NAVAL AIR STATION CORPUS CHRISTI

MISSION AND VISION

The mission of Naval Air Station, Corpus Christi, Texas, is to provide the best possible service and facilities to our customers with pride. Our function is to maintain and operate facilities, and provide service and material, to support operations of aviation facilities and units of the Naval Air Training Command and other tenant activities and units.

We will complete our mission through clear and concise communication and continual pursuit of improvement. We will optimize the use of our diverse workforce and air station resources to support tenant commands, and regional goals and objectives.

Our overall command assignment is pilot training. e Chief of Naval Air Training (CNATRA), headquartered

here, oversees the training operation throughout the Southeast Region, from Texas to Florida. Under CNATRA's command are five training air wings, 16 training squadrons, more than 14,000 Navy and civilian personnel, the Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Naval Aviation Schools Command and the National Museum of Naval Aviation. Established in August 1971, the Naval Air Training Command moved to its present headquarters in July 1972.

Training Air Wing Four (TW-4) was established in March 1972. It is comprised of four individual units: Training Squadrons Twenty-seven (VT-27), Twenty-eight (VT-28), irty-one (VT31) and irty-five (VT-35). VT-27 and VT-28 are two of five primary training squadrons (the other three are located

at Whiting Field in Milton, Fla.). ey fly the T-6B Texan II, a single-engine turbo-prop, two-seat, basic training aircraft. VT-31 and VT-35 provide advanced multi-engine training in the T-44A King Air. VT-31 is also responsible for intermediate phase flight training for future E-2C Hawkeye and C-2A Greyhound pilots. VT-35 was established as a Joint Advanced Multi-engine Training Squadron in October 1999. e historic establishment was the first time that a Navy squadron was formed under the command of a United States Air Force officer. Until 2013, when Air Force student pilot training ended in TW-4, command of the squadron alternated annually between the Air Force and Navy.

Other aircraft aboard the Naval Air Station include Army helicopters that are re-worked and tested, as well as the P-3 Orion, flown by US Customs and Border Protection.

e largest tenant command at NAS Corpus Christi is the Corpus Christi Army Depot (CCAD). CCAD occupies

nearly 140 acres leased from the station and is the largest industrial employer in South Texas. Established in 1961 as a relatively small maintenance facility for fixed-wing aircraft, CCAD has evolved into the Army's largest helicopter repair, overhaul and maintenance center.

Other major tenants at NAS Corpus Christi include the United States Marine Aviation Training Support Group; and the United States Customs and Border Protection Service. In all, there are more than 40 tenant commands and activities located on board the station.

HISTORY

The official step leading to the construction of the Naval Air Station was initiated by the 75th Congress in 1938. A board found that a lack of training facilities capable of meeting an emergency demand for pilots constituted a grave situation. They recommended the establishment of a second air

training station and that it be located on Corpus Christi Bay.

NAS Corpus Christi was commissioned by its first skipper, Captain Alva Bernhard, on March 12, 1941. The first flight training started on May 5, 1941. Former President George H.W. Bush was the youngest pilot to graduate -- graduating in June 1943 and commissioned just three days before his 19th birthday.

In 1941, 800 instructors provided training for more than 300 cadets a month. e training rate nearly dou-

bled after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. By the end of World War II, more than 35,000 Naval aviators had earned their wings here. Corpus Christi was the only primary, basic and advanced training facility in existence in the United States. At one time it was the largest pilot training facility in the world.

Today, the training program is much longer, approximately 18 months, due to the increased complexity of today’s aircraft. Currently, Training Air Wing FOUR produces approximately 600 newly qualified aviators each year.

NEWCOMER INFORMATION

Pre-planning is essential for newcomers moving to the Corpus Christi area, whether for a permanent change of station, or student assignment to the Training Wing.

Military families are encouraged to contact the Housing Welcome Center at (361) 961-3336 or DSN 861-3336 as soon as orders are received. e Housing staff will help you locate suitable and affordable housing in the local area.

Temporary quarters can be arranged by contacting either the Navy Lodge or the Combined Bachelor Housing Office which also arranges permanent onbase quarters for single military personnel. Reservations can be made at the Navy Lodge by calling (800) NAVY_INN; or (361) 939-663. e Combined Bachelor Housing office can be reached at (361) 961-2380, or DSN 861-2380.

Newcomers are also encouraged to contact their local Personal Property office as soon as possible after receiving orders to arrange for shipment of household goods Once shipment dates are known, newcomers should contact the Personal Property office NAS Corpus Christi to arrange storage or delivery of household goods.

All new personnel should hear from a gaining command sponsor shortly after receiving orders. If not, contact your gaining unit and ask for your sponsor’s name and phone number. Your gaining command should also provide you a mailing address where letters can be forwarded until a permanent address can be established.

ARRIVAL

e Naval Air Station is located on the south side of Corpus Christi Bay, just before the causeway that crosses over to Padre Island. Drivers should follow Texas Highway 358/South Padre Island Drive to the NAS Drive exit (clearly marked with NAS-CCAD exit signs). e Main Gate is located one mile from the causeway bridge and is open 24 hours a day. (Ocean Drive provides a beautiful coastline ride from Corpus Christi to the base’s North Gate, but that gate is only open weekdays from 5 a.m. until 8:30 a.m., and 1:30 p.pm to 5 p.m.)

Limousine and taxi transportation, as well as city bus service, is available from the Corpus Christi International Airport to Naval Air Station Corpus Christi.

DIRECTIONS

From the Corpus Christi Airport:

Go towards the Airport Exit on International Boulevard

Turn right on service road

Take the TX-44 ramp; merge on on TX-44

From San Antonio:

CHECK-IN

Upon arriving on station, all Navy personnel assigned to the base (including student aviators) must sign in with the NAS Officer-of-the-Day office. is office is located in Building 2 and is manned 24 hours per day. All newcomers should then report to their joining command on the first work day after arrival to receive in-processing instructions.

Auto Registration and Vehicle Information

Everyone driving privately-owned automobiles aboard the station should proceed to the Security Department Pass and Tag Office, Building 1794 (adjacent to South Gate), to register their vehicle within five days after reporting aboard. Drivers must have a valid driver’s license, current automobile registration, and automobile liability insurance to file for registration.

Vehicles must also have an annual state inspection, if the state where the car is registered requires it. All vehicles manufactured after 1967 must

be equipped with seat belts. Persons may register their vehicles from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Vehicle Registration Office.

Base Driving Privileges

Operating a private motor vehicle aboard the station is a privilege extended by the Commanding Officer and is not a right. Every driver operating a vehicle on station must observe all traffic regulations. Seat belt use is mandatory at all times while operating vehicles aboard the station. Speed limits are enforced by radar, and DWI laws are enforced.

Motorcyclists must attend the Department of Defense motorcycle safety course before being issued an on-base decal. Persons operating a vehicle that belongs to someone else must have written, notarized permission from the owner stating the operator may use the vehicle.

Pass and Tag

In addition to providing vehicle registration, the Pass and Tag Office, Building 1794, furnishes identification for civilian

employees. Identification cards for both military personnel and their family members are issued by the Personnel Support Activity Detachment, Building 1730.

Everyone living on base must register all firearms with the Security Police Investigative Division. Boats, campers, and bicycles must be registered with the Pass and Tag office. All pets must have an annual rabies vaccination and be registered with the base Vet Clinic.

e new Navy Lodge, overlooking Corpus Christi Bay, provides temporary quarters at NAS Corpus Christi for military personnel and their dependents, reservists, Department of Defense employees, and retired military personnel.

NEWCOMER INFORMATION

With 52 units, each suite includes air conditioning, kitchenette, private bath, and family accommodations. It’s within easy walking distance to the Consolidated Club, a fishing pier, marina, Navy Exchange and commissary.

Reservations are accepted for all eligible personnel on an as-received basis. Once a reservation is made, it is confirmed and you cannot be bumped. Military personnel being assigned to a South Texas base on Permanent Change of Station (PCS) orders, or on Temporary Duty, can make reservations at any time. Other eligible personnel can made reservations either 60 days or 30 days in advance of arrival, depending on status.

Public Private Venture Homes

With the exception of the two Flag Officer housing units, all family housing at NAS Corpus Christi was privatized as part of the Navy’s South Texas Public Private Venture Project in February 2002.

ere are now 262 on-base units for pay grades E-1 through 0-6. Included are 157 newly constructed two, three,

fitness centers, bowling alley, Navy Exchange and Commissary, ball fields and playgrounds.

Eligible service members with families who reside in on-base PPV Housing pay rent based on the Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) which covers rent and utilities. BAH will later be adjusted by the PPV partner to include an “average” utility allowance. Residents will then become responsible for payment of their actual utility costs.

e day-to-day management, maintenance, and operations of South Texas Military Family (PPV) Housing are the responsibility of the PPV Property Management/Owner Manager. Residents should contact the private management office when they have any maintenance requests or issues/ concerns regarding their occupancy in on-base housing.

Eligibility/Application Process

e Navy Welcome Center maintains a referral list of military personnel wanting to live in on-base PPV Housing. Active-duty military with families have top priority, followed by active-duty reserve personnel with families. If excess housing exists, other categories of personnel will be eligible.

Basic eligibility for housing for active-duty personnel with families is defined as those service members with accompanying dependents. Accompanying dependents are considered to be those dependents that may be expected to reside with the sponsor for nine consecutive months or more each year. Dependents must also meet the definitions of dependents as identified in the DoD Financial Management Regulation, Vol. 7a. Questions regarding eligibility of dependents, with regards to housing, can be forwarded to the staff at the Navy Housing Welcome Center.

Applications for Housing consists of; (1) DD1746—Application for Assignment to Housing which has been completed and signed by the active-duty

member; (2) a copy of the active-duty member’s original orders; and (3) Certification of Dependent document (examples of dependent certification documents include NAVPERS 1070/603 Record of Emergency Data/ Dependency Application (Page 2); a NAVCOMPT 3072 Dependency Action Status; or a DD1172 Application for Uniformed Services Identification Card (DEERS Enrollment).

Applications may be made at any time after receipt of PCS orders and up to 30 days after reporting to new permanent duty station Control date will normally be date of detachment from last PCS. Advance application will not affect the control date of application. To obtain entry on the list, applicants must confirm their application by contacting the Navy Housing office on their detaching date or no later than 30 days after reporting to the new Personnel Detachment.

If on-base Public Private Venture Housing is not available upon arrival, the service member and the accompanying family may request referral assistance for off-base community housing and remain on the waiting list for on-base housing. Provided that certain criteria is met, the applicant may be authorized a local move at government expense

from private sector housing to on-base PPV housing. For details on eligibility, please contact the local Navy Housing Welcome Center Office.

Institutes of Higher Learning

and personal development for students focused on improving their future. As a major source of educational opportunities in South Texas, Del Mar serves some 10,000 credit and 15,000 noncredit students each year.

