“Porsche Parade” is the official magazine of The Porsche Club of Victoria Inc. (ACN 005 727 0942)

Welcome to the 4th issue of Porsche Parade for 2021. My apologies for the delay in the production of this issue. As covid has once again had a massive impact on the events calendar I thought it best to wait and put the late events that were squeezed into late December into the magazine. That combined with the huge delays in freight meant that there was no way our members would receive the magazine before Christmas as usual. I wish I could promise the next magazine will be on time, but as I write this article there are 38,000 cases in Victoria today, so who knows what the future holds. On a positive note, holding the magazine back has meant that we have all the 2021 events in this issue. There have been many Register Events as well as Social events including the Winter Run, the Brighton Monte and the combined Social / Competition Sandown Experience which was a huge success.

It maybe slightly down on power from the 911, but it more than makes up for it with its mid engine design and superior on the limit handling.

And with the electric age coming very soon this could be one of the last naturally aspirated pure sports cars of all time making it very collectable.

It maybe a little firm for road driving but if you can afford the price tag for an occasional track blast, go for it!

As usual, a big thanks to everyone who contributed to this issue.

Contributions, with quality photographs, are invited. Digital photographs should be 300 dpi jpeg or tiff files. They should be sent to editor@pcv.com.au.

The Cover of the magazine features a car many of us have been anticipating for more than a decade. We have wondered what a Cayman would be like with a GT3 motor in it, and finally the GT4 RS has arrived.

As a GT4 owner myself I am very excited to see this car which can now rival the flagship 911.

president’s message

2021/22 Mark Horton Andrews President president@pcv.com.au

Melanie Treloar Vice President vp@pcv.com.au

Greetings Porsche Club members, this is my first President’s Report since the AGM in October, and I take this opportunity to thank you for electing me as President of your Club. I congratulate our newly elected and reelected Officers and General Committee members. I look forward to working with our Vice President, Melanie Treloar, and all Committee members in the years ahead. On behalf of the incoming Committee, I once again thank our administrative team, Carly and Lisa, for the tremendous support they provide our members and our Club. I also welcome the opportunity to thank our outgoing President, Tony Carolan. Tony has made a very large contribution to the Club in several roles over many years. Tony has been able to give so much of his time and effort to the Club with the support of Chris. I thank Chris for her own ongoing contribution to and support of the Club. Tony’s support network extends to his daughters Sarah and Anne and son-in-law Chris, all of whom played a role at one time or another – such as bringing drinks in at the end of President’s Day. Tony stands large in the history of the Club. He was Competition Director for some five years, one of the longer-serving Vice Presidents of the Club, and a three-year President. His term was extended when Covid squashed activities in 2020, and he was instrumental in guiding the Club through the storm. Throughout his time in these roles, Tony has been a steady and considered leader. As Vice President, I appreciated Tony’s wise counsel and his absolute commitment to running the Club in the interests of members with a practical and commercial approach. Some decisions have been hard, but Tony never flinched. This is a model I will seek to emulate. Pleasingly, Tony will continue to be involved in the activities of the General Committee.

Apart from acknowledging our administrative team, I also thank our Andrew Smith (Competition Director) rocky as his first year has been, and each member of the Competition Committee and Marshals crew; Linley Baxter (Social Director) and each member of the Social Committee; Paul Sbrissa (Registers Director) and all our Register Captains. During the year, Clyde White acted as Social Director for a spell, and I thank Clyde for acting when needed. I take comfort that we have people in the Club who are prepared to step up when required. In each of Social, Competition, Registers and Club Nights we have an ambitious program for the new year. We are all very hopeful that lives can return to something more like normal and that we can enjoy our passions.

Linley Baxter

Andrew Smith Competition Director motorsport@pcv.com.au

During the year the Club has acknowledged and appreciated the support of Porsche Cars Australia and each of the Porsche Centres Melbourne, Brighton, and Doncaster. We look forward to continuing to work with them in 2022. I wish you and your families the very best for the holiday season. Please take care and join me in looking forward to the New Year! Club Permit Scheme

Our Club is powered by volunteers and the Club thanks all of you for your contribution. It has been a challenging time for volunteers as in some cases events were rescheduled several times. However, as government restrictions lifted Club activities came back in overdrive. I was lucky enough to take part in Club activities on every weekend during November. This is a credit to the passion and professionalism of our volunteers.

from pit lane To summarise the 2021 track year in one word, difficult or frustrating would be the words that come to mind. With only 5 competition events able to be completed this year, it has been a cold and lonely winter (and Spring for that matter) since our beloved marques have been collectively on the black stuff in any form of anger! Fortunately with restrictions easing recently, we have been able to hold a very strongly supported and successful finale to the 2021 season, with the first and hopefully last Covid Cup being completed at Sandown on November 28. Please see a full report further on in this edition. This event became a significant joint occasion, with the integration of the Social Committee providing an event for all members, the “Sandown Experience”. Again this was a huge success and provided the opportunity for the social set and the track addicts to combine and mingle and experience a different side of what the club provides. A detailed report is presented further on.

Well done to Russell Sturzaker and Linley Baxter for pulling this together on a relatively short notice. We are already planning another similar event at Winton Raceway Benalla in mid 2022. I’d also like to congratulate all of the Competition award winners this year, details and photos are shown in this edition. With the 2022 Competition calendar almost fully locked in for next year, we are looking to make up for lost time with 10 events plus our time honoured Presidents Day that unfortunately had to be postponed this year. Please see the below calendar. Phillip Island Sun 13/2 Haunted Hills Sun 6/3 Sandown 6 Hour Sun 3/4 Broadford Sun 22/5 Winton Sat & Sun 4&5/6 Long Track Saturday/ Skid Pan Motokhana Sunday Sandown Sun 10/7 Winton Sun 14/8 Long Track morning/Short Track afternoon Phillip Island Sat 17/9 Sandown Sun 16/10 Unconfirmed at this stage Sandown Presidents Day Sun 20/11 Unconfirmed at this stage

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Competition Committee for their help, support and direction during my first year as Competition Director and wow what a baptism of fire it’s been. Without their assistance and guidance, this year could have been far more difficult for me than it ended up being. Special mention must go to Carly in the admin office for her tireless work behind the scenes. We are blessed to have such a strong and enthusiastic club that always has the best interests of its members at heart. Let’s all put 2021 behind us and have a safe and happy Christmas and New Year and I look forward to seeing everyone “From Pit Lane” in 2022.

