Mexican Sports car “Checo” Pérez, a fast trajectory // One of the young talents that shines internationally and that is giving a good name to Mexico is the racecar pilot Checo Perez that was properly named “Mexico´s prodigious child” by the media. The young pilot from Guadalajara, Jalisco who is barely 22 years old holds a very long list of accomplishments which make it an honor for Viva Mexico to have captured Checo Perez´s impressions. How have the past two years been? “ Incredible! It has been like a rollercoaster. I have gone through everything: bad experiences, such as my accident in Monaco last year, or this year when in Belgium I was in fourth place and an accident left us stranded on the first lap. But, without a doubt, the highlight of this season has been the three podiums we have so far, even in races where we started off at the end. These has been very intensive years, but it has all been worth it.” Entonces, ¿estás conforme con lo obtenido? “Estoy satisfecho. Lo obtenido hasta hoy es el resultado de muchos años de esfuerzo y sacrificios, por eso me siento contento. Pero eso no me tiene conforme, tengo muchas metas que cumplir aún. Sé que voy por buen camino para alcanzarlas”. So, are you happy with the results? “I´m satisfied. What we have achieved today is the result of many years of effort and sacrifice that is why I feel happy. But that does not satisfied with this; I still have many more goals to achieve. I know I am on the right track to reaching them.” Which has been the hardest moment for you in these two years? “When I left my house to live in Germany. I was only fourteen years old. In the beginning, I thought it would all be easy and that I would be in Formula 1 in a short time. When I arrived there, I realized that everything was really different to Mexico. “I lived in a restaurant many months without speaking the language. In some occasions some things that happened to me made me think of coming back. But, my desire to continue with my career was always stronger tan my desire to come back. “ “But every time I come back to Mexico, I enjoy it so much more. I would never change my home to anywhere else in the world. “ What would you change of these two years at Formula 1? “Truthfully, I don´t think anything. It has all been useful to learn and to overcome mistakes, even when luck is not with you at the races. In motoring there is nothing to be done when a part of the car fails or when a pilot ruins your race. Nevertheless, it is the bad experiences the ones that make you better in the track, they make you mature. In my opinion, good results are the sum of all the bad ones, but we should never give up.”
“I want Mexicans to feel the pride I feel when representing my country”
What inspires you from Mexico? “The warmth from Mexican people is unique. There is no place like this in the world. That inspires me to give by best since I know that each triumph means so much. When I go to the racetrack I like to see Mexican flags everywhere. Sometimes these are taken there by Mexicans who have traveled many miles to see me but also people from other parts of the world give me their support.”

en ocasiones me pasaban cosas que me hacían pensar en regresar, pero las ganas de seguir con mi carrera siempre fueron más grandes que mis ganas de estar de vuelta. Por eso disfruto mucho cada vez que vuelvo a México, nunca cambiaria mi casa por cualquier parte del mundo”.
El joven piloto originario de Guadalajara, Jalisco, con apenas 22 años de edad, cuenta en su historia profesional con una muy larga lista de logros, por lo cual es un honor tener entre las páginas de la revista Viva México las impresiones del “Checo” Pérez.
¿Que cambiarias de estos dos años en F1? “La verdad creo que nada. Todo me ha servido para aprender y superar los errores, incluso cuando la suerte no esta conmigo en algunas carreras. En el automovilismo no hay nada que hacer cuando alguna pieza del carro falla o cuando algún piloto te arruina la carrera; sin embargo, son las malas experiencias las que te hacen ser mejor en la pista, te hacen madurar. Para mi los buenos resultados son la suma de todos los malos, por eso nunca hay que darse por vencido”.
¿Cómo han sido los dos años más recientes? “¡Increíbles! Como una montaña rusa: he tenido de todo, malas experiencias, como mi accidente en Mónaco el año pasado, o este año, cuando salía de cuarto en Bélgica y un accidente nos dejó parados en la primera vuelta. Pero, sin duda, lo más sobresaliente esta temporada hasta ahora han sido los tres podios que llevamos, partiendo desde atrás en carreras muy complicadas. Han sido dos años muy intensos, pero todo ha valido la pena”. Entonces, ¿estás conforme con lo obtenido? “Estoy satisfecho. Lo obtenido hasta hoy es el resultado de muchos años de esfuerzo y sacrificios, por eso me siento contento. Pero eso no me tiene conforme, tengo muchas metas que cumplir aún. Sé que voy por buen camino para alcanzarlas”. ¿Cuál ha sido el momento más duro para ti en estos años de tu carrera? “Cuando me fui de mi casa para vivir en Alemania, sólo tenia catorce años. Al principio creía que sería todo muy fácil, pensaba que en poco tiempo estaría en Fórmula 1. Cuando llegué al país me di cuenta que todo era muy distinto a México. Viví en un restaurante por varios meses sin saber el idioma,

“Quiero que los mexicanos sientan el orgullo que siento representando al país”. ¿Qué te inspira de México? “La calidez de los mexicanos es única, no hay un sitio parecido en el mundo. Eso me inspira a darlo todo, sé que cada triunfo significa mucho. Cuando voy a la pista me gusta ver banderas de México por todas partes, algunas ocasiones llevadas por los mexicanos que viajan muchos kilómetros para verme, pero también por la gente de cualquier parte del mundo que me apoya. Eso me inspira mucho para dar lo mejor, siento una gran responsabilidad, quiero que todos los mexicanos sientan el orgullo que yo siento representando al país”.

