Las vacaciones de verano suelen ser la demostración de que podemos encarar los días de un modo distinto. Sin prisas, sin relojes, sin (tantas) preocupaciones. Es que, aunque no estemos de vacaciones, si el universo que nos rodea sí lo está, los días con mentalidad slow ayudan a relajarse. Parece ser un buen momento para aprovechar las horas de un modo más eficiente y lo ideal sería que ese efecto nos durara el resto de los meses porque, sin duda, es saludable. Activar el “modo vacaciones” es un ejercicio que tenemos que aprender, ese ejercicio que nos gusta hacer cuando viajamos, esos momentos que nos permitimos tener cuando nos perdemos en el mapa y en los que somos conscientes de estar "haciendo nada". Aunque en verdad, sí estemos haciendo mucho: dormir la siesta, encontrar un rinconcito a la vera de un arroyo para tomar un mate, salir a cenar sin importar qué hora es, hacer asado un día de semana, ver una película, caminar horas hasta un punto panorámico, comer cosas ricas, charlar, bailar, silbar bajito, leer, nadar, planificar, abrazar, soñar. Ya que en enero nos solemos prometer miles de cosas que jamás empezamos, les propongo arrancar por algo simple: hacer que, en el resto del año, las agujas mágicas se detengan de a ratos para regalarnos ese instante de estar haciendo nada y tanto a la vez.

Summer vacations are proof that we can live our days differently. No rush, no watches, without (that many) worries. Because, even if we are not on our holidays, the universe surrounding us is, and he days with a slow mentality help us relax. It is as if the hands of the clock that chase us took a breather. It seems to be a good moment to use our time more efficiently. It would be ideal for that effect to last the rest of the year because, no doubt, it is healthy. Activating “vacation mode” at certain times of the day is an exercise we need to learn, what we like to do when we travel, those moments when we lose ourselves in the map and we are conscious of doing nothing. Though in truth we are doing a lot: taking a nap under a tree, finding a corner by a stream to have a mate, going out to dinner with our children no matter what time it is, making a barbecue on a week day, see a movie with your partner, walking hours to a panoramic point, eating rich things with friends, talking, dancing, whistling softly, reading, swimming, planning, hugging, dreaming. Since a new year is beginning and in January we typically promise ourselves thousands of things we will never do, I propose to start from something very simple: taking the time to have the magical hands of the clock stop at some point of the day to enjoy that instant of doing nothing and doing so much at the same time.

LaS gRutaS.– una costa bañada por aguas que avanzan y se retiran de forma dramática dejando su marca entre restingas y cuevas talladas en los acantilados no puede pasar inadvertida. en cada atardecer, las playas del pequeño poblado de Las grutas (aunque en constante crecimiento) se pueblan de sombras irregulares proyectadas por los vestigios de la erosión. Playeritos, chorlos, avocetas y ostreros levantan vuelo poblando el cielo, brindando un espectáculo fantástico. con el objetivo de avistar fauna marina, salimos desde el puerto de San antonio este con rumbo a mar abierto. bastará navegar un poco para encontrarnos con una pequeña colonia de lobos marinos que salen, curiosos, a nuestro encuentro. entre la manada, dos machos adultos con su ostentosa melena se miraban con recelo. era cuestión de tiempo que se fueran a enfrentar mas de una vez por el dominio del harem. ajenos a la situación, varias hembras y algunos jóvenes cachorros jugueteaban en el agua. continuamos nuestro viaje alejándonos de la costa. a la distancia, agustín, nuestro guía, divisa un chorro

Naturally unprecedented Two coastal destinations in Río Negro, with a different proposal for Patagonia: adventures in warm waters with whale and marine fauna sightings, swimming near the beach or enjoying sea-food LAS GRUTAS.– A coast bathed by waters that come and go dramatically, leaving there mark on the restingas and the caves carved in the cliffs cannot be overlooked. In each sunset, the beaches of the small town of Las Grutas (growing constantly) are visited by the irregular shadows projected by the vestiges of erosion. Spotted sandpipers, red knots, avocets, and oyster catchers fill the sky, offering a fantastic view. Accompanying the mother, a calf swam insistently in circles around us until finally its eye came out of the water. The gaze was so expressive we could only observe it. The tour had lots of these experiences waiting for us, which allowed all the passengers to take pictures as a keepsake and get back to the coast content. No doubt, to be able to observe marine fauna in such an intimate way, and starting from a new destination, almost at its inauguration, as in the case of San Antonio East, is the possibility of an experience you will not want to miss. Warm waters Las Grutas awaits us with oysters au gratin, squid, and “cornalitos” (Odontesthes incisa), pickled octopus and the traditional salmon barbecue. Every dish is tasty and every place has something to quell your appetite after the adventure. San Matías gulf where the town is located is not only rich in marine fauna but also in fish and, above all, it generates an unusual eco-system that offers tourists great fun. La pesca se practica todo el año, desde la costa y embarcada