the socialist We were very honoured to have Daniel Schmollinger CEO of Porsche Cars Australia attend the Sandown Experience. He summed up the magic of PCV when he told Russell Sturzaker that “we were animating the brand on his behalf” More about that later. Did you know that the main reason people are joining our club is “their interest in the Porsche Marque” followed closely by “sharing an interest with like minded people”. I didn’t but now we know this from our recent member survey. You will see a lot more about the survey in this issue together with the announcement of the two lucky winners of the $150 Visa card participation prize. A great big thanks to Anna Cook for persisting with the idea of the survey and bringing it to fruition. As surveys go our survey threw up some very valid data because the 35% response rate was very high when on average the response rate to surveys tend to be between 5% and 15%. A big thank you to all members who participated to help us understand what you want from PCV events. We will use this data to help frame future events. For instance there is the temptation to just service the 81% of members aged over 50. Giiven the responses we already do that pretty well albeit with plenty of room to use survey findings to improve the offering. And we will continue to improve the quality and number of events for that

group. It is the 19% aged under 50 that provide a level of fascination. Arguably they are the future generations of the club. With busy family /career oriented lifestyles they are time poor. They have pre school, pre teen and secondary school children and probably drive SUV’s (Macan, Cayenne?).It is this group that we can also look after. We now know they tend to prefer family events such as family days and less time intensive events such as Cars and Coffee. We also know that older members love car displays so why not combine car displays with attractions for families and children? A guideline for such events in 2022? Maybe. Regardless an example of how we are using the data from the survey. So the survey has been run and won. And so have some of the many events we proposed for November and December to celebrate the return of our freedoms. Starting off with the brilliant Run to Hurstbridge. Kon Gogos pulled off another corker, which was not even dampened by persistent mist and some heavy fog. Soon after we had the Brighton Monte. Clyde White conceived of a unique first time event combining three runs culminating at Porsche Brighton with a beautiful outdoor lunch in their spacious undercover area.We called it the Brighton Monte to celebrate Porsches win in 1968 Monte Carlo Rally which, in those days, commenced from multiple points in Europe. A great big thank you to the 3 run organisers Stephen Lofthouse, Geoff Mould and Kon Gogos and special thanks to Pike Peters (Marketing Partner) and his team

at Porsche Brighton. We have now just come off the high of the Sandown Experience where organiser Russell Sturzaker pulled of some more “firsts”. The first time all three Porsche Dealers had displayed together at a PCV event and the first time in a long time that the Social and Competition parts of PCV had joined for one big happy event. Thanks to Comp Director Andrew Smith for embracing us as part of a Competition event. It was a huge pleasure to repose in the marque with a sumptuous lunch whilst reflecting on your laps around the Sandown race circuit.A big thank you to Russell and all the volunteers who helped run the day. And a big shout out to Porsche Melbourne, Porsche Brighton and Porsche Doncaster for the car display and also thank you to Porsche Cars Australia who provided very significant sponsorship for the day. Before we launch into 2022 we have two more events to go. Kon Gogos is organising a Porsche and Coffee Run in Mid December and Vickie Morris is leading a Mid Week Run. To find out more about this and our plethora of events coming to you in 2022 please check out the Events page on the website and keep your eyes out for the PCV email update. Here’s to lots of Porsche Socialising. Linley Baxter Social Director

PORSCHE PARADE

When 500 PS (368 kW) from a high-revving mid-mounted engine meets a purist 1,415 kg kerb weight, it is time for the term ‘driving pleasure‘ to be redefined: the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS is the new flagship model in the 718 family – an uncompromising driver’s car designed to impress with its lightweight construction, extremely agile chassis set-up, sophisticated aerodynamics and unique soundtrack. Whether it is being driven on narrow, winding mountains roads or closed race tracks, the 718 Cayman GT4 RS is king of the compact mid-engined range. On the Nürburgring Nordschleife, it outperforms its sibling, the 718 Cayman GT4, by more than 23 seconds. The naturally aspirated flat-six engine, familiar from the 911 GT3 Cup racing car and the 911 GT3 series production model, forms the centrepiece of a sports car that has been designed for maximum driving pleasure. The engine revs as high as 9,000 rpm. Compared to the 718 Cayman GT4, the 718 Cayman GT4 RS has an extra 80 PS (59 kW), resulting in a weight-to-power ratio of 2.83 kg/ PS. Maximum torque has been increased from 430 to 450 Nm. Among the striking features of the new, top-of-the-range 718 are the process air intakes behind the driver and passenger windows. The 718 Cayman normally has small side windows here. The new air intakes improve both the intake airflow and, at the same time, create a thrilling intake noise right next to the occupants’ ears. The characteristic air intakes in front of the rear wheels have been retained and are used for engine cooling.

The sports low-ratio PDK underpins the incredible acceleration of this midengined sports car. The 718 Cayman GT4 RS sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds (GT4 with PDK: 3.9 seconds) and has a top speed of 315 km/h (GT4 with PDK: 302 km/h), which it reaches in seventh gear. In typical RS style, lightweight construction is a defining element of the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS design. The two-seater weighs only 1,415 kilograms, with a full fuel tank and without a driver as defined by the DIN standard, which is 35 kg less than a PDK-equipped 718 GT4. This weight reduction is achieved thanks to the use of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) for components such as the bonnet and front wings. Lightweight carpets also save weight, as does reducing the amount of insulation material. The rear window is made of lightweight glass. Lightweight door panels with textile opening loops and nets on the storage compartments complete the quest to eliminate every superfluous gram. The new fixed rear wing, its swan-neck attachment and aluminium wing supports, are a distinctive element of the exterior design. This highly efficient wing principle is derived from the Porsche 911 RSR GT racing car and was first adopted in a Porsche series production

Like every modern RS model, the new 718 GT4 RS is exclusively available with the Porsche dual clutch transmission (PDK). This gearbox shifts through its seven gears at lightning speed and guarantees maximum performance. The gearshift paddles allow drivers to keep their hands on the steering wheel even when changing gear manually. Alternatively, they can use the re-designed selector lever on the centre console.

car with the 911 GT3. In combination with the 30-millimetre-lower ride height compared to the 718 Cayman, the eye-catching vents on the front wheel arches, the aerodynamically optimised underbody panelling with connected rear diffuser, the multi-adjustable front diffuser and the new front spoiler lip with flow-around side blades, in the Performance mode reserved for use on race tracks the GT4 RS generates approximately 25 per cent more downforce than the GT4. Modifications to the chassis also contribute to its greater performance. Ball joints bind the chassis tightly to the body to deliver even more precise and direct handling. The adjustable, circuit-ready chassis has an RS-specific shock absorber setup, as well as modified spring and anti-roll bar rates. The optional Weissach package takes the dynamic design of the GT4 RS even further. The front luggage-compartment lid, process air intakes, cooling air intakes, airbox cover, exterior mirror upper trims and rear wing have a carbon-weave finish. The titanium tailpipes look similar to the exhaust system on the Porsche 935. The fitted roll cage at the rear is also made of titanium. The upper section of the dashboard is upholstered in Race-Tex material and a large Porsche logo is integrated into the rear window. With the Weissach package 20-inch forged magnesium wheels can be ordered at additional cost instead of the 20-inch forged aluminium wheels. All of these enhancements compared to the 718 Cayman GT4 make the GT4 RS the most uncompromising and sharpest member of the 718 family. This is particularly evident on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. During the final phase of set-up adjustments, Porsche brand ambassador Jörg Bergmeister lapped the 20.832-kilometre track in 7:09.300 minutes. The GT4 RS conquered the shorter 20.6 km version, which previously served as the benchmark, in 7:04.511 minutes – 23.6 seconds faster than the 718 Cayman GT4.