La modernidad de Guadalajara queda enmarcada por su bello pasado // Urbe progresista y siempre dinámica, la capital de Jalisco vive enmarcada en la magnificencia arquitectónica que le caracteriza desde su fundación, el 14 de febrero de 1542. Guadalajara ha protagonizado batallas, movimientos sociales y religiosos, y su historia está escrita en los edificios coloniales y neoclásicos que forman el centro de la ciudad. Estas construcciones son enormes cofres de cantera –piedra porosa, distintiva del occidente mexicano- que salvaguardan invaluables tesoros artísticos, históricos y culturales de la ciudad más mexicana. Basta caminar por las calles del corazón tapatío y ser sorprendido en cada esquina o en
insospechados rincones por edificaciones de tal refinamiento, que le dieron a Guadalajara el apelativo de Ciudad Conventual. La construcción más conocida es la Catedral, cuya historia es poética: el obispo Aranda y Carpintero comía en un plato con unas torres góticas europeas y de ahí surgió la idea de construir los remates actuales. La enorme iglesia es centro de una cruz formada por cuatro señoriales plazas: al oeste se encuentra Plaza Guadalajara, antes llamada de Los Laureles, ya que en sus jardines crecen estos árboles que integran naturaleza, arquitectura y ciudadanos; al este, está la Plaza de la Liberación, nombrada así porque exhibir una escultura que representa a

Miguel Hidalgo rompiendo las cadenas de la esclavitud; al norte está ubicada la Rotonda de los Jaliscienses Ilustres, rodeada por estatuas de bronce de los hijos pródigos del estado; y al sur está la Plaza de Armas, la más bella de este conjunto de espacios por conjuntar el afrancesamiento del gobierno porfirista y las proporciones propias de las plazas mexicanas. A unos pasos está el Templo de la Asunción, que ilustra la belleza y prominencia ornamental del estilo Churrigueresco, también llamado o barroco mexicano y, claro, imposible pasar de largo por Palacio de Gobierno: majestuoso representante de la arquitectura civil, cuya fachada en dos niveles refleja la dignidad del edificio, acorde a sus funciones. Entrar en dicho recinto es revivir el pasado: allí residió Miguel Hidalgo y también Benito Juá-
rez, quien estuvo a punto de ser asesinado por los reaccionarios, y hoy exhibe la obra fotográfica del escritor Juan Rulfo. A unas calles, surge del horizonte tapatío una obra maestra de la arquitectura colonial, que su función inicial fue albergar a niños huérfanos y personas desamparadas. Su nombre era Casa de la Misericordia y hoy es conocido como Hospicio Cabañas, creación de Manuel Tolsá: es un espacio cultural de primer orden para México y tiene plasmada en su cúpula, a juicio de la crítica artística internacional, la mejor creación del muralista José Clemente Orozco: “El hombre de fuego”. La lista de bellezas es larga y cortas son las palabras para describir a una Guadalajara abundante en riqueza arquitectónica que cautiva a los mismos mexicanos y, por supuesto, al visitante extranjero.

The heart of a capital carved in quarry The modernity of Guadalajara has been framed by its beautiful past

// The capital of Jalisco is a dynamic and progressive city that lives surrounded by the architectonic magnificence that is one of its main characteristics since its foundation on February 14, 1542. Guadalajara has been the venue of battles, social and religious movements, and its history is written in the colonial and neoclassic buildings that make up the center of the city. These constructions are huge trunks of quarry –porous stone, a distinguishing feature of the Mexican west, where invaluable artistic, historic and cultural treasures are preserved in the most Mexican city. We just have to walk along the streets of the Tapatío center to be surprised that on every unexpected corner there are such refined buildings that made of Guadalajara the Conventual City. The best known construction therein is the Cathedral, whose history is picturesque: the bishop Aranda y Carpintero was eating was eating on a plate with European gothic towers and so the thought of the

