Free inside this issue is a 16 page guide to all the help you may need at some time or another, either now or in the future.

This community directory is a Healthier Sheringham Partnership project, which collates this information and mirrors the community connectors page and interactive map on the NNDC website (this should always have the latest information as it can be amended via the community connectors page at NNDC).

The directory is split into 2 sections:

• Practical support that can help prevent a crisis by keeping well and independent

• Information about activities and societies to keep everyone connected and active in Sheringham, both as a participant or as a volunteer. It is easy to take from the centre pages of this magazine.

If you lose it you will find it permanently on our website www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

From the Broads to the Greek Islands for Local Writer

The latest mystery thriller from former TV and radio reporter Phil, writing as PN Johnson is a far cry from the early children's books he wrote about a teddy bear on the Broads Phil wrote The Little Blue Boat and the Secret of the Broads, which was produced as a play and performed in local theatres ten years ago

Since then, the former Radio Norfolk, BBC Look East and Anglia TV journalist, has turned to adult thrillers His first book "Killer in the Crowd" came out last March and was a Finalist in the 2022 Page Turner Awards.

Now his new book, "Run to the Blue" by PN Johnson, published on April 14th, is a fast-moving thriller set in the world of TV news in London and the Greek Islands It's been described by critics as "A Perfect Summer Read" Phil has dedicated the book to all of his former Radio and TV colleagues

The story revolves around TV reporter Tess Anderson Phil told us - It was supposed to be the best day of her career, the day when she was the hero, the reporter whose story put a deadly gangster behind bars But as crime boss Ken Lean is sentenced, ace reporter Tess Anderson instead finds herself in the headlines: her husband is exposed as having an affair with a top government minister, and Tess herself faces death threats from the Lean crime family

With her life collapsing around her, Tess runs to her friend’s villa on the Greek island of Paxos, but soon finds she’s been tracked down by killers and spies. Her only hope of escape is a mysterious, glamorous, and somehow familiar American yachtsman Can Tess stay alive long enough to see her pursuers behind bars? Who can she trust as her enemies close in? And what is the secret that her husband and his lover are so keen to ensure remains buried?

Run to the Blue by PN Johnson is published by Burning Chair Publishing London

burningchairpublishing.com/product/run-to-the-blue

As for Able Sea Bear Teddy and The Little Blue Boat, Phil assures us he's still out there patrolling the Broads looking after the birds and animals, and he may appear in another children's story in the future.

Sustainability Saturday

11th March 2023

This was the fourth meeting in the new series of Sustainability Saturdays at the Quaker Meeting House, Sheringham Dr John Hopkins, a former government advisor, gave us a talk on Nature Based Solutions; that is restoring nature, not just for its own sake, but also to benefit people It as an idea promoted first by the UN and then by the UK Government and has been adopted by many local authorities, NGOs, landowners, and private companies It includes benefits as diverse as carbon storage, flood protection, air purification and noise reduction Often a wood, wetland or other habitat, can inexpensively provide many of these services at the same time The Riverlands Project on the River Bure, rewilding at Wild Ken Hill and plans to create wetlands to protect the river Wensum from polluted runoff, are a few examples of this approach in Norfolk Gardeners too can make a difference by reducing paved surfaces, planting trees, shrubs and pollinator friendly plants, as well as doing less digging to conserve soil carbon and biodiversity (a welcome excuse for some)

The next Sustainable Saturday is 15th April, the Saturday after Easter, from 10 30am for 11 am, at the Quaker Meeting House, next to 14 Cremer St, Sheringham NR26 8DL, when there will be the speaker will be Beau Pearson from the Anglian Water Sustainability Team Co-ordinator.

On Tuesday 7 March, after an excellent lunch, Tim Groves, a retired primary school teacher, gave a fascinating talk entitled ‘The Development and Growth of Sheringham as a Seaside Resort’.

Tim started by passing round some interesting artefacts, stressing the enjoyment and significance of ‘hands-on’ history One of the objects, a 19th century corn measure, belonged to one of his ancestors After a brief talk about his family’s history, and encouraging members to investigate their own families’ ancestry, Tim spoke about the Sheringham Museum, of which he is a director

Next, Tim asserted that the development of Sheringham from a small fishing and farming community to a thriving seaside resort was the result of three factors: the Industrial Revolution; the impact of the Upcher family from 1812; and, most important, the arrival of the railway in 1887

The final part of Tim’s talk included the presentation of many pictures of old Sheringham, for example, of the fishing community and of Upper

A Note from the edi

Spring has sprung! The evenings are lighter a somehow things feel better, even if the weathe inclement at times

Easter is upon us, closely followed with the celebration of the Coronation of King Charles and a new Carolean era, the official name of this new age was confirmed by Prime Minister Liz Truss after Queen Elizabeth II's death Saturday 6th May is Coronation Day, so start planning your celebrations, Union Jacks and paper crowns at the ready! This will be most people’s first, and perhaps, only experience of a new monarch’s coronation, so make it memorable

Beach Party Outreach Packs Sheringham Church

Lighthouse Community Church in Sheringham was packed with children and young people at the end of half term week as the annual BeachLife indoor beach party got underway Around 140 children, along with many of their parents were there during the afternoon, for a time of beach games, challenges, crafts and ice cream For many, the highlight was the huge inflatable “Whack- a-mole” game

The theme of the afternoon was Thankfulness, and Methodist minister Sharon Thraves reminded the children why being thankful is so important, while two leaders competed with two of the children in compiling and

eating a sandwich with a bizarre combination of fillings!

