Flagship Sailing On The Ocean

The Flagship Sports and Social Club at Sandals Montego Bay recently whisked away some of their members for an evening of adventure and unforgettable moments aboard an Island Routes catamaran. Laughter and all the latest and greatest dancehall tunes filled the air, mingling with the salty breeze as partygoers gathered below deck to gyrate to the DJ’s beat and the rhythm of the waves beneath their feet. Those with a penchant for the finer things sauntered on deck, clinking glasses of liquid libations in celebration. All this happened as sunset painted the sky in hues of orange and pink and colourful neon lights danced across the surface of the water, casting a magical glow. From the sleek Cat’s deck, club members could take a much-needed breather while taking in the magnificent vistas of Montego Bay’s exquisite coastline.

Sandals Trains In Preparation For The Future Caribbean students graduate with Diploma in Hospitality Leadership

In keeping with Sandals Resorts’ mandate to train and develop 400 managers in the next three years, The Sandals Corporate University (SCU) has added another sixteen managers to its growing list of graduates in the Diploma in Hospitality Leadership Programme. The leadership initiative, a partnership with the SCU, Florida International University (FIU) and Accelerating Leaders hosted its second graduation ceremony, at Sandals Barbados which was attended by members of the SCU team, Sandals and Beaches Executives, representatives of FIU and Accelerating Leaders and well-wishers of the graduates.

In his greeting, Dr. Michael Cheng, dean of the Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism expressed his joy in celebrating with the team members. He shared, “all of you embody the spirit of service, innovation and community that is embedded into the DNA of Sandals Resorts International. You’ve demonstrated that true leadership is about more than just guiding others. It’s about inspiring them, lifting them up, and striving for excellence in every endeavour. As you move forward from today, remember that the skills and knowledge you’ve acquired are tools not just for personal success, but for making a difference in the world. The hospitality industry, with its endless challenges and opportunities, awaits your contribution. You are the future of this industry, and we have every confidence that you will lead with integrity, creativity, and compassion.”

Managing Director for Sandals Resorts International,

Melissa Migliavacca, valedictorian, gave a riveting address on behalf of her colleagues. She encouraged them to return to their resorts and impart what they have learnt to empower their various team

Stephen Blackburne, in his keynote address expressed how impressed he was with the graduates for taking a very calculated approach to their future with the organization. He said, “waiting to be asked is a passive approach. Instead continue to be intentional and proactive in shaping your future and making a meaningful impact wherever you go. I urge you to embrace this moment with pride and excitement. You are not just graduates, you are ambassadors of excellence, emissaries of change and architects of the future.”

Students for cohort B were recruited from Sandals Resorts across St. Lucia, Antigua, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Barbados and Grenada. Cohorts C and D will commence in April and May respectively, and the SCU anticipates that by the end of 2024, five cohorts will

The Diploma in Hospitality Leadership Programme is offered by SCU in partnership with Accelerating Leaders and the Florida International University

Sandals Grenada’s Spa Manager, and valedictorian for Cohort B Melissa Migliavacca, took the time in her address to motivate her colleagues as they look

towards the future. She said passionately, “it took discipline, dedication and focus as well as effective time management for us to follow through. There were times that we stumbled upon obstacles but giving up was not an option. Lisa Nichols says that in this life we can choose to be a victim or a victor, the choice is always ours. I’m so glad we’re all standing victorious today because we made the choice to be brave and sign up for this programme and we saw it through to the end.” She concluded by encouraging her colleagues to pay it forward when they return to their operations by helping train team members and cultivating a standard of excellence.

The Diploma in Hospitality Leadership Programme is a six-month long interactive course leveraging workshops, discussion groups, case studies and industry best-practices. HILROY MIGHTY

Two Decades of Purpose and Passion for People

For over two decades, Hilroy Mighty has been an invaluable asset to Sandals Resorts, bringing his dedication, expertise, and passion to every role he’s held. Currently serving as a concierge supervisor at Beaches Negril Resort and Spa, Mighty stands as a beacon of excellence in hospitality, embodying the values that have made Sandals Resorts synonymous with luxury and exceptional service.

But what inspires his dedication and commitment to his duties and the Resort at large? According to him, it is simply the investment that Sandals and Beaches Resorts continue to make in their team members.

“It is a company that is always opening doors for people and that’s why I have stayed with them,” Mighty said.

“From an early stage in my relationship with the company I found that it is not just is interested in making money. It is also interested in helping people. I have seen so many people start as a trainee and develop into managers and supervisors over all the years that I have been working with them,” he continued.

