In Teotihuacán, there is an incredible place to understand nature. It is called Reino Animal, which developed an agricultural production program to feed its more than 1,400 animals, and it has scheduled breeding which guarantees its conservation. You can stroke the deer, giraffes, zebras and ostriches; you feed the sheep, goats and horses; the bird sanctuary has Yucatecan parrots, chachalacas and love birds; and there’s a forest with iguanas.

¿Sabías que en 1990 surgió una idea que con el tiempo llegó a formar parte de la oferta turística que tiene la capital de Nuevo León? Es el Parque Plaza Sésamo Monterrey. Este proyecto fue ideado por un grupo de inversionistas regiomontanos que querían dar más opciones de diversión a los niños, pero que tuviera fácil acceso y una ubicación privilegiada, así que el lugar elegido fue Parque Fundidora, uno de los sitios más concurridos de Monterrey por los turistas. Did you know that in 1990 emerged an idea that over time became part of the touristic offering the capital city of Nuevo León has? It is the Sesame Street Park Monterrey. This project was imagined by a group of investors from Nuevo León who wanted to give more recreational options to children, but which would be of easy access and with a privileged location, so Fundidora Park was the place chosen. The park has a surface of ten hectares, meaning an enormous space with attractions for all tastes and ages: in Aquaworld, there are swimming-pools, splash-pools, waterslides, and water activities; in VillaSesame, you can ride thrilling attractions; Adventure Island has two huge wave pools; the place also offers several shows to be in no rush, in a relaxed recreational atmosphere. It also includes 17 party rooms with air conditioning, each one of them setup differently, but they all have in common shows, piñatas and food combos, among other amenities. El desierto está vivo Esculturas naturales y pozas de agua
El Pueblo Mágico de Cuatrociénegas está a 80 kilómetros de Monclova, Coahuila, y su nombre se debe a los muchísimos manantiales que formaron estanques de agua en medio del desierto. Un lugar que conocí es la Mina de Mármol, está a 23 kilómetros de Cuatrociénegas y dejó de ser explotada desde 1994, año en que la zona fue decretada Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna. ¡Parecen las ruinas de un castillo antiguo, con muros verticales impresionantes! Algo importante que aprendí es que donde está Coahuila era el Mar de Tetis, hace millones de años, y debido al movimiento de las placas tectónicas las rocas marinas del fondo del mar se plegaron y formaron los desiertos color blanco, pozas, ríos de agua transparente y paredes de mármol. ¡En verdad me impactó ver tantas cosas diferentes que hizo la naturaleza en un mismo lugar!
Experiencia nocturna Algo que pocas veces puedes ver es el cosmos encima de ti, por eso es fascinante vivir un tour de noche, donde puedes ver las estrellas y la luna en medio del paisaje. Eso sí, aprovecha para tomar fotos, pues es una oportunidad única. Lo mejor de todo es que hay varias opciones de hacer el recorrido de forma organizada.

The Magical Town of Cuatrociénegas is located 80 kilometers of Monclova, Coahuila, and its name comes from the many natural springs that form water puddles in the middle of the desert. A place I got to know is the Marble Mine, located 23 kilometers from Cuatrociénegas, and which stopped being a mine in 1994, the year the zone was declared a Flora and Fauna Protected Area. They look like the ruins of an old castle, with impressive vertical walls!
Something you can rarely see is the cosmos above you, that’s why it is fascinating to experience a night tour, when you can see the stars and the moon in the middle of the scenery. So, of course make the most of it to take pictures, as it is a unique experience. The best of all is that there are several options to take an organized tour.
Cuatrociénegas Valley has survived five massive extinctions and several ice ages.

También se formaron lagunas que fueron evaporándose hasta que quedó la sal más pesada, que es el yeso que forma las increíbles Dunas de Yeso. Están a 16 kilómetros de Cuatrociénegas y en verdad parecen de azúcar, y por el viento constante están moviéndose todo el tiempo; vi cómo cambia el paisaje poco a poco y el suelo se convierte en una fina arena de color blanco. Otra cosa increíble es que al atardecer la luz crea un efecto visual, dándole a las dunas un color rojo, rosa o naranja, según la hora y la perspectiva desde donde las veas.