The unique Porsche Design Chronograph 718 Cayman GT4 RS, 16

PORSCHE PARADE

created by Porsche Design exclusively for buyers of the vehicle, is as dynamic as its four-wheeled counterpart. The watch also benefits from a lightweight design concept with high-performance features based on the robust, high-tech characteristics of titanium. Its winding rotor is modelled on the sports car’s rims and can be specified in different colours, just like the car. The new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS is celebrating its world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show and can now be ordered at a base price of 141,338 euros (including 19 per cent VAT). Delivery begins in December. In addition, the GT4 RS is available with the optional Weissach package to further enhance its aerodynamics. The 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport racing version is also celebrating its premiere in Los Angeles, and it will be launched in several national and international racing series starting in 2022.

A Winter Social Run in Spring: GAJJET’s Day Out Sunday 7th November, 2021 Story: Gaj & Lesh Photos: Ken Anson & Kon Gogos

As a freshly minted Porsche owner and member of The Porsche Club of Victoria, this was my first opportunity to enjoy one of my passions with like-minded people. I pictured taking over the streets of Melbourne alongside other Porches, and having the opportunity to ogle without retribution! With my accomplice in the passenger seat, I approached our meeting point at Essendon Fields, and caught glimpses of other beauties; GAJJET, my Miami-blue Cayman 718, was where she belonged among the classic 77 Carreras, Boxster GTS and Ingrid’s orange Targa. I was like a kid in a candy store! Given Melbourne’s series of lockdowns, it had been a long-awaited winter social run (we were in spring!), and I could feel the hum of excitement in the air as we head to the meeting point, where our first task was to check in with Kon Gogos, our master of ceremonies for the day. He shook our hands in a warm welcome, and made us strike a few poses for the paparazzi (the Club’s professional camera person). But it was relieving to know that we were not the only new recruits 18

PORSCHE PARADE

out of a field of almost a hundred, who stood in a wide circle in the carpark, with Kon in the middle introducing us newbies and laying out the plans for the day – a two-hour drive to Hurstbridge, the route making almost the same shape as Port Philip Bay on Google Maps. Caught up in the excitement and always open to trying new things, I volunteered to write this article for the Club’s official magazine (it’s amazing what a bit of adrenaline and bravado will make you do). Then we were ready to roll. As we head out of the carpark towards Tullamarine Airport, I saw a swarm of Porsche headlights in the rear-view mirror and had to smile; this was what I was looking forward to. And while the day was a cloudy and coolish one, it felt like the sun was shining. I hadn’t paid much attention to the route details, so my accomplice and I decided to follow the Porsche parade. Well, that was a mistake! I thought we would tag behind a Targa but that thought didn’t last long: at the first set of lights it took off...and I had no chance of tailing it (the next time I saw that car was at lunch!).

Nor did it take long for the Boxster GTS behind us to step on it and overtake, which was the trigger for a few to follow suit. This is when I realised I was driving ‘Miss Daisy’. With my accomplice gripping the passenger door, I managed to settle into a rhythm and enjoy the wet tracks of Konagaderra Road as we headed towards Bolinda, enjoying the Victorian countryside, with green patches of land, and, occasionally, tall trees that flanked the road. After passing through Bolinda, we made a pit stop at Wallan to stretch our legs. Then we continued towards Kinglake, forming our own little group with Ben (another newbie) in his yellow 911 right behind us, our cars making the colour of a clear summer’s sky. As we snaked the windy roads and had to slow down at turnoffs and at occasional traffic jams, I would catch sight of the speedy 911s out the front before they took off again.

Soon we were high up and engulfed by fog. The visibility dropped to about 20m – an extra challenge while navigating single-laned bendy roads! So for the next 30 minutes, I took a more cautious approach, but also enjoyed the challenge and the eery scene, keeping well clear of any cyclist we came across (I was glad to be driving not riding up here today). The fog cleared as we descended out of Kinglake and headed towards Hurstbridge, which gave me the opening to test the bends – one of the most impressive aspects of my car. And this part of the route gave ample opportunity with numerous tight curves hugging cliff drops, but I relished accelerating on the small stretches in between. Lunch was waiting for us at the finish line at Bridges Restaurant. Its carpark was taken over by Porsches of all models and colours, but mostly, black, silver and white. And I think we only saw one Holden in the mix. (How did that get there?) We took some time to pause as the paparazzi clicked away, before entering the restaurant, where we were gifted a glass of champagne for this celebratory occasion. Angelo, a long-time club member and classic Porsche enthusiast invited us to join him at his table with his paisans – friendships he had formed through the Club – to enjoy the three-course meal in their lively company. The buzz of chatter mimicked the hum of Porsches and the one I was feeling inside. Which is to say, my accomplice and I were moved by the club’s warmth and hospitality on our first Social Run. And my only disappointment was that I didn’t get a chance to meet many of the other members or spend time checking out the cars more. But this left just me wanting to attend another run. So as Arnie says in The Terminator, ‘I’ll be back!’

ISSUE 3, 2021

25

Introduction by Linley Baxter The Brighton Monte came to life based on the Monte Carlo Rally which Porsche won the 1968 with Vic Elford and David Stone in the 2.0 911s. In those days and until 1991 they started from multiple points in Europe and rallied to the events confluence in Monte Carlo.

Committee Member and Modern 911 Register Captain Kon Gogos, and he elected to start our part of the Monte Run from BP Calder Park, adjacent to the Calder Racetrack.

over the Westgate Bridge into Port Melbourne where a group of snarling spitting Lambo’s passed us outbound, friendly victory waves being exchanged between some of the cars! Left onto Beaconsfield Parade, another quick left up North Rd and before we knew it, we were at Porsche Centre Brighton where Geoff and Barbara Mould quickly and effectively completed the QR Code and Vaccination Certificate Checks. The PCB function was excellent, there was a lot of catching up between the attendees, the atmosphere was vibrant, and the food was very good. Well done to the function organisers, I do know our expectations were at the very least, exceeded, and well done to Kon for organising his part of the Brighton Monte Run.

These Social Runs were born out of our desire to increase the opportunity for members to attend social runs and provide participants with one venue to congregate for lunch and socialise. Subsequently it was considered appropriate to also encourage members to attend the lunch only, if they were unable to participate in the runs. Our own “Monte” had three starting points around Melbourne to choose from all culminating at Porsche Centre Brighton at 12.30pm for a delightful alfresco lunch, drinks and socialising with our fellow members, whom we had not seen for a long while, and concluding at 3pm. Runs were organised from Yarrambat, Langwarrin and Calder culminating at Porsche Centre Brighton for lunch. This provided an opportunity for 150 members and guests to feast and regale their experience of the runs and catch-up with fellow members, since a series of Covid lockdowns and disappointments of runs being postponed. In opening this report we acknowledge the many people who coordinated their efforts into one seamless event. Kon Gogos, Stephen Lofthouse and Geoff Mould for the huge amount of work required to put the runs together and oversee them on the day. Thanks to Neville Sampson for his delightful pics. A great big thank you to Clyde White who conceived of the idea of multiple runs, coordinated the whole affair and organised the sumptuous lunch. And last but by no means least another big thank you to Pike Peters and the folk at Brighton Porsche for hosting us in their magnificent dealership. The Social Committee hopes to see you at one of our upcoming Social Runs in 2022.

