A Message from the President

Calling all classic cars, Calling all carts, it’s time for the 4th of July parade and WE WANT YOU!! This is one of my favorite events here at the Club so whether you want to be in the parade or just watch from your front yard we have lots of options for you. Beside the fun carnival set up on the driving range with climbing walls and mechanical bulls with a picnic style dinner and a DJ, we also have a fancier meal served upstairs with some of Chefs finest in an air-conditioned setting so you can take your pick. Use the App under Upcoming Events and sign up. Make sure you also reserve a space for your car/cart if you want to be in the parade. And carts are available to rent from the Club if you would like to try it.

The following day July 5th the Main Clubhouse will close down for the long-awaited refresh. This is expected to be a 2-month project because there is a lot to be done. We have a beautiful herringbone hardwood floor being installed in the front living room and the Bistro Lounge. There is a custom-made carpet going across the 3 back dining rooms, the Bistro Dining room, the Versailles and the Fleur de Lis will all be in a speckled green and camel art nouveau pattern. The walls will get a lighter and brighter coat of paint and be finished off with new artwork.

The Bistro Lounge will also be getting a makeover. Besides the floor, we are making the bar longer and adding stools as well as making it more user friendly for staff by improving its functionality behind the bar. We are considering also adding a more casual component to the Lounge by taking out the standard tables and making it into more of a gathering area. Adding some sofas and low chairs around smaller tables and a few high-top tables along the windows to increase the seating in the room; as well as, make it more functional for the way we are now using the space. The Board was told loud and clear in last year’s survey that Membership wants more casual spaces to hang out and we think this would help fill that void. The Board is still discussing this idea; so, it will probably not be in place for the reopening of the Clubhouse.

While the Clubhouse is closed, we will have our meals, drinks and events available down at the Palm Grille. It has been given its own facelift with new furniture and light fixtures as well as our fabulously reinstated palm trees so it is ready for a stream of visitors! Chef will

expand the menu for this season and Allyson Brown and her team are working to create some fun events and takeaway options to keep as all busy during the shutdown.

The golf course will also be shut down for it’s yearly aerification from July 10-27 reopening Friday, July 28. Cody our Superintendent and our ground crews will be hard at work aerifying, crews will be reworking several drainage areas to mitigate wet lies and the company that installed our bunkers will be here making some repairs due to settling of the liners. It will be the optimum growing season to allow the greens and fairways to come back lush and ready for play.

Well, that’s all for now. I hope you come out to see and enjoy all of the fun new toys we are acquiring and especially I’ll look for you at the 4th of July event. The fireworks at the end are All-star and remind me of why we are ROCC!

Ladies Association

The Ladies Association monthly Happy Hours will continue through the summer with some location changes while the main Clubhouse is closed for renovations. The ROCCLA happy hour is the last Wednesday of every month with complimentary hors d’oeuvres and member sign beverages. For more information on our happy hours, please contact Roc’C Semmelbeck (semmelbeckr@gmail.com) or Su Kamis (suryani.kamis@gmail.com)

Our annual ROCCLA Cocktails & Croquet Happy Hour on April 26th was an ideal time to celebrate Charlotte Cooper, the first female individual Olympic gold medalist. The ladies enjoyed refreshing gin gimlets and croquet on the lawn prior to sauntering up to the Palm Grille where they snacked on appetizers of chicken Cornish pastries; cucumber & cream cheese finger sandwiches; onion, goat cheese and tomato quiche; and strawberries & cream.

Julie Gray organized an interesting Preservation Houston Historic Woodland Heights walking tour on Monday, April 17th for a group of 20 followed by lunch at Lola Diner on Yale. Be sure to check your weekly emails and the Royal Oaks Country Club app for information and sign up as plans are finalized for future field trips.

HCC Fashionable Lunch on April 13th included a tour of HCC’s extensive fashion archives followed by a multicourse luncheon at HCC’s culinary school. Thank you, Suzette Brimmer, for making this tour possible.

