Beaches Exuma Set To Delight Families With Grand Debut

Sandals Resorts International Expanding

Beaches®

Resorts Brand Into The Bahamas

Sandals Resorts International (SRI) has announced its acceleration of plans to expand the family-friendly Beaches Resorts brand with the development of Beaches Exuma, its fourth resort, and the first Beaches in The Bahamas. To make this new resort possible and as part of a coordinated growth plan across the Sandals and Beaches Resorts portfolio, Sandals Emerald Bay will close on August 15, 2024, and undergo a transformation that is anticipated to begin in Fall 2024 before reopening as the new Beaches Exuma.

“Exuma was made for families and with more than 6,000 feet of shoreline, the new Beaches Exuma will be a gateway to discovering the incomparable beauty of this part of The Bahamas,” stated Adam Stewart, Executive Chairman of Sandals Resorts International. “At the core of every great family vacation is the creation of memories so magical they last a lifetime. For more than two decades, I’ve cherished every moment I’ve spent together with my family along the lively shores of Exuma, where my own children have grown up among one of nature’s most inspiring playgrounds — from swimming pigs, majestic sea turtles, sandbars and so much more,” Stewart continued

Originally developed as a family-oriented resort when it opened over two decades ago, the existing Sandals property maintains an ideal layout of beaches, pools, and areas for family-oriented play spaces and amenities across its expansive oceanfront acreage. Exuma is also a natural wonder renowned for its marine ecosystems and sea life, crystal clear waters, and beaches offering expansive white sandbars for exploration. The transformation will bring the full breadth of the Beaches Resorts experiences and amenities that families have come to love. The new Beaches Exuma will include an evolved configuration of rooms with multi-bedroom villas, suites and connecting rooms, as well as undergo upgrades to its 12 restaurants and culinary offerings, the development of an all-new Kids

Camp, splash deck, and much more, while tapping into entirely new adventure opportunities for families. When it opens, the new Beaches Exuma will offer a premier experience while also retaining beloved amenities such as the full-service Red Lane Spa and access to the Greg Norman designed 18-hole Emerald Bay golf course.

The Bahamas’ Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism and Aviation, the Hon. I. Chester Cooper, welcomed the expansion and said he is greatly anticipating the redevelopment of the property.

“Sandals has been a trusted partner with The Bahamas for many years,” said Cooper, who is also from Exuma and is the parliamentary representative for the area.

“As we saw with the redevelopment of Sandals Royal Bahamian on New Providence nearly three years ago, when they invest in a property it flourishes. We will miss the Sandals Emerald Bay, but we welcome Beaches Exuma, which will be an expanded endeavor that caters to more visitors and employs more Bahamians. Exuma is my home and I’ll be with her every step of this journey,” Cooper added.

This rebranding is part of a strategic plan for the Sandals Resorts International organization to significantly expand its footprint across the Caribbean, including recently welcoming Sandals Dunn’s River in Jamaica, Sandals Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Sandals Royal Curaçao into its family of resorts. These three new Sandals Resorts, alongside expansions and upgrades to several other resorts throughout the Caribbean, provide a wide variety of new opportunities to experience the brand’s true all-inclusive hospitality. Valued guests with affected reservations at Sandals Emerald Bay are being contacted and provided with a variety of options for rebooking at another Sandals Resorts destination along with several special benefits.

MASTERED IT!

Vilma Smith’s Story of Passion to Purpose

In a world increasingly attuned to the urgency of environmental conservation, Vilma Smith, the Environment, Health, and Safety Manager at Sandals South Coast, stands out as a beacon of commitment and resilience. With over 39 years in the tourism industry, she has spent the last 20 years turning her passion for the environment into purpose at the picturesque South Coast.

Although Vilma had many career aspirations—ranging from teaching to nursing, and even law—she always knew that working in the tourism industry was her true calling. She fondly recalls her first introduction to the field during her studies in Home Economics at the Elim School of Agriculture.

Vilma had always envisioned herself working with Sandals Resorts, making multiple attempts to join the brand. Her persistence paid off when she was offered the position of Administrative Assistant to the Security Manager when the resort opened in 2005.

“I was working with the logistics team, ensuring everything was ready and up to standard for the resort’s opening. Afterward, a friend called to ask about my plans and told me about the opportunity at Sandals South Coast (formerly Sandals Whitehouse),” Vilma shared.

Proving to be a valuable asset, Vilma was quickly promoted after just five months to the Engineering Department as the Administrative Assistant to the Chief Engineer. In a department where she was the only female, Vilma asserted herself, earning the respect of her colleagues.

The next five years in the engineering department unknowingly prepared her for a lifelong passion she would pass on to the Sandals South Coast team and beyond. Vilma continued to rise through the ranks, eventually becoming the Executive Administrator to the Hotel Manager. However, her time in this role was short-lived when the opportunity to transition to Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Coordinator arose in 2005.

