T’S mid summer and, despite the fact it’s pissing with rain today, we are in the middle of a month of British sports fever. At Silverstone a rather grumpy young Dutchman drives round and round in circles pursued by a rather jolly young Brit and an older rather unhappy multiple world champion who both insist they will catch the Dutchman who has won every race this year once they get a few new upgrades on their car (dream on boys). Meanwhile at Wimbledon with occasional breaks for rain and strawberries lots of tough gals with unpronounceable East European names fire balls at each other while in the boys corner Djokovic (the unvaccinated Serbian whose name we have learnt to pronounce) looks to be cruising to another title. Meanwhile, England are probably heading for another defeat in the worlds third most boring game (I’m talking to you Golf and Formula One). The only interesting moment came when a Just Stop Oil protester ran onto the pitch let of his orange paint bomb and was then politely carried off by the wicketkeeper.
We take no responsibility for the veracity of the information herein
But pay no attention to these shenanigans because next door in the land of soft cheese the real action is under way and as usual it’s a corker. Fuelled only by fizzy drinks and energy bars 160 cyclists are racing 200kms every day at sometimes at over 40 mph all round France uphill and downhill for 3 weeks. It’s a pretty unbelievable feat of endurance and thanks to a bevy of cameramen on the back of motorbikes you can follow all the action in close up. I know when you actually watch bike racing, i.e. the Tour of Britain, from the side of the road it is pretty uninspiring. Hang around for an hour waiting – loads of police motorbikes go past – the cycle race goes past at 30mph it takes maybe 10 seconds – a hundred support vehicles drive past – you go home. But watch it unfold over 3 weeks on the telly and it is fantastic. The tactics of the 22 teams of eight riders each is like a complicated chess game. The downhills and sprints are dangerous and thrilling the mountain accents painful and nail biting and the scenery is stunning. The beginning of this year’s race in the Basque country was extraordinary. Identical British twins the Yates brothers (for many years the bridesmaids but never the bride) rode away from the field came home first and second. As I write this a young Dane and an even younger Slovenian are grappling for dominance on The Grand Colombier a 17 kilometre, steep mountain road in the Jura.

However, one or two other things have come up during my extended Tour de France, 3 week, afternoon, couch surfing extravaganza. As the Tour is on ITV 4 it means every quarter of an hour we get the adverts and at this time in the afternoon these are mostly for animal charities of one kind or another and also for charity lotteries. Who knew there were so many charity lotteries? RBL Poppy, Age UK, National Autistic Society, World Animal Protection, Fire Fighters, Oxfam, Melanoma UK etc. etc. I am well aware from standing in the queue at SPAR that people are pretty keen on the big ones – Euro Millions, National Lottery, Thunderball etc. and
although I never buy a ticket I do sometimes idly wonder what life might be like if I won EuroMillions. With that in mind I thought I might check the odds, just in case. The odds on me winning the jackpot are… wait for it… 1 in 139 million. National Lottery 1 in 45 million.
A web site called Save the Student helpfully tells me that by comparison: The chances of becoming an Astronaut are 1 in 12 million. Struck by lightning 1 in 1 million. Becoming an Olympic Athlete 1 in 500 thousand. Repaying one’s student loan 1 in 6.
So with all this in mind I am delighted to announce the Broad Sheep Lottery and I am going to give it a sporty feel by linking it to next years Tour De France. I think it’s high time I entered this famous race. Despite the fact I am twice as old as the oldest entrant I intend to work hard on getting into tip top shape. For the whole of this next year I will only use my electric motor on the way back from the shops and I will try and stick to 12.5 % wines.
You lot send me £10 each for a ticket. If I win next years Tour I will share my winnings (Euros 500,000) 50/50 with the winning ticket. There are 176 riders in the Tour and I am not quite clear on how you calculate odds but I figure I have a 1 in 176 chance of winning and compared to 1 in 139 million that’s no contest.