The evening session was aimed at teenagers, with more games, challenges and ice cream, following the eight litres of ice cream consumed that afternoon! Connor Winston shared his thoughts about how having a thankful heart can help to combat anxiety and contribute to a more fulfilling life

Peter Skivington, who leads the BeachLife organising team, said “It was great to see Lighthouse packed with children and young people coming together and having a great time It’s clear that we were meeting a need for such an event at the end of the winter half term ”

Jonathan Veira at Sheringham Salvation Army

Our special guest at The Salvation Army, Cremer Street, Sheringham on Saturday 13th May at 7 30pm (the week after the Coronation) is the internationally renowned singer, Jonathan Veira

In “An Audience with Jonathan Veira”, Jonathan will use his voice and his skills as a musician on the piano and guitar, in a range of styles from Popular to Classical, together with his talents as a comedian and most of all communicator

Jonathan regularly broadcasts on BBC radio and television and has recorded numerous CDs and television programs in many genres including light entertainment and religious broadcasting, particularly with Songs of Praise Tracks from his CDs on the Elevation recording label are often featured on radio programmes across the globe

After a concert in Northern Ireland, a member of the audience said: “Jonathan Veira is the best one-man show I have ever seen, and no, I'm not one of his relatives!

And Phillip R Buttall of the Plymouth Evening Herald wrote: " Jonathan Veira, singer and pianist, who kept a packed audience absolutely spellbound for over 2 hours with a fascinating mix of humour, anecdote and, of course, superb music. There was Gershwin, A Donizetti aria, a Billy Joel number, gospel, country & western, blues, standards like 'Mona Lisa', 'My Funny Valentine' and much more besides, a veritable pot pourri which, on paper, would have seemed totally ill-suited in juxtaposition

However, whilst Jonathan is a true Jack-of-all-trades, he is an unsurpassed master of them all, subtly changing his delivery from one genre to the next, allowing the programme to unfold seamlessly, yet still maintaining an almost impromptu feel to the whole show"

Tickets are available now on Eventbrite (search for Jonathan Veira Live) at £12 each

Grenfell and The Building Safety Act 2022

-

How will this affect landlords?

The Building Safety Act 2022 is a significant piece of legislation that was introduced with the aim of improving the safety of buildings in the United Kingdom The act applies to buildings which are at least 11 meters in height or five storeys from the ground and was implemented following the Grenfell Tower tragedy, where 72 people lost their lives due to a fire in a high-rise residential building

The act introduces a number of new measures to ensure that buildings in the UK are designed, constructed, and maintained to a high level of safety These measures include the creation of a new building safety regulator, a new regulatory framework for buildings, and a new system of building safety certificates

Landlords will be considered dutyholders under the new Act and will have a responsibility for ensuring the safety of their buildings This means that landlords will need to take steps to identify and manage any risks related to the safety of their buildings, and to take action to address any concerns.

The Building Safety Act 2022 contains several key provisions that landlords should be aware of:

• Building Safety Regulator: The Act establishes the Building Safety Regulator (‘BSR’), which will oversee the safety of high-rise residential buildings The Regulator will publish guidelines

and regulations that landlords must comply with to ensure the safety of their buildings Landlords should work with the Building Safety Regulator to ensure compliance with the Act and to address any concerns or issues that may arise.

• Building Safety Certificate: Landlords of high-rise residential buildings will be required to obtain a building safety certificate The certificate will indicate that the building meets the necessary safety standards To obtain the certificate, landlords must provide evidence of regular safety inspections and checks Landlords should therefore keep records of all safety inspections and checks, as well as any actions taken to address any concerns

• Enforcement Powers: The Building Safety Regulator will have enforcement powers to take action against landlords who fail to comply with the Act This could include fines, prosecution, or even imprisonment for serious breaches of the Act

• Fire Safety Measures: The Act requires all high-rise residential buildings to be fitted with sprinkler systems and other fire safety measures Landlords should ensure that their buildings comply with the new fire safety measures required by the Act and should conduct a fire risk assessment of their buildings to identify any potential hazards and risks

• Serve Notices: Landlords will be required to serve notices to demonstrate that they qualify for protection under the act

• By October 2023, all existing occupied high-rise buildings must have been registered and the BSR will become the regulatory authority for all high-rise residential buildings.

• April 2024, the BSR will be able to enforce Building Regulation Certificates.

