Editor’s Note

Eskandar Jahanbani Editor in Chief

This is our last issue before we pack for our summer holidays. Our combined August and September issue is full of news and views. Our special focus in this issue is on label industry, which is one of the most attractive and lucrative printing markets available. Label printers not only managed to survive during the great recession but also they were able to invest in new technology including state-of-the-art narrow web presses. The unique situation of UAE as a business hub is also a major factor for their impressive growth. The success of label printers is persuasive enough for commercial offset printers to venture into this territory. However printing label is quite complex, usually involving narrow web presses equipped with many processes such as, flexo, gravure, offset and digital print stations as well as a host of finishing operations in one pass. For a commercial offset printer, it is a huge challenge to gather the required skilled staff and to pool the knowledge to handle all these processes. However there are areas within label printing that commercial printers can benefit from. Heidelberg, Man Roland, KBA and others are also offering solutions for printers who are willing to enter this market. The demand for printed electronics and RFID labels is creating exciting opportunities for printers as well. Conventional wisdom tells us that summer is a slow season for our region, as far as the business is concerned. But if you flip through this issue of our magazine you’ll find out that this is not true, and seems more like a myth. Let you be the judge.

Kuwait: Printing Press For Special Need People to Be Build

ME Printer Aug - Sep 2011

The press costs about one million dollars and aims to employ disabled people

The Director of the Centre for Vocational Rehabilitation for the Disabled in the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour, Hamad Al-Khalidi, in a press statement announced that for the first time, the ministry has undertaken to establish a printing press for people with special needs. Khalidi said that the estimated cost of the printing press is around 910,000 US$ (250,000 dinars) and that the con-

struction work for it is at the final stages. Expected to be opened officially during this summer, the press will employ about 25 to 40 interns with disabilities from the Centre for Vocational Rehabilitation, in addition to an experienced technical team, who will train the interns. According to Khalidi, the goal of establishing the printing press is to diversify the training workshops held for children with disabilities and also to achieve self sufficiency in printing. Currently the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour relies on private printing presses to print their posters, invitation cards, brochures as well as other printing requirements. Talking on the requirements of the Centre for Vocational Rehabilitation, Khalidi said that around 179 people were

trained so far and pointed out that the centre receives new trainees twice a year, with the admissions opening during the beginning of the school year and also during the start of the second half of the year. He said that the centre has around 540 staffs and urged that this number is not enough to manage the administration needs of the centre. He mentioned that another 50 members must be inducted to the staff to hold training workshops in various areas. Khalidi also requested the Ministry to strive for the establishment of vocational rehabilitation centres for the disabled in all provinces. He added that currently such centres are functioning only in the province of Hawalli and Ahmadi and pictured the difficulty suffered by the family of disabled people in accessing these centres.

Middle East: Ramadan Engages Printing Presses in the Region The demand for printing calendars climbs during the holy month With Ramadan approaching, people have started preparation for the holy month much in advance. Printing presses are also preparing for the month by printing calendars and greeting cards, in addition to printing Quran and other religious printed material. During the month of Ramadan, there is a high demand from companies and individuals for printing Ramadan calendars and other material, which increases the working hours of the printing presses and doubles their effort to meet the deadlines. The printing of calendar for Ramadan dates back to the era of Muhammad Ali Pasha, former ruler of Egypt, when he first printed the Ramadan calendar in Bulaq Printing Press in Egypt in 1845. The Ramadan calendar has undergone many changes over the years and differs in shape and size in different countries, fitting the sanctity of the holy month. The size and shape of the calendar differs according to the purpose of the organisation, which prints it during the month of shabban. In Palestine there has been an increase in the number of printing presses that prints and distributes

Ramadan Calendar. Sheikh Mohammad Hussein, Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and Palestine and President of the Council of Fatwa, asked all the owners of printing presses and libraries, who wish to print Ramadan calendar, to consult with the Council of Fatwa on the dates and times to maintain accuracy, before printing the calendar. He also asked to adopt the time of Al Aqsa Mosque in all calendars, to unify the prayer timings in the area. Bader Safadi, Director General of Firas Press in Jordan and Vice President of the Printing and Packaging Sector in the Jordan Chamber of Industry said that during Ramadan the press increases its capacity as the orders exceed during the month. He said that the major orders during the month are usually for printing Ramadan calendars, in addition to print promotions, greeting cards etc. He pointed out that in some cases; almost 200,000 copies of calendars were ordered during the period of Ramadan. In Saudi Arabia the case is not different said, Shaaban Ibrahim, Sales Coordinator of Print Aid Trading Group in Saudi Arabia. He said that the level of work and production is

He added that during the month most of the orders are for printing books or pamphlets related to Islam and also for printing the Ramadan calendar.

North Sudan to spend 40 million Euros for printing new banknotes The President of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit unveiled the new currency for South Sudan at a ceremony held at the Central Bank in Juba, southern Sudan. The currency will be termed in pounds and will have denominations starting from one, five, ten, twenty, fifty and one hundred. Elijah Malok, governor of the Central Bank in a press statement said that the new currency will be adopted for the distribution and exchange of salaries and business dealings and explained that initially the value of the South Sudanese pound will be equal to that of the Sudanese pound. The Sudanese pound, according to the Central Bank of Sudan currently trades at about 2.67 dollars. The new banknotes are printed with the image of the late John

Garang, the rebel leader who died just months after signing the 2005 peace treaty that ended Africa’s longest internal war and that paved the way for nationhood. David Deng, Minister of Finance and Economy and Planning refused the allegations that the printing cost for the currencies has been covered by donor countries. While on the other side, Sudanese President, Omar al-Bahsir said that he would issue a new currency for North Sudan to replace the Sudanese pound. According to Al-Ahram Today newspaper, the Central Bank of North Sudan will print the new currency in various denominations and will print smaller denominations like 5 pounds and 2 pounds locally, while higher denominations will be printed in Malaysia according to the specifica-

tions of the new currency. It is estimated that the cost of printing the new currency will come to over 40 million Euros. According to Mohamed Khair Al-Zubair, Governor, Central Bank of Sudan, the bank will launch the new edition of the South Sudanese currency on a gradual pace.