So in fine warm weather on Sunday morning we saw twenty bright and shiny Porsches waiting patiently for Kon’s leg of the Monte Run to commence. All the cars presented very well, interesting cars included John Orchard’s blue ‘74 Targa, Russell and Vicki Sturzaker’s black ‘81 924 Carrera GT, Mark and Caroline Horton Andrews red ‘93 968 CS, David and Kathy Danziger’s black 2018 991.2 GT3, a couple of 930s and 996/997 Turbos, some 911SCs, and a couple of Boxsters and Caymans. All the cars looked great, all certainly a credit to their various owners (or caretakers in some cases). After a lot of greetings and “How good is it to be back doing Porsche stuff” our leader Kon marched us outside for his customary entertaining and informative briefing, and his introduction of new members. With briefing over, Andrew and Shelby Ingram in their SC were first away, and not seen again until our arrival at Porsche Centre Brighton, the rest of us well behind in the traffic.

Kon’s route was varied and interesting, taking us through the back blocks of Diggers Rest towards Gisborne then east via the country area of Wildwood towards Melbourne Airport. These were all interesting and Porsche friendly roads requiring some degree of driver attention, and from the group of Mercedes going in the opposite direction, used by other car Clubs as well. The traffic was heavy on the M80 after Melbourne Airport, but was still able to be driven at the legal limit, and soon we were

Run from Langwarrin Story by Geoffrey Mould, Photos by Neville Sampson A roll up of 30 Porsches arrived at Centenary Reserve car park in McClelland Drive, Langwarrin commencing from 10:00am for a 10:30am start of our run to Porsche Centre Brighton, with the carrot of a run along country roads and of the lunch awaiting us.

At this event on the day, it was the first time that we had our own Porsche QR Code, and everyone assisted in providing evidence of check in and double inoculation or a certified exemption. Prior to taking off on the run Geoffrey Mould our leader of our group went through the usual pre-event procedures and introduced the new members present and outlined the necessary behaviour requirements for drivers.

Our run left in an orderly manner and headed south along McClelland Drive then left into the Baxter-Tooradin Road. The run then took our group from East to North via 5-Ways and Clyde before again heading East then North along the long winding country road up to Emerald, arriving back to civilisation again. The run then followed the road around Cardinia Dam and into Wellington Road for the run back to Porsche Centre Brighton. Again, another check-in this time at Porsche Centre Brighton for the required QR code and vaccination check. How did Geoffrey Mould get back before all the others to do the check in when he was last to leave the car park in Langwarrin? Maybe his Cayman car has grown wings!

Thanks to Neville Samson for offering to take photos of the line-up of cars and the many of the entrants for our contribution to the club magazine.

Thanks to Barbara Mould and Vickie Morris in assisting with checking in at Porsche Centre Brighton. Also, thanks to Porsche Centre Brighton for the free give-aways of Porsche paraphernalia at the check-in counter. The lunch spread of finger food was spectacular, no shortage of delicious food and fine drinks.

Starting at the sensational Rivers nursery at Yarrambat, I ensured @reedminor was aware we needed plenty of time to check out the nursery and grab some plants before takeoff. Mission accomplished- I would have loved more time checking out the amazing shop and plants, but we weren’t the only couple shoving purchases into 911 corners. The drive? Seriously it was a winner! Normally getting to a PCV social run meeting point is a bit of a debate in our household. “What is the real meeting time?”, Peta will ask. “Or are we getting there on “Justin” time?”

A couple of lovely new members also started out the Monte at Diamond Creek including a father and son team (start them young!). One of the special things about PCV to me is how diverse the members are and how welcoming we are to new-comers. It was excellent to see so many younger couples! Again, we met some really lovely couples - Anna and Jake, Juliette (red car), and Margie and Jason (red car). So lovely to catch up with new friends met on the Tassie grand tour in April, meet new friends and just enjoy being “out”.

Meeting at a nursery and café therefore was an inspired move as far as our household was concerned. We agreed on a time to leave home and we actually left 5 minutes earlier than planned. I just needed to prepare myself for any purchases. My previous Porsche (a 1968 911L) had occasionally been called upon for nursery duty. I vividly recall a drive just prior to our first lockdown in early 2020, where Peta suggested we visit a rose nursery not far from the interesting (read twisty and fun) roads we were driving along. Despite fixed back sports seats, we comfortably fitted 3 potted standard roses into the car. Who says that an old Porsche is not a practical sports car?

DRIVER It was just wonderful getting out, and being able to socialise, with some nice food and wine. Thankfully, nearly everyone was wearing their name badges and lanyards. If we didn’t have those I’d be completely lost. Am I the only “driver” who can remember people’s car but not their names? Luncheon by Pike Peters

So, when it was determined we needed a new door mat, I thought great, I can fit that in easily. And we can still have fun on the drive!

Professional photos courtesy of Porsche Centre Brighton There is nothing more delightful than to see old friends and to meet new ones at a Porsche Club Victoria event. I spoke to several new members who were delighted by the thrill of the drive and the friendly and passionate Porsche tribe that welcomed them. Clyde and Alison White also know good food and wine, so when in these most capable hands, we all know that we are in for a treat. The destination PASSENGER

Justin with the infamous nursery purchase On route, I was however concerned about the frequency of horse poo for sale signs. Thankfully we didn’t need any, but I was going to draw the line at carting horse poo. The drive was excellent, the roads were great if a little narrow. I was grateful I was driving a relatively narrow mid 70’s 911, and not the latest 991 or 992. The couple in front of us navigated wonderfully and drove at a speed that was simultaneously fast enough to have fun, but also tolerable for navigators / passengers. The distance was also good – about 100k’s and 90 minutes or so, then a lovely lunch to look forward to. 28

The starting point was brilliant and would have loved longer. The smoko / toilet stop in Warrandyte seemed great but would have loved longer to linger prior to the final destination for lunch was great. Another brilliantly catered event organised by Clyde White….when this man is organising an event you know it’s going to be a good one! DRIVER We arrived at Porsche Centre Brighton at just the right time to get a nice parking spot. Driving a 70’s car means no reversing sensors. Just as I was about to ask Peta to help me get the car into a relatively tight parking spot, a late 60’s 911 similar to my old one caught my eye. Almost simultaneously I realised we were getting a very clear reflection off the showroom windows. Viola, problem solved, and 911 safely parked! The catering, the ambience, and the company were excellent – it was a wonderful

I am fortunate to have a terrific Porsche branded space that works so well as a ‘Melbourne weather proof’ undercover picnic space. Our Porsche Approved pavilion was the scene on Sunday 21 November of a sumptuous gathering of the tribe. A beautifully presented feast for the eyes, as well as the taste buds, beautiful wines and plenty to talk about as the members had all enjoyed one of three distinct runs to arrive at the lunch. The runs sounded fabulous – starting from three corners of our urban sprawl. From the Northeast in Yarrambat, Northwest at Calder Park, and Southeast from Langwarrin. Drivers and passengers arrived with huge grins, and tales of fantastic roads. My only regret is that I was unable to join one of the runs in my 944 S2 Cabriolet. I must look into staffing! This is the second year that we have been able to hold an undercover gathering, and I hope that this becomes a tradition for the Club.