Something important I learned is the fact that the area where Coahuila is currently located, used to be the Tetis Sea, millions of years ago, and that because of the tectonic plates’ movement, the water rocks at the bottom of the sea folded to form the white colored deserts, natural pools, clear water rivers and marble walls. It really impacted me to see so many different things made by nature in one same place! Ponds also formed and evaporated over time, until the heaviest salt remained, which is the gypsum that forms the stunning Gypsum

El Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna Cuatrociénegas tiene Estromatolitos; o sea, son los generadores de oxígeno de hace más de 3,500 millones de años, todavía están en el río y son la base de la cadena alimenticia de caracoles, moluscos y peces. Por eso no dejes basura y, con esa acción tan simple, ayudas a la continuidad de la vida de este oasis.
The Cuatrociénegas Flora and Fauna Protected Area has Stromatolites; in other words, these are the oxygen generators that were present more than 3,500 millions of years ago, they are still in the river, and they are the basis of snails, mollusks and fish’s food chain. For that reason do not litter, and with this simple act, you help preserving the continuity of life in this oasis.

Otro lugar que me dejó impactado es la Poza Azul. Queda a menos de 10 kilómetros del Pueblo Mágico. Es, a lo mejor, el agua más cristalina que he visto, y aunque está en medio del desierto, es un sitio lleno de plantas, insectos y peces. ¡Te sientes más vivo que nunca en ese lugar! Dunes. They are located 16 kilometers from Cuatrociénegas and they really look like they were made of sugar, and because of the steady winds, they are constantly moving. I saw how the landscape changes little by little and how the soil becomes a thin white sand. Another amazing thing is at sunset, when the light creates a visual effect giving the dunes a red, pink or orange color, depending on the time of the day and on the angle from which you see it. Another place which left me speechless is Poza Azul. It is less than 10 kilometers from the Magical Town. It is maybe the clearest water I have ever seen, and although it is in the middle of the desert, it’s a site full of plants, insects and fish. You feel more alive than ever in this place!

Este año el Centro de Rehabilitación Teletón Occidente (CRIT) cumple 18 años de acompañar a niños y jóvenes en su inclusión a la sociedad para que hagan una vida normal dentro de sus condiciones.
This year, the Western Telethon Center of Rehabilitation (CRIT) reaches 18 years of supporting children and young people in their inclusion into society, so they can have a normal life with their condition.

Un Jalisco más incluyente Muchas manos por un objetivo
Cuando la gente llega a CRIT Occidente se siente bien recibida: es un edificio colorido que no da la sensación de ser una clínica. La recepción tiene forma de tren, porque ahí empieza la vía de la rehabilitación; en una pared está el lema de la institución: ‘El amor y la ciencia al servicio de la vida’; el directorio está ilustrado con pictogramas, pues algunos pacientes no saben leer o son muy tímidos y es mejor decirles: “Nos vemos en El Arca”, en lugar de: “Nos vemos en el Centro de Estimulación Multisensorial”. En este centro de rehabilitación infantil para pacientes de 6 a 18 años de edad que tienen discapacidad neurológica, muscular o esquelética, cada paciente es valorado por un grupo interdisciplinario de terapeutas que les traza objetivos; durante su proceso aprenden y aplican herramientas para ser lo más independientes posible de su familia o tutores.
Amor y arte Amarte, Arte Incluyente es una iniciativa que consiste en que los niños hagan una obra usando su creatividad en conjunto con reconocidos artistas plásticos como Scott Neri, Juan Carlos Manjarrez o Nino Magaña; los cuadros son subastados y los fondos obtenidos son para CRIT Occidente. Este año se exhibieron 40 piezas en el Museo de las Artes y se subastarán el 18 de abril. Cada jueves Patitas de Ayuda lleva perros entrenados para que los niños interactúen con ellos y trabajen su estimulación.
Every Thursday, Patitas de Ayuda brings in trained dogs so that the children interact with them and work on their stimulation.
Love and art Amarte, Arte Incluyente (Loving you, Inclusive Art) is an initiative which consists in having the children make a work of art together with renowned plastic artists such as Scott Neri, Juan Carlos Manjarrez or Nino Magaña; the paintings are auctioned and the funds obtained are in benefit of CRIT Occidente. This year, 40 works were exhibited at the Museum of the Arts and they will be auctioned on April 18th.
A more inclusive Jalisco Many hands for a goal
When people come to CRIT Occidente, they feel well received: it is a colorful building which doesn’t give the impression of being a clinic. The front desk is in the shape of a train, since it is there where rehabilitation life begins; on a wall is the institution motto: ‘Love and science at the service of life’; the building directory is illustrated with pictograms, as some patients don’t read or are very shy and it’s better to tell them “I’ll see you in The Arch”, instead of “I’ll see you in the Multisensorial Stimulation Center”.