The Royal Bookies Book Club meets at 4:00 pm each month just prior to the ROCCLA Happy Hour. “These Precious Days: Essays” by Ann Patchett was discussed at the May 31st gathering. Kate Quinn’s “The Diamond Eye” was the book of choice for June 28th; and Barbara Kingsolver’s “Demon Copperhead” for August 30th. Note, there won’t be a July meeting. All are welcome to join in anytime. If you’ve read a book you’d like to recommend to the group, Karen Shewbart (kshewbart@comcast.net) and Ellie Beeckman (beeckmae@sbcglobal.net) would love to hear from you.

A Message from Chef

Dear members,

Summertime and living is easy…Even at the Club this season as we are closing the Bistro for full remodelling.

We will welcome you all summer at the Palm Grille with the same positive energy as the Bistro all year round.

New chairs, new light fixture, new tables and new plates will make your experience at the Palm Grille even more enjoyable.

Before that happend, we will celebrate July 4th in style.

Some new dishes were added to our menu last month and we are planning to bring more changes when the Bistro reopens in September.

I will use this quieter time to focus on training our kitchen staff along with visiting different suppliers and searching for better quality ingredients. During the summer closure, the clubhouse aesthetic

will be renewed, modernized, and brightened. In the kitchen we will take inspiration from that and work to refine our dishes offering.

I know that a majority of you will travel and enjoy some quiet time far from the Houston heat. Please enjoy yourself and whenever you are around, we will be happy to welcome you at the club around the pool or at the Palm Grille.

The Wine Times

It sure is hot in Houston these days and we are all doing our best to keep cool and comfortable during this Summertime weather. That may involve a trip to the pool with a nice beverage, or locking yourself in the coldest room in your home until it passes. I would like to leave you with 3 tips on how to achieve this cool and comfortable feeling* outside your home:

1. Drink Cold Wine – A very simple piece of advice that means exactly what it implies. Make sure your rose and white wines are on ice and ready to cool even the most heated of moments; that may be poolside with your friends, or a nice dinner on the patio (preferably in a shaded area). Here at the Club, we have a new rose by the name Rumor that could fulfill that very need, or a nice glass of our new Sancerre Domaine Benoit Renaissance.

2. Checkout Our Summer Cocktail Menu –With the change in season and weather, the cocktail menu followed accordingly. New flavors of summer hit the cocktail menu in a refreshing manner. We have a new Hibiscus and Strawberry Margarita and the Pink Limeade which are particularly refreshing! Both cocktails can be ordered at the Palm Grille as well!

3. Enjoy A Frozen Treat – This is where things get a little more fun and creative. The Palm Grille and Turn will be offering a couple more options for frozen drinks besides the Royal Hammer. We will be offering options such as frozen margaritas, and frozen rose as well!

With these tips you should have no trouble achieving a state of comfort and coolness. The last place you want to be is missing out on the fun during this summer!

And for those traveling this summer, these tips can be applied as well. Safe travels!

Social Life

Hello Members,

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer vacations and time with friends and family! We are looking forward to reopening the Clubhouse in September after the updates are complete and can’t wait to plan events in the revived spaces!

While July and August will be much slower for us this year, we do have a couple of things on the calendar. Our annual 4th of July event is always a favorite amongst the membership, which happens on the actual holiday. We kick off the event with a golf cart parade through the neighborhood, complete with a local firetruck, live band, vintage cars, and beads & candy to throw out! Then, we have two parties that evening, one on the Driving Range, and one inside in the Bistro Dining Room. The Driving Range event is open to all ages and a great place for families to enjoy face painting, balloon artists, inflatables, games and fireworks! The Bistro Dining Room is for adults only, for those that would like to enjoy a nice dinner, light music, and watch the fireworks from the balcony.

We are also hosting our annual Wet & Wild Day for kids on Saturday, July 29th, which is a complimentary event for members. This year, we are excited to add a foam party aspect to the event, and will still have the waters slides, slip n slides, water balloons, snow cones and bubbles!

As always, we may have some other “pop-up” events this summer, so be sure to check your emails and the app for updates. I look forward to seeing you around the Club!

