Inferno Canto I: Dante’s Midlife Crisis
“When I had journeyed half of our life’s way, I found myself within a shadowed forest, for I had lost the path that does not stray” (Inferno, Canto I). There is no greater way to begin our reflection than with Dante’s own words. In the beginning, Dante places himself as being lost in the dark woods. He is already referencing the Prophet Isaiah, “In the noontime of life I said, I must depart to the gates of Sheol” (Isaiah 38:10). It is with this reference that we find Dante in the noontime of his own life at the age of 35. In contemporary lingo, he is having a midlife crisis. He is physically lost, but symbolically he has lost his way from God. This distance from God for Dante is like being in darkness, lost, and afraid.
It is interesting that Dante chooses to begin his spiritual journey at the age of 35. It already implies that he has had life experience, he knows the world, and has some sense of self-knowledge that we do not have in our youth. So why here? Why at this point? I think it is because, in this stage of life, we begin to see the emptiness of life. We have been there and done that and like most who have gone through this crisis in their forties, one of the questions we ask is this: what is the meaning of it all? In our youth, we are often obsessed with trying to fulfill our ambitions and we rarely find time to ask what the true meaning of those ambitions are. The question of meaning is not a mathematical question with a straight answer. Rather, it begins with the darkness of ignorance which is why we find our pilgrim Dante lost.
Dante has “lost the path that does not stray,” he has lost his spiritual path of faith. Like most people today, we are catechized as children, receive confirmation, maybe attended Mass on Sundays in high school. But by the time many people reach college or enter the workforce, faith and religion are often forgotten. It is the same experience for Dante. He was a man of the world more obsessed with politics, poetry, and philosophy than with faith. Yet, his exile from Florence was a curse transformed into a blessing. The experience of exile leads Dante to see that what really matters is not which political party controls the government, but rather who controls your heart? Sin or grace?
From here, Dante encounters three terrifying beasts, a leopard, a lion, and a she-wolf. It is difficult to know the precise meaning of these beasts, but literary critics have suggested them to represent the sins of lust (leopard), pride (lion), and greed (she-wolf). They might even represent Dante’s own personal sins. These beasts block Dante’s own path and there seems to be no escape, but by an intervention from heaven, Dante meets the Roman poet, Virgil, author of the Aeneid. He helps Dante escape the beasts and guides him through this journey.
What I love about Virgil is the importance of having a guide. For Dante, the spiritual journey is not a journey in isolation. It is a pilgrimage walked with others. In fact, the only time Dante is ever alone in the whole poem is here in Canto I. For the rest of the epic, he will always be walking with someone along the way. Our American understanding of faith is so privatized and, in some ways, so personal that we have forgotten the role of the community in our faith journey. Today, everyone wants to walk their own faith life in isolation, but Dante teaches us that this method is a recipe for disaster. We need guides, but it cannot be just anyone, it needs to be someone like Virgil, a man of wisdom. He represents reason, antiquity, and virtue. If we try to guide ourselves, we will remain hopelessly lost. Virgil will be the man to help guide Dante through the depths of Hell.
But why Hell first? I think it is because the only way of finding the way up, we first have to go down. Professor Ralph Wood brilliantly states, “Dante must discover that life is damned before he can come up out of the cage.”1 He continues, “We will not truly know truth, goodness, and beauty until we know we have lost it.”2 The soldier has a better understanding of peace because he has experienced war. You learn the true value of light only when you know what real darkness is. Dante, in order to find his way to God, first has to see and understand what life is

without God. We have to see those points of crisis, not as a curse, but maybe as a real turning point of grace. It is in our lowest point, that God may even challenge us, like Dante, to go further down from the Lost Woods into Hell. On our own, it is impossible, but it was God who sent Virgil to Dante, God also will send guides to us. It is not a journey of guarantees, but one that calls us to trust and hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel. As Winston Churchill famously said, “If you’re going through hell, keep going.”