Coastline Community College

Located in Building 1731, Room 202, Coastline Community College is a Navy College Distance Learning Partnership program member offering rate related associates degrees. CCC awards credit for up to 40 semester hours of military training. All programs are online. CCC also has programs which provide textbooks and reduced tuition for military spouses. Del Mar College develops new programs to meet the South Texas workforce demands and makes its programs more accessible to its student population through distance learning technology and more flexible class schedule options. Del Mar College has pro vided affordable quality education for more than 65 years, touching the lives of more than half-a-million South Texas students.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is school has been located on NAS Corpus Christi since 1978 and offers Associate, Bachelor and Masters degree programs as part of the Navy College Off-Duty Education program. e undergraduate degrees offered are Professional Aeronautics,

Management of Technical Operations, Aircraft Maintenance, and Aviation Maintenance Management. Undergraduate minors are available in safety and logistics. A Master of Science degree is available in Management, and the Master of Aero nautical Science program is available with specializations in Operations, Safety and Management.

Fleet & Family Support Center exist to provide services that facilitate personal and family readiness and adaptation to life in the Navy. Its primary mission is to assist commands reach operational readiness superior performance, member retention and a reasonable quality-of-life for Navy personnel and their families. All active duty personnel and family members arriving or departing will benefit from a visit to the Center. Operating hours are Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Some of the more widely utilized and familiar programs/services are:

Counseling—Individual and marriage counseling is provided by fully credentialed and licensed counselors. Counseling is provided on a short-term basis, usually eight sessions or fewer.

Education & Training (E&T)— e goal of E&T is to prevent problems and to enrich personal and family life, en-

abling people to thrive in the Navy and achieve satisfying lives. is is accomplished through workshops, programs, briefings, and general military training given to active duty personnel and their families for the purpose of prevention and enrichment.

Family Advocacy Program (FAP)— FAP is a multidisciplinary approach to the prevention and resolution of family maltreatment.

Personal Financial Management Program—Members of the United States Navy and Marine Corps are required to be financially responsible. is program pro vides comprehensive financial education, training, and counseling. From advice on leasing or buying a home or car, to budgeting and debt management, to questions about insurance, savings, investments, or retirement, the Command Financial Specialist is the one to see.

Sexual Assault Victim Program— Sexual Assault is the most under-reported crime in our society and in the military. e Department of Defense be-

lieves its first priority is for victims to be protected, treated with dignity and respect, and to receive the medical treatment, care and counseling they deserve. Under DoD's Confidentiality Policy, sexual assault victims are offered either restricted or unrestricted reporting options. For additional information on the new reporting options or to report a sexual assault, please contact the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator, at (361) 961-1670/3722.

Transition, Goals, Plans, Success (TGPS)— is program is open to all military personnel who are either retiring or separating (under honorable conditions). Services offered to military personnel are available to spouses as well. is program is designed to make the transition into civilian life a much smoother and less stressful process.

Additional Services

Among the services offered through seminars, workshops, and one-on-one counseling is information on all aspects of new career development including how to write resumes, survive job interviews, conduct a planned job search, and other job related information. In addition, provides vital information on veteran's benefits and entitlements, educational benefits, and help available from community based resources.

Military personnel and their spouses are encouraged to begin their respective transition process 180 days prior to their scheduled separation or retirement date. Plans should be made at this time to attend a scheduled seminar prior to leaving active duty. Seminars are transition springboards that should pro vide sufficient information and guidance to assist the service member in making intelligent and meaningful decisions prior to entering the civilian world.

Family Employment Readiness Program (FERP)—is a new term to describe the Spouse Employment Assistance Program. It is designed to ease the significant problems some spouses may have in finding employment. Typical activities include counseling and job search, resume writing, Federal Resume preparations, career transitions, interviewing and career planning, and referrals to potential employers.

Ombudsman Support— is program provides training, support, and information and referral programs that contribute to the effectiveness of the Navy Family Ombudsman Program and personal well being of ombudsmen. Included are basic, advanced, and ongoing training. Support is provided via the Ombudsman Program Coordinator and other staff who can serve as consultants to discuss interventions and approaches with family issues.

Sponsor Training - A self-training program accessible on the Internet. is training will introduce you to the Navy Sponsor Program. It is designed to help

facilitate the relocation of Navy servicemembers and their families. e primary goal is to ease difficulty and reduce the apprehensions normally associated with a Permanent Charge of Station move.

Base Indoctrination - Provides an indoctrination program which familiarizes personnel reporting aboard with the mission, organization, regulations, opportunities, facilities, and services at Naval Air Station, Corpus Christi, Texas and the surrounding community.

Regional Legal Service Office SE, Branch Office Corpus Christi, provides a variety of legal services for eligible active duty personnel and their dependents and, as resources permit, eligible retired personnel and their dependents, who live in South Texas.

Services include, but are not limited to, preparation of wills, powers of attorney, landlord tenant law, notary work and legal advice on domestic relations issues. Call (361) 961-3531 for an appointment.

Naval Health Clinic Corpus Christi (NHCCC) is a multifaceted patient centered ambulatory care facility dedicated to providing first-rate care to persons entitled to healthcare according to Department of Defense (DOD) eligibility criteria. NHCC consists of the core facility located in Corpus Christi, Texas and two Naval Branch Health Clinics, located in Kingsville and Forth Worth, Texas.

Primary Care is the largest focus, with illness intervention requiring hospitalization provided through external resource sharing agreements.

In addition to its Ambulatory Health Care Accreditation, the Corpus Christi facility has a Behavioral Health Care Accreditation for our Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program (SARP). The College of American Pathologies certifies the laboratories. All accreditation standards have been met.

On February 17, 2005, Naval Health Clinic Corpus Christi successfully completed a weeklong combined survey and inspection by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organi-

Boat Storage - Includes 61 covered boat slips with lifts, SI uncovered slips and a refueling station with ethanol free gas. We have a variety of slips from 16' up to 32" that range from 3000 lbs. to 16000 lbs. lift capacity. We also have a 64 enclosed boat sheds and 130 dry storage spots in our dry storage compound.

Fishing Piers - We have 2 fishing piers. e fishing piers are lighted and have fish cleaning stations.

Sunfish Beach - Located on Corpus Christi Bay north of the Bay Club, Sunfish Beach is available for station-wide day use and private beach parties (pavilions).

Volunteer Programs - e Outdoor Recreation Adventure Connection offers a Volunteer Instructor Program (VIP) aimed at teaching recreation skills to per sons interested in increasing their knowledge about the great outdoors! If

While care for privately owned animals is very important, it is subject to availability and mission requirements. Animal care provided at the Corpus Christi Veterinary Treatment Facility is not available for civilians, reservists that are not on active duty, or reservist retired.

COMMANDS AT NAS CORPUS CHRISTI

Chief of Naval Air Training

Naval aviation has evolved dynamically sine 1910 when Eugene Ely made the first successful takeoff in an aircraft from a Navy vessel. Today, Naval Air Training Command’s squadrons log more than 400, 000 flights hours annually in seven types of training aircraft comprising more than 750 airplanes. Each year, more than 1, 800 pilots and naval flight officers pin on their “Wings of Gold.”

e responsibility for training all prospective Navy pilots, naval flight officers and enlisted aircrew members falls on the shoulders of the Chief of Naval Training, whose headquarters, Naval Air Training Command, is located at NAS Corpus Christi.

In addition, the Naval Air Training Command provides training for aircrew members from the Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, as well as several foreign countries through the Foreign Military Sales program.

e command is composed of five Training Air Wings located on five Naval Air Stations in Florida, Mississippi and Texas. e five wings are home to 16 training squadrons. In addition, joint training is conducted with the Air Force on bases in Texas, Oklahoma and Georgia. It also manages that Naval Aviation Schools Command, the Blue Angels, and the National Museum of the Naval Aviation.

Two of the Training Air Wings are located in South Texas: (1) Training Air Wing Four which is located at NAS Corpus Christi and is responsible for provid-

ing basic flight training for Navy, Marine, Air Force and Coast Guard aviators in single engine aircraft and intermediate and advanced flight training in multi-engine aircraft; and (2) Training Air Wing Two, at NAS Kingsville, which provides undergraduate jet pilot training.

Training Air Wing Four

Training Air Wing Four has been training the world’s premiere Navy pilots for more than 30 years. Located at Corpus Christi, it enjoys an ideal environment for raining... warm year round weather with lots of wide-open space.

Established in March, 1972, it is composed of four dying squadrons with a combined strength of 800 officers and enlisted personnel and more than 180 aircraft and simulators.

en (VT-27), Twenty-Eight (VT-28), irty-One (VT-31), and irty-Five (VT-35). Training Air Wing Four also has a Reserve Component composed of squadron augment units (SAU) assigned to each squadron.

Student aviators receive basic flight training in VT-27 and VT-28 flying T-34C “Turbo Mentor” aircraft or T-6B Texans. VT-31 and VT-35 provide intermediate and advanced flight training using multi-engine aircraft, the T-44A/C “Pegasus” and the TC-12 “Huron,” respectively.

Training Squadron

Twenty-Seven

Training Squadron Twenty-Seven was initially established on July 11, 1951, as Advanced Training Unit-B at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi. e command moved to Naval Air Station Kingsville in 1952 and again to Naval Air Station, New Iberia, Louisiana in 1960. It was there the squadron was redesignated as VT-27. In July 1964, the “Boomers” returned to Naval Air Station Corpus Christi where they continue to be an important member of the community.

In 1973, the squadron began a transition to the role of primary training squadron with the arrival, on Aug. 1, of the first “T-28” Trojan. By Oct. 1, 1973, the last TS-2A had departed, signifying the end of the advanced training role and the completion of the first “T-34C” Mentor aircraft. Since March 1984, when the last T-28 ever used for naval flight training departed, the T-34C has been the mainstay of the Navy and Marine Corps primary flight training.

e “Boomers” average more than 11,000 training missions a year, and more than 70 sorties per training day. Since taking delivery of the T-34C, its safety record sets the standard for excellence in Navy Air Training Command.

Expected to achieve high levels of production while maintaining the highest standards of safety demanded, VT-27 consistently accomplishes its

important mission—by producing Navy and Marine Corps pilots of the highest quality for our nation’s defense.

Training Squadron

Twenty-Eight

Training Squadron Twenty-Eight was commissioned on May 1, 1960 under the leadership of Commanding Officer, Commander O.T. Knight. Prior to that, it operated as Advanced Training Unit 611. e primary mission of VT-28 was advanced multi-engine flight training for Student Naval Aviators (SNA's). More than 6,000 Naval Aviators have been trained by VT-28 before assignment to fixed wing, multi-engine squadrons. is curriculum has evolved over the years in response to the changing need to the Navy and advances in aviation technology.