Greens Update

As I write this, we are in the beginning of a week of oppressive heat with multiple days in a row forecasted to be over 100 degrees. This is just the beginning of summer and I’m sure we will have many more like it to follow. Please take care when on the course this summer and stay hydrated.

As you are probably aware, we have elected to again skip the early summer aerification in an effort to allow for more optimal playing days during the summer months. Our first summer aerification this year is scheduled to begin on July 10th with us wrapping things up by July 27th. We will be utilizing this time to continue with the aggressive cultural practices necessary for the long term health of the course you have become used to over the last couple of years. The greens and fairways will be aerated two times each with heavy sand top-dressing to both areas. Sanding the fairways is a practice we began in 2021 and will be continued again this year. The addition of top-dressing the fairways is an effort to improve the playable area of the fairway and reduce the dreaded “mud ball”. In addition to aerating and sanding greens and fairways we will be addressing tee boxes and approaches as well. Cart path repair is again scheduled to take place during this time along with multiple sub-surface drainage installations in key areas around the course. This time will also be used to re-grass select tee boxes to Zeon Zoysia grass. It should be noted that the range will have limited

availability during the aerification closure. The range will be completely closed to practice Monday, July 10 – Thursday, July 13. The range tees will reopen Friday, July 14. The three practice greens will remain closed for the entire closure.

We are continually looking for ways to improve the overall landscaping around the Club and the last couple of months have been no exception. The summer annuals were installed all around the club during the month of May and are really showing their beauty. In addition to annuals, we are replacing plant material in beds around the course that are in need of a little refresher. Watch these areas throughout the summer as they will continue to fill out and mature. We are nearing completion of the landscaping installation around the pool and tennis areas. The new landscaping has transformed the area and is a terrific addition to the club.

We in Golf Course Maintenance look forward to seeing you out here during the sweltering heat of summer and are always here working to provide you with the best conditions possible for your next round of golf.

The World of Golf

The summer heat has arrived and with it the summer schedule at Royal Oaks. The golf staff would like to thank the members for your continued support and participation in all our wonderful events throughout our spring season.

The golf course has continued to thrive as our temperatures have increased to prime growing conditions. For both the Spring Member-Guest and Club Championship, the course was received extremely well by the participants and played a perfect balance of challenging and fair.

Construction is underway for the starter building located on the right-hand side of the cart path on the way to number one tee. During this time, please help us avoid congestion by using number nine to access the back end of the range. This major improvement to the golf operation is scheduled to be completed as the golf course re-opens from the closure and will streamline the process of providing your group with the needed supplies.

Pace of play has seen an improvement with the implementation of our new policy. The biggest issue the professional staff has observed is a delay in between holes nine and ten. The Turn is designed to be a quick stop to pick up food and drinks that were already ordered. Please call The Turn as your group completes hole eight and order your favorite food or

drink before teeing off on the ninth hole. This minute change to your routine will have a profound impact on your group’s pace of play and ensure a smooth transition from the front nine to the back nine.

Please remember to visit the website for upcoming events around the Club and upcoming MGA and WGA tournaments.

We look forward to seeing you around the Club!

Golf Swing Technology

Like many other areas of the world, technology in the golf industry is developing at an incredible pace. The introduction of new ways to analyze the golf swing as well as club and ball dynamics allows us all to gain a much greater understanding of why the ball moves the way it does as a result of a particular golf swing.

The addition of the Performance Center in the coming months will allow us to deliver a deeper level of swing analysis than we have before. This in turn will allow you to gain a greater understanding of how to improve your golf game.

To date the instruction team has been able to analyze the WHAT of a player’s golf swing using two pieces of technology:

1. Video Analysis – we use an iPad to video the golf swing and play it back in slow motion to analyze the swing.

2. Trackman – the little orange box you may have seen on the ground behind a player when they hit balls. This is a radar-based device that measures the club and ball interaction and produces data around that for better understanding of the ball flight that is produced.

Both these technologies will continue to be used in the Performance Center, but we will be displaying the information on large TV screens so it will be much easier to see and understand.