Overall, the Building Safety Act 2022 is an important piece of legislation that aims to improve the safety of high-rise residential buildings in the UK While there have been concerns about the cost of implementing these measures, the government has argued that the cost of failing to act could be much higher

North Norfolk Railway Receives The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service

Volunteers at the North Norfolk Railway, which runs magnificently restored steam and heritage diesel trains between Sheringham and Holt, were this week awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service This is the highest award a local voluntary group can receive in the UK and is equivalent to an MBE

The railway operates along 5½ miles of restored track from Sheringham to Weybourne and Holt with almost all the tasks necessary to run the trains being carried out by a team of over 500 dedicated volunteers The line is one of the county’s most popular tourist attractions, welcoming around 165,000 passengers per annum with steam trains running on most days from April to October

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service recognises outstanding work by local volunteer groups to benefit their communities It was created in 2002 to celebrate The Queen’s Golden Jubilee

The North Norfolk Railway was one of 244 local charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to receive the prestigious award

The ceremony, which was postponed from last year, with the list announced in June at Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee Weekend, due to the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, took place at Sheringham Station on 23rd March and saw Deputy Lieutenant of Norfolk, Adel MacNicol present the crystal award Representatives of the line’s 500 volunteers joined dignitaries at Sheringham for the ceremony, and then travelled aboard a special steam-hauled train to Holt and back

Hugh Harkett, Managing Director, said ‘We are extremely proud to receive this Award, our volunteers really are the life blood of the Railway and we are continually thankful for their dedication and support.

The North Norfolk Railway is a not-forprofit enterprise, so the

support of volunteers is really crucial to our survival and we are delighted that the fantastic contribution they make has been officially celebrated in this way. The ceremony is a great boost ahead of our main season, which begins on 1st April ”

Two volunteers from the line will also be invited to attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May 2023 along with other recipients of the Award.

The Railway is set to have another busy year with steam and heritage diesel trains running almost every day between April and October, alongside a busy schedule of dining train services and special events

North Norfolk Community Transport Celebrates After Receiving Motability Funding

North Norfolk Community Transport (NNCT) is celebrating after receiving a grant from Motability the Charity to expand its Wheelchair Accessible Car service The new funding, totalling £148,561, will mean NNCT can support even more disabled people and people with reduced mobility to access transport so they can get to medical appointments or visit the people and places they choose

The rural nature of North Norfolk means that affordable, accessible transport is in short supply. NNCT aims to give people choice and control over where they can go, leading to improved health and wellbeing and social connections This door-to-door service is now supported by Motability who have funded the purchase of an extra vehicle, as well as the running costs of the vehicle and a driver for the next three years

Commenting on the project, Executive Lead

DO YOU NEED HELP?

If you have a living crisis, we can help you with

of NNCT, Jane Bishop said: “We are so lucky to have received this grant and it will enable us to make a commitment to support people over a sustained period of time. Although there is already a high demand for transport to medical appointments, this means we can increase our capacity so that people can get to other places This may be to attend a job interview or visit an educational institution, to attend support groups and societies, or simply wanting to see friends and family This is of particular importance for people who live alone, whether elderly people who have lost partners or young people isolated by the need to supply childcare in the home We already know, from the multiple requests we receive daily, that there is a high demand for this kind of support for disabled people in North Norfolk ”

• Emergency Food Parcels

• Accessing Local Agencies

“This has given us our freedom back and we see it as an essential service ”

“I cannot speak highly enough of the service that is provided. It is an invaluable local wheelchair accessible service providing a lifeline to people in need, this includes the family and friends of those who are in a wheelchair ”

Lisa Jones, director at Motability, said: “We’re delighted to award NNCT with this grant to support the expansion of their community transport service so that more people in North Norfolk have greater access to travel The grant comes from our portfolio of grant programmes specifically set up for charities and organisations like NNCT who are already doing so much to help disabled people access the transport they need We encourage any organisation that may be eligible for funding to have a look and apply ”

Never too old to learn!

Every day, there is always something new to learn Although Age Concern North Norfolk runs a day centre, which provides care for several clients living with dementia and other cognitive issues, we find out more and more about their backgrounds through some of the simple activities we organise

A visit from small animals such as guinea pigs from Cuddly Cavies starts conversations about pets they had when they were young or brings out their caring skills as they cuddle and stroke them.

Sometimes we make small cakes, a reminder for them that cooking can be fun and eating the outcome also enjoyable

Many of our clients do not have the capacity to prepare meals when they get home so we provide a safe environment to utilise long-lost skills

George and GP Fairtrade for Sheringham

The Fairtrade for Sheringham group held a very successful ‘Big Brew’ Coffee Morning early in March to raise awareness of the Fairtrade movement and to raise funds for ‘Transform Trade’ (formerly Traidcraft Exchange) This they did by enabling £400 to be remitted to ‘Transform Trade’ This organisation assists producers of goods to work in a sustainable way which also helps them to be aware of climate change challenges, feed their families and send their children to school. The event was supported by Councillors Madeleine Ashcroft & Sue Brisbane of Sheringham Town Council (pictured) plus Central Co-op and Tesco

We are all encouraged to look for the Fairtrade logo when doing our shopping, thus ensuring producers receive a fair price for their goods Alternatively, St Andrew’s Methodist Church holds small stocks of some Fairtrade products such as teabags, coffee, chocolate, peanut butter, honey etc Contact Jean Parton (01263) 821600 jeanparton24@gmail com for more information