Kuwait: British Industries Adds Solution From Muller Martini The solution consists of two NewsGrip-A as well as a Preciso rotary trimmer

Reyad M. Abu Daqer (right), Board Member and General Manager at British Industries Printing & Packaging Co., discussing the advantages of the Preciso high-performance rotary trimmer with Felix Stirnimann, Vice President Mailroom and Press Delivery Systems at Muller Martini

Expanding and diversifying their printing operations, British Industries & Packaging Co. based in Shuwaikh (Kuwait) have added a hybrid CROMOMAN printing press from MAN Roland along with a combined press delivery system and a newspaper dispatch solution from Muller Martini to their printing facility. British Industries, established in 1993 offers offset printing services, soft box manufacturing and prints a wide range of products including annual reports, brochures, calendars etc. A part of the Tamdeen group, the press prints jobs in sheet fed offset machines ranging from four to ten colour. The recent investment is aimed to print high-quality

newspapers and magazines as well as to manufacture heatset and coldset products. The recently acquired CROMOMAN from MAN Roland offers a solution for any configuration, ranging from 4/4 colour printing on one web or 2/2 colour printing on two webs or 1/1 colour printing on four webs. Reyad M. Abu Daqer, Board Member and General Manager at British Industries Packaging Co. commenting on the recent acquisitions said, “In order to ensure optimum finishing for our printed products, we have chosen the combined press delivery system and a newspaper dispatch solution from Muller Martini. This solution consists of two NewsGrip-A chains to ensure products are transported quietly and securely, as well as a Preciso high-performance rotary trimmer for reliable and precise three-sided trimming at maximum press speed. There are also two packing lines with a Listo stacker and Orgapack strapping technology to guarantee perfect packages. We will put the new printing press and finishing system into operation later this year. Also we are planning to expand by adding an inserting machine and a bundle formation equipment.” Detailing their advance into

newspaper printing, he said, “Newspapers must be delivered in time. Moreover, editorial supplements and advertising related inserts and stickers increasingly feature with the editions. This has made Mail rooms indispensable for all operations between the press and the loading dock. That’s the reason why we chose Muller Martini, as they have a good reputation and excellent after sales services in the market.” Explaining the future plans of the company, Reyad detailed that they are building two new buildings to house the new CROMOMAN web offset machine and the Muller Martini mail room and are planning to shift the present production facility to one of these rooms with more new machines including digital. Observing the recent trends and developments in printing sector, Reyad pointed out that digital revolution, which was once feared to impact traditional printing, has in fact assimilated in the mainstream print media. He added that though printing on paper has become really competitive, the paper industry is still in a dynamic position. “In the future customer demands will signify technological advances, which will make the print industry forever innovative,” added Reyad.

Protesting against the government decision that increased the price of each copy of newspaper by 2 dollars, most of the newspapers in Mauritania in Africa decided to stop publication until the issue is resolved. A press statement issued by the Mauritanian press, says that

the decision to increase the printing costs is not reasonable as the private printing sector lacks any form of government support and faces weak advertising revenues and has declined sales revenues due to the lack of proper distribution channels.

The statement further said that the stern attitude of the Mauritian authorities will serve as a final blow to the printed press. About 30 newspapers have stopped their publication along with some websites to protest against this decision.

Qatar: Ministry of Culture Establishes New Departments The new media law regulates the licensing of media outlets The Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage recently established new sections to deal with licensing, publication, artistic works and broadcast media. The licensing department will issue licenses for publications, press and printing houses, publishers, libraries etc. The publication department will deal with the censorship of publications that are presented to the State and other tasks like registration of publications, approving the ad-paper-half-page2011-outline.ai 12:15:04 PM distribution and7/19/2011 publications of printed materials, etc. The

department of artistic works will monitor all works of art produced locally and externally. In our discussions, we found out that there were some gaps, in the shift from using offset to digital. So to make them more familiar on how to use digital efficiently, we invited Dr. Nubar to talk on this topic, as he can give an idea on when you shouldn’t use digital and when you shouldn’t use offset.” Ayman added that the one day workshop was conducted in Arabic and the session started with an assessment on using digital technology followed by open discussions and a presentation from Dr. Nubar.

Changing Markets

Ayman commented that though the political situations in Egypt are not on the positive side, it has

always provided them a good market. “Though we haven’t signed any new deals, we are getting a lot of good feedbacks from the market. People are keeping their fingers crossed on the hopes of a surge as there are a lot of projects waiting to be implemented in the following months,” added Ayman. Focusing more on African markets, Canon recently participated at SIAGRA- Digital Expo Africa in Morocco, where it addressed production challenges that Canon’s professional print customers face within the graphic arts and CRD sectors. Detailing on the expo he said. “SIAGRA was promising with a lot of finishing options and a lot of paper suppliers. The expo revealed that the market is matured. This was our firs presence in Morocco as a professional print and we have nominated a new partner in the region.” He added that they handle 21 countries in Africa and 15 countries in Middle East to which they have recently added 8 countries from East Africa, thereby expanding their portfolio of service to 45 countries in the region. “So far, despite of Egypt and the Tunisia issue, in professional print we are higher than last year including the performance of Egypt in last year.” Detailing the new launches, he said that Canon Middle East during the Gulf Print & Pack have launched a new series of ImagePress, which offers more than 150 modifications and enhancements compared to the previous one. Ayman briefed that they are receiving many positive feedbacks from customers regarding its colour consistency and finishing capabilities. “Just before Gulf Print, we had launched the imageRunner Advance Black & White Light Production for small and medium businesses. We had a higher demand from Europe and ME than what we had expected. What we achieved from this now equals to what we had achieved from its predecessor in 2010, con-

sidering political situations and supply issues. So, it is very promising and will help copy shops and medium businesses.” Ayman added that they have a lot of new products in the line as a result of the merger between Canon and Océ, especially black and white products but they have yet to decide on the sales channels.

Future Beholds

Explaining the strategy of Canon, Ayman briefed that, “In 2009, our strategy was exposure. Now, we are focusing on developing our direct sales operations, delivering best quality sales and services possible. We will be focusing in helping our customers develop their business. We are now working on a micro level with our sales and operation team to develop our platform for our business.” Asserting that the recent Tsunami had resulted in a little shortage of products, he clarified that Canon had reached their revenues and targets despite this. “There was good planning and management from supply chain and logistics department from Europe and Canon ink as well as from outside to meet the shortcomings, so by July we will fulfil all our stock orders.”

Digital Shift

“There are a lot of installations going in the digital side. Major corporate companies in the Middle East printing arena have installed digital machines. This is a good indication that organisations are now moving towards digital,” said Ayman. Ayman added that with the shift towards digital, the digital printing has to increase its capacity and reduce some running cost in order to increase the level of break even point between offset and digital. “We have to reduce this gap by reducing running cost and increasing productivity and capacity, thereby encouraging big printers to use digital machines,” concluded Ayman.

