Editor’s Note
Eskandar Jahanbani Editor in Chief
Arriving back from the well-earned vacation has been quite refreshing for the ME Printer staff – something that we all looked forward to. It seems that business in Dubai is once again back on track. After a slow summer, graphic arts industry is once again buzzing with activity. Paper Arabia, the leading paper industry exhibition took place between 26 and 28 of September 2010 in Dubai. The leading paper suppliers from across the region and abroad, participated in the show. A healthy visitor turn out, once again proved that Dubai is a dynamic hub for a wide range of industries. Around 6000 industry experts and decision makers from Middle East and Africa as well as Europe visited the show. You can read the full post show report in this issue of ME Printer. Paper Arabia proved that paper industry in the Middle East is recession proof. However our major highlight in this issue is an interesting and elaborate report by Pira International about the Future of the Printing Industry in Middle East and North Africa. Pira International shared this report exclusively with ME Printer. Based on this study total printing revenues in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in 2009, reached $7.7 billion, and is expected to increase further to a total of over $11 billion by 2015. Also as a special offer, the readers of ME Printer magazine will receive 10 percent discount on purchasing the report. In addition, in this issue, we are including a comprehensive post show report on 17th Korea International Printing Machinery and Equipment Show (KIPES 2010) which took place from 8 to 11 September 2010 at the Korea International Exhibition Center. For those printers who were looking for state-of-the art Korean large format and narrow web presses, the exhibition could have been a perfect venue. As I mentioned earlier, we are back to offer you fresh insights about the industry so you will find a string other interesting news and views in this issue of ME Printer.
Based on a recent study by Pira International total printing revenues in the MENA region are expected to reach to a total of over $11 billion by 2015.
The Comprehensive Iran Print Industry Buyers’ Guide launched

The third edition of the leading Iranian graphic arts directory has more than 1200 pages and 11000 entries

The newly released Iran Print Industry Buyers’ Guide contains comprehensive list of business profiles of agents, manufacturers and suppliers of printing equipment and consumables. The book also includes the most up to date listings and detailed information on printers, prepress and postpress centers. The third edition of the guide contains exhaustive information on each printer’s or prepress house’s equipment and services including the number of printing units, prepress and finishing equipment. This is a unique and exclusive resource on the Iranian graphic arts industry.
Useful information such as contact details of Iranian banks abroad, trade associations, consultants, training centers, chambers of commerce and advertising agencies are also included. However what makes this guide unique is not the amount of entries but the details that have been added to each entry such as types of equipment and field of the expertise of each printer or graphic arts service provider. Digital printing centers take on larger parts of this directory comparing to the previous editions. This is clearly the signs of the times that points to the increasing growth of the digital printing industry in Iran.

UAE: Sharjah Advertising Invests in a Speedmaster
The company has diversified into areas such as advertising, branding, design and signage

Sharjah Advertising Company has announced that it has recently completed the installation of an all 06.09.2010 11:20 Seite 1 new 4-colour Heidelberg Speedmaster
SM 52. While buying a new kit during recession is a bold move, George Varghese the co-owner of the company decided to convert challenges to opportunities. “The deal to buy the machine was signed during 2008. However due to confusion in the market, I decided to delay the commissioning of the press. But ultimately I decided to install it. Heidelberg has always provided us with good support. In addition, Heidelberg’s presses are durable and have a very good resale value. So I was encouraged to go ahead with the new press,” commented Varghese. The company is already equipped with Heidelberg GTO 52-1, Heidelberg GTO 52-2, Polar Cutter 78 plus a range of digital and large format printing equipment. Varghese brothers were smart enough not to put all their eggs in one basket and from the very beginning they diversified in areas such as advertising, branding, design
and signage. However although the company managed to navigate troubled waters, according to George Varghese, there are still some serious challenges for graphic arts service providers. “Payment collection has become very difficult. Most customers do not pay on time, while we are committed to pay our suppliers on time,” added Varghese. “Since we did not concentrate only on offset printing we have been able not only to survive but also thrive.” The company, which was founded in Ajman by two brothers George and Paulson Varghese shifted to Sharjah in 2003. The company is currently known as Sharjah Advertising Company, while its signage unit is called Sharjah Neon LLC. The company offers a wide range of services including creative brand strategy, advertising, packaging design, web design, offset printing, signage, and so on. The company employs 70 people.

KSA: National Offset Printing Press Company Looks to Expand its Printing Capacity
Invests in a Heidelberg CTP Suprasetter 145 Platesetter to keep up with the latest developments in print technology
From left Tariq Al-Gharayri (Design Dep.), Ramzi Nasereddin and Roberto Dela Cruz(Digital Plates production)
National Offset Printing Press Company has announced that it has decided to buy Heidelberg’s CTP Suprasetter 145 Platesetter to keep up with the developments in this field, and to match the large web presses the company already owns. According to the company, its current investment in printing equipment includes Heidelberg’s Speedmaster 102 and Speedmaster CD 102, as well a web press from KBA. Speaking to ME Printer on this occasion, Saleh Al-Sanea , the General Manager at National Offset Printing Press Company said, “The latest machine prints plates for all sizes in outstanding quality.
Moreover, it prints automatically, and we will use it to print educational school books. At the moment, we have sufficient amounts of work that the machine can handle. However, there are future plans for developing and expanding our printing capacity to keep up with the growing demand on book printing.” The Suprasetter 145 for large format is based on well-proven technologies in the CTP range of products from Heidelberg. This includes, above all, the outstanding lasers from Heidelberg with their patented Intelligent Diode System. These models also feature production with excellent depth of focus, internal temperature stabilization and uniquely straightforward operation. The large-format platesetters also set new standards in their class with regard to quality, reliability, flexibility and user-convenience. Elaborating on their plans, Al-Sanea commented, “Our main focus is onhigh quality, which reflects on the standard of the books we produce. The new machine from Heidelberg will help us accomplish this. Moreover, it has a high speed of production in comparison to the traditional method of using film. We have a high level of consumption and it is continuously
increasing. Heidelberg’s Suprasetter will meet this high demand for the time being. National Offset Printing Press Company is one of the longestablished companies in KSA and one of the first to acquire both types of web machines in addition to the large format printers for sheet-fed prinitng press.” Al-Sanea further explained that National Offset Printing Press Company has had a special relationship with Heidelberg. “They have been providing excellent after-sales services, as well as high performance products that fulfill our ambitions in the long run. National Offset Printing Press Company is one of the oldest companies in the printing indust ry, if not the oldest. It was established in Riyadh in 1971. From the first day of establishment, the company set a strategy to raise the schoolbook’s standard to the highest levels of quality and design. The company has vowed to progress in printing standards, and observed all the required possibilities in order to reach this goal. Moreover, we have plans to add large format web presses to expand our production capacity, and to keep up with the latest developments in print technology,” concluded Al-Sanea.