de vapor de agua que indicaba la presencia de una ballena. A la espera de ver un segundo chorro para volver a divisarla, otra ballena nos sorprendió pasando justo debajo de nuestra pequeña embarcación, un instante único que nos permitía tener un contacto más íntimo con ella. Acompañando a la madre, un ballenato curioso nos rodeaba insistentemente hasta que finalmente se contorneó para sacar su ojo fuera del agua. Su mirada era tan expresiva que uno no podía dejar de observarlo. El recorrido tenía reservadas muchas más de estas experiencias, lo que permitió a todos los pasajeros sacar fotos, atesorar vivencias y regresar felices a la costa. Sin duda, poder observar la fauna marina de una manera íntima como ésta, y partiendo desde un destino novel, casi de estreno, como es San Antonio Este, es la posibilidad latente de una experiencia imperdible. Aguas cálidas Las Grutas aguarda con almejas gratinadas, calamares, rabas y cornalitos fritos, pulpitos en escabeche, mariscos en distintas preparaciones y la tradicional salmoneada (piezas de salmón fresco hechas a las

brasas). No hay plato que no sea sabroso ni lugar donde uno se siente a la mesa donde no lo hagan deleitar mientras sacia el apetito después de la aventura. Es que el Golfo San Matías que abraza a la localidad no sólo es rico en fauna marina sino también ictícola, y sobre todo, genera un ecosistema insólito que incide particularmente sobre el disfrute del turista. ¿Quién imaginaría que las aguas del mar patagónico serían cálidas como para zambullirse sin necesidad de neoprene alguno? Aquí, en estas playas anchas que bordean la villa de arquitectura mediterránea y hotelería frente al mar, hay una mixtura de elementos única que genera esa calidez impensada: la amplitud de mareas se une al sistema de circulación de las corrientes costeras, las altas temperaturas de la época estival, la nubosidad baja y las escasas lluvias en temporada, resultan en 24°C increíbles para extender las jornadas sumergidos en agua salada. POTRERILLOS.– Un espejo de agua turquesa rodeado de cordillera marrón con picos blancos anuncia la llegada a una extensa comarca turística pincelada por la historia de baquianos y patriotas. Antes de llegar, viñedos y bodegas -orientadas a producir grandes vinos y atender a turistas-, junto a montañas y glaciares del Cordón del Plata son postales tentadoras. Potrerillos, sitio equidistante entre Ciudad de Mendoza, alta cordillera, el centro de la provincia y la primera zona vitivinícola del país, es una tierra de contrastes que atrae. Descanso y diversión, vida campestre y turismo aventura, serenidad y adrenalina, el encuentro de amigos y con uno mismo se unen en este lugarcito especial. Por eso, los turistas se debaten entre “hacer nada” o hacer todo lo que ofrece. Bajo la custodia de la máxima cumbre de América, el Aconcagua, la agenda de actividades tienta al ocio activo: trekking, hikking (trekking+ascenso), rafting, cabalgatas, hidrospeed, mountain bike, escalada en roca y en hielo, windsurf en el lago, pesca en arroyos y con mosca en el Dique Potrerillos, y avistaje de aves integran el menú, que siempre puede maridarse con buenos vinos y carnes asadas con el sabor de la leña. Descansar, caminar, ver la vida y la naturaleza con ojos de viajero bajo la custodia de la máxima cumbre de América son algunos de los placeres de quienes visitan esta tierra de sol

diversas de alojamiento en cabañas. En ellas, es sagrada la hora de la siesta y más tarde, el mate con tortitas con dulce casero. Diario de viaje Decidimos explorar la zona. Subimos al Cerro El Cristo en la localidad El Salto, para ver toda la comarca. Pasamos por la cervecería artesanal, para degustar las variedades elaboradas con agua de glaciar, inclusive la añejada en barricas donde se criaron algunos de los mejores Malbec. Como aún había luz en este extremo Oeste del país, improvisamos un trekking de baja dificultad en una mina a cielo abierto. Las rocas -con grandes concavidades que emulan un paisaje lunar- se combinan con un cielo límpido y vegetación autóctona, en especial, cactus floridos de diversos tamaños. Ya para ese momento entendimos que uno de los valores de la zona es la pureza y calidad del aire. Nos sentíamos muy vitales, pese a todo lo que habíamos hecho. Estábamos a unos 1800 msnm, con buena cantidad de oxígeno y nada de contaminación. Teníamos ganas de más y al día siguiente, partimos al imperdible trekking en el Parque Provincial Aconcagua. Un sendero de interpretación de una hora de caminata nos guía por millones de años. Agua, viento y glaciares modelaron el Valle de Horcones. Desde el mirador se aprecia la Pared Sur del Aconcagua, con sus glaciares colgantes (seracks), el superior de 200 a 300 metros de espesor. La flora subacuática de la Laguna de Horcones es un banquete para las aves acuáticas que la habitan. Abierto para todo público y el año entero es más que recomendable entre los atractivos de alta cordillera, aunque también se destacan el mítico Puente del Inca, el Cristo Redentor y los lugares históricos y prehistóricos próximos a la villa de Uspallata.

