Three Team Members awarded Inaugural Gordon “Butch” Stewart Scholarship The Stewart family, Sandals Foundation and Sandals Resorts International, through its Sandals Corporate University, have awarded three team members with the inaugural Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart Tourism, Hospitality and Service Scholarship. The scholarship is open to team members across the Sandals and ATL Group, including the Jamaica Observer, Island Routes and Unique Vacations Limited’s Caribbean offices and was created to honour the company’s late Founder and Chairman, Gordon “Butch” Stewart, OJ, CD, Hon. LLD and fund team members’ pursuit of a Bachelor’s Degree in Tourism, Hospitality or a service-related discipline. Adam Stewart, Sandals’ Executive Chairman shared, “My dad always believed in sharing knowledge and even before we had a Sandals Corporate University or an ATL Academy, he was passionate about learning and development and about empowering people to become their best selves. She said, “I have been working in Management for the last 11 years and with the increasingly diverse culture at Sandals Resorts, a global outlook is needed in order to be a relevant and effective leader.” Especially thankful for the financial assistance after the uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, Thomas added, “I am overwhelmed with gratitude. Chairman of the selection panel for the awards, Vic Fernandes, who was the longest-serving CBU president, said his panel of adjudicators saw a body of national and international contribution at a high level from the inductee, which qualified him for their recommendation. The Honorable Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart was also hailed for his contribution to other media organizations, some at the level of their board, including the Express newspaper and Caribbean Communications Network ( CCN) in Trinidad and Tobago. A citation read in our late Chairmans’ honor also recognized him for the advertising support that his businesses gave to media in the region in more than half a dozen countries. Sandals Foundation hosts a series of COVID safe back-to-school treats in Negril schools With the new school year set to begin in a few weeks, close to 600 students in infant and primary schools benefited from back to school initiatives spearheaded by the Sandals Foundation, Sandals Negril and Beaches Negril. The annual event usually hosted at main community locations were done in schools across Westmoreland and Hanover; a move aimed at reducing the number of persons gathered in a designated space for any one event. All COVID-19 safety protocols were observed during the events. School packages were tailored based on the age of students and included school bags filled with notebooks, story books/novels, pencils, crayons, markers, highlighters, pens, erasers, glues and other art supplies, flash cards, construction papers, folder leaves, folders, rulers, sharpeners, calculators, pencil cases and toys. Jervene Simpson, Regional Public Relations Manager for Sandals and Beaches Negril shares that the distribution process was done in an orderly and safe manner, “we had a set distribution space in each school with volunteers issuing the supplies. Students and parents entered enter the distribution space in small groups to collect their supplies and refreshments before leaving. All attendees had to wear their

Badge of Honour for Ms Dawn Smith It has been a busy month at Sandals Royal Caribbean. The team has been going all out to exceed the expectation of our valued guests. But at Sandals Royal Caribbean, hard work never goes unnoticed. So while it has been busy, it is also safe to say that it has been a very rewarding month.
August 2021
The resort’s General Manager, Dawn Smith took the time to sit with some of her team members at the GM’s Power Lunch. Miss Smith is not one to miss out on these Wednesday afternoon sessions and the month of August was no different. At these luncheons she took the time to thank her team for their hard work and she also reassured them that they are a vital part of the operation. The energetic team members were quite delighted with some even openly expressing how grateful they were to sit, dine and engage their general manger in meaningful conversations.
14
And we did say it was a rewarding month right? Yes, it certainly was. As part of Jamaica’s Independence Day celebrations, The Government of Jamaica recognized our very own General Manager, Dawn Smith. She was awarded the Badge of Honour for Meritorious Service in Tourism and Community Service. Can you say, buzzy? Indeed, her contribution to the industry has been great and she continues to be impactful. We are super proud of this noble leader. Way to go, Miss Smith.

Sandals Montego Bay Managers Chill in the Blue Mountains
If there is one thing about the Sandals Montego Bay management team is that despite working hard, they always have time to let down their hair and have fun as a team. So after being among the first hotels opened after the onset of the Covid 19 pandemic, the team decided to have some much-needed fun and engage in team building exercises on the famous Blue Mountain range high above the madding crowd. The team biked down the mountains, swam in the river and enjoyed the waterfalls as well as sampled the fabled Blue Mountain coffee and jerk chicken and coffee rice. General Manager Carl Beviere was in his element cracking jokes and as usual being the life of the party. It was a spirited occasion at the end of which the managers opted for fried, steamed and brown stew fish washed down with Jamaican beverages. Everyone confessed that it was a most amazing

We find that once we explain them to our guests, it works. And I really feel good about having my team members empowered to talk to the guests about it.

