“Porsche Parade” is the official magazine of The Porsche Club of Victoria Inc. (ACN 005 727 0942)

Welcome to the first issue of Porsche Parade for 2022. Finally, life is getting back to normal, and we have a full calendar of Club events featured in this issue.

Editor Ron Widdison mobile: 0418 359 450 email: editor@pcv.com.au

The cover of this issue features the Club Person of the Year Award being renamed in Barbara and Will Darvall’s honour. A fitting tribute to a couple who have given so much to the Club over its 47year history. Congratulations to Barb and Will! Can you believe it’s nearly 25 years since the 996 was launched? The 996 series has become the entry level Porsche and certainly the best bang for your buck in entering the Porsche ownership market. Early on the model suffered poor build quality and IMS failures which dogged its reputation and reflects its market price today. 24 years on and the gremlins have been sorted making the 996 the bargain of the marque. Porsche’s marketing department have recently released a tribute car - the 911 Classic Club Coupe for the Porsche Club of North America with similar design cues as the 997 Sport Classic with its double bubble

Porsche Parade is only available to financial members of the Porsche Club of Victoria Inc. A minimum of four issues are published annually. Not for individual sale. Contributions:

It’s not clear who will own this one-off model but the Project Gold 993 which was also a one off sold for 3.1 million US!

Contributions, with quality photographs, are invited. Digital photographs should be 300 dpi jpeg or tiff files. They should be sent to editor@pcv.com.au.

The 996 is an undervalued generation and hopefully this design study will spark a new interest in the model.

president’s message

2021/22 Mark Horton Andrews President president@pcv.com.au

Melanie Treloar Vice President vp@pcv.com.au

Welcome to the latest edition of Porsche Parade. The Porsche Club of Victoria is back! doing what we love and there is unbridled enthusiasm rippling through the Club. As we came out of restrictions last November, the Club embarked on an ambitious program of events. Many members expressed their pleasure at being able to enjoy their Porsche in the company of other enthusiasts again, and pleasingly this has continued into the New Year, with more than twenty events already ranging from the combined Track and Sandown social experience to Register runs and Club Nights. My role as President gives me close opportunity to observe the work of our many volunteers. I am so impressed and thankful. Much of this work is not visible and is essential to the proper running of the Club. The various Committees are in full swing and owe their success to the dedication of our committed volunteers. The Competition year is on in earnest with Events at Phillip Island, Haunted Hills, and the Mobil1 Sandown 360 Regularity already completed. Competition Director Andrew Smith is enjoying running events – not cancelling them! Phillip Island Sprints The Competition ecosystem – Officials, Drivers and Support groups are up and going once again. The Club marshalling group is a highly professional and reliable team of competition volunteers for the club. And we are on the lookout – as always - for more volunteers! Under the direction of Linley Baxter, the social side of the Club is sizzling. The Social Committee has planned a full program of activities throughout the year. Following feedback from our major member survey last year, the Social Committee is continuing our very popular events whilst exploring a range of innovative and different types and styles. Watch this space…

Food and Wine Appreciation Dinner - upstairs at The European, was an example of the innovation underway in the Social Committee. Our Registers’ Director Paul Sbrissa leads our Register Captains from the front (often from his front seat). This group has already kicked-off five Register Runs including a Cayenne/Macan run. It is pleasing to see the SUV group reinvigorated with the enthusiasm of new Run Captain. Porsche Parade magazine stands alone amongst Porsche Club magazines in the Country in that much of the content is provided by our members. Of course, this has been severely constrained over the past two years due to lack of activity. Our Editor, Ron Widdison has produced high quality magazines and content despite zero activity at times. I would like to acknowledge and thank Ron for his efforts through this very difficult period. At times in the history of our Club it is important to pause and reflect on significant contributions, and to acknowledge and celebrate them. In this edition of Porsche Parade, we announce the naming of the Club Member of the Year Award in honour of two highly popular members. And finally, it is fitting to note that 2022 is an important year for the Porsche Club Community. On May 26th, 1952, the very first Porsche Club was founded as the Porsche Club Hohensyburg, known today as Porsche Club Westfalen. Happy 70th Anniversary!

from pit lane Hi everyone and welcome to the first edition of Porsche Parade and From Pit Lane for 2022. After a horrid previous 12 months of missed track days due to Covid-19, it was with great trepidation that we ventured down to Phillip Island with a full field to resume our love with competition. With reduced restrictions, it was great to be able to mingle with fellow members and reminisce about what could have been in 2021. The highlight of the morning was the presentation of the Club and Outright Champion trophy to Stefan Wojciechowski for his achievements over the 2021 season. Well done Stefan. Please see the full report further on for all results and photos. From the picturesque and sunny Phillip Island, our next event took us to Haunted Hills just outside of Moe, where the weather could not have been more different to Phillip Island.

Cold wet and windy conditions turned this normally tight and tricky 3 in 1 track into a minefield!!! Grip on cold tyres was at a premium with plenty of opposite lock regularly required. There were some outstanding drives from our members in what could only be described as difficult conditions. Our gratitude and thanks must go to the tireless work from the marshals who stood in the rain all day. We all must remember that without them the show couldn’t go on!!

Stefan Wojciechowski receiving the Don Tryhorn memorial for Outright Champion.

The highlight of the day was the hot food and drink provided by the team from the Coffee van. I look forward to being able to provide a full schedule of events during 2022 especially the Porsche Club Mobil 1 360 Regularity in early April. For now that’s all “From Pit Lane”. the socialist Your Social Committee is now meeting monthly and there are 18 people on the Committee. Why so often and why so many? Last year’s survey told us what you wanted to do and the membership numbers tell us there is a lot of you who want to participate. While bigger events are sometimes possible venue size is often the limiting factor. The solution therefore is more events and more events need more organisers and more meetings to coordinate them. Late last year we welcomed Greg Burns, Adam de Guara and Peta-Slack Smith. Werner Engel joined us earlier this year. Welcome all. Of these Greg Burns was first out of the blocks with his never before event, a high end mid-week wine and food appreciation evening. This sumptuous evening at the Tea Room in The European restaurant was an outstanding success and the first time the Porsche Club has asked participants not to bring their cars ! The other new committee members are incubating more innovations so look out for more surprises to come. On to events so far. As reported elsewhere 340+ members enjoyed our first Club Night, a superb BBQ outdoors at the Fox Museum where we were

manage to find challenging and scenic traffic roads so close to our huge metropolis. Due to possible clashes with Melbourne’s pre GP events we have delayed until June Clyde White’s car display event originally scheduled for March. Behind the scenes we are working on further analysis of the member survey. We are also assessing mapping systems to bring reliable digital route instructions to your phone or your car’s screen. Club Night at the Fox Museum also treated to an amazing display of very rare Porsches. The event attracted a lot of attention and now several of our hospitality suppliers are taking a leaf out of Russell Sturzaker’s event playbook. February and March saw a trio of Social runs, with Geoff Mould’s Cape Kitchen Run treating us to the magnificent ridge roads of East Gippsland. David Turner and Alvaro Del Gallo collaborated to produce a wonderful run to the West of Melbourne topped off with a magnificent lunch at Truffleduck in Fyansford near Geelong. The trifecta was the highly praised Kon Gogos Autumn run to the Growling Frog along great roads North of Melbourne. It never ceases to amaze me that our organisers

People often ask us how they can help. A great recent example was from members Julia and Colin Anderson who offered to organise a run for us. Being experienced run organisers they are now in charge of the Last Blast for 2022 which promises to be another wonderful event. Here’s to lots more Porsche socialising. Darvall Club Member of the Year Award Stories: Ron Widdison, Andrew Bonwick, Geoffrey Mould and Mark Horton Andrews

He was an avid competitor for many years in the club as well as broader State and National competition. In the early 2000s he introduced the club marshalling group which has grown steadily since to provide a highly professional and reliable set of competition officials for the club. Will is a past President of the Club, was a joint Club Member of the Year in 2006 and was also recognised with Life membership in 2012.