VT-28 quickly established a standard of excellence which has continued unabated for 35 years. With 44 instructors, 48 TS-2F "Tracker" aircraft, 400 enlisted personnel and an average on board student count of 125, VT-28 set new training, safety, and cost efficiency records in its first 10 months of opera-

tion. During the 1960's, as the demand for fixed wing maritime pilots increased, so did the scope and responsibility of the squadron,

By the mid-'60s, the flight syllabus, augmented by simultaneous ground training, had expanded to include Familiarization, Basic and Radio Instrument Navigation, Cross County, Night Familiarization and Carrier Qualification. e TS-2F "Tracker" proved itself a most reliable and stable training platform during periods of changes in the syllabus and increased requirements. In 1969 alone, nearly 300 Naval Aviators were designated and 40,000 aircraft hours flown by VT-28. e squadron carrier qualified or "CQ'd" thousands of Student Naval Aviators in the "Tracker" until its retirement in 1979 when it was replaced by the T-44A on March 1st of that year.

e squadron continued to train Advanced Maritime Student Naval Aviators in the T-44A aircraft until 1990, when CNATRA directed the squadron to change its mission and become the first Instructor Training Squadron. VT-28 then assumed the responsibility for instructor training within Training

Air Wing Four as well as Instructor Standardization, Functional Check Flights, and course curriculum oversight in both the T-34C and the T-44A aircraft.

On April 1, 1993, VT-28's mission changed once again; this time to provide Primary/Intermediate Maritime and Heli copter instruction to Student Naval Avia tors while flying the T-34C. In the first months as CNATRA's fifth Primary Squadron, VT-28 continued to set the

standard for training excellence, flying more than 20,230 mishap free flight hours and graduating more than 200 primary students and more than 100 intermediate students.

With the mission change, a new squadron patch was designed. e new patch depicts the silhouette of a Texas Ranger mounted on a rearing horse. Flying over the Ranger is an aircraft leaving a patriotic contrail. is

patch symbolizes the proud tradition of VT-28's nickname and radio call sign, "Ranger," as well as the pride the squadron possesses for its new mission and its country.

T-34C "Turbo Mentor"

e primary aircraft flown by both Squadron Twenty-Seven and Squadron Twenty-Eight is the T-34C "Turbo Mentor." Developed in 1950’s as primary trainer for both the United States Navy and Air Force, the T-34 is used to instruct student pilots in basic flying skills. e original aircraft was designated as the T-34B and was used from 1955 to 1976. In 1978, the turbo-prop version of the T-34 entered service with the Navy.

Built by Beechcraft Inc., the T-34C "Turbo Mentor" utilizes a turbo-prop engine manufactured by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft of Canada (Model PT6A-25) large turbo-prop engine combined with a light airframe to produce flying qualities similar to, but safer than, those of military jet aircraft. e T-34 is an unpressurized, two-place tandem cockpit aircraft. It is used as the primary stage training aircraft for all Navy, Marine, and Coast Guard pilots as well as pilots from numerous other foreign countries.

NEWCOMER INFORMATION

Training Squadron irty-One

Training Squadron irty-One began training Student Naval Aviators in February 1958 as Advanced Training Unit 601. e unit, assigned to NAS Corpus Christi, flew the Beechcraft SNB multi-engine aircraft as an instrument and navigation trainer.

Commissioned as VT-31 on 1 May 1960, the squadron's scope of training was expanded and a new aircraft, the P2V"Nep tune," replaced the aging SNB's. In January 1961, VT-31 continued its expansion when the first PSM "Marlin" was accepted for the advanced training syllabus.

In 1963, another reorganization of advanced training found VT-31 transitioning to the TS-2A "Tracker," an aircraft the squadron would use for the next 15 years. e "Stoof," as it was

called, was used in all facets of advanced multi-engine training which included carrier qualifications for naval aviators.

VT-3I's transition to the BeechcraftT-44A began in spring of 1977, and on Feb. 8, 1979, the last TS-2A departed the squadron. In addition to the T-44A aircraft, students also receive instruction in fully computerized synthetic trainers. ese devices are able to simulate virtually any instrument flying condition and allow students to fly numerous instrument approaches. e trainer can be "frozen" during any phase of the flight to discuss mistakes or replay a portion of an instrument approach.

In 1996, VT-3I's aircraft fleet began to grow. e established and successful USAF joint training program resulted in VT-31 being tasked to train all Air Force C-130 students. With the number of

students almost doubling, the need for more aircraft became apparent. Since the T-44A is no longer in production, the UC-12B was chosen to support the current fleet of T-44A aircraft. e UC12B designation was changed to TC-12B and its primary mission was changed from cargo to training student Military Aviators.

NAVAL AIR STATION CORPUS CHRISTI

IN ITS FIRST THREE YEARS OF EXISTENCE, THE COMMAND REACHED THE PINNACLE OF THE NAVAL AIR TRAINING CORNMAN RECOGNITION: VT-35 WAS NAMED CALENDAR YEAR 2000 RECIPIENT OF THE CNATRA AWARD FOR TRAINING EXCELLENCE AS WELL AS THE 2000 RECIPIENT OF THE VADM GOLDTHWAITE AWARD FOR TRAINING EXCELLENCE.

VT-31's sister squadron, VT-35 was commissioned in October of 1999 to fly the TC-12B aircraft. VT-3I's command size was reduced by approximately one third and the aircraft fleet returned to solely the T-44A.

VT-31 is one of four aviation training squadrons attached to Training Air Wing

Four and is one of two advanced multi engine training squadrons in the Navy.

e squadron has historically trained students from the Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, Air Force and foreign students in all phases of advanced multi-engine flight procedures to include Aircraft Familiarization, Radio Instruments, Airways Navigation, Visual Navigation and Formation flying. After receiving their "Wings of Gold" or "Silver," the newly designated Military Aviators will head to their particular aircraft, usually a P-3C Orion (Navy), C-130 Hercules (Marine, Coast Guard and Air Force) or HU25 Falcon (Coast Guard).

VT-31 carries a staff composed of approximately 69 officers and 19 enlisted. e squadron utilizes Beechcraft contract maintenance which employs a totally civilian maintenance force. e squadron's primary mission continues to be training the finest Military Avia tors in the world.

T-44A "Pegasus"

e primary aircraft flown by Air Training Squadron irty-One is the T-44 "Pega sus." e T-44A is the military version of the popular Beechcraft King Air 90 and is equipped with a full range of avionics equipment for instrument conditions including a weather radar and RNAV. Students, as well as instructors, appreciate the fully pressurized and air-conditioned cabin which pro vides an ideal learning environment.

e aircraft is used for advanced turboprop aircraft training and for intermediate E2/ C2 (carrier based turboprop radar aircraft) training. It’s equipped with de-icing and anti-icing systems augmented by instrumentation and navigation equipment which allows flight under instrument and icing conditions.

e interior included a seating arrangement for an instructor pilot (right seat), a student pilot (left seat), and a second student. Two additional passenger seats are included. A distinguishing feature of the aircraft is the avionics fault insertion capabilities afforded the instructor pilot from the right-seat arm rest and the second student/observer audio control panel that allows the second student to monitor all radio communications. e T-44A is powered

Training Squadron irty-Five Training Squadron irty-Five (VT35) is one of two advanced multi-engine training squadrons in the Navy. Student military avia tors selected to fly the C-130 (USAF) and P-3 (USN) aircraft, report to VT-35 for training focused on asymmetrical thrust and instrument flight, and are awarded their pilot wings upon graduation. e squadron also provides fixed wing multi-engine transition training to U. S. Navy test pilot candidates from the helicopter community.

e squadron flies nearly 14,000 hours annually, with more than 43,000 landings and nearly 6,500 student flight training events. It is the only advanced joint leader ship (USN and USAF) flight training squadron in the military.

Training Squadron-35 was established Oct. 29, 1999, under the leadership of an Air Force Lieutenant Colonel-the first time that a Navy command was established under the leadership of a US Air Force commanding officer.

nition: VT-35 was named Calendar Year 2000 recipient of the CNATRA award for Training Excellence as well as the 2000 recipient of the VADM Goldthwaite Award for Training Excellence. e squadron exceeded all expectations in its first two years of existence, increasing pilot production by 20 percent for two consecutive years. In addition, VT-35 received the 2001 CNO Aviation Safety Award.

Training Squadron-35 consists of 12 Navy instructor pilots, 12 Air Force instructor pilots, one Marine Corps instructor pilot, three Air Force enlisted personnel, and two Government Service civilians. e squadron's administrative tasks are performed under contract by six civilian employees of SysTeam Corporation. Maintenance of the squadron's TC-12B "Hurons" is performed by 52 maintenance personnel under contract by Raytheon Aerospace Corporation.

e "Stingray Spirit" is evident in the squadron's proud sponsorship of the Pilot for a Day program.

e "Stingrays" initiated this program in September 2001, which helps youngsters who are afflicted with catastrophic illnesses and are patients at Driscoll Children's Hospital.

e pro gram provides these youngsters with an opportunity to spend the day visiting many of the Naval Air Station squadrons and facilities, experiencing a day in the life of a military aviator. For its outstanding com munity support, VT35's Pilot for a Day program received the 2002 CNO Project Good Neighbor Community Service Flag ship Award.

VT-35 is the squadron of choice for those who are anticipating orders to the Naval Air Training Command. e "Stinging Sting rays" of VT-35 are committed to training the "World's Premier Military Aviators" while making significant contributions to the Naval Training Command and the local community.

TC-12 "Huron"

Primary aircraft flown by Training Squadron irty-Five is the TC-12

"Huron," a twin engine trainer powered by two 850 shaft horsepower PT6A-41 turboprop engines manufactured by Pratt and Whiney. is engine is a reverse flow, free turbine type, employing a three stage axial and a single stage centrifugal compressor assembled as an integral unit.

Primary control instruments are the Attitude Indicator and the Horizontal Situational Indicator. Basic airspeed indicators, altimeters, and vertical speed indicators surround the ADI and HSI. e communications group is comprised of an interphone system connected to a VHF and a UHF radio. e navigation suite is made up of 2 VOR's, an ADF, and a TACA.

Fleet Readiness Center Site Corpus Christi

Fleet Readiness Center Site Corpus Christi provides flight line support and assistance for HM-15 and their aircraft.

It provides repair, manufacture, test and check of aircraft components, associated support equipment and related Airborne Mine Countermeasure equipment. Its mission emphasizes a clear focus on the sup ported activity's mission. It's dedicated to quality repairs and the fastest component turn around time possible.

Fleet Readiness Center is not only dedicated to the success of HM-15, but also we recognize the need for "giving back to the community." On-going community projects include Corpus Christi Food Bank volunteering, Habitat for Humanity, Adopt-a-School, and Operation Paintbrush Programs, coaching sports teams for youth, road side cleanup projects, and others.