Déj is my second child. I also have a son.
How does it feel to be a parent? It is one of the most beautiful experiences I have ever encountered. What was the birth experience like for you? It was very challenging. I was admitted to hospital for 6 days until I had my baby. I was dilating very slowly and stayed in labor for 14 long hours. The pain was so excruciating I couldn’t even sleep, but somehow we made it through with a natural birth. It was an out of this world experience. I am thankful for the team of nurses and doctors who attended to me. Once she was born I was out of the hospital the next day. What is your advice to expecting mothers? Nothing in life comes easily but if you take it step by step and pray, everything is possible. Déj is… just precious! I wouldn’t trade her for the world. So far she only says ‘Dada,’ and she loves smiling and giving kisses. What is your favourite thing to do with her? My favourite thing to do with her is to breastfeed her. It’s our quiet bonding time. How does your partner support you in this new phase?

Whether it’s to take a break from the fast pace life of their ongoing need to provide or just start a new chapter in their book of life We never see passed the beauty that we behold. It’s only when things get rough the story truly unfolds. Most everyone that comes to me is only because of vacation. Most come because they suffer from relationship constipation. We can say that it’s just for fun or just to relax in the sun. But what happen when you’re back home stressed with work and sleep deprived and the only time you smile is with a bottle of rum and wondering if you should end it all with the last shot from the barrel of ah ….hmm. But let’s bring some smiles, show some gum. It’s sick to constantly see me as only a destination. This is where we flip things around, let me give you some education. Of course I’m the best place to be. I may be beautiful but yet still you know nothing about me. I am sweet ... rich ... and full of culture. Outsiders gravitate towards me like a dead carcass surrounded by vultures. So let me stretch my stuff & show off my bangles. I am paradise because everyone wants to come to my beaches while in their sandals. Take a trip down the red lane & rejuvenate the broken heart. Now Imma break this down for you into just a few more parts. Because the only ones that will miss out are just the stubborn few., Foreigners? You think I’m talking to them? No my Caribbean people, I’m talking to you! If you think that others just love to see me because I’m beautiful then you’re oh so wrong, It’s because those who live in me fail to see what’s going on. What I’m saying is that my people have been ignorant living so long in, and around me that they fail to see how precious I am to the outside community I’m nothing without you who are a part of me, so it’s time to stop being so narrow-minded &

Sing the mantra vim, vigor & vitality. Don’t just work because of a salary. This was only meant for the ignorant few. But I guess none of us actually knew. That paradise isn’t really me, but it’s in all of you.
GM SPOTLIGHT
Note to Self Nickesha Greenfield RESORT SALES Manager Beaches Negril Hey you, don’t you know it’s time? It’s time to stop disappointing you. Don’t you know you are worth it? Words cannot say all the love and hurt I feel But it’s time to find the courage to step away From that which holds you back and holds you down It’s time to find the courage to let go of all those Oppressive words they speak No longer allow the naysayers to have power over your life Remember, you are worth every compliment received You are worthy of happiness You are worthy of love You are worthy to be free from the pain Hey self, remember to be patient with me Give adequate time to heal Be gentle with me, because your victory will be sweet Be kind with me, because their ugly words will not break me Be open to forgiving me always, because trust starts with me. Hey self, remember to always love me Unconditionally.

Grammatica Nicolette Manahan Environment, Health and Safety Manager Beaches Negril My words are highlighted, My computer tells me my sentences are fragmented. I say: “It’s poetic justice!” Let me be! Let my faux pas be! I know the mother language! I know it very well. After all the drilling and sometimes torture in school to know, How could I not? Don’t suggest full stops and commas! Just let me be! Let my sentences remain unfinished! That is the way I want them to be read, Unfinished…. For my life is unfinished. My book is nowhere near full. I have many more chapters to write. But when I do take my last breath my dear computer, Then you may place all the full stops and commas where they need to be. Then and only then does my life conclude.