At times in the history of an organisation it is important to pause and reflect on significant contributions, and to acknowledge and celebrate them. On behalf of the Club’s General Committee, I am delighted to announce the naming of the Porsche Club of Victoria Club Member of the Year Award in honour of William Darvall and Barbara Darvall. The award will now be named the Darvall Club Member of the Year Award. Back in 1975, Barb Darvall (then Clearihan) attended the first meeting of the Club with husband Brian. Barb joined the Committee in the following year, served as Secretary for two years, and joined the Committee again for a further four years in the late eighties. Barb was a contributor to the Porsche Club of Victoria book 1975-2015 the first 40 years, providing valuable historical reflections on the early years of the club. Barb was celebrated as the Club Member of the Year in 1985 and was awarded Life membership in 2012. Barb is a generous and popular stalwart of Club events, including numerous Club Nights, Social and Register runs, Tours, and Competition events, participating as both Competitor and Official. Will Darvall was a founding member of the Club having also attended the first meeting. 12

PORSCHE PARADE

Will was instrumental as Editor in production of the Porsche Club of Victoria book 1975-2015 the first 40 years. Together with magazine Editor Ron Widdison, Will is an integral part of the enormously popular ‘What’s in Your Garage” series. Like Barb, Will is a popular Club member and regular attendee of Club events. Ron Widdison: Clubs are built by volunteers who share a common interest, and the PCV has been fortunate enough to have had many who have put their heart and soul into building the successful Club we have today. Will and Barb Darvall are not just amazing PCV volunteers, they are also Porsche people through and through! In 1969 Barb bought her first Porsche, a 1965 912, progressing through 356s, 914s, SC’s and 911s. In 1974 Will bought his first Porsche, a Black 911S sporting the number plate MY911. It was in 1977 he bought his new daily driver, a holy grail 2.7 RS which he ran in the Vic, SA and Australian Hillclimb championships, winning the SA and Australian title in the under 3 litre sports car class. In the final round of the Vic title, he put the car up a tree, destroying it and nearly himself! And to top it off he even built himself a 550 Spyder replica sporting 911 brakes, engine, and gearbox! Both founding members, being present at the first club night in 1975 they got to know each other socially through club events.

Barb and Robin, marshalling at Phillip Island They lost contact in the 80’s while raising their families but reunited in 2002 through Will’s famous 550 Spyder replica at a 356 concours event where they said hello, got married and lived happily ever after! In 2000 I was lucky enough to meet my then neighbour Barb who introduced me to her lovely Guards Red 3.2 Carrera; two months later I had my own 3.2 Carrera, and the rest is history. I have been lucky enough to call Barb and Will friends for the past 20 odd years. It’s not often you meet truly special people, but Bab and Will certainly fit the bill. Their enthusiasm and passion for the Marque, PCV and life has brought them as much joy from the club as they have given. In 2009 I asked Will to write the article for a new feature for Porsche Parade. Will agreed and we spent the next 12 years (46 editions) travelling Victoria for “What’s in Your Garage” I am forever grateful to him for organising and writing the stories and the time we spent together. Quite often these types of honours are made posthumously. I am so happy that the Committee has named the Club member of the year after Will and Barb at this time so they can feel the love and appreciation from the Club for their lifetime of contributions over the past 47 years.

On the Dummy grid at Winton Andrew Bonwick: Barb and Will have been at the core of the club the whole time I have been a member, as stalwarts of the social and competition aspects of our club and in my early days whizzing along in their beautiful 550 replica. They both have significant insight as motor sport competitors and into the marque, and the relationship between Porsche and the Club. They have also been instrumental in bringing the variety of Porsche marque clubs closer together since the schisms of the 90’s.

Looking dapper at the PCV Annual Ball

You’d be proud too if you built your own 550!

Will was always very particular, whether that be about safety, or organisation of a motor sport event, or chasing down every errant punctuation mistake in the state Government’s model constitution before it was adopted by the club, grammatically perfect, in 2013. Their vignettes about the people and places know no bounds. Their motor sport knowledge has been particularly helpful with Will being a mentor to decades of club officials and Barb’s insight as Marshal after she finished her racing career. The professional strength of our marshal group is a tribute to their consistent participation, broad motor sport capability and their elegant focus on continuously developing the experience that club members have when they participate in club events. Geoffrey Mould: Both Will and Barb Darvall have become very close friends, a friendship that began way back in 1985 when my wife Barbara and I joined the Club. Not long after joining, Barb Darvall and I together were the total of the Social Committee in charge of the Annual Gala Dinner and Awards Night. With so many more events to cover today that small beginning became the genesis of a much broader social committee of around eighteen. Will has been the backbone of the club as can be seen by his contribution over many years to Competition Events as Clerk of Course and other administrative rolls within the Competition Committee, together with the logging of the history of the club culminating in the publication of a book and What’s in Your Garage for the magazine.

Barb Darvall’s contribution after serving on the General Committee and after giving away competing in sprints has been the “Caller” for many years at sprint events. Between the two of them individually and as a team it is evidence of their commitment to our club. A Club which has grown to be the envy of many other car Clubs. My wife Barbara and I continue to be close friends and share many an enjoyable time with the Darvalls. Congratulations to the Darvalls on the Club’s recognition of their contribution over many years; a worthy accolade to them both.

personalities, and warm and kind support. Will has been a mentor as a Competition Official, and I have relied on Barb’s knowledge and experience many times at the Track.

Mark Horton Andrews: I have enjoyed Barb and Will’s good humour, engaging

The Club Member of the Year award recognises the most conspicuous contribution by a member to the general activities and benefits of the membership of the Club over the entire year, based on a range of factors. It is entirely appropriate that it be named after two of the Club’s longest serving, avid and most generous members.