We are now working in partnership with Paston College and offered two Health and Social Care students a placement Each student has to complete 100 hours of work and generate a portfolio of evidence to meet their competences for the level of the course they have chosen

Guinea Pigs

Our two Senior Support Workers have taken on a mentoring role with each student and we have enrolled them on our online training to cover the more Health and Safety aspects of the requirements of their course Age Concern North Norfolk enjoys the students coming to the centre, as do the older people, as it brings ‘new eyes’ into what we do and reinforces for our own staff what a wonderful learning environment we have

Top Tips with Toll Barn Vets

- Exotic Birds (Part

Many birds in captivity are often fed inappropriate diets (excluding those with very specialised diets, such as lorikeets who must be fed bird nectar), with many of the more commonly kept species fed on seed based diets

Seed based diets are the fatty fast foods of the bird world Of course they love them but that doesn’t necessarily mean they ar diet Such foods often lack the vi and minerals that birds need to k their body and immune system strong and health, leading to subsequent Health issues including secondary fatty liver, metabolic bone disease, egg binding and respiratory issues, a healthy diet will hopefully mean you have a healthy bird

Even seed based diets dusted with minerals don’t solve the problem because the majority of seed eating birds will shell the seeds they receive and selectively feed on their favourites such as sunflowers or millet. This leads to minimal supplementation and discarding of mineral covered shells leaving the healthier pellets and their vital nutrients in them being left behind

Supplementing their water is one way to combat deficiencies but the unhealthy diet

2) - Feeding

remains, so we would always advise switching your birds to a pellet-based diet where appropriate Many birds raised on seeds can be fussy, as previously mentioned, these are the fast foods of the bird world, so it can take time and perseverance to change the habits of a lifetime with these fast food addicts

There are many online resources that can help with this process, but recommendations vary from 50-70% pellets that contain a homogenous mix of everything a bird needs to stay healthy and reduces selective feeding Birds should also be offered plenty of fresh veg and where appropriate fruit with the seed making up only a small portion of their diet as treats, or given during training as a reward

Did you know you can make some of your seeds even healthier by allowing them to sprout? Sprouting them leads to a change in their nutritional contents and can be a great intermediate step for our fussy eaters

Suitable fruits and vegetables include dark leafy greens (broccoli, spinach, kale, dandelion

leaves), carrot, green beans, sugar snap peas, peppers, papaya, mango, melon, pomegranate

Visit a reputable website online for a full bird safe list.

Foods to avoid include dairy products, tea, coffee, chocolate, avocado and salty or sugary foods Some of these foods are quite toxic to birds and what seems like a treat at the time can lead to serious health implications, so always check before you feed

Also remember to make it fun! Birds need to be kept busy with interesting things to do or they can engage in self destructive behaviours such as chewing or feather plucking Start with setting your bird a challenge that is easy such as putting a piece of paper over the top of the food bowl Once they have mastered this you can make it a bit more difficult – wrap favourite food items partially in paper then move them to different places for more of a challenge. Place items inside cardboard toilet paper inserts or boxes Once your bird has mastered this, you can increase the degree of difficulty by buying toys that you can hide things in It is important not to make things too difficult to begin with or your bird will become discouraged and give up

Winter Notes from the Commons

Our winter through December, January and February consisted of a cycle of a few cold days followed by milder days We had periods of spectacular hoar frosts but very little sleet or snow Mark Clements and I walked the Commons most days and our highlights are as follows

The Waxwings which turned up at the end of November were still present (01 Dec) and increased to 10 (02 Dec) They were last seen the following day (03 Dec) A rare visitor was found by Mark on Pill-box Hill (04 Dec) It was a Dartford Warbler, a nonmigratory warbler in the UK although it will do local migrations in the winter from its breeding areas A Kingfisher was noted by the main pond (06 Dec) and a ‘wintering’ Chiffchaff was seen, while a Water Rail was heard calling from the north-east corner marsh

Two Chiffchaffs were observed (07 Dec) eating

Willow Aphids

These aphids are the largest in the UK and are not normally eaten by birds due to a toxicity built up from feeding on willow sap It is possible that the ‘wintering’ Chiffchaffs have not encountered these aphids before and were trying them for the first time Redwings were noted flying over west with one flock of 56 seen A Snipe and a Woodcock were flushed from the central marsh (09 Dec) which coincided with a drop in the temperature and a Firecrest was found in the wooded area The first period of hoar frost occurred, and the Dartford Warbler was re-found at the northern end of the Central Marsh (13 Dec) just as a Kingfisher flew overhead The Dartford Warbler was still present the following day (14 Dec) and two Teal flew north With the cooler weather a cold-weather movement of birds was noted with Mark counting 91 Lapwing and