Throughout his 21-year journey with Beaches Resorts, Mighty has consistently demonstrated his commitment to personal and professional growth. Starting from humble beginnings, he has risen through the ranks, acquiring a wealth of experience and knowledge along the way.

“I started as a laundry attendant and over the years I have transitioned to so many different areas and

positions. I have moved from being a room attendant to being a houseman and from there I went on to working in the lobby because they realized that I was very good with the guests. They liked talking to me so I developed a relationship with the guests and they spoke about me all the time. Then from there I became a bellman,” Mighty shared.

This took place at what was previously known as Beaches Sandy Bay. He then left the resort after 10 years of service to travel overseas. But quickly

returned to the company that has his heart. Upon his return, he worked as a lobby host, then as front desk agent and a night auditor for a short while before joining the elite concierge team and then being promoted to a concierge supervisor.

In his current capacity, Mighty takes great pride in ensuring that guests experience the utmost comfort and satisfaction during their stay at Beaches Negril. His attention to detail, coupled with his genuine warmth and hospitality, leaves a lasting impression on guests, who often praise his impeccable service and willingness to go above and beyond to meet their needs.

One of his most notable qualities is his ability to cultivate meaningful relationships with both guests and colleagues alike. Affectionately called ‘Mighty Man’ by his team members on resort, his approachable demeanor and genuine interest in people allow him to connect on a personal level, fostering a sense of trust and loyalty that is invaluable in the hospitality industry.

Even as he reflects on all the changes that have taken place across the decades, the most outstanding, according him, is how team members are able to have a voice in how they are treated on resort.

“I have seen a lot of expansion and upgrades to the properties ad it is all beautiful and welcomed. However, I remember when they began to allow team members to plead their case when it comes onto disciplinary actions on resort. When they introduced the team member hearings I remember saying to myself ‘wow, this company really values the voice of the employees’,” he explained.

Beyond his day-to-day responsibilities, Mighty can sometimes be seen in the food and beverage areas, chipping in to alleviate the demands on his fellow team members. As a former bakery, he says this helps to keep his passion for the kitchen alive.

As he reflects on his journey with Sandals Resorts, Mighty remains grateful for the opportunities he’s been given and the relationships he’s built along the way. His unwavering dedication and passion for hospitality continue to set him apart, making him a true asset to Beaches Negril and the broader Sandals Resorts family. With each passing year, Mighty’s legacy grows stronger, leaving an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to cross his path. But for those who will not get to see ‘Mighty Man’ in action, he sends words of encouragement.

“Here at Beaches and at all Sandals properties, the stars are the limit. There are opportunities after opportunities to support professional and personal development within this company and it is just for you to grab hold of them. I am testament of that and I am proud to be a member of the family.”

On March 20th, our resort’s Photoshop team, Epix, hosted its first-ever debate competition, tackling the topic “Is Jamaican culture alive in the Sandals resorts?” It was an exhilarating event that stirred passionate arguments from both sides. Team Cool Runnings, tasked with defending the notion, delivered compelling points that resonated with the audience, ultimately securing victory by just half a point! Their spirited defense of the theme left a lasting impression, highlighting the vibrancy and richness of Jamaican culture within our resort.

In contrast, Team Impossible, tasked with opposing the notion, faced a daunting challenge. Despite their valiant efforts, they were unable to sway the audience or the judges with their arguments. The defeat served as a testament to the pervasive presence of Jamaican culture throughout our Sandals resorts, as affirmed by Team Cool Runnings’ triumphant victory.

Reflecting on the competition, Epix manager Saminto Clarke-Keene remarked, “The debate competition was not only an opportunity to showcase our team’s debating skills but also to delve into important themes surrounding our resort’s cultural identity. Team Cool Runnings’ win underscores the deep-rooted influence of Jamaican culture within our Sandals resorts.”

As Epix continues to foster creativity and excellence within our Photoshop department, events like this serve as a reminder of the importance of cultural appreciation and understanding within our resort community. With their remarkable skills and insightful debates, Epix continues to captivate and inspire us all.

Being Pregnant with my little Prince

When I first found out about my pregnancy, I was in complete shock. I had mixed emotions from that day onwards. Giving birth to a child is one of life’s most intense experiences. During my first trimester, I was so sick with nausea, loss of appetite and fatigue. There were days I would have to call out of work. However, the second and third weren’t as bad and that’s when I started to feel like myself again. When the month of February started, I was on edge because that was the month I had to deliver. The contractions were terrible but the delivery was quite easy compared to that. On February 19th, 2024, I gave birth to my handsome prince Xavior. My life changed from that moment but it’s complete.