current riveting. The enormous church is the center of a cross made by four majestic squares: to the west, is Plaza Guadalajara, previously called Plaza de los Laureles, since it has these trees at the center integrating architecture, nature and citizens; to the east, is the Plaza de la Liberación that receives this name because it displays a sculpture of Miguel Hidalgo breaking the chains of slavery; to the north is the Rotonda de los Jalisciences Ilustres, surrounded by bronze statues of remarkable people from the state; and to the south is the Plaza de Armas which is the most beautiful square of this set since it combines the French style of the Porfirian Government and the style of the Mexican squares. A few steps away from the Cathedral is the Templo de la Asunción, which illustrates the beauty and prominence of the Churrigueresque style ornaments, also called Mexican Barroque and of course, it is impossible to miss the Palacio de Govierno: majestic representative of the civil architecture.
Its façade reflects in two levels the dignity of the building, according to its functions. Walking into this building means to revive the past: there lived Miguel Hidalgo and also Benito Juarez, who was about to be murdered by the reactionaries. Today, the building exhibits the photography works of the writer Juan Rulfo. Some streets away, you can see in the horizon a colonial, architectural master piece. The function of this building is to provide shelter to homeless people. Its name is Casa de la Misericordia and today it is known as Hospicio Cabañas, creation of Manuel Tolsá: it is a first class cultural space for Mexico and in its cupule it has the Hombre de Fuego, the best work of the muralist Jose Clemente Orozco, as per the opinion of the experts. The list is long and there are not enough words to describe a Guadalajara full of architectural wealth that captivates the Mexican people and of course, the foreign visitors.

1 Empresa y gobierno crEan mancuerna a favor de Tlaquepaque // Con el objetivo de seguir detonando a Tlaquepaque como un municipio turístico, Mauricio Preciado Navarro, Director de Desarrollo Económico y Turismo de Tlaquepaque, se reunió con empresarios de la Cámara de Comercio Tlaquepaque-Tonalá para invitarlos a realizar proyectos en conjunto a favor de la entidad porque “si empresarios y gobierno juntamos ideas, iniciativas y recursos podremos avanzar mucho y haremos una promoción más adecuada para Tlaquepaque”, exteriorizó. Así, el pasado 24 de octubre fueron realizadas mesas de trabajo del Comité de Planeación para el Desarrollo Municipal, en las cuales diversos empresarios expusieron sus proyectos. Es esencial dar a conocer que una vía para fortalecer el turismo en Tlaquepaque es el Club de Producto: un organismo de reciente formación integrado por hoteleros, comerciantes y empresarios que trabaja de la mano con la Oficina de Visitantes y Convenciones del Fideicomiso de Turismo. Entre las metas planteadas durante la iniciativa está lograr que prestadores de servicios, comerciantes, restauranteros, artesanos y hoteleros se integren a los proyectos.
1 Businessmen and government team up in favor of Tlaquepaque // With the objective of making Tlaquepaque a tourist municipality, Mauricio Preciado Navarro, Director of Economic Development and Tourism of Tlaquepaque, met with businessmen from the Tlaquepaque-Tonalá Chamber of Commerce. The purpose was to invite them to create joint projects in favor of the municipality with the idea that “if businessmen and government join ideas, initiatives and resources, progress will be greater and we will make a more adequate promotion of Tlaquepaque”, as Preciado Navarro said. For that reason, on October 24 the Municipality Development Planning Committee formed work-groups where several businessmen presented their projects. It is important to mention that a way of strengthening tourism in Tlaquepaque is through the Product Club, which was recently formed by hotel owners, shopkeepers and businessmen that work with the Visitors Office and Tourism Trust fund Convention. Amongst the goals set during this initiative of having service lenders, shop keepers, restaurant owners, craftsmen and hotel owners to become integrated into the projects.

// Durante el evento “Con desarrollo turístico Jalisco está mejor”, realizado en el Museo Interpretativo Guachimontones, en Teuchitlán, el pasado 23 de octubre, Emilio González Márquez, Gobernador del Estado de Jalisco, hizo hincapié en que el turismo es más fuerte que nuca, ya que a lo largo de su administración llevó a cabo proyectos para atraer inversionistas, perfeccionar el trabajo de prestadores de servicios y captar el interés de turistas mexicanos y extranjeros. Señaló que gracias al compromiso entre el gobierno y los empresarios del rubro turismo, Jalisco no contaría con las opciones que ofrece, ya que la entidad “en dos

Renovation of Downtown Guadalajara in order to attract tourism

Likewise, there are two other hotel projects from the NH hotel chain that is looking to get installed in this area. They will be occupying classic remodeled buildings, which they want to preserve. Between both projects this amounts to 240 more rooms, although, as López Rocha commented on, the Downtown area can allow up to 1,000 more rooms.

It also recognized the contributions done by sports and entertainment personalities, such as Lorena Ochoa, Alejandro Fernández or Javier Hernández that made them true Tourist Ambassadors of Jalisco.