Speaking to ME Printer, Al Qahtani expressed his satisfaction in taking over the position as President of the Committee, which he said gave him great responsibility in accomplishing the goals set by the Chamber. Al Qahtani added that the Committee was founded 15 years ago and the increasing number of print and publishing houses and their emergence on a professional level has made the functioning of the chamber more important. Talking about the functions of the Printing press committee, Al-Qahtani said that the committee discussed the topics assigned for the task groups as well as matters that were referred to it by the Chamber. Speaking about the printing industry in the Kingdom, AlQahtani said that the printing market in the Kingdom is fast developing. Also talking about the challenges in the printing market in the Kingdom he add-

16

ed, “I think the government’s perception of the printing industry does not match the real nature of this dynamic industry. Since government sees printing as only a commercial activity and not as a manufacturing endeavour, it imposes a series of regulations, which pose a great challenge to all of us.” Al-Qahtani noted that the committee is seeking to conduct studies that will highlight the value of the printing industry in the Kingdom and its role in boosting national economy. Explaining the committee’s future plans, Al-Qahtani said that the committee has many projects and plans, including the development of relationship with the Ministry and other government departments thereby reducing the difficulties faced by the printing and publishing sector in the Kingdom. Also, the committee plans to conduct

regular training programs and to highlight printing as a manufacturing industry. Al Qahtani also expressed his interest in observing the activities of similar committees in other Gulf States, such as those of the Printing and Publishing Group in UAE and talked about his plans to build cooperation in this area and to know the achievements of the group and its efforts in the printing industry. Asharqia Chamber was established in 1952 and holds a prominent position in the Chamber of Commerce and Industry both at the Arab and regional levels. The number of subscribers reached 24,000 last year and the committee plays a major role in enriching the lives of the people, especially in the eastern region of the Kingdom and GCC in general by establishing many facilities and training centres.

Lebanon: Paper Industry Experiencing High Cost of Production and Waste High cost of energy and unhealthy competition is hurting the sector; says the President of Paper Industries Federation

Fady Gemayel, President of the Federation of Paper Industries with the delegation meeting the Industry Minister Freij Sabonjian

make Lebanon a hub for the packaging sector as well as for the manufacturing of goods with high added value. We have the resources, capacity and the knowledge pool to achieve it. Meanwhile the Federation has already conducted a comprehensive case study on the challenges and opportunities faced by the paper industry in Lebanon. Based on this study, it was found that although the imported papers are subject to taxation large quantity of paper is entering Lebanon illegally through different borders. The study points out that the paper industry in Lebanon is largely based on recycled waste paper to help reduce the cost of production. The study also suggests that in order to protect local paper manufacturers, exporting waste paper from Lebanon to other countries must be banned.

ME Printer June 2009

The President of the Federation of Paper Industries, Fady Gemayel says that a number of factors including poor infrastructure, high energy cost as well as cut throat competition from abroad is threatening the local paper industry. On the other hand the neighbouring oil rich countries are benefiting from good infrastructure and low price energy. In such a backdrop it is very difficult for the Lebanese paper industry to compete. Talking to the Lebanese press Gemayel said that despite the challenges, paper industry in Lebanon soldiers on by transforming the challenges to opportunity. He also said that the Lebanese industrialists are playing a pivotal role in the region by striving to be a reliable partner for European companies and making Lebanon a business hub for the region as well as for Africa. RAK Ceramics Shifts to Digital Printing The ceramic manufacturer enhances printing through digital technology

ME Printer June 2009

Digital printing has enhanced the appearance of ceramic tiles. With the advent of modern technology, tiles can now be tailor made to match the aesthetic look of any office or residential environment. It gives manufactures the freedom to design tiles by giving attention to minute details and offering customers a wide range of choices. RAK Ceramics headquartered in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE is a USD 1 billion business conglomerate that manufactures ceramic tiles and sanitary wares. The company has recognised digital printing as a key factor and has enabled digital printing to produce high definition marble, wood effects and rustic/stone developments in tiles. Abdallah Massaad, Deputy CEO, RAK Ceramics says, “Digital printing technology has really been a key tool that has enabled RAK Ceramics to assert its leadership in design, quality and a has given a unique ability to cater to the distinct aesthetic demands of our customers worldwide as it makes it a lot easier for us to conceptualise, develop and implement a variety of creative ideas, designs and schemes.” Detailing the technology and the printing process, A. Jayakumar, Chief Operating Officer, RAK Ceramics said that digital printing technology has helped to create a surge in demand for designs and effects that are closer to natural elements, such as marbles and stones. He added, “We currently have around 13 machines that include a DURST, one CRETA PRINT, 6 KERA JET etc. We have also placed orders for another DURST and a Colourjet machine, which will be

18

installed soon. All of our machines are bought from Spain, Italy.” Jayakumar said that they have been using digital technology for the past 2 years and it uses a piezoelectric device that deforms under voltage, enabling droplet expulsion. Digital technology can be used to print on any product with significant surface texture and allows the use of virtual equipment like data files instead of physical files. But he added that digital technology has limitations in respect of colour. “We cannot print all colours as in a traditional printing machine. In digital, we use only 4 colours to print all designs. But the clarity of printing is better than using a traditional press.” Talking about the printing operations, he said that the company had been using Rotocolor printing machine, where the design is engraved in the cylinder by using laser, which is later transferred to the tiles. Some of RAK Ceramics’ tiles that

have been produced using digital printing technology include the “Stone Art” collection, marble finish series such as the “Orion” collection and wood finish series such as the “45x45 Wood Series” collection. RAK Ceramics is currently running its digital printing facility at full capacity in light of the strong global demand for these products. Established in 1991 in Ras Al Khaimah, RAK Ceramics has 10 factories in UAE and 5 factories outside UAE in Iran, Bangladesh, China, India and Sudan. The per day production capacity of RAK Ceramics accounts to around 355,000 sq.m, and they supply to over 137 countries. Jayakumar explained that the inks used for printing on tiles are UV inks and are very environment friendly. He added that these prints are durable and the colour of the print will not diminish because of the high firing temperature used during printing. “Aggressive adoption of advanced technologies has allowed RAK Ceramics to accelerate its global growth plans and firmly establish the company as the world’s largest manufacturer of ceramic tiles and bathware. We are committed to continue investing in modern printing technologies to help us unlock more exciting growth opportunities and reaffirm our reputation as a world-class technology innovator in the tile industry,” added Massaad.