911 Classic Club Coupe For the Porsche Club of America

ISSUE 1, 2022

17

Stuttgart. “No. 001/001” – the badge on the dashboard sums up the rarity of this Porsche model. Guided by the principles of the newly launched Porsche Sonderwunsch programme, the experts at Porsche Classic created a car that is absolutely unique. In just two and a half years, a used 1998 911 Carrera (Type 996) was transformed into the Porsche 911 Classic Club Coupe, spelled the American way without an accent, because the car was made for the Porsche Club of America (PCA), the sport car brand’s oldest and largest club. The vehicle’s special features include its Sport Grey Metallic paintwork, double-dome roof, Fuchs rims and fixed rear spoiler in the ducktail style of the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 from 1972. Many of the exterior and interior details are customised with PCA’s signature Club Blue. The centre sections of the sports seats, like the door panels, are made of intricate woven leather in a Pepita houndstooth pattern. Technically – and to some extent visually – the vehicle has also been converted to a second-generation 911 GT3 including the 3.6-litre engine from that model generating 280 kW / 381 PS. The chassis and brakes also come from the GT3 of that generation. The idea for this unique factory car arose during a meeting between representatives of the Porsche Club of America and Alexander Fabig, now Head of Individualisation and Classic at Porsche, and designer Grant Larson of Style Porsche. To keep it secret, the vehicle was known internally as “Project Grey,” a nickname reminiscent of “Project Gold,” the 911 Turbo (Type 993) with an air-cooled engine that Porsche Classic built in 2018 from original parts. However, the main source of inspiration for the 911 Classic Club Coupe was the 911 Sport Classic (Type 997) presented in 2009. With Sport Classic Grey paintwork, a double-dome roof, ducktail and exclusive interior details, this limited series quickly gained cult status and has long been a sought-after collector’s item. “The Type 996 is unjustly overshadowed by the other 911 ranges. That’s why we were happy to choose it as the basis for demonstrating all the things we can do with Porsche Classic and the recently expanded Sonderwunsch programme of Porsche AG,” says Alexander Fabig, Head of Individualisation and Classic. “In 2009, the 911 Sport Classic, a limited series of 250, had already generated worldwide interest. However, this special model was not sold in the US. With this one-off, we’ve now managed to bring a similarly exciting vehicle concept to the U.S. as well.” “We wanted to work together to create something unique that would generate enthusiasm,” adds Tom Gorsuch, President of the Porsche Club of America (PCA). “The fact that the finished Porsche 911 Classic Club Coupe looks so sleek and natural is what’s really incredible about this challenging project.”

18

Exterior: Double-dome roof and ducktail are the stand-out features. The Porsche 911 Classic Club Coupe is painted in Sport Grey Metallic, inspired by the Sport Classic Grey of the 911 Sport Classic (Type 997). Twin stripes running across the bonnet, roof and rear spoiler create a particularly dynamic look. These are painstakingly painted in light Sport Grey, while on the 997 they were a foil trim that was darker than the body colour. Two fine lines in Club Blue mark the outline of the stripes. The side trim in the shape of a hockey stick is painted in light Sport Grey and bears the words “Classic Club Coupe” and a line in Club Blue. The double-dome roof is also a detail with a motorsport connection. Tall racing drivers used to bulge the roofs to make enough headroom for wearing a helmet – the modern roof design alludes to this. The Style Porsche design concept 911 Panamericana from 1989, the Carrera GT and the 911 Sport Classic also had a roof shaped like this. Today, the double-dome roof is a classic design feature of many limited series from Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur and the 911 GT models. The fixed rear spoiler made of glass-fibre-reinforced plastic takes the shape of the legendary “ducktail” of the 911 RS 2.7 from 1972. The third brake light is built into it. The model designation “Classic Club Coupe” appears in the middle between the tail lights. The unique car runs on 18-inch forged wheels whose cloverleaf shape immediately identifies them as legendary Fuchs rims. The spokes are painted in High-Gloss Black. Uniquely, the rim base has a Porsche logo and a thin line in Club Blue. The hub covers are adorned with a coloured Porsche crest. The brake callipers are painted Black and also have a Porsche logo in Club Blue. The mirror attachment piece is painted in High-Gloss Black. Both wings have inlaid “Classic Series” badges. Interior: Pepita houndstooth woven leather on seats and door panels The interior is sporty and sophisticated, and above all highly individual. This becomes clear as soon as you open the doors and see the “Classic Club Coupe” logo on the stainless steel door sill trims. Black leather dominates the interior in combination with slate grey, partially perforated Alcantara on the roof lining and pillars. The fact that the car is an absolute one-off is underlined by the “911 Classic Club Coupe No. 001/001” dashboard badge, mentioned earlier. The centre panels of the sports seats, like the door panels, bear a Pepita houndstooth pattern woven from black and slate grey leather. Porsche first used intricately woven leather in the 911 Sport Classic (Type 997). What’s new here is that the Pepita look has been woven in a twill, which means that the fabric runs diagonally. Club Blue decorative

stitching softens the classic look of the seats. “911 Classic Club Coupe” is embroidered in this contrasting colour in the headrests. The standard three-spoke steering wheel that was fitted in the 996 has been upgraded in the same way, with Club Blue thread and leather used for the decorative stitching on the rim and the 12 o’clock mark. The round instruments are customised in a similar way to the 911 Sport Classic. The rev counter, for example, has two grey stripes with lines on the sides in Club Blue and the “911 Classic Club Coupe” logo. The Porsche Classic Communication Management Plus (Sirius XM-ready) infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Google® Android Auto is also on board. By special request, the start screen on the seven-inch display was changed to show the vehicle designation “Classic Club Coupe”. Selected accessories from the Porsche Classic product range have been modified in terms of the material or craft methods used, making them unique to match the special status of “Project Grey”. These include the custom-made car cover, the vehicle key in the car colour with a leather case, and the tool bag made of woven leather in a Pepita houndstooth pattern. A touring bag is also included. How a used car was given a new lease of life The base vehicle is a black 911 Carrera, built in 1998. Neglected and in poor condition, it was parked at a dealership in Columbia, Virginia, where PCA executive director Vu Nguyen found it. The start of its second life began with a flight across the Atlantic. The 996 was transported to its home country and taken to the Porsche Classic workshop near the main plant in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. As with a full restoration, the experts completely disassembled the vehicle. Inspired by the GT3, the bodyshell was rebuilt and strengthened using new original parts as well as newly developed components. For the chassis, as well as the brakes and powertrain, in other words the engine and manual transmission, the experts opted for second-generation components that were also available in the US. The design was carried out simultaneously to the restoration of the vehicle. The experts from Porsche Individualisation and Classic and from Style Porsche drew up proposals and regularly discussed them with the PCA.

Naturally, the most intensive adaptation work took place on the special features of the 911 Classic Club Coupe: the double-dome roof and the fixed rear spoiler. This meant the part of the body between the rear window and ducktail had to be handmade. The biggest challenge in the interior, on the other hand, was to harmonise the strengths of the new material with the geometry of the surfaces in the 996’s interior. This was where the many years of expertise of a saddler proved their worth. Standing in for the valuable one-off, a test vehicle went through extensive trial runs at test sites including Weissach in Germany, Nardò in Italy and Idiada in Spain. These included endurance runs at top speed. However, the test vehicle was dismantled, ensuring the final product is truly a one-off. The technical modifications to the 911 Classic Club Coupe were evaluated by a team of experts from Porsche Individualisation and Classic, Porsche Cars North America and the Porsche Development Centre in Weissach. The aerodynamics were tuned in the wind tunnel. The overall vehicle was approved after a road test by the Porsche Development Centre in Weissach. About the Porsche 911 Type 996 (1997–2006) In 1997, with the Type 996, the fifth generation of the 911, Porsche converted the engines from air to water cooling in order to be prepared for increasingly stringent emissions regulations. In the Type 996, the 3.6-litre naturally aspirated engine of the 911 GT3 initially produced 360 PS, and later 381 PS. ISSUE 1, 2022