200 Redwing during the day (15 Dec) Another cold weather visitor, the Jack Snipe was flushed by John Furse and the next day (16 Dec) Mark flushed two Jack Snipe and two Common Snipe Redwing (150) and Fieldfare (13) plus 230 Pink-footed Geese also passed over that day. A Redshank was at the main pond (17 Dec) and again the cold weather had brought the wader to the Common Pete Geary spotted the Kingfisher at the main pond (19 Dec) and a Red Kite was noted (20 Dec) A flock of 15 Lesser Redpolls had a Mealy Redpoll with them (21 Dec) and a Firecrest was present in the wet wood to the south-west of the Common During the morning Mark also spotted a Little Egret heading east For the next four days the Kingfisher was at the main pond and the Dartford Warbler was noted to have returned to the Pill-box area (26 Dec) A flock of 12 Siskin and a Firecrest was present in the wet wood area (31 Dec) The Dartford Warbler remained mainly in the Pill-box area for the whole month of January and was periodically seen moving around A Woodcock was flushed (01 Jan) and two Chiffchaffs were noted plus a flock of 26 Siskin

Another Mealy Redpoll (possibly two) were found in a flock of 23 Lesser Redpolls by Mark (04 Jan) A Red Kite headed east (06 Jan) and 86 Pinkfooted Geese headed west Another Red Kite was seen by Pete Geary (08 Dec) as well as two Chiffchaffs

A Mediterranean Gull headed south (11 Jan) and the first Buff-tailed Bumblebee was seen (12 Jan) Dave Billham reported a sighting of a Barn Owl (13 Jan) and the Firecrest was still present (17 Jan) A male Reed Bunting turned up (18 Jan) and a female Teal headed south 25 Jan) A pair of Sparrowhawks was displaying (27 Jan), and a Woodcock and Reed Bunting were also seen Some 67

Magpies flying south-east as singles, pairs and occasionally in threes were counted towards dusk heading to roost (28 Jan). A Cetti’s Warbler was present in the north-east corner marsh (29 Jan) and two large flocks of Jackdaws (90 and 40) passed over north-west A Little Egret was reported by Dave Billham flying over (02 Feb) and Mark observed two Red Kites heading west and flocks of 30 Siskins, 15 Lesser Redpolls and over 320 Pinkfooted Geese (03 Feb) The Dartford Warbler was seen again around the Pill-box by Pete Geary (06 Feb) and the Firecrest was still present in the south-west corner (09 Feb). Mark spotted the Dartford Warbler in some Gorse north of the pond (15 Feb) and the first Primrose was flowering The first Adder of the year was out (19 Feb) and also two Red Kites drifted south The following day (20 Feb) Mark found four Adders basking and two Firecrests. The first Adders out are male, and they are usually found basking for around a month or more before the females emerge A recorder run overnight (22-23 Feb) picked up overflying Coot, Bewick’s Swan and Golden Plover Two Egyptian Geese headed east and about 20 Redwing were present in the trees (23 Feb) A Woodcock and two Snipe were also flushed from the central marsh Hairy-footed Flower Bees and a Small Tortoiseshell butterfly were noted (26 Feb) and the Dartford Warbler was again observed north of the pond alongside a Stonechat (28 Feb). The contractors were onsite for the end of February when they cut the grasslands and heathlands All the work went well and there were no casualties among the reptiles or amphibians which is always a concern during mild winter weather

Sheringham Helps

Healthier Sheringham held its first community event on the 18th February at the Lighthouse.

Over 60 organisations attended and nearly 300 people came through the door to see what was available in Sheringham Cllr Liz Withington said the event was part of Healthier Sheringham which is about bringing the community together to understand what resources we have in the town available to support us in our health and wellbeing, preventing crisis and ill health and making us more resilient as a community. The Sheringham Helps event showed what incredible resources we do have already and helped people to collaborate to make our community support stronger and bridge the gaps where we need further opportunities to improve the quality of life for our residents in what is a very special town. “The morning was a network opportunity for all the towns organisations to come together and Sir Norman Lamb came along to talk to people about the importance of people being connected to their community and nature for their mental health and wellbeing.”

Paula Prince who had helped lead on this event as a lead on Healthier Sheringham said: “Sheringham Helps was an important opportunity for people to network and learn from each other It was most surprising the number of groups and organisations who were not aware of each other Already there are collaborations starting which can only be beneficial for us as a community”

Anneliese Maerz Age Concern North Norfolk Healthier Sheringham Steering Group said:

“Events such as Sheringham Helps are so important in helping the community to understand what is available locally to support them and it helps professionals and volunteers

up from this successful day The Community Directory will be printed shortly with 300 connections to local organisations and groups within the town and local area Thanks are due to funding from Tesco Bags for Help and Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community, Sheringham Community Support Sheringham in Bloom and the Reef Leisure Centre and the support of Sheringham Independent There are plans for an Outdoor physical activity network to build alongside the North Norfolk Walking Festival organised in September by North Norfolk Outdoor Fitness who have been on the Steering group of Healthier Sheringham since it was initiated A Creative arts network is also underway ”

Paula Prince is also pleased to report that: “Links have already been formed with Merchants Place in Cromer to collaborate together on a Volunteer Hub to encourage people to volunteer and help out in the community Mental health support is also being discussed and ideas are being developed for local support sessions within the town ”

in social and activity groups to understand where help may be available for people they engage with This helps to take the strain of carers and families looking after their loved ones but also means people can continue to be independent and stay within their community for longer ”