Naval Health Clinic

Naval Hospital Corpus Christi (NHCC) is a multifaceted patient centered ambulatory care facility dedicated to providing first-rate care to persons entitled to health care according to Department of Defense (DOD) eligibility criteria. e

Command consists of the core facility located in Corpus Christi, Texas, two Branch Health Clinics (BHCs), located in Kingsville and Fort Worth, Texas, the Navy and Marine Corps Fleet Liaison at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) in San Antonio, and NHCCC Detachment San Antonio. Primary Care is the largest focus, with illness intervention requiring hospitalization pro vided through our TRICARE managed care support contractor partner, Humana Military Healthcare Services.

At NHCCC Healthcare professionals partner with patients through ongoing Medical Home Port Team (MHPT) communication and collaboration.

MHPT is a new model of patient and family-centered care that emphasizes team-based, comprehensive care designed to fully meet the complete primary care health and wellness needs of each patient. e model under scores the provider/patient relationship and leverages other members of the primary care team to actively participate in patient care.

In addition to Ambulatory Health Care services, the core facility has a Behavioral Health Care Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program (SARP). Naval Health Clinic Corpus Christi maintains Joint Commission Ambulatory Health Care, Behavioral Health Care, College of American Pathologists, Food and Drug Administration, and Ameri can College of Radiology accreditation.

e Command is an active participant in the TRICARE program, and there are over 12,654 TRICARE Prime beneficiaries enrolled at the core facility and branch clinics. On a typical day at the core facility, there are 234 medical visits, 30 dental visits, 836 pharmacy prescriptions filled, 21 radiology exams and 314 laboratory tests.

Reporting Aboard

Military personnel upon arrival should report to the Front Desk and have the Petty Officer of the Watch or the Chief of the Day stamp/endorse your orders. en, proceed to Manpower on the second deck to start the check-in process. If you report to the health clinic after 2000 you will be required to report back the next day to have them stamp

your orders. You will then be required to report to Manpower at 0800 to start checking-in. e check-in process is a 3-day process that your assigned sponsor will assist you with. You will need your Service record, medical record, and dental record with you.

Military Spouse Preference

Military spouse preference is preference in employment for civilian positions and assistance in locating employment opportunities with the Department of Defense (DoD) in the same commuting area of the sponsor's duty

station. "Preference" is priority in the selection process for military spouses when they are being considered along with others. It applies only when the spouse is among the best-qualified candidates and is prior or currently civil service. "Preference" does not mean that positions are created or made available especially for spouses, or that spouses, have any special appointing authority or a guarantee that a job will be available.

Spouse preference is applied in several different ways, depending on how a position is being filled, its location, and whether you have "status" (meaning civil service status). "Status" applicants include current career/ career-conditional employees, reinstatement eligible, and prior overseas family member appointables.

If you are the spouse of an active duty Armed Forces member, you are entitled, upon PCS relocation to the sponsor's duty station, to spouse employment preference.

Virtually all DoD civilian positions at GS-15 (and equivalent) and below, worldwide, with certain exceptions, including intelligence-related positions and mandatory mobility positions.

Note—Preference also applies to non-appropriated funds (NAP) positions (e.g., jobs in clubs, messes, recreational facilities, etc.) at UA08 and below. is fact sheet does not provide information about procedures for NAP employment. Preference applies up to 30 days prior to sponsor's reporting date to the new duty station and throughout the tour at that duty station. In foreign areas, spouses don't receive preference until they actually arrive at the overseas location. Activities are not required to grant preference if you are within six months of the next PCS move.

Generally, spouses with preference must be selected ahead of non-spouses when both are being considered. However, because of the many options in the filling of positions, exceptions can sometimes apply. As examples, selections of displaced employees, overseas returnees, certain internal employees and hiring in some special programs may take precedence over military spouses. Also, preference does not apply when it would result in displacement of a current employee or when positions are filled below the full performance level (except for positions formerly covered by the PACE).

NAVAL AIR STATION CORPUS CHRISTI

verted at Charleston Naval Shipyard and in December 1965, re-commissioned by the Army as the Army’s first floating helicopter maintenance facility as the USNS Corpus Christi Bay. It operated in Southeast Asian waters during the Vietnam War and was manned by Army Aeronautical Depot Maintenance Center personnel.

Corpus Christi Army Depot (CCAD)

Corpus Christi Army Depot (CCAD) is the largest tenant organization on Naval Air Station Corpus Christi (NASCC) with more than 158 acres, 60 buildings and 2.3 million sq. Feet of industrial space. With a workforce of more that 6000 civilian employees and contractors and an annual impact of more than $2.5 billion, CCAD is the largest industrial employer and economic engine for the South Texas region. Offering virtually year round ideal weather for flight testing, CCAD is the Department of Defense’s primary facility for joint services of rotary wing and component repair.

CCAD ensures aviation readiness through overhaul, repair, modification, recapitalization, retrofitting, testing and modernization of helicopters, engines and components or rotary-wing aircraft of all services, including world-wide onsite field maintenance teams, analytical crash investigations and chemical material process facilities. CCAD serves as a depot training base for active duty Army, National Guard, Reserve and foreign military personnel.

Corpus Christi Army Depot also performs depot-level maintenance and repair, modernization and recapitalization on the following aircraft: UH-60 Black-

hawk, AH-64 Apache; CH-47 Chinook; USAF HH-60 Pavehawk, and the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior. Additionally, with more unmanned aerial systems (UAS’s) used by the military, the depot is taking on new challenges with the UAS Shadow, setting the stage for additional platforms that are changing the face of combat.

In the early 1940s, the area which is now the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station was developed to train Navy aviators to fly seaplane and carrier-based aircraft.

ey operated an aircraft overhaul and repair facility here until June 30, 1959, when the operation was shut down, putting 3, 000 people out of work.

e facility sat idle for nearly two years until the Army took possession of the large hangars and other buildings located on a 15-acre tract. e Army Aeronautical Depot Maintenance Center began rehiring some of the trained civilian employees. When it opened its doors, maintenance center was tasked with helicopter repair and maintenance for three engines and four airframes.

e first UH-1 Iroquois (Huey) helicopter was overhauled in 1962 and by 1968 the facility was in full operation, providing repair and overhaul services to approximately 400 helicopters.

Fleet Logistics Center

e Fleet Logistics Center Jacksonville Detachment NAS Corpus Christi is located in Building 10, on Ocean Drive. e detachment provides logistics support for NAS Corpus Christi and its tenant activities. e Procurement Division is responsible for purchasing open market goods and services for Navy customers throughout the state of Texas.

Marine Aviation Training Support Group Twenty-Two

Marine Aviation Training Support Group Twenty-Two is a shore activity responsible for providing administration support for Marine Corps personnel within its area of responsibility. Under the operational control of the Marine Corps Training Command, it coordinates it administrative mission through the use of Marine liaisons at NAS Kingsville, Texas; Vance AFB, Okla; and NASA, Houston. Marine Corps Reserve Training Center

e Marine Corps Reserve Training Center at NAS Corpus Christi is the

home of Company C, 1st Battalion, 23rd Marines, 4th Marine Division. e unit is a Marine infantry company with two of its platoons located in Harlingen, Texas. Members of the unit have deployed in the past five years, twice to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan.

e company drills one weekend a month for training, and the inspector-instructor staff provides administrative support such as humanitarian transfers, discharges and assistance with military identification cards for active duty and retired Marines and their dependents. U.S. Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi

e U.S. Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi, located in Hangar 41, is responsible for search and rescue in an area extending from the Colorado River to the Mexican border, making it the southernmost, major unit in the Eighth Coast Guard District. e unit, as it exists today, was formed in 1978 after combining assets and personnel from Group and Air Station Corpus Christi into one command. In 2005, the Group, Air Station, and Marine Safety Office combined to form Sector Corpus Christi. Today, there are five cutters, six

450 men and women who are under the Sector command located aboard Naval Air Station Corpus Christi. Outlying units include three small boat stations, five cutters, two LORAN stations, two Coast Guard Auxiliary divisions and three Aids to Navigation Teams.

In addition to search and rescue, the unit is responsible for marine safety and environmental protection, law enforcement, and maintaining aids to navigation.

Boat crews and air crews are ready 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to respond, within 30 minutes, to calls for assistance. e unit's small boats are deployed for an average annual total of7,800 hours. Its five cutters log more than 5,200 at-sea hours per year, and Air Station crews fly an aver age of 5,176 hours per year. Coast Guard Auxiliary units also augment active duty units with 4,000 boat hours and 600 air craft hours annually, performing various Coast Guard missions.

Flying five P-3 Orion Command and Control aircraft and five Surveillance

pus Christi, CBP NASOC is responsible for detecting, identifying and tracking aircraft used to smuggle drugs into the United States. It also provides the Department of Homeland Security aerial protection for critical national infrastructures, and helps protect the President and Vice President when they are airborne.

Its area of responsibility includes the entire Western Hemisphere with P-3 aircraft routinely operating from regions of Alaska and Canada, south through the continental United States to the equatorial and Andean ridge latitudes.

e aircraft have been re positioned as far south as Paraguay, as far west as Hawaii, and as far east as Europe.

With a staff of only 129 people, this organization has been responsible for making a considerable dent in the drug trafficking trade. Since June 1987, Surveillance Branch-West has been responsible for the seizure of cocaine with an estimated wholesale value of well more than $4.8 billion at current market value.

Customs and Border Protection counter drug air and marine detection, surveillance and intelligence operations have resulted in the arrest of 888 individuals suspected of involvement in smuggling activities; and the seizure of200 aircraft, 213 vehicles, 126 vessels, and one million pounds of marijuana

Corpus Christi

With a population of more than 380,000 people, Corpus Christi is a bustling city filled with modern conveniences such as shopping centers; art galleries; ballet; symphony; and playhouse; two major col leges and a minor league baseball team. It is a city where people enjoy a diversity of employment in areas like the oil and gas industry, manufacturing, professional and business services, tourism, and in government jobs as well as many other fields.

But the heart of Corpus Christi and the surrounding communities is still what can be taken from the land and the sea, with fishing villages to the north along the Coastal Bend and ranch land to the south. ese include fields filled with cotton and grains and ranges where cattle are abundant.

is is home to the largest working ranch in the United States, the King Ranch. Covering 825,000 acres, the ranch is larger than the state of New Jersey. Established in 1853, Captain Richard King and his ranch hands had to battle marauding Indians and bandits to maintain this land. After his death, his widow Henrietta, donated land for the town site of Kingsville, and helped bring a railroad to the new city. is city and railroad helped support her enormous King Ranch. Today, tours are still given through portions of the ranch. But now, Navy planes pass overhead, and the Naval Air Station at Kingsville has taken over as the city's major employer.