19

The body was completely new and unprecedentedly sleek. The unusual shape of the front headlights was as characteristic as it was polarising. The interior benefitted from the larger exterior, so that the 996 offered more elbow room and a more spacious feel than its predecessor. The dashboard also had a new look, with the five circular instruments linking into each other. Between 1997 and 2006, Porsche produced a total of 175,262 Type 996 vehicles. Porsche Classic takes over responsibility for vehicles ten years after their end of production. This means the experts are currently already looking after the Type 996. About Porsche Classic Porsche Classic aims to preserve and maintain legendary vehicles and the latest classics. Decades of experience with classic Porsche vehicles make the experts the right contacts when it comes to original parts, restoration and repair. The first point of contact for customers with historic Porsche vehicles are the, currently 78, certified Porsche Classic partners worldwide, including four Porsche Classic centres. As part of its Co-Creation strategy, Porsche is reinterpreting its legendary Sonderwunsch programme from the late 1970s, which will enable it to design customised, one-off cars. Depending on the age of the vehicle in question, either the technical experts at Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur or the specialists at Porsche Classic will take care of implementation. 20

The Inaugural PCV Wine and Food Dinner - Subtle, Silky and Sexy Wednesday 2nd March 2022 Story & Photos by Megan Hiscock & Michael Benett Now that we have your attention, we’ll get back to that later! The inaugural PCV Food and Wine Dinner started on a warm sultry evening in The Tea Room at The European. The French inspired evening kicked off in style with a beautiful glass of Bonnaire Grand Cru champagne accompanied by lovely rock oyster canapes, a wonderful preview of what was in store for the remainder of the evening. This was also a great opportunity for the lucky 35 attendees to meet and mingle before taking a seat at the beautifully laid out tables, complete with individual copies of our specially tailored food and wine menu and a map of the French wine regions highlighting the origins of the evening’s wines, that were also all available for purchase on the evening at discounted prices.

Finally it was onto the last course which was a Ewes milk cheese from the Pyrenees with quince paste and fennel seed lavosh. This was served with your author’s favorite wine of the night, the Chateau Mont Redon Lirac from the Rhone Valley, as well as a Chateauneuf du Pape, also from the Rhone Valley. Both wines and the cheese provided a fitting finish to a fabulous meal.

Once seated, our organizer/master of ceremonies/food and wine guru, Mr. Greg Burns, welcomed us all and provided a run through of the festivities for the evening, including an introduction to Dan, our personal Sommelier and French wine expert. Other social committee members in attendance; Linley Baxter, Adam De Guara, Geoff Mould, Melanie Treloar and Clyde White, also introduced themselves to the group and made some introductory remarks.

It’s fair to say the inaugural PCV Food and Wine Dinner was a roaring success and we eagerly await the next one.

Whilst waiting for appetizer, Dan provided a rundown of the champagne offered on arrival, as well as the champagne region, highlighting the continuing emergence of some great smaller champagne houses to rival the big names that we all know and love. We were then walked through the two Alsace Rieslings that were paired beautifully with the delicious appetiser of scallop crudo, pickled cucumber and ajo blanco sauce. Dan also informed us that the head chef was personally preparing the meal for us tonight, a treat usually reserved for the main restaurant below. Entrée of Fried Zucchini Flowers stuffed with crab and smoked honey was absolutely delicious and again paired extremely well with the two Chablis selected for this course. Dan again provided great insights on the wines and the region, although we think he may have started to find it a little more difficult to hold everyone’s attention as drinks were enjoyed and conversations around the table became more animated and lively. We also got to meet a new member, Dale Thuema, who ran us through a few of the Porsches in his stable. On to Plat Principal which was perfectly cooked Duck breast and confit leg accompanied byradicchio, pickled cherries and some beautifully prepared fresh green beans. Now to the Subtle, Silky and Sexy, Dan’s descriptors for one of the Burgundy’s accompanying the duck; a descriptor that certainly took everyone’s fancy and made us all sit up and take notice! 22

Everybody was having such a fantastic time that, after staff kindly reminded us that it was closing time, a number of us wandered down the road to the Windsor Hotel for a quick nightcap taking in views of parliament house and making the most of a beautiful Melbourne autumn evening.

Phillip Island greeted us in glorious sunshine for the first of the 2022 season.

very confident Cape Barren Geese who wanted to play “chicken” with us.

Warm air, warm temperatures and a hint of humidity meant a perfect day for socialising, but not so good for fast track times.

Alan Rosedie Din posted a PB in the slightly cooler morning session in his 997.1 Cup car with an impressive 1:38.7 which was around 3 seconds better than his previous best. Looks like the long break brought out the competitive juices!!!

The day began with the usual drivers briefing where we were finally able to recognise the achievement of our 2021 Club and Outright Champion Stefan Wojciechowski. Stefan was presented with the club trophy and a much deserved warm round of applause from his fellow members. Well done Stefan. With a full field of over 100 competitors including 12 in entrée, it was great for everyone to be back on track again after a very lean 2021 season. The run groups took to the track with a long awaited roar as our Covid hybinatded engines came to life. The morning sessions proceeded without incident, although there were some

Results A class had Bill Toohey take the chocolates with another impressive time of 1:49, and only 0.6 seconds separating Bill, Guy in second and Peter Jordon in third. B class had DJ (Danny Junior) beating the old man Danny Loypur for the honours.

Over the lunch break we were treated to a standing start demonstration from some of our members who are competing in the Vic State Series this year. As all of our track days are started as a rolling start from pit lane, it was great to see these cars banging on the rev limiter and then the launch control getting them off the line super quick. Good luck to these guys this year.

Classic class saw Mark (the radish farmer) Chrzanowski lead home Grant (the Colonel) Stephenson.

After the lunch break the runs continued without too much fuss, just a lot of smoke from a slight oil leak in one of the entrée cars which provided a large plume in the car park. Late in the day when the temperature cooled a little, some of those who stayed for the last session recorded their best times for the day.

GT class had Stefan set a new track record for his class of 1:13.466, well done.

Cup class saw Jacob Li out front. Good luck to Jacob who will compete in the Porsche Carrera Cup Challenge this year. This is the second tier of Porsche Carrera Cup, so we wish him all the best.

M class had Greg Muller in his Cayman and Open saw Rodney Gordon ahead of Sally-Anne. Look forward to seeing you all “From Pit Lane” at the very unpredictable Haunted Hills.

Social Run to Cape Kitchen, Phillip Island Sunday, 6 February 2022 Story: Rob and Sylvia Rogers Photos: Neville Sampson Run notes and maps: Geoffrey Mould After the Club’s several attempts to have a the Spring Run and re-scheduling due to COVID-19 lockdowns, we finally got to catch up our friends in Warburton on Sunday 6th February, for a Spring/Summer run. For many the first run was actually an hour navigating through traffic and roadworks from home to Warburton, but it was a relief getting out of the suburbs and into the hills where our cars belong – aside from on the track. The run from Warburton to the Cape Kitchen restaurant in Newhaven on Phillip Island was a long one – but I didn’t hear any complaints with the opportunity to get out of second gear and thread our way through the windy roads through the valleys and hills around Powelltown Tarago forest mountains and then climb up to the Drouin-Korumburra Ridge Road, with its spectacular views down to the farmlands to the east and Westernport Bay to the West. Geoff did a really good job selecting the route for this run and with the usual CFA morning tea feast COVID cancelled, the run whet our appetite for the renown Cape Kitchen lunch. The run was punctuated with a short caffeine fix at Drouin and it was interesting to see other car and bike clubs now out and about, post COVID. There was a long train of 38 Porsches ranging from the early 911’s to the current 992 models, all driven at spirited pace and within the speed limits - generally. It was a showroom on wheels and with the sunny weather, many with the tops down or half down with the Targas. Travelling along behind a mix of cars, you could see the DNA of the original Porsche in the shape of all the cars , but the cornering speed differences between the older and newer models was evident with later model 4WD and traction control and wider rear tyres holding the road so much better. The Cape Kitchen restaurant is set amongst the sand dunes on Cape Woolamai, with vistas out over the Bass Straight and is soon to be complimented with a massive Hot Springs Spa Centre between the restaurant and the highway, (maybe include a spa after the next run Geoff). The menu was something different with a serve yourself selection of Entree and Mains complimented with a great selection of local wines. Between courses the club welcomed new members Goran Grdic, Deborah Lane, Russell Phillips, Tony Schibeci and Christian Seisun; each presented with a complimentary bottle of wine. Overall, if was a great day mixing good food and a great run and we look forward to the next one.