“This transition was sudden, but my experience in engineering and handling EHS documents gave me valuable insight. I also spent significant time with the previous EHS Manager before her departure. Though it was a new territory, I was eager to explore it and gain field experience. It wasn’t easy, but I was determined to achieve my goals,” Vilma explained.

Over the past 19 years at Sandals South Coast, Vilma has elevated the EHS department, curating an Earth Guardian team that shares her passion. She has led successful projects both on and off the resort. One of her most memorable moments was the first turtle release initiative at the resort, which attracted the attention of guests, community members along Jamaica’s South Coast, and the media.

Recently, thanks to Vilma’s dedication and the support of her Sandals South Coast team, the resort was awarded the prestigious Master

Certification from EarthCheck, the highest level any institution can attain.

Discovering an unexpected yet profound calling in environmental advocacy, Vilma embraced this new direction with unwavering dedication and an unshakeable belief in her capabilities, transforming her

THE BUZZ

Crop Over brings the buzz!

Sandals Barbados recently brought the vibrancy and spirit of the island’s Crop Over Festival directly to the resort, ensuring that both guests and staff experienced the full essence of the season.

The festivities began with "Splash! The Ultimate Sandals J’ouvert Experience," where guests, led by the Entertainment team, participated in a lively ‘jump’ across the resort, complete with rum stops.

The celebrations continued with "Fantastic Friday," where team members enjoyed food, drinks, and prizes, along with performances by some of Crop Over’s top artistes, including Brucelee Almightee, the 2024 Tune of the Crop and People’s Monarch winner.

Sandals Barbados duo to compete at World Obstacle Championships

Two outstanding Sandals Barbados team members were recently selected to represent the island at the World Obstacle Championships in Costa Rica from August 22-25 this year. Steward Dario Weekes, who won the local qualifying event, was followed by Security Supervisor Ron Hinds in second place. Both competitors are thrilled with their accomplishments and are eager to take it further.

“This is what I have been training for over the last three years, and I’m happy to have won. My main focus now is to represent my country on the international stage,” said Weekes.

The Barbados Adventure Race (BAR) is a fun yet demanding series of challenging race events on the stunning island of Barbados. The

winners of the local race earn the opportunity to represent their country at the World Obstacle Championships. This year, the local race was held at Peg Farms in St. John.

“It was a race where you have to overcome obstacles, for example, monkey bars, swinging from rings, taking and carrying sandbags with stones, and so on. The first person to complete this race, having successfully overcome all the obstacles in the fastest time, is the winner,” said a proud Weekes.

Hinds credits his performance to the hard work he put in and the faith he had in himself after competing for the fifth time.

“What I love about these games is that they test me mentally, so I am

prepared for anything that may try to break me. I like the challenge and the fight. I see myself going forward doing positive things in this area of the competition, and it will be a joy to represent my country.”

The Sandals duo also thanked the company for allowing them to train when needed and for the support of their various managers.

“We trained seven days a week, so it took some compromise with management, but they understood we were serious, and our rosters were flexible to balance work and personal time. Whether it be taking an early morning jog or a late evening run, we were committed, and it paid off. Now we prepare for Costa Rica, which will be a different environment as it has higher altitudes.”

At Beaches Ocho Rios, we are thrilled to share the joyous news of Naedine Stewart’s newest chapter in life. Our 24-year-old Dining Room team member recently welcomed her first child – a beautiful baby girl named Amira Thompson. Weighing a healthy 8 pounds at birth, Amira has already become the little princess of her family. Naedine chose the name "Amira," which fittingly means "Princess."

Naedine was surrounded by love during this lifechanging moment, with Kemar, her devoted partner, right by her side. The two are overjoyed as they navigate parenthood together, their hearts full of love for their baby girl.

Living with her parents in the serene hills of Hamilton Mountain, St. Ann, Naedine finds comfort and joy in the simple moments with her family. “When I get home at night, seeing my mom and my princess cuddled up and sleeping brings me so much happiness,” she shares. “Amira is my world. Everything I do is for her. She’s always smiling and a great eater—just like her dad says I was!”

They’ve all become aunties and uncles to Amira, and I’m so thankful.”

Amira was christened at two months old, surrounded by the warmth of her extended family. Naedine’s parents, who are active in their church, proudly take their only granddaughter to Sunday service every week. They have embraced their new roles as doting grandparents and help care for Amira whenever Naedine is at work.

Naedine reflects on her pregnancy with gratitude for the incredible support she received from her colleagues at Beaches Ocho Rios. “My work family made sure I was well taken care of. My boss, Raymond, and my team ensured I ate properly and did not lift anything heavy.

Naedine’s life is filled with love and support, both at home and in her community. “We’re one big, happy family. The love and care everyone has shown Amira is priceless. I feel incredibly blessed to have such a wonderful circle around me who have welcomed my little princess with open arms.”

From all of us at Beaches Ocho Rios, congratulations to Naedine, Kemar and baby Amira! We are so happy to be part of your journey and cannot wait to watch your family grow.