In addition to wide open spaces above ranch lands, Navy planes pass over tidal marshes and estuaries, over the Intra coastal Waterway, and Padre Island to the Gulf of Mexico. e land is rich in wildlife and sea life. Padre Island

National Sea shore, encompassing more than 130,000 acres, is the longest remaining undeveloped stretch of barrier island in the world. e island is one of only a handful of places in the world where the endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtles nest.

All along this coastline, the skies are alive with thousands of migratory birds. More than 115,000 acres of land has been set aside at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge as a breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife. Today, it is the wintering grounds for the world's largest wild flock of endangered whooping cranes; as well as egrets, herons and roseate spoonbills.

But it is salt water game fish that draw most sport fishermen to this coastal region. e bays, estuaries and coastline provide excellent speckled trout and redfish fishing year-round. Red snapper and amberjack are also taken year-

round offshore. King mackerel, cobia, and billfish then show up every summer and fall. But with salt water fishing, you never know what is about to strike. And there is always a place to fish in South Texas; whether from a boat, the surf, pier, or wading.

A drive along the coastline of Corpus Christi Bay leaves one understanding why area residents and tourists alike love the sea. e drive can be completed in three hours, but it is best to allow a full day to enjoy the many attractions.

Ocean Drive, a 7-mile scenic waterfront road, begins at NAS Corpus Christi and passes stately homes, parks, and walking paths down to Corpus Christi marina where acres of sleek sailing ships, private yachts, and deep sea fishing boats are moored. Sightseeing boats, water sport rentals, and seafood restaurants abound.

US Highway 181 then passes over Harbor Bridge, the second tallest bridge in Texas, which enables deep-sea freighters to pass into the Port of Corpus Christi...the 5th largest deep-water port in the United States. Just across the bridge are Corpus Christi's public beaches, the Texas State Aquarium, and the USS Lexington Museum on the Bay.

Both the aquarium and aircraft carrier exhibits are open daily. e aquarium features Dolphin Bay, over 250 species of fish, and exhibits on salt and back bay marshes. Minutes away, the 16-deck aircraft carrier Lexington is open for the public to explore vintage aircraft and WWII era exhibits, tour the flight deck, bridge, captain's quarters and a flight simulator, and see a movie on Navy flight training.

Following further along the north shore of Corpus Christi Bay, you'll pass through the fishing villages of Portland, Ingleside, and Aransas Pass, considered by many to be the fishing capital of the world. State Road 361 then turns toward the barrier islands and you pass miles of estuaries, islands of salt grasses surrounded by canals of water that rise and ebb with the flow of the tides, which are a breeding ground for Gulf sea life.

e Texas Aquarium is a popular site for servicemembers, their families and tourists from around the world.

NAVAL AIR STATION CORPUS CHRISTI

e road temporarily ends where your car is loaded aboard a ferry boat for a five minute free trip to Port Aransas. (In peak tourist season, the wait can be up to an hour, so enjoy the view and pack a lunch or snacks for kids). Port Aransas, a small fishing village, is experiencing a building boom, with many new vacation homes, retirement communities, and high rise condominiums under construction.

Now on the north tip of the barrier island, State Road 361 travels south along Mustang Island, named for the wild horses brought there by the Spanish in the 1800s. Today, it is home for Mustang Island State Park, which offers camping, picnicking, fishing, swimming, hiking and mountain biking on five miles of open beach.

One more small bridge, and you're back on Padre Island. A right turn, cross the causeway bridge, and you have returned to Corpus Christi Naval Air Station.

But if the sea is still calling, turn left and travel a few miles to the Padre Island National Seashore. Take your shoes off, and sink your toes into the sand. Listen to the surf, and solitude, as the sun sets over this South Texas outdoor paradise.

In January of 1992, the USS Lexington arrived at Naval Station Ingleside and became a permanent Texas resident. In June of that year, the United States Navy officially signed over the ship to city officials and she was towed to her final berth on North Beach. e USS Lexington was opened to the public in October of 1992 and in November was dedicated in a formal ceremony attended by representatives of the City State and Federal governments, as well as former crew members and members of numerous veterans organizations.

Port Aransas

Port Aransas is an island getaway for the whole family. With beaches and loads of sun, Port Aransas is perfectly located to meet your relaxation and

adventure needs. Located between the dunes of Mustang Island and the Corpus Christi Ship Channel, its lovely shoreline is a great place to wander among the seashells, frolic in the waves, soak in the sun, relax in the breezes. Just next door, the rest of Mustang Island offers a number of nature related places, which provide fabulous opportunities for birding, kayaking, fishing, surfing and swimming. With a laid back attitude unique to this area, the intimate community of Port Aransas has many boutiques, shops and galleries, cafes, exceptional restaurants. ere is also ample lodging in the area, ranging from cozy cottages, conventional motel rooms, and RV parks to high rise condos and upscale private homes.

Port Aransas is located on the northern tip of Mustang Island. Take your choice of two ways to access the island. From Corpus Christi, the island is linked by the JFK Causeway, which climbs high above the Laguna Madre making a direct line to SH 361 and Port A. Alternately, you can take the 'scenic route.'

Ship Channel via car ferries, which operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Delightfully often, bottlenose dolphins accompany the ferries back and forth. Lighthouse Lakes Trail

e Lighthouse Lakes Trails are located in an area called North Harbor Island, just west of Port Aransas and north of the Highway 361 Causeway.

ere are a series of three individual, but interconnected, trails that can be accessed by launching from the north side of the causeway and by following a series of trail markers. Fishing in these areas can be excellent, as is bird watch-

ing and just general paddling around. Your ability to access some of these areas is dependent upon tidal level, so it is a good idea to check before you go. Higher tides make for much easier access. Also, these trails can be pretty tough paddling in winds greater than 20 mph. Much of the bottom is easily waded, but there are numerous oyster reefs in the area, so sturdy shoes are a must. You must cross a deep shipping channel to access the trails, but the channel is not excessively wide and you can cross it in less than five minutes with moderate paddling.

Mustang Island State Park

Located just South of Port Aransas on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, this area covers more than 3,900 acres and has a 5-mile beachfront for visitors to

enjoy. e land was acquired from private owners in 1972 and opened to the public in 1979.

At Fisherman's Wharf, our deep sea fishing schedule is based on the seasonal migrations and availability of various species of fish in the Gulf of Mexico. Other displays in the main building highlight current and past research projects and feature

Padre Island

Padre Island is the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world and the largest stretch of undeveloped ocean beach in Padre Island National Seashore separates the Gulf of Mexico from the Laguna Madre, one of the few hypersaline lagoons in the world. e park protects 70 miles of coastline, dunes, prairies, and wind tidal flats teaming with life. It is a safe nesting ground for the Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle and a haven for 380 bird species. It also has a rich his tory, including the Spanish shipwrecks of 1954.

Portland

Portland is a city of over 10 square miles located in San Patricio County just north of Corpus Christi. With a current population of approximately 17,000, Portland is home to a diversified workforce serving Coastal Bend industries and businesses. e city is accessible by two major highways, U.S. Highway 181 and Texas Highway 35. Portland is positioned as the gateway into Corpus

Christi and other points south. Portland's location on two bays still pro vides excellent fishing, boating, sailing, swimming, and kite surfing.

Indian Point Park and Sunset Lake Park is the pier and wade-fisherman's first choice for a premiere fishing experience. Bird watching, nature study, children's play area, as well as food and drinks are available. Some of the best wade fishing and bird watching can be found at Portland's Indian Point Wetlands and Sunset Lake nature trails. Portland is a great place to live, with safe upscale neighborhoods, award-winning schools and excellent city services.

Rockport

e City of Rockport, located 30 miles northeast of Corpus Christi on Texas Highway 35, is the County Seat of Aransas County. Rockport was incorporated by a Special Act of the Legislature of Texas Charter granted on May 29, 1871. Surrounded on three sides by the waters of Aransas, Copano and Port bays, the sheer variety of outdoor activities are what makes Rockport appeal to the many tourists as well as local citizens. e fishing village of Rockport has been a favorite coastal hideaway for wealthy Texans since the 1800s. Rock-

port is located along the Texas Tropical Trail and is a noteworthy stop along the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. Other points of interest such as Texas Maritime Museum, Fulton Mansion, Rockport Center for the Arts, Connie Hagar Wildlife Sanctuary and the TX Dot Demonstration Gardens and Wetlands Ponds draw tourists and “Winter Texans” alike to Rockport.

Rockport is a popular tourist destination because of its beach, ski basin, and the sport fishing available there.

NAS Kingsville is home to Training Air Wing TWO, which Commands two training squadrons: Training Squadron Twenty-One (VT-21), and Training Squadron Twenty-Two (VT-22), which fly the T-45 “Goshawk.” Approximately 150 aviation students report each year to Kingsville for undergraduate jet/ strike pilot training.

As part of a national network of Naval Air Auxiliary Stations, Kingsville was established in 1942 during the herculean efforts to train fighter pilots for combat missions during World War II. NAS Kingsville was commissioned on July 4, 1942 - an Independence Day that was carried out in the context of a national emergency that would affect every aspect of military and civilian life. Many structures and facilities aboard the air station were intended to be temporary and were constructed under extremely tight deadlines. Some were replaced or expanded during the 1950’s Cold War era, and others were replaced in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s with increased military appropriations. Only one of the original buildings remains today, Quarters ‘A’, used as senior officer quarters. e home serves as a living

legacy to the air station’s contribution to World War II and the Korean conflict.

NAS Kingsville became an all-jet training base in 1960 with three training squadrons: VT-21, VT-22 and VT-23. e facility was upgraded to an autonomous Naval Air Station in1968. With the onset of the Vietnam War, the base increased both its flying activity and training schedule. By 1986, with aircraft technological innovations, squadrons VT-21 and VT-22 were providing advanced jet/strike training in the TA-4 “Skyhawk,” while VT-23 was providing basic jet training in the T2-C “Buckeye.” Both training courses included carrier operations.

After a major realignment of the Naval Aviation Advanced Training Command, Training Air Wings were established in the 1970s. Training Air

Wing ONE at NAS Meridian, Miss., and Training Air Wing TWO at NAS Kingsville were the first two training air wings designated. Training Air Wing TWO was established on Aug. 1, 1971.

In 1992, the T45-A “Goshawk” aircraft was introduced as the sole training aircraft flown at Kingsville.

Approximately 1,900 people are now stationed at NAS Kingsville: 450 military members, an average of 150 student aviators and 975 civilian and contract employees. ere are also about 250 U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the base.

NAS Kingsville property includes more than 18,000 acres of land at four locations in South Texas. e main station (NAS Kingsville) consists of nearly 4,000 acres including four 8,000-ft. Runways, four aviation hangars and 1.2

million sq. ft. of building space. Navy Auxiliary Landing Field (NALF) Orange Grove consists of 1,379 acres and two 8,000-ft. Runways while McMullen Target Range near Freer, Texas, consist of

two target sites on 4,000 acres of Navy property. NAS Kingsville’s Escondido Ranch, located adjacent to the McMullen Target Range, consists of more than 6,500 acres.