Goodbye Pit Stops! KBA shows off its Rapidas to Italian delegation

On 12 July, 50 Italian print professionals gathered at KBA’s customer showroom in Radebeul for an update on the latest advances in sheetfed offset automation and quality control, with demos on the Rapida 106. Longstanding KBA customers like Mondadori Printing and G. Canale & C., print enterprises working with non-KBA presses were also represented. Following an opening ad-

dress by KBA Executive Vicepresident for sheetfed sales, Ralf Sammeck, and a brief introduction, the first press to be fired up was a ten-colour Rapida 106 with DriveTronic SPC dedicated plate-cylinder drives which printed four jobs in five-backing-five perfecting mode using a total of eight formes. The first job was a cookbook printed on 135gsm (36lb) matt art paper, with simultaneous high-speed

plate changing, washing and makeready for the different signatures. For the next jobs the press operators also changed the substrate and format, printing on 70, 80 and 400gsm (30, 37 and 186lb Bristol) art paper. The demo concluded with flying job changes entailing four different language versions for a four-colour catalogue. The six-colour Rapida 106 was used to demonstrate inline finishing. First of all it printed package leaflets on 60gsm offset (16lb bond) paper from an RS106 reel-to-sheet feeder. After conversion to sheet production matt-gloss effects were created with a partial application of oil-based varnish and subsequent high-gloss aqueous coating. Then followed a surprise run with gloss-coated images taken at the event, plus shots of Dresden and Radebeul. To finish up a run of packaging for Stollen (German Christmas cake) was printed on GT1 carton board.

The Blank Sheet Project in association with D&AD focuses on the truth of this in the creative design industry. Over the coming months, four globally renowned creative designers will share their approach over a blank sheet of paper, starting with designer/ typographer, Neville Brody. Through the Blank Sheet Project website, www.theblanksheetproject.com, Neville Brody and his fellow creative artists will respond to the question, ‘How will we

leave our mark?’ They will explore the whole process of creativity, from inspiration to finished idea. Neville Brody is an internationally renowned designer, typographer, art director and brand strategist. He was awarded a Special Commendation by Prince Philip for his Designers Prize alongside Vivienne Westwood, and was made a Fellow of the University of the Arts, London in 2010. Through The Blank Sheet Project we would like to share our belief that creative thinking is a powerful force for change. By providing a platform for those

who have already made their mark in this way, we hope we can inspire and encourage future generations to challenge and be creative to leave their own mark.” The Blank Sheet Project was first conceived as an internal innovation programme in 2010. The manage¬ment of Arjowiggins Creative Papers asked themselves and their staff, “If we started again; if we had a blank sheet of paper; if we put sustainability at the very top of the agenda; what would we do? How could we do things differently?” From over two thousand responses generated within the company, Arjowiggins Creative Papers is now developing an ambitious sustainability strategy to reflect their concern for people, and the planet.

The Quality Assurance System (QCS), where online detecting devices are installed to monitor the web quality. The Information Management System (IMS), where management personnel may access production data anytime through his or her own PC. The SAP system is an online administrative system that covers procurement of raw and subsidiary material as well as management of spare parts and inventory maintenance, human resources etc. Talking on the global coated paper market and the road show, Suresh Kilam, Executive Director, APP commented, “This is our third leg of the road show. We had held the first one in Bombay, the second in New Delhi and now we are in Dubai. We are planning similar shows in other parts of the Middle East and also in India.” Explaining more on the global paper consumption levels, Suresh said, “The world paper consumption for the last year was 415 million tones. From 2000 till 2010, the combined share of North America and Western Europe has declined from 62 to 42 per cent. An interesting trend

observed in the market is that when a single ipad or any other tablet is being sold in the market, about 10 kilograms of writing material disappears from the market. Though the demand for paper is going down in Western regions, in Asia and in Middle East, you can see the reverse.” Suresh forecasts that for 2020, there will be an improved growth for China, while the industrial paper consumption will go up by 71 per cent. He added that during the next 5 years, the top ten paper mills in China will consume more than 80 per cent of the Chinese market and 30 per cent of the world market. APP has recently acquired 11 pulp and paper mills in North America and Western Europe. Currently they have a production of about 7.5 million tones in China and are planning further expansion in the near future. The event also saw the unveiling of the new paper brand of APP, the ‘Hi-Kote’, coated paper. Anil Sharma, Product Entrepreneur Department, APP explained, “It is a perception that products from Asia and China are not of good quality, the improved situation and technological advancements has improved the products from the region.” Talking about the new coated paper launched by APP, Anil said that the tetra coated system (4 layers of coating) brings an excellent uniform printing surface to the paper that delivers perfect printability and sharpness. The range includes the Hi-Kote C2S Gloss and the Hi-Kote C2S Matt. The gloss comes in a range of 128 to 250 gsm and is acid free, offers superior gloss, smooth finish; exquisite soft surface combined with good readability and can be printed on offset, rotogravure, flexo and letterpress. The matt paper comes in a range of 128 to 250 gsm with similar qualities and can be printed on offset, flexo and letterpress.

Package Printing is now one of the most dynamic sectors in the printing industry. It is estimated that flexible packaging and carton production in Europe alone would be in excess of a €20 billion market. The industry is mainly driven by consumer demand, changing legislation, higher quality and performance requirements, environment and sustainability, the rise of ‘own label products’ and the pressure on price and costs. Catching the whirlwind, the Label Expo Europe 2011 will focus on the printing of flexible packaging, cartons and tubes using narrow web conventional and digital presses. The event is scheduled to take place from 28th September to 1st October at Brussels Expo, Europe. The organisers of the expo, Labels Group expects that the show will be the largest ever label event. Whether printed on conventional quick-changeover narrow web-fed analogue flexo, offset or combination process presses, or on new generations of digital roll- or sheet-fed presses using dry toner, liquid toner or UV inkjet, package printing is un-

dergoing significant changes in everything from origination to pre-press, proofing, workflow, printing and finishing. Like many other sectors, flexible packaging is not immune from the changing requirements for reduced run lengths, differentiation in SKU proliferation, test marketing for new product launches, minimizing stockholding and inventory reduction, faster delivery and expanded promotional opportunities. These changes favour printing on narrow webs and the use of digital printing technologies. The popular Digital Print Workshops, which was first introduced at last year’s Labelexpo Americas, will make their debut in Europe this year. Three printing technologies (dry toner, liquid toner and inkjet) will be compared against each other during live machine demonstrations that will be run by an independent moderator. Technologies will be presented by Xeikon, HP and EFI Jetrion respectively. There will be four sessions per day, where the companies will be printing the same job on the same mate-

Official Media Partner for drupa 2012 in the Middle East

rial. The fourth session will allow participants to print a label of their choice. For the first time at any Labelexpo show, there will also be a new feature dedicated to package printing. The Package Printing Zone will consist of seminar sessions and working machinery demonstrations. The aim of this feature is to introduce label printers to opportunities in short-run package printing (including flexible packaging, folding cartons, pouches and sachets). Many of these jobs can be printed on narrow to mid web presses and there will be package printing presses on display at the show. The zone will provide carton and flexible packaging printers with an ideal opportunity to see and hear the latest innovations in narrow-web conventional and digital presses for printing on unsupported films and a wide range of board or tube laminate materials. Both the Technology Workshops and the Package Printing Zone will be free to attend for visitors to the show. Roger Pellow, Labelexpo Managing Director said: “Labelexpo Europe is set to be the largest edition yet and this will mean more working machinery and more opportunities for label converters and brand owners. The Technology Workshops is our most popular feature ever and will allow visitors to evaluate the different printing technologies in detail. Similarly the Package Printing Zone will demonstrate how converters can expand their business beyond labels, often using the same equipment. This all makes Labelexpo Europe an absolutely unmissable event.”

