The Outsiders Book Cover Design The concept behind the design for this book cover came from one of the main quotes in the book - "Stay gold, Ponyboy, stay gold". I noticed that all of the previous cover designs for this book were highly image based, through photographs or illustrations, so I thought I'd try a different approach. The typography was hand-rendered, then traced over on Illustrator for the front cover. The serif typeface was replaced with Cambria, as this typeface was most similar to the original drawing I produced. The style of script font came from the idea of the book being set in the 60s - I straight away thought of the typeface used for Grease, but wanted to create something a bit classier.
The soc's idea of having a good time is beating up Greasers like Ponyboy. Ponyboy knows what to expect and knows he can count on his brothers and friends - until the night someone takes things too far.
As the story is highly violent, with scenes of death and drama occuring throughout, I thought it would make sense to make it look as though blood was spilled onto the paper used for the cover. The target audience for the book wasn't that distinct. The book is obviously for teenagers, so illustrations and bright colours weren't necessarily needed, as teenagers will be attracted to more mature looking books. I decided to try and target my book design towards the female readers, as the story of the book would usually attract more males, due to the action, violence and mainly boy characters featured in the story line. The blood on the cover could also attract the male audience.