Sunday 28th November saw 210 people incl members, their families and guests make their way to Sandown International Raceway to take part in the Sandown Experience – our End of Year Social Day. In normal times, we would have been running our Annual President’s Day, where competitors have the opportunity to take passengers with them around the circuit (at around 80% race pace) however Covid put paid to that format. So the competition group had decided that they would run this event as their final sprint meeting for the year under the title of “The Covid Cup”. When hearing this the Social Committee saw the opportunity of also providing other members with the option of completing parade laps (speed limited behind a pace car) around the fabulous Sandown Race Circuit, so what followed was some pretty solid organising to put together a joint Club Competition & Social Day. Bookings opened on Monday 15th November and after just 10 days we had over 200 registrations, it looked like we were on a winner …. So what was included in our day? • New Porsche Vehicle Display provided by Porsche Centre Brighton, Porsche Centre Doncaster and Porsche Centre Melbourne.

the complex visiting the new vehicle display, race car display and the elevated viewing area above the pit garages to watch the competition groups lapping the Sandown circuit.

The format of the Club Sprints saw entrants participate within classes which are based on the power to weight ratio of their particular vehicle, and this sees seven classes represented on track plus Entrée Class. During the day participants had the opportunity to view a New Vehicle Display which had been provided by our three Porsche Dealerships, Melbourne, Brighton and Doncaster. The vehicles that were on display included a Taycan Turbo and a Taycan Cross Turismo, a 911 (992), 2 x Cayenne GTS’s and a Macan GTS (Gen3). Plus as a real tease to the senses we also had available for viewing 2 x 911 GT2RSMR’s, a GT4 Club Sport, and last but not least a magnificent fully restored 911T from Porsche Classic Partner - Porsche Centre Melbourne.

These displays would not have been possible without the support of the three dealerships, and we would particularly like to thank Kate Holcombe – Marketing Manager PCM, Pike Peters – Marketing Manager – PCB and Ozlem Gunduz – Marketing Manager of PCD along with other staff from their individual dealerships. We were also joined on the day by Robert Gattereder – CEO of PMG (Preston Motors Group) the owners of PCB & PCD. Around 11.30 those who had registered for the event early, and had become one of lucky 60 who were to complete in the Parade Laps of the Sandown Circuit made their way to the dummy grid area, and at 11.45am a mandatory drivers briefing was conducted by Club President, and Clerk of the Course for the day – Mark Horton Andrews, who detailed the guidelines for the running of the upcoming Parade Laps. Drivers were organised into three groups of 20 vehicles and were issued with a coloured wrist band which identified them as being allowed to drive onto the racetrack.

• Escorted Pit Walks conducted during the day • Gourmet BBQ Lunch (provided by Fabulous Catering) • Unlimited Soft Drinks Package (as no alcohol allowed during sprint meeting) • Marquee with tables and seating provided. • Music provided during the lunch break • Plus if you were one of the first 60 registrations, you were offered the opportunity to complete a few laps of the fabulous Sandown International Raceway, (speed limited behind a pace car.) • Food and drinks were also available for those who stayed for the 4:30pm Trophy Presentation at the end of the day…… Centrally located in the Melbourne suburbs, Sandown Raceway is an easy venue to get to, and members started arriving around 10.0010.30 am. After parking their vehicles in either the pit parking area, or for those registered for the Parade Laps in the dummy grid area, they then proceeded to the Lunch Marquee and New Vehicle Display Viewing Area situated between the pits garages and the grandstand.

Once at the Lunch Marquee & viewing area attendees were able to move freely around 34

PORSCHE PARADE

The parade laps commenced at 12.15pm with the first group of 20 cars, and on their return to the pits, the pace car peeled off and picked up the 2nd group, leading them onto the circuit for their run, followed by the final group of 20 cars in group 3. While the Parade Lap participants were completing their laps of the Sandown Circuit, lunch commenced comprising a Gourmet BBQ consisting of lamb skewers, wagyu rump skewers, tiger prawns in garlic butter and lemon mayo, slow roasted pork ribs, chipolata hot dogs and wild whole mushrooms in truffle butter and thyme, a real feast, along with Soft drinks, Orange Juice and Sparkling Mineral Water, (as no alcohol was allowed until after 4:30pm at the end of the days competition.) Our special thanks to Adam Pope and his team from Fabulous Catering who did an outstanding job on the day. One of the biggest highlights for me on the day was to see the grins and smiles on the faces of the 60 members who participated in the Parade Laps as they alighted from the

vehicles on returning to the pits. This was only the third time in the history of the club that we have combined this type of activity with the competition group, and judging by the feedback received both on the day, and through our survey monkey questionnaire following the event, it won’t be the last. Our sponsor for the day was Porsche Cars Australia, and we were very fortunate to have as our special guest, Daniel Schmollinger – the New CEO and Managing Director of PCA (Porsche Cars Australia) and PRGA (Porsche Retail Group Australia).

their help with the pit walks, to Carly and Lisa for their untiring support in putting our events together, and to Anna Cook for assisting me on the day. It was not long before 4:30pm came, which saw the completion of the day’s racing, those who had stayed were then able to attend the Trophy Presentation for the Competition Group along with partaking in a selection of pizzas, hot snacks, sushi, beer, wine and soft drinks.

Danial Scmollinger (CEO & MD of PCA)

A great day was had by all who attended, the weather was fantastic, the food magnificent, and of course we all enjoyed the friendship and camaraderie that we share as members of the Porsche Club of Victoria. Proudly Sponsored By:

Daniel Schmollinger & Russell Sturzaker in front of Russell’s 924 Carrera GT Daniel Scmollinger commenced with PCA on 1st September this year as their New CEO and Managing Director, having taken over from Sam Curtis, who had held this role for the past 7 years. Daniel comes to Australia with a wealth of knowledge to all things Porsche having held the positions of Vice President of Marketing at Porsche China, Vice President Network Management and Development, overseeing dealer network expansion, and the Porsche Training Acadamy, amongst others. Daniel has worked for Porsche for the past 17 years, and we welcomed Daniel, his wife Constance and sons Peter & Jakob who joined him on the day at Sandown. Daniel also had the opportunity to join me, in my 924 Carrera GT taking part in group one of the Parade Laps.

We trust that all who attended had a fabulous day, and we look forward to joining us at Sandown next year, when we will be running this event format again on President’s Day.

On behalf of the Club, I would like to thank members of the Social and Competition Committees for their part in delivering ’The Sandown Experience’ a combined Club Social and Motorsport Competition Day for members and their families. The event attracted a high level of interest and participation across the wider membership with the support of Porsche Cars Australia and Porsche Centres Melbourne, Brighton, and Doncaster. The event proved to be a great success which we hope to make a regular fixture.

We conducted organised Pit Walks during the course of the day, and these were made up of groups of 10 - 20 attendees who were taken on a tour of the pit garages. Here they were given a detailed description on what is involved in a Club Sprint Day, along with how to prepare your car for the track, and how to join the Entrée Group.

In particular, my thanks on behalf of the Club go to Russell Sturzaker for developing the concept and bringing it to life on the day, and to Vicki Sturzaker for her contribution and support. Russell is a foundation member of the Club and his participation over the years has been considerable and his passion notable.