CRIT Occidente atiende mil citas diarias y, al año, a 2,500 familias; los pacientes tienen un tiempo de estancia de 3 a 3.5 años y se les evalúa con un instrumento llamado Weefim que abarca 18 aspectos de la vida de la persona. El equipo de trabajo lo forman 156 colaboradores contratados, entre médicos, terapeutas, psicólogos, trabajadores sociales, personal administrativo y de mantenimiento, más un grupo de voluntarios que dona parte de su tiempo a favor de la causa. La tecnología en CRIT Occidente permite dar un servicio de excelencia: el paciente se registra mediante un código de barras y recibe atención del médico; la información queda guardada en su historial y así checan su avance. In this children rehabilitation center for patients from 6 to 18 years old who have a neurological, muscular or bone disability, every patient is diagnosed by an interdisciplinary group of therapists who set goals. During their process, they learn and apply tools to be as independent as possible from their family or tutors. CRIT Occidente deals with one thousand appointments daily, and 2,500 families annually. Patients have a stay of between 3 and 3.5 years and are evaluated with a tool called Weefin, which covers 18 aspects of a person’s life. The work team is composed of 156 hired collaborators, between doctors, therapists, psychologists, social workers, administrative and maintenance staff, plus a group of volunteers who give part of their time in benefit of the cause. Technology at CRIT Occidente allows to give an excellent service: the patient is registered thtough a code bar and receives assistance from a doctor; the information is kept in his record and this is how her progress is reviewed. The areas of genetics, ophthalmology, urology, x-rays, pulmonary rehabilitation, orthopedic pediatrics, neurology, pedopsychiatry, human communication, odontology, nursing and paramedics, have top quality equipment; the physical therapy gym possesses a touch, smell and color stimulation center; there is a cutting edge robot which simulates the patient’s walking pattern, and in the backyard can be found a sand floor, a corrugated area, rocks and stairs, where they practice like in real life.

Guadalajara Las terapias están disfrazadas de juego, para que los pequeños las hagan con más gusto. Hay baños familiares para que la persona con discapacidad entre con quien lo acompaña. La alberca terapéutica está a 32º C, tiene efecto relajante y les ayuda a moverse mejor; los niños entran con su papá o mamá, y el terapeuta les explica cómo hacer los ejercicios. A propósito, el agua es reusada para baños o riego. También está la recreación de una vivienda –con sala, comedor, cocina, baño- para que el paciente aprenda a moverse allí y sepa usar los enseres de la vida diaria de forma individual. Y creó el exitoso programa Club Amigo Teletón, en el cual el paciente sale seis sábados seguidos –al cine, a un concierto o al centro comercial- con un voluntario y así socializa más allá de su familia.
Therapies are disguised into games, so that the little ones follow them more eagerly. There are family restrooms so that people with disabilities can enter with someone to assist them. The therapeutic pool is at 32°C, has a relaxing effect and helps them to move better; children enter with their mom or dad, and the therapist explains to them how to do the exercises. By the way, the water is reused for toilet flush or for watering. There is also a recreated residence –with a living room, a dining room, a kitchen, and a bathroom- in order for the patient to learn how to move around and to use daily life essentials individually. The center also created the successful Telethon Friend Club program, in which the patient goes out six Saturdays in a row –to the movies, to a concert or to the mall- with a volunteer, and thus socialize beyond his own family.

En CRIT Occidente no existen prejuicios hacia otras ideologías, pues tiene compromiso con la no discriminación y está por certificarse en la Norma 25, que reúne todo acerca del tema. Por cierto, en cuanto a certificaciones, el Consejo General de Salud lo certificó en instalaciones y servicios hace siete años, haciendo la renovación cada tres años; y el CARF, una institución americano-canadiense que certifica a centros de rehabilitación a nivel mundial, también le dio la certificación. Es importante decir que, de acuerdo a la Organización Mundial de la Salud, México tiene 250 mil niños con discapacidad, mientras que el Sistema CRIT abarca a 27 mil familias. Se requiere diez veces más recursos, así que la institución seguirá mejorando el nivel atención y calidad con conocimiento, capacitación, buenas prácticas, tecnología y planes de negocios para generar recursos. At CRIT Occidente there are no prejudices towards other ideologies, since it is engaged against discrimination and is about to be certified by Norm 25, which includes everything about the topic. By the way, regarding certifications, the General Council of Health certified the center’s facilities and services seven years ago, renewing it every three years; and the CARF, a Canadian-American institution which certifies rehabilitation centers worldwide, also gave the center its certification. It is important to mention that, according the World Health Organization, Mexico has 250 thousand children with a disability, whereas the CRIT System covers 27 thousand families. Ten times more resources are needed, so the institution will continue improving the level of care and quality, through knowledge, training, good practices, technology and business plans to generate resources.