UAE: One Step at a Time
How Abu Dhabi National Paper Mill became UAE’s largest tissue paper mill
Just ten years ago, in the year 2000, UAE’s first tissue paper mill was established. And two years later, it was commissioned to produce convertible tissue paper in jumbo rolls made from 100% virgin pulp. Today, it is the largest tissue paper mill in the United Arab Emirates. Abu Dhabi National Paper Mill LLC (ADNPM) is a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi National Industrial Projects Co. (ADNIP), a prominent private industrial investment group. The company was established with
an initial capacity of 22,000 tons per annum, and 100 percent capacity utilisation was achieved in a mere eight months of commissioning. At its peak, the Mill reached a record 127 percent of the designed capacity – in the year 2006. Covering an area of 60,000 sq m, the mill houses a pulp store, machine house, stock preparation facilities, tissue machines, de-inking plant, warehouse and offices. In addition to the existing Crescent Former Paper Tissue Machine, ADNPM installed a second machine in 2007, with higher capacity, to increase the overall production capacity. A De-inking Plant was also added to the set up thereby introducing the usage of recycled paper. Total capacity of the de-inking plant is 30,000 tons. Recycled paper usage within the Paper Mill production process helps save the environment by reducing pure pulp usage. ADNPM has also installed a water treatment plant whereby 40 percent to 60 percent of the waste water is treated and re-used rather than dumped into the sewerage. This helps the Paper Mill in not only reducing the energy consumption but also in being environmentally friendly. Today,
ADNPM produces on an average, around 70,000 tons of tissue paper per annum. In a short span of time, ADNPM has carved a niche for itself. The company is a prominent jumbo roll maker and the frontrunner brand in the GCC. The company produces a variety of tissue papers, from facial and toilet tissues to kitchen towels, serviettes, table napkins and industrial hand wipes – all in a wide range of colours and with approved dyes (EC-No 1907/2006) for its safe use. The company supplies not just to local and regional tissue paper converters, but also to overseas converters. ADNPM’s exports constitute up to 80 percent of its production. ADNPM acquired all the necessary quality, environment, health and safety certifications. These include ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004, OHSAS 18001:2007 and the coveted FSC SW-COC-002917, which ADNPM is proud of being the first to get in the Middle East. The Forest Stewardship Council Chain of Custody (FSC CoC) Certification guarantees that the wood fiber or pulp used in the Mill’s FSC certified products come from well-managed forests.
UAE: Xerox Spearheads the Shoe Box Campaign
ME Printer Oct 2010
The campaign reached out to construction workers
10
Xerox Emirates has announced the success of its latest employee engagement and responsible business CSR initiative, the Shoe Box Campaign, which was launched on August 2nd to reach out to construction workers. Xerox Emirates and its employees supplied ‘shoe boxes’ to over 250
workers to show their appreciation for the fundamental work they have done in the development of the new upcoming facility located in the International Media Production Zone. The Shoe Box campaign works on the simple concept of collecting daily-use everyday lifestyle items that we take for granted which are essentials for these steadfast workmen. A large number of workers in UAE experience unfavorable lifestyle conditions including living away from their families for long time; extreme weather conditions; as well as the challenges of an expat life, such as isolation, cultural and social pressures. “We wanted to recognise the labour force in the UAE who contribute so much to the growth of the cities in which we work, and thus to all of our tomorrows. It is time for us to stand up in recognition and do something, however small, to
acknowledge the favour. Their efforts are changing the skylines and our Shoe Box campaign appreciates the essential role that the construction teams play in building our foundation and infrastructure that allow us to grow and run our daily businesses.” commented Andrew Hurt, the General Manager for Xerox Emirates. “Our employees are one of the most significant building blocks for the success of Xerox Emirates, and the Shoe Box campaign engaged all our employees to unite together and achieve this memorable and fulfilling experience. We have embedded corporate social responsibility within our values and day to day operations. As a company that has grown and developed alongside the UAE, we have made it our mission to enhance and uplift our surrounding community, both internally and externally.”

UAE: Digital Printing is the Way Forward
Brian Filler, the Managing Director at Screen UK and Marketing Manager Tim Taylor from Screen Europe speak exclusively to ME Printer about the future of inkjet digital printing technologies
Brian Filler, Managing Director, Screen UK
ME Printer June 2009
Tim Taylor Marketing Manager Screen Europe
12
In May this year Atlas Media Communications, a subsidiary of Dubai-based Atlas Printing LLC, announced a partnership with Newspaper Direct Inc., a multichannel newspaper and magazine content distributor representing 1400+ publishers worldwide. According to the partnership agreement, Atlas Printing LLC was to start short-run printing of seven international newspaper titles, including the Daily Mail, Sunday Mail, and USA Today. The company went ahead and invested in new equipment, including Screen’s TruePress Jet 520 digital press. ME Printer recently caught up with Brian Filler, the Managing Director of Screen UK and Tim Taylor Marketing Manager for Screen Europe, to talk about the future possibilities of short-run newspaper printing and inkjet digital printing technologies. “I am here probably once or twice a year, essentially to visit Atlas Printing LLC, where we have installed our reel-to-reel inkjet digital press,” explained Filler. Four months after installation, Atlas Printing LLC has been progressing well with their short-run printing services. “We are particularly impressed by the professionalism by which Atlas Printing LLC approved and went ahead with the project,” said Filler. “They have recruited some very able staff, are running the machine at its optimum level and producing fantastic results. This is an installation we are extremely proud of.” When asked about whether a business model such as short-run newspaper printing services works in this region Filler said: “This type of business works here better than any other part of the world. Dubai is an international hub with many different nationalities living here and traveling through here. While they can read most newspapers
online, there is nothing to replace the experience of relaxing and reading your favorite newspaper in print and on the day of publication. And that is what Atlas Printing LLC has achieved for almost all their readership.” Short run printing is perfect for this type ‘remote-printing’ application, explains Filler. “While newspapers are printed conventionally in the country of origin, digital printing is ideal for printing just a small quantity of lots of different titles on-site and in-city. “The publisher doesn’t have the cost of mailing or exporting copies to its subscribers around the world which delays delivery. It makes more sense to adopt the short-run remote route. The smartest solution is to send the files to the city and print locally on the day of publication,” said Filler. Taylor added that due to the number of visitors coming to places such as Dubai, the hospitality and airline sectors are also perfect markets as travelers want to have the ability to read their local newspaper in hotels and on flights. Hotels can order specific quantities of different newspapers for delivery at the hotel on day of issue – it’s a great service for hotel guests. Plus, Atlas is printing over size tabloid newspapers in handy small format sizes which are easy to read on an airplane. During Ipex, Screen officially launched world’s first B2 duplex inkjet printing press. Filler is confident that the press will open new markets for printers everywhere including the Middle East. “The Truepress Jet SX was a crowd puller in Ipex and there are many applications for this press which makes it a unique product for offset as well as digital printers,” he said. On the Truepress Jet 520 Filler explained that one of the best features of the inkjet digital
Log on to www.meprinter.com for an online edition of our reports, articles, news and events
printing technology is its flexibility in producing various formats and ability to produce specialized versions for different applications. “We have quite a few orders in the pipeline, but we cannot elaborate on any of those at the moment. With our reel-to-reel inkjet digital press, printing presses can print children books, magazines, direct mail and so on. There are various opportunities to tap into using these presses. There is no doubt at all that the market is changing and that more and more colour pages are produced each year from digital devices. Conventional presses are producing less pages and that says something about changing market perceptions,” said Filler. Screen UK covers Middle East and African territories and Filler explained that around 35 to 40 percent of Screen UK’s sales are derived from Middle East alone. “This shows how important the market is for us,” he said. In our region Screen is perhaps well known for its CTP business more than inkjet. While so much attention is given to inkjet, does that mean CTP is a dying business? Taylor thinks otherwise: “CTP still is a profitable business for us. In 2009 we sold more CTP systems than 2008, although I have to admit that there are not much growth possibilities in CTP business and the market for this device is shrinking. On the other hand, inkjet has a great future. As you might be aware Screen is also seriously involved in chip manufacturing and OLED displays with the cooperation of DuPont. All the inventions in our inkjet technology are derived from our expertise in chip manufacturing and OLED research and development activities. On the other hand our experience and innovative solutions for graphic arts industry also contributes to our success in the display market,” he finished.

UAE: Spectrum Printing Press Eyes the Regional Digital Printing Market
Opens up a digital printing centre at Dubai World Trade Centre and invests in HP Latex technology
ME Printer June 2009
Eyeing the revolutionary growth of the sign and digital printing industry in UAE, Spectrum Printing Press has gone ahead and opened up shop at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC). The company, which already owns a digital printing centre at Dubai International Financial Market (DIFC), opened up the new office at DWTC to cash-in on the growing demand from clients for high quality digital print and graphic production in the region. The new digital printing centre opened at the DWTC is equipped with a HP Scitex LX 600 wide format printer and the HP DesignJet L25500. The HP Scitex LX 600 uses Latex inks for print jobs and is environmentally
14
friendly. It can deliver outdoor and indoor print jobs and helps attract environmentally conscious customers with HP Latex Inks and recyclable media. The HP DesignJet L25500 wide format printer meanwhile can produce outdoor signage with durability comparable to eco-solvent inks. It also helps presses achieve high-quality results that meet clients’ branding requirements for indoor signage applications, from exhibition graphics to interior decorations. Speaking to ME Printer about the new development, Ramzi Razian, the Managing Director of Spectrum Printing Press, explained, “Prior to opening up this new digital printing centre at DWTC, we assessed the local market for location retail, population, demand and the outlook of digital printing market in the region. Many customers rate digital printing services as photocopy services – that’s the real perception. However, if you go to countries like USA, or European countries the situation is different – there, the customers of digital printing services swear by the quality of the output.”
Raizan further went on to elaborate that Spectrum Printing Press is expanding in the region. “We believe in UAE and the digital printing technology and hence. We help customers with their layout, resizing, touchups, and so on. We are currently offering indoor, outdoor and environmental printing services. We are in the right place because this is where most exhibitions take place and most exhibitors are in need for large format print jobs,” claimed Raizan. Spectrum Printing Press’ new digital printing centre at DWTC also offers internet and Wi-Fi services and quick printing services. Today, the company claims to have over 36 employees working across its various facilities. “We have also opened a new branch in Abu Dhabi at the twofour54 free zone. We are also on schedule to launch a new web to print solution for Arabic print jobs. We are currently testing the compatibility of Arabic fonts before we officially launch the services onto the market. We aim at becoming the leader in digital printing presses in the region,” concluded Raizan.