I would like to thank fellow club members Grant Stephenson and Richard Catchlove along with Dean Sammut from Evolve Driver Training for

Motorsport Competition Day The last Competition Event of the year at Sandown on 28 November quickly turned into a “Whole of Club” extravaganza as the Social Run of the day wound up at Sandown along with a host of other features – Dealership Involvement, Display Cars / Race Cars, a Marquee, Catering, background Music / Sax Player and over 200 Porsche Social Members to ensure an amazing function at Sandown. It’s been many years since our last Whole of Club Event so we all knew it was going to be a BIG Day; so much so there’s a Sister-Article in this Porsche Parade by Russell Sturzaker for all the highlights of the Social Event. Now back to the last Competition Event of the year and the weather gods were very kind to us with blue sky and mild temperatures which suit the Porsches perfectly; albeit did warm up after lunch. Normally we would conduct President’s Day at Sandown this time of year where Porsche Members take Sponsors, Family and Friends for a few laps around Sandown at mild pace. However COVID restrictions were very much alive during our preparations for the Sandown Event so the Competition Committee wisely decided to turn the Event into the COVID Cup. We envisaged ‘Passengers in a Porsche’ as too close for comfort and not a safe environment. Having decided on the COVID Cup Event we then had to find an enticing prize for the top three Drivers of the day. Those who meet / exceeded their target Class points for Sandown (think Lap Records). Our friends at Southern Cross Trophies came up with the design. Quite impressive and definitely memorable as the COVID Cup. We’re hoping the end of year Event is also an end of COVID Event. The Competition Committee’s next thought was to immortalise the day with a Video – across the Competition action and the Social spectacular. Our regular Film Crew at Neon Sheep Films obliged and devised an overall approach for the Video in collaboration with the Competition Committee vision. The Video should hit the silver screen (ha-ha) early in 2022, so look out for notifications in “Porsche Updates” or search out the Video on the Net. You’re sure to find Neon Sheep Films great work in capturing the PCV Sandown 360 Event for prosperity - over a number of years. The day started in a frenzy as nearly 90 Porsche Drivers rocked up to Sandown bright and early - eager to get some Track Time. There was a fair spread of Porsches across the Competition Classes and over 10 Entrée Entries wanting to measure and enhance their skills and vehicles on the exciting Sandown layout. Additionally, close to 60 Officials, Track Personnel (Porsche Member Volunteers) and Guests as well as Crew, Safety Personnel and Catering turned up to inject some calm into the morning mix. The vast majority of Porsches scrubbed up bright and shiny; there were even some newly painted cars in the Pits – notably Peter Harrison’s 2004 Black 996 GT3 Mk2 and yours truly in my 1983 Red 911SC. It would appear Peter’s new paint job was the result of a pirouette at the very wet Mobil 1 PCV Sandown 360 back in April 2021. In Pete’s words Paint and Custom Workshop did an all-round Great Job. My paint job was in response to years of Porsche Members noting the unsightly chip marks on the front of my Porsche (ha-ha). Ironically the same Porsche Members said my Porsche is now too pretty to be a Track Car (ha-ha). I must say Luxury Auto Body did an excellent job - Many Thanks to Ange and Danny. So some good things did come out of the COVID driven Event Cancellations. One of the first orders of business is the Driver’s Briefing highlighting Track Conditions, Safety Protocols etc., which occurred around 9:00am. Well Frenzy then quickly turned into Exhilaration / Acceleration (same thing) as drivers readied themselves for Track Time. With the last Competition Event some 5 months earlier in the year and suffering numerous cancellations to Events the Drivers found “serenity” in anticipation of turning a wheel in anger. Having successfully completed the Safety Checks, Porsches/Drivers were then sorted into 6 Groups of ~15 to tackle Sandown - for around 10 minutes a session. Such groups of similar lap times around Sandown rolled through the day from 9:30am to 4:30pm. The only break being lunch around 12:30pm for an hour allowing some sustenance for Drivers, Officials and Volunteers which was provided by the Porsche Club. During the lunch break the Social members were treated to Parade Laps round Sandown under the guidance of a lead and trail

Competition Porsche to ensure a controlled environment aligned to Safety Protocols. The Social Members on Track were arranged into 3 Groups of 20 Porsches for 4 mild laps around Sandown to hopefully get a sense of excitement provided on Track days. All Social Members then enjoyed a scrumptious lunch, after which interested Members were invited to Pit Walks. A few Competitors joined in the Pit Walks as hosts / guides through the garages to enhance a better understanding of the requirements for Track Day Events. The Groups noted and discussed the Driver Training available (PCV Entrée Class and professional providers like EVOLVE, etc.), the Safety aspects of the Drivers (Race Suits, Helmets, HANS, etc.), and our Porsches themselves (Rollover Bars, Cages (of varying degrees), etc.) as well as the PCV Competition Processes put in place for each Porsche & Driver at our Events (Drivers Briefing, Scrutiny, Flaggies, etc.). Other Topics included Time involved and the Costs involved (“How long’s a piece of string”). The interactive Pit Walks were deemed very interesting and positive. Notably our very own ‘P.P.’ (Past Presidents) Michael O’Brien and Tony Carolan started Competition Events after a similar experience. As the Timed Competition Sessions wound down around 4:30pm, PCV President Mark Horton Andrews presented end of year Competition Trophies thereby allowing calculation of the COVID Cup Podium Winners in the background. Mark started proceedings by reminding all those at the celebratory function, the Porsche Club understands Covid has impacted families economically, physically and emotionally and has caused great trauma to some of our members and the public at large. Our genuine thoughts are with those impacted. The Porsche Club’s intention is and was always to celebrate hopefully a return to normality not only in the Club activities but more generally. As the food and beverages were made available, Mark presented the Major Awards as follows:-

Mark then presented the Class Winners as provided below:The remaining Awards affectionally known as the Bucket Lists of Driver Podium finishes throughoutthe year were made available for collection.

Andrew Bonwick as Chief Steward for the Day (as well as I.T. / Web Master) frantically worked on determination of the COVID Cup Podium across all Groups of Competition Classes but faced hardware & software technical difficulties; so the deserved COVID Cup Winners (below) were presented after the event.

The last hour of the day centred on some nice food, sought after refreshments and great company – to wind down, relive the moments of the day and the crazy year that was 2021 as well as the first and hopefully last COVID Cup Event whilst looking forward to 2022. As was said from the outset – it was a BIG Day where nearly 400 Porsche Club Victoria (PCV) Members got together as like-minded enthusiasts and had some well-deserved Fun. CHEERS!

Porsche Cars Australia Celebrates 70 Years On 1 November 1951, Australian businessman Norman Hamilton introduced the first two Porsche 356 sportscars to arrive in Australia at a special event at the South Melbourne Town Hall. Seventy years later in nearby Port Melbourne, Porsche Cars Australia has held a gala event to mark 70 years for Porsche in Australia. A special highlight: the 911 GT3 70 Years Porsche Australia Edition.

911 GT3 70 Years Porsche Australia Edition – Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur

Australia is one of the oldest Porsche markets in the world, and last night’s event was an inspiring nod to the origins of its journey in Australia. Joining the more-than 450 special guests was the new limited-edition 911 GT3 70 Years Porsche Australia Edition. This special commemorative model is based on the new 911 GT3 with Touring Package. It is the first time that Porsche has based a market-specific edition on a 911 GT product, and the first time a special edition has been created by Porsche for the Australian market. 911 GT3 70 Years Porsche Australia Edition

of Australia’s current and former Porsche racing drivers, including champion Porsche racer Jim Richards. Joining the celebrations were Australian Porsche owners from all generations, including Kate Reid, co-founder of Melbourne’s famed Lune Croissanteries.