The machine is equipped with anilox and print cylinder sleeves along with chamber doctor blade system that enables short set up and job changes. The granite based machine has a UV dryer that generates no exhaust air, making printing noiseless and odourless. The ECS340 boasts of a movable operator panel with self-explanatory HMI design for intuitive operation of the press. The presetting function and print pressure adjustments enables short setup and involves minimum wastage. The granite based design reduces Co2 emission, while the fully water cooled and energy optimised

systems add to the efficiency of the machine. The machine specifications include a 40 inch unwind unit, web guide with splice table, servo infeed, UV flexo (UV), WB flexo (hot air), Die stations, Movable matrix rewinder etc..

Digital will become an inevitable factor in the future, though it will not replace UV flexo technology

Flexo is here to stay

Kimoha believes with the advent of flexo technology this popular printing process is here to stay however they are open to innovations and new technology. With digital machines crowding the label and packaging market, Wolfram Grüning opined that though there is a shift towards digital, digital technology will not take over flexo. He explained that digital will become an inevitable factor in the future, though it will not replace UV flexo technologies. “Kimoha will be participating in the upcoming Label Expo Europe and we will be exploring the latest technologies in offer,” added Wolfram. Kimoha’s range of products include different types of paper rolls, CAD applications, communication rolls for telex and fax machines, transaction rolls for point of sales applications and automatic teller machines, parking ticket machines etc. They also produce plain and printed labels and sleeves for a variety of applications such as packaging, logistics and for a wide range of auto identification products such as Avery, CAB, Motorola, RMI etc.

“We are one of the key players in the MENA region and we produce labels for industries like FMCG, Cosmetics, Health Care, Oil, Aviation etc. Our customer range is quite wide and includes customers like Henkel, Johnson & Johnson etc.,” added Bhimani. Talking about Kimoha’s presence in the aviation sector, he said that they currently produce baggage tags and boarding passes for more than 30 airlines, airports and ground handling service providers and cover a growing number of international customers in several countries around the world like Argentina, South East Asia, Indian Sub Continent, Thailand, and Singapore etc. Bhimani explained that they are equipped to do foiling, cold foil, lamination, high gloss varnishing, holograms etc and are upgrading their facilities

to offer the latest solutions in label. Observing the recent trends in substrates, Wolfram said, “If you look back, you can see that Middle East especially the Gulf region has steadily followed international trends, which indicates that the demand for film as a substrate is growing. Though paper is still used extensively, high gloss materials like films are in much demand. With international players like Henkel, Johnson & Johnson having a base here, international preferences reflect in the regional market. Mostly products intended for outdoor purpose use film as substrate as they have more longevity when compared with paper.”

Market Vows

ME Printer Aug - Sep 2011

Raising environment issues, Wolfram said that their focus is now on recycling as customer demand is for recyclable products like PP labels. Kimoha employs around 240 people, who are continuously trained by companies like Gallus, whenever there is a new technology on board. “Staff including our production manager, supervisors etc are trained internally and we keep our people informed and update them on the very latest technology in market,” added Wolfram On venturing into future markets, Bhimani opined that RFID is a closely looked upon area though they have not found a substantial market for RFID labels in the region. He also

35

Highlight The Gallus ECS 340 is equipped with anilox and print cylinder sleeves along with chamber doctor blade system that enables short set up and job changes

added that they have a specific quality control measure, while printing security related materials. Bhimani added, “With consumer markets being flexible nowadays, the demand for shorter runs has increased. If you see the length of runs, 10 years before there was a benchmark for the run lengths but today with the advent of digital presses you can print more jobs with less runs and there is no limitation in run lengths. This is very useful especially when you print repeat jobs.” Bhimani thinks that there is still space for growth in the label industry and there won’t be any price worries as far as label industry in Middle East is concerned. “Investment in the region is huge. Even if there are only three or four companies, the competition is tough in the region. Through our service and products, we want to make Kimoha customers, first choice,” says Bhimani. When asked about the recent upheavals in the region, Bhimani opined that with markets going global, issues have also become global.

“But Dubai is a safe place to do business, environmentally and politically.” An ISO 9001 certified company, Kimoha expects that the market for labels and packaging is definitely on the move. “Our spectacular success can certainly be attributed to our deep commitment to quality, a pragmatic approach of continuous investment in leading edge technology and our track record of deliveries on time. We have seen a growth of about 30 % in our gross revenues in the first quarter of this year. At this rate we are quite confident that we will cross our targets of 2011. The increase in our sales is the result of overall recovery in the regional economies despite political and social turbulence and sustained growth in the aviation sector in the Middle East and other emerging countries,” concluded Bhimani. Established in 1988, Kimoha started operations with the production of telex and fax rolls. The company started its first 1,200 sq.m facility in 1996

and launched a self adhesive label division. In 1999, Kimoha started an Auto Identification Division to complement core activities. In 2002, the company opened a 7,500 sq.m facility and in 2006 started manufacturing shrink sleeves. In 2008, the company further expanded its operations to produce baggage tags and boarding passes for the Aviation-Industry. With the new 20,000 sq m LEED compliant facility, Kimoha plans to further expand its production operations, to be prepared for its international growth.

The Great depression that preceded World War II left several changes in the world economy. Being now hit by the 21st century recession, markets are adapting and going through an image makeover to capture the consumer market. Demand for shorter runs, growing consumer market and increased environmental concerns have changed the face of label and narrow web press technology. Keeping this in mind, suppliers of narrow web press technology are now opting for more cost effective solutions without compromising on print quality. To track the new trends in narrow web press and flexible packaging, we asked leading manufacturers about their latest solutions and offerings for label printers and converters.