A World Run by Robots and an Evolution of Knowledge
Dan Smith, Xerox’s General Manager for Integrated Marketing for the ME and Africa writes about how in 2020, virtually all information will be in digital form
ME Printer Oct 2010
Changes in how people and companies will work in the next ten years are the focus of a recent study conducted by researchers from the Xerox Innovation Group. The Knowledge Work 2020 project identifies leading trends that will affect knowledge workers in the future. Here’s a glimpse at those trends, organised around four components – technology, information, human and organisation.
16
Technology In 2020, people will literally be surrounded by thousands of computers. They will be embedded into almost anything (i.e. devices, furniture, buildings, clothes, people) – connected to the Internet – with intelligent, simple interfaces everywhere. They could cost as little as one cent at the low end, while a $1,000 computer will run at 100-GHz and processors will approach the computing capacity of the human brain. Computers will even understand some human expression through built-in face, expression, gesture and speech recognition. They’ll automate
simple workflow tasks and be able to make autonomous decisions – but most knowledge in intelligent agents will still be crafted by human experts. Information coming from people and networked devices will result in a larger information overload problem despite productivity tools that will give us unprecedented insight and control. Information In 2020, more information will be widely available – even free. Human conversations will easily span space and time, but much business-tobusiness information will continue to be unstructured. Virtually all information will be available in digital form with embedded features for trust and security, and use of paper will continue to decline for company-internal business processes. What we know will be captured in knowledge bases, and others in our network will be able to use it. To understand, believe and control the reasoning of automated agents, we’ll have to rely on sophisticated security and explanation technologies.
Human In 2020, knowledge work automation will follow the evolution of factory automation. Tasks that are of value, but are either routine or laborious, will be automated. On the other hand, work that is custom, needs significant commonsense, tacit, or contextual knowledge, or builds on human relationship skills, will continue to be done primarily by humans. However, even many of those jobs will be supported by intelligent tools, so increasingly novices and people with generic skills will be able to do them with minimal training. Unlike manufacturing, in the future it will be possible for many knowledge work jobs to be done anywhere by anybody. Organisation In 2020, most work will be done by small companies and independent workers spread across the globe. Large companies will consist of a small, stable core and a large “cloud” of independent, temporary, local, mobile employees and contractors. Most knowledge workers will work in distributed teams and will collaborate remotely in virtual environment.

As part of its policy to building a stronger platform for environmental responsibility, the Dubai-based Emirates Environmental Group has taken a step a forward by printing its latest corporate profile on Eural Premium, a 100 percent recycled,
coated paper from Arjowiggins. The high-quality coated paper features a high level of whiteness and brightness and boasts the best of both aesthetic and environmental features. Eural Premium is produced without the use of bleaching or chemical treatments, has a smooth natural feel and is available in 100, 115, 170 and 300-gsm. Speaking about the announcement, Arjowiggins’ Charles de James, the Sales and Marketing Director for Creative Papers Sales in MENA, said, “In this day and age there is no excuse not to use environmentallyfriendly products, including paper. All Arjowiggins’ recycled paper is of the highest quality, relatively inexpensive and FSC-certified. We urge all businesses to follow in EEG’s footsteps and go greener when it comes to paper.” Arjowiggins is the world’s largest manufacturer of creative and technical papers and offers several premium
FSC-certified paper ranges. Their product range includes Conqueror a 100 percent recycled version of the flagship brand, ‘Conqueror’, which is available in all the popular finished including Wove, Laid and CX 22 in sizes including A4, SRA2 and B1. The company also produces Opale a 100 percent and 50 percent Opale recycled paper, which the company claims is a “modern corporate solution with a professional fee” and is available in 100, 150 and 300gsm. EEG’s Chairperson, Habiba Al Marashi said, “As an organisation, we believe that by purchasing and actively using environmentally-friendly paper, we are not only saving natural resources, but are also motivating all members of the community to make the change to a greener way of life in whatever way they can.” Giffin Graphics has supplied and distributed Arjowiggins’ paper ranges across the UAE, Oman, Qatar and Bahrain for the last two decades.

IRAN: Tehran’s Print and Advertising Industry Gets a Boost as Two Related Exhibitions Are Held Under One Roof
ME Printer Oct 2010
The 17th International Printing and Packaging Machinery Exhibition, and the 7th Advertising and Marketing Exhibition take place simultaneously in Tehran, Iran
20
Print and advertising industry professionals were in for a treat as two exhibitions targeted at the print and advertising industry took place at Tehran’s Permanent Fairground between 12 and 16 September, 2010. The 17th International Printing and Packaging Machinery Exhibition and the 7th Advertising and Marketing Exhibition were conducted simultaneously in Tehran and drew a huge crowd from graphic arts as well as advertising industries. On the other hand as widely expected, the fourth round of Security Council sanctions on Iran, which is already in full swing, kept most of the European companies out of both the exhibitions. During the last decade, there has been a constant decrease in the number of foreign companies participating in industrial exhibitions in Iran. Last year, Turkish companies opted for a huge pavilion – but this time around, they almost completely ignored the exhibitions. On a brighter note however, Chinese companies and Iranian manufacturers almost entirely filled the gap. Chinese visitors were seen across all the exhibition halls. The absence of European companies did not discourage Iranian and some foreign visitors from visiting the show. Iranian producers and manufacturers, especially in the packaging sector, displayed a diverse range of products. Also some of the major European graphic arts manufacturers participated through their local agents at the events. In
total, 380 Iranian and 60 foreign printing companies put on display their latest offering in seven halls at Tehran International Permanent Fairground. When it comes to packaging Iranian producers and manufacturers are posing serious threat to foreign brands. However Chinese as usual are very active in this sector. Iranian manufacturers have learned valuable lessons in recent years and with continuous fine tuning are now offering advanced technology. Sepas introduced its flagship pad printing press, Tahvol Kala premiered its new shrink pack machine and Technoplate showcased its plate processor device. These manufacturers staged an impressive show during exhibition however Chinese manufacturers with similar products also launched their very own show of force. Aluminum Hezar Kerman, a major manufacturer of aluminum foils showed a wide range of its products. The company produces 400000 tons of aluminum foil per year. Choob and Kaghaz Mazandaran, a major manufacture of paper and board in Iran introduced its new product. The new paper’s brightness has been increased by 80 percent. The improved product caught the attention of organization responsible for printing of text books in Iran, which is using it for the production of text books. Three new Iranian companies specialised in IML labels participated
in the exhibition for the first time. All three companies, Nekoo Beheeneh Machine, Bana Electronic Pars and Petro Plastic launched their new IML products during the show. A major part of their machinery for production of IML is manufactured by Sanaye Plastic Iran. When it comes to consumables Iranian ink manufacturers have the upper hand. But for other supplies such as paper Iranian printers prefer foreign brands, a fact that Chinese, Korean and big European paper producers are quite aware. That’s why they always participate in Tehran’s’ exhibition with full force. Parallel to Tehran’s International Printing and Packaging Machinery Exhibition, 150 companies took part in Advertising and Marketing Exhibition which was also held in Tehran’s International Permanent Fairground. This exhibition, since its inception has always been a springboard for digital large format printing industry. This year’s edition of exhibition was no different with Chinese manufacturers and their agents having occupied most of the available exhibition space. Superwide Persia, Agfa’s agent for large format printers introduced an Anapurna wide format printer plus a range of Chinese printers, which proved to be crowed pullers. OTM, an Iranian supplier of large format printers, which assembles Metsa brand of printers in Iran, introduced an all new model equipped with Konica Minolta heads.