Cuesta arriba , el camino de montaña entre Vallecitos y Tupungato

intercalado con un día de descanso dedicado a descubrir los sabores de la comarca –truchas, chivitos, hongos y otras exquisiteces-, nos encaminamos a otro imperdible de Mendoza: la quebrada del cóndor. cabalgata, avistaje de cóndores y hospitalidad de sus dueños son los atractivos de este lugar cerca de Potrerillos. Los animales son mansos y eduardo, el anfitrión, guía con maestría. después de subir a 2800 msnm, disfrutar de la inmensidad, divisar lagos y cadenas montañosas desde las alturas, adriana y “cato” veggiani tienen el asado listo con una previa de empanadas. no podíamos irnos de la tierra del vino sin visitar bodegas. ante tanta oferta, nos recomendaron visitar al menos una artesanal y otra industrial. Pero nos quedamos con ganas de ver el paisaje de Potrerillos en cada temporada, cuando renueva su escenario. Montaña, agua y verde en verano; bosques dorados en otoño; nieve en invierno; flores silvestres, aves y sol en primavera. así la naturaleza preserva todo el año el denominador común: sentir a pleno entre valles y montañas andinas, cerquita del sol y del vino.S

conviene al menos planear una estadía de entre 5 y 7 días. lo recomendado es intercalar jornadas de actividades intensas con otras de descanso y paseos. Before we arrive, there are vineyards and wineries –oriented towards producing great wines and receiving tourists- by mountains and glaciers of the Silver Cordon (Cordón de Plata), a tempting postcard. Potrerillos, equidistant from the City of Mendoza, the high mountains, the centre of the Province and the first wine zone of the country, is a land of attractive contrasts. Rest and fun, country life and adventure tourism, serenity and adrenaline, meeting friends and finding oneself, all come together in this special little place. We reached ours at siesta time, the perfect moment to rest in the land of the sun. Later we tried the first homemade cakes that would accompany us our whole stay. And we discovered that each sunset and sunrise is a kaleidoscope on a grand scale. Travellers agenda We decided to explore the area. We climbed mount El Cristo in the locality of El Salto, to see the whole region. We visited the artisan brewery, tasting the varieties

made with glacier water, including some aged in casks that were used for some of the best malbec wines. Since there was still light in this western frontier of the country, we improvised a low difficulty trekking expedition to an open-pit mine. The rocks –with great craters that emulate a lunar landscape- combine with a clear sky and the local vegetation, specially flowering cacti of different sizes. By that time we had understood that one of the great assets of the area is the purity and quality of the air. We felt very vital, even though we had done a lot. We were at 1800 masl, with a good quantity of oxygen and no contamination at all. A clear sky and sharp stars at night confirmed what our body and our mind was telling us. We wanted more and started on the trekking expedition you will not want to miss to Aconcagua National Park. A one hour walk on a path takes us through millions of years. Water, wind, and glaciers modeled the Horcones Valley. From the vantage point you can see the South Wall of the Aconcagua, with its hanging glaciers (seracks), with the highest one 200 to 300 meters thick. The sub-aquatic flora of the Horcones Lagoon is a banquet for the water birds living there. Open to all comers the year round, it is highly recommended as one of the great attractions of the high mountain range, though there is also the mythical Puente del Inca (Inca Bridge), the Christ, and the historic and prehistoric sites close to Uspallata village. Alternating with a day of rest dedicated to discovering the flavors offered in the local restaurants where you can have trout, goat, mushrooms and other delicacies, we took the road to another place you will not want to miss in Mendoza: the Quebrada del Condor (Condor Gulch). A horseback ride, condor sighting and the hospitality of the owner are the attractions of this place close to Potrerillos, where Andean nature is at its best. The animals are tame and Eduardo is a great guide. After climbing 2800 masl, you can enjoy the immensity, sight lakes and mountain ranges from the heights. Adriana and “Cato” Veggiani have the barbecue ready with empanadas and great salads. We could not leave the land of wine without visiting wineries. We did not know which to choose. We were told to visit at least one artisan and one industrial winery. We really enjoyed it. But we were left with the need to return to the landscape of Potrerillos every season, to see how vistas and sensations are renewed. Mountains, water and greenery in summer; golden woods in autumn; snow in winter; wild flowers, birds and sun in the spring. That is how nature preserves the common denominato all year round r: allowing us to feel really alive among the valleys and the Andean mountains, close to the sun and the wine.S