Limited number of the edition will be produced, each painted in a new customised colour developed by Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur. The colour, Fish Silver Grey Metallic, is a modern interpretation of ‘Fish Silver Grey’, the colour of one of the first two Porsche 356 imported into Australia back in 1951. Also on display was the all-electric Taycan, joined by other notable Porsche models, including the new Macan, which is making its national introduction to the Australian media this week. Among the various classic Porsche cars on display were models that have had an impact in the Australian market in every decade since the 1950s, from the 356 to the 928 to the current-day 911. The event’s Master of Ceremonies was popular Australian entertainment identity Tommy Little, who introduced video messages from two very special guests. Detlev von Platen, Member of the Porsche AG Executive Board responsible for Sales and Marketing, shared an inspiring message of thanks and celebration. Nine-time Formula One Grand Prix winner, World Endurance Champion and Porsche Brand Ambassador Mark Webber also shared his best wishes, reflecting on his relationship with Porsche and its place in the hearts of Australian enthusiasts.

The 911 GT3 70 Years Porsche Australia Edition was designed in collaboration with experts from the Style Porsche design team, the Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur customisation department and Porsche Cars Australia. The special edition boasts various unique exterior and interior design features to celebrate this year’s significant milestone.

Daniel Schmollinger, Porsche Cars Australia’s Managing Director and CEO The event’s entertainment featured three major pieces, each celebrating three key eras from Porsche’s seven decades in Australia: The 1950s and 1960s, the 1970s to the 1990s, and the 21st century into the future. Porsche Cars Australia has also created a commemorative book to mark Porsche’s seven decades in Australia, charting the brand’s journey ‘down under’ since the 1950s with a special collection of images and stories.

It’s a fascinating story about a chance meeting between Norman Hamilton and Ferry Porsche in 1951. It happened when Porsche’s then test driver Richard von Frankenberg introduced them after first encountering Hamilton on Austria’s famous Grossglockner Pass, having overtaken the Australian in his 356 during a test run earlier that day. History was made at that first meeting. Hamilton became only the second Porsche agent outside Europe, following Max Hoffman in the USA, making Australia one of Porsche’s earliest markets. Alongside Porsche Cars Australia’s Managing Director and CEO, Daniel Schmollinger, were former leaders of Porsche’s Australian operations, as well as many renowned figures in the local Porsche community. Other special guests included a variety

Survey Co-ordinator and Surveyor

The aim of the 2021 Member Survey by the Social Committee was to give each and every member the opportunity to have their say and further; to provide the PCV with demographic data for the strategic planning of future events. The survey analysis defined scenarios and trends that will impact on future logistics, financial planning and the PCV culture. Of prime importance was that the Club does the following: • Continues to meet the needs of active members. • Provides quality events. • Creates events that are inclusive for all, including inactive members. Survey Questions Content was derived from members’ feedback comments held in the Survey Monkey archive - dating from 2016 to current day. To gain deeper insights, comments were also sought from individual members, newer and older. Members Involved in the Survey: Survey respondent’s: 1126 Primary Members (668 active & 458 inactive). Completed responses: 388 Response rate: 46% of active members & 18% of inactive members

Mid Week Run to Marysville Story & Photos: Maria Del Gallo 1st December 2021

The first day of Summer was a perfect day for the Mid week run to Marysville. We met a McDonalds Ringwood Carpark. Everyone was keen to start driving as it had been 18 months since the last Mid week run. Alison checked everyone in as well as ticking off our vaccination certificates and gave an overview of the run. We left Ringwood and went through Wandin and Yarra Junction. Some of us took the option for a coffee stop in Warburton before the fun began on the Reefton Spur. This is where the road narrows but are definitely Porsche friendly, especially with a rear wheel driving Porsche which make the undulating roads effortless. The scenery was beautiful with an abundance of regeneration on the hills. After a short stop at Lake Mountain to admire the ‘Porsche’ views we arrived at our lunch destination, The Duck Inn Marysville, which didn’t disappoint. Everyone enjoyed the catch up over lunch before heading back to Melbourne via the spectacular Black Spur. Thank you to Alison Belot for a most enjoyable Mid Week Run.

Mezger Engine First off, the ‘Mezger engine’ moniker is a bit of a misnomer as legendary engine builder, Hans Mezger has been designing Porsche powerplants since the Sixties. However, in the 911 world, the term has become synonymous with the engine fitted to GT3s (up until the introduction of the 991 generation). Unlike the M96 and M97 motors with their ‘integrated dry sump system’ (the two-piece crankcase design is, in reality, little more than a modified wet sump), the M96/72 ‘Mezger’ engine utilises a true dry sump thanks to its roots in motorsport. The engine was initially designed for the twin-turbocharged 911 GT1 Le Mans racer, meaning that, to reduce oil surge (and a subsequently dangerous drop in pressure) during hard cornering, oil is harvested from the GT1-derived crankcase by two scavenge pumps. This oil is transferred to a separate, baffled oil tank (which is mounted to the engine) before oil pumps – one mounted in each cylinder head – pump the lubricating fluid through the various oil galleries.

The four-valve head’s design is derived from the water-cooled 959, although extensive work was needed to mate it to the 911 GT3’s cylinder size. In the 996 GT3 Mk1 the bore was 100mm, with a stroke of 76.4mm while, by the Mezger unit’s swansong in the 997 GT3 RS 4.0, the bore had been expanded to its maximum of 102.7mm, with the remaining 200cc of capacity increase achieved with an 80.4mm stroke. Thanks to its racing intentions, the GT3’s motor doesn’t suffer from IMS bearing failures like its M96 and M97 cousins. While the engine still uses an intermediate shaft to drive the camshafts, the oil pumps are driven directly by the crank. What’s more, the GT1-derived block has a different oil gallery design that ensures the IMS bearing remains lubricated at all times.

The engine is very similar in design to the flat six found in the 962 prototype however, where that powerplant used separate cylinder heads for each cylinder, the M96/72 uses a single head per bank. ISSUE 4, 2021

Porsches & Coffee Run to Mt Macedon

We joined the Porsche Club just before this year’s lockdown so we were excited to finally take part in a club event. We awoke blessed with a glimpse of summer - It would be a day for driving with the windows down. Arriving at the meeting place it was clear we were in the right location. A nice variety of models adorned the parking spaces, with 911s representing the last 4 decades on display. It was also cool to see a mint green 968 Cabriolet, which I didn’t know came in a drop top variant, let alone in such a striking colour. Kon went out of his way to make us feel welcome before the briefing. Maybe a little too welcome… as when Kon was looking for a volunteer to do a write up of the day’s run, with a bit of nudging from Amanda I volunteered. We headed to our cars and fired up the ignitions. The low rumble of several flat sixes idling in chorus as we prepare to take off was something special to be a part of for the first time. After departure, we got broken up into smaller groups due to the short green light at our first turn. We ended up being near the front of our group but the black 991 Turbo in front took off at a pace I couldn’t match, so before long we were at the front of the queue with Amanda unexpectedly promoted to chief navigator. There were a few relationship testing moments but after a while we got into the groove. It all went pretty well… Until it didn’t. We missed the turn onto Bardwell drive, and as we were at the front of the queue, we took another unsuspecting soul on our impromptu detour. We were fortunate in a number of ways. Firstly, after we realised that we had gone astray and pulled over, Angelo miraculously appeared in his immaculate 944 and offered to lead us back on track. Yet another new member, Paul, who had been ahead of us missed the same turn and managed to find us in his 986 Boxster S, so we formed a 3 car convoy for the remainder of the run.