Cllr Withington reported after the event that: “Actions are already coming together to follow

It is hoped to repeat this event next year for the community but also to build on the networking opportunity for our town groups in the interim. Thanks have to be given to the Lighthouse Church who gave their venue free of charge, ran the community café and soft play as well as the ThreadBear Childrens’ charity shop in order to support the community coming together

A Sad Afternoon for Weybourne WI

The village hall was bustling with activity and chatter on Wednesday afternoon, 1st March, when 37 members gathered for the final meeting of Weybourne WI

Celia Howe, President, welcomed everyone to the meeting and we began by singing Jerusalem A short business meeting followed Jean Benham was awarded the ‘Member of the Year ’ trophy and Sue Webber received the competition trophy and shield. Celia Howe, Heather Dakin, Maggie Parker and Pat King were all presented with bouquets, in recognition of their long service as committee members Sue Lee read a poem which she had written describing her first impressions of Weybourne WI.

Our speaker for the afternoon was Mike Ayden, Treasurer of the charity Cromer Community and Hospital Friends, he was accompanied by his assistant Margaret Mike spoke about the

Cromer Community and Hospital Friends became a registered charity in 1971 and has received many generous donations and bequests since then, 100% of which go entirely towards funding services at the hospital.

Celia Howe gave the vote of thanks and presented Mike with a cheque for £560 00, the proceeds of our fund raising during the past 18 months She requested that this should be donated to the MacMillan Cancer Unit at Cromer

The afternoon concluded with members enjoying tea and delicious cakes The raffle was drawn before everyone departed.

history of Cromer Hospital from when the first hospital opened in 1866, right through to the present day. 2023 marks 147 years of continuous service from a hospital in Cromer

As no officers were appointed at the AGM, which was held in February, Weybourne WI is to be suspended and there will be no further meetings

Editor ’s Recipe

As spring gets underway, my tastebuds start to crave something fresher and lighter in my bakes This recipe hits the right note With the zing of lime teamed with coconut, it is fruity and light. It can be made in a 2lb loaf tin or a deep 7” springform tin and is the all-in-one method, so is very easy and quick to do

The cake will keep in an airtight tin for

Soup for the Soul

several days, if you can leave it that long!

Lime & Coconut Cake

Ingredients

180g self-raising flour

180g softened butter

180g caster sugar

3 large eggs

250g condensed milk

2 heaped tablespoons desiccated coconut zest and juice of 2 limes

icing sugar

Method

Preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan/Gas 4 Grease and line a 2lb loaf tin or 7” deep round cake tin.

Keep aside 1 lime

There is something so comforting about a fresh bowl of homemade soup Yes, you can buy ‘fresh’ soups at the supermarket, but they still contain preservatives and additives to maintain their shelf life, and your body needs neither. Tucking in to a beautiful, vibrant soup full of delicious, fresh vegetables and herbs, maybe accompanied by some steaming hot bread fresh out of the oven; there can be no finer supper than that The great thing about this recipe is that you can ring the changes with the available veg that you have; courgette, butternut squash, celeriac, sweet potatoes, chard, sweetcorn, asparagus, cabbage, cauliflower, all or any of these would blend into this beautifully I have done another version of this soup before, using mint, which is just as delicious, but dill is a herb we seldom use and is often neglected; it goes so well with the potatoes, and is such a lovely fresh change I keep soya cream in my fridge all the time, as you cannot tell the difference between it and regular cream, and it keeps for ages, making it a very handy thing to have. White miso paste adds a lovely umami flavour to the soup, and finishes it off nicely, plus is full of

Put all the other ingredients in a large mixing bowl and beat together until well combined Pour the mixture into your cake tin and bake for about an hour Be sure to check the cake after 40 minutes as this cake can burn easily, if it looks like it is getting too dark in colour, cover with a piece of foil for the remaining time. After 50mins to an hour, test with a skewer to see if the cake is cooked, then take out and leave in the tin to cool for a few minutes before leaving on a cooling rack until cold

With the second lime, grate the zest and keep aside. Juice the lime then add icing sugar to the juice and mix until you have a soft dropping consistency Drizzle the icing over the cold cake and sprinkle with the zest Enjoy

goodness for your gut Why not assign one day of the week as ‘soup day’, and have fun exploring all the different versions of delicious soups there are? Just add some crusty bread and a hunk of cheese and you have a beautiful, nutritious supper

Creamy Vegetable and Dill Soup

1 white onion, finely chopped

1 leek, finely chopped

2 sticks celery, chopped

8 or 10 new potatoes, chopped into small chunks

4 carrots, chopped into small chunks

1 fennel bulb, chopped into small chunks

A mugful of frozen peas, defrosted

A mugful frozen, chopped green beans, defrosted

Tsp bouillon powder, or vegetable stock cube

A generous teaspoon dried dill

Tsp white miso paste, dissolved in a little hot water

½ small carton of soya cream, or dairy cream

Seasoning

Start by gently frying all the vegetables, except the frozen ones, in a little olive oil in a deep saucepan, on a low heat with the lid on, being careful not to let the vegetables catch. Boil the kettle, and after about 10 minutes, pour in enough boiling water to cover the veg, plus about another inch Pop in your bouillon powder or veg stock cube and the dried dill, and stir to combine, and then put the lid back on and allow to simmer until the veg are cooked through Add the frozen defrosted veg and simmer for a further 5 minutes, and then take off the heat and stir in the miso paste. Finally, add the cream and stir well, then garnish with fresh dill if desired and serve

Langham Dome Museum

The beautiful sunshine that we’ve had lately has focused our minds on the fact that Opening Day is right around the corner!