Mark Andy ratifies shorter runs, waste management and easy operating mechanism as success mantra

40

Winning the 2011 FTA Technical Innovation Award for its revolutionary Performance Series press technology, Mark Andy Inc. has forayed into delivering solutions to the label and packaging market for over sixty years. Based in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, Mark Andy manufactures leading brands like Comco. Mike Russell, Manager, International Sales, Mark Andy believes that flexo presses do have a market in the label industry. Talking on the recent breakthroughs in narrow web industry, he said that these trends are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. “With the latest pre press improvements, flexo quality is now good enough to compete directly with offset, so the next step will be to reduce the cost of production,” said Mike and added that more and more companies are using film labels and thinner substrates and liners to save material costs. He asserted that there is still room for reducing the cost of tooling (that includes printing plates,

dye cylinders and flexible dyes) Narrow web industry has seen changing trends; revealing the factors behind a successful narrow web press, Mike asserted that a quicker set up time, waste management during set up and run and an easy operating mechanism, which makes it easier to train flexo operators, determine the success of narrow web press. Talking on the after effects of recession on consumer and label trends, Mike said that, “Recession caused consumers to buy more Generic brand (store brand) goods against brand names. The generic brand goods seek better prices putting an emphasis on label printers’ efficiencies rather than on the graphics and quality of labels. Branded goods manufacturers’ must figure out how to reduce the cost and complexity of their labels without losing their brand image, to overcome this phase.” Increasing food prices had added pressure on the label and packaging industry opined Mike. He said that due to the rising price factor, the pressure is now on label printers, forcing them to hold the price rise, which is quite difficult as the price index is passed on from the self adhesive label stock suppliers. Against the backdrop of the

new economic realities, Mike says that, “The efficiencies of today’s flexo presses are bringing down the break even lot size, while comparing it with digital and even traditional flexo press styles. Only very few converters running labels on digital equipment are making money on conventional labels. The label converters, who are successful with digital technology, are finding a niche market that fits the business model of digital. With the buzz word being Green these days, Mike asserts that flexo is environment friendly and uses inks with low VOC’s (either UV or water based). He said that the main concern that affects the self adhesive label market is the waste inherent in the process (liner and matrix). Talking about the shift to shaftless technology in narrow web presses, Mike added, “In our industry it is more what we can do with electronics and usually this means servo motors. There are great servo implementations in narrow web booth and with and without line shafts and the right machine for a converter really depends on the applications they intend to run.” Mike added that Mark Andy offers both servo and non-servo driven presses that accommodates a wide variety of applications run by convert-

ers worldwide. Mike voices the opinion that emerging markets like Asia and the Middle East will be the areas that will show the largest growth rate in Label Consumption in the long term. “However right now, it is a matter of planting the seeds for the future. Companies like Mark Andy have been investing in Asia for over 20 years and are just now seeing some converters switch from the letterpress technology, which was unique to the region. As regards the

Middle East, it is not dependent on letterpress, so I think as label consumption goes so will narrow web flexo,” opined Mike. Regarding the installations in Middle East, he said that they have been selling into the Middle East for many years and have developed a significant market share in the region. “Mark Andy has built a strong network of distributors in the area, who provide exemplary service and support for our in-

stallations and valued customers. We rely on their expertise in the market and knowledge of the customer base to continue the success we have enjoyed in the region.” On their plans for Drupa, Mike briefed that, “Drupa is not as large a venue for press manufacturers as the target audience is quite diluted across a variety of interests. We prefer to put our marketing money into events more strategically focused toward the label industry.”

Rotatek views less outer packaging and high quality as new trends stressed that by using a 4 colour process in wet offset with one PMS or Pantone colour, so eventually using 5 units they were able to deliver a much higher and stable quality in an extremely cost effective set up. “We used our latest press, the BRAVA Semi rotary offset press, which was introduced at the GRAPHISPAG exhibition in Barcelona on March 2011.” Rotatek had delivered their first shaftless technology 12 years ago and they use both shaftless and mechanical drives depending on specification requirements and customer request. Creativity in marketing campaigns and innovative designs would be the factors that would affect the consumer and label market, observes Gaëtan. “The market trend is towards smaller quantities and renewed designs. So, printers now have to offer flexibility in printing. With recession and the new economic realities, the market is re-enforcing the value addition supplied by the wet offset technology in narrow web because the offset printers can sell the labels directly whereas the flexo printers must sell the pre press set up first because of the polymer cost.” Increase in food prices has made most of the brand owners to reduce the substrate cost and increase print quality,

opined Gaëtan. “We see that less outer packaging and more quality on the direct label is the new requirement of the packaging and label market.” According to him digital solutions will make the market change, though he still believes that with the right piece of equipment, traditional offset is still the margin maker for label printers. Addressing environmental concerns, he said

ME Printer Aug - Sep 2011

Rotatek, S.A positioned in Barcelona, Spain are manufacturers of offset, flexo and combined narrow web rotary and semi-rotary presses that prints labels, flexible packaging, folding cartons, sleeves, mailings etc. With an experience of 30 plus years in this field, its main activity is to develop offset and flexo technologies for the printing industry. Gaëtan de Charry, VP, Sales, Rotatek SA talking on the latest trends in the narrow web press asserted that most of their customers prefer shorter runs and high quality as they want to avoid the competition in the lower margin market for big volumes. Gaëtan thinks that the real breakthrough in narrow web industry will be in developing a different market strategy that will address the weak points of general label market. He commented, “For this reason, we have developed new solutions in partnership with our existing customers. The major concern here is the high cost of consumables used in flexo presses. This includes the cost of polymer plates, anilox cylinders, magnetic cylinders and also the fact that in order to achieve the high quality standard in flexo, most of the printers are using 7 or more units.” Talking about a cost effective alternative, Gaëtan

41

that Rotatek has developed an internal quality control team dedicated to study environment concerns. “We call it the Environment Concern Expertise Committee (2 E’s). At this stage the focus of the team is mainly on: 1) Reducing paper wastage, this means that we have developed a much faster and very unique

auto register system with a complete auto set up mode. Also the web path has been reduced by 38 per cent. 2) Reducing ink consumption with a new offset unit design, with a much more controlled ink flow. Needless to say that offset process is spending not more than 0.8 gsm of ink per sq.m, while flexo spends approximately 3 or 4 times more. 3) Power consumption of the full BRAVA press is reduced by 50 per cent compared to other presses by using a new generation shaftless transmission with low consumption drives. At the same time, we have implemented a new low consumption UV dryer with higher efficiency, 50 per cent lower power consumption and a timeless pre heating,” added Gaëtan. Rotatek had based their presence in the emerging markets in the Middle East since 1987, in China since 1990 and in India since 1995. Gaëtan opined that

high quality label is a global motto worldwide and to be a leader the products must display topmost creativity and service to the customers. “This is the way we create long time partnerships, so that we have repeat orders from the same players,” he added. With a strong presence in the Middle East, Rotatek has delivered and installed approximately 50 presses in the region and recently installed 2 presses in Dubai. There was also an installation in Amman, Jordan recently. With the bells ringing to announce drupa 2012, Rotatek an active participant to the print event since the last 40 years, thinks that 2012 will be an important year for them. Gaëtan adds, “drupa 2012 will the meeting point of Rotatek community. We will showcase new developments, demo shows and of course the focus will remain on brand protection and security printing for labels and packaging segments.”