Twice delayed, our ‘Spring’ Run to Truffleduck in Fyansford finally happened on a pleasant Sunday morning commencing at our meeting point - the BP service station at Rockbank. It was only four months late, due of course to delays caused by Covid. As they say, all things come to those who wait, and this particular run, expertly organised by David and Jennie Turner, together with Alvaro and Maria Del Gallo was well worth the wait.

As for the lunch venue, Truffleduck, just outside Geelong in Fyansford, was superb, an ideal setting for our group. A great place to catch up outside in the well-established gardens to enjoy canapes and drinks, stretch our legs and chat before heading indoors to the recently (very nicely) refurbished restaurant space, with its delightful indoor/outdoor set up that was simply perfect on this fine, warm summer day.

Attracting around 90 eager members, including five new members, we enjoyed a fairly seamless run through attractive countryside, on mainly excellent roads through the Pentland Hills to Ballan, onto Mount Egerton where we were shadowed by a seemingly endless number of large, looming wind turbines. From there we headed south towards Meredith before heading south east to Maude, which provided a very attractive valley vista. Our conga line of very diverse, pristine Porsches weaved through many hitherto unknown parts of the region, and despite a couple of jiggly stretches of road and the odd depression (i.e pothole) it was a very rewarding drive.

In keeping with the very appealing surrounds we enjoyed a delicious meal and terrific service from the friendly Truffleduck team. Thank you. As is usual, bottles of wine were raffled, with four lucky winners, including new member Tracey Watson. Nice one Tracey, we hope this completed a very enjoyable first PCV run for you.

Most of us managed to follow the clear run notes and we were largely untroubled by other vehicles, a particularly refreshing change from those runs where, through no fault of the organisers, our groups are spread out amongst a cavalcade of utes, passenger cars, trucks and various slow moving traffic. That we were able to stick together for almost the entirety of the 170 kilometre run was really appreciated by all, and allowed us to coordinate our arrival at the designated car park. The drive course gave us all the opportunity to really enjoy a sense of a shared experience, with a long line of Porsches up front and behind, as we put our prized sports cars through their paces.

Congratulations again to Maria, Alvaro, Jennie and David - this drive day was a winner!

After enjoying a laughter-filled lunch, catching up with old friends after so many delays, and meeting new members, we filtered out of the venue and most of us endured the joyless and monotonous M1 journey back to Melbourne, a stark contrast to the joyful drive day we had experienced only a few short hours earlier.

Of course, no PCV run is complete without a couple of missed turns, especially within such a big group, but the nature of the run meant that those who missed a turn could easily reattach to the main group without much trouble. Although late summer was quite dry, and the countryside was less verdant than earlier in the year, it was still easy to appreciate the charm of rolling countryside around the Brisbane Ranges, Barrabool Hills, Ceres, Bannockburn and the like. The golden plains and undulating landscapes were a delight. A big thumbs up to the organisers, for this was a very well designed run.

PCV member’s well-known Porsche parts business for sale One of the world’s leading Porsche spare parts businesses started and owned by a well-known PCV member of the past 43 years, is now for sale. After more than 30 years’ operation, globally-known aPorschaPart Pty.Ltd. is looking for a new owner due to the retirement of its founder and long-time Porsche enthusiast and PCV member, Dennis O’Keefe. O’Keefe, who joined the Club with his wife Santa in 1979 says Porsche knowledge would be an advantage, but not essential to operate the business, due to the increasing demand by enthusiasts around the world for Porsche parts in order to maintain the estimated 70 per cent of all the cars built since 1948 on the road, many of which do not have access to new parts to maintain. “Parts fore many of the early cars and racing models are now serious scarce,” he told Porsche Parade. I have things like early sandcast aluminium 911 Turbo 911 crankcases that are not virtually unobtainable today.” Located in Mordialloc, aPorschaPart has a 15,000 sq. ft stockholding that O’Keefe says encompasses the largest range of predominantly used parts in the Southern Hemisphere for both air and water-cooled Porsches, plus a substantial stock of NOS, new and reconditioned parts to suit the expanding global market. The IP and equipment of the fully-operating and Internationally-recognised business, including its substantial plant, full workshop equipment. Its yard and workshop forklifts and delivery vehicle are also part of the sale, as is assistance to the purchaser from O’Keefe. Included in the IP are Porsche and online parts systems, parts and customer databases and a MYOB operating system, A generous property lease agreement and an on-going business plan are also part of the sale, as is transition assistance from the current owner. O’Keefe joined the PCV after being goaded by his younger brother and f356 enthusiast Greg. He resisted until 1979 because he knew that once he did, Porsches ownership would become addictive! He is best-known in PCV circles for his commitment to PCV competition activities that saw him win the Tony Jones Memorial Award for the ‘Most Consistent Competitor in all Events’ on the Club’s calendar in 1983.

944 Challenge racing series for front-engined 944 models that is still going strong today. He also forged a close friendship with late PCV member Don Tryhorm, with the pair competing regularly in the Mt.Buller Sprint in Tryhorn’s distinctive 1992 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.6 – a car now owned by O’Keefe, who is currently restoring it to its original Signal Green with yellow wheels glory as a tribute to Tryhorn. He established aPorschaPart after being concerned that original parts for earlier Porsches models were drying up around the world, purchasing the stock of international parts collectors to enhance his inventory. A particularly attractive feature of the purchase of his business for International investors is the potential it offers to fast-track Australian Citizenship, as those who own and manage a business in Australia may be allowed to stay in Australia indefinitely. O’Keefe say the potential for future sales has a split focus divided between local and export sales, with the former presently more than covering all overheads and operating costs. While local sales will predominantly draw on locally-sourced later model stock, he believes much of the business’s future growth and potential lies in the businesses early air-cooled, 911, 964 and 993 stock on hand, which he says will benefit from further exposure by simple Internet marketing to the growing global market. Genuine Fuchs forged wheels and engine casings, for example, are always sought after by restorers. “I can see the day coming where many of these original parts simply won’t be available,” he says. Boxster, Cayman and Cayenne parts are also increasingly in demand as these popular models cover much higher distances annually than is traditional for older model Porsches. An important fact here is that there are no Australian Government taxes on export sales. PCV Life Member Michael Browning is assisting O’Keefe with the sale. Expressions of interest should be directed in commercial confidence to him at michael@browning.com.au