Lo primero a tener en cuenta no sólo es la comodidad de los pasajeros en el habitáculo, sino también no obstruir la visibilidad hacia atrás ni dejar elementos sueltos que ante una maniobra inesperada impacten violentamente contra los ocupantes. Si bien se comercializan abiertamente, los portabicis que se enganchan en el baúl del auto no están homologados sino, por el contrario, prohibidos por la Ley de tránsito por extender los límites del vehículo por fuera de la línea del paragolpes. Si la opción es usar el portaequipaje en el techo, lo mejor es confiar en valijas diseñadas para tal fin y no sobrecargarlo. Para llevar la moto de agua o el cuatri en un trailer, hay que tener en cuenta que si bien el mismo no precisa estar inscripto en el Registro de la Propiedad automotor, sí debe tener una chapa con el número 101 más el número de patente del auto que lo está tirando, además de contar con las luces de posición, stop y guiños en sincronía con las del auto. y muy importante, es preciso que el conductor tenga licencia con la categoría correspondiente acorde al peso y cantidad de ejes del trailer. ESQUINA.– Aquí el sol sale del lado del campo abierto y se pone detrás de la taperita colorada, mientras se desensillan y cepillan los caballos. Llegamos poco antes de esa hora mágica en que las chicharras empiezan a ensayar su música y los gauchos a preparar la cena, aunque todavía esté rodando el mate en la cocina de la estancia. Los caballos conviven con la belleza de la casona, acrecentada a once habitaciones a partir de un casco principal. La arquitectura en U abraza un patio poblado de tipas y se nutre del fresco de la galería y sus enredaderas en flor. Las habitaciones, que ventilan a este espacio semicubierto, están decoradas como si fueran únicas, con muebles antiguos rescatados de cuanto mercado o remate exista. Angie, la dueña del lugar (al que considera “su lugar en el mundo” pero no tiene celo en compartirlo con viajeros de todas partes) se encargó de pulirlos, pintarlos y devolverles la magia. Y para la puerta de cada cuarto, pintó un

pajarito típico, esas especies que podrá uno ver de a caballo a la mañana siguiente. Pero no hay que esperar. Siempre hay un equino listo y un gaucho con polainas rayadas y delantal a tono sobre las bombachas, vestimenta típica del campo correntino, para abrir la tranquera hacia la última cabalgata del día, con el más tibio rayo del sol. Primero se atravesará el pajonal dorado por el atardecer, después los caballos se aventurarán a cruzar la laguna y allí, muy cerca, estarán garzas moras, blancas y rosadas, tortugas acuáticas, patos biguá y hasta el yacaré con el que, a tal punto llegó la familiariedad, que tiene nombre propio: César. La cabalgata abre el apetito y provoca el relax, el descanso. Dicen aquí que los paseos a caballo en la estancia (sean de dos horas o de días de recorrido) tienen una función terapeútica. Se enseña a galopar, a señalar, capar y enlazar terneros, y a cabalgar para alejar miedos y fobias.

This estancia in esquina, corrientes, full of charm, combines exquisite decor with horses perfectly trained that take you to the wilderness, the swamps, where you can enjoy watching the birds, and rural chores ESQUINA –Here the sun comes up from the open fields and sets behind the red walls, while horses are unsaddled and groomed. We got there a little before that magic hour when the cicadas start their music and the gauchos prepare dinner, though mate is still making the rounds of the kitchen. The horses share the beauty of the house, grown to eleven rooms from the main building. The architecture in U surrounds a patio with Rosewood trees and feeds on the freshness of the gallery and its flowering creepers. The rooms that open onto this semi-covered space, are decorated as if they were unique, with ancient furniture rescued from markets and auctions. Angie, the owner of the establishment (which she considers “here place in the world” but has no qualms in sharing it with travelers from all over) polished, and painted them and returned them to their magic. And on the door of each room she painted a typical bird, those species you will be able to see on a horseback ride next morning. But you do not have to wait. There is always a horse ready and a gaucho with striped leggings and matching apron over baggy pants, the typical clothing of the Corrientes countryside, who will open the tranquera (gate) for the last ride of the day, with the last rays of the sun. First you will traverse the pajonal (scrubland), tainted gold in the sunset, then the horses will cross the lagoon and there, close by, you will have the Cocoi Herons, white and rose, water turtles, biguá ducks, and even the caiman, so familiar, it even has a name: Cesar. The ride gives you an appetite and the need to relax and rest. They say here that horseback rides in the estancia (for two hours or days on end) have a therapeutical function. You are taught to gallop, to point, to catch and castrate calves, and to ride against your fears and phobias. At dawn everything is ready once again. You can go to the wilderness to recognize typical tree species –Tabebuia, Tipuana Tipu, Carob, Epinillo (Aphyllanthoideae), and Schinus- see country woodpeckers pecking at trunks, and in the afternoon you can help vaccinate calves in the open countryside. The Barbecue is a must to get your energy back. They also pop the corks on rich wines accompanied with cheese and cold cuts in the living-room, and you can enjoy homemade pasta with filling, along with local deserts, such as candied grapefruit. The night is filled with stars behind the mud wall. You almost feel like joining in the song with the cicada. Maybe a chamamé (local music) to honor the land of Corrientes before silence becomes the best blanket for your sleep.S