Müller Martini spots variable size offset printing as upcoming trend

42

Müller Martini headquartered in Switzerland manufactures and deals a wide range of print finishing systems and web offset printing solutions. Their products range from narrow web offset printing presses, press delivery systems, saddle stitchers, perfect binders, hardcover systems, newspaper mailroom systems to digital on-demand book production. Bruno Müller, CEO of Müller Martini opines that with the growing pressure on cost and time in the graphic arts industry, the demand for the quality of end products are on the rise. Regarding the trends in the narrow web press and label market, he believes that variable size web offset printing is an upcoming trend and the rapidly developing technology will increase its share in the flexible packaging market. “The producers of printing inks are playing a key role in this process and have

recently made great strides in developing appropriate UV and EB inking systems. Today, the web offset printing method is used to print on substrates that two years ago were considered as non-processable.” Web offset has become a useful supplement, particularly for the range of small and medium print runs, where printing plate costs and response times play a key role today. Müller Martini launched with the VSOP (Variable Sleeve Offset Printing) a web offset printing press which uses all these strengths of offset printing in one printing press. Talking more about the VSOP (Variable Sleeve Offset Printing) technology Bruno Müller said, “We are investing in solutions that will provide our customers with new business opportunities in flexible and cardboard packaging.” Offset printing technology has many advantages that are especially

relevant for small and medium size runs, which includes a highly standardised printing process as well as the short time taken to market during plate making and low plate costs. As with the VSOP standard offset printing plates are used, costs are significantly reduced compared to the costs of other printing processes, such as flexo or gravure printing. Label and Packaging market today demands for smaller print runs, shorter lead times, good flexibility and competitive prices. Müller Martini claims that the plate and rubber blanket cylinders in the VSOP printing unit are designed as handy sleeves, so print sizes can be changed easily without having to exchange the entire printing inserts. “This process is not only quick and simple but it is also exceptionally cost effective for print lengths that change frequently.” This means also, added Bruno Müller, that the VSOP printing unit is infinitely variable for all print image lengths. A job and size change can be completed

in a matter of minutes. Furthermore, the sleeve change can be carried out without tools and on the operating side, so it ensures a high level of user-friendliness. Talking on environmental issues, he said, “Automation systems, which Müller Martini has been using in its machines for years, increase the machines’ efficiency rate: they use the acquired energy intelligently and efficiently, thus resulting in lower power consumption. And thanks to the highly accurate processes at the start of

production, there is virtually no production waste and savings are also made on raw materials – this is vital, even on small print runs.” He concludes that a great deal of variable size web offset printing does now indeed meet the requirements for printing packaging. These include very low cost printing methods, their rapid manufacture, a high level of standardisation, avoiding high levels of VOCs (Volatile organic compounds) and short machine make-ready times.

Nilpeter urges for improved efficiency and replacement of outdated production equipment highly sophisticated machines to satisfy the highest level of customer freedom in design and brand protection.” Jacob Landberg opined that a perfect solution to alter the industry’s low sustainability and environmental image will be the real breakthrough in a narrow web industry. “This would go across the whole value chain and beef up our appearance in the surrounding end-user areas. Low-migration inks, low energy UV systems, Inkjet technology and combination printing also help us to remain on the innovative side.” He maintains that with recession taking its toll on the economy, the focus on efficiency has become even stronger, which he considers as a positive sign for the market. Talking on the impact of rising

ME Printer June 2009

Nilpeter, headquartered at Denmark manufactures roll label printing solutions. The company develops modularly designed presses that provide combinations of flexographic, letterpress, screen, hot foil and offset printing processes. Nilpeter also offers digital printing solutions. Jacob Landberg, Sales & Marketing Director, Nilpeter commenting on the recent rends in narrow web press and label market said, “The industry is recovering from the recession phase. Few have invested during the financial hunger period and there is a need for improved efficiency and replacement of outdated production equipment. The machine trends are still focused on shortest setup time and less wastage but the large players invest in

43

food prices on the packaging and label industry, he said, “I think, higher prices or values of end-user products has both good and bad effects. The bad effect is the focus on costs that could push labels to become a commodity, while the good one is that with higher cost, end-users must raise the image of their products, which will automatically increase the quality demands of labels and packaging. Jacob analysed that with the new economic realities, the digital push will be around in the market for 10 years or more. “Digital solutions have taken approximately 20 % of the label printing market but it will never take over the entire segment. Our industry likes both options, both digital and conventional.” Explaining the addressability of Nilpeter in environmental issues, he said, “Over the past 15 years, we have through design lowered the waste and set up time. We consider this as the most important way to save environment from our side.” Jacob addressed that the shift to shaftless technology is

a bygone process for them and all of their high end presses are shaftless to a certain extent. Regarding the future of emerging markets in label industry, he opined, “I fully agree that the future growth of our industry belongs to the ‘new world’ but it is based on the experience of the first movers from the old world. We have to encourage alliances and partnerships in our label community to ensure readiness for

the future.” He further said that Nilpeter introduced Nilpeter Middle East two years ago and the opening has given them a boost in their confidence level for the region. He added that they have done many installations in the region and are planning for more. Expressing his view on drupa 2012, he concluded, “We are not focussed on the general print world that drupa represents, we are a ‘label expo’ believer.”