Middle East: New Print Titles Emerge
Notwithstanding the recent closures, many new print titles are being launched
In less than a year, many enthusiastic media companies have started adding new print titles on newsstands.
While 200 print titles were reportedly shutdown in the GCC region, in less than a year, many enthusiastic media companies have started adding new print titles on newsstands. An Abu Dhabi-based company is set to launch a daily sports newspaper called Sport 360°, published in collaboration with the capital’s media production zone twofour54. Steve McKenlay, the Editor of Sport 360°, said a website and mobile platforms would be part of the launch of the title but insisted there was “still a newspaper-reading culture” in the region. Meanwhile, plans for a free daily paper for the new rail system are under way, with distribution also being considered on the bus and boat services run by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). As with other free “metro” newspapers around the world, the new title is likely to offer short news stories that are easy to digest. It is expected to be launched by Kassab Media, the outdoor advertising company that has the contract to sell ad space on Dubai’s new rail system. “Once the network is fully operational we’re definitely
launching a daily newspaper,” said Gerard Rustom, the Regional Sales Director at Kassab Media. “The launch date for the paper would be based on the RTA schedule and we are working accordingly with them. It could be at the end of the year, it could be March.” In addition, an Arabic edition of Digital Photographer magazine has recently been launched by Dar Al Sada, published under license from the UK’s Imagine Publishing Ltd. Aimed at enthusiasts and professionals, Digital Photographer covers high-end digital photography news and techniques, equipment reviews, interviews with professional photographers, cutting-edge imagery and practical shooting advice. Forbes magazine is also set for October return to the Middle East. An Arabic edition of US business and finance magazine Forbes is set to return to the newstands in October with the launch of Forbes Middle East. Forbes Arabia was launched in 2004 by DIT Publishing, but closed along with the rest of the company’s titles in April 2009. The new magazine will be published by Arab Publisher House, a newly
formed company based in Dubai Media City. On the other hand, Trendesign, a bi-monthly magazine covering interior design and architecture, has been launched by Ammanbased publisher Al-Faridah. The English language consumer publication will feature some of the most stunning homes in Jordan and internationally, as well as commercial interiors and interviews with designers and architects. Recently, Dubai-based Middle East publisher Mediaquest Corp., announced it has agreed to acquire several long-standing print and on-line media titles from The Media Factory. The print titles acquired by Mediaquest (which is partially owned by private equity group Abraaj Capital) are also published online. They include Autocar Middle East Magazine, F1 Racing Middle East Magazine, Policy, FourFourTwo Middle East Magazine, and The Brief. Autocar, F1 Racing and FourFourTwo were titles licensed to The Media Factory by Haymarket Media Group Ltd, which are now licensed to Mediaquest.

Dubai: Paper Arabia 2010 Concludes with a Strong Message and Blockbuster Participation
Organisers of the event claimed that general commodity paper is least affected by recession. They also said that expenditure on newsprint is one-third of that on general commodity paper in the UAE

Paper Arabia 2010

According to studies conducted for Paper Arabia 2010, for every dollar spent on newsprint, there are three dollars spent on general commodity paper. The event, which was the first-of-its-kind industry expo, was held at the Dubai International Exhibition and Convention Centre from September 26 to September 28, 2010, and attracted over 6,000 trade visitors, an increase of 16.6 percent. Satish Khanna, the General Manager at Al Fajer Information and Services, organisers of the show,
said, “Paper Arabia was being held every two years and now we are holding it every year. We are upbeat about the industry which we think has great potential for further growth. Among the participants were companies that have Dubai as their main headquarters for Africa and Asia. This reflects the leading role Dubai is playing in the paper industry. According to industry analysts at the show, SMBs are major consumers of the general commodity paper, spending between
AED 100,000 and AED 150,000 annually on this kind of paper. SMBs are companies having between 50 and 250 employees. Newsprint paper includes newspapers and magazines whereas general commodity paper includes office paper, notebooks, business cards, books, wedding cards, greeting cards and corporate and marketing collateral. Sami Al Qamzi, the Director General of the Dubai Department of Economic Development (DED) inaugurated Paper Arabia 2010. Speaking about the paper industry,
Al Qamzi said, “Paper industry is developing all over the world, especially in the Middle East. We have high hopes for this industry in Dubai and the potential is really huge. Nearly 12 percent of Dubai’s GDP is contributed by converting industries, in which the paper industry constitutes a mere 1.5 to 2 percent. This shows the growth potential of the paper industry, taking into consideration that the UAE is one of the highest consumers of paper in the Arab world.” On the question on nationalization of the paper industry, Al Qamzi said that Dubai and the UAE do not impose Emiratisation on any industry, including the paper industry, and the market is filled with people of different nationalities. He added that the UAE has reduced the challenges facing the growth of this industry, such as the cost of production. Khanna further added that previously, Dubai used to be heavily dependent on European suppliers. “However the Dollar-Euro fluctuation has changed the trade equation, making Asia and India better alternatives. These two regions are widening their capacities and enhancing their services to emerge as preferred suppliers,” he explained. “The UAE has certainly emerged as a leader in the distribution of quality paper and it is making great strides in producing paper.”
Paper Arabia 2010: A Gateway to Revive the Market This year’s Paper Arabia exhibition was also envisaged as the gateway to revive the market, significantly after dull economic conditions,
adverse slumming forces followed by relaxed month of Ramadan. Launching of new technologies, products and announcements on business alliances by many of the enthusiastic companies in the region were expected at the event, with Printec LLC from Dubai also determined with the same hope. Printec, which is a company that claims to provide complete solutions to printers in the region, functionally divides its business into two segments – one for machineries and consumables and the other for specialty papers and boards. The claims to have already brought highly advanced machines and excellent range of specialty and fancy papers to the Middle East region. Machines such as Thermal Lamination from D&K (UK), Collators from Col-Tec (Germany), Anseat laser technology, and DLS Steel rule for creasing, cutting and perforating are the few that have added technical credentials to the print producing service industry of this region. Also few of the dignified inclusions in the specialty and artistic paper segment included Naturalis, Advocate, Trucard 0 – the 100 percent wood free and FSC certified specialty papers from Tullis Russell Papermakers (Scotland), and Margono, the embossed and metalised papers and boards from Indonesia and coated art papers, duplex / fbb boards from Focus Corporation that are all set to impress the creative talents hailing from the advertising agencies and branding houses. According to Printec, Maxnoa, the division of specialty premium papers consist only those luxury papers that are produced through
FSC certified pulp and are 100 percent wood free. These new entrants, said the company, are suitable to print corporate profiles, catalogues, newsletters, brochures, danglers, greeting cards, posters, annual reports, letterheads, business cards and miscellaneous corporate stationary. Mazen Haj Ali, the Managing Director of Printec added, “These papers are extra ordinary as in terms of outstanding quality and are meant to complement the image and impact of user’s brand equity. Moreover, these amazing papers will add almost 40 percent of direct cost savings to the printers and agencies when it is compared with unjustifiably costlier specialty paper brands in this market. Specialty paper such as Naturalis is a clear winner demonstrating exceptional paper quality and impressive element due to specially devised twin wire machine technique in production whereby two layers of FSC certified maple pulp are pressed together in paper producing machine in order to bring phenomenal smoothness and excellent tactile formation and opulence.”
Exhibitors Upbeat About Opportunities Speaking to ME Printer about their participation at Paper Arabia 2010, Ravinder Singh, the Operations Manager at Inpap FZ LLC said, “This is our third participation. Our main headquarters for entire Asia is Dubai which serves as a central operation for our offices in Singapore, Jakarta and Mumbai. We represent a wide array of paper mills from India, Indonesia and other Far Asian countries. Leading newspapers