Navy families moving to Kingsville are encouraged to contact the Housing Service Center as soon as orders are received. Temporary quarters can be arranged by contacting the Bachelor Housing Office at (361) 516-6428 or DSN 876-6591. e combined officer and enlisted billeting office is open from 5 a.m. until 9 p.m. daily. An answering machine is available after duty hours.

Newcomers are also encouraged to contact the NAS Corpus Christi Personal Property Office as soon as possible after receiving orders to arrange shipment of household goods. Once shipment dates are known, contact the Personal Property Office to arrange storage or delivery of household goods.

Preplanning is essential for newcomers moving to the Kingsville area. All new military personnel should hear from a

CHECK-IN

Newly reporting personnel are encouraged to check in before 4 p.m. at their prospective command headquarters building. Enlisted personnel reporting to the NAS Kingsville command should report to Building 2740, located on McCain Street. When arriving after duty hours, contact the NAS Kingsville Command Duty Officer (CDO) by calling (361) 438-6938. Personnel reporting to Training Air Wing TWO should report to the Student Control Office, Building 2741.

Personnel are encouraged to check in before 9 p.m. when the billeting office closes. When arriving after normal duty hours, the NAS Kingsville Command Duty Officer (CDO) can stamp your orders. Notify the appropriate duty officer in advance that you will be arriving after normal working hours by calling (361) 438-6938. Once you arrive, ask the NAS Security Police Office (361- 516-6217) to notify the duty officer. e NAS Security

Motorcycles, mopeds and motor scooters require all of the above documentation and proof of Motorcycle Safety Course completion. Safety gear requirements for motorcycle riders on base include a helmet with eye protection, hard-soled shoes with heels, long¬-sleeved shirts or jackets, longlegged trousers, full-fingered gloves, and an orange or yellow vest with reflective strips front and back.

Vehicle decals are issued from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Temporary passes are available from the Security Dispatch office outside of these hours.

Bachelor Enlisted Quarters has accommodations for up to 98 enlisted men and women. Building 3740 is air-conditioned and contains a variety of beverage and snack food vending machines in the lounge areas.

Public Private Venture (PPV) Housing

Hawk's Landing

One of the very first military installations to a test program to obtain quality housing through private contract, NAS Kingsville opened its first public private venture (PPV) housing site in 1997. Hawk's Landing features 102 units, Including 26 two-bedroom units

and 76 three-bedroom units ranging from 1,030-to 1,207-square feet. Hawk's Landing is located about LS miles from the base.

On-site features include a community center, swimming pool, tot-lots, basketball and volleyball courts, soccer and ball fields, and the leasing office. Unit amenities include dishwashers, carpeting, extra closets, updated floor plans and other features of contemporary quality housing at affordable prices. Pets are permitted with certain restrictions and fees/ deposits.

Hunter's Cove

Kingsville opened a second PPV property, Hunter's Cove, on Oct. 26, 2001. Located at 3400 S. Brahma Boulevard in Kingsville, Hunter 's Cove is conveniently located approximately three miles from the entrance to the air station.

Hunter's Cove is a gated townhouse community located between Highway 77 and Brahma Blvd. e complex consists of 150 units. ere are 56

three-bedroom units with 1,447-square feet and 28 four-bedroom units with 1,477-square feet. Additionally there are 10 handicapped three- and four¬ bedroom units ranging from 1,274-square feet to 1,480-square feet.

On site features include a leasing office, community center, swimming pool, basketball and volleyball courts, and soccer and ball fields. Unit amenities include carpeting, dishwashers, free basic cable, back patios, and updated floor plans, providing affordable and suitable housing for military members and their families. Pets are permitted with certain restrictions and fees/ deposits.

Lease Information

Service members and their families residing in PPV complexes are responsible for certain utility expenses. Rent

at Hawk's Landing is reviewed annually based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and rental increases go into effect when leases expire or when a change of rent has been warranted.

Hunters Cove rental costs are based on BAH and set at a market rent rate. Should a military family decide to opt for a Civilian Lease instead of a Military Lease there are separate requirements. e Housing Service Center can assist you with this decision of which type of lease to hold.

Initial leases are for six, nine or 12 months. Residents who do not renew their lease upon expiration are placed on a month-to-month lease with an increase in their monthly rental amount at Hawk's Landing, while Hunter's Cove will convert to a month-to¬-month lease until a new lease is signed. A "Mil-

itary Clause" is honored with a 30-day written notice to vacate. If orders are not in hand, a 30-day written "notice to vacate" is still required and a copy of orders must be provided once they are received.

at their office located in Building 2740, Room 112. Most of the community housing is available in Kingsville, Bishop, Ricardo and Riviera. Utility deposits may be charged for electricity, water, refuse collection, and gas. Bring a copy of your last utility bill to provide to the utility company to facilitate services.

e day-to-day management, maintenance and operations of the PPV complexes are the responsibility of the Property Management/ Owner Manager. Residents should contact the manager when there are concerns or issues regarding occupancy at either location. Maintenance work requests must be submitted in writing to the management office. However, if there is an issue which does not get proper attention you should bring it to the attention of the Housing Service Center.

Eligibility

e Housing Service Center maintains a referral list of military personnel

wanting to live in PPV housing. Active-duty military with families have top priority. If PPV housing cannot be filled by active¬ duty families, other categories of personnel including military bachelors and civilian employees then become eligible.

Applications for housing consist of: (1) DD1746 Application for Assignment to Housing (completed and signed by the active-duty member); (2) copy of the active-duty member's original orders; and (3) Certification of Dependents documentation (examples of dependent certification documents include NAVPERS 1070/603 Record of Emergency Data/ Dependency Application (Page 2), a NAVCOMPT 3072 Dependency Action Status, or a DD1172 Application for Uniformed Services Identification Card [DEERS Enrollment].

Applications may be made at any time after receipt of PCS orders and up to 30 days after reporting to new permanent duty station. Control dates will normally be the date of detachment from your last PCS. Applicants must confirm their application by contacting the Housing Service Center on their detaching date or no later than 30 days after reporting to their new duty station.

e Air Operations Department is comprised of five divisions: Air Traffic Control, Ground Electronics, Field Support, NALF Orange Grove, and the McMullen Target Range located in Freer, Texas. Air Ops also includes the command BASH program and Community Planning.

e Air Operations Department supported 244,439 Air Traffic Control (ATC) operations during 2011. Air Ops also managed all operations and field functions for the 2012 "Wings Over South Texas" Air Show, hosting more

than 100,000 visitors over the threeday period

Air Traffic Control - e NAS Kingsville Air Traffic Control Division handles the day-to-day aircraft operations at NAS Kingsville and Navy Auxiliary Landing Field Orange Grove. e department consists of 70 active-duty Navy air traffic controllers (ACs) and four contract personnel. In 2011, the ATC staff handled 149,812 flight operations.

Control Tower - e NAS Kingsville control tower issues clearances and information to aircraft and vehicular traffic on runways, taxiways, and other designated areas of the airfield in addition to aircraft operating in the assigned airspace. Airborne traffic controlled by the tower includes visual flight rules (VFR) and instrument flight rules (IFR) traffic released to local control jurisdic-

tion. Manual (non-radar) approach control services can also be provided from the control tower.

Radar - e function of the Radar Branch is to provide radar air traffic control services to both IFR and VFR air traffic within the command's assigned airspace.

Approach Control Radar - An $11.3 National Air Space Modification project was completed in 2010 for the Approach Control Radar facility. e project upgraded NAS Kingsville's Air Traffic Control (ATC) capabilities from analog to digital and transformed the command's ATC facilities to the most-modern in the Navy.

Flight Planning - e Flight Planning Branch of ATC provides for flight planning, receiving and processing inbound and outbound flight information, and

providing for planning, receiving and processing flight plans.

Field Support - e Field Support Division handles all transient aircraft movement on the airfield, maintains the command's arresting gear, and provides aircraft support for visiting aircraft on and around the Air Operations tarmac.

During the past year, Field Support Division supported the Training Air Wing TWO training mission by conducting excellent/safe turnarounds for 56 transient aircraft; responding to 16 short field arrest¬ments; and pumping 14,496 gallons of fuel.

Ground Electronics - e NAS Kingsville Ground Electronics Division is responsible for preventive maintenance of all ATC and Radar equipment at NAS Kingsville, NALF Orange Grove, and the McMullen Target Range. ey also provide maintenance on the command TACAN and Precision Approach Radar, and command radios and communication systems.

Ground Electronics is also responsible for installation and upkeep of transmitter and receiver sites, certifying and maintaining NAS Kingsville and NALF Orange Grove's runway lighting systems, and providing PA system support for ceremonies and special events.

NALF Orange Grove - Navy Auxiliary Landing Field (NALF) Orange Grove is located in Jim Wells County about 40 miles northwest of NAS Kingsville. e site serves as an additional training site for Training Air Wing TWO, as an extension of usable air space. e field

consists of two 8,000-ft runways, a parking apron, air traffic control tower and radar facility, a crash, fire, and rescue station, and a fully instrumental aircraft refueling station.

NALF Orange Grove supported the Training Air Wing TWO training mission in 2011 by completing 32,428 military operations and 17 civilian operations. Additional accomplishments include the addition of a $5.6M Lighting Project; the construction of an Emergency Generator Building; the installation of new lighting and taxiway lights to the secondary ramp - which added 12 new parking spaces for aircraft during night operations; and the installation of a new airfield lighting control system - allowing all airfield lighting to be controlled from a single source.

Branch Health Clinic Kingsville provides outpatient medical care to active

duty military personnel, military retirees, and their family members. Primary Care offers the largest concentration of care, with illness intervention requiring hospitalization provided through external resource sharing agreements.

Beneficiaries in the system have a Primary Care Manager as a central point of care delivery. e healthcare system offers a wide range of outpatient services including: Primary Care, Military Medicine, Flight Medicine, Occupational Health Services, Optometry Specialty Services from Naval Health Clinic Corpus Christi, Health Promotion and Wellness, Ancillary Services, Manage Care, Health Benefits Advisor, and UM/ Risk Management.

e Clinic has 52 staff members including six officers, 33 enlisted, nine civil service, one contractor, and three Reservists, and is an active participant in the TRICARE program, with more than 2,200 enrolled TRICARE Prime beneficiaries who account for over 13,000 annual visits.

e mission of the Command Religious Ministries Program is to meet the spiritual, family and moral needs of all Sailors, Marines, and civilian personnel at NAS Kingsville. Religious services are conducted every Sunday at McFall Memorial Chapel, a beautiful and historic building erected in 1942. e church was named after Chaplain William McFall, one of the first station chaplains, who died in action on Dec. 12, 1943, while serving in the South Pacific.