Gallus draws attention to improved efficiency

44

The Swiss based Gallus Group; manufacturers of label printing machines, inline printing and processing systems provide solutions for label, folding carton and screen printing. Peter Waldburger, Area Sales Manager of Gallus opines that all factors which improve efficiency in narrow web and label market will gain more importance. “Factors like set-up time, waste reduction, energy consumption and output will be of prior importance. Since years, Gallus have set its focus on these factors and we have been developing innovative and cost-effective solutions for label printers.” Waldburger states that the real breakthrough in narrow web industry would be evolutionary rather than revolutionary. “Gallus is observing the label market and sees improvement

in each field of the industry like, in the degree of automation, thin substrates, low migration inks etc.” On the effects of recession, Waldburger responds, “Gallus was not affected by recession, though of course, we have strengthened cost optimisation and productivity as a precautionary measure. With Gallus machines, our customers are equipped to follow these ongoing trends.” Stating that the new economic realities won’t encourage label printers to opt for digital solutions, Waldburger reasons that, “The method of printing is not dependent on economic realities; it rather depends on the needed applications. It’s well known within the label industry that conventional printing is still the most cost-effective method of label printing for

most of the applications.” Addressing environmental concerns, Waldburger mentioned, “Gallus is committed to sustainability and takes its economic, social and environment responsibilities very seriously, giving all three aspects equal weight and increasing our customers’ competitiveness in a truly unique way. As a company and as an individual, Gallus and its employees work to satisfy the present generation’s expectations without jeopardising the existence of future generations. Gallus has won many certifications like ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 along with many international awards. The latest machine, Gallus ECS 340 saves 10 tons of paper waste per year compared to other machines, adding credibility to its eco-friendly approach.” Believing in the future of emerging markets, Gallus is following the trends and opening new branches all over the world to extend its global network. “Gallus believes in people who would like to be successful and are focused on

productivity and security of the printing process.” On the shift to shaftless technology, Waldburger explained that Gallus was the first company within the label industry to shift to shaftless technology, back in 1995. “Nowadays Gallus is seen as a standard and we are already working on the next generation of drive systems.” Detailing their exhibition plans for drupa 2012, Waldburger

added that Gallus will take part with its business unit, Folding Carton along with some innovations from the inline machine systems. With more than 25 installations in the Middle East, Gallus has a strong presence in the region. “We are delighted with our business growth in the Middle East, which has a solid tradition and is bound to grow, thanks to our local market presence.”

Infocus Label Market

Escalating Heights:

Middle East label Market

ME Printer Aug - Sep 2011

Dr. George Nubar Simonian points out the reasons for the growing demand of narrow web presses in the region

46

The popularity of narrow web presses are on a surge, with more and more narrow web converters opting to print labels with these machines. Depending upon the printing technology used, narrow web can be broadly classified as flexo, offset, gravure, digital, screen etc. They can print from roll to roll, roll to sheet and roll to fanfold and can combine different finishing processes such as creasing, embossing, perforation, cutting, lamination, coating etc. The state-of-theart presses are able to perform printing and complex finishing in one pass. Narrow web machines take benefit from their flexible design, which makes it possible to build them based on the demands and requirements of

customers and markets. They can be easily integrated with modern technology and can be offered with various configurations for different applications. Narrow web presses can print on a wide variety of substrates such as cards, self adhesive labels, polymers, plastics, cardboards, paper etc, and even can print and coat recto verso on some of these. Detailing more on narrow web machines, Dr. Magdy Ezzat, from the Department of Printing, Publishing and Packaging, Helwan University, Egypt says that narrow web machines generate less waste due to the size of the substrate used and also because of the combined printing and finishing processes. He added that since narrow web machines use UV

inks and are equipped with UV curing units that dry the ink instantaneously, they eliminate set off problems. Narrow web machines are mainly used by industries that rely on packaging at the store level. These include food labels, beverage labels, medicine containers and labels, cosmetics and beauty product labels. Today label plays a vital and influential role in the global economy and acts as a medium to provide: - (as mentioned by Gallus): Marketing- Attractive designs and colours help to market the product, giving it a sales lead over other products Information and communication- Helps to deliver product information to customers and users.

Security – Labels ensures security of product and prevents fraud or counterfeiting. Transportation and logistics - Labels that include RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags help to track products during transportation and maintains a check on them. Products longevity – Helps to prolong the shelf life of products by protecting against factors like light, heat, etc. Narrow web presses and their applications are growing in the Middle East region. According to PIRA, the label market in the region has increased from about 150 million US dollars in 2000 to USD 225 million in 2009 and the figure is expected to increase to USD 340 million by 2015. Companies like Gallus, Mark Andy, and Nilpeter etc have a foothold in the region. Though letterpress technology still prevails here, flexo is gaining popularity especially due to its UV curable inks that dries instantly. Also the success of digital printing technology have led major companies like AGFA, HP, Epson, Xeikon etc to enter this arena and a lot of inkjet machines are expected to

mushroom in the Middle East region. Commenting on the growth of narrow web press in Egypt, Eng. Mona Sophie, Web Sales Manager at Youssef Allam & Co., Egypt says that the market for narrow web press is growing rapidly and the most popular machines here are Gallus (especially R160, 180 and 200 models), Mark Andy, Nilpeter and MPS. Explaining the development of major label printing companies such as Matco, Wektac, Pacman, Fastick and their inroads into narrow web press printing, she says that the major hurdle faced by the industry in Egypt and Middle East is the lack of skilled work force. She points out that, technicians here in the Middle East are comfortable with the more widespread offset and they lack the knowledge of how to operate multiple printing and finishing technologies in a single press. She said that operating narrow web machines require additional printing and finishing skills and know-how and to prepare operators to handle complex narrow web presses, training programs must be

designed and held in colleges, institutes and specialised training centres.

Egyptian companies eye label market Staying in the race, Egypt is also well equipped with the latest range of narrow web presses. The latest entrant in the Egypt market is a servo driven Gallus EM 510 web press, with the maximum printing width of 51cm. The machine is the latest investment of PIWI Company in Port Said, Egypt. Recently, Pacman-CCL in Egypt also invested in a third UV flexo press from MPS. The machine is used for printing self adhesive labels, shrinks labels, cut and stack, booklet and promotional labels etc. The company’s biggest international customers include Coca Cola, Pepsi, and Heinz etc. Porta Egypt, a subsidiary of Altea Packaging group acquired a DCM high speed forming and sealing machine for the production of shrink sleeves. The machine is equipped with a non stop rewinder and is able to produce 400m/minute sleeve labels. The company produces about 400 tons of labels per year and through its branches, Porta, Rotopack and Cogitel exports to many regional and African countries such as, Tunisia, Algeria, and Senegal etc.

Future points to inkjet

ME Printer Aug - Sep 2011

Based on researches and new breakthroughs in narrow web presses, Inkjet digital printing technology will play a major part of the narrow web label printing industry. The benefits of Inkjet technology are many: UV technology, short run variable data printing, capacity to print on a wide range of substrates, modular design, inline finishing and the list goes on. Narrow web machines have a huge potential to grow and has a bright future in the Middle East, provided companies are equipped with trained hands to meet the changing demands.