Transparencia de un esfuerzo “La campaña ‘Ven, conoce y pregunta’ tiene como objetivo posicionar a Teletón en el corazón de los mexicanos como una institución transparente, confiable y enfocada a resultados”, indica José Ruiloba Madero, Director General de CRIT Occidente, “porque se levantaron críticas infundadas contra el proyecto, pero es un tema de percepción porque Televisa no es dueña de Teletón, sino que cada año difunde el evento durante 25 horas al tener la infraestructura adecuada. Todo el dinero va a la Fundación Teletón, es para equipar y abrir nuevos centros -aunque cada centro es responsable de su operación- y en la página web aparecen a detalle los estados financieros”, explica.

Nació en Guadalajara, Jalisco, en 2002 y ha un privilegio compartir tenido la suerte de “ser la mexicana más joven de con el público”. la historia que toca con orquesta. Musical essence Pianist Daniela Liebman has known what her life path would be since she was a little girl: “I have practiced since I was five years old, performed in public when I was seven, competed when I was 9, I started to take it seriously!” she explains. She was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco in 2002 and has had the chance to “become the youngest Mexican to perform in an orchestra in history. This drew the attention of the press and gave me the opportunity to share music and my ideas with people. This is what I like to do the most!” she joyfully chats. Because of her interpreting quality, she has been called a ‘Prodigy Child’ and her repertoire includes works of Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms and Manuel M. Ponce. She has given recitals at the Ravinia Festival, at the Kravis Center for Performing Arts and at the Cleveland Museum of Modern Art. She has played with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Jalisco, the Rachmaninov Orchestra of the Kremlin of Moscow and the National Symphonic Orchestra
of Columbia. She won first place at La noche en Madrid in Spain in 2011, at the Lang Lang Junior Music Camp Competition in Munich in 2013 and at the Piano Texas International Academy in the United States in 2017. She is represented internationally by the Park Avenue Artists agency in New York. Family life is key to her career progress. “My dad is a violinist, when I was three he bought me an electric piano and taught me how to play; he covers the musical area and often travels with me. My mom helped me a lot, she picks my dresses and is always there”, she shares; additionally, her professional training is constant: she has taken master lessons with Leonard Slatkin, Paul Badura-Skoda and Federico Osorio, and currently studies with Tamás Ungár, in Dallas Fort Worth, Texas. “It was necessary to move as it is what helps me the most as a musician, and although I miss Mexico a lot, I try to visit as much as I can. I love the warmth of the people, the food and the weather. It’s my home!” she expresses.

El concepto casual de este restaurante requirió casi un año de trabajo, tiempo en que fueron integradas las ideas de los dueños, en conjunto con arquitectos e interioristas, para crear una terraza con una atmósfera donde la gente se sienta bien recibida, en la zona financiera de Guadalajara, el lugar más trendy de la ciudad. La cocina implicó todo un scouting para tener a la pizza como eje del menú: el horno Acunto de leña fue traído de Nápoles, así que tiene la clásica forma de bóveda, y la harina también es de allá. Hay sabores desde muy tradicionales hasta otros más modernos; luego son horneadas a 350oC, con el tiempo preciso de cocción. A propósito, la UNESCO nombró a la pizza napolitana Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad, en 2017.
Neapolitan mood in Guadalajara The casual concept of this restaurant required almost a year of work, during which were integrated the owners’ ideas, along with architects and interior designers, in order to create a terrace with an atmosphere where people feel well received, in Guadalajara’s financial district, the trendiest area of the city. The kitchen involved a lot of scouting in order to make pizza the axis of the menu: the Acunto wood-fire oven was brought from Naples, so it has the classic shape of a vault, and the flour is also from there. Here are flavors from very traditional to others more modern, they are then baked at 350°C, with a precise heating duration. By the way, UNESCO named the Neapolitan pizza Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017.