A menudo los padres acusan a las madres de comprar para sus hijos cuanta cosa tienen ante sus ojos en una vidriera. Ejemplo: la quinta camperita color rosa. Pero hay compras que no son tentaciones sino necesidades y, encuadradas en ese punto, muchas tienen que ver con la practicidad a la hora de viajar con los pequeños. ¿Por qué cargar con un bolso de dimensiones inhumanas para llevar pañales y mamaderas en una excursión de a pie si es posible elegir una mochila cómoda donde poner lo justo y necesario? Piensen cómo acarrearon a sus hijos la última vez que salieron de caminata. Tal vez lucharon con las ruedas del cochecito trabadas en un terreno escarpado, o regresaron con los brazos agotados de llevarlos a upa. Solución existe y la conocí hace 5 años como “trekkinera”: una mochila de estructura de acero liviana y tela fuerte, que permite sentar al bebé dentro y cargarlo como una mochila de trekking, ajustándola con correas a la cintura del papá/mamá. Todos seguros, todos cómodos, desde los 6 meses hasta los 3 años. Otra feliz idea es tener una conservadora para enchufar en el auto. Las hay de distintos tamaños y prestaciones, pero sería ideal tener una que brinde frío y calor, con sistema electrónico. El baño fuera de casa tampoco es tema sencillo. ¿Alguien probó alguna vez meter en el baúl de su auto las bañeritas plásticas? Imposible. Pero también el ingenio (dinamarqués en este caso) le ganó la pulseada con bañeras flexibles, plegables, que se ponen como fondo del baúl y se rearman en destino.S

Everybody safe, everybody comfortable, from 6 months to 3 years. Another good idea is to have a hot/cold machine you can plug in to the car. They exist in different sizes and with different features, but the ideal thing is to have one that keeps things hot and cold, with an electronic system. The bath outside the house is also a complicated issue. Did anybody try putting a plastic tub in the trunk of the car? Impossible. But ingenuity (from Denmark in this case) won the day with flexible, foldable bath tubs, that can go on the bottom of the trunk and you only need to re-assemble it when you get to your destination.S

JUNIN DE LOS ANDES.– 7 AM. Dos amigos y yo encaramos la cara Norte del Lanín, hacia sus 3776 msnm. Esta es la ruta más normal, la más rápida para regresar al día siguiente a casa. El primer paso –ineludible, por cierto- al llegar a la base es presentarse en la Oficina Seccional Arroyo Turbio del Parque Nacional Lanín y completar un formulario donde se controlará que se posee todo el equipo necesario para el ascenso, desde lo personal hasta lo de seguridad. También es muy importante consultar si los refugios disponen de lugar para pernoctar (cosa que en temporada alta es muy difícil), ya que si no hubiera disponibilidad, tendríamos que anexar la carpa al equipo. Permisos en mano y con el dato de que sí hay refugios con o del camin a id espacio para nosp rí Una parte the road of rt sotros, emprendea p A hard mos el ascenso. Los primeros 50 minutos son muy tranquilos, atravesando un bosque de lengas hasta llegar al Arroyo Turbio. Desde ahí se puede apreciar todo un filo llamado “La Espina de Pescado”, un trayecto de restos de piedra volcánica suelta y filosa, por donde transitaremos parte de nuestro ascenso. Ese suelo nos acompaña hasta llegar al vital desvío de Mulas (si no, iríamos a parar a un refugio abandonado expuesto a fuertes vientos). Al alcanzar los 2450 metros de altura por zigzagueantes senderos nos encontraremos con el refugio RIM 26 (refugio de infantería de montaña).

Como no había gente, decidimos atacar la cumbre desde aquí y sentirnos privilegiados por la caída del sol, con el fondo de la Cordillera de los Andes, el lago Tromen, el Colmillo del Diablo y el Volcán Llaima. Bien abrigados para hacer frente a las bajas temperaturas, no paramos de tomar fotografías de semejante espectáculo. Dentro del confortable refugio y a la luz de las velas, preparamos una buena picada mientras se terminaba de cocinar la cena. También dejamos listas las mochilas con el equipo necesario para atacar la cumbre bien temprano por la mañana. Y así, tras la noche y el desayuno, encaramos el camino nuevamente con energías renovadas. Los primeros minutos siempre son duros e incómodos, pero luego de una parada para sacarse la ropa de exceso e hidratarse, todo cambia. Al poco tiempo ya nos encontramos en el refugio CAJA a 2600 msnm, y pocos metros más adelante, comenzamos a transitar por la nieve. Estando cerca de la cumbre con los grampones y el casco puesto y la piqueta de travesía en la mano hay que sortear unos pasos entre nieve, piedra y hielo. Sobrellevados estos pasos llegamos a un plato grande donde nos encontramos reparados del frío viento y de ahí a la cumbre, solo restan un par de metros. Desde la cima, se pueden apreciar un montón de picos, volcanes y lagos. Luego de contemplar ese paisaje, tomar unas fotos y felicitarnos, emprendimos el regreso con la satisfacción plena de haber logrado el objetivo. Llegamos alrededor del mediodía al refugio donde teníamos el resto de nuestro equipo. Sopa, mate y resto del viaje hasta el puesto de guardaparques, para informar que la travesía había salido bien. De allí, directo a San Martín de los Andes, en busca de buenas empanadas, para seguir celebrando.S