Mary’s Making Moves: Elementary School Expands its Programming
St. Mary’s Elementary School has always sought to be responsive to the evolving needs of its students and community at large since its opening in 1926, while always keeping its mission at the center: integrating the truths and traditions of the Catholic faith into the lives of our students and celebrating the uniqueness of each individual by educating the whole child. Over the years, this has meant introducing new classes such as STREAM (science, technology, religion, engineering, art, and math); adopting new curricula such as Teachers College Reading and Writing Program; and of course constantly updating its facilities to maintain a bright and beautiful physical atmosphere, matched only by the joy and happiness which radiates from the teachers and administrators. This summer, again responding to the needs of its students and community, St. Mary’s Elementary will be making moves to expand its programming and update its facilities accordingly.
With the Middle School, grades 6 through 8, moving out of the Elementary School building and across the parking lot to Immaculata Hall, the Elementary School is already hard at work this summer to renovate and reconfigure its spaces. More classroom space means the Elementary School is able to open a new grade level for 2 year olds: Cherubs. Principal Theresa Kemp officially announced the School’s newest grade-level launch last week. “I am excited to open our doors to our youngest students by offering the Cherubs Program for all two-year-olds. This latest move by St. Mary’s creates the opportunity for parents to immerse their children in a nurturing learning environment that will present participants with an introduction to the Catholic faith, socialization, enriching experiences, and activities.” This groundbreaking addition to the school's already impressive offerings further affirms the administration's goal to provide excellence in education coupled with a support system beyond the classroom.
MARY’S MAKING
MOVE WITH US MOVES
While traditional classroom spaces are important for whole group instruction, it is equally important that students work collaboratively in groups in part so that their independence and leadership skills can grow from an early age. In order to reinforce this need, some of the newly vacated classroom spaces will become flexible learning spaces with creative resources to support literacy and math instruction. Additionally, PE classes and daily recess already do provide young students with the chance to be physically active and get fresh air during the school day, but the Elementary School also has plans to expand its indoor playroom into a more dedicated play space with equipment for climbing and building when it's not possible to get outdoors.
Two of the most dramatic updates in the renovations taking place this summer are the addition of a chapel as well as a total overhaul of the library. The former music classroom is set to be converted into the chapel out of a desire to give students more direct access to prayer in the presence of our Lord, again central to the School’s mission. Teachers will be able to regularly bring their classes to the chapel and be more ‘hands-on’ with their religion classes. The library, thanks to fundraising dollars from the Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Organization, will become a more flexible space with soft seating, updated technology, and a living wall. The library will serve as a central location again for teachers to bring their classes for independent study or group learning in addition to a gathering place for parent socials.
At St. Mary’s Elementary School, every student has the potential to excel and achieve greatness, from two years old and up. Make the move to St. Mary’s Elementary School and learn more about the incomparable Catholic education available by visiting the website at saintmaryses.org. Registration for September 2023 is rolling.
The demolition of the library is complete, and renovations are well underway.
Fr. Dominik confidently evaluated the color swatches and floor samples presented during a recent team meeting.
With four distinct programs, St. Mary’s is ready to pave the way for the next chapter of Catholic Education on Long Island. 2-K | 1-5 | 6-8 | 9-12

Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will not reject anyone who comes to me, because I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me. And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day.”
- From the Gospel of John 6:35-40
All gifts to the Catholic Ministries Appeal make a difference in the lives of those who are served by the Appeal.
Every Gift Counts!
A gift of $50 may help pay the gas for a Meals-On-Wheels van to deliver food for a day.
A gift of $75 from an emergency fund may help pay the electric bill for a family in need.
A gift of $100 may help a new mom in Catholic Charities Regina Maternity Community Case Management Program.
A gift of $250 may help subsidizes a home for an adult who is developmentally disabled.
A gift of $1,000 may help support a Seminarian’s education.
Because of you, every year we are able to serve more than 600,000 people in our Long Island Community. Catholic Charities and parish outreaches can maintain and grow their services to families struggling to meet the demands of higher costs for food, housing and utilities. Faith formation programs for our seminarians and lay leaders thrive so that they can fulfill their calling to lead the faithful of our community. Faith is inspired and kept alive for our youth so that they come to understand that their faith is a gift that should be passed on from generation to generation.

Draw Jesus in a boat on the lake talking to you and your family.
Jesus is standing in a boat at the edge of a large lake. He is talking to you and a crowd on the shore. You are sitting on a blanket with your mother’s picnic basket beside you. Jesus talks about sowing seed. You are like God’s seed. You grow in God’s way because you are baptized with the water of salvation and are given the nutrients that come from obeying God’s commandments.
Lord, tell me how to grow closer to your ways of goodness.

Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo

O Most Holy Trinity, Who deigned to raise Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo to the priesthood, and endowed him with precious gifts, especially that of a burning love for suffering and immolation, we humbly beseech You, if it be Your will, that he may be glorified on earth, and that we may obtain through his intercession the particular grace which we ask for with living faith. Amen.