Our first day for the 2023 Season will be Thursday 6th April, 10 am till 4pm.

In March our magnificent replica Spitfire will be mounted on its plinth and pilot Dickie will once again be keeping watch over the Dome!

We have 6 new volunteers on board this year. Having had a new recruiting poster out this winter it was well received, and we had replies from several interesting candidates They will be joining our newly appointed Assistant Manager, Scott Eltringham, at the Dome for an Induction Course on how our volunteers interact with our visitors

Last year we were over the moon to have received The TripAdvisor Award 2022, making us one of the top 10 % of attractions in the world! A big part of this was down to our wonderful group of volunteers, who help

present the unique history of the Dome to our visitors You only have to check out our 5-star reviews to see the public’s comments!

Scott is spending time looking for new lines for the Gift Shop, to keep things as tempting as possible! He is also doing a great job with our social media output If you’re on Facebook and Instagram, you may like to follow his hugely interesting posts about the stories that surrounded the Dome in WW2 RAF Langham was part of Coastal Command and has an abundance of heroic and sometimes tragic tales to tell

We’ve been fundraising like crazy for a muchneeded new Projector System for the Dome One of our Trustees, Roland Goodison is cycling the C2C, 146 miles across the country, to help raise money for the new system The films are the HEART of our museum The very purpose of the Dome was to project moving images of enemy planes onto its curved surfaces to enable trainee gunners to hone their skills Those films are still used by our visitors today, but the projectors are also used to show

our intriguing films narrated by Stephen Fry, which explain the history of, and the stories of Langham Dome, the airfield, and its connection to Langham Village

We’ve done well so far, but still need help to reach our target If you would like to help with our fund raising, you can donate via the QR Code above or of course, at the Dome itself from 6th April.

We can’t wait to see you all soon, both new and returning visitors!

When does a Lasting Power of Attorney take effect?

If you have been asked to act as an attorney for someone you may wonder when it will come into effect, especially if the Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) was made when your friend or relative was in good health

Lasting Power of Attorney (after October 2007)

Lasting powers of attorney (LPAs) in English law were created under the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and came into effect on 1 October 2007 They replaced the previous system of Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA) which had been in place since 1986

LPAs have the option to allow a donor (the person making the LPA) to register the LPA with immediate effect, whereas an EPA could only be registered by an attorney once the donor started to lose mental capacity

Lasting powers of attorney were introduced to allow people to appoint attorneys in respect of both their financial decisions and their healthcare decisions Separate documents are required to appoint each type of attorney.

LPA – Property and Financial Affairs

When a donor creates a lasting power of attorney for property and financial decisions, they need to decide whether the document could be used while they still have capacity (i.e. as soon as the lasting power of attorney is registered) or only in the event that they lose their mental capacity

If the donor chooses to give power to an attorney with immediate effect, the attorney can only deal with the donor ’s financial affairs when they are instructed to do so, for as long as the donor continues to have mental capacity If the donor prefers to manage their financial affairs until they lose their mental capacity, then the attorney will not be able to act for them until such time

Unlike the enduring power of attorney, most lasting powers of attorney are registered in advance to ensure they are available and ready to use in the event of loss of capacity, as the registration process is rather lengthy. Registration of a lasting power of attorney with The Office of the Public Guardian can take up to 20 weeks

The Office of the Public Guardian is a government body that, within the framework of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, polices the activities of deputies, attorneys and guardians who act to protect the interests of those who lack mental capacity

LPA - Health and Welfare

A lasting power of attorney for health and welfare decisions follows the same registration process as for property and financial affairs However, the key difference is that a healthcare lasting power of attorney may only be used if the donor no longer has mental capacity There

is no option for the donor to delegate their healthcare decision making sooner

Important considerations

If you have been appointed as an attorney for someone, it is important to remember that the LPA is the donor ’s document, not yours It is the donor who makes the LPA and who determines how it can be used and, in some cases, when it will be effective An attorney cannot override the donor ’s decisions in this regard.

How can we help?

LPAs are important documents, make sure you understand the nature and effect of an LPA before starting to act

Anita was left without words when colleagues and Prof Nancy Fontaine, Chief Nurse, took her by surprise and handed her the Silver Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) Award

The CNO Awards have been developed to reward the significant and outstanding contribution made by nurses and midwives in England and their exceptional contribution to practice.