Somebody is calling to ask if I could use some birch bark... 4 tons of it…. Wha? I struggle for the name of someone up near Welshpool who deals in niche forestry products. But before I can supply his name the dream caller has hung up. I’m in a welter of anxiety now. Then a postman knocks with a package containing a block of wood which I have to sign for. I flounder up to the surface world again, I shake my head and scrape the hair out of my eyes. Water gurgles in my ears. Am I now awake? What does all this mean? Since I’m having the usual trouble with the blank white page maybe the lump of wood is a writer’s block? Should I therefore start a log book? .... take leaves out of someone else’s book, borrowed from a branch library? Dreams can be based on sad puns; and then I remember an article I was reading the night before about native Americans writing on birch bark, and children too before digital media stole their birthright, and paper is after all made of wood, including these pages. Those jumbled thoughts probably started this dawn chaos, but then more coherent thoughts arrived..... about introverted indoor art sampling the great outdoors, open air music, Magritte and the difference between words and the thing itself.
If someone wrote poetry on the white trunks of a local birch grove, how would that be? My partner says this is an insult to the tree or at least an insult to the way we think about trees, to our lying Arcadian mind-set. It would snap me out of my idyll, my wilderness dream. Could anyone ever come up with anything good enough to justify dislocating the non-verbal experience of walking through a wood?
Perhaps if you found The Wandering Spectre’s song, by anon, a whispering immortal voice articulated by the breeze, incised unadvertised on the trunk of a tree, how would that be?
“Wae’s me! wae’s me! The acorn’s not yet Fallen from the tree, That’s to grow the wood, That’s to make the cradle, That’s to rock the bairn, That’s to grow the man That’s to speak the words That’s to lay me”
It would have to be that good.
Or it might be the words of Simon Armitage carved for all time or at least a woefully long posterity into the granite rocks by the side of the Pennine Way. How arrogant is that? You’ve climbed all the way up there to have a fresh-air, unmade, wordless, wilderness experience
Simon Armitage poem
How about a roadside farm sign with “BewAre the JaBBerWock, mY zOn!” daubed on a piece of battered plywood in dripping bituminous paint or as I have seen somewhere truly forgettable, twee little aphorettes on laminated cards on low-hanging branches in a woodland glade: “Less is more” “Save the unicorns” “Believe in your Selfie”. How about something more meaty? “Do not bite at the bait of pleasure until you know there is no hook beneath it.” (Thomas Jefferson).
- nothing but the sky and the hills - and there’s this urban dilettante wittering on. A blot on the mental landscape as large as a satanic mill. His selfie with God? He’s definitely not the person to speak the words to lay my ghost. There are lines by “local author” Henry Vaughan on hinged planks hidden in signposts near where I live, but that is discrete and you don’t have to see, let alone read the words. As usual Shakespeare was ahead of us. In As you like it Orlando decks the trees with stuttering poems to his beloved Rosalind. Touchstone says “Truly, the tree yields bad fruit”. Jaques: “I pray you, mar no more trees with writing love-songs in their barks”.If it was a secret which you might just stumble upon while walking the dog, or you had a tip-off from a child, or you came across a poem in a bottle, a gargoyle carved into the bole of a tree, site-specific, no catalogue number, off the beaten track, would that be acceptable?
I bet you’d hate to hear canned music broadcast through the woods - but how about an oboe, the metamorphosed voice of Syrinx, Ovid’s willowy Arcadian nymphet, wailing in the wind, transcribed by Britten, she who, scantily clad and cornered at the river’s edge turned herself into a reed rather than be raped by Pan. Drastic solution! Now she cries her plaintive song from the river’s edge, and in the impenetrable and bosky grove. She lights the touch-paper of lust and calls the unwary to be mired in the reed-beds, to flounder and drown in the madness of desire, would that be OK, to hear those Arcadian Blues? That spectral voice in the wind?
Compare these possibilities with the sculptures exiled from their air-conditioned, linen-suited galleries to pose
and shiver outdoors in sculpture parks, diminished in scale, in the dark and the rain, competing vainly with the effortless grandeur of the trees, the lakes and the limitless skies? Culture? Nature?