JUNÍN DE LOS ANDES – 7 AM. Two friends and I took on the Noirth face of the Lanín volcano, climbing its 3776 meters above sea level. This is the normal route, the fastest, to be able to return home the next day. The first thing you do when you reach the base is to go to the Lanín National Park Arroyo Turbio Local Office and fill a form where they control you have all the necessary equipment for the ascent, including from personal stuff to security. It is also very important to consult if the shelters have room (which in high season is very difficult), if not we will have to add a tent to the equipment. Permit in hand, we start ascending. The first 50 minutes are easy, going through lenga beech woods till we reach the Turbio Stream. From there you can see a sharp edge called “the Fish Spine”, an area with the remains of loose and sharp volcanic stones, which we will transit on our way down. This soil is with us till we reach the vital detour of the Mules (if we miss it, we will end up in an abandoned shelter exposed to strong winds). When we reach 2450 meters by zigzagging paths, we find the RIM 26 shelter (mountain infantry shelter). Since there was no one there, we decided to attack the summit from here and felt the privilege of watching the sunset, with the Andes Mountains in the background, Tromen Lake, the Devils tusk and the Llaima Volcano. Wrapped in our warm clothes we

could not stop taking pictures of this spectacle. Within the comfortable shelter and in the candlelight we prepared a good picada (cold cuts and cheese) while we cooked dinner. We also prepared the backpacks with the necessary equipment to attack the summit early in the morning. After breakfast next morning we took the road again. The first minutes are always hard and uncomfortable, but after the first stop to take of the excess clothes and hydrate, everything changes. In a short while we were at the CAJA shelter, 2600 masl, and a few meters further on, we found snow. We were close to the summit with the crampons and the helmet and the pickax in hand, finding our way in the snow, through passes among stones and ice. When we got through we came to a big plate where we found shelter from the cold wind and from there to the summit it is only a few meters. From the top you can appreciate lots of peaks, volcanoes, and lakes. After contemplating this landscape, taking a few pictures and congratulating each other, we started back. We got to the shelter where we had the rest of our equipment around noon. Soup, mate and the rest of the trip to the park guards post to inform the climb had been fine. From there straight to San Martín de los Andes, in search of some good empanadas to continue celebrating.S

Siete colores definen a Purmamarca. La Paleta del Pintor es el cerro que, a pinceladas, marca el paisaje de Maimará. el blanco de la iglesia de yavi va a tono con la pulcritud inconmensurable de las Salinas grandes. Los valles fértiles de la quebrada de humahuaca explotan en verde de cultivos. Los cielos de humahuaca y más aún, los de la Puna, son el prototipo del celeste. y por si la naturaleza ya no le hubiera dado suficiente color a Jujuy, el carnaval, cada febrero, le adiciona sus diablitos, sus comparsas, su alegría. el mapa del color que rodea el trazado de la Ruta 9, partiendo desde la capital San Salvador de Jujuy, asciende en metros sobre el nivel del mar a medida que se avanza camino a La quiaca, a través de 290 km. el primer gran atractivo de la ruta lo regala Maimará con su Paleta del Pintor, rasgos ondulantes sobre los cerros del periodo terciario. a 3 km de allí, la Posta de hornillos empieza a contar la historia que tiene este camino: este era un punto clave que unía el alto Perú con el virreinato del Río de la Plata, hoy convertido en museo de la guerra de la independencia. quien llega hasta aquí no debe perderse el recorrido arqueológico por el antigal de hornillos, al que sólo se accede con un guía. un poco más adelante, la Ruta 9 ofrece una bifurcación camino a otro cerro famoso por su geografía: el de los Siete colores, la postal más típica de Jujuy, en Purmamarca. tiene casitas de adobe, una feria superpoblada de tejidos, vasijas y muñequitas vestidas con aguayos, casas de familia convertidas en restaurantes caserísimos donde degustar locro, tamales y empanadas a cual más sabrosa, y un camino, el de Los colorados, para desandar de a pie, entre el cementerio y el extremo oeste de la población.