He was prominent competitor at the wheel of his white 1974 911 Targa – IZK-911 which he referred to as his ‘thrash machine’ – in all PCV events, from motorkhanas to sprint and even economy runs, frequently lending the car to other members who found themselves car-less for points-scoring championship events. This generosity worked against him in 1984 when he was narrowly beaten to the Club Championship by Ric Halgren, who scored some of his points driving O’Keefe’s Porsche! He sold the car with its retro-fitted 3.0 litre engine some years ago to a Home and Away actor who lived in the Dandenong Ranges and now has another favourite ‘thrash’ Porsche – a 2.9-litre Cayman with a PDK transmission. The sale didn’t lessen his love of Porsche competition and in 1999 he started the Porsche ISSUE 1, 2022

PCV Club Night Fox Classic Car Museum

for the next few months. Mark then asked Social Director – Linley Baxter to invite all New Members present to come forward and introduce themselves to the gathering. As only 200 people were permitted into the museum at a time, we loosely split into two groups with the first group of around 170 members enjoying a tour of the museum, while the others commenced with their dinner which consisted of a Gourmet Carvery Banquet, (ably provided once again by Adam Pope and his team from Fabulous Catering)

Well we all thought that this Club Night would be a “Big One” particularly after not being able to host a club night (due to Covid) since our last night at Seaworks in Williamstown way back in April ’21. Fox Museum had a cap on visitors within the building of 200 people so we had to limit our night to 400 attendees, allowing for a block of 200 members through the museum at a time, however little did we know that within three days of bookings opening we would be sitting on some 422 registrations. Our last visit to the Fox Museum was back in February 2008, and during that time significant work has been performed on this heritage listed precinct, along with owner of the collection Mr Lindsay Fox AC using this time to add further exhibits to his collection. The club had extended an invitation to Mr fox to join us and to open

the night, however he had a fall the week prior to our event which saw him hospitalised for a couple of days and then sent home to rest. Unfortunately due to various reasons we had over 80 attendees cancel their club night registrations with only a couple of days to go, which ultimately saw around 350 attendees on the night, and with on-site parking at a premium, Social Committee Member Geoff Mould and his team of helpers, were able to accommodate pretty much all of those who came by car. Our night kicked off at 7.30 sharp with MC Russell Sturzaker taking to the microphone to welcome members, while also introducing our Special Guest - Daniel Schmollinger - CEO of Porsche Cars Australia and Porsche Retail Group Australia (and fellow PCV Club Member) along with his wife Constanze. Also present on the night (and fellow PCV Club Members also) were Robert Gattereder - CEO of Preston Motors Group (owners of Porsche Centre Brighton and Doncaster) and his wife Jutta. Russell then welcomed Club President – Mark Horton Andrews to the microphone, where Mark welcomed members to our first club night for 2022, and also discussed some of the upcoming events that are planned

Coupled with this on the drinks side there were a variety of beers, sparkling wine, chardonnay and Shiraz, along with orange juice, soft drinks and mineral waters …

The vehicles displayed are constantly changing, with cars being rotated on a regular basis so that maintenance, cleaning and testing can be done without too much interruption to the display. However good these cars on the ground floor display may have been paled into insignificance to most “Porshafiles” present on the night, when they visited the first floor of the building and came across, what was truly the highlight of the evening, this being the most recent acquisition by Lindsay of the Private “Sapphire Blue” Porsche Collection of Gregor Piech.(great grandson of Ferdinand Porsche).A fabulous night was had by all those who attended, and if the results of our Member Survey following the event is anything to go by, every facet of our evening was a true success.

At some stage during the evening everyone had the pleasure of being able to partake in a tour of the Fox Classic Car Collection, and none were disappointed. Housed in the historic Queen’s Warehouse and consisting of two whole floors, the collection contains dozens of the world’s most rare and prestigious vehicles. These cars have been collected over a 50-year period by Lindsay, and donated to a Trust to raise funds for charity and for the public to enjoy.

Lindsay has a passion for classic vehicles, with his collection including models from Mercedes Benz, Jaguar, Porsche, Ferrari, Bentley, Volkswagen, Ford, Rolls Royce, MG, Lexus and Nissan between 1923 and 2020. The collection

I must take this opportunity also, to thank all those committee members who assisted in making our night such a great event, from Geoff Mould and his helpers in the car park, to Carly (and her daughter - Delani), Vicki Sturzaker, Paul Sbrissa, Stephen Lofthouse and Werner Engel on the registration desk. Anna Cook for assisting with organising the catering, and many others who assisted on the night. Lindsay Fox acquires Gregor Piech’s Private “Sapphire Blue” Porsche Collection

So to explain the background of this collection we’ll throw to Andy Enright – Editor of Motor Magazine who put together the following article in August 2021 with Photos by Cam Inniss Photography You may not know Gregor Piech. Born in 1994, he’s the youngest of Ferdinand Piech’s eight children. Yes, the late Ferdinand Piech who used to run Volkswagen. Gregor’s great grandfather was Ferdinand Porsche so he’s a Porsche blue-blood. Blue is a bit of a theme within Porsche. Ferdinand Piech’s 1967 development version of the 911 R was finished in Scarab Blue and he professed that blue was his favourite colour for cars. For Gregor’s 19th birthday, his father bought him a Breitling Le Mans anniversary edition wristwatch, with a silver-blue dial and a blue leather strap. The next birthday gift was even more special. Realising that it was 50 years since Ferdinand Piech had worked on the original 911 R, Gregor’s mother Ursula decided that her son’s Skoda Citigo wasn’t really up to snuff and bought him a Porsche 911 R. That’s right, the 991 version that is worth more than the GDP of some African nations. Gregor’s specification for this car was exacting. Finished in metallic Sapphire Blue, the car was decorated with British Racing Green stripe details, a subtle hat tip to Ferdinand’s acquisition of Bentley for the Volkswagen Group. The interior was finished in a special Black Watch Tartan, framed with royal blue leather and Noto green accents, continued across the dash and door panels. Finally, Gregor insisted that because this was a truly special vehicle, it would have ‘One of One’ illuminated sill finishers to greet when you opened the door. There’s no doubt the car is utterly beautiful. 44

PORSCHE PARADE

Young Gregor must have been beguiled by the effect because he then did something slightly berserk, but in a good way. He decided he wanted every one of the most desirable versions of the 991-generation 911 finished in exactly this specification. So, aside from the 2017 911 R that got the whole thing started, Gregor also took delivery of a 2018 911 GT3 Touring, a 2018 911 GT3 RS, a 2018 911 GT2 RS, a 2018 911 Targa 4 GTS, a 2019 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series, a 2019 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series Cabriolet and a 2020 911 Speedster. This would have made one heck of a garage, if a little lacking in bandwidth. To rectify that, Gregor added a couple more Sapphire Blue beauties. First up was a 2020 935 Flat nose. These are rare at the best of times, with only 77 being built. Four have come to Australia, with three of them housed at Fox. The naked carbon car is quite something, but the highlight is the Sapphire Blue one-of-one. That was followed by a 918 Spyder hypercar. Despite wearing issue number 135 of 918 vehicles, the Spyder was the last vehicle to be delivered, leaving the factory in 2020. We’re still not quite sure how this happened, but if you’re a Porsche/Piech, it’s reasonable to assume you can pull some strings. This car features Sapphire Blue laser cut rims spokes with matching blue brake calliper.