from the Gulf are one of our major customers.” As mentioned earlier, Paper Arabia 2010 embraced not only paper industry but also tissue and converting industries which are currently witnessing tremendous growth. According to exhibitors at the event, the UAE has the potential to emerge a leader in this fast growing industry. “Nearly 70 percent of paper consumed by offices in the UAE is imported from outside the UAE,” Khanna added. “Investors should look into investing more into producing office paper to
reduced number of pages in newspapers and fewer supplements. Over 5 per cent of our revenues come from newspapers, while 25 percent come from packaging and 70 percent from commercial graphic printing.” Commenting on the currency fluctuation with Europe, Singh said that if one buys paper from Europe at one rate and the next day the currency fluctuates one ends up paying more for the same supply. This makes Asia a better alternative for the Middle East. Speaking to ME Printer at the
pulping to stock preparation to papermaking and to the coating and finishing of paper, board, and tissue products. Gareth Harwarth, the General Manager for Engineering Wear Products at Andritz Fiedler Gmbh, said, “We currently operate in Iran as well, since we have customers there. We are engaged in manufacturing of machineries for the pulp and paper industry. We operate from several sites in the world including markets such as Vienna, Finland and so on. This is the very first time we have participated in this event and it has been a good
meet the rising demand that is currently met largely through imports. The expo served as a launching pad for new technologies targeted at the Middle East region. The participants included leading global names from France, USA, UK, India, China, Germany, Taiwan, Indonesia, Austria, Korea to name a few.” France which tops the list of providing highest superior quality of paper and relevant machinery in the world participated through a national pavilion whereas the Chinese pavilion showcased a wide range of household paper products and machinery equipment. French paper machinery manufacturers were scouting for agents in the UAE to represent them in the Middle East. These companies showcased new solutions. The French participation for the second consecutive year was primarily focused on finding new customers for the ten participating companies. Karunesh Singh, the General Manager at Orient Links Co, said, “Our Dubai office is the headquarters for Middle East, Africa and Eastern Europe. The newsprint expenditure is obviously less because of the
event, Sanjay Misra, the Managing Director at Orient Links Co LLC, said, “We got a whole list of visitors from countries such as Iran, Turkey, Ethiopia, Sudan, Oman, UAE, Srilanka, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and so on. It was a good show for us. We also got visitors from Europe and India – in business, the first meeting with client is not a thing that will close a deal. We got lots of sales leads and we did confirm a few orders. We met few end users as well, since we are an export-based company. We make papers such as the copier and wood free noncoated variations. We also make our own pulp from wheat-stock. Our production capacity currently is 175,000 tons, while our pulping capacity is 125,000 tons.” Andritz, an Austria-based company that has continued to make investments in complementary capabilities in order to deliver fullline technical and service solutions to producers of pulp, paper, panelboard, and nonwoven fabrics, was also a part of the event this year. Participating for the very first time, Andritz showcased solutions ranging from wood handling to
show overall.” Arbros Forest Resources, one of the leading trading houses dealing in pulp of various grades such as melamine, rayon as well as paper grades, sack Kraft paper, corrugated material, newsprint paper, boards and so on, participated at Paper Arabia 2010. According to Imran Sheikh, the General Manager at Arbros, Paper Arabia 2010 was a good show this year since the company closed some good deals with customers. “We saw that many customers were coming from countries such as Iran, Africa and Turkey,” added Sheikh. “At the event, we were offering coated paper, uncoated paper, duplex boards, pulp, newsprint, and boards. We currently have offices in Saudi Arabia, China, Pakistan, Canada, and Kuwait, from where we sell to the entire GCC region and source products from other companies globally.” Meanwhile at a press conference, Suresh Kilam, the CEO and Vice Chairman of Asia Pulp Paper (APP) said Saudi Arabia and Iran are top consumers in the Middle East while paper demand in the region reached
3.5 tonnes. Headquartered in Indonesia, APP is one of the world’s leading pulp and paper companies and is ranked one of the largest vertically integrated pulp and paper producer in Asia, excluding Japan. APP established its Dubai office 20 years ago, which covers whole Gulf countries and Iran. “Last year APP sales reached around $300 million in the region,” Suneet Sood, the General Manager of APP International Marketing Pte Ltd said at the conference. “APP is participating in the show for the third consecutive year and each year we try to introduce new products in Paper Arabia. This year we are also introducing some new products in the Middle East market.” Kilam, further added that APP sells around 350 to 400 tons of paper to the Middle East every year. “UAE is the financial hub of the GCC and will be the main paper market hub for the GCC and MENA region,” added Kilam. APP’s stand was perhaps the biggest stand in the show – Head of Product Entrepreneur Department at APP, Anil Kumar Sharma was upbeat about the exhibition. “The exhibition has been very good for us. We met many visitors from coun-
tries in the region specially Iran, UAE and Saudi Arabia. Middle East is a very important market place for us and we supply all grades of paper to this market. We could claim that we are single biggest paper supplier to the Middle East. We are also promoting our food grade paper in the Middle East. As you are already aware we have paper mills in China and Indonesia. Paper price is stabilising although there will be some increase in coming months. The rise in paper price was due to shortage of pulp and shutting down of pulp mills as the result of a devastating earthquake in Chile. However the pulp production is now back on track,” added Sharma. During the exhibition APP was promoting its food grade paper through display of range of packaging products for food stuff. The new food grade paper has a good stiffness with high folding endurance. It is certified as food grade and safe for food contact. It has a good dimensional stability and suitable for flexo and offset printing. The new paper is available in 100 to 110-gsm. Higher grammage is also available upon request. The new paper has a
wide range of applications such as paper food tray, take away boxes and for food packaging purposes it is laminated with corrugated or duplex board. “Our new food grade greaseproof paper is ideal for food packaging. We have always been innovative in launching new products,” said Sharma. Jamal Bekdashe, the CEO of JR Sun Paper Group MEA, on the other hand commented that Paper Arabia 2010 has been the company’s first participation at the event. “We have closed several deals with clients from Jordon , Libya, KSA and UAE. We have decided to set up a main branch in the UAE to be located in Ras Al Khaimah,” added Bekdashe. The highlights of this year’s show was the participation of Chinese companies that booked multimillion dollar orders for many high tech, heavy duty machines. Each Chinese company reported to have gained six to seven potential customers from the region. Paper Arabia 2010 is considered by industry experts as a gateway to the entire Middle East and North African Paper Industry.