El carnavalito pone color a febrero

Justamente con la brújula hacia el Oeste, se puede dirigir uno a la Cuesta de Lipán, superar los 4300 msnm y después, hallar la sorprendente blancura de las Salinas Grandes, una extensión de 12 mil hectáreas de sal a cielo abierto. Un poco más adelante, rodeado de mesetas a puro salitre, está Susques, pueblo limítrofe con Chile de impronta minera, con su iglesia de piedras y adobe del siglo XVI. De vuelta al eje de la 9, la siguiente población en la Quebrada de Humahuaca es Tilcara. Aquí, ganan los colores ocre. Es una urbe de trazado prolijo a la vera de los ríos Grande (que corre de Norte a Sur) y Huasamayo, donde el rastro incaico tiene su mayor presencia en el Pucará, una fortaleza donde se protegían de las invasiones, basada en construcciones de muros anchos de planta cuadrangular. Es el único pucará habilitado a los turistas en la Quebrada. También hay que caminar, o cabalgar, o llevar llamas de tiro por la Garganta del Diablo, la formación que desencadena en una cascada altísima y desde ahí, se ve toda la Quebrada. De aquí en más, con rumbo Norte, las iglesias de Huacalera, Uquía y Humahuaca son protagonistas. También la fábrica de cerámica de Uquía, donde se puede conocer el horno encendido, las manos en la masa y las iglesitas en miniatura aún crudas, bellísimas. Y ya cuando el cielo celeste de La Quiaca marca la cercanía con la altura, Yavi reaviva la paleta. Originado en 1667, el caserío tiene una capilla armoniosa, con altar cubierto por láminas de oro, diseñada por la familia de los marqueses de Tojo y Campero.

Carnaval multicolor Del 18 al 21 de febrero, el pueblo jujeño (y sus invitados) bailan, brindan, llenan de bullicio cada rincón. El que no se viste de diablito o de alegre bailarín de carnavalito, termina con la cara entalcada y envuelto en papel picado como parte de un juego de celebración nocturno al compás de un bastonero que marca la coreografía. Pero todo empieza con un ritual que tiene calendario bien ajustado: el desentierro del diablo de una apacheta de piedras o algún lugar mágico. Antes de la fecha indicada, hay dos jueves previos de reunión, con chicha y sabores quebradeños de por medio, para alejar las penas en un ambiente familiar. Se trata de los jueves de Compadres y Comadres, a puro brindis.S

mardi gras is arriving, the summer sun that makes the multicolored peaks shine, and the plazas always vibrant with artisan wear. The flavors, the churches and the culture of this vast Andean corridor are alight, that is why we decided to follow Rout 9 and its adjacent roads to suggest the points you will not want to miss in the province Seven colors define Purmamarca. The painters Palette is the mountain that shows the way to Maimará. The white of the Yavi church is in the same tone as the immensity of the Big Salt Flats (Salinas Grandes). The fertile valleys of the Quebrada de Humahuaca explode in cultivated greens. The Humahuaca skies and those of the Puna are prototype blue. And as if nature had not given enough color to Jujuy, there is the Mardi Gras, every February, with its devils, its musical groups, its joy. The color map surrounding Rout 9, starting from the capital, San Salvador de Jujuy, climbs meters above sea level towards La Quiaca, through 290 kilometers. The first great attraction is Maimará with its Painter’s Palette, undulating features of the peaks from the tertiary period. Three kilometers from there, the Posta de Hornillos starts telling the story of this road: this was a key point linking Bolivia, then called Alto Perú, with the viceroyalty of the River Plate. The place is now a museum of the Independence Wars. Coming here, you do not want to miss the archeological tour of the Antigal de Hornillos, that can only be reached with a guide. A little bit on, Rout 9 offers a bifurcation towards another famous mountain: The Seven Colors peak, the most typical post-card of Jujuy. Purmamarca is the town privileged by this presence. Below it there adobe huts with straw roofs, a fair full of knit fabrics, pots, and little dolls dressed with aguayo (traditional fabric) surrounding the main plaza, family homes converted into restaurants with homemade food, where you can taste locro, tamales and empanadas, all very tasty. There is also the Los Colorados road that lets you walk from the cemetery to the western limit of the town. Towards the west you can go to the Cuesta de Lipàn, at 4300 meters above sea level and find the surprising whiteness of the Salinas Grandes, an extension of 12000 hectares of salt open to the skies. Jumping the basins where the salt blocks are washed is a typical postcard of the place. A little bit on, surrounded by pure saltpeter plateaus, is Susques, a town that limits with Chile. It is a mining town with its stone and adobe church form the sixteenth century, with Cuzco paintings.