All of these cars now live in Melbourne. Lindsay Fox has acquired the collection, lock, stock and barrel from the Porsche family and they’re the highlight of the newly-renovated Fox Classic Car Collection in Docklands.4 We’re not sure if Gregor had been naughty and had the cars taken away from him or whether he now wants to rebuild the collection with 992 generation models, but his loss is your gain. Having been closed since 2019 due to plans for adjacent site works, the Fox Classic Car Collection is now open again, and the entire upper floor is devoted to Porsche, with pride of place going to the Sapphire Blue collection. 10 AUG 2021 Andy ENRIGHT - EDITOR MOTOR MOTOR’s editor brings over 20 years of experience to the hot seat. Originally based in Europe, Enright has notched up over 1000 laps of the Nordschleife without bending anything and has an enviable contact book. Remains utterly befuddled by fine dining options. Well on arrival it was not what most competitors wanted, Cold, Raining & Windy. The exact opposite of what we encountered on our last visit here in 2019, which was very hot and in the mid 30’s. But NO where near as bad as 2016.

Because most of us started this way, which is one of the great innovations of our club.

Those that did not book a Garage, scampered to find shelter, The Scrutineering Shed became “Coxy’s Shed” as Phil very quickly staked a claim, with a number of others following suit, myself included.

Cayenne/Macan Register SUV Run to Yering Meadows Golf Club – A Long Time Between Drinks Story & Photos: Reza Mohammed Sunday 13 March 2022

“I have been involved and attended many PCV events in my time as a member. I cannot recall a better, well-run and brilliant event as the SUV Run. The little things: the Google map links for the route, the briefing, the route, the lunch venue, the fact that the owners of the event welcomed us, the car parking, it just goes on and on. And then when my wife said, “oh that was so much fun – when’s the next one?”, you know you have a winner. Congratulations to all!” The VIP experience began with reserved parking for the eight Cayennes, three Macans, and two 911s.

– Post-run survey feedback from an attendee After ~1hr 20mins of driving through stunning countryside, the group converged on Kinglake for a coffee break, in preparation for the next leg.

After six long years, the SUV Register assembled with 12 cars, 20 adults, 2 kids, and a dog (surely a first for a PCV run!) in great anticipation for the drive ahead.

The towering gum trees and tight corners up to Glenburn, and then down through Myers Creek Road thrilled drivers as our Porsches roared to life.

After 145 exhilarating kilometres, the convoy entered Yering Meadows Golf Club. Post-briefing, suburbia gave way to the long, sweeping curves of Arthur’s Creek, the breathtaking horizon views of Yan Yean, and the verdant rolling hills of Humevale.

A private dining room with a stunning view and a sumptuous two-course meal awaited the group after the long drive.

“It’s always great to meet our Porsche Club members! It’s not only impressive to hear their stories on success in life and how they found their love for Porsche, but it’s also good to catching up with our ‘brand ambassadors’ and listening to their feedback where we as a brand can further develop. A close collaboration between our Porsche Clubs and us is very important to me: it’s all about Porsche Family, and this is what we want to foster further.” – Daniel Schmollinger, CEO of Porsche Cars Australia, and new PCV member

Porsche Centre Brighton kindly sponsored Porschebranded yo-yos for all attendees, as well as door prizes of model SUVs. The proprietor of the golf club sponsored 18-hole golfing vouchers ($55 value) for all attendees!

Richard Catchlove snagged the third Door Prize.

In true Porsche spirit, David Rosenwax donated his Door Prize to Sacha Caller’s ecstatic son, making their first run even more special!

Richard Catchlove demonstrating his yo-yoing skills.

All smiles with the Porsche Club Victoria family!

Jake Parsons, Sales Executive at Porsche Centre Brighton (and PCV SUV Register Captain) presenting the first Door Prize to new PCV member, Constanze Schmollinger.

The VIP experience continued with a photoshoot on the green and a magnificent backdrop. Glorious weather, a fun group of attendees, a stunning lunch venue, and VIP treatment made for a memorable day, and high anticipation for the next run in six months (definitely not six years!).

The second Door Prize was won by new PCV member, Valerie Ogorodnyk.

Thanks to the amazing team of organisers: (L-R) Paul Sbrissa, Jake Parsons, Reza Mohammed (on his first run as SUV Captain!) and Carly & Lisa back at HQ!

GT3/RS/RSR Register Run to Panton Hill

Story: Greg Humphries

Photos: Greg Humphries & Linley Baxter

Sunday 13th March 2022

After a much too lengthy hiatus, the GT3 Register Captain finally organised the first event for 2022, a lunch run to Martha’s Restaurant at Martha’s Cove in Safety Beach. Respecting social distancing, we loosely grouped in the glorious morning sunshine at the McDonalds Keysborough meeting point, with those hungry or needing a caffeine hit popping inside for a top-up. On a day when PCV were holding three separate register events, nineteen participants signed up for the run, bringing along the most spectacular array of GT3s I can remember for our humble Register. The list included 996.1 (2), 997.1RS (1), 997.2 (1), 991.1RS (2), 991.2RS (1) and 991.2 (2). In a strange quirk the only ‘outsider’ (a delightful 993 4S) is owned by a couple who in my memory haven’t missed a GT3 Register event in a very, very long time! We were also pleased to welcome first time PCV driving event attendees Harry & Carmel Kokkinos in their Lizard Green 991 GT3RS. This line-up of Porsche’s finest was so impressive, participants took this early opportunity to meet the cars, and yes, fellow drivers and navigators! They took this opportunity so well, that after an on-time briefing, we were more than a few minutes late getting away. Although it was a long weekend, the traffic was pleasantly light on the first leg out of the suburbs, up through Gembrook, across the open plains down to Tooradin. Thanks to Craig for being extremely creative in identifying a fantastic parking and photography location at

this stop as other parking opportunities were extremely limited… As the morning went on, and the drive took us down the picturesque coastline to Flinders, Cape Schanck and Rosebud before turning northwards towards Safety Beach. Predictably, tourist numbers on the roads steadily built. In case some of this sounds all too wonderful, the run organiser threw in just enough curve balls via the run notes and turn-by-turn distances to keep the field on their toes! On arrival at Martha’s we were settled into our balcony tables overlooking the marina in the sunshine. Once the pre-lunch drinks started to flow (after some initial ordering confusion), the conversations re-commenced and serious socialising followed. Martha’s offered a modern three option entrée / main plus sides group menu with various seafood, pork, pasta and vegetarian dishes. I thought the food was extremely tasty letting the freshness and flavours of the ingredients to shine through. The food seemed well received from what I deduced from the empty plates returning to the kitchen! By mid afternoon with the sun still beaming down, it was time to make the move back home. Thank you to Craig & Bronwyn, Adam & Nicole, Ken & Lisa, Anthony & Tam, Colin & Margot, Ken & Barbera, Dileep & Samhita, Harry & Carmel and Linley & Helen for joining the day and contributing to make it a wonderful way kick off our 2022 register program.