G.K.Chesterton: “The Greeks couldn’t see the trees for the Dryads”. A Dryad is a tree spirit and the Greeks deployed an assortment of nearly naked nymphs and lusty pantheistic imagery to animate the world while we now spout listless scientific explanations, and evoke the neutered spirits of electricity, genetics and evolution. Is it any more useful to veil or explain nature with Quarks than the equally invisible Dryads?
The Aborigine can’t see the landscape for the dreamtime. Kapitalists can’t see the landscape for the mineral riches. Words and ideas, Classical imagery, Romanticism, nostalgia, and Darwinian theory mist over the slow, fine detail of immediate sensory experience and most of the land is covered in human marks anyway, but for that very reason I don’t want high art ideas and selfies in my face when I’m here and now in a wild place, which at least reminds me of where my being evolved and is where I can best attempt to recalibrate my cultured self to that opposite half of me: my original birthright, my natural mind.
Originally written in lawyers wig deliquescent ink on plantable Himalayan pink onion and wildflower seed torn-edge hand-made paper. Turns into a meadow in spring. £20 a sheet.

‘Tis the season for blockbusters and this summer’s two biggies are both latest episodes of venerable franchises with some surprising plot similarities. The first features 80 year-old Harrison Ford’s suitably world-weary archaeologist chasing all over the world for one half of Archimedes’ ancient mechanism, the titular Dial, that can apparently cause fissures in time. In this he’s sort-of aided by an untrustworthy Phoebe Waller-Bridger (t.v’s FLEABAG) playing the daughter of an old colleague (Toby Jones) who is sort-of in it for the money, both of them up again a mad ex-Nazi scientist, (a creepy Mads Mikklesen) who wants to combine both halves to create a world that Hitler dreamt of, but with him in charge. Masterful CGI manages to convincingly de-age Ford during the extensive first act and as you’d expect there’s a plethora of swashbuckling set pieces, some amusing nods to the previous films and a pleasing conclusion.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: DEAD RECKONING, PART ONE (12A)
This latest and longest (and longest titled!) of Tom Cruise’s world-saving exploits also involves him and his regular cohort (an ever-more portly Ving Rhames and ever twitchier Simon Pegg) searching for two halves of something that could destroy mankind if it gets into the wrong hands, namely an interlocking key. The wrong hands are those of cyber terrorist Gabriel (Esai Morales) aided by an ultra violent white widow (Vanessa Kirby) both of them competing with Hayley Mills’ master – mistress? – thief. Rebecca Ferguson also reprises her role as MI6 agent Ilsa Faust from MI’s ROGUE NATION and FALLOUT and between them we get a series of ever-more frantic, if almost implausible chases including, as in DIAL OF DESTINY, a nail-biting battle atop a speeding train. Director/co-writer Christopher McQuarrie’s third turn at the helm proves that he understands what audiences want from the BOURNE, BOND and MI oeuvres and delivers it with exactly the right amount of tension, gravitas and confidence.

IT says something of the clear presence of the wide Welsh Marches that this deeply rooted C16th pub should be called England’s Gate when it’s at least twenty miles east of the modern border. Since he arrived in Herefordshire thirty-five years ago, Mr Pernickety has been aware that the inhabitants of that area, although they won’t say so, are generally a great deal more Celtic than Anglo-Saxon, and the influence of the Welsh lingered as far as Worcester long after King Offa had built his dyke. The tensions this creates in the borderland between the mouth of the Dee and the Severn Estuary is written about with great perception and humour by Mike Parker in his new book All the Wide Border, which Mr P enthusiastically applauds.
England’s Gate Inn is a picturesque, sprawling timber framed hostelry set on a prominent road junction. It must have been serving drovers and travellers on their way to Gloucester, and the local farming folk for centuries. The gossip, bragging and shameless calumny of a thousand deceased boozers seem still to seep out of the ancient beamery and the much worn flagstones on the floor.