The name comes from the last name Gamboa, they intended to make it sound Italian and plural, as it is a family project, so the result is: Gambino’s, a brothers cuisine.
El nombre viene del apellido Gamboa, buscaron que se escuchara italiano y que fuera en plural, pues es un proyecto familiar, así que el resultado es: Gambino´s cocina de hermanos. El menú de Gambino´s fue ideado para servirlo al centro de la mesa para compartirlo con los amigos y probar distintos sabores, en un mood de convivencia; también ofrece creaciones veganas porque es una tendencia saludable y, si alguien es alérgico al gluten, es posible adaptar el platillo. Las bebidas fueron pensadas para complementar el concepto: tiene diez tipos de cerveza artesanal -dando apoyo a los fabricantes locales-, junto a marcas comerciales e importadas, así como una amplia barra para preparar cocteles de temporada. Además, los jueves es de DJ y hay planes para ofrecer brunch time, platillos especiales y menús temáticos. Gambino’s menu was conceived to be served to the center of the table to be shared among friends for the tasting of different flavors, in a “sharing” mood; it also offers vegan creations, since it is a healthy trend, and if someone is allergic to gluten, the dish can be adapted. The drinks were conceived to complement the concept: they have ten kinds of handcraft beer –supporting the local producers-, along with commercial and imported brands, as well as a wide bar to prepare seasonal cocktails. Additionally, there is a DJ set on Thursdays, and they are planning on offering brunch time, specials and theme menus.

Para Xavier López Ancona, Presidente y Fundador de KidZania, “es un sueño llevar KidZania a Guadalajara, donde cerca de un millón 200 mil niños están ávidos de diversión y educación, de prepararse para tener un mundo mejor. Es un reto por la inversión de 250 millones de pesos y abriremos en octubre, recibiendo 400 mil visitantes al año, entre: escuelas, niños con sus papás y festejos de cumpleaños”. Es un concepto infantil 100% mexicano con actividades basadas en jugar a ser adultos dentro de una ciudad a escala donde hay: hospital, estación de bomberos, salón de belleza, banco, supermercado y agencia de autos. Es un producto que atrae a muchos turistas, pues “cuando los niños visitan a sus amigos o familia en otras ciudades, ¡KidZania es una visita obligada!”, señala el empresario.

Con 19 años, Óscar compitió en 2016 en el Pan Pacific Jr., en Maui, Hawái; en 2016-2017 fue el segundo mejor nadador nacional en las pruebas de 400, 800 y 1,500 libre y hoy busca clasificar para los Juegos Panamericanos porque “quiero llegar al menos a dos ciclos Olímpicos”. Jorge, de 17 años, participó en 2017 en el Mundial Jr., en Indianápolis, Estados Unidos; es el cuarto mejor nadador nacional en la categoría 400 metros combinado, anhela participar en los Juegos Olímpicos de la Juventud 2018, en Buenos Aires, Argentina, y en los Juegos Centroamericanos 2018, pues para él “representar a México significa triunfar en el deporte; debo dar el mejor resultado, ¡porque podemos ser una potencia deportiva!”.
Sus inicios en la natación fueron en Nelson Vargas Interlomas, en la capital del país y, actualmente, se preparan en Acuática Nelson Vargas Family Fitness, en Guadalajara.

Sports potential The Cárdenas brothers got to swimming by accident: Óscar broke his collar bone when he was two years old, the orthopedist recommended swimming, and he liked it very much; also, Jorge would join him, enjoying himself in the pool.
Óscar, 19 years old, competed in 2016 in the Pan Pacific Jr. in Maui, Hawaii; in 2016-2017, he was the second best national swimmer in the 400, 800 and 1,500 freestyle trials, and today he is trying to qualify for the Pan Americans Games, as “I want to
participate to at least two Olympic cycles”. Jorge, 17 years old, participated in 2017 in the World Jr. in Indianapolis, United States; he is the 4th best national swimmer in the 400 meter medley category; he wishes to participate in the
Youth Olympic Games 2018, in Buenos Aires Argentina, and in the Central American Games 2018, since according to him “representing Mexico means triumphing in sport; I have to get the best result, because we can be a sports power!”

The Irish in Guadalajara Businessmen from Guadalajara, the Irish community in Guadalajara and the representatives of prestigious universities gathered to celebrate Saint Patrick, the saint of Ireland, on March the 17th.
The celebration was also to support the Guadalajara Clubhouse Monumental and the Foundation Iyari Alba AC (FIA), which supports the Huichol community. There was traditional Irish music, a DJ and an auction of Wixárika art. By the way, in this country is remembered Saint Patrick’s Battalion, because Irish immigrants joined the Mexican Army to fight against the United States from 1846 to 1847.