Anita has worked in Cromer since 1995 and has been a Matron for the past 13 years “I never thought I’d have won such as prestigious award; it makes me feel so proud I love doing my job as every day presents new challenges and I can count on the help of great colleagues,” she said “During these years in Cromer I’ve been involved in many projects and saw the hospital developing But, most importantly, the feedback from patients is excellent They really appreciate the care they receive within our environment that, due to its relatively small size, is calm and helps developing interpersonal relationships quicker ”

Anita was nominated for the award by Julie Keeling, Senior Divisional Matron for Surgery The nomination said: “Anita is both committed and dedicated to patients and works tirelessly to ensure they receive the very best standards of care In September 2021, a new cancer unit opened at Cromer Hospital, the North Norfolk Macmillan Centre. Anita has been instrumental in getting the project off the ground, along with the support of many colleagues She worked with the Friends of Cromer Hospital to fundraise in her own time, outside of work In December 2021, we were asked to support the national vaccine booster campaign and under Anita’s direction and leadership the nursing team delivered up to 1,300 vaccines within three weeks. She cancelled her leave during this period to support her colleagues and ensure the campaign ran smoothly and efficiently ”

“Further Postage Dues” was the title of the display presented to members at the March meeting - in itself, not that inspiring! However, Peter Watts’ infectious enthusiasm for his subject led to a most interesting and enjoyable evening He has a huge collection and shared with us the history of GB Postage Dues (are these labels or stamps?) from when they started to be used in 1914, until they were replaced by

yellow labels or a card through the door instructing the recipient to go to the Post Office and pay to claim the item

Other countries used Postage Dues from the mid to late 19th century He also showed us examples from countries with names from A to Z, excluding only X Peter ’s particular fascination lies with untangling the stories of

Blakeney wildlife that we all take for granted Blakeney harbour provides a sheltered environment comprising part of two national nature reserves famous for its bird life and one of the country’s most important seal colonies Poppy is owned and administered by The North Norfolk Charitable Trust We are able to accommodate a maximum weight, wheelchairs and passengers inclusive, of 365kg Please ensure that your cohort is equal to or below this weight.

Please get in touch and provide us with all the relevant information so we can look to arrange a suitable trip for you

We live in an age of technological advancements in Medical Sciences and lasers are a modern solution to a variety of skin concerns

Here at the Coltishall Clinic we are very fortunate to work with a full range of cutting edge lasers that address most common skin concerns We have more lasers and experience of using these lasers than a lot of Harley Street clinics and we continue to invest in modern technology and education

Here is a lowdown of our lasers available right on your doorstep!

What can laser skin rejuvenation do for me?

Laser skin rejuvenation is a cosmetic procedure that uses concentrated beams of light to improve the appearance of the skin The specific benefits of laser skin rejuvenation can vary depending on the type of laser used and the individual patient's skin concerns, but some potential benefits include:

01603 736487

● Reducing wrinkles and fine lines: Laser skin rejuvenation can stimulate collagen production, which can help smooth out wrinkles and fine lines.

● Improving skin texture and tone: By removing the outer layer of skin, laser skin rejuvenation can help reduce the appearance of scars, sun damage, and uneven skin tone

● Tightening loose skin: Some laser treatments can help tighten loose skin by stimulating collagen production and promoting skin cell turnover

● Minimizing pores: Laser skin rejuvenation can help minimize the appearance of large pores by removing the outer layer of skin and promoting collagen production

● Treating acne scars: Laser treatments can help reduce the appearance of acne scars by promoting collagen production and smoothing out the texture of the skin

It's important to note that laser skin rejuvenation is a cosmetic procedure and may not be suitable for everyone. It's important to consult with a qualified healthcare professional to determine if laser skin rejuvenation is right for you and to discuss any potential risks or side effects

What laser treatments are popular at the coltishall clinic?

Hair removal, tattoo removal, moles, lumps, skin tags, xanthelasma, blemishes, broken veins, scars, pigmentation, age and liver spots, birthmarks, uneven texture etc to name a few

We provide solutions for veins and cosmetic surgery also Log on to the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk to see a full range of laser treatments and conditions we treat or call 01603 736487 to book your appointment

313 Mate in 18 moves; White only moves his King

2. Rf3++ Ke4 3. Re3++ Kd4

4 Re4++ Kd5 5 Rd4++ Kc5 6 Rd5++ Kc6

7 Rc5++ Kb6 8 Rc6++ Kb7 9 Rb6++ Ka7

10 Rb7++ Ka8 11 Ra7++ Kb8 12 Ra8 mate

Very easy (for one thing, the only moves to force Black’s replies), but readers will have had fun “kicking the black K upstairs”

In No 313, Black might say “Yes, you can promote your advanced Pawn and mate quickly, but just for fun I challenge you to do it moving just your King Actually, I calculate that you can do it in eighteen moves, by forcing me to capture your a-Pawn and then capturing mine to clear the a-file for a discovered mate from your Rook ”

This time, I offer a small prize for the first correct solution received by timed e-mail (lestershaw7@gmail com) or dropped through my front door (16 Lime Grove, Sheringham, NR26 8NX) So, friends, to your chessboards! Difficulty 2