It has a somewhat wobbly history, even within memory. When Mr Pernickety first went to lean on the bar there, some three decades ago, seeking colourful low-lifes with which to people the novels he was writing, it was overseen by a landlord of bogus grandness called Tony S….., a purveyor of bullshit on an epic scale. He’d been given the pub by his wealthy parents who were aware of their progeny’s volatile and unreliable nature; they hoped that the inn would always provide him with a roof over his head and an income from selling beer. By that stage, in his late fifties, he was enthusiastically insulting most of his punters while boring them with the saga of all the money he’d lost in the Lloyds insurance market. He’d let the business decline so far that the beer would change monthly to more and more obscure and distant breweries who would still give him credit, and the supply of electricity, disconnected by the MEB, was provided by a rackety generator in the back, fuelled by red diesel, with which, for a while, he also used to pay his only employee. In the end, his own much abused body got the better of him and that haphazard era for the pub ended.
Mr P continued to enjoy its simple pleasures for a while, witnessing the burning of a vast beam over the big open fire, which luckily failed to destroy the building, and seeing it replaced with large log hauled from the River Lugg by the infamous local Rat-Catcher. He even recalls winning a karaoke competition there, with the prize of a free dinner, at least two decades ago.
Mr P hadn’t been there since, until last week, when he revisited it for the first time with his Lovely Companion, to
have a look at the place again and, while there to review it for the readers of the Woolly Organ.
He arrived as always with an open mind, unbiased by nostalgia, prepared to tell the ugly truth if necessary. It was early on a Friday evening; the carpark was full, the bar crowded. He was delighted to see the place still functioning as a proper country pub. The tables, all of honest pine and construction, were already filling up, As he guzzled pint of Butty Bach, Mr P found that not a lot had changed in the bar since we was last there, which pleased him. When he and the LC were shown to a nice little table in a corner by a window, they were pleased to see a clearly presented menu of just enough variety and good solid choices. The LC, always a sucker for Tex/ Mex food after a long sojourn in California, had a bowl of Nachos with Little Hereford Cheese, which pleased her with their crispiness and the piquancy of the salsa. Mr P had a bowl of Creamy Garlic Chestnut Mushrooms, which actually tasted like real mushrooms. So far, they agreed, so good. Looking around, Mr P saw none of the things that usually annoy him in pretentious pubs serving food, helped by a complete absence of music, unneeded above the warm murmur of pub conversation.
Mr P felt he needed a good shot of protein and ordered a steak. There was an 8oz rump on offer at £15.65 with an extra option of a pepper sauce. The menu informed him that all the meat was supplied by Mark Hurds of Weobley, which was encouraging. He asked for and was served a genuinely rare steak - a good, tender, succulent piece of beef, served with Stowford Press Cider Battered Onion Rings and a bowl of excellent, ungreasy chips. The LC meanwhile was eating a Gratin of Hake and Salmon in a Cheese and Leek Sauce, deliciously full of flavour. There is clearly a more than competent chef in at the England’s Gate Inn. The merlot Mr P drank was good and fresh, the service polite and charming. With a Lemon Roulade, ice cream and strawberries to end with, Mr Pernickety was delighted that he was able to declare this one-time old haunt of his a thoroughly good place to meet and eat, by any of his own exacting standards.

SCIENTISTS who study climate change are in the habit of warning that even a one degree C change in a century is a very big deal. That has certainly been their message over the last two or three decades.
We in the British Isles have also tended to believe that the most dramatic effects of global heating will be felt thousands of miles away, maybe on low lying islands, such as Tuvalu, in the Pacific Ocean.
So, it is a real shock to read, without much warning, that sea water temperatures around the UK and Ireland have jumped this year by up to 4 degrees C above average. That is not just a guestimate. It carries the authoritative stamp of the Met Office.