Dubai: GITEX Technology Week Celebrates 30th Anniversary This Year
ME Printer Oct 2010
While IT spending in the Middle East and Africa is set to grow faster than almost any other region in the world, many exhibitors also plan to focus on equipments targeted at the regional sign and graphics industry
28
While worldwide technology spending will only grow at three percent, the Middle East and Africa is set to buck the trend as emerging markets drive global industry growth reports IDC, the premier global provider of market intelligence for the information technology, telecommunications and consumer technology markets. Global IT spending figures are set to reach $1.48 trillion for 2010 according to the study. International companies are already recognising the potential for growth in emerging markets like Dubai, with an unprecedented interest and confirmed participation to showcase the latest technology and innovation at this year’s GITEX Technology Week, the region’s most influential ICT exhibition. Experton Group Analysts believe the Middle East will lead the global ICT market recovery with a 12% annual growth over the next three years versus a 1% in Western Europe. Some African countries will also show a very strong growth over the next years clearly outperforming the average. The growth in the Middle East will be strongly build on replacement of server, storage, and client devices together with a strong increase of virtualization as well as investments in new applications, business analytics, system management and monitoring tools, security and cloud computing. Despite an increasing number of outsourcing offerings the market is still developing slowly and a big mistrust
in quality, availability, and the missing experience are hindering a faster adoption rate. This year, GITEX Technology Week will celebrate its 30th anniversary when the exhibition opens from 17 – 21 October 2010 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre (DICEC). The show connects more than 133,000 industry professionals from 134 countries with over 3,500 suppliers and is one of the most influential and high-profile events in the global ICT sector today. The five day event embodies the aspirational vision of the sector by drawing global attention and continuous investment to the Middle East market. “GITEX Technology Week’s 30th anniversary is a key milestone for the UAE and the region’s ICT industry,” said Helal Saeed Almarri, the CEO of Dubai World Trade Centre, the organisers of GITEX Technology Week. “As government and private institutions continue to invest heavily in increasingly advanced technology solutions, the international focus is on developing nations to drive impressive return on investment. International companies are aligning with GITEX Technology Week earlier than ever before, reflecting the increasing demand to generate new business in the UAE and wider Middle East region.”
Focus on Printing Industry Many Exhibitors Focusing on Regional Sign, Graphics and Print Industry While GITEX Technology Week is primarily known as the largest IT exhibition in the region, many exhibitors such as Kofax, Canon, Epson, Fujitsu, Kodak, HP and so on are also going to be showcasing their solutions targeted at the sign, graphics and print industry. Kofax ME FZE, the provider of document driven business process automation solutions for instance, together with imaging partners Canon, Epson, Fujitsu and Kodak will be presenting its portfolio of hardware and software solutions for automating document driven business processes at this year’s
GITEX Business Solutions, 2010. Kofax will show how using scanners, fax, e-mail and MFPs, knowledge workers can bring vital paper documents into their current business system environment early in a process. The company will showcase its departmental document capture and image solutions, Kofax Express and Kofax Virtual Rescan at the event, coupled with powerful document management scanners from Canon, Epson, Fujitsu and Kodak. Kofax Express according to the company makes it easy for anyone to scan, organise and store documents, at speeds that make short work of batches big and small. Kofax Virtual ReScan on the other hand, can reduce the time involved in manual document preparation and enhances the quality of scanned images. Capturing highquality images is critical to the rest of the document management process because image quality significantly impacts the success of data extraction, recognition, and retrieval. 3D Printing
The 3D-Printing Era Is Closer Than
You Think
ME Printer Oct 2010
In order to produce the most realistic training experience possible, many manufacturers have embraced 3D-scanning to quickly capture complex 3D shapes, and 3D-printing to quickly reproduce high fidelity, low cost reproductions of expensive parts
32
If you belong to the print industry, you have probably heard about 3D-printing. However, for those uninitiated, the 3D-printing concept might seem to come from the science fiction domain. But at a small scale it’s already in progress. Let’s make it more clear what 3D-printing really is. Let’s say you have to build a complex structure. For that, first you need a big crew with much experience. In addition to the human factor it would also require many machines that will assemble all the pieces together. Now imagine that all you need is a blueprint and a very complex machine that makes the product from scrap. For instance, just imagine how neat it would be to build a boat by only pressing a button. Long time until this will happen but there are businesses that already use this method. For instance in medicine, artificial limbs are made using a single complex device. And the
final products are of high quality. Many companies around the world are turning to 3D-printing for building complex structures and prototypes of innovations. Traditionally, such types of structures and prototypes were reverse engineered by hand, or using tools like cardboard templates, tape measures and plumb bobs. Once CAD models were developed from this data, traditional manufacturing techniques were used to fabricate the required parts. In recent years, big players in the industry have embraced new methods of development for such jobs. Companies have now started investing in 3D-scanning and rapid prototyping systems. 3D-scanners allow engineers and technicians to rapidly capture millions of data points to define the complex shapes associated with a variety of products and prototypes. This data can then be converted to highly accurate
3D CAD models using specialised software such as Rapidform XOR. Smaller interior components can then be “printed” in 3D on machines such as Objet’s Eden, Connex and Alaris 3D printers. 3D printing is significantly faster and cheaper than CNC machining or injection molding for low volume manufacturing requirements. Interesting Developments in the Field of 3D-Printing. According to industry consultancy Wohlers Associates, the sales of rapid prototyping and additive manufacturing technologies bounced back in 2010. The company’s Wohlers Report 2010 claims that demand for products and services using additivemanufacturing (AM) technologies such as 3D-printing grew by an estimated 13.9 percent in 2010. In contrast, compound annual growth rate (CAGR) had slowed to 3.3 percent over the previous three years.
Clearly the optimum 3D printer for a given application will depend on the type of application but, in terms of purchase cost, towards the bottom end of the market, there are many 3D-printers available on the market such as Z Corporation’s ZPrinter 350. This machine converts 3D data into monochrome physical models in a largely automated process. Using the ZPrinter 350 to create a model is said to be almost as easy as printing a document on paper using a conventional printer. Over the past year or so, other companies introducing new 3D printers for use in an office environment have included Objet Geometries with its multi-material Connex350, Stratasys with its Dimension uPrint Plus for true multi-colour, desktop 3D printing, and Solido3D with its low-cost SD300 Pro 3D printer. One company that is a newcomer to 3D printing is HP, which launched its HP Designjet 3D recently in conjunction with Stratasys.
According to HP, the Designjet 3D allows designers to achieve faster time-to-market and cost savings during product development. It is also claimed to set a new standard for automated 3D printing, office integration and reliability. HP has launched two Designjet 3D printers, with prices starting around EUR 13000. The HP Designjet 3D printer creates accurate models in ivorycoloured ABS, while the HP Designjet Color 3D printer produces parts in eight colours.
ME Printer Oct 2010
Nevertheless, the last 12 months has seen many interesting developments in the field of 3D printing. Terry Wohlers, the principal author of the report and president of Wohlers Associates, states, “Using AM such as 3D-printing for part production is considered the next frontier, with opportunities beyond measure. Corporations, entrepreneurs, investors and researchers are considering ways in which 3D-printing can be used to manufacture an exciting array of products in quantities of one to several thousands. 3D-printing can today be used in two distinct markets for developing products: one is the professional market, which includes the medical, dental, aerospace, automotive and motorsports industries; the other is the consumer market, for products such as home accessories, toys and fashion accessories. Pira International, the worldwide authority on packaging, paper and print industry supply chains, recently shared an interesting market research report exclusively with ME Printer. According to the report, total printing revenues in the Middle East and North Africa region are set to increase from $7.7 billion in 2009, to $11 billion by 2015
Total printing revenues in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region amounted to $7.7 billion in 2009 and are expected to increase to a total of almost $11 billion by 2015, according to a major new study by Pira International, the worldwide authority for the packaging, print and paper supply chains. The study provides a detailed segmentation of the market by end-use sector, printing process and country, with quantitative five-year forecasts based on extensive primary research. Key trends and drivers shaping the sector are discussed, as well as the new technologies employed in production and key players in across the region. According to the study, the printing market made up of four major groups, namely packaging, publishing, advertising and commercial printing, with packaging
is something of an anomaly, with Qatar showing the highest in the world at over $92,000 in 2009, counterpointed by Yemen, among the lowest at $2,500. Since 2001, per capita GDP in the region has grown by 5% annually but this is expected to slow considerably to less than 2% per annum between 2009 and 2015. Household consumption expenditure is a good indicator of domestic economic activity and has particular relevance to domestic consumption of printed matter. Since 2001, this has shown wide fluctuations, with best estimates for the future indicating an average annual growth rate of almost 7% for the medium term, following historical growth of nearly 12% per annum from 2001 to 2009.
ing and this provides a stimulus for the local printing industry which now faces more pressure to meet international standards in order to compete effectively in the global market, particularly in applications such as packaging, labels, and others. This study provides interested parties with an up to date view of the current state of play in the Middle Eastern printing market together with a projection of future activity. The methodology employed for this study focussed heavily on primary research, including interviews with leading players across the value chain, databases and detailed analysis of published information, including collation of data on over 80 paper mills and 1,700 printers. Pira International has an excellent track record in the Middle East, publishing many studies exclusively on this region, including a recent study looking specifically at the market for packaging.

