What is a book?

From looking into different conceptual Fine Artists, I have decided to produce a set of 5 books, each made in a way that would look as though it was produced by the chosen artists. I intend to go about this is a way that could possibly offend the way that artist chooses to work and question what a book is.

Tracey Emin loves to offend the viewer, whether it's through the way her work looks or the content itself. Therefore, I have decided to create a book that is all about being offensive and standing out. I think the book should be quite dirty to look at - something that you wouldn't want to pick up and read.

When it comes to Michael Craig-Martin, I want to focus on An Oak Tree that he exhibited in 1973. I have decided to collect some objects within glass bottles and present them within a case and call the piece A Book. This will question what a book is, whilst holding a sense of pretentiousness.

The Chapman Brothers also work on the idea of shocking the audience and offending the viewer. When it comes to producing their book, I want to create something that shocks you and makes you wonder how the context of the book could possibly be published, through a variety of defaced and vandalised objects within photographs throughout the book.

Rachel Whiteread likes to work with the idea of negative space in her installations, so I intend to produce something similar, however not out of concrete (as this would be hard to get hold of). I will work with the negative spaces of a book and typography, to produce something that you recognise but can't quite work out what it is exactly.

A thing that I have found about Damien Hirst, is that a lot (or most) of his work hasn't been constructed by him. Therefore, I have decided that the book that I will produce will be incomplete - instruct the reader to construct the book themselves, rather than me producing it. I also thought that I could just set this deconstructed book in resin so that it looks like a piece of Hirst's work.

Each of my 5 publications will be delivered together as a set of 5 books, however the choice of stock etc will probably vary to suit the artist that the publication is representing.

I intend to use the same typeface throughout the set of books, to help keep the designs consistent and linked into one another, rather than 5 separate books. There won't be a lot of text within the publications, as I want to keep it more visual based - more about the work of the designers, than the views/text.

RACHEL WHITEREAD Most of Tracey Emin's work is vulgar and sex orientated. I have decided to produce a book that you wouldn't want to pick up It will be interesting to work with the or read due to how dirty and disgusting it negative space of a book and the context looks and feels. This means that the content of the book. I thought I could show this will have to be just as disgusting to read. by using the laser cutter to produce layers of negative spaces that make up an image when placed on top of one another.

THE

MICHAEL CRAIG-MARTIN I intend to create a message in a bottle, calling it 'A Book'. I will either create 1 small bottled message, or a set of a few different ones displayed in a cabinet or box, similar to the image above with the bottles in a line.

CHAPMAN BROTHERS I intend to produce a book filled with images of defaced and vandalised artwork/ objects that are well known. I intend to deface the pieces myself, through different materials and process as well as digitally. I intend to be as crude as I possibly can be.

DAMIEN HIRST The thing that interests me the most with Hirst's work is how everything is encased within glass and cut in half. I have decided that my book could be made out of glass itself, but not bound together to show the constructivist way that Hirst works in.

An easy and cost effective way to print onto the I will be speaking to a glass blower, to see glass bottles for my message in a bottle designs what is possible when it comes to creating would be to use Inkjet Waterslide Decal Paper. the Damien Hirst publication. It will be quite ironic and witty in the fact that I won't be able to do the glass blowing myself, so someone else will have to produce the glass book for me - reflecting Hirst's work ethic.

LASER CUTTER

I would quite like to use the letterpress to produce some of the typography within the publications. I think this could work well for the Tracy Emin book, as I could play around with the positioning of the typography so that it looks broken and messy.

STICKERS MARKER PENS & FINE LINERS I intend to use the laser cutter to produce one of the books, as it will be a quick and effective way of producing a book about negative space. This method of production could also help to create the glass book pages for the Damien Hirst publication.

Printing onto stickers will be easy and cost effective, and could easily be used for any of the publications. If the Inkjet Waterslide Decal Paper wasn't accessible, this would be the back up option for labelling the messages in bottles. Could also be used for defaced images.

Marker/fine liner drawings will be used mainly within the Chapman Brothers publication as it is a common and quick way of defacing work.

It is also an easy medium to get hold of, so won't take up a lot of production time - I also won't have to take another induction for this!

Each publication is going to have to be bound differently, due to the materials that they will be constructed out of. I have decided to look at various types of binding to suit the stock that I intend to use. I think that using the same stock for each book, but changing the way that it is used will hold consistency across the publications. The Hirst glass book will need different considerations.

THE CHAPMAN BROTHERS

Because I'll be making a dirty book for Emin, I have decided to use standard metal coil binding to bind the book, as this way I can play around with the metal to make it look rusty, old and used. The coils can also be pulled around so that they are misshaped and so the pages don't necessarily stay put.

For this publication, I have decided to use stab stitch binding. I think that this binding will work well, because I want to use a clean layout within most of the publication.

I want to create a really nice looking book that is full of shocking images - making it ironically designed. The stock will consist of an off-white colour for the inside pages and possibly a light grey stock for the cover.

MICHAEL CRAIG-MARTIN

I have decided to use coptic stitching to bind the Whiteread publication, as it is a simple yet extremely effective type of binding that will look nice and will suit the rest of the publication. I will use the same off-white and light grey stock as the Craig-Martin publication, which will also hopefully be used for the other publications as well, in one way or another.

This publication will be made out of sheets of glass, so this will be hard to effectively bind.

I also want to create something that isn't a whole thing as Hirst likes to cut his animals in half, rather than keeping them whole.

Therefore, I won't be using any form of binding for this book, however it will need to be kept in a box of some sort to keep it from breaking.

As I'll be creating small messages in bottles for Craig-Martin, I won't need a form of binding, as I won't be creating a steretypical book. However, I might place the glass bottle(s) in a wooden case, to keep them together as a set and safe.