And a team From Bangor University have added helpful context regarding exceptional warmth around our shores. “Marine heat waves”, they have said, “are classified as prolonged periods of anomalously high sea surface temperature”, when compared to the long-term average for the time of year.
Writing a few weeks ago, they stated “…thanks to measurements made by satellites orbiting the earth, we know that, in some areas around the UK, surface water temperatures are 4 to 5 degrees C above normal for midJune.”
“So what?” you may say, “Won’t that just mean more enjoyment for sea swimmers, as they frolic in almost Mediterranean warmth around our shores?”
As a veteran killjoy and merchant of doom, I prefer to look at the downsides of such a dramatic apparent change in our climate. What about the impact on fisheries, for instance? In my quest for evidence, I didn’t have to look too far.
Over in the States, a very helpful scientist call Chris Free had already done most of the analysis for me! Now Chris Free is clearly a brilliant person, not least because he’s been thinking along the same lines as me!
He’s also been working with top-flight climate scientists, at the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and at Rutgers University in New Jersey.
What Chris Free and these other brainy people have done is to correlate sea temperatures with the productivity of fisheries, over many years and in a wide variety of places around the world. They have found that, while fish catches in some areas have risen with higher sea temperatures, in most cases catches have gone down as the seas have got warmer.
But get this! Some regions, says Free, “have been hit especially hard.” And he zeroes in on our patch of northern Europe. As seas have warmed, he says, the North Sea which has large commercial fisheries, and the seas of east Asia, which support some of the fastestgrowing human populations, have experienced the loss
of up to a third of their fish.
He reports that the North Sea, with large fisheries for species like Atlantic cod, haddock, and herring, has experienced a 35% loss in sustainable catch potential in less than a hundred years.
That has put me in mind of the great Grand Banks fisheries collapse off the Maritime Provinces of Canada in the 1980s and 90s. When I mentioned this to my friend Kathleen in Ontario, she retorted at once, “But that was caused by over-fishing!”
Not to be deflected, I quickly began to sift through more information from my hot US source. After a bit of flannelling and a glance at the review of worldwide fishery collapses by Chris Free, I countered as follows…
“Areas,” I said, “with a history of overfishing, such as Atlantic cod in the Irish and North Seas, were among the most vulnerable.” I wish I spoke so cogently all the time! (Thanks for letting me crib from your work Chris! I will buy you a beer next time I pass by the Rutgers campus in New Jersey!)
But why and how will more warmth in the sea hit the fish? On this point, it’s the scientists at Bangor University who come to my aid. They point out that, “…those stratified seas on the continental shelf around Britain and Ireland are some of the most biologically productive on the planet.”
“They have long been an important area for fishing cod, haddock, mackerel and other species.” Those fish eat smaller fish and crustaceans which in turn feed on plankton. And, to cut a long story short, the plankton are badly disrupted and depleted by the higher temperatures! Or, as a brief headline by the Bangor University team puts it, “Fish may go hungry!”
OK! Thank goodness for the academic boffins of Bangor and Rutgers! What they’re hinting at, in brief, is, “Get down to the fish and chip shop quickly, before a collapse in fish stocks sends prices rocketing, or, worse still, sees the whole fish and chip industry go under!”

SHADOW WORK, COUNSELLING & EXPERIENTIAL PSYCHOTHERAPEUTIC PROCESS Facilitated shadow work is a type of embodied psychotherapy rooted in depth psychology. I work in longer sessions, typically 5-hours. These deep-dive one-to- one sessions allow a shame free space to develop within which to identify, explore and transform those habitual, ingrained or unconscious patterns, beliefs or behaviours that trap us and hold us back from living full and joyful lives. This work holds the potential for deep personal growth, and deep healing and is the place to dive real deep into difficulty and challenge, shame or guilt, your grief, your fear or rage. The holding I offer you is both sensitive and strong, and you are invited to bring anything you wish to our work together. Find out more about shadow work and schedule a free 20-minute consultation at: www.inner-truth.co.uk - Alasdair Kirk - 07792 405 660