52

PORSCHE PARADE

Secondly, our detour led us to the “inside” of the proposed run, so it ended up being a shortcut rather than taking us miles out of our way. There were a few nice curves and it was a joy following Angelo in the 944, hearing the distinctive sound of the 4 cylinder on song. It was an enjoyable cruise through picturesque countryside. We noted the change in vegetation and drop in temperature on the short climb up Mt Macedon. There is something special about the way the road undulates between the curves on the final stretch to the meeting spot at the Top of the Range Cafe. One advantage of our unplanned shortcut was that we beat the rush to place our coffee orders. We were able to take in the vistas from the balcony as the clouds cleared and it wasn’t long before we heard the distinctive sound of the rest of the club approaching. We enjoyed getting to finally meet some of the other members and hear stories about their cars over a warm drink. As a final treat on our departure, a Taycan had parked next to us. It was the first chance for us to see the future of the Porsche marque up close. Amanda and I would like to thank all at the club who organised and coordinated the event, along with the members on the day who made us feel welcome.

Early 911 Register

Yarra Ranges to Diamond Creek Hotel Run Story & Photos: Rob Gocentas Sunday 14 November 2021

Out of the world’s longest ‘lockdown’, PCV members braved frosty morning air and forecasted torrential rain for the first Early 911 Register Run in sometime. It was also a first for me, as the novice Register Captain, and new member, Teesaan Koo. It was great to see a magnificent assortment of early, mid and modern cars in both rear and mid- engine designs, eager to celebrate freedom with some of Victoria’s great driving roads. The first stage took us through picturesque, windy roads of Kinglake, St Andrews, Paton Hill and Watsons Creek. Some would say that it had been cursed by a Briefing tempting fate: “There is never any traffic on Dawsons Road”, a largely unheard- of single-pass, twisting road in the Yarra Glen. Early on this overcast Sunday morning, Dawsons Road was hampered by a mammoth machine with an elderly hatted farmer at the wheel. A swift- moving Silverado with no concept of a shared carriage-way also came to the party. Testament to the foresight of Ferdinand Porsche, the narrow dimensions of many a Porsche is an asset!

A special thankyou to Reece Plumbing, Diamond Creek, for safe-keeping our magnificent machines in their carpark during our lunch. Thank you to the Dark Horse Café, Watsons Creek for a refreshing morning tea and to the Diamond Creek Hotel for our lunch. It is great to be out of ‘lockdown’ and to enjoy our finely engineered vehicles, great roads and the company of PCV members, again- regardless of the challenges nature will send our way on the day. See you at the next run!

The second stage included the winding Meyers Creek Road which in dry conditions is an icon for driving enthusiasts. The flow of recent rainwaters over every twist in the road, kept drivers focussed and tested their responses. It was too much for one non-PCV member/ non Run participant with a Cayenne coming to grief on a turn. Thanks to Run participants, the vehicle was soon on the road to recovery. For the most part, winding roads, gave great driving pleasure to the pilots and passengers of both rear and mid- engine machines regardless of their age. The heavens did finally open up, during some of the windiest roads but did not last long and did not hamper spirits.

Mid 911 Register Run to Malmsbury

Story: Paul Sbrissa Photos:Paul Blackie & Rod Popovic Sunday 12th December

It was the last register run for 2021 and the sun was shining down on us as we all met at the BP service centre in Rockbank. Today we were heading to Trentham for morning tea and onto “The Stables” in Malmsbury for lunch. During the morning briefing we welcomed first time run attendee David Hopkins and his Silver 1981 911SC. David made the trip back from NSW just for the run. That’s commitment. Well done David. Looking forward to seeing you at many more runs. We had a great mix of cars, as always, and given the lack of traffic lights, we were in convoy all the way into Trentham. I was at the back of the convoy, allowing me to take in the sight of 15 odd Porsches snaking their way up the mountain. Magic. Trentham was thankfully a little quiet which provided us with plentiful parking. After the obligatory coffee, a chat about land speed records (seems a shame not to give it another go Jane…) and admiring Jim and Mandy’s recent purchase (997.2 Carrera, very nice guys) it was off to Malmsbury. The roads through Lyonville, Bullarto and Musk showcased the power of mother nature. Many a tree succumbed to the high winds that have been battering the state of late. It made for spectacular and eerie viewing. As was the house in Lauriston. Not so much eerie, but sporting a turret it is certainly, well, different. We all had pre-lunch drinks in a private area behind the bar before settling to our tables for lunch. And it was at lunch that I learnt we had a movie star in our presence. Well, not so much a movie star per se but the owners of a movie star car. Registration, TwoHands. Then there’s the one that got away hey Paul and Deborah… It really is amazing the stories and people you meet at a PCV event. Here’s to 2022 and a lot more PCV events. 56

PCV is fortunate to have a wonderful group of marshals who help run our motorsport competition program. In acknowledgement of this, our regular active marshals were invited to a BBQ in Yarra Glen to thank them for their time and efforts throughout the previous couple of years. We sincerely thank Andrew Bonwick and Stephanie Wylaars for making their property available to the Club and putting on a superb lunch. It was a great day, the lunch and desserts were better than excellent and the atmosphere was great. Just a great day, regardless of the sudden heavy rain shower!

Boxster & Cayman Register

Run to Gisborne Story: Andrew Aldons Photos: Karen Bentley Sunday 5th December

After the usual 2021 postponements/ rescheduling due to you-know-what we finally met at McDonalds Mill Park on a brisk December Sunday morning. Around 16 mid-mounted cars across all 4 generations were lined up for the Mcpatrons to take in as they queued for their drive through goodies. It was my first time seeing the Miami blue 718s (one S and one GTS) in person and they dazzled in the morning light. Our Register captain Ken had us all gather ‘round for the briefing and then we were off. And what a cracking set of roads we had in front of us! This was a really good drive – and while we went off-route pretty early due to not paying enough attention to the nav., we (eventually) ended up finding our destination after a thoroughly enjoyable hour and a half. The official route, which we spent at least some of our time on was an awesome blend of slow corners and faster open sections, much of which were ‘back’ roads with little traffic. Kudos to Ken for such a wellplanned route. We arrived at the golf club (and parked as far as we could away from the hook/slicers). After a very pleasant lunch, we left to return to Melbourne and I was lucky enough to follow one of the Miami blue 718s back along the official route. Once again, there was very little traffic to 58

contend with and we were able to link our turns and otherwise enjoy our cars on a beautiful sunny afternoon. This was my first run with the club and despite failing the nav. test (and also failing the never volunteer to write the story test), it was a pretty awesome day. Thanks to all involved and Merry Christmas.