Returning to rout 9, the next population in the Quebrada de Humahuaca is Tilicara. Ochre colors are dominant here. It is a tidy town by the Rivers Grande (that flows from North to South) and Huasamayo, where the Inca left their imprint in the Pucará, which is how they called the fortresses that protected locals from invasions, with wide square walls. It is worth a visit, being the only pucará open to tourists in the Quebrada. You also need to walk or ride or take llamas through the Garganta del Diablo (the Devils Throat), a formation that ends in a high cascade and a pool where you can take a refreshing plunge. There is a full view of the Quebrada from there. Going North you find the churches of Huacalera, Uquía and Humahuaca. There is also the ceramics factory at Uquía, where you can see the oven, the people working the clay and the little miniature churches, so beautiful. And when the blue skies of La Quiaca show you are near the highest point, Yavi again offers white and earthy tones in Jujuy’s palette. Founded in 1667, the town has a harmonious chapel, with an alter covered in gold leaf, designed by the family of the marquises of Tojo and Campero. multicolored Carnival February 18 to 21 the people of Jujuy (and their guests) dance, toast, fill each corner with sounds. Those who are not dressed up as devils or carnavalito dancers, end up with their faces full of talcum and covered in confetti, part of the celebratory night games, all directed by the baton master, that leads the choreography. It all starts with a ritual: the exhumation of the devil from some magic place. This marks the beginning of the unending dances. There are two previous Thursdays where people meet to drink chicha and other Quebrada homemade liquors, to celebrate with the family. These are the Thursdays of Compadres and Comadres (Godfathers and Godmothers). What people want is joy and good intentions, with the land dancing to the music. And they do not need to insist too much for visitors to join in the fun.S

Siguiendo la Ruta 1, un recorrido desde la capital santafecina hacia el Noreste por un derrotero de pueblitos costeros amables, con pesca, festivales, lanchas y vida de río

La Ruta 1 es el trazado a seguir si se va en busca de pueblos que combinen buenas dosis de historia con páramos de naturaleza desde los cuales el río se disfrute a pleno. Puede tratarse del magnánimo Paraná, o bien de arroyos y riachos que merecen igual respeto por la cantidad de aventuras y tardes de sol y playa que pueden ofrecer. Bastarán con 10 minutos en auto para percibir el dibujo natural de San José del Rincón y Arroyo Leyes, sitios tranquilos ideales para la pesca con devolución y las noches de doma y chamamé a todo volumen como fiesta regional. Cuarenta kilómetros más adelante, se abren las calles arenosas de Santa Rosa de Calchines, también con vida de río presta para organizar asados con amigos en la ribera, subirse a una lancha inquieta para descubrir las islas o incursionar en la pesca, expectantes por la abundancia de surubíes, bogas, patíes y armados, reyes de las aguas. Following Route 1, a tour from the capital of Santa Fe towards the North-east following a road full of friendly towns, with fishing, festivals, boat rides and river life Route 1 is what you need to follow if you are searching for towns that combine history with the wild, where you can fully enjoy the river. It could be the great Paraná or little streams and rivulets that deserve the same respect because of the adventures and the sunny afternoons at the beach they can offer. Only 10 minutes by car allowed us to see the natural outline of San José del Rincón and the Leyes stream, ideally tranquil places for fishing and nights of rodeo and local music (chamamé) at full blast in regional fiesta. Twenty five miles further on we find the sandy streets of Santa Rosa de Calchines, also with river life ready to organize barbecues with friends on the coast, climb on board a lurchy boat to discover the islands or try your hand at fishing, expectant because of the abundance of surubí (pseudoplatystoma), boga (Leporinus obtusidens), patí (Luciopimelodus pati), and Striped Raphael catfish, the kings of these waters. In the town, you can see the nineteenth century construction, specially the church of Santa Rosa of Lima, intact after 150 years of history. Cayastá –adding another 25 miles, always with the river and boating as the main features- is also noteworthy because of its past, since it is the old Santa Fe: founded by Juan de Garay in 1573, it was the previous emplacement to the current capital. A tour of the Archeological Park of Santa Fe La Vieja will explain everything, along with a visit to the Memory Museum Cécil González offering a view of objects of daily use by Swiss and French immigrants that inhabited these lands. There is also a general store you can visit here. Again the route and a few minutes further on is Helvecia, this time by the waters of the San Javier River, an agricultural colony inhabited initially by Mocoví Indians and Swiss immigrants, a strange mix, where the church, the Regional Historical Museum Senator Armando Antille, the rural ranches with tourist activity and the attractive coast where you can have photo safaris. Finally you come to San Javier, 100 miles from Santa Fe. There are more islands, more boat tours and river fun for everyone.S

Los imperdibLes ay dos destinos dentro de este mapa a los que hay que ir al menos una vez en la vida: las cataratas del iguazú, hay nueva maravilla mundial en Misiones, y los esteros del iberá, el segundo humedal más grande de américa del Sur, ubicado en el noreste de corrientes. Las cataratas son un espectáculo como sea que se elija recorrerlas, pero hay una serie de puntos de vista que merecen ser vividos, como el que provee el recorrido en gomón para dejarse bautizar por un salto; la caminata por el circuito inferior; y el balcón sobre la garganta del diablo. Some say its beauty was helped by the legend of aboriginal lovers, with feuding families, that died, wounded by enemy arrows.