Protestant services are held beginning at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, while Catholic Services begin at 12:30 p.m.

McFall Chapel is available for weddings, funerals and other appropriate

Language Tapes - FFSC has language tapes for families PCSing toJapan and Italy. For families coming to NAS Kingsville, FFSC has Spanish I and Spanish II language tapes available to help you familiarize yourself with the Spanish language (which can be helpful with employment in this area or when you visit Mexico). Counseling provides opportunities for change and the formats include short¬ term, individual, marital, family and group modalities. Issues addressed include situational problems in living; depression/grief after a loss; troubled relationships; financial difficulties;

Counseling may be offered through educational programs such as stress management, parenting, marriage enrichment or self-esteem workshops. FFSC counselors are licensed and credentialed professionals such as counselors, social workers, psychologists, and marriage and family therapists.

Training Air Wing Two

Each year, approximately 150 student naval aviators report to Training Air Wing TWO for Jet/Strike Training. ese students report to one of two training squadrons: Training Squadron Twenty-One (VT-21) or Training Squadron Twenty-Two (VT-22). e Training Air Wing is responsible for providing the fleet with newly winged Navy and Marine Corps aviators. e Air Wing also consists of approximately 75 instructor pilots, and 105 T-45 “Goshawk” aircraft. Students undergo a rigorous training syllabus in the T-45 “Goshawk” on the way to earning their “Wings of Gold.”

Curriculum

Students report to Training Air Wing TWO at NAS Kingsville from primary flight training at NAS Corpus Christi, Texas or NAS Whiting Field, Milton, Fla. Upon arrival, they begin 10-to-12 months of training at NAS Kingsville.

e Training Air Wing TWO Ground Training Department provides classroom instruction, computer-based instruction, and flight simulation in instruction and operational flight trainers.

L-3 Communications contract maintenance and support departments provide the Navy with maintenance and upkeep of the aircraft, and support for the aircrew’s flight gear. Fidelity Technologies, Inc., provides support for all of the ground and simulator instruction.

Strike Instructor Training School, also a part of Training Air Wing TWO, prepares winged fleet aviators to become flight instructors in the T-45. Training begins in the Ground Training

THE T-45 STRIKE FLIGHT CURRICULUM IS COMPRISED OF 16 FLIGHT STAGES. DURING THESE 16 STAGES STUDENTS WILL FLY APPROXIMATELY 156 HOURS. THIS INCLUDES NEARLY 47 HOURS OF SOLO FLIGHT TIME.

department of Training Wing TWO and consists of three weeks of classroom instruction. Students attend classes on subjects that include engineering (T45), aerodynamics, meteorology, flight rules and regulations, and instrument navigation. During this ground school training, students also begin simulator events that teach students the capabilities and systems in the T-45 Goshawk and how to deal with malfunctions of those systems.

e T-45 Strike Flight Curriculum is comprised of 16 flight stages. During these 16 stages students will fly approximately 156 hours. is includes nearly 47 hours of solo flight time. Students will also fly approximately 96 hours in aircraft simulators before they complete the syllabus.

e first eight stages of training are designed to introduce the students naval aviator to jet aircraft and provide a

basis for future stages. ey include instrumental training, jet familiarization flights, formation flights, night familiarization flights, and land based carrier qualifications.

During these stages the students are qualified to fly solo in the T-45 in all weather conditions. ey also learn to fly in two-and-four-plane formation flights, and land the T-45 the same way they would on an aircraft at sea.

e later stages of training introduce the student to the strike community with Operational Navigation in which the students learn to plan and fly low level flight routes. ey also fly weapons, guns, and air combat maneuvers, which introduces the students to different offensive weapons and tactics. In weapons, the students drop 25 lb. practice bombs at a target range near Kingsville. And practice gunnery and air combat maneuvers with other aircraft.

A camera mounted in the cockpit that records the encounters. ese stages prepare the students for the tactical jets that they will be flying when they leave Kingsville for the fleet.

e syllabus culminates in the second Carrier Qualification Stage when the students travel to an active aircraft carrier at sea to complete their Carrier Qualification and make their first carrier landings. Students must carrier-qualify by completing 14 landings and 10 arrested landings aboard an aircraft carrier at sea before they can complete jet/strike training.

Once students successfully complete the jet/strike syllabus, they are designated as Naval Aviators and presented their coveted “Wings of Gold.” At that time they will be selected for one of two fleet pipelines: the intermediate and advanced E2-C (Hawk-eye)/C2-A (Greyhound) pipeline, or the advanced

strike pipeline, flying the EA-6B Prowler, EA-18G Growler, F/A-18 C/D Hornet, or the F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet. Upon selection, they move on to Fleet Replacement Squadrons where they will learn their fleet aircraft.

Boeing T-45 "Goshawk"

e Boeing, T-45 "Goshawk", flown at NAS Kingsville, is a tandem-seat, carrier capable, jet trainer used to train Navy and Marine Corps pilots. A Navy version of the British Aerospace 'Hawk' aircraft, it is used for intermediate and advanced portions of the Navy/ Marine Corps pilot training program for jet carrier aviation and tactical strike missions.

e T-45 replaced the T-2 ‘Buckeye’ trainer and the TA-4 ‘Skyhawk’ trainer with an integrated training system that includes the aircraft, operations and instrument fighter simulators, academics, and training integration system.

Training Squadron Twenty One (VT-21)

May 1954 was the first time students were trained in a combat aircraft, the F9F 'Panther.' e 'Panthers' were replaced in January 1958 by another Grumman cat, the swept-wing F-9F8 'Cougar.' e squadron was re-designated VT-21 on May 21, 1960. Within the next year, the squadron flew 15,216 consecutive accident-free hours, and was the first advanced jet training squadron to accomplish this feat. In 1970, after 12

years of service, the 'Cougar' was replaced by the Douglas TA-4J 'Skyhawk.'

VT-21 set a record for advanced jet training squadrons in 1972. e instructors and students ofVT-21 logged a total of 60,850 accident-free hours. at same year, the squadron was presented with a Meritorious Unit Commendation.

A long list of awards attests to the squad¬ron's outstanding safety record over the years. e Admiral John H. Towers Flight Safety Award was presented to VT-21 in 1968. All 19 jet and propeller squadrons that were part of the Naval Training Command competed for this award. Training Squadron Twenty Two (VT-22) " e Golden Eagles"

formed on June 13, 1949, at Naval Auxiliary Air Station, Corpus Christi, to furnish jet transitional training for newly-designated naval aviators. Designated Advanced Training Unit SIX (ATU6), it received its first aircraft, a T V-I, in July of that year. ATU-6 was the first unit in the training command to instruct in jet aircraft.

After only two months, the unit transferred to NAS Whiting Field, Milton, Fla., and was re-designated Jet Transi-

tional Training Unit ONE (J'ITU-1). e squadron's m1ss10n was extended to include training of fleet pilots. During this period, the unit transitioned the U.S. Navy's Flight Demonstration Squadron, the "Blue Angels", to jet aircraft.

NAVAL AIR STATION KINGSVILLE

On Aug. 20, 1951, J'ITU-l moved to NAS Kingsville and was re-designated Advanced Training Unit THREE (ATU-3). Late in 1952, ATU-3 becameATU-200.

e squadron's mission consisted of training newly designated aviators in familiarization, formation tactics, instruments and navigation. ATU-200 was re-designated ATU-212, and with the new name came the mission of all-weather flight training.

In February 1958, ATU-212 began replacing its TV aircraft with the F9F-8 and F9F-8T "Cougar." e syllabus was also expanded to include ordnance delivery and carrier qualification. In May 1960, ATU-212 was redesignated VT-22. In September 1970, VT-22 transitioned to the TA-4J "Skyhawk," a two¬ seat version of the attack bomber employed by the Navy and Marine Corps in Viet-

nam. e squadron transitioned to the T-45 "Goshawk" in 1994.

Chief of Naval Air Training Aviation Maintenance Contracts Support

e Chief of Naval Air Training (CNATRA) Detachment for Maintenance/ Contracts is responsible for performing surveillance of Naval Air Training Command aviation maintenance contracts. It monitors contracts for the T-45 "Goshawk" aircraft. e 'Goshawk' and related ground training devices are the means by which Training Wing TWO, with Training Squadrons VT-21 and VT22, provide jet/strike training to student naval aviators at NAS Kingsville.

Currently, L-3 Vertex has the contract to provide aircraft maintenance on the T-45 and Rolls-Royce has the F405 power-by¬-the-hour engine contract. Although the contractors have their own quality control inspectors, the CNATRA Maintenance Detachment's mission is to ensure strict compliance. is is accomplished through a series of process audits, which are conducted by CNATRA personnel who have the appropriate training.

NAVSUP FLC Jacksonville Detachment NAS Kingsville's mission is to provide logistics support to NAS Kingsville, Training Air Wing TWO and other tenant commands. Comprised of aircraft refueling, liquid and aviator breathing oxygen (ABO), and liquid and gaseous nitrogen, the FLC Detachment supports flight operations for TW-2 and its T-45 jet trainer aircraft and transient flights.

Other functions include operating Retail Supply warehousing operations; providing receipt, stowage and issue of flight gear; packaging, shipping and receiving of Depot- level repairable for the contracted aviation maintenance and Ground Electronic maintenance shops; and providing general material support. e retail supply contract employees at this site also provide support for invoice certification and items being shipped to the local Defense Reutilization Material Organization (DRMO) on

board NAS Corpus Christi. FLC Det NAS Kingsville also handles postal operations for the installation.

NAS Kingsville is home to F Company, 7-15th Aviation Regiment, which is organized under 7th Battalion 158th Aviation Regiment, out of Fort Hood, Texas. e "Saints"' mission is to provide aeromedical evacuation (MEDEVAC) to

support division level units. F Company is comprised of four forward support medical teams (FSMT). Each FSMT supports brigade-size units. In a theater of operation, the "Saints"' primary mission is the expedient clearing of casualties off the battlefield. Aeromedical evacuation plays a critical role in maintaining our nation's fighting force.

e Auto Skills Center provides a friendly, safe and economical place to perform all types of repairs on your vehicle. ere are tools and equipment available for everything from normal maintenance to major overhauls. Personnel use the Center to repair many things including cars, trucks, boats, home appliances, and lawn mowers.

The Auto Skills Center has a great assortment of hand and power tools, in metric and SAE, as well as specialty tools. There are four bays with overhead lifts, and two bays with short rise body lifts. These are rented on an hourly basis, with most hand tools included. There are 12 additional enclosed bays without lifts for rent, available for storage and repair and all having compressed air and electricity. These are available on a day, week or monthly basis and include free use of most hand tools.