Key drivers and trends Growth in GDP in the Middle East has averaged 5.2% per annum since 2001. In 2009 this had slowed to a still respectable 3.4% in the light of the global recession. This is expected to slip slightly in 2010 to about 3.3%, making a slow recovery thereafter with an average anticipated growth of 2.7% per annum between 2009 and 2015. The region’s economy is heavily dependent on oil prices, despite efforts to reduce this reliance, and prices have shown dramatic fluctuations in recent years with the latest downturn increasing the pressure on these countries to diversify their economies. Per capita GDP in the Middle East
For instance, ageing populations tend to consume more in the way of pharmaceutical, medical and health related products, with a consequent stimulus to the demand for printed folding cartons that are widely used to pack these products. Population growth has obvious implications for the demand for school books and the like, and in this region the population is showing a fairly steady 2% annual increase. Adult literacy, defined as the percentage of the population aged 15 and over who can read and write, clearly has relevance to the print industry. Literacy rates in the region cover a wide range. Despite the long history of conflict in the region, the printing industry is a thriving one attracting foreign

and publishing constituting around 60% of the total. Despite its history of conflict and upheaval, the Middle East has shown economic resilience, particularly in the last ten years with GDP growing by more than 5% annually between 2000 and 2009, albeit on the back of rising oil prices. Of late, many of the countries in the region have been making a concerted effort to reduce their dependency on oil by attempting to diversify their economies through various incentive schemes and investment programmes. Investors are attracted to the region with a menu of incentives including profit repatriation guarantees, tax relief and others. As a result of these initiatives, non-oil exports from the region are increas-

in the region, with many old machines being replaced with modern upgrades as a result of government encouraged investments. Newspapers remain popular, moving to full colour, breaking into small community focused editions with more automation. Books are stimulated by educational demands and technology such as digital printing and books-on-demand. Magazines face demanding consumers following Western trends and looking for higher quality finishes. Recycling is playing an increasingly important role in the supply chain. Strong growth in packaging in the region is fuelled by an urbanising population, growth in processed food production, modernising of the retail industry and growing exports of non-oil products which have led to growth in food and FMCG production. The packaging market in MENA is highly fragmented from a supply perspective, with the largest identified market share – Turkish glass maker Anadolu Cam – accounting for only 3% of the total volume. The top ten suppliers together account for just 14% of the volume, with the
next ten adding a further 7%; this leaves almost 80% of the volume dispersed among hundreds of small suppliers. Multinationals that feature in the top 20 suppliers include Huhtamaki, Mondi, Tetra Pak and Crown, all with shares of less than 1% of the total volume. Almost 50% of the 19 million tonnes of packaging consumed in the MENA region consisted of rigid packs, predominantly plastic; this was followed by glass and metal. Over a quarter of the volume consumed was corrugated board, while flexible materials made up almost 16%. The greatest growth is expected to be seen in demand for liquid packaging board (LPB), foil, flexible plastic/laminate materials and rigid plastic and glass, the latter two categories driven by strong growth in demand for beverage packaging. The healthcare sector will also provide further stimulus to packaging demand over the medium term. Flexible packaging, with an often consequent demand for high quality print, is making inroads into the rigid packaging market. Growing demand for better print finish is common throughout packaging markets, from corrugated to multi substrate flexibles.
Market overview
Turkey is by far the biggest print market in this region, accounting for over one third of printing revenues in 2009, which totalled $7.7 billion. A slight decline is expected in the overall market during 2010, followed by a period of moderate recovery, resulting in a total market valued at almost $11 billion by 2015. Saudi Arabia is expected to show the strongest growth in share in the region, gaining around three percentage points in market share, while Turkey is expected to lose the same amount in share over this period.
Print processes
Offset printing has declined from 63% of the market in 2000 to its current level of just over half the total of $7.7 billion. Over the medium term this is likely to suffer further erosion of market share, sliding to a 45% share by 2015. Flexo printing has pretty well held its own over this period, static at around 12% for much of the past decade and likely
to rise to 13-14% of the market by 2015 in line with faster growth in packaging. The big winner in the industry has been digital printing which has grown significantly from just 2% in 2000 to over 12% in 2009 and expected to reach 23% by 2015. Letterpress and screen printing are losing market share steadily, with a current combined total of 9%. Total sales of printing machinery in the region in 2009 amounted to $211 million. By 2015 this is likely to amount to just over $350 million. During this period, the market share of offset printing equipment sales is likely to fall by 14 percentage points from 46% in 2009 to 32% in 2015, while digital printing will increase its share from 13 to 34% of total machinery sales. Film imagesetters are also set to lose market share to platesetters over the medium term and letterpress and screen printing machinery will continue to show a decline in sales. Developments in modern technology are having a considerable impact on the Middle East publishing and printing industry. Historically, printers and publishers have in many instances been operating equipment installed originally fifty, sixty or more years ago, with limited subsequent investment in more up to date processes. However, encouraged by government initiatives and incentives to reduce the region’s dependence on oil revenues, recent years have witnessed a spate of investments in modern printing and publishing equipment, ranging from high-tech CtP machines to eight-colour Heidelberg Speedmasters. Newspapers are still a thriving medium in the region, although this is expected to tail off over the medium term, but in the mean time many are looking to full colour production using the latest technology. Newspapers are also starting to focus more on local communities, creating new and smaller editions of existing papers. This creates a need for more and smaller print runs, encouraging the use of offset technology. Automation is becoming more and more popular, despite low labour costs. Demand for inks generally was sustained by strong growth in the digital and flexo markets in 2009. Total printing ink revenues amounted to $190 million during 2009 and are set to reach $309 million by 2015. This represents a 2009 market of some

South Korea seems a world apart from Middle East. However 17th Korea International Printing Machinery & Equipment Show (KIPES 2010) could have been a wonderful opportunity for printers in the region to savour first hand Korean state-of-the-art technology for graphic arts industry. KIPES 2010, which was held from 8 to 11 September 2010 at the Korea International Exhibition Center, attracted 308 exhibitors from over 23 countries. The exhibitors showcased a wide variety of graphic arts equipment, including large format printers, prepress systems, finishing equipment and so on. However the absence of giants such as Heidelberg, Man Roland, KBA, Komori and other press manufacturers raised some eyebrows. But their absence was a clear sign of maturing offset market in Korea. In addition, there was a parade of wide format printers and narrow web presses across halls 1 and 2 of Kintex.
A Feast of Digital Printing Equipment Digital technology was dominant in KIPES 2010. HP, by far had the biggest stand at the show. Prior to the show, HP announced the winners of the 3rd Asia Pacific and Japan HP Digital Print Awards 2010. The company received more than 350 submissions from 14 countries for this year’s Awards. HP used KIPES as a springboard to showcase a wide range of Indigo presses. There were no sign of iGens or tuner based technologies. This shows that the Korean market perhaps is an ideal ground for Indigo presses. The arsenal of Indigo presses that were on display included HP Indigo W7200 Digital Press, HP Indigo 7500 Digital Press, HP Indigo 3550 Digital Press, LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling System and HP Thermal Inkjet (TIJ) Technology. HP’s stand was filled with printed products coming out of Indigo presses. An impressive range of photo books that were printed digitally were put on display. Labels, books and tranpromo documents filled almost all the empty spaces. HP’s partners such as Hunkler and GMP also showcased their technol-
ogy in tandem with Indigo presses. The combination of HP Indigo 7200 with Hunkler complete post press system including cutter, separator, stacker and unwinder modules is an efficient solution for transpromotional statements, although it perfectly can be used for short run, on demand book publishing as well. HP also supported Digital Solutions Cooperative (Dscoop) in hosting their first ever conference for graphics arts professionals in Asia Pacific region held in conjunction with KIPES 2010. The Dscoop conference was held from 7 to 8 September 2010. More than 700 global graphic arts leaders including Indigo founder Benny Landa, HP executives and leading printers from around the world participated in the event.
New Equipment From Korean Manufacturers
Apart from HP, two Korean giants Dilli and GMP had the biggest stands. One of the best aspects of KIPES perhaps was to see firsthand the products premiered by the Korean manufacturers for the first time. Dilli one of the leading manu-
facturers of large format printers took the wraps of new equipment for the first time. According to Keun- Soo Choi, the President of Dilli, all of the company’s products showcased at the exhibition were based on inkjet technology. “We are showing our printing products targeted at PCB (printed circuit board), semiconductor and industrial purposes. We reckon by next February, these products will be available in the Middle East.” NEO Jupiter 1006, an all new industrial UV curing printer targets screen printing market. Two of these new printers were up and running in Dilli’s stand. The question is why two identical machines? Perhaps the manufacturer thought you just can’t get enough of one. The machines on display were printing on golf balls and plastic cards. According to manufacturer this machine is ideal for printing on PCB (printed circuit board), semiconductor and industrial equipment. The output width of the machine is 1000 x 1000 mm with maximum operation speed of 0.84 m/sec (1 pass). The new machine supports edge to edge printing as well as white ink. The printer uses 5 Spectra Galaxy

drop on demand piezo heads. NEO Jupiter delivers maximum resolution of 1200-by-1200-dpi. One of interesting feature of this machine is automatic height adjustment up to 120mm. The machine prints 5 colour including white. A new model of Neo Titan large format printer was also launched. The new machine prints 6 color plus two varnishing. The Neo Titan is a combo type UV large format printer which uses the conveyor belt feeding system. It can print on both rigid and flexible substrates. The quality of the printer has improved. It can print in uni and bi directional modes. Another highlight in Dilli’s range of new products is its new label printing press, Neo Mercury. The machine displayed in the show was a prototype and the company will launch it commercially by next year. This machine represents company’s new strategy for diversification into new markets. NEO Mercury is a single pass UV inkjet printer for production of labels. It uses DOD Piezo Electric Technology. The machine is offered in two models NM- L50 and NM- L 100 with 53 and 105 mm imaging width respectively. Both machines deliver 600 dpi resolution and print 5 color including white. The printer can print on all kind of substrates including film, supported film, foil, tag and the list goes on. After visiting Dilli, the next stop for any visitor to the show would be

