dedication, to feed a passion to extremes.

Cuesta arriba, por la ruta nacional 51 y a 90 km de la ciudad de Salta , se encuentran las ruinas de uno de los poblados prehispánicos más desarrollados: además de la geografía puneña, impacta el trazado urbano de 440 viviendas a más de 3200 msnm y los petroglifos hallados, que manifiestan una cultura mágica y artística | Por Soledad Aguado |

ANTA ROSA DE TASTIL.– Mientras subimos la colina, del Oeste viene bajando un grupo de nubes negras. Amenaza una tormenta. El viento se hace fuerte a 3200 msnm y aporta su cuota de misterio y solemnidad a la caminata lenta entre las ruinas de Santa Rosa de Tastil.

Este asentamiento prehispánico que ahora se muestra solitario, supo albergar a más de 2200 indígenas entre 1336 y 1439. Como uno de los pueblos más antiguos de la zona, resulta más destacable aún su estructura urbana así como más valioso el registro arqueológico que este lugar representa.

Fue Eric Boman, un científico sueco quien descubrió el lugar en 1903. Contabilizó 440 casas en lo alto de esta colina que deja visualizar la sucesión de cerros de colores pastel que van abrazando la Ruta 51, ha-

cia el Norte, para desembocar finalmente en San Antonio de los Cobres. De hecho, cuando se alcanza ese punto de visual, la cercanía con la Puna empieza a manifestarse y cuesta subir por la abundancia de oxígeno. Los cardones reinan como únicas especies capaces de hacerle frente al clima y la altura con suficiente actitud.

Todo el esfuerzo cuesta arriba vale la pena: este poblado puede contar su esencia y sus usos con la simpleza de recorrerlo de a pie.

No tiene calles ni caminos demarcados, pero se podrá ir hallando una circulación para conocerlo palmo a palmo. Sí se reconocerán fácilmente sus cinco plazas, los sitios de enterratorio, recintos para el ganado y por supuesto, una interminable sucesión de construcciones habitacionales de forma rectangular sobre 12 hectáreas.

s we climb the slope, a group of menacing black clouds is coming from the West.

The wind is strong at 3200 meters, adding to the mystery and solemnity of our slow walk among the ruins of Santa Rosa de Tastil.

This pre-Hispanic settlement that is solitary now, had a population of more than 2200 between 1336 and 1439. It is one of oldest settlements in the area, all the more reason to value the urban structure and the archeological register it represents.

It was Eric Boman, a Swedish scientist, who discovered the place in 1903. He counted 440 houses at the top of the hill, from where you can visualize the succession of pastel colored mountains along Route 51, to the North, that leads to San Antonio de los Cobres.

Reaching that point, the proximity of the Puna is apparent in the lack of oxygen.

Just walking through the settlement allows you to understand its essence and its uses.

It has no streets, but you can find a way to circulate. It is easy to recognize its five plazas, the burial grounds, the corrals and an unending succession of rectangular residential structures distributed over 12 hectares.

The walls that allow us to read the urban design are pirca: one stone fit on top of the other, built into wide walls so they could defy the topography full of accidents.

Life there can be imagined based also on the great number of objects found: arrow points, ceramic vessels, metal elements, loom-made fabrics and plant fibers described life there to

Las paredes que permiten leer el diseño urbano de los indígenas son de pirca: una piedra apilada sobre la otra, encastrada, que lograba sostenerse como muros anchos desafiando la topografía accidentada.

Pero no sólo de la lectura del pueblo surgen las apreciaciones sobre cómo fue la vida allí, sino también de la gran cantidad de objetos que se han encontrado, incluso al ras del suelo. Puntas de flecha, vasijas cerámicas, elementos metálicos, tejidos de telar y fibras vegetales le describieron este poblado a los investigadores.

Y hay un detalle que resalta por sobre el resto. Se trata de los petroglifos, grabados en la piedra con sentido mágico religioso que presenta escenas de mujeres dando a luz, hombres cazando, manadas de guanacos, y toda una serie de formas geométricas y zoomorfas. De estos registros, se dedujo que los habitantes de Tastil eran teleros, criaban camélidos y fabricaban objetos de piedra que luego comerciaban con los pueblos andinos. Lo que sí no pudo ser determinado, es el por qué del abandono de la ciudadela.

Un alto en el camino La docena de habitantes permanentes que alberga Santa Rosa de Tastil aseguran que

muchos turistas se pierden la belleza de las ruinas porque no las advierten desde la ruta y deciden seguir de largo.

Es válida la advertencia: 14 kilómetros después de Puerta de Tastil, cuando ya las vías del Tren a las Nubes tomaron un camino alternativo al de la ruta 51, se llegará a Santa Rosa de Tastil y allí, los lugareños sabrán indicar perfectamente que, a sólo unos 200 metros más adelante, comienza el camino para ascender al sitio arqueológico.

Pero, en el museo del pueblo también hay historia que contar sobre ellas (ideal visitarlo antes, para ir a las ruinas con conocimiento de causa). Este Museo de Antropología reúne las piezas halladas en el sitio y permite descubrir el significado de Tastil (piedra que suena) en un xilofón hecho con rocas que definitivamente, aportan un agradable sonido musical.

También hay calcos de los petroglifos encontrados en la zona por la artista que recibe en el museo y petroglifos originales para observar.

Una curiosidad más, los panes con formas de camélidos, hombrecitos y lunas que se preparan para homenajear a los espíritus el día de los muertos, cuando todo el pueblo de Santa Rosa se reúne para llamar a los que ya no están.

BICENTENARIO: IMAGENES PARALELAS Salas de fotografía del MNBA – Todo el mes de Mayo

En el marco del Bicentenario argentino, el Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes presenta esta exposición de imágenes que abarcan del siglo XIX a 1940, primera parte de una muestra dividida en tres períodos. Este mes, dialogará un conjunto de pinturas y fotografías de Alejandro Witcomb o Gustavo Schlottmann con óleos de Prilidiano Pueyrredon y Carlos Descalzo, en las que subyace un idéntico propósito.

The artist presents a series of works within a bi-dimensional mission of the image, focusing on texture, related to Piet Mondrian and the pre-Hispanic painters of America and graphic design in ancient Egypt. Some of the woks recreate great paintings by masters such as Leonardo, Vincent Van Gogh and Candido Portinari, that Vidal Lozano presents as a homage.