Modern 911 Register Run to Panton Hill Story: Rita De Lucia Photos: Ken Anson Sunday 23rd January 2022

Melbourne put on the weather for a perfect day to drive our beautiful cars to Panton Hill. Around 30 or so cars met at Melissa Cakes in Templestowe, quite a few arriving earlier than the suggested time so we could catch up with friends we hadn’t seen for a while, and to make new ones too. We checked in, Kon gave us the rundown, set our Tacos to zero and proceeded to make our way on our “Porsche Parade” up Parker Street for the start of our run. I love how no one really wants to take off first but someone has to do it! The sun was shining, the navigation notes were easy to follow, and once we got a few km under our belts the mountain fresh air was unmissable. The scenery was spectacular, I particularly enjoy looking in the passenger side mirror (as the passenger of course) to see the convoy of beautiful cars behind us. It really leaves you speechless to see such beauty all together. We had driven around three quarters into the first half of our run until we noticed everyone slowing and breaking.... road works we thought... Worse, HORROR !!! THE DIRT ROAD ...... “It’s only about a kilometre,” says Kon, as he approaches each and every driver. “Go slow and keep your distance.” I’m pretty sure that the words “stone chips” were uttered in each car, definitely was in ours and from the shine on the cars at our original meeting point most had been in the driveway on 56

PORSCHE PARADE

Saturday being washed and prepared for today. It was forgotten quickly and we kept driving until we reached Kinglake for more caffeine and some morning tea. Caffeinated and legs stretched we once again set our tac’s to zero for the second half of our run. More great Porsche friendly roads led us to Panton Hill Pub for Lunch. Great food, great company, great cars, and a great club to be part of. Thankyou Kon for organising a Porsche Perfect day.

Boxster/Cayman Register Run to Brandy Creek

Story: Brad Clark, The Fitzy Boxster Photos: Carlo Fasolino Sunday 27th February 2022

Early on the morning of 27 February, the black clouds and forecast threatened to dampen the prospects for the run to Brandy Creek. As the writer headed out of Melbourne towards Gippsland, hope shone through the clouds and glints of blue sky were visible in the far east. From 8.30am, some of the best examples of Boxsters and Caymans of all generations began to pull into the carpark of the McDonald’s at Officer along with several generations of 911. As a ‘new’ member (thank you Covid for delaying our first social event) I wasn’t sure what to expect. My excitement grew as more cars arrived and members began to mingle and introduce themselves. Locals too began to gather, one asking where we (and he) were going. Soon enough Carlo was briefing the crowd and seconding members (me) for club duties. At approximately 9.30am it began. The revving of the refined six cylinder and turbo charged four cylinder cars began; a spectacle for certain. As the group headed further to the East, the sky became bright and blue and the dark western sky disappeared behind us; the temperature was already 26oC. We turned toward Westernport at Pakenham and travelled out through Nar Nar Goon, Tynong and Garfield. For me it was my childhood home so watching locals stand in awe of the parade, crackling and popping, while down shifting from the 100km/h zone into the 60km/h zone, added a special level of excitement. For the most part the roads were clear of farmers and cattle and the group enjoyed quick, dry conditions taking the cars through their paces. We passed the Highway Patrol in Lang Lang as we headed toward, Nyora, home of Nyora Raceway. From Nyora, we continued to Loch for a coffee and comfort stop. The sun was still shining now more brightly and it was the type of weather cabriolets were built for.

At 11.15am, the group saddled up and blasted up the hill out of Loch towards Korumburra. Clouds began to appear in the sky and as the group reached Bena-Kongwak Rd and descended into the valley, it appeared the rains were coming. With the cars revving high into the corners and quickly peaking on the short straights, we put kilometres of pavement behind us and Korumburra disappeared in the rear-view mirror. Choosing the quickest lines through the corners, we outpaced the weather and again enjoyed the brilliant clear sky Gippsland is famous for. We now were immersed in a 30km stretch of the -Korumburra – Warragul Rd (C425), steep, second gear hills with quick corners where the cars could be put through their paces without breaching any rules. This route is recommended for anyone who enjoys an undulating and winding route. By now I was working up an appetite. At 12.30 the group pulled into the carpark at the picturesque Brandy Creek Estate and ventured into the function room. The room was buzzing with excitement and conversation as old friends reacquainted after the recent period of separation and new friendships began. The views were spectacular with a sweeping veranda overlooking the Yarra Ranges National park on one side and the Strzelecki Ranges on the other. Tapas was on the menu and it was about time. It began with garlic bread and cured ham and continued with tomato salsa, meatballs, rocket salad, king prawns and roast potatoes. Somehow I managed to cobble together a chip sandwich finishing off my experience of travelling back to where I grew up. New members, Brad (me) and Beck Clark and Peter and Vickey Berg were welcomed and drew the raffle for some of the Brandy Creek wines. Gradually the numbers thinned out and Beck and I drove away at 3.15pm. The weather held out, the drive was exciting and at times challenging, and the company and fellowship of members rewarding. Modern 911 Register Run to Gisborne Golf Club Story: Darren Bonney Photos: Ken Anson & Kon Gogos Sunday 13th March 2022

A great drive day in beautiful sunny autumn weather! The modern 911 run to Gisborne Golf Course started meeting near the Tullamarine airport on Link Drive at the new BP service station which provided us an ideal place to park all 30+ cars in a row and enable a great photo shot. And providing ample modern facilities to grab a coffee, snacks and catch up with all other participants on the day. We were all able to take off from the main intersection at the BP, using a double right turning lane towards the Tullamarine airport which grouped the cars in a beautiful Porsche parade upon take off! Ahead of us were the very Porsche friendly regional roads circumnavigating the beautiful Macedon ranges with many awesome and unfamiliar back roads that our captain Kon Gogos (event organiser) proudly chooses with every drive he organises. Plenty of rolling hills, visual passenger friendly views, wide back roads and plenty of bends and straights to delight all types of drivers. Leg 1, taking us to Lancefield for our first drive break. We headed north out of Melbourne past the Tullamarine airport with only the traffic lights slowing us down in front of what is currently an eerily quiet international airport. With the airport behind us, we blew off any cobwebs onto the highway towards Sunbury and within minutes we were now on the fast paced backroads that took us snaking our way across to Clarkefield then back through the middle of Darraweit Guim to Kilmore, waking the town with a procession of beautiful cars as we continued north to Pyalong before cutting across to Lancefield for our first stop. 60

PORSCHE PARADE

Break time, The quiet Lancefield town about 70kms out of Melbourne welcomed the drivers and cars with plenty of options for facilities, food, coffee and easy main street parking for all participants. After drivers found their finest choices we were soon congregating on the café bakery stretch providing all participants to talk Porsche while looking at the array of our main street idle masterpieces providing the sleepy town with a great stretch of colours and engineering artistry during our driving recess. Leg 2, took us further north looping around the old Cobb and Co regional roads to Pyalong and Tooborac back to Lancefield town centre for a drive through on our way across to the northern side of Mt Macedon. This provided any early leavers easy access to the Calder Freeway to head home whilst most remained on the back road to bring us along the winding roads and over the top of Mt Macedon towards Gisborne. Lunch, was at Gisborne Golf club with plenty of bitumen parking available to line up the team of Porsches again. Lunch was a reserved set of tables providing a view of the golf course. To summarise, great weather, 30+ car solid attendance on a long weekend, excellent parking available at every stop, fast paced and fun winding roads with little traffic and facilities and food options were plentiful! An excellent Porsche drive region around the Northern and North Eastern roads all of which is not far outside of Melbourne!