Diagnostic computers are available to assist you in diagnosing your vehicle. Additionally, a complete All-Data repair library is available on DVD for all years makes and models. e Texas State Inspection Station, located here, is open to everyone on base during regular business hours, Tuesday and Friday.

ere is also a tire repair facility with the newest style tire mounting machine and spin balancing machine. Brake repairs are a snap with the Center’s brake washing machine, and there is a drum and disk brake lathe on site. e welding bay has an AC/DC arc welder, a MIG and TIG machine, and an oxy/acetylene cutting torch, as well as a metal cutting saw.

Each room is furnished with beds, a refrigerator and an air conditioner/ neater. Adjacent to the lodge is a cookhouse with barbecue pits, electric stove and grill. Escondido Ranch is available for group activities such as parties, seminars, reunions and trail rides. Advance notice is required for scheduling such events, so please contact the Ranch at least 60 days prior to the event.

Camping - Twelve RV sites are available with electric, water and sewage hook-ups. Bring your RV or tent and enjoy the outdoors.

Hunting - e Ranch offers yearround hunting. To find out what game is in season, call theTexas Parks andWildlife Office regarding hunting in McMullen County at 1-800- 792-1112.

Aggressive conservation programs have increased the abundance of wildlife on the Ranch. Over 75 different types of birds can be seen. Hog, javelina, bird and deer hunting are very popular. Deer hunting is conducted on a drawing basis, and begins with archery in October and rifle from November to January. Call the Ranch for more information on the drawing process. Hog hunts are conducted monthly, February through August, around the full moon and are very successful. ese hunts are overnight events.

Fishing - Fish the Nueces River! All anglers are required to comply with Texas State Fishing Regulations.

You don't have to be a hunter or fisherman to enjoy the Ranch. ere are many other opportunities to enjoy the outdoors: camping, archery, hiking, fishing, relaxing, wildlife photography, bird watching, animal watching or watching a sunset without obstruction or interference.

ITT also sponsors monthly bus trips to various festivals, sports events, shopping centers, and concerts throughout South Texas.

e ITT office sells discount tickets for attractions such as Schlitterbahn, SeaWorld and Fiesta Texas in San Antonio, and the Texas State Aquarium, USS Lexington and the new Hurricane Alley Waterpark in Corpus Christi. ITT also has discount ticket packages for Disney World, Universal Studios, Blue Man's Group and Medieval Times and more! In addition, there are nine computers for; use. ey are connected to the internet with printers, an NMCI connection, numerous word-processing, spreadsheet and educational software programs, and instructional CDs. Special events are held throughout the year for both children and adults.

Outdoor Recreation is the place to go for your camping, fishing, picnicking and hunting needs. ere is a wide variety of equipment ready to rent for your recreational requirements. For those who enjoy water sports, Outdoor Recreation has motor boats, kayaks, and canoes equipped with life preservers, paddles and car carriers for trailers. For

campers, Outdoor Recreation has trailers, camp stoves, lanterns, water jugs, tents, cots and sleeping bags.

Outdoor Recreation also manages the hunting and fishing programs on base and is the sole provider for station fishing and programs on base and is the sole provider for station fishing and hunting permits. It manages two fresh-water ponds stocked with blue channel catfish and has complete fishing supplies including rods and reels, bait buckets and tackle. e base hunting program includes dove, quail, and turkey when in season. Outdoor Recreation provides complete information on hunting and fishing both on station and in the region.

Station picnic facilities are also maintained through this activity. Each pavilion has restroom facilities, playground equipment, BBQ pits and shade areas. ere are no fees for picnic facility use: however, reservations must be made in advance.

Enjoy Outdoor entertaining, BBQ or grilling? Rental equipment includes tables, chairs, ice chests and two 7ftBBQ pits on trailers, one of which is a smoker. Also available are utility trailers for moving furniture, vehicle trailers, gasoline generators, garden tillers ang augers.

Located behind Outdoor Recreation is a 13-slot RV park. All 13-slots have 10x10 concrete slabs with individual shelters and picnic tables. Five of the 13-slots have water, electricity and sewer with the remaining eight having only water and electricity. ere is a free on-site dump station available for use. e RV Park also has showers, bathrooms and a coin-operated laundry with large-capacity machines. e RV Park is open 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. Reservations may be made in person or by phone with a credit card and there are daily, weekly or monthly rates.

e CDC provides an environment that nurtures and challenges the growth and development of each child.

Developmentally appropriate activities and experiences are offered to meet the needs of each child. All meals and snacks are prepared in accordance with USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program guidelines. e CDC has been accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) for eight years.

Child Development Home Providers are active-duty military spouses who provide quality child care services in their homes for eligible children between 6 weeks and 12 years of age, on a full, part-time or drop-in basis. Hours are

flexible and care is excellent. Providers undergo an extensive background check, orientation training, and home inspections prior to authorization by the Commanding Officer. Homes are monitored on a regular basis and training is ongoing to ensure program quality. Each provider is enrolled in the Child and Adult Care Food Program to ensure children receive nutritious meals. Homes are equipped with state of the art materials and equipment.

Kingsville & Kleberg County

The City of Kingsville, located just west of the Gulf of Mexico in an area called "The Wild Horse Desert" by early settlers, is the birthplace of the American ranching industry. Kingsville is named for Captain Richard E. King, founder of the legendary King Ranch, which borders the city on three sides. The city was established on July4, 1904.

In 1853, Captain King purchased land that was once part of the Rincon de Santa Gertrudis Spanish Land Grant and changed the South Texas coastal plains forever. He fenced and cleared the land, fought off raiding Indians, and even moved an entire village from Mexico to the area. e residents of that village became some of Texas' first cowboys, and today, those "Kinenos" can still be

seen on the streets of downtown Kingsville. King's wife Henrietta continued the Ranch after his death. But toward the end of her life she began donating land to help the city grow. Her legacy lives on today in the churches, college and schools her countless land donations made possible.

Today, the King Ranch remains a working ranch, boasting over 60,000 cattle and 300 quarter horses and offers fabulous opportunities for nature lovers and birders. Visitors to South Texas can spend a day on the Ranch and see a variety of tropical and migratory birds, white tailed deer and javelinas. Group tours and packages, tailored specifically for each group, are also available.

Birdwatchers find a haven in Kingsville and the surrounding area. Over 450 species have been sighted on the more than one million acres of habitat comprised of shoreline, brush and arid

desert. is diverse habitat and Kingsville's location within the two greatest migratory flyways in the United States make it a prime destination for year¬ round birding opportunities.

Attractions in Kingsville, in addition to the King Ranch, include the John Connor Museum at Texas A&M-Kingsville and the King Ranch Museum. Together, they tell the story of Kingsville's colourful past, rich in history and cultural diversity. Historical downtown is reminiscent of America's old main streets, lined with specialty gift shops, a craft market, and of course, the King Ranch Saddle Shop.

Kingsville

Kingsville is the county seat of Kleberg County, Texas. e population was 26,213 at the 2010 census, with 8,943 households, and 6,134 families residing in the city. e population density was

1,848.8 people per square mile. ere were 10,427 housing units at an average density of753.8 per square mile.

e city's public schools are operated by the Kingsville Independent School District and Santa Gertrudis Independent School District. High schools (grades 9-12) include Henrietta M. King High School and Academy High School. Middle schools (grades 7-8) include Memorial Middle School and Santa Gertrudis.

ere are also two intermediate schools (grades S-6), Gillett Intermediate School and Santa Gertrudis. Elementary schools (grades 2-4) include Perez Elementary School, Kleberg Elementary School and Santa Gertrudis Elementary School.

Primary schools (grades PK-1) include Harrel Primary School, Harvey Primary School, Lamar Primary School, and Santa Gertrudis. Alternative schools include K.E.Y.S. Academy and LASER School. Private schools include

1904 Train Museum

Situated in Historic Downtown Kingsville and, of course, next to the train tracks on Kleberg Avenue is one of Kingsville's special treasures. Contained inside are jewels of Kingsville's history.

Although small by larger cities standards, the 1904 Train Museum is a step back in time when rail travel and shipping were the safest and quickest ways to move people, cattle or goods. Visitors will discover artefacts dating back to the early 1900's through the 1960's when rail travel no longer held the sparkle and excitement it had enjoyed for so many years, and goods and people were now moved by 4-wheeled trucks and automobiles. e little Depot closed in 1980, but was remodelled and re-opened as a museum in June 2005.

Bishop

Bishop is located just eight miles northeast of the air station, located on U.S. Highway 77 and Farm-to-Market Road 70, about 30 miles southwest of Corpus Christi in Nueces County.

e city of Bishop was a planned town from its beginning. In 1910, F.Z. Bishop, an insurance agent turned promoter, acquired 2,300 acres of land in South Texas along the railroad line and laid out a model community surrounded by farm tracts. Bishop laid out zoned business, industrial and residential districts, and built a water and power system. In just two years, the town grew to a population of 1,200. Bishop closed his operation as World War I started. He had sold more than 80,000 acres of land and established a prospering community.

e City of Bishop is served by the Bishop Consolidated Independent School District, which has five schools: Bishop High (Grades 9-12); Luehrs Junior High (Grades 7-8); Bish-

op Elementary (Grades 4-6); Petronila Elementary (Grades PK-5); and Bishop Primary (Grades PK-3). Bishop High School opened in the fall of 2010.

NAVAL AIR STATION KINGSVILLE

Ricardo

Ricardo, on U.S. Highway 77 South, seven miles south of Kingsville in Kleberg County, began as a railroad siding on the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway. In 1908, Robert Kleberg, Sr., manager of the King Ranch, asked the railroad to build a depot at the site. e station was given the name Richard, which was later changed to the Spanish form, Ricardo. e land around Ricardo, part of 63,000 acres put up for sale by the King Ranch when the railroad was built, was all sold by 1917.

As settlers moved to the area, an independent school district was formed. In 1913, a schoolhouse was erected, and two teachers were employed. As the years passed and the population grew, the school expanded. Electricity came to the community in 1941, reducing

labor by the use of machinery. In time, dairying became unprofitable, and the cows were sold. In addition, the poultry industry and vegetable growing ceased to be important. Since the late 1980's cotton has been the principal crop around Ricardo. As of 2010, the population of Ricardo was 1,048.

Ricardo has an elementary / junior high school. e school's mascot is a Yellow Jacket. Since there is no high school, students in grades 9-12 attend either Kaufer High School in Riviera or H.M. King High School in Kingsville.

Riviera

Riviera is an unincorporated community in Kleberg County, located about 11 miles south of Kingsville on U.S. Highway 77. Riviera was founded in 1906 by eodore Fredrick Koch, a land

promoter, who purchased land from the King Ranch to sell to land seekers.

Koch built a town site along the St. Louis, Brownsville, and Mexico Railway and named it Riviera after the French Riviera.

Riviera is served by Riviera Independent School District, which consists of three schools: Riviera-Kaufer High School (9-12), De La Paz Middle School (6-8), and Nanny Elementary School (PK-5).