Moving indoors allows us to introduce new technology to the membership that does not work well outdoors. This new technology will allow us to show the HOW of your golf swing.

Force Plates are a device that is embedded into the floor and the player stands on them when they hit a shot. It then produces data about how you interacted

with the ground to produce the movements we see on video and the club/ball interaction that produces the golf shot. If you tried to swing a club without standing on the ground, you would have a very hard time producing anything that resembles a golf swing. It is this ground interaction that is critical to producing movement.

Understanding how we use the ground to produce motion and club speed is invaluable to helping players better understand their movement patterns as well as how to effectively change them. We are excited to introduce this technology to you soon.

It was shared with me that some members are having a difficult time finding open lesson times on my calendar. Although my calendar gets busy from time to time and when looking online it may show that no lesson times area available, I will always work with you to find time for anyone looking for a lesson with me. If

you are ever unable to find a lesson time through the app or website, please email me and I will work with you to find a time that we can get together as soon as possible.

Powerhouse for Golf,/ Tennis/ Pickleball

There is an area of the body with a very important status in the movement industry. It has nicknames like “powerhouse” and “king of the swing” and it rhymes with Elvis. It’s the pelvis, of course, and golfers should take note.

The pelvis is important because it connects your legs to your spine and acts as the gatekeeper for energy to flow from lower body to upper body. Basically, the key movements of the pelvis bear the big responsibility to either assist or impede power transfer.

The movements of the pelvis either build up your speed and transfer it up the chain or become the log jam that slows the energy flow. In the golf swing this log jam displays as poor sequencing, limited club head speed and can contribute to low back issues. When the hips and lumbar spine remain stiff the golfer often moves out of posture and thus limits the full transfer of power.

Pelvic motions are subtle but powerful to move and manage forces. We know from sensor technology that the pelvis performs three moves: rotation, tilting and hiking. Because of the proximity between the spine and legs your pelvic movement capacity is mostly dictated by your hip and spine mobility.

And to fully describe pelvic movement we can view these elliptical bones as a bucket of water. When the front of the pelvis tilts down we are “pouring water out the front.” And when the pelvis tilts into a posterior position at impact, we are “pouring water out of the back of the bucket.” At that moment, our glutes and abdominals contract or shorten and the lumbar back flattens into flexion. At the impact position, the pelvis also stops rotating to then allow the transfer of energy to the trunk.

In today’s article Robert Scott, PGA demonstrates 3 great exercises you can practice to gain more strength and control of your pelvis for rotation and tilting. Please use medical advice if you currently experience low back pain as this is not meant to rehabilitate an injured back but intended to strengthen and thus prevent back issues.

Pelvic Tilting on Pad – Start by laying down face up with your trunk and head elevated on a pad. Bring the front of the hips closer to your lower ribs to flatten the lower back and brace the glutes while keeping your

feet on the floor. This is like “pouring water out of the back” for posterior tilting. Then squeeze your lower back and tilt the tailbone back to the floor. This is like “pouring water out of the front” for anterior tilting. Repeat slowly while recruiting as much abdominal, low back and hips muscles as you can.

1/2 Kneeling Pelvic Tilts & Loading – Start in a halfkneeling position with one knee on a pad and the other leg in front bent to 90 degrees. Tilt the pelvis of the kneeling side hip back and forth a few times. Hold the pelvis under or in the posterior position to load the hip as used at impact. Now attempt to check your loading by lifting the other leg off the ground quickly as a test. Reposition yourself and repeat to improve your posterior tilt for good hip loading.

Pelvic Rotation or Rolling from Quadruped – While in an all-fours position, extend one leg straight and maintain neutral spine. Begin rolling the pelvis down and back up as far as you can so that you feel the stretch on the inner and outer hip. Maintain straight arms, level shoulders and head. When doing the pelvic rotation/rolling you will be also rotating the spine as we do in the downswing.

Mastery of these pelvic movements and mobility through hips and spine will add more power and many more years of enjoyment to your game. With modern golfers harnessing more power through equipment and instruction it becomes even more important to make sure your powerhouse can handle that power.