GMP, a leading Korean manufacturer of laminating machines for a wide range of applications. GMP showcased an impressive lineup of laminating and UV coating machines, which is a new field for the company. The recession forced many companies to either consolidate or diversify. It seems that GMP chose the second path which is an extension of what it does best. The company launched three new UV coating machines from Eurocoater family. EUROCOATER Plus3752 UV is a new machine that takes advantage of 3 roll coating system. The maximum coating speed is 35 m/min and the maximum feeding speed is 6000 sheets per hour. The machine is equipped with automatic UV recirculation pump and touch panel. The maximum coating dimensions in Plus 3752 is 820x29080x1280 mm. The Eurocoater Plus3752 premium has the same features as its smaller brother however it can coat on bigger sheets up to 820x4300x1150 mm. And also it is faster. Its maximum coating speed is 40m/min, whereas in Plus 3752 the speed does not exceed 35m/min. For spot varnishing the company introduced EUROCOATER PLUS- 5680SPOT. The company also premiered IMAGECOATER 33, a desktop UV coater with the maximum coating width of 320 mm. The coater’s top speed is 3m/min and it is easy to operate. GMP also introduced GMP LAMIMASTER-34 laminator. This system
has been developed with the cooperation of HP and it addresses the market for book-cover production and high-value photo applications. For lamination the company brought its top of the line products including PROTOPAC- PLUS 520 A,
EUROLAM II-520, OMEGA 720 and PACKERLAM 1200 RTR. During the exhibition the PACKERLAM laminated rolls of printed film with heating elements. These laminated rolls of heating elements then will be used to heat floorings. It is an alternative to boilers for floor heating. d.gen is a familiar name for textile printers. The company showcased its enhanced industrial textile printer Artrix GT plus a new offline cutter and creaser. Andrea Negretti, the President of Italy Branch at d.gen said that the company is showcasing different colour machines for textiles at the event. “At this event we are showing machines for polyester fabrics, banners and flex. Our machines usually can print on cotton, silk, and wool – every kind of fabric. We also have cutter, web machines, and so on. This business is growing because of technological advancements. If you take the worldwide textile market into consideration, we cover just 1 percent
of the entire market. But these are big installations – we are talking about eight-colour printing. Our machines only use water-based inks and not UV – hence our products are environment-friendly as well.”
able presence in KIPES 2010. Some of them were quite advanced. Bangsung Machinery is one of the leading label printing press manufacturers in Korea. The company which is specialised in rotary label printing press showcased a new model from BSR 30 series. The maximum web width on this press is 310 mm. Taekyoung is also another well known manufacturer intermittent rotary label press plus diecutting machines for label industry.
And There Were Others
Kilhun Lee, the CEO of d.gen meanwhile said that though the company did not have any new products to showcase this year, it has improved the quality of its products. “Textile printing is destiny. In many countries wherein textile products are produced, one thing that is still lacking is labour. The number of labourers required is huge and so the cost goes up eventually. Textile printing is the only way to solve this problem,” Lee explained. There were also a number of other Korean large format printer manufacturers at the event including DYSS which is mostly known for its digital cutting solutions. The company showcased Apollo UV printer series plus X 7 digital cutter series with the speed of up to 1000 mm/min. During the exhibition the cutter was constantly working and cutting corrugated boards and foams. Narrow web presses had a notice-
Chinese manufacturers as usual occupied a substantial part of exhibition floor. Cron a leading manufacturer of CTP systems in China displayed UV CTP system for imaging of conventional plates as well as flagship thermal platesetter. Cron UV CTP system has a maximum speed of 45 plates per hour with the resolution of 1500 dpi. The machine is targeting the newspaper industry. Cron TP series thermal CTP can image up to 50 plates per hour with the resolution of up to 3000 dpi. Printing plate manufacturer Hufeng from China used KIPES as a platform to promote its latest PS and UV- CTcP plates. The company was established in 2003 and it produces more than 15 million square meter plates per year. The company will participate in Gulf print exhibition in2011. Lichtzen introduced its latest drying
and curing technology. Lichtzen is a leading Korean manufacturer of UV curing dryer, IR dryer, MIR/ NIR dryer, Spot UV curing system, UV lamps and semiconductor exposure devices. As I earlier mentioned offset presence in KIPES was disappointing however there were a wide range of postpress equipment from Korean manufacturers that is not well known here in the Middle East. Hercules paper cutter (guillotine) is one of them. The cutting machine is quite advanced and is equipped with hydraulic cutting and clamping as well as computer control system. The machine also has safety features such as infra red safety control.
Side Events and Seminars
Parallel to the show a number of interesting side events and conferences took place during KIPES 2010. A special dinner ceremony for overseas VIP visitors was held on September 8. Representatives of trade associations and government officials including president of Korean Printing research Institute, Chairman of Korean Printers Association, President of Mongolian Printing Association, Chairman of Korean Printing Information Technology Association, Director of Selangor and Federal Territory Chinese Printing Associations delilivered speeches. Three female

KIPS 2010 Korean artists also performed tradition Korean music using traditional Korean instruments. According to Jin Bae Kim, the Chairman of Korean Printing Information Technology Association, the association consists of manufacturers and printers. The association’s role in the market is to have collaboration between the printers and manufacturers, to work on new technologies, spread information about new products and developments, and so on. The association currently has about 120 members. “We also lobby with the government for new law, and so on. We conduct conferences and exhibitions, and promote Korean printers and manufacturers globally as well,” said Bae Kim. “The major problem for local printers currently is the transition from conventional printing methods to digital. The local market is currently not very good at the moment and so many vendors are focused on exports.” There were also a number of
interesting seminars on different topics from state of Korean printing industry to RFID. However the seminar’s language was Korean, except the conference on G7 standard presented by top members of International Digital Enterprise Alliance (IDEAlliance.) Commonly referred to as G7, the GRACoL 7 specification is the seventh and latest version from IDEAlliance. G7 was developed based on the results of research sheetfed press runs conducted at nine US sheetfed printers in 2004 and 2005. Input was also taken from existing ISO printing standards. “In the US, most of the printing is now done, matching the G7 standard. The purpose of adapting this new standard is to update the existing standards and specifications used by offset printers, both web and sheetfed,” added Ron Ellis, a Consultant and G7 Expert. According to Steve Smiley, a G7 Expert and Director of Color Technology at Vertis Communication,
“Some printers have done it blindly because it became a US standard. So if I were a graphic designer, all I would have to do is provide the proof to the customer and if they like it, all the printer has to do is calibrate to the G7 standard to match the proof. This means, no messing around with the brush stroke to match something they can’t.” Don Hutcheson founder of G7 and President of HutchColor explained the origins of G7 and how it helps printers and print buyers get more value out of ISO 12647 printing standard. G7 defines specifications for a single device- independent grayscale appearance. It is a method of calibrating any printing system using grayscales instead of single ink scales. This standard in fact is an interpretation of ISO 12637-2 which is applicable to all printing method not just lithography. During the seminar other topics such as convergence between print and non print and Process Standard Offset (PSO) were also discussed.
